class="wp-caption-text">Advanced Ballistics Concepts

Denver, CO --(Ammoland.com)- Recognizing that more than 90 percent of shots fired by handguns and hand-held firearms miss their targets, Advanced Ballistics Concepts, LLC (ABC), a ballistics research and development company, today announced the company has invented the first multi-part bullet that immediately unlocks and expands to a predetermined diameter and pattern of spread upon leaving the tip of a rifled barrel.

This new wide envelopment bullet – enhanced with ABC’s patent-pending Triple Threat Technology (T3) – significantly improves a shooter’s hit probability in ultra-close and mid-range engagements because the bullet produces a “spider web”-like effect prior to impact.

T3 bullets are similar to multi-pellet buckshot in that both deliver multiple strike points. However, a T3 round enhances performance because the bullet expands up to 4x faster than buckshot. The bullet design also allows each segment to have a greater mass which in turn produces greater stopping power.

T3 is the first bullet to interconnect three separate segments with Kevlar strings that expand like a spider web to a predetermined diameter and spread pattern that not only dramatically improves the accuracy and hit probability, but does so without disrupting the normal flight path of a spinning bullet. T3 bullets employ a proprietary “accelerated radial spread” that compensates for most, if not all, of typical shooter error.

“According to national law enforcement statistics, more than 90% of shots fired in life and death situations miss their mark,” said Todd Kuchman, Co-Founder and President of ABC.

“Our research shows that these missed shots are the result of ‘last second twitch’ which occurs to some extent whenever a gun is fired, particularly in highly stressful situations. Because every T3 bullet offers a wide shot profile, it compensates for marksman’s error which significantly increases hit probability.”

While improved hit probability is the primary benefit of T3 rounds, safety also played a large role in the design of the technology.

“No one wants to cause collateral damage when discharging a firearm, particularly in the confusion of a threatening situation,” continued Kuchman. “That’s why the T3 bullet is the first to offer SMART-STOP™ technology, a proprietary braking system that can be configured to stop the bullet after hitting a typical household wall or live target.”

ABC is preparing to offer its T3 bullets in three distinct categories: non-lethal (aka: T3 Stinger), semi-lethal (aka: T3 Stunner) and fully-lethal (aka: T3 Stopper) variants. Each variant is optimized for use by the company’s primary target markets: military, police, hunters and personal gun owners. By offering the three variants, ABC supports the blended use of T3 bullets (Smart-Stack) which eliminates the need for additional expensive weapons – such as shotguns – and Tasers that military and police typically have to carry to address varied threats. In addition, all T3 bullets are “backward compatible” to eliminate the need to purchase new firearms.

The company is currently focused on securing partnerships with manufacturers/distributors capable of bringing this innovative ballistic technology to the multi-billion worldwide ammunition/personal defense markets. Organizations interested in working with ABC can contact the company at (970) 396-4136 or visit the company’s website at www.abct3.com

Headquartered in Denver, Colorado, Advanced Ballistic Concepts, LLC (ABC) is a ballistics research & development company founded by a highly motivated group of outdoorsmen/hunters, gun enthusiasts and scientists who set out to design a new type of bullet that can compensate for errors that typically occur in high-stress situations which historically result in more than a 90% miss rate. ABC’s patent-pending bullets with Triple Threat™ technology for handguns and hand-held firearms, combine the proven hit capability of multi-pellet buckshot with the accuracy of a spinning bullet to dramatically increase hit probability. DURANGO, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- ASYM PRECISION National Match Target ammunition is a match winning, extremely accurate load that tells the shooter just how well their tuned 45 can perform.
Featuring the Nosler 185 grain JHP – a bullet prized among serious bullseye shooters for its gilt-edged accuracy – the National Match Target is a mild shooting target round. Utilizing ASYM match brass, which is custom drawn brass made to ASYM’s specifications, and propelled by premium VihtaVouri powder, the round is loaded to 775 fps, a velocity proven to be a sweet spot in accuracy and function.
“As a custom 1911 maker whose customers expect uncommon accuracy, I looked to the Camp Perry National Matches for the inspiration behind our National Match Target ammunition. We built this round from the ground up using only premium components, assembled on state-of-the-art equipment customized to my own standards and hand-inspected and individually chamber checked as part of a quality control process that insures outstanding performance,” explained Stan Chen, president of Stan Chen Customs and ASYM Ammunition.
The National Match Target is available in a box of 50 or a case of 500 and will run in most 1911s using a stock 16 lbs. spring. For more brisk ejection, springs from 10 to 14 lbs. can be used.
The load is a premium target load and although it uses a JHP projectile, the bullet is not designed to expand at the given velocity. Those looking for a premium defensive load should consider the ASYM SOLID DEFENSE XTM (SDX) load featuring the Barnes solid copper TAC-XP bullet.
“Besides being the definitive accuracy load for competition, the National Match Target is an extremely pleasant load to shoot, especially in extended training sessions,” observed Chen. “So much so that we warn our customers to beware, because this round will make them fall in love with their 45 all over again.”

class="wp-caption-text">Horus Vision

San Bruno, CA --(Ammoland.com)- This month’s is dedicated to the late William C. Davis, the Master of Ballistics, whose expertise is the reason Horus’ ATrag program is in existence. We owe him a great deal of thanks for all he contributed to the world of long-range shooting.

On March 4, 2010, the renowned ballistician, engineer, and accomplished shooter, William C. Davis died at the age of 88.

Davis graduated from St. Bonaventure University in New York in 1941 with a degree in physics and mathematics. He joined the Army 1n 1942 where he fought in WWII and left his military service after the war in 1946 as a Captain.

Davis went back to St. Bonaventure to teach until 1951, in which he worked as an ordnance engineer for the U.S. government for 23 years. Some notable accomplishments during this time included heavily influencing the improvement of the M-16 rifle and standardization of small arms and ammunition between NATO countries.

In 1972, after many commendations and accomplishments, he retired from his work with the government and became self-employed, consulting and writing, among other tasks in the subjects of firearms, ammunition, and ballistics. He eventually founded Tioga Engineering in 1980, operated by him and his business partner, Charlie Fagg.

Amidst his work within Tioga Engineering, he wrote for American Rifle Magazine, where he became the Contributing Editor in 1974, and went on to write over 50 articles from there. In 1986, he earned the title of Ballistics Editor.

Other Noteworthy endeavors from Davis were the development of Handloading by William C. Davis the Very Low Drag (VLD) bullet, which lead to a win for the U.S. International Shooting Team in the 300-meter competition and writing a majority of the NRA book, Handloading in 1981. He also contributed the “Ammunition” section of the 15th Edition of Encyclopedia Britannica.

Davis is also well-known for writing the first ballistic program for PCs, written in BASIC, which he offered for free to NRA members. He went on to write a total of 14 ballistic software programs. Horus Vision’s ATrag program actually derived from Davis’ algorithms and ballistic studies. You can read A Brief Course in Ballistics for insight on his findings.

On top of his technical expertise, he was also an avid shooter as a military expert in rifle, pistol, and carbine, a Lifetime Master in the NRA Smallbore Rifle and rated as a Class AA in NRA Hunter Pistol Silhouette.

This account of William C. Davis is an understatement of his impact, not only through his insight and accomplishments, but also through his character, as he was described to be respected because of his dedicated, patient, and considerate nature.

To read more about William C. class="wp-caption-text">Redding Reloading Equipment

Cortland, NY --(AmmoLand.com)- Redding Reloading Equipment has responded to the requirements of Indiana Deer Hunters with the addition of the 358/25 WSSM to their line of regular production “Custom Series” reloading dies.
The new die sets are available as full length sizing , neck size and a three die deluxe set including both full length and neck sizing dies plus a seating die with crimp.

This wildcat cartridge has gained great favor as an alternative to standard handgun calibers under Indiana’s Regulation, allowing the use of cartridges with a bullet diameter of .357 or larger and a maximum case length of 1.625” to be used in rifles during their firearms deer season. It has the ability to be used in both bolt action and modern sporting rifle styles and produces sound terminal ballistics on whitetail deer.

Innovation on the part of the firearms owner has produced many great new cartridges which have over time become standards of our trade. Redding remains committed to supporting such innovation with a true “Custom” die operation, allowing individuals to work at improving their capabilities through wildcatting.

The Engineering Group at Redding requires only a chamber reamer drawing or 5 fired cases from the firearm in question to quote the production of dies for virtually any caliber and firearm which can be made with a 7/8 x 14 TPI die body. Prices are quoted on an individual basis depending upon the complexity of the chambering and any need for tooling.

Those seeking dies for a truly unique or obsolete cartridge should contact the Redding Custom Die Center in the company’s Engineering Department.

Redding offers numerous unique solutions to improve the accuracy, consistency and reliability of your handloaded ammunition. class="wp-caption-text">Winchester Ammunition

East Alton, IL – -(AmmoLand.com)- Considered one of the most innovative products in Winchester Ammunition history, the Supreme Elite Dual Bond bullet line is expanding in 2010, adding .44 Rem-Mag and .45-70 Gov’t to the big-bore hunting lineup.

The .44 Rem-Mag features a 240-grain bullet and the .45-70 Gov’t features a 375-grain bullet. The ‘bullet within a bullet’ design delivers dramatic stopping power and massive tissue damage and is suitable for whitetail deer to large dangerous game, such as bear.

“The Dual Bond bullet is technologically unsurpassed by any bullet commercially available today,” said Brett Flaugher, vice president of domestic and international marketing and sales for Winchester Ammunition. “Anyone who shoots this bullet will experience the best Winchester has to offer in our slug and big-bore hunting lineup.”

The outer jacket is designed for maximum upset and to open up into six segments. The inner jacket works with the bonded lead core and forms another six segments at a controlled rate resulting in a an expansion with 12 segments and is 1.5 times larger than the original bullet diameter.

The heavy outer jacket is mechanically bonded to the inner bullet. The inner bullet utilizes a proprietary bonding process, which welds the lead core to a second jacket that results in a design that provides for a combination of knockdown power, deep penetration and significant tissue damage while retaining nearly 100% of the original weight. The Supreme Elite® Dual Bond® has a large hollow point cavity, which provides positive expansion at a variety of ranges and impact velocities. Combined, this patent pending technology results in lethal energy transfer on impact.

SKU Description Bullet Wt.

*S44RMDB 44 Rem-Mag 240

*S4570DB 45-70 Gov’t. 375

S454DB 454 Casull 260

S460SWDB 460 S&W 260

S500SWDB 500 S&W 375

SSDB12 12 ga. 2-3/4 slug 375

SSDB123 12 ga. 3 in. slug 375

SSDB20 20 ga. 2-3/4 in. slug 260

SSDB203 20 ga. 3 in. slug 260

*New for 2010

For more information about Winchester Ammunition and its complete line of products, visit www.winchester.com.

Winchester Ammunition prides itself in being a leader of conservation
Extreme Shock Ammunition

CLINTWOOD, VA –-(AmmoLand.com)- Extreme Shock Ammunition, known for producing the world’s most advanced ammunition, has successfully produced the perfect round for Trophy Game Hunting.

Extreme Shock has accomplished what other bullet makers have been trying to do for years–design a hunting bullet that gives 3-4 inches of clean penetration into the animal before fragmenting to release 100% of it’s energy into the soft tissue. The Trophy Game is designed to penetrate through thick hide and dense bone then fragment when it impacts soft organic tissue and fluids.

Unlike other bullets that pass through the game, Trophy Game bullets deliver 100% of their kinetic energy inside the target, making for a safe, fast, and humane harvest with no loss of meat.

The Extreme Shock Trophy Game Hunting line of bullets exhibits superior performance in the target or through the intervening brush. Empirical testing clearly shows that the round nose bullet at moderate velocities travels through brush with minimal deflection. They also tend to follow a straight path inside an animal on their way to the vitals, which is why they are preferred for hunting extremely large game. The Trophy Game bullets are made with controlled expansion features which will work with absolute reliability.

About:
Remington Arms Company

Madison, NC –-(AmmoLand.com)- For nearly sixty years, law enforcement agencies and judicious gun owners around the world have relied on the Remington Model 870™ shotgun as their defensive firearm of choice.

For 2009, Remington announces a new ammunition product designed to enhance the effectiveness of your shotgun in a home defense scenario – Remington HD Ultimate Home Defense.

Remington HD Ultimate Home Defense shotgun ammunition features the same pellet material as the popular Wingmaster HD™ tungsten-bronze hunting ammunition and is offered in two loadings. Consumers can choose from a load of BB’s for the highest terminal energy or a duplex mixture of #2 and #4 pellets for excellent pattern density and outstanding stopping power with a reduced chance of over-penetration. Both loads are 12 gauge, 2 ¾-inch with 1 1/4 ounces of shot at 1250 feet per second. At the most commonly encountered home defense distances, Remington HD Ultimate Home Defense produces very tight patterns for one-shot confidence.

HD Ultimate Home Defense ammunition is the perfect compliment to Remington’s recently expanded line of tactical shotguns. Recent additions to the line include the Model 870 Express® Tactical with XS® Ghost Ring Sights and the Model 870 Express Tactical with Gray Powder Coat Finish. Both shotguns are 12 gauge and feature 3-inch chambered 18 ½-inch barrels which are threaded for the included Tactical Extended Rem™ Choke. Average weight for both models is 7 ½-pounds, overall length is 38 ½-inches and both guns are equipped with a black synthetic stock and fore-end.

The Model 870 Express Tactical with XS Ghost Ring Sights is optimized for rapid target acquisition and precise shot placement with a front XS blade sight and a receiver-mounted picatinny rail with an integrated XS Ghost Ring rear sight. This “Remington exclusive” sighting system is fully adjustable for windage and elevation.

The Model 870 Express Tactical with Gray Powder Coat Finish has a bead-sighted barrel and the receiver and barrel are finished with a gun metal gray powder coat for increased durability and reduced glare.

Regardless of which shotgun you employ in defense of your family, a magazine full of HD Ultimate Home Defense will have things that go bump in the night fearing you for a change.

Ballistics By The Inch

Columbia, MO – -(Ammoland.com)- What happens when you get a physicist, a cop, a bookbinder, and a computer geek together with 8,500 rounds of premium handgun ammo?

Only the biggest public database of how ballistic performance drops off over barrel length for 16 popular handgun calibers.

It started with a question that has fueled countless discussions over the years: does size matter? In this case, the question was posed by James Kasper to Jim Downey, about the optimal length for a self-defense handgun. And from that simple question, to which there are no simple answers, grew a research project. A research project that grew. And grew. And grew. Ending up with weeks of testing, a big pile of spent shell casings, and a website that has become a popular reference source for anyone interested in ballistics.

That website is Ballistics By The Inch, where you can find not only raw data, but charts and graphs, lots of documentation, and hints at the answer to the original question.

James and Jim eventually added in Steve Meyer and then Keith Kimball to their project, starting with thousands of rounds of handgun ammo and custom made 18″ barrels for a Thompson/Center Encore pistol. They established protocols for testing using two chronographs in which three shots of a given ammo for a given caliber were tested at 18″. Once all the ammo was tested at 18″, one inch of barrel was chopped off, and the tests repeated. And so on down to a stub of 2″ barrel.

Fireing the Thompson/Center Encore Pistol - Ballistics By The Inch

The T/C was chosen to provide ‘ideal’ data, across cartridges which may traditionally be used in a revolver or a semi-auto handgun. This would help eliminate such factors as loss due to a revolver’s gap or the operation of a semi-auto ejector. But to make sure that the data collected was relevant, over 40 actual real world guns were also tested using the same ammunition, and those results included on the website.

Stacks of ammo ready for testing - Ballistics By The Inch

One thing which is quickly evident from looking at the data is that the old ‘rule of thumb’ which says that handgun bullets gain about 50 feet per second for each additional inch of barrel length is woefully simplistic. For some calibers, the difference between a 2″ barrel and a 3″ barrel can be almost 400 fps, for others less than 50 fps. Some ammunition maxes out sooner than others in the same caliber. Some calibers continue to gain all the way out to 18″, others level out after only 6″, and some start to lose velocity at about 12″.

The four participants in the test have been pleasantly surprised at the response to their project. Initially launched at Thanksgiving 2008, the site quickly got a lot of attention around the world, and has been cited in discussion forums in at least seven languages. The recent revisions, which included a new round of tests (going from 13 to 16 calibers), has pushed the site to over a million hits. There has clearly been a real need for this information.

And that has been the most rewarding aspect of the whole project for the team members. Jim Kasper, who started it all with a simple question, and was willing to underwrite the bulk of the $20,000 cost of the project, figured that the data has probably been created before by gun and ammo manufacturers, but that the data had always been treated as proprietary. Now it is available free of charge for the average firearms enthusiast to comb through, consider, debate.

More Video:
Sinclair Ammunition Reloading Supplies

Fort Wayne, IN - -(AmmoLand.com)- Sinclair International has just introduced their Premium Neck Turning Tool Kit (#NT4000) with everything the reloader needs to get started turning the outside of their case necks for uniformity. Making every round identical is a key step in achieving the greatest accuracy from your handloads. Neck turning is an important step in the process.

The kit includes the Premium Neck Turning Tool with cutter and handle, one Expander Body, an Expander Mandrel, and a Turning Mandrel.

Company President, Bill Gravatt said, “We wanted to make precision neck turning easy for anyone to do, without an elaborate, expensive set up, and our new Sinclair Kits accomplish those goals very well.”

With every case having uniform neck wall thickness, all of your cases will release bullets equally. The result will be more uniform case expansion, uniform chamber pressure, and better accuracy down range! This is just another example of a technique borrowed from the competitive benchrest community to help all shooters improve the consistency of their handloads.

About:
Alliant’s origins as a gunpowder manufacturer can be traced back more than 125 years to the DuPont Company, whose leadership position in the explosives industry is legendary. DuPont’s divestiture in 1912 created the Hercules Power Company as an independent entity, and eventually resulted in Alliant becoming America’s premier gunpowder manufacturer.

The long, proud history of Alliant Powder began in 1872 as Laflin & Rand, later to become Hercules Powder Company — the most respected name in the reloading industry.
Tags: Brownells Gun Parts Catalog

Rifle Caliber / Bullet Twist – -(AmmoLand.com)- The information below will help you select the best barrel twist for your specific needs, providing of course there are multiple choices. If you’ll be shooting one bullet weight, choose a twist from the chart just fast enough to stabilize it. Too fast a twist simply overspins the bullet and may result in reduced accuracy. So if you’re going to be using several bullet weights, be sure to select a twist that will stabilize the heaviest one, since lighter bullets will also be stabilized.

By way of explanation, the numbers in the Twists column indicate how far the bullet must travel through the bore to make one full revolution. This is determined by the rate of rotation of the rifling. For example, a 9″ twist barrel spins the bullet one full turn when it travels 9 inches through the bore. In a 16″ twist barrel, the bullet makes on revolution in 16 inches. So at the same bullet velocity, the 9″ twist is faster (spins the bullet faster) than the 16″ twist. Consequently, as the chart reflects in the .224 CF section, the 9″ twist is necessary for stabilizing heavier bullet weights.

Again looking at the .224 CF section, if you’re planning to shoot 55-grain bullets, the 14″ twist is ideal. This twist is also the best choice for 52-and 53-grain match bullets driven at moderate velocities. But if you’re also contemplating shooting a 60-grainer, go with the 12″ twist, since it will stabilize all the bullets you’ll be using. As you can see from the 15″ and 16″ twists, higher velocities also spin the bullet faster and my enable a slower-than-recommended twist to stabilize a marginally overweight bullet.

More <a
