class="wp-caption-text">DeLORME GPS

YARMOUTH, Maine --(Ammoland.com)- DeLorme, the innovation leader in navigation technology, today announced the Fall 2011 release of the DeLorme inReach, the first Iridium-based personal communicator to deliver truly global two-way satellite text messaging; delivery confirmations; SOS capabilities; remote tracking, and an Android smartphone interface.

The inReach promises to revolutionize the way people stay affordably connected over the 90% of the Earth’s surface not covered by cellular and land-based phone service. Its capabilities address the needs of anyone from outdoors enthusiasts to professional users in remote outposts.

The core communications component of the inReach is the Iridium 9602 short-burst data (SBD) transceiver, which provides a unique, two-way communications connection through the world’s farthest-reaching satellite network. Iridium’s pole-to-pole global connectivity means inReach users can send and receive messages anywhere on the planet.

The GPS-enabled inReach can be used by itself or paired with either an Android smartphone or a DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w.

DeLorme inReach

When using the inReach as a standalone device, users can send pre-loaded text messages to designated recipients, and activate remote tracking, allowing others to follow their travels online via a continually-updated “bread crumb” trail. Unlike other standalone satellite messengers, the inReach provides delivery confirmation via flashing LED lights. In case of emergency, an SOS key can be triggered. The SOS key is protected by a “safety” to prevent false alarms.

When paired with an Android or the DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w, users enjoy full-featured, two-way text messaging (up to 160 characters per message) to and from email addresses and cell phones. Messages can also be posted to Facebook and Twitter.

In case of emergency, Android or PN-60w users can describe their predicament so responders can better prepare, and an ongoing dialog can be maintained for mutual status updates.

Any SOS message, whether relayed from a standalone or a paired inReach, will automatically activate remote tracking. That allows rescuers to efficiently zero in on the senders, whether they’re stationary or on the move. All of the inReach SOS features are aimed at producing better outcomes and eliminating the critical search and rescue problem of false alarms unnecessarily deploying lifesaving assets.

“With Iridium’s global, two-way service, we know we have the right provider for the unquestionable reach and reliability that our customers demand,” said Jim Skillings, DeLorme Vice President for Commercial Products. “DeLorme users range from active families and outdoor enthusiasts to professionals posted in remote locations around the world. What they all have in common is the need for worry-free navigation, communication hardware and services. With the inReach, we meet that need in a way never before possible.”

“The DeLorme inReach is a great example of how our ecosystem of partners is extending the reach of Iridium now through Android smartphone technology, delivering the consumer market viable, two-way personal communications with unmatched global connectivity,” said Patrick Shay, Iridium Vice President for Data Services.

Android users can drive the inReach GPS signal to their phone, improving positional accuracy to within 10 feet and eliminating the significant battery drain that results when a phone’s native GPS is engaged. A free application with DeLorme Topo North America maps will also be available for the Android. Maps can be downloaded to the Android so users won’t need to rely on unpredictable cell phone coverage to access the navigation detail. DeLorme Topo North America comes included with the Earthmate PN-60w.

The inReach is compact, lightweight, waterproof, floatable, and impact-resistant, and it can maintain satellite signal lock even in difficult GPS environments. It will be available in October. There are separate models for Android and DeLorme users. Suggested retail price is $249.95. Annual subscription plans begin at $9.95 per month.

About DeLorme<br

The cabins do not provide electricity or water; however, a wood stove provides heat for each cabin.

If a rustic cabin stay already sounds like a plan, cabin reservations can be made on-line at www.midnrreservations.com, or by calling the central reservation system at 800-447-2757.

Bald Mountain Recreation Area in Oakland County is located at 1330 E. Greenshield Rd. in Lake Orion, one and one-half miles east of M-24. Entrance to the cabins is off Harmon Road, north of Stony Creek Road.

For more information about this event, the park, accessibility, or persons needing accommodations to attend this event, contact the park supervisor at 248-693-6767 (TTY/TDD711 Michigan Relay Center for the hearing impaired), or visit www.michigan.gov/baldmountain.

A Recreation Passport is required for vehicles entering the park. The Recreation Passport has replaced motor vehicle permits for entry into Michigan state parks, recreation areas and state-administered boating access fee sites. This new way to fund Michigan’s outdoor recreation opportunities also helps to preserve state forest campgrounds, trails, and historic and cultural sites in state parks, and provides park development grants to local communities. Michigan residents can purchase the Recreation Passport ($10 for motor vehicles; $5 for motorcycles) by checking “Yes” on their license plate renewal forms, or at any state park or recreation area. To learn more about the Recreation Passport, visit www.michigan.gov/recreationpassport, or call 517-241-7275.

Non-resident motor vehicles must still display a valid Non-Resident Recreation Passport ($29 annual; $8 daily) to enter a Michigan state park, recreation area or state-administered boating access fee site, which can be purchased at any state park or recreation area, or through the Michigan e-Store at www.michigan.gov/estore.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state’s natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. class="wp-caption-text">Jeff Alt

USA - -(Ammoland.com)- How do you teach your children to enjoy hiking? Start early and make it fun!

So says outdoor enthusiast extraordinaire and author Jeff Alt.

“Getting kids outside is more important than ever,” he says. “TV, computer and video game addictions are replacing outdoor play time. Passive inside entertainment is contributing significantly to the national obesity epidemic! It’s time to get off the couch America! Get the kids outside!”

Jeff is an avid hiker. In addition to walking the 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail, he also walked the 218-mile John Muir Trail with his wife, and trekked across a 50-mile path of Ireland with his wife, young daughter, and extended family.

He and his wife emerged from the church doors on their wedding day wearing backpacks, and his son was taken on his first hike at 8 weeks.

Jeff has lots of great advice about how to make sure you and the kids have a great time outdoors.

Start Early-Develop A Routine:

Give your kids a healthy dose of “Early Outdoor Intervention.” It will pay off later.

Start hiking with your newborn:

Infants and children weighing less than 15 pounds should be carried in a front body carrier or a sling.

Children weighing 16 to 40 pounds can fit into a child carrier backpack.

Children weighing more than 30 pounds might be ready to hike short distances and carry a little daypack.

Let the child lead. This helps you focus on what they’re interested in and keeps you from leaving them in your dust.

Get outside every day. Take a walk with the family once a day. Walk around the block, go to the park, go to the beach, and river. Get maps and books and search out and find new places to go. See new places all the time.

Save money and stop driving everywhere. Walk to the grocery store. Walk to your local restaurant for dinner and back. Walk to the library. Make walking and hiking as routine as brushing your teeth.

Bring the outdoors inside. Educate constantly to generate interest and enthusiasm. Take lots of pictures of the kids and places you go. Make posters for the family and living room and for Christmas cards. Get magazines, videos, and artwork that show places you want to go. Rent movies about faraway places. Use the Internet together to look at maps, and photographs of the wildlife, environments, and spectacular scenery you will be visiting someday.

Go high tech. Bring on the gadgetry! Turn your computer game nerds on to the adventure technology. (e.g. GPS, pedometers headlamp flashlights, geocaching) and teach them all about how these incredible devices are being used for fun, like scavenger hiking in the Shenandoah & Great Smoky Mtn Ntl. Parks.

Take the kids to local orienteering course and learn how to use GPS & compass together.

Involve the kids in planning out all trips and adventures. Older children can use the computer to research your destination or sport. (all national parks and most other destinations have websites chock full of facts & info., maps, wildlife).

Let the kids (especially teens) bring along a friend. Get permission from parents and make it a club adventure.

Prepare your family for your adventure:

Preparation is the key to a successful hike. Many of the same equipment decisions that you make for your own adventures can be applied to outfitting your children.

Research the destination & activity (Have your youngster help you with this-google, park websites, library, bookstore travel section, outfitters, etc.)

You’ve got mail! Send for maps and guidebooks of the area, and check with the local travel experts on hiking, rangers, guides, etc. Have the packages sent to your child or children.
Attend local slide shows or lectures (outfitters/libraries/bookstores) every chance you get.

Plan ahead – especially when you have younger children. Choose a trail that offers easy access to domesticated amenities. Having a base camp or prearranged lodging allows you to be a parent, not a Sherpa.

Check into transportation options. You should have a plan for what to do if you need to get off the trail.

Identify the restaurant and grocery amenities. Not only is it good to know what’s available before you arrive so that you’ll know what to pack, but if the weather turns bad, you can have an instantly viable backup plan.

Prepare and plan what you need based on what you find. What kinds of wildlife can you expect? Will water be available? What are the weather and terrain like? You want to avoid hiking in freezing temperatures, lightning storms, and extreme heat. You want to identify and find swimming holes, wildlife, enjoyable views, and great places to boulder, look at flowers, spectacular trees, and wildlife.

Acquire the Right Gear. Get everyone properly fitted into essential gear particularly boots and packs.

Clothing- NO COTTON! Dress in layers (synthetics, fleece, wool, and waterproof breathable items. Bring what you need for the weather and conditions you will encounter

Rain jacket

Hat

Shirt

Socks

Shorts/pants

underwear

Deet Free bug repellant (Nutrapell, Coleman, etc.)

Children’s sunscreen

Train at home in your neighborhood with your kids before you go into the wild. Practice carrying your child in the child carrier. This will help you adjust to carrying the pack, and your child will acclimate to the routine. Take older children (age 4 and older) on weekly walks so that they are physically conditioned for the journey. Wear your boots and all your gear on your training hikes to condition you and make sure everything fits and works before you leave town.

Think Food – Think Fun:

Pack your kids favorite snacks. Desirable food will help encourage your kids to eat and stay energized. Pack more food than you think you will need.

Try out your food and your stove at home before your trip. Make sure you can cook food the kids will enjoy. When preparing your food, think compact, lightweight, and filling. Bring items that are easy to prepare or ready to eat.

Select foods that just need a little bit of water to prepare. Plan for two pounds of food per person per day. Eliminate bulky packaging; condense food into plastic bags. Pack an extra day’s worth of food.

Freeze-dried meals

Pasta/rice/beans

Foil-wrapped meats such as tuna or chicken

Dehydrated fruit and veggies

Sliced apples, grapes, bananas, carrots

Energy bars or granola bars

Peanut butter

Cheese and sausage

Bagels, crackers, candy bars, nuts,

Tortilla & cheese sandwiches

Energy bars for kids (e.g. Cliff’s zbar for kids)

Oatmeal of dried cereals

Depending where you go, remember to bring a food bag and rope to hang 10 feet up in a tree so the bears can’t get to it.

Learn First Aid and be prepared for trail emergencies:

Carry a first-aid kit, and brush up on child first aid and CPR. Learn about the dangers of hypothermia, and monitor children for signs. Pack all of your child’s medication.

Know the location of the nearest medical facility for you and the children.

Learn how to use a compass and map or GPS. Learn how to make a quick shelter to help keep you warm and dry. Keep matches and lighters dry and in a safe place. Know how to start a fire to keep warm. If you do get lost, make yourself as visible as possible. Place a bright item (e.g. item of clothing or gear) in the open. Make distress signals and make noise. If you brought a cell phone, check periodically to see if it works. Leave a copy of your itinerary with a friend or family member.

A Walk for Sunshine By Jeff Alt

Keep the journey fun:

The driving priority with children is to make sure they have fun. Let them lead the way and tell you what they want to do. Whatever animal or rock your young child takes interest in, stop and explore with him or her. Talk to your child about what you’re seeing. Label the animals, rocks, trees, and flowers. Tone down your mileage goals to the comfort level of your child.

Engage older children with trip planning, animals, local history, or anything that applies to what they are learning in school.

Teach your children good backcountry ethics. Kids can learn to pack out trash, take nothing from the woods but memories and pictures, and proper backcountry toileting at a young age.

About Jeff Alt
Ammoland.com)- Solaire’s high-technology portable infrared Solaire Anywhere barbecue grill cuts grilling times in half and delivers better-tasting food.

Why infrared is better: “Ready to cook in under three minutes in any weather. It cooks fast! Incredible searing power locks in flavorful juices with little chance of flare ups. Once the food is seared you can cook it to any level of doneness you desire because the juices are sealed in-power-cooking at its best!”–Ray Vavla, National Sales Manager

The Grill: Compact at 21″W x 12″H x 13″L and 20-pounds, putting out an incredible 14,000 BTUs at a range of 225 to 1,200 degrees. It comes with a carry-bag that fits three one-pound disposable propane canisters (fuel for 60 minutes each). With optional adapter hose it can be hooked up to 20-pound tanks.

Setup time: About one minute.

Speed:Warm up in less than 3 minutes. It will grill eight-quarter pound burgers (with room for a couple of hot dog wieners in about 6-7 minutes; one-inch thick steaks about 3 minutes longer.

Flavor matters! The powerful infrared burner delivers high-dollar steak-house crisp exterior while the food is finished to any degree of desired doneness. Unique V-shaped stainless steel grates catch drippings and convert them to flavor-packed smoke next to the food while virtually eliminating flare ups.

What is infrared? This portable grill uniquely applies infrared energy directly to the food without conventional gas grill fillers such as lava rock, steel vaporizing sheets, ceramic tiles, etc.

Quality counts: Produced by a 100-year-old family-owned firm, this American handmade grill is constructed of heavy-duty 304 stainless steel (316 marine grade stainless option available for salt water boating use).

Price: $379.00 MSRP

For a dealer please go to www.solairegrills.com or call Ray Vavla 800-782-1365.
Tags: J. Wayne Fears

Pottstown PA --(Ammoland.com)- One third of the people in the U.S. need a third leg, well over 73.3-million people, according to a survey done by the National Sporting Goods Association. How do you know if you need a third leg?

If you hike, camp, birdwatch, climb hills or mountains or pick blackberries, you need a third leg, like the Pro Tool Walking Stick.

Most people think that a walking stick is primarily used to help push yourself up steep inclines. But where the third leg is most important is when you’re traveling down hill or walking around a hill.

The walking stick acts like the third leg of a tripod, making you much-more stable than when you only have two points of contact (your two feet) with the ground.

Pro Tool Walking Stick.

When you’re climbing uphill, the walking stick gives you a way to push as well as pull, like having a third leg that helps you take some of the strain off your legs. You also can use a walking stick to move snakes and other undesirable critters out of your path, and it’s very efficient in pulling blackberry vines down to where you can reach the berries and pick them.

In many sections of the country now, the leaves are changing colors, the weather’s cooling-down, and many families are camping. Some of the favored campgrounds across the nation are in mountainous terrain, because camping high enables everyone to see all the beautiful leaves down below. The cooler weather makes hiking, viewing nature and photographing wildlife activities enjoyable for many families. You’ll participate in these sports activities much more, if you’ve got a walking stick.

Because America is becoming fatter, and cardio-vascular disease is one of the main concerns of national health organizations, most cardiologists agree that exercise, particularly walking, is one of the best defenses against heart trouble and to help prevent heart attacks. However, before you start participating in a vigorous exercise program, you need to have a medical check-up and make sure you’re in shape to begin an exercise program. One of the easiest exercises of all to do and to participate in is walking. If you’re on uneven terrain, if you want to make your walking more comfortable, or if you’re getting older and aren’t quite as nimble as you once have been, a Pro Tool Walking Stick can give you that stability you need to continue to walk. Do you have members of your family who have been talking about exercising, getting outside and walking, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet? One of the best sources of encouragement that you can give to let that person know how much you care about him or her and his future is to give a Pro Tool Walking Stick for Christmas.

To learn more about the many uses of a walking stick and how you can purchase the 47-inch Pro Tool Walking Stick that’s made in the USA from hardwood ash with a unique, ergonomic surface design feature along the entire length of the stick with just the right taper from top to bottom, go to www.protoolindustries.net/categories/tools-by-brand.

This walking stick also has a genuine, solid-brass boot to protect the foot of the stick, provide traction and prevent slippage and wear. For a Christmas gift that will convey your love and concern for a friend or family member, who may need to lose some weight, get in better shape, get out of the house and out from in front of the television, then present your loved one with a Pro Tool Walking Stick.

To Learn more about go to DeLORME GPS

YARMOUTH, ME --(Ammoland.com)- DeLorme, the innovation leader in mapping and GPS technologies, will demonstrate pre-release models of its eagerly-awaited Earthmate PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator at the 2010 Teva Mountain Games, scheduled for June 3-6 in Vail, CO. Actual product release is expected in July of this year.

The Earthmate PN-60w is the world’s first handheld GPS that enables Type & Send text messaging via satellite. A special interface on the PN-60w connects it wirelessly with the SPOT Satellite Communicator, which was designed exclusively for DeLorme. Messages are created on the PN-60w’s internal keyboard, then relayed via satellite for delivery using established SPOT technology.

Because messages are conveyed via satellite, and are not dependent on cellular phone coverage, the PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator keeps users reliably connected even in remote locations around the world. Both devices are designed to be ruggedized and waterproof and thus better suited than most cell phones for the rigors of outdoor use.

The Teva Mountain Games will be the first opportunity for the public to see the two devices together in action. The DeLorme and SPOT exhibits will be side-by-side in the Gear Town area, located in downtown Vail.

“We’re excited to introduce the Earthmate PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator to serious outdoors enthusiasts at the Teva Mountain Games,” said DeLorme Product Manager Chip Noble.

“The ability to navigate confidently in remote locations and stay connected with customized satellite messaging means peace of mind wherever you go.”

Users can type and send text messages to individual email addresses, cell phones, buddy lists, and social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, Fire Eagle, SpotAdventures.com, or Geocaching.com. In case of emergency, SOS messages can be sent with the user’s GPS coordinates embedded. In addition, family and friends can track a user’s progress via Google’s free online maps.

The Earthmate PN-60w comes with DeLorme Topo North America GPS maps and desktop software included, with topographic and street coverage of the U.S. and Canada. It also displays high-resolution aerial imagery, official USGS and Natural Resources Canada topo maps, and NOAA nautical charts, all available from DeLorme via low-cost subscription. Navionics lake maps and marine charts (sold separately) can also be displayed.

The text messaging, track progress, and emergency SOS/911 features are all activated via subscriptions from SPOT.

About DeLorme
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- On many National Wildlife Refuges, spring means the return of visitors to water trails — and it’s no mystery why. Exploring a refuge by canoe or kayak combines adventure with physical activity and an intimacy with nature that’s hard to beat.

Whether you navigate on your own or take a guided trip, bring your own boat or rent one, many refuges make wonderful paddling destinations. Besides providing a close-up glimpse of shorebirds, mammals and other wildlife, refuges offer serenity, mapped water trails, and, sometimes, the option of multi-day camping excursions. The Refuge System boasts some 1,000 miles of marked water trails.

“When you’re in a canoe, you’re not as intimidating to wildlife,” said Nancy Brown, a public outreach specialist at the South Texas Refuge Complex, at the state’s southernmost tip, where guided canoe and kayak outings on the Rio Grande and the Laguna Madre are sellouts. A former Alaska kayak guide, Brown helped secure National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grants for the half-day interpreted paddle trips at the complex’s three National Wildlife Refuges: Santa Ana, Lower Rio Grande Valley and, as of last summer, Laguna Atascosa. “We’ve paddled right beneath hawks and past white-tailed deer. When you’re in a canoe, animals don’t appear to see you as a predator.”

A boat is a must for those who wish to explore the Upper Klamath National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon where a marked canoe trail is open all year-round, as well as at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, which crosses southern Georgia and northern Florida.

“The vast majority of the refuge you can see only by water,” said Blaine Eckberg, park ranger at Okefenokee Refuge. “Paddling lets you enter one of the largest wilderness areas east of Mississippi River, full of egrets, cranes and of course alligators. Mild temperatures and the lack of biting insects make spring the most popular paddling season.”

Two islands and seven raised platforms are available to paddlers who want to camp overnight in the swamp, as Eckberg recently did.

“You may hear alligators growling, but they’re not likely to bother you. They’re not interested in people.”

Over 42 million people visit refuges each year, generating almost $1.7 billion in sales for regional economies. In addition to wildlife observation, refuges provide rich opportunities for wildlife photography, hunting, fishing, environmental education and nature interpretation. For more information about all 551 National Wildlife Refuges, visit http://www.fws.gov/refuges/.

Here are just a few of the National Wildlife Refuges that are popular for outdoor water activities:

Northeast John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, Pennsylvania The refuge’s 4.5 mile segment of Darby Creek winds through the largest freshwater tidal marsh in Pennsylvania before flowing into the Delaware River. See migratory birds including warblers, herons, egrets and sandpipers, as well as bald eagles, kingfishers and waterfowl. Enjoy great fishing along the way. Refuge waters are tidal and navigable only within two hours before and after high tide. Bring your own canoe or kayak. Download monthly tide charts on the refuge Web site and learn points of interest along a self-guided paddle tour. http://heinz.fws.gov

Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, Vermont Paddle past one of the most impressive great blue heron rookeries in the Northeast. Look also for bald eagles, ospreys, waterfowl and neotropical migratory birds of the silver maple floodplain forest. Take a map and have enough daylight or moonlight to find your way in the delta’s many channels. Canoe rentals are available nearby. http://www.fws.gov/northeast/missisquoi/

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Massachusetts Part of the Great Marsh, the largest continuous salt marsh north of Long Island Sound, the Parker River Refuge attracts hundreds of songbirds, shorebirds and waterfowl. Spring and fall are favorite paddling seasons because migratory birds are plentiful and mosquitoes and horseflies are not. Check tide times to avoid being stranded by low tide. Rentals are available in Newburyport. A paddling guide and map are available online. http://www.fws.gov/northeast/parkerriver/

Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, New Hampshire and Maine Paddlers can ogle moose, bald eagles, loons and other wildlife from along more than 10 miles of the Magalloway and Androscoggin Rivers, their backwaters and much of Umbagog Lake. Visit the refuge Web site for water route options. Canoe rentals are available nearby. http://www.fws.gov/northeast/lakeumbagog/

West Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Nevada From June 15 to December 31, paddlers can explore a large freshwater emergent marsh and waterfowl nesting haven along a six-mile marked trail in Nevada’s high desert. class="wp-caption-text">The Outdoor Foundation

Boulder, CO, —-(AmmoLand.com)- In 2008, American participation in outdoor recreation was marked by encouraging growth in important segments of core outdoor activities as well as continuing, though less dramatic, declines in youth participation, according to a new report, the 2009 Outdoor Recreation Participation Report, released today by The Outdoor Foundation®. These trends show the beginning of adjustments in American lifestyles brought about by a challenging economy, shifting demographics and changing times.

“In today’s economy, people are returning to simpler lifestyles — the ‘less is more’ ethic,” said Christine Fanning, executive director of The Outdoor Foundation. “Historically economic downturns have resulted in increased participation in outdoor recreation. Nature-based activities provide fun, affordable recreation and vacation opportunities for individuals and families. In the resurgence of several core outdoor activities in 2008, we hopefully see Americans beginning to reconnect with nature. With the impacts of the obesity and inactivity crisis felt nationwide — particularly among our kids — a return to a healthier outdoor lifestyle is an encouraging development and important trend.”

The Outdoor Foundation’s 2009 Outdoor Recreation Participation Report is the only detailed study of its kind tracking American participation trends in outdoor recreation. The study is based on an on-line survey capturing responses from over 40,000 Americans ages six and older and covers 114 different activities, making it the largest survey of its type examining participation in sports and outdoor activities.

The report provides important insights into participation in outdoor recreation that are critical to efforts nationwide seeking to understand and reverse the growing inactivity crisis and the growing disconnect with the outdoors among youth and all Americans. Detailed information is included on youth, diversity, and gender — demographics essential to future generations of outdoor enthusiasts and conservationists.
Key Findings of the 2009 Outdoor Recreation Participation Report:

Participation in Outdoor Recreation

•	Popular Pastimes: In 2008, 48.6 percent of Americans ages 6 and older participated in outdoor recreation. Americans made an estimated 11.16 billion outdoor excursions in 2008 — either close to home, in a nearby park or on an overnight trip.

•	A Return to Nature: Americans returned to nature in 2008. Activities like backpacking, mountain biking and trail running showed double-digit increases in participation, and hiking and camping showed nine percent and seven percent increases, respectively.

•	Young Women Head Indoors: Among women, indoor activities are most popular among ages 21 to 25 and older. Among men, outdoor activities are more popular than indoor fitness activities and team sports among all age groups up to ages 66 and older.

Youth

•	More Indoor Youth: Participation in outdoor recreation among youth ages 6 to 17 dropped by six percent — resulting in a combined 16.7 percent drop over the last three years. Participation fell most precipitously among the youngest age group measured, ages 6 to 12, which decreased nine percent.

•	Busy Lifestyles: Taxed by the requirements of their often highly structured, over-scheduled lives, today’s kids are struggling to find the time to get active outdoors and are foregoing outdoor pursuits in favor of other competing priorities. Among outdoor participants ages 6 to 17, a lack of time is the primary reason they don’t get outdoors more often.

•	A Lack of Interest and Experience: For kids ages 6 to 17 who don’t participate in outdoor activities, the chief barrier is a lack of interest — an ambivalence to the outdoors that is likely the result of a lack of outdoor experience and a surplus of competing priorities.

•	The Influence of Family: Most youth are introduced to outdoor activities by parents, friends, family and relatives.

Diversity

Outdoor Participation varies by Ethnicity: Participation in outdoor activities is higher among Caucasians than any other ethnicity and lowest among African Americans in nearly all age groups.

Diverse Youth, More Focused on School: Diverse youth participants cite school work as the top reason they don’t get out more often — a barrier they cite more prominently than Caucasian youth.

Hispanics, Looking for Nearby Outdoor Recreation: Hispanic participants and non-participants alike cite a lack of access to nearby places to participate in outdoor activities as a barrier to participation more often than other ethnicities.

To download a copy of the 2009 Outdoor Recreation Participation Report and other recent research reports from The Outdoor Foundation, visit www.outdoorfoundation.org/research.

About The Outdoor Foundation
GoHuntGeorgia.com

COVINGTON, Ga — -(AmmoLand.com)- The Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center (located between Covington and Jackson on Ga. Hwy. 36) will host its 7th annual FFA Wildlife Camp this summer. The goal of the wildlife camp is to teach young boys and girls about outdoor sports and safety and to increase their awareness and appreciation of wildlife. This year there will be four “Wildlife Camps” to provide wildlife education and outdoor safety training in a dynamic environment for young boys and girls. There are two wildlife camps for youth ages 10-15, to be held June 21-26 and June 28-July 3, 2009. In addition, there is an Advanced Wildlife Camp available for youth ages 11-16 from July 5-10 and July 12-17, 2009. Registration is open, but space is limited!

The weeklong residential wildlife camp will center on firearms and hunter safety (taught by certified firearms instructors). Participants will receive their Georgia Hunter Safety Certification (taught by members of the Georgia Hunter Education Association and authorized by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources) and will have opportunities to demonstrate safe firearms use with certified instructors. In addition, attendees will enjoy fishing, outdoor cooking, deer stand safety, primitive camping, and wildlife conservation education.

The Advanced Wildlife Camp is for youth who already have their hunter safety certification. Opportunities during this weeklong camp include bow hunting, survival, wildlife education, and firearms and firearm maintenance.

Campers are divided by age group and stay with the same group throughout the entire week. All programs are designed to be ‘hands-on’ and geared toward the age of the participants. Recreation facilities at the camp include a swimming pool, miniature golf, ping-pong, basketball and much more! The cost is only $300 per camper, which includes lodging, meals, instruction, recreation and a t-shirt.

Sponsorship is needed for awards and door prizes and volunteers are needed to help with the camp. If you would like to assist in sponsorship opportunities, volunteer or for more information on the Wildlife Camp, contact Leroy Bagley with the Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center at (770) 786-6926, ext. 8, lbagley@gaaged.org or visit www.wildlifecamp.com
Tags: <a

The wild porkers can carry disease and to keep them from becoming a threat to domestic and wild animals, crops and wildlife habitat, state and federal wildlife officials used a helicopter and aerial gunner to shoot the hogs in dense cover. Feral hogs cause damage to crops and the ecosystem across the country to the tune of an estimated $800 million annually. That’s why state statute requires the Commission to remove feral pigs whenever they are found in Nebraska.

Nebraska’s wild turkey numbers are booming and the birds have captured the interest and imagination of hunters and nonhunters alike. In “A Wild Turkey Year,” Regional Editor Rocky Hoffmann describes wild turkey behavior season-by-season throughout the year.

The evidence that times are constantly changing is all around us, but one never thought they’d see such dramatic changes as have occurred in kites and kite flying. One has to admit it’s been a while, but the last time anyone looked, the typical kite was a misshapen diamond design with a long tail. To see what has happened to kites while you weren’t paying attention, take a look at the article “Go Fly a Kite,” by Elizabeth Mack of Omaha. The designs are … well, you’ll just have to take a look.

The article “Saving a Living Dinosaur” by fisheries biologist Kirk Steffensen of Lincoln describes how biologists are catching endangered pallid sturgeon from the Missouri River on trotlines in an effort to help the species.

There are also short features on Arbor Day, a wildlife sanctuary called Heron Haven located, in of all places, northwest Omaha, a guide to canoeing, this month’s portraits from the past, outdoor news and information from across the state, and readers comments.

Yamaha

Cypress, Calif. – Yamaha Motor Corporation, U.S.A., today launched the lightweight, fuel-efficient EF2000iS generator. The latest model in Yamaha’s inverter generator lineup and the result of three years of research and development, the EF2000iS provides a practical, versatile machine that can go anywhere with ease.

The EF2000iS is a quiet, long-running device with a new retro-modern design and – like all Yamaha generators – the most advanced Yamaha technology and performance. Weighing in at only 44 pounds, this mighty mouse has enough power to run a microwave oven or a television – making your campsite a much more comfortable place to be.

“The EF2000iS is a perfect generator for RV owners, whether they have a built-in generator or not,” said Colin Iwasa, power equipment sales manager at Yamaha. “Onboard generators in motorized RVs are used to run air conditioners about 20% of the time during a campout; the other 80% of the time you need much less power to run the TV, satellite system, lights, other small appliances or to charge the battery. No need to power up the big onboard generator – you can run your little EF2000iS all night long on less than a gallon of gas.”

Using a smaller, portable generator saves gas, pollutes less and eliminates the uncomfortable vibration created by larger generators in the motor home. And you, as well as your neighbors, will appreciate how quiet it is.

The EF2000iS is also equipped with a parallel-use function, making it compatible with Yamaha’s TwinTech or Reliance Control’s Sidewinder Parallel Kit to double generator power. This is especially helpful when additional power is needed to accommodate a wider range of uses, such as running air conditioners and larger appliances in a towable travel trailer.

Its small size, ease of use and versatile handling make the EF2000iS a perfect appliance away from the campsite as well. It can be used at home as a standby generator to run your refrigerator, TV, lights or microwave oven, or provide power for anywhere from construction sites to flea markets to running outdoor sound systems.

Yamaha, always conscious of eco-friendly practices, designed the EF2000iS to meet the strictest California CARB Tier III emissions standards. Additionally, 90% of the parts on this generator can be recycled into other materials.

“The same engineering and technology that goes into Yamaha’s motorcycles and outboard motors is also built into our generators,” said Iwasa. “Our top quality engineering gives the generators outstanding durability – the new EF2000iS has a longer engine life rating than all competitors in its class.”

The EF2000iS will be available for purchase in early June at local Yamaha generator dealers; retail price is $1,099.00. To see Yamaha’s entire generator model lineup or to find the closest dealer, visit www.yamaha-motor.com/generators or call 1-800-88-YAMAHA.
Tags: <a
