National Firearm Museum

FAIRFAX, Va. --(Ammoland.com)- Officials from the National Rifle Association and Boy Scouts of America will be at the National Scouting Museum in Irving, Texas on August 19th to open a new exhibit titled “A Century of Marksmanship.”

“Since 1910, the Boy Scouts of America and the NRA have worked together to provide Scouts with a safe and fun environment to learn about the shooting sports,” said Phil Schreier, Senior Curator for NRA National Firearms Museum.

“The Boy Scouts is where I first learned about firearms.”

The exhibit contains photographs, firearms, merit badge books and patches covering the 100 year history of the Marksmanship Merit Badge. Firearms commissioned to commemorate Scouting have been generously donated to the exhibit by both Remington and Henry Repeating Firearms. Images were also supplied by Boy’s Life Magazine and members of the Remington Society of America.

National Scouting Museum

From BSA’s founding in 1910, the shooting sports have been an exciting part of the Scouting experience. In fact, “Marksman” was one of the first 14 Badges of Merit offered in the original Scout Handbook. An estimated 20,000 Rifle Shooting and Shotgun Shooting badges are earned every year.

NRA training counselors, certified instructors and range safety officers continue to provide a safe educational environment for Scouts to learn about the shooting sports at hundreds of BSA summer camps and range-day activities.

The exhibit is a cooperative effort between the staff’s of the National Scouting Museum and the NRA’s National Firearms Museum. It was generously funded by the NRA Foundation through the philanthropy of George S. Rich of Maryland.

The exhibit will be on display at the National Scouting Museum on1329 W Walnut Hill Lane in Irving, Texas. Grand Island, Neb. --(Ammoland.com)- CMP and Hornady have teamed up to bring a new match to the 2011 CMP Eastern and Western games, and Camp Perry.

The Vintage Sniper Rifle Match was proposed several years ago by Dave Emary of Hornady Manufacturing, as a way to include many of the vintage sniper rifles that are in circulation, yet lack an official shooting format. CMP and Hornady included it as a test match for the 2010 CMP Eastern and Western Games with great success, drawing large turnouts and positive comments.

The Vintage Sniper Rifle Match will feature a two-man team format, with each alternating as shooter and spotter, and firing 10 rounds at both 300 and 600 yards. Match rifles will be original or replica sniper rifles issued through the Korean War. Allowable optics will be original scopes or replicas, along with a few commercial scopes giving essentially the same optical performance. Download a complete list of acceptable rifles and scopes as well as rules and regulations.

Short, 20-second target exposures, followed by maximum 20-seconds in the pits, differentiates this match, making it both challenging and fun. Teams must plan and communicate to do well, with the spotter tracking wind conditions, giving clear and concise wind calls to the shooter.

All shooting takes place in the prone position. Slings may be used for support, or sandbags will be supplied as a rest if the team chooses to use them. Mechanical supports or rear rests may not be used.

A custom trophy designed as a memorial to Hornady founder, J.W. Hornady, is being commissioned by CMP and Hornady for Camp Perry. Hornady will provide Match ammunition in 6.5 X 55 mm, 303 British, 7.62 X 54R, and 8 X 57 mm, to go along with its excellent 30-06 M1 Garand Match ammunition. All will be made available to shooters for purchase through the CMP.

Now is the time to buy a CMP M1D, or Gibbs 1903A4, or put together a rifle with some of the excellent replica mounts and scopes on the market. The match will be an official competition at the 2011 CMP Eastern and Western games, and will be held immediately after the Hearst Match at the 2011 National Matches at Camp Perry.

This body of work is both a documentary exploration of competitive shooting and a self-portrait of the artist.

In the artist’s words: “Shooter combines two of my passions, competitive shooting and photography. It is my perspective of the word shooter. This work may at first be defined as a documentary analysis of competitive shooting, but it equally needs to be regarded as a self-portrait. Every image represents me as much as it does the sport and the individuals in the photographs.

I photographed my friends and colleagues, representing every level of participants in Air Rifle and Smallbore competition from high school to the U.S. National Team. Collectively we are shooters, and this is the common thread that ties us together. A bond built on countless hours spent on the range, fueled by quiet determination to achieve perfection on every shot. Perhaps not so unlike the numerous hours spent in the darkroom creating this series of images.”

Wood works for the Civilian Marksmanship Program, where coordinates camps and clinics geared for high school age athletes.

She first became involved in competitive shooting as an undergraduate at Clemson University, and has been heavily involved with the sport for ten years. Wood completed her BFA in Photography at Clemson University in 2003, and will complete her MFA in Photography at Barry University in 2011. Her work has been including in several juried exhibitions and group shows.

The rectangular rear aperture insert produced by ShootingSight LLC of Cincinatti, Ohio and the SR MicroSight produced by Stallings Machine of Senoia, Georgia are now legal for use in CMP-sanctioned Service Rifle matches beginning with the 2011 shooting season.

The following two rule changes will be incorporated into the 2011 CMP Competition Rules that are due for release in March. Anyone with questions should contact CMP Headquarters at Camp Perry.

• 6.1.1 (4) Front and rear sights: Must be of U.S. Army design (either service or match). Front sights must have square-topped posts. Any modifications to the front sight, rear sight or rear sight hood must be specifically authorized in Rule 6.1.2.
• 6.1.2 (3) The dimensions of the rear sight aperture (internal diameter) and the front sight post (width) may vary from standard military dimensions. The rear sight hood diameter may not be longer than 0.70″ or larger than 0.50″ in diameter. The rear sight aperture may have a fixed, non-adjustable round, square or rectangular aperture insert. A corrective lens or multi-focal lens system may be inserted in the rear sight hood.

Civilian Marksmanship Program

CAMP PERRY, OHIO - -(Ammoland.com)- Former Civilian Marksmanship Program armorer, Michael D. Gingher, 67, of Thorncreek Township, Indiana, died 3 December, 2010 at Glencrest Nursing and Rehab Center in Chicago where he was admitted after an extended illness.

Gingher was a CMP armorer, specializing in the service of M1 Garand and AR15 rifles shortly after the privatization of the CMP program in the mid to late 1990s.

He was considered an diligent armorer and was instrumental in assessing the quality of Danish M1 rifles and their eventual acquisition by CMP, having traveled to Denmark, according to former fellow workers.

“Mike was a good man and a hard worker,” said Mark Kovach, owner of Mid-County Firearms, Inc. in Oak Harbor, Ohio. Kovach, who worked as a CMP armorer at the time, said Gingher was always willing to put in extra time to make sure CMP customers were satisfied with rifles received through the sales program.

He was born in 1943 in Fort Wayne, Indiana and was the son of a U.S. Marine. Gingher himself served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 31 years, retiring in 1991. He also was employed by General Electric.

Gingher was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Whitley County Leatherneck Club, a was a life member of the NRA and National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. He was also a member of Midwest Gun Traders and Whitely County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.

He will be sadly missed.

Civilian Marksmanship Firearms Inspection & Repair Operations

Anniston, AL - -(Ammoland.com)- In an effort to give the Garand shooting and collecting communities an opportunity to intimately view and participate in CMP Inspection and Repair processes and to reduce our labor costs, we established a volunteer program that begin in July, 2010.

Assignments are based primarily on individual level of familiarity with the Garand and CMP needs at the time. Although we do try to ensure that volunteers spend a part of their time learning about and working on the Garand, some time may be spent in warehousing, packing, or shipping operations.

The CMP volunteer program that was in effect from 2001-2006 was a huge success and benefited the CMP and all the great people who had donated their time. Without exception, all past volunteers reported their visits as very educational, recreational and enjoyable. Most of the past volunteers had made several repeat visits from all parts of the country, and many have become ambassadors for the program. The CMP is a charity and expenses associated with volunteering may be tax deductible.

Volunteers absorb all costs for transportation, lodging and meals. We are limited to ten volunteers per day and most stay 3-5 days per trip. Tools and gauges are available, but we encourage volunteers to bring their own.

Volunteers must be pre-approved. Because of nature of the commodity with which we deal, all volunteers must be scheduled in advance. Walk-ons will not be accepted. We require you to submit your request at least two weeks prior to your visit, although we expect most dates to be booked months in advance.

Cameras are allowed, but volunteers are asked to not bring their private firearms. Working conditions are what should be expected. It gets very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter, and the work is always dirty.

When asked who inspired the Horomanski girls, Elyse, Marie and Jenna to become highpower shooters, they quickly pointed out their father, Curt.

CAMP PERRY, OHIO - -(Ammoland.com)- Curt Horomanski, 52, of Monroeville, Penn-sylvania, says hees happy to provide shooters for the Steel Eagles junior rifle team. His oldest daughter Chessa, 22, recently graduated from the junior ranks but he still has three daughters shooting with the Steel Eagles and members of the Pennsylvania Rifle and Pistol Association.

Elyse, 19, Jenna, 16, and Marie, 14 , all point their fingers at dad when asked whoes the driving force behind their participation in service rifle competition. The girls didn’t take the traditional route of shooting air rifle or .22 caliber smallbore rifle prior to jumping into highpower. All of the Horomanski girls fired nothing but AR-15 rifles from the start, their dad says.

They all started at 12,. Curt said. ”We started in club shooting and they went to the firing line standing and didn’t hit the target very much, sometimes they were on paper, but not in the scoring area. Of course the tears would roll down, but they got better and better”. he said.

Over the years the Horomanski family has traveled to matches in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, and most recently, North Carolina, improving at each event. The girls attended the Eastern Junior High-power Clinic and Championship at Camp Butner, North Carolina, and did very well shooting and socializing.

They went down there and didn’t want to leave,. Curt said. They made a lot of friendships at Butner and I think it really helped them a lot.

“I enjoy going to shooting events because I like making friends from all across the country”. said Marie, the youngest. “We used to stay to ourselves but now we feel more comfortable meeting new shooters and getting to know them”. The girls admit they are a unique group because many of the shooting events they attend are populated primarily by boys. Each of them learned to load ammunition prior to shooting in competitions, Curt said. 

These events are a great place for them to meet boys the marrying kind – I’ll be honest. These young guys are very polite and very responsible young men. While dad is traveling with the girls, mom is back home with the girls younger brother, but she attends matches when she can. 

They have an eight-year-old brother helping them load ammo and pretty soon he will join them on the line, once hees 12, Curt said.

Elyse, who shot her personal best at Camp Perry this year, said ”Our mom is learning about shooting and she’s really supportive. She always makes sure we have bug spray, sun tan lotion and food and water. I agree that its fun meeting people and getting an opportunity to improve my shooting and being with my sisters.

I love competing as an individual and team because weere always challenging ourselves to do better. You know what they say, practice makes perfect,. Jenna said. ”

“We are always trying to improve and we don‘t dwell on past mistakes.”

Bob Eikey, 41, of Jeannette, Pennsylvania, the Steel Eagles Highpower Director, said hees happy to have families like the Horomanskies involved. ”To Curtes credit, hees been doing the job of three parents and I know it’s a lot of work dragging three teenagers around to these events”.

Eikey said. ”It’s a sibling-oriented sport. We have also got a couple of brothers and some cousins that shoot with us too. Eikey is assisted by Joe Hendricks, 42, of Wexford, Pennsylvania. Hendricks has a solid history of high-power shooting and coached his own very successful junior team several years ago, Eikey said. ”He’s one of the best coaches in the country.

”We are growing as fast as we can grow and improving at every match,. Eikey said. A former Ohio State University rifle shooter, he’s been participating in highpower for about 10 years and hees enjoying working with juniors,” he said.

”You know, shooting is a sport of small numbers, so we’re trying to grow our programs and do the best we can. We’ve been successful attracting new juniors to our program by attending gun shows and distributing information”. Eikey said.

He said he has been experimenting with new ways to introduce the program to youngsters and has had success attending gun shows and handing out information about the organization. As a result, he attracted about 400 junior shooters who expressed interest.

”We waited for them to contact us and weeve been successful acquiring some promising new shooters. We chased off the Kool-Aid drinkers and those who just wanted to shoot our ammunition and recently we brought on four new shooters”. he said.

”I certainly can’t do this alone, but I will do anything I can to help families grow our team. We have got some very generous sponsors and they supply us with gear and we make the most of it.”

The Steel Eagles 7 of 7 two-person junior team of John Yates, 18, of Hackettstown, New Jersey, and Brian Deyoung, 15, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, took top honors in the At-Large category of the National Trophy Junior Team Match and won Freedomes Fire medallions. The Steel Eagles Gold six-person team placed second in the National Trophy Rifle Team Match behind the California Grizzlies Team Seeley. Firing members for the Steel Eagles were Jacob Perryman, 17, of Pleasant Gap, Joseph Hendricks, Jr., 14, of Wexford, Elyse Horomanski, Nathan Evagash, 16, of Glenshaw, Thomas Trent, 16, of Penn, and Garrett Miller, 19, of West Chester.

US M1 Carbine, this rifle was safe for our grandfathers, why not us?

Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- The history of the M1 rifle is well documented, so there is no need to retell the gun’s famous history.

The truth is that it has become a highly sought after collectible. Over the past decade the prices of the M1 has increased at a pace greater than almost any other military firearm.

“It is the classic World War II weapon,” says Reefe Renforth, advanced collector and dealer of American militaria. “It hasn’t been just the last couple of years, it has been going strong for more than a decade.”

Renforth says the gun’s popularity is in part due to movies and video games.

“A lot of the interest came with the release of Saving Private Ryan and later with Band of Brothers. These created a core of ‘World War II addicts,’ and this is among the classic World War II weapons.”

Add in the fact that many of the younger generation, those who probably would have never paid much attention to World War II, learned about the exploits of the “greatest generation” from video games such as Medal of Honor and Call of Duty. The M1 remains the de facto U.S. infantry weapon in those games, and that inspired a whole new generation of collectors who were suddenly interested in the gun their grandfathers carried 60 years ago.

It is also a fact that the gun was the most widely distributed semi-automatic infantry weapon of the Second World War, and it remained in service through the Korean War and even saw use in the Vietnam War. Thus it would seem like there should be more than enough to go around. But with each conflict the M1 was sent off to service, and sadly like many soldiers not everyone returned home, at least not when the respective conflicts ended.

Throughout the Cold War era the United States supplied M1 Garands and M1 Carbines to various friendly and allied nations. Over the years many of these American-made rifles do come home, and are given back to the United States Army, where they eventually make it to the civilian market through the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Orest Michaels, Chief Operating Officer of the CMP notes that his group does not actually import guns. He says that many M1 rifles are actually “on loan” to other nations, and “when those are no longer needed those rifles come home.” From there the U.S. military, through programs such as the CMP, are able to get those guns on the market.

This brings up the issue of the ongoing saga of the South Korean M1 Garands and M1 Carbines that have been blocked for importation by the United States State Department.

“This comes up every eight to 10 years,” says Michaels. “This happened before, around 2004, and it seems that the South Koreans started it up again, trying to bring the rifles home through different importers.”

A couple of points have come to light. The most notable is that while other nations have happily returned their “borrowed” M1 rifles, in this case maybe that the South Koreans don’t want to simply give the guns back, they want to sell the firearms.

According to the South Korean press, the numbers quoted were around 100,000 to 110,000. That might seem like a large number, but Michaels says those would sell fast.

“There is no reason to believe collectors wouldn’t scoop up the 100,000 rifles if they came up for sale. The AK-47s that were finally allowed in this nation were bought up quickly as well.”

With so much renewed and continued interest in World War II there does seem to be no shortage of demand for the M1. The question is what would 100,000 rifles mean to the price?

“It would affect the bottom end rifles, but really good correct rifles probably wouldn’t budge in price,” says Renforth. “It would make what we call shooters available to the general public.”

It remains a true irony that the M1 rifles, which were made in America, carried by American soldiers and are now desired by collectors can’t come home, yet AK-47s from China, Romania and Russia are imported in ever increasing numbers.

The exact reason for the ban on the importation of the M1 probably won’t be resolved soon. While it comes down to a ban on all weapons and military equipment that was paid for by American tax payers and supplied as a type of “Lend Lease” the question remains why the South Koreans won’t simply give the guns back.

Of course, given the increase in prices – and the fact that South Korea has a lot of these, with FoxNews.com noting the number is actually greater than 800,000 in total counting M1 Garands and M1 Carbines – that could be a lot of money to help bolster the nation’s military budget.

The argument that the guns are potentially dangerous, or could fall into the hands of terrorists is of course nonsensical. The end result, whatever the reason, is the same.

The price for M1 rifles is going up and up, as new movies, TV series such as HBO’s The Pacific, and of course the video games continue to inspire new collectors, and sadly demand will continue to outpace supply. CAMP PERRY, OHIO --(AmmoLand.com)- The 2010 National Matches will once again feature traditional National Rifle Association Championships and Civilian Marks­manship Program National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches and CMP Games Events plus important training activities and special events like the Pistol and Rifle Small Arms Firing Schools.

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland will open this year’s festivities at the First Shot Ceremony here on 12 July at 6:30 p.m. at the Friends of Camp Perry Memorial Plaza, located at the opposite end of the entrance to Camp Perry on Lawrence Road.

The prestigious First Shot Ceremony is a col­orful kickoff featuring the airborne delivery of a ceremonial American Flag by three Ohio National Guard 19th Special Forces para­troopers via Blackhawk helicopter. The flag flies for the duration of the Matches which conclude 17 August. The event hosts more than 6,000 competitors including the top pis­tol and rifle marksmen in the nation and has been a tradition at Camp Perry since 1907.

Gary Anderson, Director of Civilian Marksmanship Emeritus, who recently retired as CMP Director after 10 years of service, will preside over the opening ceremony once again.

After Governor Strickland concludes his remarks, he will officially open the National Matches by firing the ceremonial first shot on the 600-yard Rodri­guez Range located adjacent to the Memorial Plaza.

Highlights of the National Trophy Matches and CMP Games include the Small Arms Firing Schools for pistol and rifle. Both programs, open for public participation, are conducted by the elite US Army Marksmanship Unit from Fort Benning, Georgia. Instructors are both competitive members and coaches of the Army shooting teams, so participants get hands-on training by active duty marksman­ship professionals.

The highly-popular schools civilians how to safely handle and operate the M9 9mm service pistol and the M16 service rifle in the classroom and later fire them on the range. Participants fire in actual live matches at the con­clusion of each school. The pistol school begins with registration on 11 July and is conducted on 12 July. The rifle school begins on 30 July and is conducted on 31 July and 1 August.

This year CMP has added two new pistol trophies – the Perry DeFino Trophy will be awarded to the High Junior who fires the Standard Smallbore Pistol in the National Trophy Individual Pistol Match and the General Patton Trophy, to be awarded to the Active Army competitor who fires the highest individual aggregate score in the National Trophy Individual and National Trophy Team Matches.

CMP Air Gun Events have expanded to eight different competitions in air pistol, air rifle and National Match Air Rifle. All air gun events are con­ducted at the CMP’s state of the art Marksmanship Center, equipped with a computer controlled scoring system used in the finest indoor marksman­ship venues around the world.

The always expanding Rimfire Sporter Match now features a tactical rifle classification and a Youth-Adult team match designed to en­courage greater family participation. Rimfire Sporter allows participants to bring their off the rack .22 rifle to the range and compete in a three-position match.

It’s a great way to introduce recreational shooters to an organized competi­tion with an emphasis on youth and family participation. The Rimfire Sporter Match begins with registration and a free clinic on 24 July and is conducted the following day. More than 400 entries were registered in the 2009 match.

CMP is also excited to once again present the President’s Rifle Match on 2 August which concludes in the afternoon with a spectator-friendly shoot-off among the event’s 20 top shooters to determine the ultimate winner. The coveted President’s Rifle Trophy is presented to the best of the best rifle shooter from a field of more than 1,200 competitors, both civilian and mili­tary.

The shoot-off finale is a 10-shot match with scoring in full view of spectators who can track each shooter’s progress shot for shot on large scoreboards posted next to each competitor.

For fans of historical rifle competition CMP will once again conduct highly popular com­petitive games events. The CMP M1 Car­bine, John C. Garand, Springfield and Vin­tage Military Rifle Matches bring out the best in sportsmanship and history as many partici­pants dress in period military clothing and fire competitive matches. These matches run 5 August through 7 August when the CMP phase of the Matches concludes with an eve­ning awards and closing ceremony. NRA highpower matches continue through 18 Au­gust.

The First Shot Ceremony is open to the public and can easily be found by entering Camp Perry on Lawrence Road directly from US Route 6, just west of Port Clinton. The Memorial Plaza is at the end of Lawrence Road and nearby parking is easily accessible.

AP .30-06 M2 BALL: The .30-06 AP ammo that we now have available includes headstamps: AYR, SL, TW, and LC. Dates of manufacture vary from the 1940s to the 1950s. Most of the ammo is corrosive, but some may be non-corrosive.

The ammo is packaged in 8 round M1 Garand enbloc clips, in bandoleers, in spam cans.

Purchases of multiple cans will be shipped in what appear to be the original wooden crates (two spam cans per crate). Cans and crates will be selected luck of the draw as to the headstamp.

These states are: California, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Tennessee, New York, New Jersey, Hawaii, and Nevada. Residents of these and all other states should check your state and local laws on ammunition sales before ordering. CMP Sponsored 2010 USMC & AF JROTC Service Championship

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – -(AmmoLand.com)- On 12 April CMP representatives met with representatives of the NJ State Police and the NJ Attorney General’s office.

At issue was the fact that CMP customers were receiving rifles at their home and not from a firearms dealer licensed by the state.

It was the opinion of the representatives of both the NJ State Police and the AG’s office that NJ requires all firearm transactions be face to face and the transfer of a rifle be made to the customer by a NJ licensed dealer.

Therefore, NJ residents cannot certify paragraph K on the CMP order form that reads: “I further certify that I will not be in violation, by reason of my receipt or possession of a rifle, of any state law or published ordinance applicable where I reside”.

Effective immediately, rifles sold and shipped to NJ residents must be shipped to NJ licensed firearms dealers. Customers should provide CMP with copies of the dealer’s FFL and NJ State license, along with the CMP order form.

This applies to all rifle orders we have already received and not yet shipped. Each of those customers will be contacted individually this week.

New Jersey residents who visit either CMP store may purchase and pick up rifles without the necessity of going through a NJ licensed dealer.

Civilian Marksmanship Program

ANNISTON, ALABAMA --(AmmoLand.com)- Inspired by 1950s Soviet rifle world champion Anatoli Bogdanov, and with virtually no money for proper shooting equipment or ammunition, Gary Anderson set his sights on the highest goal in shooting as a teenager – to be the world’s best.

He earned two Olympic gold medals, seven world championships, six world records and 16 national championships. No other American has won more Olympic and world championship three-position rifle titles.

Anderson eventually transitioned from world champion to mentor – authoring, instructing and leading thousands of US shooters, young and old, civilian and military alike down a path of marksmanship, firearms safety and sportsmanship. It’s a never-ending path he says and the past 10 years at CMP has been a rewarding chapter in a career that remains open-ended.

While the face of marksmanship and firearms safety at the Civilian Marksmanship Program has changed from a single leader to an empowered team of CMP staffers, one thing is certain – Anderson’s legacy and impact on CMP programs will remain forever indelible.

The soft-spoken Nebraskan, with the help of a creative staff, grew a fledgling national civilian marksmanship and firearms safety program into the premier organization of its kind today. The CMP’s programs have touched hundreds of coaches and thousands of shooters across the US.

Anderson, who was appointed Director of Civilian Marksmanship in 1999, announced his retirement in December. He was honored here on 28 March at a Tribute Dinner one day after the close of the 2010 National Junior ROTC Air Rifle Championship – a program he fostered eight years earlier.

The dinner, presided over by CMP Board Vice Chair Judy Legerski, was attended by friends, family, CMP Directors, staffers and dozens of Anderson’s extended family – military and civilian coaches of youth marksmanship programs from across the country. Several others who could not attend the dinner sent cards and letters to Anderson, which were displayed in an album.

In appreciation of Anderson’s service, CMP Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Charles Maddox presented him with a Creedmoor Sports/Anschutz-built National Match Air Rifle, bearing serial number 1.

Maddox explained to the audience that Anderson inspired the development of the new competition rifle – an air-powered pellet-firing twin of the popular AR15/M16 highpower rifle. Creedmoor Sports markets the rifle commercially as the Gary Anderson Signature Model in his honor.

Later in the evening, Anderson explained how much he appreciated the NM Garand because as a young Corporal in the US Army in the early 1960s, he couldn’t afford the $102 cost to purchase the National Match M1 that was issued to him for firing in the National Matches.

Col. James Vanderbleek, Army JROTC Director, presented Anderson a specially engraved Daisy Model 887 sporter air rifle in appreciation of his development of the National JROTC Air Rifle Program.

“I gave him three rules upon his retirement. You won’t be organizing my spices, you won’t be grocery shopping with me and you will be making your own lunch.” she joked.

Mrs. Anderson reflected on his devotion to family, shooting sports, theology, bird watching, photography and world culture. She had fond memories of hosting the first-ever summer rifle camp at their home in Axtell, Nebraska in 1970.

She shared a tender moment in 1964 when Anderson was given a parade through Hastings celebrating his first Olympic gold medal awarded in Tokyo – the first ever won by a Nebraskan in any sport.

“He stopped the parade and got out of the convertible to greet my grandmother who was sitting in a wheelchair along the road. They exchanged a really big hug,” she recalled, emotionally.

Mrs. Anderson discussed the many exciting events in their lives including Anderson’s presentation of the first Distinguished International Shooter Badge by President John F. Kennedy in the Oval Office in 1963, a second gold medal in Mexico City in 1968, his Masters of Divinity degree, his term as a Nebraska State Senator, his appearance on the television show To Tell The Truth and their many travels abroad.

“We have a wonderful life. We have raised extraordinary children. We have the brightest and most adorable grandchildren,” she said.

“Gary is a multi-tasker, he does not waste time – ever. He does not watch movies and he does not play games. He has little tolerance for negativity or things not intuitive,” she said.

The Andersons will be spending more time with family and they are interested in supporting the creation of a Shooting Sports Museum. Future travel plans include more tours of Germany – a favorite destination, she added.

“We have an abundance of friends from all over the world. We have had phenomenal travel experiences and we enjoy good health,” she said. “God has richly blessed us.”

Anderson gave closing remarks about his upbringing, shooting career and his interests in furthering the development of shooting sports at home and abroad.

With the help of his father, who taught him to hunt birds and small game on their farm, Anderson sponged up every bit of shooting knowledge he could absorb and melded it with countless hours of self-driven practice.

Growing up in Nebraska with no shooting aids, no coaches and very little ammunition, his drive to become a world-class marksman overcame all of those obstacles.

Since the USSR was dominating shooting sports in international competition in the 1950s, he modeled his training after Russian champ Anatoli Ivanovich Bogdanov, who credited dry-firing as one of the most important parts of rifle training.

“The dream of becoming as good as Bogdanov inspired me,” Anderson said, in spite of rising political tensions between the US and Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Anderson said Bogdanov was “the greatest shooter in the world,” whose accomplishments included Olympic gold medals in three-position, 300 meter free rifle in Helsinki, Finland in 1952 and the 50 meter smallbore free rifle in Melbourne, Australia in 1956.

“The importance of dry-firing resonated very well with me because I didn’t have the money to buy bullets,” Anderson said. “I improvised and went to work and things began to come together for me.”

“I came to the conclusion though, that the only real way I could realize my dreams was to get to the Army Marksmanship Unit,” he explained.

He said he solicited a tryout with the AMU, penning a letter and submitting sample scores to then Col. Thomas Sharpe, the head of, and considered by many, the founder of USAMU. Though many speculated that Anderson’s scores couldn’t be trusted, Col. Sharpe “for some, yet unknown reason” granted Anderson a 90-day trial, he said.

After 30 days of dry-firing, he was allowed to fire a 40-shot standing match and his score, the second best in the unit that day, sealed his AMU assignment.

Anderson then posed a few hypothetical questions to the gathering: “What if I had been a member of a regular shooting club, with a regular coach or instructor where my model would have been the best shooter in the club? What would have happened to Gary Anderson?”

“How would shooting history been different if Col. Tom Sharpe had decided that this kid was lying and hadn’t given me a tryout with the unit? History sometimes depends on those kinds of decisions.”

He answered his final question by describing what it was like to make the transition from a competition shooter to a career of devoting his efforts to serving shooters and the sport of shooting, like he had for the last 10 years at CMP.

“To be a champion, your egos have to be totally focused on ‘Me.’ To be a teacher, a sports administrator, a coach – to be a leader, your ego has to be totally focused on ‘You.’ “

Anderson said he has “very vivid memories of being blown off by many experienced shooters who told me to figure it out for myself” when he was a young competition shooter on the Army International Shooting Team.

“The culture then was not one of sharing information with new shooters,” he said.

But he credited three mentors who made a huge impact on his ability to transition when the time came – International Rifle Coach Bill Krilling, 1964 Olympic 300 meter bronze medalist Martin Gunnarrson and world champion pistol shooter Bill Blankenship – all of whom answered his questions and made a very deep impression on him.

“I swore to myself that if I ever did make it to the top, I would do my best to share what I had learned.” He also said it always gratifies him to see young people reach their goals in shooting – he said it’s as rewarding as all the medals he’s won in competition.

In the end, Anderson thanked his wife, the CMP Board, its staff and the shooting sports community for making his career at CMP at success.

“No one ever does anything great alone. Our quest at CMP has always been one of “we” not “me,” he added.

The reality is “retirement” is a word that can’t be found in Anderson’s lexicon – at least not one that applies to him. He hit the marksmanship accelerator as a youngster growing up on a farm in Axtell and hasn’t let off – and he shows no signs of doing so anytime soon.

“Retirement is a negative concept to me. There’s still a lot of work to be done in shooting sports and I will do my share,” he said.

Today Anderson serves a DCM Emeritus where he will provide occasional instruction and consulting. He will remain busy in the US and abroad as Vice President of the International Shooting Sports Federation (the first American to serve in that capacity) and as President of the Board of USA Shooting.

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – -(AmmoLand.com)- This year the CMP has implemented several changes to the Sanctioned Match/Clinic program. The first change is the addition of a $5.00 shipping and handling fee.

If you are requesting scorecards, certificates and/or catalogs, you will be required to pay the $5.00 shipping and handling fee. If you are not requesting match materials, the shipping and handling fee will be waived.

The ammunition allocation process has also changed. The application form will no longer list the ammunition price or configuration. If you request ammunition for your event, an ammunition allocation form listing the price and quantity you are approved for will be sent to the event contact person six to eight weeks prior to the date of the match. If you apply for multiple events throughout the year, an ammunition allocation form will be sent six to eight week prior to the date of each event. The ammunition allocation form will be sent via email (hard copies will be sent to those not providing an email address). Once you receive the ammunition allocation form, please complete it and submit it to Mike Conrad, mconrad@odcmp.com, at the CMP North Store. If the ammunition allocation form is not received 30 days after the date of match, then the form is invalid.

Gold, silver and bronze CMP Achievement Pins may be purchased by sanctioned match sponsors to award to competitors in Garand, Springfield, Vintage Military, M1 Carbine and Rimfire Sporter Matches.

The Sanctioned Match/Clinic application form should be submitted six to eight weeks prior to the date of the event. This will allow ample time for the ammunition allocation form to be sent and processed. It is also helpful if the Sanctioned Match/Clinic application is submitted prior to the National Matches (July – August) if the event takes place in July or August as that is our busiest time of the year. Also, if you plan to purchase your allocated ammunition during the National Matches at Camp Perry, it is required you make prior arrangements with Mike Conrad at the CMP North Store.

2010 Air Rifle Camp Registration Opens with a Flurry

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – -(AmmoLand.com)-  On 25 January registration officially opened for the 2010 CMP Summer Air Rifle Camps, and parents and coaches began faxing in forms early that morning to ensure that their athletes had a slot in the camp of their choice.

No camps filled on the first day of registration, but all did receive registrations and early indications show that interest in the 2010 Camp season will be strong. Interested applicants are encouraged to send in registrations soon while ample slots are still available.

Those familiar with the CMP Summer Camps most likely have noticed the changes in the 2010 program from previous years. In accordance with new camp guidelines put in place by the CMP Board of Directors, all full-length three-position air rifle camps will be held at CMP Competition Centers in Anniston, Alabama, and Port Clinton, Ohio. This means that all campers will have the opportunity to shoot on state-of-the-art electronic ranges. Each CMP Competition Center features 80 electronic firing points that display shooters’ scores instantly on computer monitors. This system also allows CMP to post live scores on the internet, so anyone with access to the CMP website can track live feeds from competitions held at CMP venues.

Also for planning purposes, coaches and parents should note that all camps will now be commuter only, so participants attending camp from out of town will have to make their own housing plans. To assist with this process, links for housing options have been provided on the individual camp information pages on the Main Camp Information page.

Since all regular camps will be held at CMP facilities that are located in the Eastern United States, outreach clinics are being designed to deliver mini-camp experiences in the Western part of the country. This is an expansion of the CMP Clinic program that has been in place for several years. Three of these clinics will be held in the summer of 2010, utilizing the summer camp staff as instructors

The 2010 camp schedule will continue to include an advanced camp in the program. The CMP/AMU Advanced Smallbore Camp will take place at Fort Benning, which is home to the Army Marksmanship Unit. Like the CMP Competition Centers, the AMU ranges at Fort Benning, Georgia, are fully electronic

These are the primary changes for the 2010 camp season, but one thing that will remain the same is CMP’s commitment to the quality of instruction provided at the camps. We continue to recruit the top collegiate athletes for our counselor staff, and have Olympic and National Team members on-hand to share their expertise with the campers. We will also continue to fine-tune our instructional material so that participants receive the training they need to reach their shooting goals

CAMP PERRY, OHIO - -(AmmoLand.com)- Gary Anderson, who served the CMP as the Director of Civilian Marksman­ship for the past ten years, officially retired from that position on the 31st of December, 2009. Anderson, who celebrated his 70th birthday in October, announced his decision to retire at the last meeting of the CMP Board of Directors in October. He also has already shared this announcement with several CMP constituent groups.

Anderson’s retirement means he will no longer be actively involved in day-to-day CMP program operations and event management. He will, however, continue his association with the CMP in a part-time consulting capac­ity where he will work on several projects that include training curriculum development, master instructor training, rulebook editing and technical writing. He will now have the title DCM Emeritus.

The CMP has no immediate plans to appoint a new Director of Civilian Marksmanship. Leadership of CMP programs will now come under the CMP’s Chief Operating Officer, Orest Michaels. Michaels, who has been responsible for CMP sales operations since 1998, will continue to work from his offices at CMP South in Anniston, Alabama.

During his tenure at CMP, Anderson guided the development of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force JROTC marksmanship programs, the expansion of CMP Games rifle events, the doubling of participation in the CMP National Matches events, the crea­tion of the CMP Master Instructor training program and its instructional clinics and the implementation of a series of innovations to improve the conduct of CMP competitions and training events. His leadership in the National Three-Position Air Rifle Council contributed to the growth of junior three-position air rifle shooting. He played key roles in the construction of the CMP Compe­tition Centers at Camp Perry and Anniston and in making the CMP a national leader in using modern technology and the Internet to manage competitions and publicize shooting results to an expanded public.

Anderson said, “My work as the DCM has been richly fulfilling and I am grateful to the CMP and its Board of Directors for the opportunities they gave me to realize so many of my dreams and expectations for the shoot­ing sports. I enjoyed the challenges the members of the CMP programs staff and I faced and take pride in what we have accomplished together, but the time for change has come. I still have many other things I would like to accomplish both inside and outside of the shooting sports. Most impor­tantly, I have a wonderful wife and family who have sacrificed too much al­ready and deserve more of my time.”

Anderson added that he now expects to have more time to devote to the Interna­tional Shooting Sports Federation, the world governing body of Olympic shoot­ing where he is a Vice President and to USA Shooting, the U. S. Olympic shoot­ing governing body where he was re­cently elected President.

The CMP Board is planning a formal trib­ute to Gary Anderson that will take place at Anniston, Alabama on 28 March, after the 2010 National JROTC Air Rifle Championship.

CAMP PERRY, OHIO - -(AmmoLand.com)- Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force JROTC rifle teams kicked off their 2009-2010 competition year as they competed in the 2009-2010 JROTC Air Rifle Postal Competitions.

For the past seven year, the Civilian Marksmanship Program has overseen the scoring of JROTC 3×10 three-position air rifle postal competitions. These annual postal matches determine which JROTC unit teams and individual cadets advance to compete in their respective service’s JROTC shoulder-to-shoulder Championship.

From those Championships, the best unit teams and individuals representing each service advance to the JROTC National Championship. Over 6,700 cadets participated in this year’s postal matches. Scores for the 2009 Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy Postal Competitions can be found on the CMP web page at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchResultSearch.cgi?designation=AIR.

Postal targets were fired in October, November and early December, with a target mailing deadline of 4 December. In all, over 20,000 targets were scored between the 1st and 18th of December when all scores were posted on the CMP web site.

To handle such a large number of targets, the CMP used its state-of-the-art electronic scoring system called Orion. This system uses Visual Imaging Scoring (VIS) technology to score the 10-bull paper targets that were scanned at 300dpi so that the Orion software could score them. This system has been used for the past three years. For more information on the Orion Scoring System, visit the Orion website is at www.orionscoringsystem.com.

The Orion software also allows competitors to not only see their scores on the CMP website, but also to see precise details about each shot, including its x/y coordinates, radial distance from the target center and tenth-ring score. Orion technology makes it possible to download printouts showing facsimiles of each shooter’s shot groups for the three positions. A major advantage of Orion is that all targets are scored according to the same standard to eliminate many scoring variations inherent in human scoring.

The top individual precision score in the 2009 JROTC postal was a 296-24X total fired by Aaron Pogorzelski of Fabens High School NJROTC in Fabens, Texas. The top sporter score was a 282-9X fired by Yvonne Swiontek of Zion Benton HS NJROTC in Illinois. The overall top team scores were an 1155-62X precision total fired by Chattahoochee County High School AJROTC in Cusseta, Georgia, and an 1112-33X sporter team score fired by Zion Benton High School NJROTC in Zion, Illinois. Downloadable printouts like the one shown above for Yvonne Swiontek, the top Sporter Individual in the JROTC Postal, are available for all cadets. The Orion Scoring System offers precise details about each shot, including its x/y coordinates, radial distance from the target center and tenth-ring score.

Score data and shot group print-outs like the ones shown here for the top sporter and precision class shooters may be downloaded from the CMP website. To obtain a score data sheet, open an individual results list for one of the services and then click on the “Aggregate” total that is shown in red for the shooter whose scores you wish to see. A PDF file with the shot data and a facsimile of each position’s shot group will download.

The postal competitions will be followed by JROTC Service Air Rifle Championships. All Service Championships will be held at Camp Perry, Ohio. The Navy JROTC Service Championship will be on 11-13 February 2010. The Army JROTC Service Championship will be on 18-20 February 2010. The Marine Corps JROTC Service Championship will be on 25-27 February 2010. The Air Force JROTC Championship will also be on 25-27 February 2010.

Those championships will not only select the top teams in each JROTC command, but they will also identify the teams that will represent each service in the National JROTC Air Rifle Championship at Anniston, Alabama on 25-27 March 2010.

Port Clinton, Ohio --(AmmoLand.com)- The CMP is planning to conduct a se­ries of JMIC Master Instructor Training Workshops in 2010 in order to train new JMIC Master Instructors as well as to retrain current active JMIC Mas­ter Instructors who were originally trained in 2005 and whose certificates expire in 2010.

The first 2010 JMIC Master Instructor Workshop will be held at Camp Perry, Ohio on 16-17 January, the same weekend as the Camp Perry Open air rifle competition.

These two-day training sessions will thor­oughly review the JMIC curriculum that Master Instructors must use to train and certify new JROTC marksmanship instructors.

The workshops also of­fer opportunities to practice the methods of instruction in the JMIC course and serve as a means of evaluating the current JROTC marksmanship pro­gram to recommend improvements.

Actual experience in conducting an ac­tive JROTC or junior club air rifle marksmanship program is required to qualify to attend. The official program for the Master Instructor Workshops will be posted on the CMP website later this month.

Port Clinton, Ohio --(AmmoLand.com)- Thanks to generous donations from two long-time competitive shooters who are both Distinguished Badge holders and who have been regular National Matches participants, two new trophies were recently added to the CMP’s National Trophy Collection. Both trophies are to be awarded in the National Trophy Pistol Matches and will replace older trophies that the CMP Trophy Committee determined were not of National Trophy quality.

The new TMCSS G. P. “Perry” DeFino Trophy, donated by Ron Krelstein, Germantown, Tennessee, will be presented to the High Junior in the National Trophy Individual Pistol Match.

The TMCSS G. P. “Perry” DeFino Trophy was donated by Ron Krelstein of Germantown, Tennessee. The new Perry DeFino Trophy will be awarded to the High Junior in the National Trophy Individual Pistol Match. The trophy itself is a two-foot high bronze titled “Cougar Attack” that was created by artist Antoine Barye. It depicts an early 1800s mountain man and his horse engaged in a ferocious battle with a mountain lion.

Krelstein is a Double Distinguished shooter. He earned his Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge in 1964 and then took up service rifle shooting in the 1990s to earn his Distinguished Rifleman Badge in 1995. Krelstein donated the trophy to honor a long-time U. S. Navy pistol shooter whom he described as “my friend and mentor for 50 years.” DeFino was the very first Interservice Pistol Champion, Double Distinguished (1955 Pistol, 1959 Rifle) and a 2650 three-gun pistol shooter. He passed away in the summer of 2008.

Krelstein credited DeFino with “selflessly sharing his knowledge and experience with new shooters and older shooters alike.” He noted, “while this trophy bears his name, it also honors all of those who serve as mentors to those just beginning this sport.”

Krelstein, who is a practicing attorney, donated another important National Trophy Pistol Matches Trophy in 2007, the Rose Krelstein Trophy, which is awarded to the High Woman in an aggregate of President’s and National Trophy Individual Match scores.

The new General George Patton Trophy, donated by an anonymous donor, will be awarded to the High Army shooter in an aggregate of the National Trophy Individual and National Trophy Team Matches scores.

The second new trophy that was added to the National Trophy Collection will be known as the General George Patton Trophy. The General Patton Trophy was donated by a loyal CMP supporter who admires the men and women who defend our country and our freedom. The anonymous donor earned their Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge in 1992 and has been a competitor in every recent National Matches.

The Patton Trophy honors the well-known World War II General. General Patton commanded corps and armies in North Africa, Sicily and the European Theater of Operations. He commanded the U. S. Third Army through the hedgerows of Normandy and across France and successfully broke a siege of American Forces at the Battle of the Bulge.

General Patton has a fascinating connection with competitive pistol shooting. When he was a 2nd Lieutenant, having graduated from West Point in 1909, he competed in the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm in the first ever Modern Pentathlon event. He did well in the competition, placing fifth overall, and might have won an Olympic medal were it not for a shot in the pistol competition that was scored as a miss. In pistol shooting, Patton used a .38 caliber pistol, while most competitors used .22 caliber firearms. Patton claimed that the shot scored as a miss was a double that passed through a shot group formed by previous shots. Unfortunately, the judges did not honor his claim and he missed his chance at more lasting Olympic athlete fame.

The new General George Patton Trophy will be awarded to the High Army competitor in an aggregate of National Trophy Individual and National Trophy Team Matches scores. The Patton Trophy is a bronze bust of then Lt. General Patton that stands slightly over three feet high.

The CMP extends its sincere thanks to both Ron Krelstein and an anonymous donor for their much-appreciated donations that have provided important new trophies for the National Matches while helping the CMP upgrade the overall quality of the National Trophy Collection.

United States Army Marksmanship Unit

FORT BENNING, Ga. - -(AmmoLand.com)- The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Service Pistol Team will host a Pairs Conventional Pistol shooting camp here March 10-12 2010.

The focus of the camp will be for beginner and intermediate pistol shooters of all ages as well as for coaches. There is no cost to attend the camp; however, junior campers must be accompanied by an adult participant, and any adult attendee must bring a junior to the camp.

Instruction for the event will be provided by the national award-winning shooters of the USAMU Service Pistol Team at Phillips Range. An NRA Conventional 2700 Pistol Match will be held on March 13, and participants are encouraged to stay and test their skills. All attendees must provide their own shooting equipment, lodging and meals.

CAMP PERRY, OHIO –-(AmmoLand.com)- More than 300 shooters and guests attended the second annual Camp Perry Marksmanship Center Open House on Saturday, 19 September, commemorating the center’s second year of operations and a new shooter’s mural.

Visitors were treated to several activities including the dedication of the unique Antolik Mural, all-day turkey shoots on the world-class airgun range and live participation on the Ohio Army National Guard’s Engagement Skills Trainer (EST).

The Antolik Mural, a 100-foot-long by 20-foot-high handcrafted wall painting, honors current and past Camp Perry competitors, but most importantly recognizes the development of the nation’s young shooters. The mural was painted by Jerry Antolik of Hudson, Wyoming and is perhaps the largest painting of its kind dedicated to shooting sports, according to Gary Anderson, Director of Civilian Marksmanship.

At the mid-day mural dedication ceremony, Anderson praised Antolik’s work and provided a brief history of shooting sports art around the world. In traveling the sports shooting world Anderson compared the new mural to ancient archery tomb paintings in Egypt, centuries-old German murals and art he saw in China during the 2008 Olympic Games.

“To my knowledge, there is no larger mural dedicated to shooting sports in the world than the Antolik Mural,” Anderson said. “It is truly one of a kind.”

The mural depicts indoor and outdoor shooting scenes from Camp Perry and features many familiar sights including the camp’s water tower, a tractor pulling a shooter shuttle, a bald eagle and the ever-present seagulls.

But the centerpiece of the mural is a display of shooters past and present, including a row of precision air rifle shooters which dominates the center of the 100-foot-long wall at the range’s entrance.

In his remarks Antolik told the audience that the three-month project was a labor of love and he thanked the CMP for its commitment to, and vision for the development of shooting sports in the U.S.

“I’ve been coming here a long time. It’s a great place that has a special quality unlike any other,” Antolik said. “It is an honor to display my artwork here.”

“I think the sweetest thing of all is that they dedicated my mural during a turkey shoot,” he said with tongue in cheek.

Visitors who fired on the airgun range were first given a safety briefing and sporter air rifle instruction and then an opportunity to win a turkey with the best center shot in groups of 10 shooters, firing 10 shots each with sporter air rifles. In all, 30 turkeys were awarded to participants. All equipment and pellets were provided by CMP.

Austin Jess, 15 and his grandfather Ron, 68 of Fremont, Ohio participated in the open house festivities for the second year. The St. Joseph Central Catholic High School student said he’s never shot competitively but enjoys coming to the marksmanship center.

“If I had more time I’d be interested in shooting competitively,” he said. Golf, basketball and his favorite sport of baseball keep him busy though.

“Actually, it’s really relaxing, but you need a lot of focus,” he said.

Bill Keaton, 53, of Grafton, Ohio visited the center for the first time and said he was surprised by the size of the facility. Keaton is a Cleveland Center air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration.

“I plan to shoot a whole lot more when I retire, but I’m not sure yet when that’s going to happen,” Keaton said. He is a 25-year veteran controller and helped work air traffic on September 11, 2001.

Keaton shoots regularly in a 12-week handgun league near home, but caught the air rifle bug at the open house. He later purchased a reconditioned Daisy sporter rifle at the CMP store and plans to practice at home.

Jake Gladwell, 12 and his father Tim, 45, of Sandusky, Ohio also visited Camp Perry for the first time. Jake said he heard about the open at school, researched it on the Internet and convinced his dad to participate.

“He told me about it last night,” Tim said, so the Gladwells took the opportunity to shoot the turkey match and visit the National Guard’s EST adjacent to the airgun range later.

The Gladwells shoot a number of rifles and shotguns at home and said they enjoyed shooting at the CMP’s new indoor range. They said they are likely to take advantage of the weekly public practice sessions on Tuesday evenings.

“We’ve always enjoyed target shooting and this was a lot of fun,” Tim said.

Several guests visited and “shot” on the National Guard’s EST simulator with converted A4 service rifles. Participants were given the opportunity to fire in an industrial scenario on a massive video screen. The objective was to shoot oncoming enemy soldiers who ran for cover between buildings, ore piles and other structures.

Each shooter was given 30-round magazines and could fire semi-auto or in three-shot bursts. Firing in unlimited mode, participants could change out empty magazines and continue firing until time elapsed. Other than firing lasers at interactive targets and air-driven bolt actuators, the rifles function exactly like combat weapons, which saves a significant amount of ammunition for training purposes.

Camp Perry, Ohio - -(AmmoLand.com)- The 2009 National Trophy Rifle Matches got underway yesterday at Camp Perry, Ohio.

The first two matches have already been completed. The President’s Rifle Match, perhaps the most prestig­ious rifle match in America, will be fired today.

The top 100 out of a total of 1,300 competitors will be­come members of the “President’s 100.”

The winner, who will be determined after a pressure-packed final between the top 20 competitors, by tradi­tion receives a letter of congratu­lations from the President of the United States.

Early Presi­dent’s Rifle Match results will be posted by 11:00 AM. By 2:00 PM, you will be able to see complete scores for the first 30 shots. That will tell you who made the Presi­dent’s 100 this year as well as who made the top 20 to advance to the final where the winner is determined.

The most exciting part of the day will start at 3:30 PM when the top 20 shooters fire a 10-shot shoot-off to de­termine who receives the coveted Presidential letter. Fi­nal round scores are added to scores for the first 30 shots to determine the winner.

Grand Island, Nebraska - -(AmmoLand.com)- Small Arms Firing School (SAFS) rifle students will shoot Hornady 223 Rem 75 gr BTHP match ammunition from M16 5.56mm service rifles issued by the school.

Small Arms Firing Schools are held annually during the National Matches as teaching opportunities for anyone interested in learning about shooting or improving their scores. The Pistol and Rifle Schools are conducted by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) and sponsored by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). Schools feature two days of instruction from the nation’s best rifle and pistol shooters, and conclude with the opportunity to shoot in an EIC match on the country’s most famous range.

Hornady is also sponsoring four reloading clinics, August 1 and 2. Conducted by Dave Emary, Hornady Chief Ballistic Scientist, the clinics will feature basic reloading safety and beginning techniques for service and match rifles.  Advanced-level clinics are also being offered.

A $20 registration fee is required, and all who attend will receive a $20 certificate for Hornady merchandise redeemable at Camp Perry. Class size is limited to 20, so pre-registration is required and can be completed online on the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) website. Junior shooters interested in learning how to get started in reloading are especially encouraged to attend.

CAMP PERRY, OHIO - -(ShootingWire.com)- If you are or know of a JROTC high school senior or ROTC college underclass cadet in good standing who participates on a competitive rifle club or varsity team, it’s time to spread the word that applications are available to apply for a one-thousand dollar CMP ROTC scholarship. The deadline for applications is 5 March 2009.

This year the CMP will award 100 scholarships for the 2009-2010 academic year. The CMP is also pleased to announce that in addition being available to Army, Navy and U. S. Marine Corps students, the CMP ROTC Scholarship Program is now open to Air Force JROTC seniors and Air Force ROTC cadets.

Now in its ninth year, the CMP ROTC Scholarship Program provides up to 100 one-thousand dollar scholarships to students who excel in rifle marksmanship, who are enrolled or will enroll in ROTC, who have excellent academic and leadership records and who have the potential to serve as officers in the U.S. Armed Forces. The scholarships date back to 2000 when 35 ROTC Cadets were awarded CMP funding for college. Since then, the CMP has awarded more than $700,000 in scholarships. Though the number of applicants always exceeds the total scholarships available, all cadets who feel they meet the requirements are strongly encouraged to apply.

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must have achieved at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average. High school seniors must be current members of a high school JROTC rifle team who intend to enroll in ROTC in college. College underclassmen must be enrolled in ROTC and be active in a college varsity, club or ROTC rifle team. Scholarship boards select successful applicants in March or April and announcements of scholarship recipients are typically released in May. Scholarship checks are sent in August to the ROTC units where the scholarship recipients are enrolled to attend college classes in the fall.

With the rising costs of a college education, the CMP ROTC Scholarship Program can help ROTC students who excel in rifle marksmanship meet the high costs of books, fees and other college expenses.

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – More than 500 high school Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) cadets from across the US and Department of Defense Schools overseas, together with their coaches and parents will visit the Port Clinton, Ohio area between February 12 and 28 to compete in All Service Air Rifle Championships to determine Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force JROTC national individual and team champions. In addition, the top competitors in each championship will advance to the National JROTC Air Rifle Championship at Fort Benning, Georgia in March.

Spectators from the Northwest Ohio area are welcome to attend any or all competitions to see the what sporter and precision class air rifle shooting entails and to give the area youth an opportunity to learn more about CMP’s many junior shooting programs.

“We are delighted to host so many fine young competitors at our state-of-the-art air rifle range,” said Gary Anderson, CMP’s Director of Civilian Marksmanship. “We welcome the nation’s best JROTC air rifle competitors to our new facility where they will find a safe, comfortable, spectator friendly and highly competitive atmosphere.” Camp Perry Marksmanship Center facilities are comparable to the best airgun ranges in the world that host International Sport Shooting Federation (ISSF) competitions like Beijing and Munich. Anderson said, “they are definitely the finest facility of this type in the entire Western Hemisphere.”

The JROTC competition process actually began last November when nearly 7,000 cadets and 1,200 JROTC unit teams began firing on CMP-provided postal targets at their home ranges. The CMP then used its Orion Visual Imaging Scoring system to scan and score the 21,800 10-bullseye paper targets electronically. Scores in last fall’s postals determined qualifiers for this month’s JROTC Service Championships.

Competitors in the JROTC Championships will fire with either “precision” or “sporter” class air rifles. In general, precision rifles are high tech and feature adjustable stocks and triggers, internal rechargeable air tanks or CO2 cylinders, etc. Sporter rifles are low-cost, conventional appearing air rifles without specialized adjustments, but they also utilize air or CO2 cylinders to power their projectiles.

The competition entails 60-shot three-position events to be fired on two successive days. Each day, competitors will fire 20 shots each in prone, standing and kneeling positions at a 10-meter (33-feet) target with a bull’s-eye that is only one-half millimeter in diameter. Individual finals among the top eight sporter and top eight precision class competitors will be fired on the afternoon of the second day. That will be followed by huge awards banquets in the Camp Perry Club House on Saturday evenings.

Camp Perry is located five miles west of Port Clinton, Ohio on State Highway #2. Two lighthouse towers on the north side of the highway mark the entrance. To drive to the Competition Center, proceed north to the flagpole and then turn right, drive 300 yards and turn left into the Center parking lot.

Qualifying for the four service championships during the postal competitions had each cadet fire a 30-shot course of fire. The highest individual precision rifle results in this year’s JROTC postal were 296 x 300 scores fired by Lynnise Johnson of Patch High School in Stuttgart, Germany and Jacob Brown of Luella HS in Georgia. The highest individual sporter class score was a 284 x 300 fired by Yvonne Swiontek, of Zion Benton HS in Illinois. All three will compete at Camp Perry.
