COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –-(AmmoLand.com)- USA Shooting is pleased to announce that pistol shooter Keith Sanderson (San Antonio, Texas) and shotgun shooter Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) have been selected as the 2009 USAS Athletes of the Year.

These athletes were chosen based on the USAS Athlete of the Year Nomination and Selection Procedure, which is a points system that rewards performance in major competitions.

Sanderson, a 2008 Olympian, earned the Male Athlete of the Year honor after an outstanding World Cup season in 2009, winning an unprecedented three medals on the ISSF World Cup circuit. Sanderson captured the gold at the Beijing World Cup, silver in Changwon, Korea and bronze at the World Cup Munich in the Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event. Sanderson also grabbed fifth place at the Milan World Cup. In addition, Sanderson finished in third place at the 2009 Rifle/Pistol Fall Selection Match at Fort Benning, Ga.

For the third consecutive year, four-time Olympian Rhode was selected as the USA Shooting Female Athlete of the Year. A four-time Olympic medalist, Rhode shot her way to two World Cup medals this year, claiming the silver in San Marino and the bronze in Munich in the Women’s Skeet event. Rhode was also the 2009 National Champion and finished in first place at the 2009 Shotgun Fall Selection Match, earning a spot on the 2010 World Shooting Championship team. Rhode also finished seventh at the 2009 Shotgun World Championships.

Sanderson and Rhode were selected as the overall USAS Athletes of the Year, but USAS also recognizes the Discipline Athletes of the Year, who earned the highest number of points in each discipline.

U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.) was the top male athlete for rifle, while Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.) won the honor for women’s rifle for the fourth year in a row, and USAMU member Josh Richmond (Hillsgrove, Pa.) had the highest number of points for men’s shotgun. Sanderson is also the Male Athlete of the Year for pistol and Rhode is the Female the Athlete of the Year for the shotgun discipline. A female pistol shooter was not chosen this year as there were no female pistol shooters who met the minimum point requirement.

McPhail had an excellent year in the Men’s 50m Prone Rifle event, capturing two bronze medals on the World Cup circuit, as well as the silver medal at the World Cup Final. McPhail also finished in fifth place at the World Cup Changwon and was the 2009 National Champion in Men’s Prone.

Beyerle, a 2008 Olympian, won the 2009 World Cup Final bronze medal in Women’s 50m 3 Position Rifle. She finished fourth at the World Cup in Milan and was the 2009 National Champion. She also claimed second place at the Rifle/Pistol Fall Selection Match.

Richmond captured the gold medal in the Men’s Double Trap event at the 2009 World Cup in Munich, Germany. He took home the bronze at the San Marino World Cup and finished fifth at the World Cup in Minsk. Richmond was also the 2009 National Champion and finished fourth at the Shotgun World Championships. Most recently, Richmond won the 2009 Shotgun Fall Selection Match, claiming a spot on the 2010 World Shooting Championship team.

The overall athletes of the year will be submitted to the U.S. Olympic Committee for consideration for the 2009 USOC SportsMan and SportsWoman of the Year awards, which have been presented annually since 1974 to the top overall male and female athletes within the U.S. Olympic Family.

USA Shooting Announces Keith Sanderson and Kim Rhode as 2009 Athletes of the Year

FORT BENNING, Ga.— -(AmmoLand.com)- Soldiers from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit began to close out yet another successful competitive season by winning multiple medals at a number of matches recently.

Sgt. Daniel Horner got things going on a right note by winning the U.S. Practical Shooting Association Multi-gun National Championship in Boulder City, Nev. for the second time. Horner completely dominated the competition, winning by more than 380 points and establishing himself as the standard bearer in the sport.

“I couldn’t have done it without the support of my team and the Army,” said Horner, a native of Suffolk, Va.. “This is the biggest match of the year for me. I plan to win it again next year.”

Across the Pacific Ocean, several Soldiers from the USAMU showed up at the World Cup Finals in Beijing with something to prove and left with more hardware for the USAMU trophy case.
Starting things off in the Men’s Rifle 50m prone match, Sgt. Michael McPhail earned his first medal in a World Cup event when he won the silver medal. McPhail missed out on the gold by .04 but was still extremely pleased with his performance.

In Men’s Double Trap, Spc. Jeff Holguin earned a bronze medal. Holguin placed fourth in the 2008 Olympics on the same range and was happy that the results were more positive this time around.

“It was great to be back on the Olympic Range of Beijing, and this time walking out with something in my hands,” he said.

Holguin’s USAMU teammate, Sgt. Vincent Hancock, also stood on the winner’s podium in China, winning a silver medal in Men’s skeet. Hancock withstood a driving snowstorm to earn the medal on the same range where he was crowned an Olympic champion in 2008.
Staff Sgt. Ryan Hadden, a two-time World Cup match winner in 2009, placed in fifth place overall in Men’s trap, also overcoming the falling snow to finish an outstanding season on the range.

A number of Soldiers performed extremely well at the 300-meter National Rifle Championships held at Pool Range.

Spc. Joseph Hein won a gold medal in the 3×40 match, outlasting McPhail by one target. McPhail also claimed a silver medal in the Men’s 3×20 match and just beat out Sgt. 1st Class Eric Uptagrafft, who took home the bronze.

In the women’s 3×20, Spc. Sherri Gallagher won the silver medal in the Women’s 3×20 event. Lt. Col. Rhonda Bright earned a bronze medal.

Only a few more events remain on the calendar for 2009, although the Soldiers continue their primary mission of training Soldiers in marksmanship proficiency, as well as attending numerous clinics around the country. The USAMU will soon begin preparations to host the 2010 Fort Benning Rifle and Pistol championships Feb. 3-5 and 10-12.

FORT BENNING, Ga. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Junior shooters from across the country descended on Fort Benning Nov. 6-8 as the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit’s Action Shooting team hosted a junior camp at Krilling Range.

With two national champions, a two-time international sniper champion and a previous attendee at the camp among the instructors, the opportunity to learn from the best was a chance 48 of the top up-and-comers in the growing sport of action shooting couldn’t pass up.

“I needed more training, and my Mom thought if I came here I would meet new friends and have a lot fun,” said nine-year-old Lee Wills, the camp’s youngest participant and a native of Gainesville, Va.. “She was really right.”

The kids were picked to attend the camp after a thorough selection process, said Sgt. 1st Class Aaron Hampton, the camp director. Each junior had to meet certain criteria such as being a ranked U.S. Practical Shooting Association competitor or able to show that you have a good deal of shooting experience.

“This isn’t a beginner’s class,” Hampton said. “By no means is it geared to teach you the fundamentals. Our goal is to help grow the sport.”

FORT BENNING, Ga. — Pvt. Shane Coley, U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, instructs juniors on the proper techniques of reloading the weapon Nov. 7 at Krilling Range. Coley and the USAMU Action Shooting team held a junior camp for 48 juniors Nov. 6-8. Coley himself was an attendee just last year and joined the Army after his positive experience at the camp.

Once the juniors met the criteria, they had to submit an essay on what they wanted to gain from coming to the camp and also what the second amendment means to them. Many submissions included a fondness for the Army and desires to one day join the ranks.

“I wanted it to be something that was personal and heartfelt but also something that they’d have to spend a little bit of time to research and understand,” Hampton said. “If you have nine-year olds who can write you a two-page essay on the second amendment, they probably want to show up. It was designed to be a litmus test on how dedicated they were.”

The attendees had the opportunity to learn from the best. Sgt. Daniel Horner, who recently won the Multi-Gun National championship in Boulder City, Nev., worked with the juniors on drawing and accuracy. Sgt. 1st Class Robby Johnson, a two-time International Sniper Competition champion, gave a block of instruction on the introduction to the rifle. The attendees also learned movement techniques, transitions, and reloads.

“I was here last year and had lots of fun,” said Mark Saffery, a 13-year-old from Jacksonville, Fla. “I’ve been competing for three years now. This camp is the best part of the year. We get to learn something from every AMU mentor. They are so awesome and really great guys.”

Instructing them on reloads was a familiar face. Pvt. Shane Coley, the newest member of the USAMU, attended the camp in its inaugural year last fall. Before attending the camp, he had no plans on joining the Army. That all changed rather quickly.

“It helped me so much when I came here,” Coley remarked, who arrived at the USAMU after completing basic and advanced individual training a mere three weeks ago. “I got to meet a bunch of new people in the sport, but I also had great mentors and great teachers in the Soldiers on the team.

“I really wanted to prove to them that I could be here. After the world championships last year Sgt. 1st Class Hampton came up to me and we talked. And now I’m here. It is a little weird because a lot of these guys are my friends, but I have to set boundaries. I want to teach them and instruct them. This is a great camp and these kids realize how valuable it is.”

This is a tricky time of year for the Action Shooting team to hold the camp. Soldiers compete in their national championships in late October, and the Fort Benning Three-Gun challenge, which they host, is held the first weekend of December. But it’s a no-brainier for Hampton and his Soldiers to continue bringing the kids back to Krilling Range and keep growing the sport that they all cherish.

“I believe in two things: one, if you’re going to do something you need to go ahead and do it and, two, if you got momentum keep it going because it’s hard to get it started again,” he concluded.

Vincent Hancock Captures Silver Medal at ISSF World Cup Event With Beretta DT 10 Shotgun

Carl Junction, Missouri --(AmmoLand.com)- Secure Firearm Products shooting team members Karl Piper, Warren Piper and Tiffany Piper dominated the Cowley Cup, held Sept. 19-20, 2009, at the Whangarei Pistol Club in New Zealand.

Karl Piper of New Zealand claimed High Master winner overall with a score of 1918 and 167X. His daughter, 15-year-old Tiffany Piper, earned Master Grade winner with a score of 1913 and 142X while Karl’s son Warren Piper took second place Master Grade with a score of 1896 and 142X.

Tiffany also become the 2009 New Zealand Open Ladies champion and junior Master Grade 1st place winner while her brother Warren finished 5th overall.

Tiffany and Warren joined the Secure Firearm Products shooting team in 2008 while Karl became a member this year.

Not only is family important to Dave Surgi and his brother, who operate family-owned business Secure Firearm Products, so is passing along their love of the shooting sports.

Team Hornady Shooters Take Top Honors at International Tactical Rifleman’s Championship

ORLANDO, Fla. --(AmmoLand.com)- In less than a year, Eagle Mountain Magnet School’s archery team went from nonexistent to world champion. But doing well in archery competitions is old hat for this rookie team.

The team was formed one month before the Arkansas National Archery in the Schools Program’s state championship in February, where it took second place. The team finished eleventh at the national competition in Louisville, Ky., in May. The world competition, Oct. 9-10 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., was the icing on the cake.

Coach Susan Parker is as new to archery as many of the students she introduced to the sport. She said bows used in the competition are different from standard hunting bows, although some of her students are bowhunters.

The fledgling team practiced weekends, and before and after school. They even practiced through the summer.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission provides instruction and safety training to team coaches and helps them with the grant process to pay for the official bows, targets and arrows. In its first year, the program has grown to include more than 26,180 students in 296 Arkansas schools, and it shows no sign of slowing.

“We have 12 schools waiting in the wings for grant money to get the equipment for next year,” said Curtis Gray, ANASP coordinator for the AGFC. “The program’s growth is just outstanding. And now we already have a world-champion team. I’d like to take credit for the success, but those kids are the ones who deserve the recognition. They really worked hard to achieve this success.”

This year marks Michel’s debut with “Team SIG” and as the new SIG SAUER Manager of Competitive Shooting Activities. As the Team Captain, Michel has won seven titles and one second place throughout the 2009 season.

This year Michel broke the NRA Speed Shoot-Off Event Record with the fastest time in Bianchi Cup history of 1.70 seconds. He also participated in the man-on-man steel shoot-off event with other top shooters at the IPSC tournament, as well as competed in two separate championship tournaments in different states within two days.

Team SIG’s Max Michel Wraps Up 2009 Shooting Tournaments

BOULDER CITY, Nev. —-(AmmoLand.com)- In a back and forth battle, Michael Voigt of Chino, Calif. held off defending national champion Jerry Miculek of Princeton, La. to win the Open title at the 2009 U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) Multi-Gun National Championships held October 22-25 at the Boulder Rifle and Pistol Club in Boulder City, Nevada.

Miculek of Team Smith & Wesson took the early lead winning the first stage but immediately fell behind Team STI’s Voigt on the second stage where Voigt topped all shooters. Miculek regained the lead on the third stage but once again fell to second as Voigt won the fourth stage.

On the fifth stage Miculek retook the lead and this time held on to it through the next two despite Voigt’s winning stage seven. However, Voigt’s win on the seventh set him up to retake the lead on stage eight.

Miculek quickly bounced back taking the lead on stage nine and holding it through the next on the strength of a stage 10 win.

But it was the 11th stage that turned the match in Voigt’s favor when he won the stage claiming all 200 match points. Miculek, who enjoyed a slim 16 point lead upon entering stage 11, walked off more than 80 points behind Voigt having only scored 103 points.

Miculek finished strong by winning the 12th and final stage of the match but it was not enough to overtake Voigt who dropped just five points and remained over 75 points ahead of the 2008 champion with a final score of 2178.2303.

When it was said and done, Miculek and Voigt had exchanged the lead seven times in one of the closest head-to-head match-ups in recent Multi-Gun competition.

“This was one of the most exciting matches in Multi-Gun competition with two true champions battling their way through each and every stage. While Michael enjoyed a comfortable lead on the final stage to claim this year’s championship, I’m sure he’d be the first to tell you that there is no easy path to victory as long as Jerry is standing in the way,” said Dave Thomas, executive director for USPSA.

Rounding out the top five in the Open division match were JoJo Vidanes of Norco, Calif. in third with a score of 2066.6811. Finishing fourth with 2021.1368 was Taran Butler of Simi Valley, Calif. and in fifth was Tony Holmes with a final score of 1808.9131.

The Multi-Gun National Championships drew 135 top shooters from around the country to test their skills in a shooting format that utilizes the rifle, shotgun and pistol.

Voigt Battles Through Miculek to Multi-Gun Open Title

WUXI, China –-(AmmoLand.com)- For the third year in a row, two-time Olympic medalist Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.), claimed the gold medal in the Men’s 50m 3 Position Rifle event at the ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup Final.

Emmons won today’s match and was a fan favorite among the Chinese spectators, as he took home the gold with a total score of 1277.3 points (1177+100.3), climbing from third place by shooting the second highest final score and securing the win with an excellent 10.8 on his last shot. While he was moving up the scoreboard to win the match, the Chinese fans rallied their support for Emmons and cheered for him as he climbed into first place.

“I realized they were cheering for me. That’s awesome. It’s an emotion I cannot describe,” said Emmons after the match. “USA and China are often rivals in these Olympic competitions, but this audience made me feel like I was at home.”

Emmons came back to win the gold today after a disappointing tenth place finish in yesterday’s 50m Prone Rifle event.

“I am thrilled about this victory,” he added. “I changed my sightings after the Prone event, and I was quite confident as I walked into the finals hall today. It has been a great day.”

This is the fifth World Cup Final win for Emmons since 2002.

Today’s leader going into the final, Han Jinseop of Korea, finished in second place behind Emmons, grabbing the silver with 1274.6 points (1180+94.6). Norwegian shooter Ole Magnus Bakken grabbed the bronze with a total score of 1270.0 (1180+90.0).

Eighty-five athletes from around the world gathered in Wuxi, China October 26-28 to compete for a World Cup Final title. These athletes qualified for the 2009 World Cup Final based on individual performances in the ISSF World Cup circuit throughout the year. Competition at the 2009 ISSF World Cup Final for shotgun will begin on October 31 in Beijing, China and will run through November 2.

Matt Emmons Captures World Cup Final Gold in Men’s 3P Shooting Event

Sparta, WI --(AmmoLand.com)- In 2001, during the 6-month planning phase of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) one of the items on our wish list was to attract “Disney” as a partner. We felt if NASP could attract the interest of Disney that would be a sign of the program’s success.

During the winter of 2008 Kevin Stay at Mathews was contacted by a Disney official, Greg Waldron with a question about his hunting bow. Of course no one can talk to Kevin, our NASP Vice-President for more than a few minutes before they will hear about the program. Greg was impressed with NASP®’s popularity and it’s Mission to help student.

A few months later this encounter resulted in a meeting at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports.

During our first planning meeting we agreed to design a NASP range at Disney’s Wilderness Resort, train Disney cast members to present NASP-style archery lessons, and develop a 100 minute archery lesson for resort guests. We also began discussions about establishing a NASP® tournament at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports® complex.

A bit more than a year later we announced, at the 2009 NASP® National tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, that Disney and NASP would join forces to conduct NASP®’s first world tournament. This was only 5 months notice for schools that might like to participate and only weeks remained in most states’ school year to make plans, raise travel money, and keep teams practicing over the summer. NASP® also had to develop an on-line registration system to allow teams to register, select flight times, and pay registration fees. Registration for the tournament opened two days after Labor Day in September and closed on September 23. NASP® offered partial travel grants to teams in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada to help them make the trip.

The first NASP® World Tournament was conducted indoors at the new Josten’s Center on October 9th and 10th at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports® complex. A total of 609 archery students from 18 states and Saskatchewan participated in the 2-day event. The most heavily represented grade levels at the tournament were grades 5th and 6th. There were even 3, 3rd grade students competing, with special written permission from their Principals to “shoot up”. Proving once again that NASP® is an important co-gender activity, 44% of the participants were female.

Many of the student archers, coaches, teachers, and parents reported having a terrific time at this first NASP® World Tournament. Carly Hedden, an 8th grade participant said, “It was an honor to be invited to compete with top Archers around the world. She said that participating in such a hi-profile event and visiting Disney were “…dreams come true for me.” Carly’s mother, Susan commented that, “NASP® Archery teaches discipline and sportsmanship in a positive environment which are principles that I want my child to learn and live by.”

Disney was a terrific host of the event helping to set-up and tear down, providing a facility coordinator, first aid, and ushers throughout the tournament. Of course the first aid station was the least active place in the building because of archery’s terrific safety record! Nearly all the young archers were among the 4,565 students that participated in the 2009 NASP® National Tournament held in May, 2009. Several of the students and their parents including Kevin, Cindy, and Cody Able from Lawrenceburg, KY were very impressed with the quality of the Disney facilities and the “niceness” of the Disney cast members. It was obvious this tournament-inspired trip to Disney World® was a huge hit with many of the students, many of which had never been out-of-state, on an airplane, visited Disney before, and for those who drove over to Daytona Beach, had never seen the ocean. Teacher, Eric Sowers at the Providence School in Nicholasville, KY reported, “Our kids loved the shooting facility and the professionalism. The tournament site had them in awe. You should have seen their faces when they saw the Atlantic Ocean for the first time. They truly had a once in a lifetime experience.” Nathan Parcell of Brandenburg, Kentucky enjoyed meeting archers from around the country he has become acquainted with and to make new archer friends.

As is NASP®’s norm awards were presented to the top three teams in the elementary, middle, and high school divisions. Again, as is NASP®’s standard, every archer used the same bow (without sights, stabilizers, or release aids), the same arrow, and shot 15 arrows at both 10 and 15 meters. Individual awards were presented to 1st-5th placing boys AND girls in 4, 5, and 6th grades and the middle school and high school divisions. The overall boy and girl champions posted identical scores of 293 (out of 300). The young lady World Champion was Kentucky’s Danielle Reddick from Trigg county High School. Two young men achieved identical scores of 293. However, Alabama’s Joshua Clarke was beat out by Michigan’s Steven Schram for overall top male archer in the World, based upon a higher number of “bulls-eyes”. Six young archers were involved in a fast-paced, tie-breaking “shoot-off” immediately preceding the awards ceremony. The 1st placing teams in each division and individual winners are listed below.

More than 300 trophies, plaques, and medals were awarded to the students. Additionally, thanks to the generosity of several NASP® supporters, some winners received bows from Mathews Archery, arrows and repair kits from Easton Technical Products, targets from Morrell Manufacturing, and bow cases from the Genesis Outlet. One of the most hotly contested awards at NASP® tournaments are the “Spirit Awards” presented to one school in each of the three divisions. This award, a resin Bald Eagle, is presented to teams judged by a committee of volunteers for showing terrific enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and school spirit. Teams that win these awards usually dress in special archery “uniforms”, sing, change, and carry their school’s banner. It is always fun to see how the kids “spirit-up” whenever an official-looking NASP® person walks by their team carrying a clipboard! One of most spirited teams wore the new NASP® uniform shirt made by EOTAC. The elementary division was won by Indiana’s Hayden Elementary, their 2nd year to take home the eagle. Kentucky’s Anderson County Middle and Meade County High Schools were spirited, great sports, and colorful enough to also win Spirit Awards.

Nearly forty states and provinces will conduct annual tournaments among their NASP® schools this coming January-April in 2010. While vying for terrific prizes and notoriety among their peers, they also will be competing to see who will be among nearly 6,000 students at the NASP® national tournament scheduled for May 7th & 8th in Louisville, Kentucky. 1st NASP World Archery Tournament is History

Grand Island, NE --(AmmoLand.com)- If seventh heaven is a state of perfect happiness, then Max Michel, world professional shooter and member of Team Hornady, experienced that after winning the Open Division of the United States Practical Shooting Association Area 4 Championship for the seventh time.

Competing in the 2009 Infinity Area 4 Championships, organized by the North Texas Practical Shooters and held at the Double Tap Ranch in Wichita Falls, Texas, Max won his division with a winning score of 1491.0745.

After the match, Max said “my shooting schedule this past year has taken me all over the country where weather conditions and temperatures have varied at times. Max Michel Wins USPSA Area 4 Shooting Championship

SPRINGFIELD, Mass –-(AmmoLand.com)-Smith & Wesson Corp., announced today that Team Smith & Wesson members earned high honors in multiple divisions after competing in consecutive United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) National Championships during the month of September. As part of the Back-to-Back Handgun Nationals sponsored by Smith & Wesson, team members competed and excelled in the USPSA Production, Revolver and Limited-10 Nationals. Leading the way for Team Smith & Wesson was Annette Aysen, who earned the Ladies Revolver National Championship title.

USPSA Production Match

Held at the Desert Sportsmen in Las Vegas Nevada, the USPSA Production match featured 16 unique stages of fire designed to test each competitor’s skill with a handgun. During the four-day match, Team Smith & Wesson members claimed four spots in the Top 16 and earned top honors in four classes. Earning awards for Team Smith & Wesson was Revolver Champion Jerry Miculek who was named High Senior; Phil Strader who placed 3rd Overall; B.J. Norris who placed 8th Overall and 1st in Master Class; Mike Seeklander who placed 11th Overall and 2nd in Master Class and David Olhasso who finished 13th Overall.

In the Women’s Division, Smith & Wesson team members achieved two spots in the Top 5. Team Captain Julie Golob placed an impressive 2nd Lady while fellow teammate Carrie Jamrogowicz earned the 5th Lady spot. Both women competed with the Smith & Wesson M&P9 Pro Series pistol in the event.

Throughout the match, the Smith & Wesson Military & Police (M&P) pistol had a strong showing with 25% of the Top 16 competitors using firearms from the M&P line during the competition. This year’s USPSA Production Nationals marks the first time an M&P pistol has been used by a competitor placing in the Top 3 Overall, an accomplishment delivered by Team Smith & Wesson member Phil Strader.

USPSA Limited-10 Nationals

During the Limited-10 Nationals, which were held immediately after the USPSA Production match, Team Smith & Wesson members once again stood atop the leader board. Team Smith & Wesson put three shooters in the Top 20 with BJ Norris placing 5th Overall and 1st Unclassified; Mike Seeklander earning 8th Overall and 2nd in the Master Class; and Tony Phan claiming the 20th Overall spot. In the Women’s Division, Julie Golob had another strong showing placing 2nd Lady Overall using a Smith & Wesson M&P9 Pro Series pistol while Kay Miculek earned 4th Lady Overall shooting a Smith & Wesson Pro Series 1911.

In the Revolver Division, Smith & Wesson extended its domination when Annette Aysen was named the Ladies Revolver National Champion. Shooting a Smith & Wesson Model 625, Aysen was able to claim her fourth national title for the season and her third consecutive USPSA Ladies Revolver National Title. Three other members of Team Smith & Wesson earned high honors in the Revolver Division with Jerry Miculek, David Olhasso and Elliot Aysen placing 2nd, 3rd and 8th Overall respectively.

Team Smith & Wesson Earns High Honors In USPSA Handgun Nationals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass –-(AmmoLand.com)- Smith & Wesson Corp., announced today that Team Smith & Wesson earned three national titles and posted high scores in each of the five divisions during the 2009 International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) National Championship held at the United States Shooting Academy (USSA) in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Competing in the Enhanced Service Revolver Division, Team Smith & Wesson Shooter Jerry Miculek added yet another national title to his prestigious career while fellow teammate and this year’s Match Director Curt Nichols earned his fourth consecutive national title in the Stock Service Revolver Division. Rounding out the top finishes by Team Smith & Wesson was Mike Seeklander, Chief Operating Officer of USSA, who earned the High Military Veteran award competing in the Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP) Division.

The 2009 Annual IDPA Nationals featured 17 stages of fire with over 350 participants competing for divisional titles. Designed to challenge the speed and accuracy of each shooter, the stages of fire tested each competitor on a variety of defensive shooting skills including drawing from concealment, shooting on the move and engaging a variety of stationary and moving targets. Competing with a Smith & Wesson Model 625, Miculek earned top scores in 14 of the 17 stages to win the national title by over 88 seconds. In the Stock Service Revolver (SSR) Division, Curt Nichols out scored 23 other competitors using a Smith & Wesson Model 67, en route to his fourth consecutive SSR national title. Winner of the High Military Veteran Title, Mike Seeklander, used his M&P9 Pro Series pistol to place 2nd Master and 3rd Overall in the ESP Division.

“Participating in this year’s match both as a competitor and Match Director, certainly brought on some new challenges that I had never experienced,” said Curt Nichols, Team Smith & Wesson member. “The match itself took over three months of preparation as we included more stages, a higher round count per stage and more shooters than ever before. With such an elaborate design, it was a personal challenge to stay mentally focused on my shooting while contending with all of the logistics that go into hosting a match of this proportion.”

During the planning stages, Nichols and his staff worked hard to develop what he portrayed as a ‘shooter’s match.’ The stages of fire were designed to be accuracy intensive and utilized a variety of different props such as the nine different stages of fire that involved shooting around, in and out of stationary vehicles. After the match Nichols received numerous compliments from competitors who portrayed the match as one of the most challenging yet fun IDPA Nationals to date.

After the conclusion of the match, Nichols spoke highly of the USSA facility, dedicated staff of over 70 individuals, plus the Smith & Wesson revolver that allowed him to retain the SSR title.

“A match of this caliber would not have been possible without such a dedicated staff and tremendous facility like the USSA,” added Nichols. “I’m extremely pleased with the outcome. I also have to say that my performance in the match as a competitor would not have been possible without a quality firearm. Never once did I worry about the accuracy or reliability of my Smith & Wesson revolver as this particular platform has allowed me to excel in competitive shooting and has served me dutifully in my 22 years of law enforcement.”

Throughout the three-day event, additional members of Team Smith & Wesson delivered solid performances that placed them in the Top 3 of each of the divisions. In the Custom Defense Pistol Division, David Olhasso placed 2nd in Master Class and 3rd overall using an M&P45 pistol. Carl Junction, Mo. --(AmmoLand.com)- Secure Firearm Products shooting team member Mark Itzstein captured 2nd Place in Open Revolver at the Third Annual ICORE Cup, held Oct. 9-11 in Byram, Missisippi this past weekend.

Itzstein posted a total time score of 141.44 behind Jerry Miculek’s score of 123.81. Last year, Itzstein won 1st Place Open Revolver and Overall 1st Place Winner at the ICORE Cup, hosted by the Mississippi Revolver Association.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas —-(AmmoLand.com)- By just a narrow margin of 26 match points, Jim Bodkin managed to edge out Tony Phan in the Limited-10 division to take the Infinity USPSA Area 4 Championship. This is the second year in a row Bodkin has won the title.

Bodkin started the match behind Phan who took an early lead and held on through five stages, winning two of them. But it was on the fifth stage that Bodkin began to turn things around by winning the stage and gaining 26 points on Phan. On the next stage Bodkin picked up another 21 points and pulled ahead.

Bodkin went on to win two more stages and remain in the lead through the rest of the match despite Phan’s winning three more stages.

“The battle between Jim and Tony was classic USPSA shooting with each keeping the other honest until the final stage,” said Michael Voigt, president of U.S. Practical Shooting Association. “Nothing is a given in this sport and Tony made Jim earn every bit of this year’s championship.”

Rounding out the top five in the Limited-10 division were David Elderton in third with 1347.2359 points and Russ Shaver and Aristotle Bartolome in fourth and fifth posting scores of 1293.7561 and 1171.5474 respectively.

Bodkin Edges Out Phan To Repeat As Area 4 L-10 Pistol Shooting Champ

WICHITA FALLS, Texas —-(AmmoLand.com)- Hot off winning the Open division national title, Max Michel of Team Sig put on a clinic at the Infinity USPSA Area 4 Championships winning nine of the 11 stages and crushing his nearest competitor by 95 points for the win. It is the seventh time Michel has won the Area 4 Open title.

“Max shot an almost perfect match finishing second and 11th on the only two stages he didn’t win,” said Michael Voigt, president of U.S. Practical Shooting Association. “It’s very difficult to be that consistent, especially facing a field with five other Grand Masters and 17 Masters. We congratulate Max on another big win.”

Coming in second behind Michel was Team SVI’s Chris Tilley, the 2008 Open division national champion. Tilley finished with a score of 1395.4182 winning the two stages Michel didn’t.

Rounding out the top five were Clint Upchurch in third shooting 1360.5763, Alex Szakacs in fourth with 1300.4059 and Scott Stockton in fifth posting a final score or 1276.5598.

Michel Follows National Pistol Shooting Title With Area 4 Victory

WICHITA FALLS, Texas —-(AmmoLand.com)- With just two USPSA Area championships left in the season it looked as if Glock’s Dave Sevigny was on track to sweep all eight Production division titles. Then Matt Mink of Team CZ got in the way.

Mink captured the 2009 Infinity USPSA Area 4 Production division title this past weekend at the Double Tap Ranch in Wichita Falls, Texas by posting a final score of 1426.3885 and edging out Sevigny by nearly 11 points.

Sevigny was clearly on a roll entering the match having already won the Area 1, 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8 titles and was by all accounts the odds on favorite as he won four of the first five stages.

But it was on the stage called Red Cell Fever where the match turned in Mink’s favor.

Mink won the stage pocketing all 150 match points while Sevigny finished an uncharacteristic 11th with one miss and one no shoot giving up nearly 30 points and the lead. Mink then picked up another 13 points on the next stage, closing the door on Sevigny who posted two more misses and a procedural.

Sevigny finished the match in second place with 1415.4791 points.

“You can count on two hands, probably just one, the number of shooters that can beat Dave Sevigny, and that includes internationally,” explained Michael Voigt, the USPSA president and himself a top-ranked shooter. “Matt Mink is one of those elite few and his win this weekend in Texas proves that no shooter can claim ownership of the Production division.”

Rounding out the top five were Kale Garretson in third with 1335.4841 points, Team Smith & Wesson member Gordon Carrell in fourth with 1301.2126 and Yong Lee in fifth with 1298.1705.

The match, which was sponsored by Texas-based firearms maker Infinity Firearms, drew more than 235 top shooters from around the country.

Miguez, who holds the rank of Grand Master, won six of the 11 stages and posted a final score of 1405.2347 to take the title. Grand Master is the highest skill level in the sport of Practical Shooting that a competitor can attain.

“Blake continues to be a force in the Limited division where he is counted among the very best shooters. His strong performance at this year’s Infinity Area 4 match shows he’s not about to let that change,” explained Michael Voigt, USPSA president.

Just over 31 points behind Miguez was Team Smith & Wesson member, and fellow Grand Master, Phil Strader. Winning two stages and posting a final score of 1374.1808, Strader finished in second place.

Rounding out the top five were Mike Burrell, also a Grand Master, in third winning three stages and shooting a final score of 1331.2347. Fourth place went to another Grand Master, David Weers, who shot 1330.3563 while fifth went to Scott Reese, a Master level shooter, with a score of 1253.6121.

Miguez Repeats At Infinity Area 4 Limited Shooting Championships

Notable performances also were turned in by Shane Richardson of Bethune, Colorado; Rachel Hopkins of Pattonsburg, Missouri; Stephanie Sandler of New Ringgold, Pennsylvania; and Bronson Castleberry, manager of the Remington Gun Club in Lonoke, Arkansas, won Class AA in the Doubles Class Championship.

Following just behind Glenn was his fellow team mate Eric Fuson who took First Place in Custom Defense Pistol Master Class with a total score of 285.98 dropping only 63 points.

In this very challenging match with the accumulated dropped points in the tens of thousands, it is a tribute to their abilities and to their equipment.

Wilson Combat Team Shooters Take Top Honors in Custom Defense Pistol at IDPA National Championship

First Fidelity Reserve to Sponsor 2010 NRA Bianchi Cup

Kansas --(AmmoLand.com)-The KSRA Mid Range individual match was held on Saturday Sept. 12. The team match was held on Sunday the 13th. Fourteen shooters showed up for the individual match. The match is made up of four stages. Each one is 2 sighter shots and 20 shots for record at 600 yards for 200 possible points. The first two stages are fired with scope sights and the second two are fired with iron sights.

After an hour and a half rain delay we got started. After the two scoped events three people had 400 points. Three others had 399. The scores stayed close all day.

Awards were given for service rifle and match rifle classes.

• The service rifle was won by Andrew Timmons with 727-9x.
• In the match rifle class first Sharpshooter was Andrew Borkon with748-20x.
• First master went to Kelly Snider with 781-31x.
• Second High Master went to Dennis Selfridge with 797-46x
• First High Master went to Steve McGee with 799-55x
• Match winner was John Myer with 800-53x. To set a range record

A special recognition and congratulations goes to Shirley McGee. She shot a 200-18x in one scoped stage to set a range record an also a national record.

Sundays team match started with near perfect weather. The match is fired with two man teams. Each member shoots one twenty shot sting with scoped sights and one with iron sights. Coaching each other is allowed. Five teams entered.

Second placed was taken by Brad Mosiman and Greg Krebaum with a score of 796-37x

First place was taken by Steve and Shirley McGee with 798-53x

To help understand the accomplishments of these people you should know all shots are fired from the prone position with a sling as the only other support. The 600 yard target x ring is six inches in diameter. The 10 ring is 12 inches across. Throw in wind, haze, sun, pulse and normal body wiggles it gets interesting.

Kansas State Rifle Association Mid Range Individual Shooting Match

Kansas --(AmmoLand.com)-Wow! What a summer it has been! In June, I competed in the USA Shooting National Championships, held annually at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia. After a solid smallbore shooting match, I walked away from the Women’s Prone Championship as the Junior Women’s Prone Champion. I also finished as 3rd Junior in the 3-Position Women’s Championship.

Then, in July, Dad and I traveled to the NRA National Championships, held annually at Camp Perry near Port Clinton, Ohio. One of the many traditions at Perry is the tricky weather. During the 3-Position phase, it rained and was rather windy. Although this posed a challenge for the competitors, the match still went on without delay.

After the first day of competition, which was shot with metallic sights only, I was on top of the junior and women categories. The weather for day two was better, but still tricky for the any sights match. I hung in there and fired a solid score, keeping me near the top of the leader boards. The final results were posted and there was my name, at the top of the junior category for the entire 3-Position championship.

The next morning was the firing of the team matches. Because I was not there with a team, I slept in a little bit, then got up and ready and went to play “cheerleader” for my buddies on the United States Army Marksmanship Unit Team. That evening was the awards ceremony. We got all dressed up and walked over to the post auditorium.

Not long after the start of the ceremony, and the presentation of team awards, the lights went out. After a bit of scurrying around and flashlight searching for the problem, the executive decision was made to open the doors and carry on. So, the side doors were opened and the audience was lit up, even though the stage was still dark. During that ceremony, I was called to stage to receive numerous awards, to include Junior Champion for 3-Position Smallbore Rifle. I was also awarded a Walther KK300, presented to me on stage by Charles Pearson, President of Champion’s Choice, and Hichem Hanafi, Export Manager for Walther.

The next morning, the prone phase began with the metallic sight championship. Although the sky looked like it could pour rain on us any minute, it held off. The wind was tricky at times, but manageable. I held in there with decent scores, enough that is to qualify for the Randle Team Match.

The Randle Match is an International Team Match that members must qualify for during the metallic sight championship at Camp Perry. The top ten ladies, plus two alternates are selected for the team. Firing happens at 7:00 am the morning of the team matches during the prone phase.

Following prone team day, was the any sight championship. The weather was very favorable and almost perfect for shooting on the first day. I fired a 1200/1200, my first time ever shooting a perfect score in an outdoor prone match. I guess if there is a good time to do it, Camp Perry is the time and place. The weather got a little more tricky the second day, but I fired a solid score, enough once again to hang in there.

Although I didn’t win any overall prone championships, I didn’t end up too shabby. I won my Expert-Junior class/category and I still got to go onstage to receive my bracelet and charm for making the Randle Team.

Overall, Camp Perry was very successful this year and therefore was a lot of fun. It’s always MORE fun to shoot, when you are shooting well!

As most everyone knows, I will be attending Texas Christian University this fall and will be competing for TCU on their Women’s Rifle Team. Although I will be busy at school, I hope to get the chance to continue writing to the shooting publications in Kansas to keep everyone back at home updated. And to answer everyone’s first question about TCU, yes, we are the Horned Frogs and proud of it!

Start making your plans for Camp Perry and USASNC 2010 now! I hope to see you all when I am home and visit the range, but until then, keep shooting!

Smyrna, GA - -(AmmoLand.com)- The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) Nationals were held at the United States Shooting Academy in Tulsa, Oklahoma from September 23-26, 2009. Team GLOCK Shooting Squad Captain Dave Sevigny won his 8th IDPA National Championship in the Stock Service Pistol (SSP) division along with the High Gun Industry category while teammate Randi Rogers won her 3rd title in the High Lady category.

The IDPA Nationals was host to more than 350 competitors during the four day annual defensive pistol shooting tournament. Participants fired a minimum of 241 rounds through seventeen courses of fire which featured moving targets, a shoot house, low-light scenarios requiring use of a hand held flashlight, shooting from cover and prone positions including from in and around motor vehicles, with target distances ranging from three to ninety feet.

Team GLOCK Captain Dave Sevigny dominated the competition with an overall best time of 222.56 seconds and won fourteen stages in the Stock division with a GLOCK 34 in 9×19. Stock division runner-up Gordon Carrell and 3rd place finisher Phil Strader, scored 260.46 seconds and 264.01 seconds respectively with S&W-M&P pistols. Sevigny has now won the prestigious IDPA National championship eight times in ten appearances and finished in the top three overall in each contest; the only competitor to accomplish such a feat. “After beginning in the GLOCK Sport Shooting Foundation I joined IDPA so there’s some tradition here. It was a good competition and I was happy to compete at the IDPA Nationals once again,” said Sevigny.

Randi Rogers of Team GLOCK won the High Lady title in 7th place Stock/Master class with a final score of 309.42 seconds with a GLOCK 34 in 9×19. “The IDPA Nationals was a pleasant end to the 2009 shooting season. I look forward to take what I have learned throughout the season, perfect my craft during the off season and come back even stronger next year,” said Rogers. ”A favorite stage of mine was Stage 8 named “El-Prez At The Movies.” This was a 12- round, three target, Limited Vickers stage. The course of fire required a start with only six rounds in the pistol, then to draw and engage each target twice, complete a mandatory reload and re-engage each target twice with no make up shots. I shot the stage in 9.40 seconds with two points down for a total time of 10.40 seconds. This time placed me 5th out of 31 Master-class Stock division competitors on this stage,” added Rogers. Twenty-eight women, roughly 8% of the field of competitors, were entered in the ladies category in 2009. Three-time Ladies IDPA National champion Julie Goloski-Golob finished in 14th place Stock/Master class and was the High Lady runner-up at 327.78 seconds with an S&W M&P.`

Another notable finish came from Enhanced Service Pistol division champion and High Law Enforcement winner, Robert G. Vogel, who used a GLOCK 34 in 9×19 with a score of 230.47 seconds to capture his 3rd IDPA National championship.

Team GLOCK- Sevigny and Rogers Repeat as IDPA National Champions

LINCOLN, Neb. – -(AmmoLand.com)-Mariah Kenney of Beemer posted a score of 37X40 to win the annual Pressey High School Silhouette Championship on Saturday at Pressey Wildlife Management Area south of Broken Bow.

“We enjoyed great weather, great scores and a wonderful group of young shooters, families, coaches, and spectators,” said Jeff Rawlinson, assistant administrator for the Information and Education Division of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Metallic silhouette shooters compete in the 40-round .22 rimfire match. Competitors shoot at metal targets from 66 yards to 109 yards, firing 10 rounds each at four ranges. Shooters may use a .22 rimfire sporter with iron sights, a scope-sighted rimfire or a .22 rimfire target rifle.

“All shooters have been through the Nebraska Hunter Education course, and the events put on by Match Director Matt Haumont of Broken Bow and volunteers and coaches is a tribute to the responsibility and sportsmanship of the young boys and girls,” Rawlinson said. “The shooting sports offer fun, excitement and challenge to all who participate.”

Kenney Wins Silhouette Shooting Championship

Fairfax, Va. --(AmmoLand.com)- Captain Philip Hemphill of the Mississippi Highway Patrol has won first place in the NRA’s 47th annual National Police Shooting Championships (NPSC) Shooting Range Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Hemphill’s score of 2989-215x beat out nearly 400 other law enforcement competitors, making the Captain a record-setting 10-time champion of the National Police Shooting Championships.

Mississippi’s Philip Hemphill Sweeps NRA’s National Police Shooting Championships

Returning champion Robert Vadasz, a senior agent with the U.S. Border Patrol based in Tampa, Florida, is up against nine-time champion Captain Philip Hemphill, with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The competition is fierce.

Florida’s Robert Vadasz Challenges Mississippi’s Philip Hemphill At NRA’s National Police Shooting Championships

FORT BENNING, Ga. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Soldiers from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit shot their way onto the medal stand today at the 2009 International Rifle and Pistol Fall Selection “Champion of Champions” matches at Pool International Shooting Complex.

Sgt. 1st Class Eric Uptagrafft won first place in the Men’s Rifle 50-meter prone event and was followed by Spc. Joseph Hein, USAMU. Uptagrafft scored a perfect 600 to advance to the final round and outlasted his USAMU teammate. Former USAMU Soldier Steve Goff rounded out the top three.

In the Men’s 50-meter free pistol match, three 2008 Olympians battled for first place. Brian Beaman came out on top, defeating Sgt. 1st Class Daryl Szarenski of the USAMU, and Jason Turner.

The competition continues with Men’s and Women’s Air Pistol, and Men’s and Women’s 3×20 and 3×40 rifle events on Thursday and Friday. Shooters are attempting to qualify for spots on the national team to compete in the 2010 World Championships as well as multiple World Cup events in 2010. The event runs through Oct. 1st.

SMYRNA, GEORGIA --(AmmoLand.com)- Dave Sevigny, Jessie Abbate and Randi Rogers of Team GLOCK Shooting Squad will attend the GSSF GLOCK Annual Shoot to offer shooting advice and perform demonstrations in Covington, GA on September 26-27.

The event will mark the 16th year of GSSF’s largest and most prestigious event of the season. Along with the regularly scheduled competition, plenty of contests and side events will be available. Spectators are welcome and participation is encouraged.

This invitational event features a variety of shooting tests using knock-down steel targets. Only match winners in the Master Stock division will be invited to compete. More than $6K in cash and prizes are to be awarded to the winners in the top four positions.

The catch is no competitor will know which GLOCK pistols, supplied by the GSSF staff, will be used until match day.

Team GLOCK and R. Lee Ermey at GLOCK Annual Shoot XVI

Smyrna, GA --(AmmoLand.com)- Dave Sevigny, Jessie Abbate and Randi Rogers of the Team GLOCK Shooting Squad won Limited-10, Limited and Production titles at the USPSA Back to Back Nationals held September 12-19, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The competition featured 16 stages in each of the Open/Production and Limited/Limited-10/Revolver matches.

At the Production Nationals, 12 women in the 139 competitor field battled for the High Lady title. Jessie Abbate won the Production title by finishing 37th overall and 3rd A-class at 75.41%. Randi Rogers finished 3rd Lady, 72nd overall and 9th B-class at 66.89%. Both Abbate and Rogers used a GLOCK 34 in 9mm. During the competition, Jessie Abbate won 11 of 16 stages in the ladies category and shot clean without a single procedural, miss or no-shoot penalty target. Her closest competitor was runner-up Julie Goloski-Golob of S&W who was defeated by 115 match points with her M&P pistol.

Abbate said, “I fought hard for the Production match, knowing that my team mate Randi Rogers, and also Julie Goloski-Golob would be fighting hard as well. It was a tough match with a lot of noshoots, partials, and plenty of places to make mistakes, so I knew that I would have to be consistent and just keep pushing forward every day.”

Randi Rogers commented on one of her favorite stages, named “Table Choices” saying, “I thought this stage was interesting because of the movement. Moving backward can be challenging because it is important to remember to keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Overall I shot 26th out of 138 competitors on this stage with a time of 9.05 seconds and 54 out of 60 points. Shooting the USPSA Production/Open Nationals was a great learning experience for me this year. I look forward to taking the lessons I learned and building on them as I start preparing for next year’s shooting season.”

For the overall title, Team GLOCK Captain Dave Sevigny finished 2nd in a strong Production division field. Of the 138 competitors in the Production Nationals, 41 held the rank of Master and Grandmaster. Sevigny spoke highly of Ohio police officer Bob Vogel for winning the Production National championship.

“Vogel was so accurate here. The match was loaded with partial targets blocking out most of the A-zones. Someone could score 6 points on a target to someone else’s 10 and that can hurt you bad in the standings. Bob found a way to score well on nearly every stage so congrats to him on winning his second USPSA Production title.”

Both Vogel and Sevigny use GLOCK 34 pistols in Production division. GLOCK continues to lead as the #1 choice among competitors and winning performances. Competitors using GLOCK have won seven out the nine championships since USPSA introduced Production division in 2001.

Sevigny, who described his 2009 Production National match performance as “uncharacteristically erratic,” repeated last season’s rebound by winning the 2009 Limited-10 National championship using a GLOCK 35. Fifteen talented Master and Grandmasters competed among the 86 person Limited-10 field. Sevigny finished in the top 6 in all of the 15 stages, including four overall stage wins. Bob Vogel, shooting a GLOCK 24, improved his 2008 Limited-10 Nationals 7th place finish at 93.78% by placing 2nd at 99.97%.

Sevigny said, “It took a lot to overcome the point deficit I was up against with only two stages and 225 points to go. I stayed positive, worked hard and the finals worked to my favor this time.”

Sevigny is now a 9-time USPSA National champion having won the most overall Production and Limited-10 division titles with five and three respectively, and one in Limited division. Sevigny is also the only person in USPSA to finish each Production and Limited-10 Nationals competed in at 95% or better.

Randi Rogers came back from her Production defeat to claim the Limited-10 Ladies title over nine other women finishing in 32nd place at 70.91%.

“While shooting back to back nationals the challenge is to keep a strong mental game throughout both matches. After shooting the first match it was a struggle for me to let go of the events of the previous experience and concentrate on the new match but I felt confident in my shooting and was able to turn that into a National Championship,” said Rogers. Rogers used a G35 for her most recent title.

Using an S&J Custom GLOCK 24 in the Limited division, Jessie Abbate repeated as ladies national champion with a 50th place finish, 20th Master at 77.04%. Abbate defeated Lisa Munson, the only other Master class ranked woman in USPSA, by 115 match points and won 7 of 15 stages in the ladies category.

“Having shot a clean match in Production, it gave me the confidence and drive I needed to continue on for the Limited match. Shooting two Nationals back to back is very draining, since we all strive to shoot perfect every stage. But I knew what I needed to do to be able to be successful for the second match,” said Abbate.

The 2009 Ladies Limited title marks Abbate’s fifth USPSA National pistol championship and second year in a row she won Back to Back titles.

Team GLOCK Shines at the USPSA Nationals

FORT BENNING, Ga. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Five Soldiers from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit earned berths on the 2010 U.S. World Championship team as well as spots in three 2010 World Cup events after their performances at the 2009 Fall Selection match in Kerrville, Texas.

The Women’s Trap event kicked things off and Sgt. 1st Class Theresa DeWitt became the first Soldier from the USAMU to earn a spot on the 2010 U.S. team that will travel to Munich, Germany next summer. DeWitt, a 1996 Olympian, placed first in the competition with a score of 448.

2009 World and National Champion Spc. Vincent Hancock kept his hot streak going as he won the Men’s Skeet event with a score of 515 and will defend his crown in Munich. Hancock, the 2008 Olympic Champion in this event, broke two national records in Kerrville after missing only two targets during the entire qualifying round and three targets overall. His teammate, Sgt. 1st Class Shawn Dulohery, will travel with Hancock after placing third with a score of 506 and making the U.S. team.

Capping off a good week for the USAMU were teammates Staff Sgt. Josh Richmond and Spc. Jeff Holguin in Men’s Double Trap, finishing first and second with scores of 627 and 621, respectively. Richmond experienced success in Munich in 2009, winning a World Cup event there, and will be eager to return in 2010. Holguin won a silver medal at the 2009 World Championships and will be looking to move up a step on the awardees pedestal in 2010.

USAMU Soldiers Qualify for 2010 Trapshooting World Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Ted Puente of Milwaukee, Wis. came out on top in the Limited pistol championship at the Smith & Wesson 2009 U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) National Handgun Championships.

In 2008 Puente finished third behind Todd Jarrett and national champion Travis Tomasie. But this year he outpaced the defending champ by 26.3186 points and took the title with a final score of 1363.2541

Tomasie, a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, finished second with a score of 1336.9355. Emanuel “Manny” Bragg claimed third with a score of 1334.9071, just 28.347 points behind Puente.

Rounding out the top five were USPSA President and Team STI member Michael Voigt of Chino, Calif. with a score of 1319.6744 and Jarrett, a Team Para USA shooter from Hopewell, Va., in fifth with 1285.2507.

Ted Puente Wins Limited Shooting Title At S&W Handgun Nationals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Jessie Abbate makes winning national titles look routine. That’s because for the second year in a row Abbate has won back-to-back national titles at the Smith & Wesson 2009 U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) National Handgun Championships.

This year Abbate claimed both the Production and Limited division women’s titles. In 2008 she was crowned the Limited and Limited-10 champion.

In the Production division match, Abbate took top honors among the lady shooters posting a final score of 1097.9378 outpacing runner-up and team Smith & Wesson member Julie Goloski-Golob by more than 111 points. Abbate’s score was also good enough to finish 37th overall among all shooters.

Golob, who resides in Glasgow, Mont., secured second place with a final score of 986.7540. In third was another Team Glock member, Randi Rogers of Durango, Colo. who shot 973.9135. Rounding out the top five were Dianna Liedorff of Sperry, Okla. in fourth with 851.0833 and Carrie Jamrogowicz of Missoula, Mont. in fifth with a final score of 799.0553.

In the Limited division where Abbate holds the rank of Master, the second highest skill level in the sport of Practical Shooting, she again put on an impressive display shooting a score of 1050.2892 and finishing over 114 points ahead of Lisa Munson of Marysville, Wash. who came in second with 935.3943. Munson shoots for Team SVI and also holds the rank of Master.

Tasha Hanish of Cave Creek, Ariz. took third finishing just behind Munson with a score of 933.3767. Carina Randolph of Richardson, Texas finished fourth shooting 923.4845 and in fifth place was Lily Chung of San Jose, Calif. with 768.0001.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Robert Vogel of Wapakoneta, Ohio has won the Production division title for the second year in a row at the Smith & Wesson 2009 U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) National Handgun Championships.

With a final score of 1455.9116, the 27 year old Vogel was able to again hold off Team Glock member and past national champion Dave Sevigny of Smyrna Ga. by a safe margin of over 64 points. In 2008 only 4 points separated the two shooters who now dominate this division.

Rounding out the top five were Phil Strader of Owasso, Okla. in third and just over 82 points out of first. Matthew Mink of Conway, Ark., finished in fourth and over 92 points behind and Robbie Leatham of Mesa, Ariz. took fifth, 108 point off the lead.

In the Limited-10 match, Vogel nearly defeated Sevigny again but fell to second on the last stage where a no-shoot left him just 0.481 points out of first.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Just over 11 points separated the top three shooters in the battle for the coveted Open title at the Smith & Wesson 2009 U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) National Handgun Championships but it was Max Michel who took home the crown.

Heading into the final stages it was clear that, barring the wheels coming off, the title would fall to one of three shooters; Covington, Louisiana’s Michel, K.C. Eusebio of Diamond Bar, Calif. or J.J. Racaza of New Milford, N.J.

In the end it was Michel, a past USPSA national champion, who won four of the 16 stages before walking off the range and stepping into the winner’s circle.

“Max is one of the top shooters in the sport and a threat to win any match he enters,” observed Michael Voigt, USPSA president. “He faced intense competition this year from both K.C. and J.J. but was able to pull out the win; a true sign of a champion.”

Finishing second behind Michel was Team Limcat’s Eusebio shooting 1403.1500 but winning only one stage. Racaza, also a Team Limcat shooter, finished third winning seven stages and posting a final score of 1398.4525.

Rounding out the top five were Shannon Smith of Tampa, Fla. in fourth with 1358.9713 and Saul Kirsch of the Netherlands with a final score of 1277.3862 to take fifth.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — -(AmmoLand.com)- Glock’s Dave Sevigny made it two in a row as he again took the Limited-10 national title at the Smith & Wesson 2009 U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) National Handgun Championships.

Sevigny of Smyrna, Ga. held off Robert Vogel by just 0.481 points, shooting a final score of 1397.1343 and never finishing lower than 6th on any of the 15 stages to take the title. Earlier in the Production division championship it was Vogel who came out on top.

“The battle between Dave and Bob is one of the hottest match-ups in the sport right now. Each has tremendous natural ability and immense skill, and either can win but this time it was Dave whose determination won out,” explained Michael Voigt, USPSA president.

Vogel, a fulltime police officer from Wapakoneta, Ohio, finished with a final score of 1396.6533 for second place. In third was Springfield Armory’s Robbie Leatham of Mesa, Ariz. shooting 1305.1814.

Rounding out the top five were Max Michel of Covington, La. in fourth with 1280.6242 and Team Smith & Wesson’s BJ Norris of Tyler, Texas with 1277.3862 in fifth.
