Thibodaux, LA --(AmmoLand.com)- WHAT: ICORE’s 2010 Southern Regional Revolver Championship sponsored by Smith & Wesson will host top wheelgun shooters from around the region and across the country.

Upwards of 50 shooters, including several Masters, the highest skill level in the sport, are expected to attend. This is the first of six regional revolver competitions sponsored by firearms maker Smith & Wesson.

International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts (ICORE) – an organization dedicated to promoting international revolver competition.

Shooters will negotiate 10 stages putting an estimated 14,000 rounds down range as they compete for the regional title in ICORE’s Open, Limited and Retro divisions. Additionally honors will be awarded in the categories of High Lady, Senior, Super Senior and Junior.

The 2010 Southern Regional Revolver Championship is expected to draw shooters from throughout Louisiana as well as Arkansas, California, Michigan, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Canada. Representatives of Team Smith & Wesson, Annette and Elliot Aysen (La.), Jerry Miculek (La.) and Tony Phan (Texas) will also be competing.

Thibodaux Range Hosts Region’s Best Revolver Shooters

FAIRFAX, VA –-(AmmoLand.com)- The 2010 West Virginia NRA Disabled Shooting Sectional will take place at the West Virginia University Rifle Range in Morgantown on Friday, March 19.

The two-day event, co-sponsored by West Virginia Paralyzed Veterans of America and PVA’s Sports Director Roger Sack, will begin with adaptive shooting clinics in the morning followed by competitive shooting relays in the afternoon.

“We are very pleased to include West Virginia in the 2010 NRA National Disabled Indoor Sectional Championships,” said Disabled Shooting Manager Vanessa Ross. “West Virginia has a long, proud history of competitive shooting. These matches should be a showcase for the great shooting skills we’ve come to expect from the Mountain State.”

Those entering the West Virginia Sectional can compete in international air pistol on Friday the 19th as well as precision 3-position air rifle and International air rifle on Saturday the 20th. Match champions will receive an invitation to Colorado Springs, Colorado for Paralympic training at the Olympic Training Center.

“We are very fortunate to have use of the West Virginia University’s facilities,” said PVA Sports Director Roger Sack. “We had a great turnout for the 2009 Sectional Matches and are looking forward to this year’s championship with greater anticipation.”

Disabled Shooting Sectionals are open to those with disabilities in three separate classes: those who are visually impaired, those with measurable or visible permanent disability in their upper limbs, and those with sufficient upper limb strength to fire a gun without assistance. Although match officials will provide firearms for both clinics and matches, competitors are welcome to bring their own guns.

2010 NCAA Rifle Championships – Live Results

National Archery in the Schools Program

PERRY, Ga. – -(AmmoLand.com)- While Woodlawn Elementary School (Chatsworth, Ga.) may have captured the highest overall score at the 4th Annual National Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament on Feb. 12 at the Perry Fairgrounds and Agricenter, all of those who participated showed exceptional skill.

The tournament, coordinated by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division, is an annual event open to all state schools enrolled in the National Archery in the Schools Program.

Woodlawn’s score of 3,145 also won the elementary division and qualified them for an automatic berth to the NASP National Tournament scheduled for May 7-8 in Louisville, Ky. Nearly 6,000 student archers are expected to compete at the national level, making the competition the largest archery tournament in the world.

Morgan County Middle School (Madison) won the middle school division with a 2,852 score and Bishop Hall Charter School (Thomasville) won the high school division with a score of 2,981. Those three schools, along with nine others in the state, qualify to join schools from across the country to vie for scholarship money and prizes at the national tournament.

Dodge County Middle School’s Joshua Peterson won a $1,000 college scholarship by posting the highest overall individual male score with a 286 (out of 300). Woodlawn Elementary’s Morgan Ray won top individual female honors and a $1,000 scholarship with her score of 277.

? Elementary School – Female: Morgan Ray (Woodlawn Elementary) won with a score of 277.

? Middle School – Male: Joshua Peterson (Dodge County Middle) won with a score of 286.

? Middle School – Female: Shelby Carter (Marion County Middle) won with a score of 251.

? High School – Male: Josh Broxton (Miller County High) won with a score of 280.

? High School – Female: Ariel Beheeler (Bishop Hall High) won with a score of 258.

Other schools which qualified for NASP Nationals based on their score were: Bay Creek Elementary (Loganville), Youth Elementary (Loganville), Lake Park Elementary (Albany), Lee County Elementary (Leesburg), Funston Elementary (Funston), Dodge County Middle (Eastman), East Laurens Middle School (East Dublin), Marion County Middle School (Buena Vista) and Miller County High School (Colquitt).

More than 450 archers throughout the state participated in the annual state tournament. Archers shot three rounds of five arrows each from 10 and 15 meters. Teams of 16-24 students from each school competed in three separate divisions: elementary (4th-6th grade), middle (7th-8th grade) and high (9th-12th grade).

NASP is an in-school archery curriculum that meets all education department standards. Only schools that are certified in NASP through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are qualified to compete in the State Tournament. Schools in nearly 70 counties in Georgia are NASP certified.

Research has shown that the program, administered through a minimum two-week course during the school year, improves class attendance and behavior. Georgia Archery Students Aim High At 4Th Annual NASP State Tournament

Acapulco, Mexico --(AmmoLand.com)- Kim Rhode took an important first step towards her quest to set an all time record for individual American Olympic athletes by winning the initial International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup competition in Acapulco, Mexico.

The four-time Olympic medalist Rhode, 30, started the final round in the lead with 72 hits after the qualifications, tied with Italy’s Diana Bacosi. In the final round, Rhode did not miss a single target while Bacosi missed three allowing Yu Xiumin to claim the silver medal with another perfect final round.

Rhode’s final perfect score gave her a combined total of 97 targets, one better than the Chinese silver medalist who finished with a 96. Amber English also shot a combined score of 96.

“It hasn’t been easy. My shotgun got stolen a couple of months ago. I got a new one, but of course it took me time to get used to it,” said Rhode, after the award ceremony.

“It’s great to be on the highest step of the podium today, these international competitions are really important now, on the path leading to the 2012 Olympic Games.”

Xiumin tied the second American finalist Amber English who was the early leader in the World Cup and edged her in the shoot off for the silver medal. Yu, a 2006 Asian Champion, had won her last ISSF World Cup medal in 2007 in Maribor.

Amber English secured the Bronze medal, joining her teammate Rhode on the podium. The 20-year-old shooter had never won an ISSF World Cup medal before.

SMYRNA, Georgia --(AmmoLand.com)- The Georgia State Steel Challenge was held March 5-6 at Griffin Gun Club where Team GLOCK added to their list of 2010 titles.

The eight stage steel challenge tournament required a minimum of 195 rounds. 2010 marks the 5th year of the Georgia state level tournament. A total of 108 entries were tallied among the six divisions of competition.

Team Captain Dave Sevigny won the Limited division with a GLOCK 34 and finished second place in the Open division. Sevigny also won the Steel Master title for the best aggregate total which combines scores from three divisions.

“Griffin recently expanded their range space to accommodate an eight stage tournament. The state match provides an opportunity to fire the same steel challenge courses of fire at the National and World level events. It’s helpful to our team to have Griffin nearby,” said Sevigny.

Reigning ladies steel challenge National and World champion Jessie Abbate finished in second place in the Limited division with a GLOCK 17L and third place in the Open division.

“Being two weeks out from the Steel Nationals, I feel good about the scores I shot this weekend. I still have a couple of weeks to train, and prepare for the Nationals, so I will make sure that everything s fine tuned and ready to race,” said Abbate.

Randi Rogers finished in second place Production division with a GLOCK 34 and seventh place in the Open division. Rogers adds, ”It was a pleasure to shoot the Georgia State Steel Challenge in my new home state of Georgia. I enjoy shooting steel because I believe that it is the most difficult style of shooting. Everyone is challenged to shoot as fast as they can while still being accurate. This match was great practice for the upcoming US Steel Nationals. I will continue to practice and improve before I leave for Florida in a couple of weeks.”

Team GLOCK Shooting Squad members Sevigny, Abbate and Rogers all fired a GLOCK 17 by S&J Customs in the Open division.

GLOCK was the Georgia Steel Challenge major sponsor for the fifth year in a row and was the #1 pistol used in the tournament. 15 year-old Junior title winner Cody Tucker used a GLOCK 34 and 16 year-old Junior runner-up Tierani Hendrix used a GLOCK 17. Both juniors are Georgia residents and regulars at the Griffin steel matches. All of the Team GLOCK members are supportive of the juniors in shooting sports and mentor several young competitors. Team Captain Dave Sevigny adds, “Shooting sports force you to be disciplined and to set goals. Cody and Tierani are both exceptional role models to others in their age bracket.”

The shoot will be at 600 yards and on the pop-up targets. We will have 2 classes shooting, one will be shooting 50 BMG cal rifles and the other will be any other rifle class, this will encompass Highpower match and service rifle, sniper rifle, and F-class T/R.

The course of fire will be unlimited sighters and then 5 shots for record for groups and scores, three times.

Membership in NCSA is required and is $35 a year, this is needed for insurance purposes. Sign-up can be done online or at Camp Blanding on Friday up until 3pm.

Max Michel Wins 2010 Florida Open Pistol Tournament

Upton, WY --(AmmoLand.com)- Of all high school state championships – football, golf, soccer, speech/debate, track and field, etc. – none are more “Wyoming” than the state hunting championships.

The Youth Hunter Education Challenge, as its officially called, will be held May 8 in Upton and young hunters do not need to qualify in a regional or district tournament to compete. All Wyoming and South Dakota youth 18 and under who have passed hunter education are eligible to showcase their hunting skills and probably learn a little.

The challenge tests youngsters in sporting clays style trap shooting, .22, muzzleloader and archery marksmanship, wildlife identification, orienteering and hunter safety judgments.

“The challenge is designed to be a fun event for all participants – not just the winners,” said Jim Dawson, the Game and Fish’s hunter education coordinator.

This is the third year the challenge has been hosted by the Upton Gun Club and officially sanctioned by the National Rifle Association. Winners in both age categories – 15-18 and 14 and under – are eligible to advance to the international competition to be held July 26-30 at a top-notch shooting complex near Mansfield, Pa.

In addition to the department and the gun club, the challenge is sponsored by the Wyoming Friends of the NRA and a variety of Wyoming businesses. All participants receive a prize for competing.

In the spirit of interstate cooperation, South Dakota young hunters can also participate in this challenge for the right to represent their state at the international competition.

“Because Upton is close to the border, we’re teaming up with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks and holding their challenge at the same time,” Dawson said.

He adds that although the youngsters from both states will take part in the same tests, they will not be competing against each other. Winners will be crowned from both states.

To participate, youngsters need to submit copies of their hunter education card, birth certificate, photo and pay a $10 entry fee. Entry forms are available at the Game and Fish Web site and offices and must be submitted by April 30.

Wyoming State Hunting Championships May 8 in Upton

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --(AmmoLand.com)- Smith & Wesson Corp., hosted the 3rd Annual International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) Indoor National Championships over the weekend, awarding five division titles during the three-day event.

Despite inclement weather conditions that blanketed the northeast, over 250 competitors took part in the IDPA event, which is considered by many to be one of the premier matches of the season.

As the smoke settled after 4,000 plus rounds of spent ammunition, five national champions were named including Team Smith & Wesson members Jerry Miculek and David Olhasso. Competing in the Enhanced Service Revolver (ESR) Division, the legendary Jerry Miculek stood atop the leader board after capturing the division title for an unprecedented ninth time.

With his Smith & Wesson Model 625 revolver, Miculek captured the ESR title with a 29.62-point lead over the closest competitor. In the Custom Defensive Pistol (CDP) Division, fellow Smith & Wesson teammate David Olhasso successfully defended his division title using an M&P45 pistol. Olhasso’s final score of 158.35 was enough to capture the division title, while also earning him the coveted High Industry award.

“Due to the hard work and ingenuity that our match directors, range staff and Smith & Wesson team members have demonstrated over the last three years, the IDPA Indoor Nationals is one of the most highly anticipated and enjoyed matches of the season,” said Tom Kelly, Vice President of Marketing for Smith & Wesson.

“In spite of the winter storms that kept several competitors from attending, this year’s match was extremely successful. By taking advantage of the unique atmosphere of the Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center and a dedicated group of range and safety officers, we were able to incorporate some very challenging courses of fire. Smith & Wesson is honored to have had the opportunity to host the match for a third consecutive year and we would like to congratulate and thank all of the participants who contributed to its success.”

Throughout the three-day event, additional members of Team Smith & Wesson delivered solid performances. Craig Buckland, fresh off winning two division titles in January, earned 1st Place in Master Class in the Stock Service Revolver (SSR) Division competing with his Smith & Wesson Model 67.

Fellow teammate Tony Phan took home 3rd Place in the Master Class of the CDP Division shooting an M&P45 pistol and John Bagakis was awarded 2nd Master Class in the ESR Division. Tony Miele, Manager of the Smith & Wesson Performance Center, earned 2nd Place in the SSR Expert Class. Rounding out top finishes with Smith & Wesson firearms was Dan Burwell, who secured 1st Place Master in the Stock Service Pistol (SSP) Division along with the Most Accurate award shooting an M&P9L.

The 2010 Indoor National Championships featured 12 exciting courses of fire involving low-light and no-light conditions, moving targets and defensive shooting scenarios. In addition to the three-days of intense competitions, participants had the opportunity to participate in a variety of events including Smith & Wesson factory tours and training seminars.

Since its inception in 1979, the NRA Bianchi Cup has retained its original course of fire, consisting of four matches: Practical, Barricade, Moving Target and Falling Plates. Speed and accuracy are the keys to winning the Championship. Each event is timed and is worth 480 points, equaling a total of 1920 possible points.

Action pistol competitors are permitted to use a two-handed grip, and competitors must start with their guns holstered. During the course of the matches, participants fire at turning cardboard silhouette targets, moving targets, and steel plates that must be knocked down to count as a hit. This fast-paced style of competition has recently seen a growth in the number of spectators attending the competition.

The NRA National Action Pistol Championship is a money-winning event. Over $300,000 in cash and prizes were featured in 2009.

FORT BENNING, Ga. - -(AmmoLand.com)- Close to 300 Soldiers from all elements of the Army descended on Fort Benning Feb. 20-27 to take part in the 2010 All-Army Small Arms Championships, the preeminent marksmanship training and competition event the Army has to offer.

Army Reservist Sgt. 1st Class Russell Moore, 2nd Battalion, Small Arms Readiness Group, Camp Bullis, Texas, withstood strong competition and unpredictable weather to win the 2010 Overall Individual Championship, his second in a row. Moore and his teammates claimed the top team prize after a week full of pistol, rifle, long-range rifle and combined arms matches.

“Everybody should come here. I feel it’s a Soldier’s duty to come here and test their capability, test their mettle against their peers,” said Moore, who works at Fort Sam Houston as a Department of the Army civilian working with combat medic trainees. “Hopefully everybody here takes the spirit of the event for what it truly is, which is a training event, where somebody can come and learn depth and relevance to their trade of being a rifleman first.”

Soldiers were given hands-on marksmanship instruction by the hosts of the competition, the Soldiers from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, with the intent of using those lessons learned in instruction and in competition to bring back to their units for dissemination.

“At the USAMU, we use the phrase ‘Competition to combat’ to describe the phenomena of taking lessons learned through competition to enhance the capability and lethality of the Soldier in combat,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Hodne, commander, USAMU. “The All-Army is designed to be the ultimate train-the-trainer event for marksmanship; the implications to raising the Army’s overall combat readiness after an event such as this one are enormous.”

The overall individual winners of the main categories were awarded Secretary of the Army M1 Garand Trophy Rifles. A 1911 pistol built by the USAMU gunsmiths was awarded to the overall pistol champion. Teams were given plaques to display back at their units headquarters and numerous prizes were awarded to the second and third place awardees in all categories.

Five Reserve Officer Training Corps Cadets earned scholarship money provided by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Two Soldiers, Sgt. 1st Class Marc Sheehan, 209th Regional Training Institute, Nebraska National Guard, and Staff Sgt. Jason Godel, 2nd Bn., SARG, earned their Distinguished Rifleman’s badges, the highest honor one can reach in rifle marksmanship.

A new award was added to the mix this year—the Col. (Ret.) Ralph Puckett Excellence in Marksmanship award. It was given to the Soldier in the novice class who achieved the highest aggregate score of the two Excellence in Competition matches. Sgt. 1st Class Graham Faris, C Co. 2-29 197th Inf. Regt., Ft. Benning, Ga., earned the distinction as being the first Soldier to win the award.

During the closing ceremony, Hodne reminded the Soldiers who competed that while the seeds have been strewn at the All-Army, it is now up to them to incorporate what they learned to take back to their units.

“The lessons learned on the fields of friendly strife are helping our Soldiers accomplish their missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere,” Hodne concluded.

Springfield, MA --(AmmoLand.com)-  It’s a wrap! Over 250 competitors fired on 12 stages of fire at this year’s IDPA Indoor Nationals hosted by the Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center in Springfield, MA. Weather proved to be a challenge for competitors this year with the winter storms pummeling the northeast. Several weren’t able to attend, but the rest successfully braved the conditions to vie for national titles at the three day event.

Was the match challenging?
Consider the results. The spread between the top scores in the divisions was significant. 354 Procedural Errors were issued, 158 Failures to Neutralize and 161 hits on Non-Threats. In a sport that stresses accuracy, penalizing for improper use of cover and failure to follow stage procedures, competitors earned a whopping total 26,997 points down. Average that over the total number of shooters who completed the match, that’s over 100 points per shooter!

Top names in the shooting sports battled for titles in each of the five divisions.

EOTAC’s Bob Vogel, a dominating presence in IDPA, posted the fastest the fastest time of 144.85 seconds. He also won Enhanced Service Pistol and High Law Enforcement. Team Smith & Wesson’s Dave Olhasso was next in posting the fastest overall time.

Even though a favorite to win the Custom Defensive Pistol division, Olhasso won the coveted High Industry title besting Dave Sevigny (Glock). Todd Jarrett (StrikeForce) and Phil Strader (S&W) to name just a few. Sevigny’s score of 167.17 earned him the Stock Service Pistol Division title overDan Burwell (Burwell Gunsmithing).

Burwell proved that being Most Accurate in the match had it’s benefits as he was just 3.31 seconds away from the Division Title.

No surprise, the legendary Jerry Miculek of Team Smith & Wesson added yet another IDPA National Title to his list, easily capturing Enhanced Service Revolver. Josh Lentz posted a commanding lead of nearly 13 seconds over defending champion, Craig Buckland for the Stock Service Revolver National Title.

Robert Vogel Wins High Overall at the 2010 Smith & Wesson Indoor Championship

West Columbia, SC --(AmmoLand.com)- Team EOTAC’s Robert Vogel won the Enhanced Service Pistol title while posting the fastest time of the match at the 2010 Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor Nationals held February 25-27 in Springfield, Mass., at the Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center.

Vogel, who is a law enforcement officer in Wapakoneta, Ohio, came away with a score of 144.85. Vogel beat Team Glock’s Dave Sevigny, winner of Stock Service Pistol, by 22.32 points, making this the third year in a row Vogel has finished ahead of Sevigny for the top score of the match. Vogel also won the High Law Enforcement title.

The Smith & Wesson IPDA Indoor Nationals has become one of the most popular matches on the IDPA schedule. This year Vogel’s fellow Team EOTAC teammate Mark Redl shot the match and Team EOTAC’s Team Captain was the Range Master and Sponsor Coordinator for the match.

Mark Redl competed in the CDP division and ended the match six spots out of first to secure 5th Master with a score of 231.86.

“I am extremely proud of Bob Vogel’s performance at the Indoor Nationals. It’s not easy being a full time police officer and getting the time off to compete in our shooting sports. Vogel continues to show just how dedicated he is to our shooting sports community and how talented he is as a shooter. Team EOTAC’s Bob Vogel is the Top Shooter at the S&W IDPA Indoor Nationals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co --(AmmoLand.com)- Eleven members of the 2010 World Championship team were selected following the Spring Airgun Championships, which served as Part II of the World Championship Team selection for the men’s and women’s open air rifle and pistol events.

Six air rifle and five air pistol shooters qualified to represent the U.S. this August at the 50th ISSF World Championships in Munich, Germany.

The 2010 World Championship team for airgun was determined by the match scores from the first two days of the 2009 Winter Airgun Championships, which were held last December, added to the match scores from both days of the Spring Airgun Championships and the best two finals from both matches.

Olympic gold and silver medalist Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.) qualified for the World Championship team in Men’s 10m Air Rifle with an overall score of 2600.7 points. U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member Matt Rawlings (Wharton, Texas) grabbed the second spot in Men’s Air Rifle with a total score of 2584.2 and Jonathan Hall (Carrollton, Ga.) earned the third spot with 2577.1 total points.

Leading the Men’s Air Pistol team will be 2008 Olympian Brian Beaman, who finished with an overall score of 2507.4 points. Two-time Olympian and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.) will also represent the U.S. in Munich this summer, finishing right behind Beaman with 2506.2 points. Three-time Olympian and USAMU member Daryl Szarenski (Saginaw, Mich.) grabbed the third spot after firing a total score of 2502.1 points.

Two-time Olympian Emily Caruso (Fairfield, Conn.) lead the way in Women’s Air Rifle, qualifying for a spot on the 2010 World Championship team with 1800.4 total points. Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.), a 2008 Olympian, took the second spot with an overall score of 1798.8 points and Texas Christian University’s Sarah Scherer (Fort Worth, Texas) qualified in third place with 1796.4 points.

Teresa Meyer (Dearborn, Mich.) grabbed a spot on the World Championship team in Women’s Air Pistol after firing 1691.8 total points, while Brenda Shinn (Riverside, Calif.), a 2008 Olympian, took the second spot with 1679.0 points.

Junior air rifle shooters will be selected to the World Championship team based on their match scores from the 2010 National Junior Olympics and National Championships. The junior air pistol shooters will qualify based on two courses of fire at the National Championships only.

2010 World Championship Airgun Team Selected

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ––(AmmoLand.com)- Smith & Wesson Corp., announced that Team Smith & Wesson members earned three division titles during the first matches of the 2010 competitive season.

Leading the team to a fast start were teammates Craig Buckland, Gordon Carrell and Jeff Degracia who won division titles in both International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) and United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) regional events.

In January, accomplished Revolver Champion Craig Buckland took home two Stock Service Revolver (SSR) Division titles in early season IDPA events. At the IDPA Arctic Blast in Hunlock’s Creek, Pa., and again at the Chili Monkey Championships in East Granby, Conn., Buckland used his Smith & Wesson Model 67 to win the division title. After the matches, Buckland commented on the unique challenges of competing outdoors in cold weather conditions.

“Both the Arctic Blast and the Chili Monkey were challenging matches that tested each shooter’s ability to deal with the cold both mentally and physically,” said Buckland. “Despite Mother Nature’s attempts, the staff at each event did a great job. The courses of fire were fair and well thought out. During both competitions, my Model 67 revolver ran flawlessly giving me that extra confidence that every shooter likes to have at the beginning of a new season.”

At the 2010 West Texas Regional Championships in Lubbock, Texas, fellow teammate Gordon Carrell earned his first title of the season in the Stock Service Pistol (SSP) Division. Using a Smith & Wesson M&P Pro Series pistol, Carrell posted the fastest overall time besting 66 other competitors.

Jeff Degracia took home the third and most recent victory for Team Smith & Wesson by winning the Limited-10 title at USPSA Florida Open. The Florida Open is the first major USPSA match of the 2010 season with over 300 competitors from across the United States as well as Central and South America participating in the event.

Competing with a Smith & Wesson M&P40 pistol, Degracia captured the Limted-10 title after consistently finishing among the top four shooters in every stage of fire and posting top scores in three out of the ten stages of fire.

“Many consider the Florida Open to be the first major match of the year, drawing top shooters coming to warm up for the 2010 shooting season,” said Degracia. “I decided to compete in Limited-10 for the first time in a major match and was pleased to show how competitive a standard M&P40 could be against purpose-built race guns in this division. My M&P never missed a beat and took me to the top place in the division.”

Exeter, NH --(AmmoLand.com)- Team SIG Champion Shooter, Max Michel, opened the 2010 competitive shooting season with his third straight win in the Open Division of the Florida Open held in Frostproof, Florida held February 19 through the 21st.

This Twelfth Annual competition, hosted by the Universal Shooting Academy and under careful direction of Match Director and Champion Shooter, Frank Garcia, proved to the 300 + contestants to be a challenging opening event for the year. Max amassed 1491.0520 points winning the Open.

Team SIG’s, Max Michel Wins the Florida Open

FORT BENNING, Ga. – -(AmmoLand.com)- More than 100 Soldiers and Cadets braved the cold, rain and wind over the course of two weeks to participate in the Fort Benning Maneuver Center of Excellence Pistol and Rifle Championships Feb. 3-11, hosted by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit.

“The USAMU is extremely proud to host these championships,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Hodne, commander, USAMU. “Competitions like this are very rare in the U.S. Army. They all had a great opportunity to train with the absolute best shooters and marksmanship instructors in the world and implore their skills in competition.”

The objective of this competition was three-fold, Hodne said. First was to gain some great training from the Soldiers of the USAMU. The second was to have some friendly competition amongst units here on Fort Benning. The third objective was to have fun.
Soldiers were afforded the opportunity to earn excellence-in-competition points in both the pistol and rifle matches, which lead to the distinguished pistol and rifleman’s badges. Additionally, the Soldiers had the chance to shoot on some of the same ranges where the much bigger All-Army Small Arms championships will take place, possibly gaining an advantage over the hundreds of Soldiers and Cadets from throughout the Army who will make their way to Fort Benning for the match at the end of the month.

“Our core competency is engaging those targets that we shoot at and hitting them the first time,” said Col. Charles Durr, chief of staff, MCOE. “This competition, along with all of the competitions the USAMU sponsors, helps us instill discipline and skill in each one of our Soldiers.”

Cadet Sean-Paul Adams, North Georgia College and State University ROTC, swept the biggest awards, claiming the commanding general’s trophy as overall champion in both the pistol and rifle matches. He was followed by Spc. Benjamin Lanzotti, 75th Ranger Regt., who had the top score in the novice division. Staff Sgt. Jeramy Smith, 75th Ranger Regt., placed first in the open division and third overall.

Team Boars’ Head, made up of cadets from NGCSU, won the team match. Members were Adams, CDT Jessica Carlock, CDT Jacob Larios, and CDT Zachary Guyton. 1st Battalion, 16th Cavalry Regt. took second while third place went to MEDDAC.
In the commanding generals pistol match, Capt. Howard Rice, 4th Ranger Training Bde., took first place in the open division. Staff Sgt. Erik Correa, Company C, RTB, was first in the novice division and Adams won in the cadet division.

At the chief of staff match, Smith took home first-place in the open division. Lanzotti won the novice division, and Adams reigned supreme in the cadet division.

Spc. Brad Balsley, USAMU, won first-place in the EIC match. Five Soldiers earned enough points during the match to be awarded the bronze EIC marksmanship badge and are one step closer to achieving distinguished status, the highest honor in marksmanship. They were: Balsley, Lanzotti, Smith, Spc. Lawrence Cleveland, USAMU, and Staff Sgt. Phillip Allison III, MCOE Band.

In the rifle match, Adams again claimed the top spot overall. Following him in second-place was Cadet Anton Kletsko, NGCSU. Third-place went to Capt. Adam Pickett, 199th Inf. Bde.

The top rifle team was the 198th Inf. Bde. with Soldiers Master Sgt. Alan Goetzinger, Staff Sgt. Bradley Schwaiger, Staff Sgt. James Slayton, and Staff Sgt. James Hidgin. MEDDAC placed second and 2nd Bn., 54th Inf. Regt. came in third.

The rifle EIC match was won by Sgt. Patrick Franks, USAMU. Three Soldiers earned their bronze EIC badges: Franks, Spc. James Travllion, and Pfc. Matthew Sawallis.

“We’ve been training really hard for this event,” said Adams. “We always like coming here to the USAMU. They really help us with all skills. The weather was nasty and cold, but it was good learning all about the wind from the guys. It’s always a lot of fun.”

FORT BENNING, Ga. —-(AmmoLand.com)- The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, in conjunction with the Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning, will host the 2010 U.S. Army Small Arms Championships, the ‘All-Army,’ Feb. 20-27. Training and competitions are open to all Soldiers of any rank in the entire Army formation, including West Point and college ROTC cadets, Army Reservists and National Guardsmen.

The All-Army Matches consist of Small Arms Firing Schools, Excellence-in-Competition Matches and special combined-arms combat matches. Champions will be awarded All-Army Trophies and Soldiers can earn EIC Marksmanship Badges, which are permanent-wear Army awards as described in Army Regulation 600-22 and have precedence above the standard qualification badges. The most coveted awards given out are Secretary of the Army Trophy M-1 Garand Rifles.

“The ‘All-Army’ is designed to test the entire depth of a Soldier’s shooting ability,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Hodne, commander, USAMU. “To succeed in the U.S. Army Small-Arms Championships, you must effectively employ the range of individual weapons from pistol, to rifle, and even to sniper rifle. Doing so with precision while under the stress of competition will challenge even the most experienced of shooters.”

Soldiers will compete in separate Cadet, Novice, Open and Pro classes based on their competition experience. Soldiers will fire M-16 or M-4 service rifles at distances between 25-500 yards and M-9 pistols between 7-35 yards. The long-range matches consist of firing the M-21 or M-24 at targets from 800-1,000 yard distances.

There are special category awards and trophies also for High Drill Sergeant, High Novice and high enlisted Soldier, Guard, and Reserve (E1-E4). Cadets enrolled in an Army ROTC program are eligible for $6,000 worth of scholarship money.

Battalion-level and up teams compete for team awards and unit recognition. All Soldiers will receive advanced marksmanship instruction and training materials to conduct Train-the-Trainer clinics upon return to their home station.

“The USAMU will provide training on all of the weapons prior to the start of the match program,” Hodne said. “All Soldiers will leave the ‘All-Army’ as more capable marksman, no matter where they find themselves in the overall standings.”

At the matches, coaches and noncommissioned officers-in-charge of the USAMU Service Rifle and Pistol teams will scout, identify and invite selected Soldiers to compete at the Interservice Championships and the National Matches later this summer. Soldiers selected to represent the Active Army are funded by the USAMU.

“It’s a win-win for the Soldiers who participate,” added Cpt. Seth Loertscher, operations officer, USAMU. “They get invaluable training from the Army’s best shooters and have all of the ammunition provided for them. All they have to do is get in their gear, shoot weapons for an entire week and they’ll walk away with some great prizes and a memorable experience. It’s guaranteed to be a good time for the competitors.”

USAMU Set To Host Army Small Arms Championships

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. --(AmmoLand.com)- The U.S. Practical Shooting Association (USPSA), the national governing body for the sport of Practical Shooting in America, has announced the dates of their 2010 national championships.

Divided into four events, the nationals are expected to draw more than 1,000 top-level shooters competing in a variety of divisions.

The USPSA National Championship dates are as follow:

• April 28 – March 2 Single Stack Nationals
• September 9 – 12 MultiGun Nationals
• October 8 – 12 Open & Limited-10 Nationals
• October 13 – 16 Limited, Production & Revolver Nationals

“The USPSA national championships are the pinnacle of the practical shooting season in the U.S. Not only do these matches draw the best American shooters, they also bring in several of the top international competitors,” said Dave Thomas, executive director for USPSA.

The first event on the calendar, the USPSA Single Stack Nationals, will take place April 28 through May 1 at the PASA Park ranges in Barry, Ill. In 2009 this event drew 270-plus devotees of the venerable 1911 pistol from which the match derives its name.

Next on the schedule is USPSA’s MultiGun Nationals which will take place in Las Vegas, Nev. at the Desert Sportsman’s Rifle & Pistol Club ranges September 9 through 12. The MultiGun championship draws close to 150 shooters and tests the competitor’s ability to engage multiple targets over a variety of field course stages all while utilizing the three firearm platforms: pistol, rifle and shotgun.

The MultiGun Nationals will determine America’s best all-around shooters in the Open, Tactical, Limited and Heavy Metal divisions.

The USPSA championship season will wrap up with the back-to-back handgun championships which will also be held at the Desert Sportsman’s Rifle & Pistol Club ranges in Las Vegas. The Open and Limited-10 division matches will be held October 8 through 12 while the Limited, Production and Revolver division matches will take place October 13 through 16.

With over 600 shooters participating, the USPSA back-to-back handgun championships represent the largest gathering of shooters within the U.S. competing in the sport of Practical Shooting. The popularity of the match is such that nearly all of the 18,000+ USPSA members will battle for an invitation to the match. In addition to America’s top guns, the match will also draw some of the best shooters from South America, Europe and the Pacific Rim.

Civilian Marksmanship Program

CAMP PERRY, OHIO - -(AmmoLand.com)- Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force JROTC rifle teams kicked off their 2009-2010 competition year as they competed in the 2009-2010 JROTC Air Rifle Postal Competitions.

For the past seven year, the Civilian Marksmanship Program has overseen the scoring of JROTC 3×10 three-position air rifle postal competitions. These annual postal matches determine which JROTC unit teams and individual cadets advance to compete in their respective service’s JROTC shoulder-to-shoulder Championship.

From those Championships, the best unit teams and individuals representing each service advance to the JROTC National Championship. Over 6,700 cadets participated in this year’s postal matches. Scores for the 2009 Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy Postal Competitions can be found on the CMP web page at http://clubs.odcmp.com/cgi-bin/matchResultSearch.cgi?designation=AIR.

Postal targets were fired in October, November and early December, with a target mailing deadline of 4 December. In all, over 20,000 targets were scored between the 1st and 18th of December when all scores were posted on the CMP web site.

To handle such a large number of targets, the CMP used its state-of-the-art electronic scoring system called Orion. This system uses Visual Imaging Scoring (VIS) technology to score the 10-bull paper targets that were scanned at 300dpi so that the Orion software could score them. This system has been used for the past three years. For more information on the Orion Scoring System, visit the Orion website is at www.orionscoringsystem.com.

The Orion software also allows competitors to not only see their scores on the CMP website, but also to see precise details about each shot, including its x/y coordinates, radial distance from the target center and tenth-ring score. Orion technology makes it possible to download printouts showing facsimiles of each shooter’s shot groups for the three positions. A major advantage of Orion is that all targets are scored according to the same standard to eliminate many scoring variations inherent in human scoring.

The top individual precision score in the 2009 JROTC postal was a 296-24X total fired by Aaron Pogorzelski of Fabens High School NJROTC in Fabens, Texas. The top sporter score was a 282-9X fired by Yvonne Swiontek of Zion Benton HS NJROTC in Illinois. The overall top team scores were an 1155-62X precision total fired by Chattahoochee County High School AJROTC in Cusseta, Georgia, and an 1112-33X sporter team score fired by Zion Benton High School NJROTC in Zion, Illinois. Downloadable printouts like the one shown above for Yvonne Swiontek, the top Sporter Individual in the JROTC Postal, are available for all cadets. The Orion Scoring System offers precise details about each shot, including its x/y coordinates, radial distance from the target center and tenth-ring score.

Score data and shot group print-outs like the ones shown here for the top sporter and precision class shooters may be downloaded from the CMP website. To obtain a score data sheet, open an individual results list for one of the services and then click on the “Aggregate” total that is shown in red for the shooter whose scores you wish to see. A PDF file with the shot data and a facsimile of each position’s shot group will download.

The postal competitions will be followed by JROTC Service Air Rifle Championships. All Service Championships will be held at Camp Perry, Ohio. The Navy JROTC Service Championship will be on 11-13 February 2010. The Army JROTC Service Championship will be on 18-20 February 2010. The Marine Corps JROTC Service Championship will be on 25-27 February 2010. The Air Force JROTC Championship will also be on 25-27 February 2010.

Those championships will not only select the top teams in each JROTC command, but they will also identify the teams that will represent each service in the National JROTC Air Rifle Championship at Anniston, Alabama on 25-27 March 2010.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado --(AmmoLand.com)- The 2009 Winter Airgun Championships came to a close at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs today with Matt Emmons, Jason Turner, Sarah Beard and Sandra Uptagrafft claiming the top spots on day three of the competition.

Two-time Olympic medalist Emmons (Browns Mills, New Jersey) was three for three at the Winter Airgun Championships, winning the Men’s Air Rife title all three days of the match. Emmons shot a near perfect qualification score of 599 out of 600 points today, followed by a final of 102.5 to end in first place with 701.5 total points. U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member Matt Rawlings (Phenix City, Alabama) finished in second place with 700.6 points and Jonathan Hall (Carrollton, Georgia) took the third spot with 700.3 points.

For the junior men, Dustin Chesebro (Laramie, Wyoming) of the University of Alaska Fairbanks took home the title with 698.3 total points after shooting an outstanding final score of 104.3. West Virginia University’s Michael Kulbacki (DuBois, Pennsylvania) finished in second place with 694.5, while Dempster Christenson (Sioux Falls, South Dakota), a member of the University of Nevada’s rifle team, earned third place with 692.8 points.

In Men’s Pistol, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Jason Turner (Rochester, New York) entered the final in first place with a match score of 580. Turner shot 99.7 points in the final and kept his lead to finish in first place overall with 679.7 points. Brian Beaman (Selby, South Dakota), a 2008 Olympian, finished the match right behind Turner in second place overall for the third consecutive day with a total score of 679.5 points. USAMU member Greg Markowski (Addison, Texas) landed on the podium in third place with 673.3 points. Will Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho) captured his third Junior Men’s Pistol title of the match today when he finished in first place easily with 663.2 points. Blake Reburn (Kensington, Maryland) took second with 646.4, while Jacob Hall (Carrollton, Georgia) finished in third place with 634.7.

In a very close match in the Women’s Air Rifle event, Texas Christian University’s Beard (Danville, Indiana) pulled out the win after shooting a near perfect qualificaiton score of 399 points, an excellent final of 104.1 for an overall score of 503.1 points. Two-time Olympian Emily Caruso (Fairfield, Connecticut) also shot a match score of 399, a final of 103.2 and finished in second place with 502.2 total points. Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pennsylvania), a 2008 Olympian, shot a perfect match score of 400 points today and ended up right behind Caruso in third place after shooting 102.1 points in the final for a total of 502.1 points.

Sarah Scherer (Fort Worth, Texas) took first place for the junior women for the third consecutive day, firing a 399 qualification score and 104.2 in the final for a total of 503.2 points. Beard grabbed second place for the junior women with 501.4 total points, while Emily Quiner (Brooklyn Park, Minnesota) earned third place with 496.3 points.

Sandra Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Alabama) earned the top spot in Women’s Pistol again today after shooting a match score of 380, a final of 96.5 for an overall score of 476.5 points. Teresa Meyer (Dearborn, Michigan) finished in second place for the second day in a row with a total score of 470.1. Courtney Anthony (Lexington, Nebraska) grabbed third place for the third consecutive day with 466.7 points. Hannah Lewis (Colorado Springs, Colorado) earned the top spot for the junior women with 470.5 total points. Starlin Shi (Potomac, Md.) finished second with 450.4 and Kathryn Kananen (Florissant, Colorado) took third place with 448.7.

2009 Winter Air Gun Championships Conclude

Fairfax, Va. – -(AmmoLand.com)- This spring the NRA Collegiate & Schools Program will be introducing a NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championship that will be open to all levels of collegiate shooters.

This new championship will include NRA College Rifle Clubs, Varsity Rifle Teams, ROTC Teams, and independent shooters, for which there is currently no national championship.

“As a result of the new championship, we hope to see a boosted level of awareness toward collegiate shooting that will help foster rifle programs across the nation,” said Tori Croft, National Manager of NRA Collegiate & School Programs.

Purdue University will be the host of the 2010 NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championship, which will be held April 8-11 at the Purdue University Armory.

The championship will feature smallbore and air rifle competitions, training summits for all participants and coaches, and an opportunity for coaches and shooters to meet others in the sport they would normally not see during the regular season. NRA College Rifle Clubs, Varsity Rifle Teams, and ROTC Teams will have both individual and team champions while Independent Shooters will have only an individual champion.

Shooting in the NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Sectionals is required to qualify for the championship. Additionally, the top three teams and top five individuals from sectionals will be given free entry to the championship.

“I am extremely excited about this new championship and would like to thank Purdue University for being generous hosts. The opportunities this will afford to collegiate rifle clubs are immeasurable,” said Croft. “The NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championship will grow and strengthen the competitive rifle teams on campuses across the nation. I eagerly anticipate this brand new championship, and urge all rifle clubs across the nation to shoot in the Intercollegiate Sectionals in hopes of qualifying.”

Three-time Olympian Daryl Szarenski and Teresa Meyer captured first place for pistol.

Emmons entered the Men’s 10m Air Rifle final with a perfect score of 600 and shot 103.3 points in the final round to capture the day one title with an overall score of 703.3. U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member Matt Rawlings (Wharton, Texas) grabbed second place with 699.1 total points. Jonathan Hall (Carrollton, Ga.) finished one tenth of a point behind Rawlings in third place with 699.0. Michael Kulbacki (DuBois, Pa.), who is part of the number one ranked West Virginia University rifle team, took first place for the junior men with 691.8 total points. Dempster Christenson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) finished close behind Kulbacki in second place with 691.6, while 2008 Olympian Stephen Scherer (Fort Worth, Texas) claimed the third spot with 689.6.

In Men’s Pistol, USAMU member Daryl Szarenski (Saginaw, Mich.) captured the title with a match score of 574, a final score of 101.4 for an overall total of 675.4 points. Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.), a 2008 Olympian, took second place with 672.6, while 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.) finished in third place overall with 670.8 points. Will Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho) won the Junior Men’s Pistol title by 13.6 points, after firing a total score of 666.7, while Matthew Pueppke (Amenia, N.D.) finished second with 653.1 points. Jack Dutoit (Arlington, Texas) claimed third place with 651.9.

Texas Christian University rifle team member Sarah Scherer grabbed the title for Women’s 10m Air Rifle after shooting a perfect match score of 400 points, a final of 103.4 for a total score of 503.4. Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.), a 2008 Olympian, finished in second place with 500.9 points and two-time Olympian Emily Caruso (Fairfield, Conn.) grabbed the third spot with 499.4 points. Scherer also took first place for the junior women with 502.8 points, while Abigail Stanec (Wadsworth, Ohio) finished second with 496.9 and Sarah Beard (Danville, Ind.) earned the third spot with 495.8.

Teresa Meyer (Dearborn, Mich.) earned the top spot in Women’s Pistol, finishing with an overall score of 472.1 points. Sandra Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Ala.) took second with 469.5 and Courtney Anthony (Lexington, Neb.) grabbed third place with 465.5 points. Anthony also took home the junior title with a score of 470.5, while Hannah Lewis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) claimed the second spot with 464.1 points and Kylie Gagnon (Bozeman, Mont.) finished third with 460.1.

USA Shooters Capture Day One Winter Airgun Championship Rifle Titles

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Over 260 rifle and pistol airgun shooters from across the United States, as well as 40 athletes from 11 countries around the world, will gather at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., December 4-6 to compete at the 2009 USA Shooting Winter Airgun Championships (formerly knows as 3 X Air).

This three-day event will serve as a minimum qualifying score (MQS) qualifier for the first-ever Youth Olympic Games, which will be held August 14-26, 2010 in Singapore. The MQS qualifier for the Youth Olympic Games is for non-U.S. competitors only as the U.S. will not be participating in the shooting events at the Youth Olympic Games.

The 2009 Winter Airgun Championships will be a U.S. team tryout for 2010 ISSF World Cups, the 2010 World Championships (part I) and the Bavarian Airgun Championships in the Air Pistol and Air Rifle Events.

Identical competitions will take place in rifle and pistol with finals matches closing out each day of competition at the Winter Airgun Championships.

Among the athletes competing will be two-time Olympic medalist Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.) along wife his wife Katy Emmons, who is a three-time Olympic medalist for the Czech Republic. Two-time Olympian Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y./Colorado Springs, Colo.), who is the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in Men’s Air Pistol, will also be shooting in the match.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. —-(AmmoLand.com)- By just over half a point, Eva Micklethwaite managed to edge out Jenny Chu to pick up her first Area win and the coveted Women’s Open division title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Handgun Championships.

Micklethwaite, who was a member of the Team USA and helped win the gold in 2008 at the International Practical Shooting Confederation’s (IPSC) World Shoot XV in Bali, Indonesia, was also crowned High Lady, a title that goes to the top overall female shooter in the match.

Through most of the match Chu held the lead with five key stage wins among the women shooters. Yet Micklethwaite stayed within striking distance giving Chu a 30 point led early but closing the gap to just under 10 points by the ninth stage.

With just two stages remaining Micklethwaite made her move.

On the tenth stage Mickelthwaite picked up 14 points on Chu by scoring 18 A zone hits and 6 C zone hits. Chu put 20 solid A zone hits down range but dropped points with a B, C and D hit as well as one Miss and one No-Shoot. This gave Micklethwaite a slim lead of just 4.5637 points going into the final stage.

With the match slipping away, Chu tried to recover putting eight of her ten shots in the A zone with the remaining two falling in the C zone. She picked up just over 42 points on the stage but it wasn’t enough as Micklethwaite scored six A zone hits and four C zone hits giving her slightly more than 37 points for the stage.

When all the scores were tallied, Micklethwaite’s late surge put her just 0.5715 points ahead of Chu with a final score of 1120.3398 to 1119.7683.

“This was one of the closest matches of the season and nothing short of nail biter. Both Eva and Jenny battled all the way, even through the very last shot of the match. It’s a big win for Eva and one that is well deserved,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Rounding out the top five were Team Smith & Wesson’s Kay Miculek in third with 1098.2849, Valarie Levanza-Rosales in fourth with 1061.9108 and Lily Chung in fifth with 985.5508.

The match, which was held November 12-15 at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club in Mesa, Ariz., drew a total of 355 shooters who put a combined 100,000-plus rounds down range competing for regional championship titles in the Open, Limited, Limited-10, Production, Revolver and Single Stack divisions.

The USPSA Area 2 region includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii and New Mexico but shooters from around the country attended.

Micklethwaite Narrowly Defeats Chu for Area 2 Women’s Shooting Titles

FORT BENNING, Ga.— -(AmmoLand.com)-  Two non-commissioned officers from the 75th Ranger Regiment competed in the 2009 Rifles Only Shooter Bash Competition held in Kingsville, Texas Nov. 6 and 7.

Sgt. Christopher K. Wooten and Sgt. Nicholas G. Irving, both assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment placed first and second respectively.

During the competition, Wooten and Irving conducted multiple sniper tasks not commonly taught within the sniper community.

Shooters Bash was specifically designed for precision rifle shooting, ranging from 400-1000 meters, with targets ranging from one inch in diameter to 11 x 18 inch targets.

“Throughout the competition, every shot had to be well calculated from the range, temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, and wind in order to make a 1,000 meter shot on an 11-inch target,” said Wooten.

Rarely did competitors shoot from the standard prone position. Much of the shooting was conducted from alternate positions, including standing, kneeling and sitting.

“As a sniper platoon, we need to focus more towards alternate shooting positions, partially exposed targets and combat-focused pistol shooting,” said Irving.

Stress shoots were also conducted which consisted of shooting from inside buses, make-shift sniper hides, and building structures. Combat pistol shots not commonly practiced nor taught were also a major portion of the competition.

During the combat pistol shoot, competitors shot one-handed from 10 meters to 100 meters as they were moving forward and dragging an 80 pound bag, simulating a wounded individual, as well as shooting moving targets.

“We are fortunate enough to be around and train with the most motivated, physically and mentally toughest individuals I have had the privilege of serving with in close to ten years of service,” said Maj. Richard Taylor, Commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Bn., 75th Ranger Regt.

“These two Rangers are not only gifted snipers, but they are extremely gifted and talented leaders and are the highest quality Soldiers.”

“One of the great qualities within this organization is the fact that these two Rangers will now take their high skill set and their advanced level of training and spread their wealth of knowledge throughout their platoon, company and the battalion,” said Taylor.

The competition consisted of 60 competitors from both the military and civilian shooting communities.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — -(AmmoLand.com)-  It took until the eleventh and final stage at the 2009 Area 2 USPSA Regional Handgun Championships before Dave Sevigny of Smyrna, Ga. was able to overtake Nils Jonasson of Mesa, Ariz. and repeat as the Production division champion. It is the fifth time Sevigny has won at Area 2 Production title.

Jonasson started the match strong winning the first three stages followed by a third place finish on stage four, behind Sevigny and the stage winner Gary Chan of Anaheim Hills, Calif., then again taking the stage win on the fifth stage. Halfway through the match, Jonasson, a Grand Master shooter who won the Production title in 2007, found himself in first place with a lead of more than 34 points over the defending champion.

Then on the sixth stage Sevigny, who is the captain of Team Glock and himself a Grand Master competitor, began his comeback winning that stage and the next four. Despite remaining behind Jonasson, who managed to keep the lead by finishing second on stages six, seven, eight and ten, Sevigny put himself just over five points down but in a prime position to win the match on the final stage.

On stage 11, the 50-point 10-round final stage of the match, Jonasson finished with seven A zone hits and three C zone hits for a total of 44 points shot in a time of 6.99 seconds giving him a 6.2947 hit factor and a final stage score of 39.8894. He finished the match with a final overall score of 1424.6612.

Sevigny, who is known for both his tremendous speed and accuracy, proceeded to attack the final stage posting the fastest time of any production shooter, 5.83 seconds, and scoring 46 points on eight A zone hits and two C zone hits for a hit factor of 7.8902 that won him both the stage and the match. Sevigny finished the match with a final score of 1429.3106 and a narrow 4.6494 advantage of Jonasson to take the win.

“This was classic production division battle and demonstrates how competitive this division truly is,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association. “Dave shot an excellent come-from-behind match winning not just the Area 2 Championship but his seventh Area title of the 2009 season.”

Rounding out the top five in the Production competition were three Master level shooters. Gary Chan finished third with 1268.6316 points while Kyle Schmidt of Gilbert, Ariz. took fourth shooting 1239.7421 and Jim Levis of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. finished fifth with 1196.4295 points.

Sevigny Overtakes Jonasson On Final Stage For Area 2 Win at USPSA Competition

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Team Smith & Wesson’s John Bagakis of Livermore, Calif. claimed the Revolver division title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Handgun Championships.

Bagakis, who is ranked a Grand Master, the highest skill level in the sport of Practical Shooting, dominated the field by winning all eleven stages for a final score of 1470. He outpaced his nearest competitor, Pat Hogue of Atascadero, Calif., by just over 302 match points. Hogue finished second in the match with a score of 1167.7836.

“John is one of the rising stars in the Revolver division as evidenced but his Area 2 win, and with the support of Smith & Wesson I think it’s safe to say John will continue to be a threat in revolver competitions,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Rounding out the top five were Dan Furbee of Apache Junction, Ariz. in third with a score of 1099.8699, John Rodriguez of Hurley, N.M. in fourth with 1092.5206 and Team Smith & Wesson member Annette Aysen of Thibodaux, La. taking fifth shooting 1064.2603.

Smith & Wesson’s Bagakis Takes Area 2 Revolver Title at USPSA Handgun Championship

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — -(AmmoLand.com)- Springfield Armory’s husband and wife team of Kippi and Robbie Leatham of Mesa, Ariz. brought home two division titles from the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Handgun Championships.

Kippi won the Women’s Production division title while husband Robbie took top honors in the Limited division. Robbie Leatham previously won the Limited title in 2005 and 2004.

“Kippi and Robbie represent a serious one-two punch for Springfield Armory and our congratulations go out to them both,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

“The sport of Practical Shooting, like many of the shooting sports, offers women shooters the same competitive opportunities as men, making it an ideal recreational opportunity for couples. The Leathams are just one example of the many husband and wife tandems competing today,” added Thomas

Among the women shooters, Kippi Leatham edged out Sara Dunivin by just over 18 points to capture the Women’s Production division title with a final score of 895.0602. Leatham’s score placed her 26th overall among all shooters competing with the duty-style pistols used in Production. Leatham shot the match using a 9mm Springfield Armory XD.

Dunivin finished second with a final score of 876.6597. Rounding out the top five women in Production were third place finisher Carrie Jamrogowicz shooting a score of 819.7222 points, Kandi Blick in fourth with 710.5567 and Ana Lisa Christensen taking fifth with a score of 642.4330 match points.

In the Limited competition the other half of the Leatham household topped an extremely competitive field of 108 shooters that included 16 Masters and five Grand Masters. Robbie Leatham, regarded by many to be one of the greatest practical shooters of all time, is himself ranked a Grand Master.

In taking the title Leatham won five of the 11 stages in the match and took the lead after the fourth. John Mouret of Surprise, Ariz. started the match out in front by winning the first stage. Henning Wallgren of Longmont, Colo. pulled into the lead after the second stage and held it through the third, ultimately handing over the lead to Leatham after the fourth stage.

Leatham remained in the lead through the rest of the match finishing with a final score of 1391.3146, over 55 points ahead of Wallgren who finished second by winning two stages and shooting 1335.6162.

Rounding out the Limited top five were Mouret in third with 1324.0954 points, Glenn Shelby of Aztec, N.M. shooting 1300.1898 and Steve Shroufe of Flagstaff, Ariz. posting a final score of 1252.8102 match points.

Keehart posted a final winning score of 935.1635, nearly 150 ahead of second place shooter Gail McLean who shot a final score of 786.0686.

Rounding out the top five women in the Limited match were Laurie Lynn in third with 622.5906, Cheryl Current in fourth with 505.8075 and junior shooter Sara Drake in fifth with 484.9109.

Para USA’s Keehart Takes Ladies Limited Area 2 Title at Handgun Championships

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Websterville, Vermont’s Steve Rubalcaba successfully defended his 2008 win by again taking the Limited-10 title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Handgun Championship.

Rubalcaba faced stiff competition from both Jim Zimmerman and Russ Shaver who took turns leading the match. Zimmerman of Commerce City, Colo. took the lead early winning the first two stages and holding the lead until the fifth stage when Shaver overtook him.

Despite the fact he didn’t win a single stage in the match, Shaver, who hails from Mission Viejo, Calif., was able to hold on to his lead all the way through the ninth stage and ultimately finish second with a score of 1371.2384.

Rubalcaba began to make his move by winning the sixth stage. He then proceeded to win the eighth, ninth and tenth stages. These three consecutive stage wins propelled Rubalcaba to the front and allowed him to take lead on the tenth stage.

Rubalcaba’s rally helped him finish the match more than 24 points ahead of Shaver and over 46 points ahead of Zimmerman and to post a final winning score of 1395.5247.

“With a little less than 50 points separating the top four shooters in the Limited-10 match, Steve had his handles full. His rally in the late stages turned the match in his favor and earned him a much deserved return visit to the winner’s circle,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Rounding out the top five were Zimmerman in third with 1349.1721, Clint Milburn of Surrey, British Columbia in fourth with 1345.5900 and Alan Liotta of Rosemount, Minn. in fifth with 1266.6925.
