class="wp-caption-text">Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries

Louisiana --(Ammoland.com)- The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is advising anyone using corn to feed deer and turkeys that care should be taken to avoid tainted corn, especially corn with high aflatoxin levels.

The best way to avoid tainted corn is to purchase packaged corn that has been tested and labeled aflatoxin free.

Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by a fungus that affects certain grain products, especially yellow corn, under conditions of high heat, drought, and high relative humidity. Consumption of aflatoxin by animals may cause liver disease, unthriftiness, abortion, poor reproduction, poor immune function and death. The severity of disease is related to the dose of aflatoxin consumed and the time span over which it is consumed.

According to the LA Department of Agriculture, there are scattered areas of aflatoxin tainted corn in Louisiana this year.

Grains contaminated with aflatoxin in excess of levels allowed in animal feeds should not be fed to wildlife. Due to the sensitivity of wild turkeys to aflatoxin, 20 ppb should be considered the maximum level for corn distributed in areas where turkeys are present.

Acute exposure to aflatoxin occurs when an animal ingests a large dose at high concentrations over a short period of time resulting in death. Birds such as wild turkeys, ducks and geese are more susceptible than mammals. However, chronic exposure is much more likely to occur with wildlife eating from a corn feeder.

The safest source of deer corn is retail stores selling corn certified as aflatoxin free. Hunters seeking a cheap source of corn directly from the field may get a short-term bargain but a long-term loss of recreational opportunity if wildlife is exposed to corn contaminated with high levels of aflatoxin.

Hunters are reminded that conditions causing high aflatoxin levels in cornfields occur only rarely under a narrow set of conditions. The most frequent source of aflatoxin is good corn that has been mishandled. Clean corn that is transported or stored at high temperatures and high humidity can produce aflatoxin within 24 hours and biologically significant amounts in a few days. Year in and year out, hunters should be vigilant about the proper transportation, storage, and feeding of corn to avoid the detrimental impacts of aflatoxicosis on all forms of wildlife.

LDWF RECOMMENDATIONS

1. Just say no to corn feeding. This is the only way to be absolutely certain that aflatoxin and other mortality factors (predators) associated with supplemental feeding will be eliminated.

2. Maintain a healthy well-balanced deer herdby proper application of either-sex harvest. Research on livestock indicates that stress-free well-fed animals are not as susceptible to aflatoxin related disorders as under-nourished animals with additional stress factors (parasites, etc.).

3. Use only certified cornthat is below 20-ppb aflatoxin.

4. Do not expose corn to rainfallduring transportation and store it in water, insect and rodent resistant containers placed in a cool location. Wildlife resources should be treated like prize livestock and fed only the best quality corn.

5. Use feeders that protect cornfrom the weather and dispense small quantities. Frequent filling of feeders with small hoppers will keep corn fresh. Do not use wet or moldy corn.

6. Frequently move feedersto reduce the risk of wildlife exposure to secondary diseases and parasites that can contaminate the soil in an area of frequent use.

7. Terminate your feeding program by February 15th each year.

8. Thoroughly clean storage containers and feeders annually. Remove dirt, old corn and debris and wash with bleach and water at the end of the season.

For more information, contact Dr. Jim LaCour at 225-765-0823 or jlacour@wlf.la.gov .

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is charged with managing and protecting Louisiana’s abundant natural resources. class="wp-caption-text">Michigan Department of Natural Resources

Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- The Michigan Natural Resources Commission on Thursday voted 4-3 to lift the current deer baiting and feeding ban in the state’s Lower Peninsula.

The ban had been in place since 2008, when Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) was detected in a deer at a private deer breeding facility in Kent County.

Baiting will still be prohibited in Deer Management Unit (DMU) 487, the six-county Bovine Tuberculosis zone in northeastern Lower Michigan. The counties where baiting will continue to be prohibited are Alcona, Alpena, Iosco, Montmorency, Oscoda and Presque Isle.

The NRC approved a proposal to allow baiting in limited quantities from Oct. 1 to Jan. 1. Hunters may place any type of bait, no more than two gallons at a time, across a 10-foot by 10-foot area per hunting location.

The NRC also reinstated recreational feeding of deer in the Lower Peninsula, with the exception of DMU 487. Property owners may place two gallons of bait on their property within 100 yards of their residence year-around.

The NRC also placed a three-year sunset on the regulations, which means it will reconsider the baiting issue again in 2014.

In 2008, the Department of Natural Resources announced it had detected the state’s first case of CWD in a three year-old female deer at a private deer breeding facility in Kent County. At the time, the Department followed protocol as outlined in the state’s emergency response plan for CWD and immediately banned baiting and feeding of white-tailed deer in the Lower Peninsula. The NRC then passed regulations making the ban permanent, but said it would reconsider the ban in three years, giving the DNR adequate time to perform disease testing and surveillance in the state for CWD.

In the three year period, the DNR tested thousands of white-tailed deer for CWD, but did not detect another case.

The NRC also directed the Department to work with the Legislature to strengthen the penalties for baiting violations. A potential bill sponsor has been identified who supports establishing an escalating scale of penalties for repeat offenders, which would include mandatory hunting license revocation.

If hunters do use bait, the DNR requests they not place bait repeatedly at the same point on the ground, and only place bait out when they are actively hunting. This may minimize the chance of direct and indirect exposure of deer to any unknown disease that may be present.

For more information about CWD, go to www.michigan.gov/emergingdiseases.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state’s natural and cultural resources for current and future generations. class="wp-caption-text">Rack one

GRAYLING, Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- Recent research has shown that whitetail deer have specific nutritional needs that change throughout the year, and that research has revealed that a simple five-pound bag of attractant won’t increase the growth of antlers nor will it improve your overall herd health.

Likewise, a single nutritional supplement used throughout the year will not yield optimal results.

That’s why Rack One has introduced the scientifically engineered IGNITE Whitetail Hunting System for 365 days of complete whitetail nutrition and attraction for your herd.

In order to grow healthier deer—which translates into bigger deer with larger, heavier antlers—hunters must supplement the animals’ nutrition year-round, and more importantly, hunters must target their specific requirements based on the current time of the year. A deer that is completely worn down and stressed after the rut has different nutritional needs than it does during the growing season. Rack One’s IGNITE system addresses those evolving needs with a comprehensive line of products that contain tailored levels of nutritional supplements such as protein and fat, but the most important factor of the system is how those nutrients are broken down within the deer’s digestive system.

IGNITE products have been specifically formulated to use a natural blend of forages

that provide high levels of protein and fat with a gradual time release of those nutrients. Studies of the average time between feedings have provided the basis for this formulaic approach to a slow nutrient breakdown in a deer’s digestive system. This allows the deer that feed on IGNITE products to completely benefit from these key components, even when they aren’t feeding. Just as the time-released-nutrient window begins to close, a deer will be ready to feed again and refuel its system. Instead of giving it a shot in the arm with a one-size-fits-all supplement, each ingredient in the IGNITE line has been purposely chosen because of its ability to provide the deer’s vital system with nutrients that break down over an extended period of time.

“We are the only company that is designing and formulating our products this way,” said Casey Keefer, vice president of sales and marketing. “Anytime is the right time for hunters to really start paying attention to the health of their herd in order to put themselves in the best possible position to harvest healthier, bigger deer the following hunting season. By pushing IGNITE products to their deer herd continuously throughout the year, hunters are ensuring their herd health for years to come.”

The IGNITE Whitetail Hunting System is not just an advantage for bucks, but does also benefit in their ability to successfully carry a pregnancy throughout the harsh winter months as well as during lactation. Malnutrition is a major cause of fawn mortality, both before birth and after. Keeping the does in peak condition allows their bodies to endure their pregnancy with a much greater chance for giving birth to healthy offspring. And for a doe, proper nutrition is vital for the health of the fawn to prevent it from dying of starvation during lactation.

“For hunters, poor nutrition translates into a diminishing number of deer that actually reproduce every year, thus shrinking the herd size,” said Keefer. “When the herd size shrinks, the competition for breeding increases, and when the competition for breeding increases, so does the natural mortality rate of bucks being killed through fighting. Everything we do here at Rack One is primarily based on overall herd health. When you can keep deer healthy, you are going to begin to see better results, bigger deer and incredible antlers.”

Rack One’s IGNITE Whitetail Hunting System is comprised of four specific phases— Condition, Grow, Scout, and Hunt. After the rut ends, it’s time to rebuild your herd health in the Condition Phase with Overload, the post-season calorie-consumption feed that helps your bucks recover from the strenuous schedule of fighting, chasing and breeding. As your deer herd stabilizes, the Grow Phase begins with Xcellerator, which is packed with the minerals and nutrients that promote herd health and growth while maximizing antler development among the bucks. When it’s time to set out the trail cams, it’s also time to begin the Scout Phase with the protein and fat-packed Chaos. In Hunt Phase, you’re ready to reign in those deer with Rut Fuel and Acorn Crush, the extremely powerful premium attractants that bring the deer to the foot of your stand and keep them there.

IGNITE your deer herd now with this year-round Whitetail Hunting System. Remember, success in this business is measured in inches. Don’t come up short.

About Rack One:
Ammoland.com)- If you’re searching for the total attraction power that brings deer to your stand and keeps them there, while maintaining the overall health of your herd, look no further than Rack One’s Rut Fuel and Acorn Crush.

Part of the IGNITE whitetail hunting system’s Hunt Phase, Rut Fuel and Acorn Crush are two powerful hunting-season formulas that are irresistible to whitetail deer, and they’ll work for you in both managing your herd and bringing the monster bucks out of their reclusive holes.

Rut Fuel is one part of the IGNITE Hunt Phase. This granulated formula is an extremely powerful attractant with an aroma that draws deer in from all around. Pushing a protein content of 23 percent and a minimum fat content of nine percent, the deer will be on Rut Fuel like a hobo on a ham sandwich.

And those younger deer you don’t harvest this year will make it through the tough rutting season and hard winter to emerge as extraordinary specimens in your herd for next year. Rut Fuel is a time-tested blend of a whitetail’s favorite ingredients combined with a burst of flavor that they cannot resist. Rut Fuel can be dropped directly on the ground, or it can be mixed into your supplemental nutrition in either a broadcast feeder or a trough feeder. Whichever way you choose to use it, the deer will certainly devour it—even if it gets wet and crusts over. So what’s that mean to you? Break out the fine china and heat up the grill, baby; we’re having some tenderloin tonight!

The other part of Hunt Phase is Acorn Crush. Everybody knows that deer love acorns. After a year of feeding on whatever they can chew, deer go mad when they find a buffet of fallen acorns on the forest floor. And now with Acorn Crush, you can recreate the madness of an acorn feeding frenzy wherever you want on your hunting property, even if the nearest oak tree is miles away. Acorn Crush is a scientifically proven premium whitetail attractant that is jam-packed with the acorn goodness that deer crave as well as superb nutritional values that they need. Acorn Crush provides an amazing protein level of 26 percent while offering a fat content of 10 percent that will ensure that the deer you don’t take this year will be in their best possible shape going into a hard winter. After all, a healthy doe is more likely to survive the winter and drop healthy twins that will amplify your herd. No matter how you use it, with Acorn Crush, the deer on your property will be fighting for a place under your stand.

Ignite your Hunting Phase with Acorn Crush or Rut Fuel now! To purchase Acorn Crush, Rut Fuel or any other phase of the Rack 1 Ignite Whitetail System visit www.huntrack1.com today. Remember, success in this business is measured in inches. Don’t come up short.

Rack One’s IGNITE whitetail hunting system is comprised of four phases and five products. In the Hunt phase, Rut Fuel and Acorn Crush are the premium attractants that bring the deer to the foot of your stand. In the Condition phase, Overload is the post-season calorie-consumption feed that helps your bucks recover from the strenuous schedule of fighting, chasing and breeding. In the Grow phase, Xcellerator is packed with minerals and nutrients that promote herd health and maximizes antler growth. In the Scout phase, Chaos is specifically formulated to drag those elusive Booners right in front of your trail cams. class="wp-caption-text">Pennsylvania Game Commission

HARRISBURG, PA –-(AmmoLand.com)- Based on a recommendation from staff, the Board of Game Commissioners today took action to eliminate regulations that allowed deer hunters to use bait in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, to increase hunter harvest in these largely-developed, high-conflict areas.

The Board accomplished this by allowing the sunset provision to take effect, thereby automatically striking the option from regulations.

In 2006, as recommended in the Game Commission’s Urban/Suburban Deer Management Plan, the Board approved the use of bait. However, before giving the regulation final adoption, the Board included a sunset provision that required a future Board to revisit the issue by March 31, 2010.

“After evaluating the impact of baiting on hunting deer populations in these suburban/urban areas, the staff determined that there has been no positive impact,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director.

“With no benefit from the option to use bait, the staff recommended that the Board eliminate this regulation by simply allowing the sunset provision to take effect.”

Baiting has long been illegal for all big game, small game, waterfowl and migratory game birds in other parts of the state. The only legal use of bait is for trapping and hunting of furbearers.
Tags: Day VI Outdoors

Columbus, GA – -(AmmoLand.com)- Even in states that allow year-round feeding, many hunters decide to discontinue feeding deer in the fall. Many believe that the mast crop will be enough, or that their annual food plots will provide sufficient sustenance for the deer, but these assumptions fail to take several factors into consideration.

First, while the mast crop is Mother Nature’s buffet for game, there’s no guarantee that it will be an all-you-can-eat one. Fluctuations in weather during the spring can cause the acorn crop to fail. Sometimes, the trees on your property remain void of acorns while your neighbor’s trees may be loaded with them. Regardless, the acorn crop or lack thereof is out of your control. However, offering feed is within your control and provides you a way to supply a secondary food source when acorns are available and a primary food source when they’re not.

Secondly, many variables can make food plots undependable. A dry fall may inhibit germination of seeds. Severe weather may hurt the crop. Poor soil may negatively impact the health of the plants thus diminishing the browse.

You may not have enough acreage dedicated to truly provide sustenance. While food plots are a must in the overall management plan of a deer herd, they are inconsistent and difficult to control. Once again, you should control what you can.

Providing feed throughout these fall months is within your power. Utilizing a supplemental food source along with food plots and hopefully a good mast crop will help keep the deer from leaving your property to find food.

Day 6 Outdoors is home to the Flat-Out Feeder, the only feeder designed to help manage trophy whitetails by controlling human scent at the feed site. Its simple, one-person setup doesn’t require tools or any additional assembly. All you have to do is take it out of the box and it’s ready to go. The feeder is gravity-fed, so it doesn’t depend on motors or batteries, which require maintenance, can malfunction or go dead.

For more info, check out www.day6outdoors.com

About:
Bass Pro Shops

Bass Pro Shops - -(AmmoLand.com)- If it’s been a good year for mast in the area of the country you hunt, acorns will attract more deer than any other food source.

Be picky though. Set your stand near the milder tasting and hands down deer favorite, white oak acorns. Chinquapin and burr oak acorns are also good.

Once those three acorns are gone, move on to pin oaks, black oaks, and red oaks when their bitter, pungent acorns drop. In the South, pecans are powerful deer attractants.

Once the rut begins, bucks become more concerned with sex instead of food. However, does are still actively feeding. Hunt the doe feeding areas and you should find bucks looking for love.

Larry Whiteley is host of the award-winning Outdoor World® Radio For more tips, log onto basspro.com

About Bass Pro Shops<br
