class="wp-caption-text">AR15.com

Honeoye Falls, NY -(Ammoland.com)- On November. 11, in honor of Veterans Day, NRA launched the website for the new NRA Life of Duty network.

The network, dedicated to all members of the armed forces and law enforcement personnel, provides news, information and entertainment for those whose profession is keeping America safe. And even though the site is geared towards those who serve, civilian readers should still find more than enough to like.

The network centers on NRA’s new e-zine (electronic magazine) American Warrior. Designed with those who serve in mind, the magazine covers tactics, technology and stories from the front lines. For instance, the preview issue includes articles on how computer technology is helping to better train our soldiers and how Beretta won over the armed services with the M9 pistol. Thanks to the online format, articles are also supplemented with embedded videos, so you can see the technology and tactics in action. And as always, NRA provides information and reviews on the latest guns and gear.

In addition to the magazine, the network is also host to a wide array of action-packed videos. The Patriot Profiles section serves to highlight through video the actions of and issues surrounding those keeping America safe. Current videos include a profile of World War II paratrooper Walter Hughes, a synopsis of training at the SureFire Institute and a story detailing the mission of the Patriot Guard Riders, who protect the families of fallen soldiers during memorial proceedings from the actions of a disgraceful few. Future plans for the site include the Gear Gallery, showcasing the latest fighting hardware; the Live and Listening section in which those who serve can talk back with the NRA; and the Hometown section, where deployed troops can keep abreast of the latest news back home.

The Life of Duty network is just the latest in NRA’s commitment to service members and law enforcement. Serving those who serve has been paramount to the NRA since its inception in 1871, having been founded to help solve the problem of poor marksmanship exhibited by many Federal troops during the Civil War. This commitment continued during World Wars I and II, when NRA assisted in developing military marksmanship programs and opened its ranges for military training. Later, in the 1960’s NRA recognized in police some of the same marksmanship problems first noticed in the military, leading to the development of police training programs and NRA’s dedicated Law Enforcement Division.

NRA’s tradition of service to those who serve continues today with NRA-ILA working to ensure the rights of service members and law enforcement officers. Two recent examples include NRA-ILA’s work to eliminate onerous gun storage and registration requirements proposed for military personnel off base and NRA-ILA’s work to improve the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act so that more active and retired law enforcement officers can exercise their Right-to-Carry in more places than ever.

If you are a service member or law enforcement officer, head over to www.nralifeofduty.tv and take a look; and if you are active duty military make sure to sign up for your free NRA membership through the NRA’s Operation Freedom’s Future program. And no matter who you are, I hope you’ll join me and consider donating to help the Operation Freedom’s Future program provide NRA memberships to our military. After all, it’s important to keep in mind the men and women in uniform whom we can thank for our ability to enjoy a safe and happy holiday season.

May the grace of this season extend to all of our readers and ARFCOM Members….Please accept my personal wishes for a Merry Christmas and a very happy and joyous New Year!

About Joe: Joe DeBergalis is a big contributor at AR15.com, a great representative for gun owners everywhere, and a great personal friend. He’s also a member of the NRA Board of Directors, Vice President of the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, and Moderator of ARFCOM’s NRA Activism Forum. A longtime NRA Election Volunteer Coordinator, he was named “Volunteer of the Year” in 2005 by NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action.

About:
AR15.Com originated in 1996 as a mailing list for firearm enthusiasts. As the years passed and interest grew, a website came into existence to present those same enthusiasts with a means to collect, share, and explore information. Shortly afterwards, a bulletin board was added to create a more interactive experience for the growing list of users. The site was still in it’s infancy, but was growing in popularity. The new site also offers the option to create a username, allowing for access to comments and notification of upcoming editions.

“We are excited about this new venture for the Conservationist,” commented LDWF Secretary Robert Barham, “Moving forward with an online version invites the entire world to step inside and see our great state from a closer view.”

First printed in 1926, Louisiana Conservationist magazine was created to keep Louisiana citizens informed and educated on fish and game regulations and conservation programs. class="wp-caption-text">American Handgunner Magazine

San Diego, Calif. --(Ammoland.com)- American Handgunner’s January/February issue hits the stands as the first in a series of six celebrating the magazine’s 35th Anniversary. This action packed issue features Springfield’s .45 XDm.

The anxiously awaited addition to the popular XD Series has a 4.5″ barrel and has upgrades in finish, CNC cuts, grip sizing spacers along with other exciting new additions.

Handgunner’s own Clint Smith writes, “Our early test gun showed the fit and finish we’ve come to expect from the XD series, and the XDm in particular. It felt solid in the hand, and the enhanced ergonomics of the grip-profile was immediately apparent.”

The XDm also features a metal magazine that holds 13 rounds and a “plus-one” 14th round.

“I like the metal magazine and have never had an issue with them in either my XD or the new XDm while firing or testing it. All the XD series guns I’ve had have been solidly reliable,” notes Smith.

In this issue, Mike “Duke” Venturino takes a look at the usefulness of Big Bore Snubbies in the feature article, “Big Bore Snubbies: Brawny carry guns—or a big waste of time?” Duke got S&W Models 627, 657 and 629 from the S&W Preformance Center and put them to the test.

“In my opinion barrels will differ more individually in regards to accuracy than they will because of lengths. What does suffer, is the shooter’s ability to actually hit with them because of reduced sight radius,” writes Duke.

Duke also comments on how the short barrel affects velocity saying, “In a nutshell, velocity loss can vary from inconsequential to extreme. The key factor is what the ammunition is meant to do in the first place.”

To read Duke’s full review of the Big Bore Snubbies, see our January/February issue.

Also, don’t forget to check out this months American Handgunner Handgun of the Month giveaway, the Para-Ordnance Package, featuring Para’s PXT Hi-Cap Single Action Limited S14. Also included as a sweet bonus is an “Urban Tactical” folder from George Tichbourn, LockSAF’s PBS-001 Biometric Safe, and the Thunder Ranch Defensive Firearms video. /> BY Thomas Swimme

The excitement of catching a shark is a joy that is still just as vibrant today as it was when I was a child. I can remember early morning salmon fishing trips with my uncles and cousins when I’d let my line drift a little too deep and end up hooking into a spiny dogfish. While this was not ideal on a salmon fishing trip, nor appreciated by my relatives, catching a shark was one of my greatest thrills. I’m still not sure if dogfish was my first fish but I am sure it was my most prized. The way they circle back and forth when being reeled in and the first sight of a fin or an eye has always given me the chills…..

FRIED SHARK FILLETS WITH SAUTÉED PEPPERS AND CILANTRO CHIMICHURRI

Ingredients:

6 ears of corn

Olive oil

4 large bell peppers (red, yellow, orange), sliced

2 large onions, sliced

2/3 head of garlic, chopped

Salt and pepper

1 lemon, juiced

1 spiny dogfish, filleted and prepared

All-purpose flour

3 lemons

Cilantro Chimichurri, recipe follows

Boil the corn. Drain and put into ice bath. When cool, cut off kernels and reserve.

Put pot over medium-high heat and add olive oil. When heated, add peppers and onions, stir, reduce to medium heat and cover. We are not trying to color the vegetables so keep the heat low and stir regularly.

Add the chopped garlic, salt and pepper. Add corn to warm. Add juice of 1 lemon to brighten the flavor.

Heat a skillet with a generous amount of oil over medium-high heat. Cut the shark fillets into 4-ounce portions. Pepper and flour each portion and pat off excess (the meat is strong enough not to need salt). When oil is hot enough, fry fillets until golden and crisp on both sides.

To Serve: Place the fillets over the bell pepper medley on the plate. Squeeze lemon juice over the fillets. Spoon chimichurri sauce around. Tailor the amount of chimichurri sauce to balance the flavor of the fish. Serve with a grassy New Zealand sauvignon blanc or light Moscato to pair with the chimichurri and combat the saltiness of the shark fillets.

CILANTRO CHIMICHURRI

Ingredients:

¼ cup Champagne vinegar

1/3 head of garlic, chopped

2 lemons

Honey

1 large bunch cilantro, minced

1/3 bunch parsley, minced

1 cup olive oil

Salt and pepper

In a bowl combine vinegar, chopped garlic, juice of 2 lemons, honey, cilantro and parsley. Slowly whisk in olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

For more information and to subscribe risk free, visit them online at Ammoland.com)- There are times when it’s really hard to keep a secret. For American COP Special Edition Annual contributing editor Dave Douglas, Ruger’s new SR556 was one of them.

While at the Ruger factory, Douglas signed a non-disclosure form for anything he saw in the plant. The SR556 turned the secrecy requirement into a far more difficult task.

Douglas can breathe easy, as the wait is over. The SR556 is available and patrol car ready. He reviews the rifle in American COP Special Edition Annual.

“Ruger has long been known for building tank tough firearms that can take a beating and still perform at level cops need,” Douglas writes.

“The SR556 comes from the factory equipped with just about everything needed in a patrol rifle. It’s practically “out of the box” ready to put in your patrol car.”

Douglas counts the SR556 as a worthy patrol partner, while his publisher considers American COP Special Edition Annual one as well.

“Our first priority is to keep cops safe on duty and off,” said publisher Roy Huntington.

“Our tell-it-like-it-is style isn’t for the weak-hearted, then again, most cops have never been accused of being shy about such things. Our national prospective brings training, tactics, equipment, ideas, product tests and a relevant cross-section of information to cops everywhere. We won’t give you bull because we know what or who is riding shotgun helps get you home at the end of your shift.”

Duty gear is a big focus of the American COP Special Edition Annual.

“Articles like “Owning the Night: Night Vision for Dummies”, “Shopping For Officer Safety” and “Gear Hogs: What’s-What For Cops” help guide law enforcement through the maze of products marketed for cops,” said Huntington. “Our writers know the value of a dollar and want to put the right gear into the right hands.”

Also helping the cause is the 2011 Buyer’s Guide, included in the Annual. The Buyer’s Guide features 94 pages of guns, knives and more tools cops need.

The American COP Special Edition Annual is available now, while supplies last. To order online visit, Outdoors Magazine

Vermont --(AmmoLand.com)- Outdoors Magazine has crossed into the “virtual” world and launched its first digital edition.

“It just makes sense,” said James Austin, the publisher of Outdoors Magazine.

“Digital magazines appeal to a certain group of people for good reasons. They are environmentally friendly, you don’t have to wait for the mail to come, they are automatically stored for you in a nice library, all the links are embedded so that if you see something that catches your eye you can be at the website in a flash … the list really goes on and on.”

Outdoors Magazine May 2010

When asked if this would eventually replace the printed Outdoors Magazine we all know and love, Austin responded with a smile.

“Absolutely not,” he said. “I am a ‘print’ guy and we know you don’t find computers in deer camps and on streams where a lot of our readers spend their time. This is an alternative, though, for those who are behind a keyboard all day and want to read the magazine at lunch while they are at work or on their laptops while they are surfing the web at night,” he said.

“We are also delighted to be able to work with a host company where you can turn the page on the monitor with the click of a mouse. You don’t have to wait for PDF’s to download and jump through hoops like you do with some other magazines,” said Austin.

Click here to see a sample copy of the all new digital Outdoors Magazine.
