title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- Ohio deer hunters have donated more than 79,750 pounds of venison to local food banks since opening day of deer season on September 24, according to Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.

The 1,595 donated deer equal approximately 319,000 meals for needy Ohioans. Last year at this time, 2,082 deer had been donated representing 104,100 pounds of venison. The Division of Wildlife reminds hunter that there are plenty of opportunities to pursue deer in the 2011-12 season.

“I’m proud of Ohio’s deer hunters who continue to show their generosity despite overall lower harvest numbers this year as compared to last,” said Scott Zody, chief ODNR Division of Wildlife.

“I encourage hunters to get out in the field, enjoy the rest of the season and to consider donating any extra deer they are fortunate enough to harvest.”

FHFH collected 125,150 pounds of venison from 2,503 deer during all of last year’s season, which ran from September 25, 2010 to February 6, 2011.

The Division of Wildlife collaborated with FHFH to assist with the processing costs associated with donating venison to a food bank. The program allows for subsidy grants to be provided in allotments that are matched with funds generated or collected by local Ohio FHFH chapters. The division subsidized this year’s FHFH operation as an additional deer management tool, helping wildlife managers encourage hunters to harvest more does.

Venison that is donated to participating food banks must be processed by a federal, state or locally inspected and insured meat processor. Hunters wishing to donate their deer are not required to pay for the processing of the venison as long as the program has funds available to cover the cost.

Currently, there are 78 participating meat processors across the state and 34 FHFH local chapters. Anyone interested in becoming a local program coordinator or a participating meat processor should visit the “Local FHFH” page at www.fhfh.org. The Web page includes a list of coordinators, program names and the counties they serve.

The ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. Visit the ODNR Web site at www.ohiodnr.com.
Tags: FHFH.org

COLUMBUS, OH --(Ammoland.com)- A while back my wife, Ann, and I were pulling onto the lot of one of our favorite fast “health food” restaurants and saw a gentleman bobbing his silver-templed head up and down behind the bed of his pick-up.

With a puzzled look we stopped and continued watching. It soon became apparent that he was playing that centuries-old game of Peek a Boo with a little guy in his stroller.

That Pap and his grandson were obviously very close. So you’re asking, “How do I become and stay close with my child?”

Try to be best friends? NO. Buy them lots of stuff? NO. Act like a kid? NO. Be the father or mother your child needs? YES.

Sit down with your spouse and talk about the kind of family you desire; then pray to God that He will give you the desires of your heart. If your desire is to love your children for the rest of your days with the same excitement you did at their birth, then resolve together to spend more time with one another than with anyone else.

We can “occasionally” become selfish with our time. Spending “quality time” with someone we love is one of this generation’s biggest excuses for not spending “quantities of time” with our loved ones. A Saturday af-ternoon at the movies cannot replace daily or near daily time playing and working with our children – and spouses. Some believe the other lie that their careers must come before their families – after all (the excuse goes) we are the providers.

I’ve learned that some men have actually found they receive nearly unlimited kitchen passes as long as their kids accompany them?

At a church council meeting our Pastor’s wife made a very simple, BUT POWERFUL, statement. She said, “One of Satan’s most effective tools is keeping us busy.” She said B U S Y N E S S can keep us from the most important activity in our life – spending time with God!

One council member asked, “How can being busy in ministry several evenings a week keep us from spending time with our families and God?” Early in my life my mother was busy at the church several evenings every week with choir practice, class meetings, and helping her friend from the choir take care of others; then one day my dad said we needed her! From that day on she spent more time with us and with God whom she loved.

My wife made a rule shortly after we married. We were each allowed one regular evening per week apart from our family – JUST ONE! I’ve spent hours talking with Wil Graham about ballistics, archery and what it takes to create a Godly family.

His dad Franklin even wrote a book about his experiences growing up the son of the most famous evangelist of modern times. You’ve probably noticed that some of the difficult and unhappy individuals you know are the children of pastors. If you doubt that our time is what our children desire most, then ask them while still under the age of 10 what they would most like to do with you.

Their answer will be PLAY. Once we’ve established that early relationship, we must develop it daily. If we don’t – WE’VE LOST THEM!

I’m convinced that relationship can extend through the difficult teen years and into adult-hood. Early in the spring before my dad went to live for eternity with Howard Hill, Fred Bear and the other great hunters who loved the Lord he said, “What do you want to do today?” I answered, “Let’s go down to our hunting spot in Virginia and check out the deer.”

My dad, my brother, and I played together all of our lives; and our two sons and I began to play together when I handed them their first rubber suction cup bow and arrow on the day they were born! You can see the photos of the mighty archers. God has blessed hunters and fisher-men with a special bond from the beginning. I was once hammered by a bumper sticker that read, “Take your children hunting; and you won’t have to go hunting for your children.”

I know from conversations with many of you that you also have that special bond with your kids. One father told me that his high school senior chose to go to the World Archery Championships with him instead of his big high school dance. Of course, we knew that was just poor scheduling on the part of his school.

Recently two of our FHFH Coordi-nators, Allen Dunlap of Ohio and Jason Boyd of Indiana represented FHFH at the 2011 QDMA National Convention held in Nashville. Allen and his 12 year-old son, Luke, and Jason and his 12 year-old son, Noah, and the rest of their gang spent a bit of time talking with Jeff Foxworthy, a familiar face in both the world of hunting and the world of 5th graders. These families hunt, travel, and play together.

AND MY GUESS IS THAT THEY WILL REMAIN CLOSE FOR LIFE!

Many of our Coordinators are training the next generation of FHFH leaders in their communities. I know this to be a fact because as I talk with them throughout the year it’s difficult for them to tell me about their latest adventures in hunting and feeding the hungry without bragging about these growing leaders – their kids!
So from whom did we as parents and grandparents receive this desire to be a close family? For many it’s written on our hearts.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 The answer can be found in Mark 9:33.

About:
FHFH.org

COLUMBUS, OH –-(Ammoland.com)- Many folks think our world is in trouble economically, socially, and spiritually.

How can we as hunters and farmers make a heart shot; and turn the clock back to a better day?

Let’s read what the Bible, the true and eternal Word of God, has to say in the last verse of the Old Testament about the disconnect occurring between parents and their children.

“And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.” Malachi 4:6 (NKJV)

Throughout North America most hunting and farming organizations are making a concerted effort to engage our young people with special Youth Hunting Days and 4-H activities. You and I can begin returning the hearts of our children to their parents and families by taking them into the world that God has created for us. When a parent and child spend a few hours sitting together in a pop-up blind striving to feed venison to the hungry their hearts beat as one. When a grandparent and grandchild share a seat on a UTV plowing a food plot they will share a closeness to God the Creator and Provider.

While watching a recently released movie, “The Nanny Diaries,” (don’t laugh) my wife and I heard the college -age nanny tell the mother of the young boy, “You have a very narrow window of time when your child has a total trust in you.” Recently, a father said to me that his son didn’t want to go hunting with him. I asked when he first invited his son to join him on a hunt. He replied, “I waited until he was 12 and able to sit still.”

Bowhunting Father And Son

As you may guess by that age the electronic distractions in life claim our children and grandchildren unless we get there first with the exciting, wild side of life outdoors that God has instilled in each of us! I was blessed with a father who GOT IT; probably because his dad, my grandfather, was a Church of God Evangelist, who failed to spend a significant amount of time with his six boys. While not yet five years old my younger brother, Don, and I were at his side on cold, opening mornings of trout season at Beaver Creek in Western Maryland.

I detested impailing the worms with those hooks. We crossed the twomile fields of ‘Ol Kentucky’ each summer to reach the Antietam Creek for our weekly adventures in bow fishing. Following many of those Saturday afternoon bow fishing trips we would take a trunk load of pretty big carp to a nearby section of town where people would flock to our car to take home a fish or two to their families for supper.

During the seemingly unending hours fletching arrows, making bowstrings, tying flies, and reloading shells dad would share our simple family values that were based on God’s Word. He explained that he and his hunting buddy, Bob Spong, did not hunt or fish with those who smoked cigarettes or drank alcohol because those habits ruined the hunt — and that included my brother and me. At the young age of eight or nine we were not aware that our dad was preparing us for the years ahead when our ‘friends’ would try to entice us into trying those and other harmful habits.

We sat in woodlots on nearby farms under oak trees together with dad and his trusty .22 caliber Hi- Standard squirrel rifle. There we learned marksmanship and shooting straight in life. In our early teens we took to the fields with my Stevens 12 Gauge Pump and dad’s Parker Double following our beagles, Chip and Beauty, as they circled the rabbits back to us. Following those hunts mom would prepare our rabbits and birds for the evening meals while dad was layed off from Fairchild Aircraft. We sat 30 yards apart from one another at the ‘Saddle” in Blair’s Valley with our Ben Pearson and Bear semi-recurve bows waiting for the shuffle of a doe’s foot steps. Bowhunting and tournament archery became our favorite outdoor activity.

As the years went by we learned to take deer to Holsinger’s Meat Market and pay for the processing so that those with less money and no deer would have meat for the winter.

My dad, mom, brother and I spent a lifetime sharing God’s world together as a family.

I know many of you throughout North America enjoy spending the same kind of experiences with your children and grandchildren in God’s great outdoors; because I’m blessed to talk with Tim, Doug, Allen, Caroline, Pete, Jason, Dean, Roger, Bonita, Duane, John, David, Henry, Jimmy and many others who call and share their family’s hunting stories. During the past decade we’ve become kind of a family who share the same passion for feeding and helping those whom God has placed before us.

And finally, during these thousands of wild adventures less than 50 miles from our homes the hearts of the parents and their children of our FHFH Family are joined together as we continue to make heart shots.

About:<br

Along with new Coordinators we have many new participating meat processors.

New Coordinators and meat processors has translated into growth in the amount of nutritious meat that we’ve been able to distribute to hungry men, women and children. This is a wonderful blessing from the Lord!

I’m excited to share this good news of how God is growing and blessing the ministry of FHFH with you. Over two thousand years ago the Herald Angels were excited to share the good news about the birth of the Savior Jesus with lowly shepherds on a hillside halfway around the world. God is still at work in this world bringing spiritual healing and meeting physical needs through the love of Jesus. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise!

You are an important part of our work. Whether you have supported FHFH with prayer, volunteer time, financial gifts, or through the donation of deer, THANK YOU AND MAY GOD BLESS YOU!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
Ohio Division of Wildlife

COLUMBUS, OH --(AmmoLand.com)- Ohio’s popular deer-gun season opens statewide on Monday, November 30, offering hunters a full week to harvest a whitetail. The upcoming season will again include an extra weekend of gun hunting on December 19-20, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

Deer can be hunted with a legal muzzleloader, handgun or shotgun from one half-hour before sunrise to sunset through December 6 and December 19-20. With a pre-hunting season population estimate of 650,000 white-tailed deer, the ODNR Division of Wildlife anticipates 115,000 to 125,000 deer will be killed during the nine-day season. Approximately 420,000 hunters are expected to participate in this year’s season, including many out-of-state hunters.

The white-tailed deer is the most popular game animal in Ohio, frequently pursued by generations of hunters. Ohio ranks 8th nationally in annual hunting-related sales and 10th in the number of jobs associated with the hunting-related industry. Each year, hunting has a $859 million economic impact in Ohio through the sale of equipment, fuel, food, lodging and more.

Ohio is divided into three deer hunting zones. Beginning on the opening day of gun season and continuing through December 6 a limit of one deer may be taken in Zone A (20 counties) and two deer in Zone B (30 counties). A total of six deer may be harvested in eastern and southeastern Ohio’s Zone C (38 counties) through the week long gun season. The antlerless deer permit will be valid for deer-gun week only in Zone C.

Beginning on December 7, the bag limit is three deer in Zone C and antlerless deer permits are no longer valid. Any time a hunter is allowed to take more than one deer, they must purchase an additional permit.

Those hunting in urban units and at Division of Wildlife-authorized controlled hunts will have a six-deer bag limit, and those deer will not count against the hunter’s zone bag limit. Antlerless deer permits can be used for the entire season in urban deer units or Division of Wildlife-authorized controlled hunts. Antlerless deer permits must be purchased by November 29.

Hunters may take only one antlered deer, regardless of zone, hunting method or season. A deer permit is required in addition to a valid Ohio hunting license.

Hunters are encouraged to kill more does this season using the reduced-priced antlerless deer permit and donate any extra venison to organizations assisting Ohioans in need. The Division is collaborating with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry to help pay for the processing of donated venison. Hunters who donate their deer are not required to pay the processing cost as long as the deer are taken to a participating processor. Counties being served by this program can be found online at fhfh.org.

Additional hunting regulations and maps of the state’s deer zones are contained in the 2009-2010 Ohio Hunting & Trapping Regulations. This free publication is available wherever hunting licenses are sold, online at wildohio.com or by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE.

The 2009-2010 licenses will not be printed on weatherproof paper. Sportsmen and women should protect their licenses and permits from the elements by carrying them in a protective pouch or wallet.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. class="wp-caption-text">FHFH.org

Ohio --(AmmoLand.com)- IT’S HERE! Finally, the day I have been anticipating all year is here. So many preparations have been made to ensure the events that take place on this day operate smoothly.

The scouting for that perfect shooter is complete. The spot within the whitetails area has been freed up from small twigs that would have surely been an obstruction at that critical moment.

All the calls are placed in the perfect pocket for access ease. The bows have been waxed up, sighted in and tuned to perfection. That number one arrow, through many practice shots, has been carefully chosen and placed in its position within the quiver. The climbers have been inspected to ensure the safety during that moment when the only thought is of making that shot. The camo is ready to be worn, the boots are ready to be tied, and the scent killers are ready to be applied so the prey will not be aware of human presence. All of these things were done, for this special day, with the same special attention as all of the years that have gone before.

A countless number of hours have been spent dwelling on every minute of how this morning will be spent. When to wake up, when to load up, and when to shut up. One slip up on this morning could change the memories that are about to be made. One infraction can and will change history. Not history that would concern the world but the type of history that on an individual level affects many “round these parts.” The kind of history that brings family and friends closer together. So many scenarios to go through. What’s the yardage? Will the wind be blowing at that critical second. Stop shaking! Keep the fingers open and the elbow up. When to take the shot. Don’t wait to long and don’t be afraid to breath.

Upon waking before the others at 3:30 am on this perfect day , I smell the crispness in the air. That crispness that is only there this time of year. The crispness that says it’s time to hunt. As that cool feeling fills my nasal passages, the excitement from memories of this particular day from years gone by fill my head. I arise from my bed and make my way to the coffee pot, being careful not to trip over the bow cases and backpacks in the dimly lit living room.

The breeze floating through the open window tells me they are out there. Out there unsuspecting of what this day is and how there fate may soon change. There is only one living creature that causes that distinct aroma of the earth being pawed at.

A buck! A shooter BUCK! I know he is out there and I know I will get to see him on this day. My mind drifts off wondering how big he will be. How many steaks will be grilled, how jerky will be seasoned and of course how many points and how will he score. The only thing is, I will not be there when the shot is made.

You see, my responsibility on this very special day is not to hunt, and not to make that perfect shot and not to bring home that perfect trophy. Mine is to make sure the morning is started with substance. Substance that will ensure the trembling in their knees is the result of the anticipation and thrill of the hunt, better known as buck fever. My responsibility is to be the mom and wife that stays behind and cleans up the mess caused from that perfect breakfast that begins each perfect memory on every perfect year on the first day of bow season.

Peggy is the wife of Tony Goodrich, Co-Coordinator for Perry County FHFH, Ohio.

About:<br

Join me on FHFH Day and throughout the season and take the extra step to help offset hunger felt by Ohioans.”

The FHFH Web site also allows people to donate cash that will supplement the funds being raised to help pay for processing the meat.

Over the last year, FHFH has more than doubled the number of chapters from 12 to 27, with the need for more. Anyone interested in becoming a local program coordinator or a participating meat processor should visit the “Local FHFH” page at www.fhfh.org. The Web page includes a current list of coordinators, program names and the counties that they serve.

A $100,000 subsidy grant has been awarded to FHFH to help pay the processing fee on donated venison. The grant money is to be matched with funds generated or collected by FHFH. The Division is again subsidizing this year’s FHFH operation as an additional deer management tool, helping wildlife managers encourage hunters to kill more does.

About:<br

Proceeds will be donated to Farmers and Hunters Feed the Hungry, a non profit, 501(c)(3) faith based feeding ministry that enables hunters to return to their heritage as food providers.

Lincoln owned the original Henry rifle in serial number 6, which now resides in the Smithsonian and is considered a priceless, national treasure. James D. Julia, owner of the leading auction in the world for high quality and valuable antique firearms, recently said of the original Lincoln rifle, “The rifle that you are commemorating, in my mind, is probably the most significant long arm produced during the 19th century.

The fact that it is one of the first six ever produced, the fact that it was presented to one of the most popular Presidents ever in the history of our nation, and its artistry and remarkable condition all make this a truly exceptional and extraordinarily important historical arm.” He added, “Recently we sold an important Colt Walker pistol for nearly $1 million. This gun, at $920,000 is currently the most expensive single firearm ever sold at an auction in the world.”

“Lincoln was a very religious man and his favorite devotional reading spoke of being charitable to the less fortunate,” says Anthony Imperato, owner and president of the company. This auction was inspired by the words of Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address in 1865 that began, “With malice toward none; with charity for all…”

Henry Repeating Arms is the exclusive licensee, appointed by The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, a Federal agency established to honor this great American milestone. The rifle is being produced at a limited run of 2,000 pieces.

Tribute features include a cameo portrait of Abraham Lincoln and a replica image of the Lincoln Memorial laser etched and hand painted into the American Walnut wooden stock; hand engraved replication of the scrollwork originally hand cut to adorn Lincoln’s rifle; and By The People, For The People, the words he movingly asserted as cornerstones of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

Visit www.henryrepeating.com/lincoln200 for high resolution rifle images and logos.

About Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission<br

Hunters took a total of 232,854 deer during all of last year’s hunting seasons.

Hunters can continue to enjoy deer hunting through February 1, 2009 as the archery season continues.

Hunters have been encouraged to kill more does this season and donate any extra venison to organizations assisting Ohioans in need. The Division is collaborating with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry to help pay for the processing of donated venison. Hunters who give their deer to a food bank are not required to pay the processing cost as long as the deer are taken to a participating processor and funding for the effort lasts. The deer were harvested throughout Southern Maryland during Maryland’s deer hunting season.

Through the FHFH program, farmers and hunters deliver their legally harvested deer or other big game to a participating meat processor. The meat is processed, packaged and frozen and made available to local food banks at no charge. According to FHFH, one deer can provide 200 meals.

“When we learned about this program, the field staff at Huntonly.com and two other area businesses – Fred’s Sporting Goods and Creative Whitetails Taxidermy – decided to get involved. With today’s economy, we can only imagine there is more of a need this year than ever before. We felt inclined to lend a hand to our community, and what better way to do that than through a sport we enjoy?” said Steve Johnson of Huntonly.com. The 15 deer donated to FHFH by Huntonly.com will provide over 3,000 meals to people in the local community.

Huntonly.com is continuing its charitable efforts and will be hosting a fundraiser on Saturday, December 6 at Scott’s Bar in Welcome, MD. “Hunter Poluzza” will begin at 7 p.m., attendees can enjoy food and drink and participate in a raffles for a variety of hunting gear including a H&R Ultra Slug Gun, donated by Freds Sports of Waldorf, MD. Proceeds from the raffles will benefit a local charity (to be determined.) Must be 21 to Attend.

Huntonly.com is looking for donations of raffle items. 100% of proceeds will be donated to local charity.
