VRI Tactical EDC Belt

Cheektowaga NY --(Ammoland.com)- BACKGROUND: Located in Cheektowaga NY, VRI Tactical is a fairly new (3 yrs or so) division of VRI Sharpening owned and run by Brian Benson.

Brian is a big, unassuming guy who is always eager to help you out, answer a question, or discuss a piece of gear.

Last year Brian attended an MDTS Combative Pistol Skills class in Buffalo, NY. I was immediately impressed with his shooting ability and personable yet non-salesman like nature while interacting with other students in the class.

I also noticed his KYDEX holster and belt pouches as well as the unique belt he was carrying his EDC (Every Day Carry) gear on and running in that class. I asked Brian about the holsters and belt. He humbly mentioned how he crafted the holster in his “shop” the day before the class (apparently no big deal!) but then lit up about the belt since it was his personal design and one of a few T&E models he had prior to full production. After lunch that day, Brian asked my belt size, and a few days later I received version 1.0 of the VRI Tactical EDC Belt in the mail for my personal wear and T&E.

THE GUN BELT:
Anyone who carries or has carried a handgun and all the requisite gear associated with carrying a handgun daily knows the importance of a good, firm, durable gun belt. If you don’t, then you probably don’t carry all that often or you don’t carry the handgun for extended amounts of time. For years, and probably even today, there are gun training circles that advocate leather as being the ONLY material a good gun belt should be made out of. Well, as with leather holsters, modern technology, materials, and manufacturing has caught up, and leather is taking a back seat to nylon, canvas, and plastic composites as the new industry standard for every day carry gun belts. Having used leather, nylon, and composite plastic belts, I can say that they all have their pros and cons. For example, I cannot and do not wear my Wilderness belt with dress pants; that is where a good leather belt comes into play. Likewise, I want to keep my leather belt in good shape for formal dress occasions, so I don’t wear that in classes or to the range.

THE VRI TACTICAL BELT SPEC’S:
The VRI Tactical EDC Belt is an extremely firm 1.5 inch double stitched tactical nylon belt with a one inch FASTEX® male/female buckle. Brian is extremely proud that this belt is made in the USA with USA made materials and deals directly with other companies to secure these materials himself. The VRI Tactical EDC Belt loops around the waistline and overlaps itself, securing back to face via VELCRO hook and loops. Once comfortable, the 1 inch FASTEX® belt buckle is secured and then drawn tight; this makes for a very secure and comfortable fit.

1.5 inch width (poorly measured by author), note how VELCRO is wrapped around top or face of belt and doesn’t just stop at the end of the belt. This is a measure of quality; not cutting corners to make assured the belt secures properly. A full ½ cm double strap thickness makes for a VERY firm and supportive belt.

The VRI Tactical EDC Belt comes with an extremely durable 1 inch FASTEX plastic buckle. The male end is easily removed for fast and simple threading through belt loops and holster loops.

PERSONAL IMPRESSIONS:
I received the EDC Belt from VRI back in November of 2010 and have been T&E (testing and evaluating) as my primary carry belt for seven+ months. I carry every day; sometimes for a few hours, and sometimes for 8+ hours. The longest I have worn the VRI belt is while instructing classes, which from start to finish average 14-16hrs. Comfort is my number one priority when choosing any piece of EDC gear, and wearing a piece of kit for extended duration is the ultimate test of comfort. The VRI Tactical EDC Belt is extremely comfortable and does not loosen throughout the day, like some nylon belts do during dynamic movement sometimes associated with gun training, riding in cars for extended periods of travel (6+hrs), or during every day about town chores.

Durability and longevity is also important, and so far it has shown zero wear or tear. This was a concern based on experience with other VELCRO hook and loop belts where the VELCRO started to come off and stitching breaks down under stress or introduced to the elements. There are no such issues with the VRI belt, which I have worn in the wet, mud, extreme heat, and humidity.

The next criteria I look for in a new piece of EDC gear is how well it conceals in regard to CCW (carrying a concealed weapon) of my handgun and overall personal defense profile. Some belts look tactical in nature, and to a trained eye or astute observer, they can easily identify you as probably someone to take note of. When conducting my every day activities, I rarely want to be noticed by anyone and attempt to be as low profile as possible, infrequently wearing any NRA gear, MDTS gear, or anything that can associate me with the shooting sports or firearms. The VRI Tactical EDS Belt is lower profile than other gun belts I own; however, it has drawn attention once or twice while traveling when TSA agents asked me to take the belt off at security. It is a carry belt that I wear covered by a shirt or coat, and I have never worn it with a shirt tucked in fearing it will draw undue attention; everyone has their personal preferences.

The final criterion is integration with the rest of my EDC kit; how does it work with my gun holster, magazine pouches, and tertiary gear? Over the years, like everyone, I have come up with a system of easily changing out gear from one outfit/pair of pants to another as the daily activities with work, family, and training evolves. The VRI Tactical EDC Belt’s plastic FASTEX buckle makes for an easy switch over, threading through belt loops, holster loops and integration with other gear. I will be honest; when I first got this belt, I did not

like how the male end of the buckle wouldn’t fit through the loops on my Raven Concealment holster, but after speaking with Brian and providing him feedback, he tipped me off to an easy fix for this problem. Simply slide the male end of the buckle off, thread the belt, and slide it back on. No big deal. Now, with minimal amount of practice, it’s a non-issue.

CONCLUSION:
Overall, I think the VRI Tactical EDC Belt is an excellent addition to the current gun belt offerings on the market today. SpeedShot electronic training systems come in two models to indicate rounds left in the magazine: an LED colored light system (left) and a digital display system.

Royal Purple Synthetic Oil

Porter, TX --(Ammoland.com)-  Every hunter knows that the most important tool he has is his gun. If the gun malfunctions, your day is as good as done. Cleaning your firearms properly is just as important to your safety as it is to your hunting success.

You may be familiar with Royal Purple’s automotive or industrial line of products, but Royal Purple also offers synthetic gun oil that contains the same proprietary additive technology Synerlec. Royal Purple’s Synthetic Gun Oil is specifically formulated to provide exceptional protection against wear, rust and saltwater corrosion and fouling. It works well in a variety of temperatures and will not thicken in cold weather.

First, find a safe place to clean your gun. Before you begin, be sure to remove any clips or magazines and check the chamber to make sure your gun is unloaded before you start the cleaning process. Check your owner’s manual before disassembling your gun, and do not go beyond what the manufacturer recommends. While your gun is disassembled, inspect it for cracks and other signs of excessive wear. If your gun is in need of repair, consult a qualified gunsmith.

Royal Purple Gun Oil

Begin cleaning your firearm from the breech end whenever possible. If you cannot do this, take safety measures to prevent pushing debris into the action. Get a phosphor-bronze brush and scrub the entire bore thoroughly. Select the proper jag or patch holder and the correct size patch for your application. Saturate the patch with Royal Purple Gun Oil and run the patch down the barrel. Remove the soiled patch from the rod as it exits the end of the bore. If you pull the patch back you can redeposit fouling and draw debris into the action. Let the gun oil soak for a couple of minutes to help remove any lead or carbon buildup.

Remove the jag or patch and attach the appropriate bore brush. Saturate the brush with the Royal Purple Gun Oil and work it back and forth through the bore three or four times. You will then want to reattach the jag or patch with a soaked patch, and run down the bore with the new patches until they emerge clean. Run a dry patch down the bore, removing any remaining residue. Make sure to check the barrel for any traces of fouling.

Take the Royal Purple Gun Oil and spray it on a patch or cotton mop, and run it down the freshly cleaned bore to leave a very light coating. This will help against rust and corrosion. Use a double ended nylon gun brush soaked in the gun oil or a degreaser to start removing any un-burnt powder or debris in and around the action. Make sure you coat any surfaces that have been degreased in addition to the moving parts with the gun oil. This will protect against rust and extend the life your gun. Make sure you do not apply too much lubricant as excess could cause the gun to collect unwanted dust and debris.

Reassemble your gun and wipe down any metal surfaces you may have touched with your hands. Make sure your bore is free of any obstruction before firing, and never attempt to clear a bore by shooting it out. Clean your scope with a camera lens or glasses cleaner and clean the body with a dry cloth.

Plan How To Carry

The number of options is dizzying, and a good, solid grounding in why certain styles/designs are better than others will get you on the street with a comfortable concealed carry holster or option. Matter of fact, I’d show it to them when you’re training them on concealed carry to help them understand and pick the right carry method for them.

While we don’t carry handguns, let’s talk about them for a moment. Your choice of handgun is a very personal one. It must become a part of you and a piece of equipment with which you are extremely comfortable. Therefore, you want something that will fit your hand properly and comfortably, yet be small enough to be easily hidden. With a concealed carry handgun, you want to knock off the sharp edges so it doesn’t get caught on clothing, holster, or cut your fingers in the process of getting it out. This is where Brownells really shines, starting with hundreds of different sights to choose from that’ll lower your sight profile or offer a rounded-off profile without the sharp edges. There are different sizes of grips, too, so do some experimenting to pick the right one to fit your hand. Now a personal note – although it is not my “carry” gun for personal protection, a number of years ago I had a full-size Colt 1911 Series 70 done by Jim Clark (318-949-9884 or clarkcustomguns.com). Jim gave the gun what he calls a “Meltdown” treatment, which consists of rounding everything off and making it mighty comfortable to carry and draw. No sharp corners, sharp edges, bulkiness. Of course, he tuned it for me too, which I know helped, but it’s the handgun I always carry when out with my Prairie Dog Population Control Society simply because it’s fun to shoot, easy to carry, and quick to draw in case of a crazed attack.

I called Jim’s shop, and they will do the “Meltdown” treatment on your handgun or on one of theirs for you. Check them out. I give their treatment my highest personal recommendation.

Trigger Time
The last “accessory” we need to talk about is called “Trigger Time”. Make sure you spend enough time training in gun handling and shooting at the range with your handgun to become comfortable with how it operates, how it handles, and how to correctly draw it from the holster you have chosen.

Be sure you get training on how your holster works. Be really sure you understand everything. There are differences between how holsters contain the handgun and how you release it, and you can get into trouble not knowing how to do a safe draw.

Again, your local gunsmith and local gun range should be able to help you on this; and if you’re the gunsmith, be sure you train your customers well. Otherwise, you can go to the NRA website to find some training resources in your area. If you’re willing to travel, there are some great training options out there. We are great fans of the training taught at Gunsite and Thunder Ranch, and add to that the training available at Suarez International, I.C.E. Training, and our own Brownells Training Group.

So, if you are of a competitive nature – or just love to shoot – or just want to watch and hang out with a gang of like-minded folks, check out what is going on in your favorite shooting sport.

As I’ve said several times before in these opening comments, I’m a faithful reader of Jim Shepards’s daily emails, The Shooting Wire and The Outdoor Wire  in which he lists a whole lot of places you can go shoot and compete. This is always the first place I go to check out what is coming up around the country. Frankly, I’m always amazed at the sheer number of competitive events that are listed in the two newsletters.

There are also lots of other places to look. Many of the major shooting sports have a magazine written specifically for that venue, or you’ll find that one of the major “gun” magazines may have large sections devoted to a specific shooting venue. I frequently go on Google when I’m looking for info, and find just about anything. So when in doubt you can always search Google for shooting competitions to attend. For instance, I put in “3-gun matches” (be sure to put in quotes or you’ll get everything from nail guns to kitchen matches) and got about 295,000 results (in 0.25 seconds). WOW – that’s lots of results – and lots of events to check out. Try it on your favorite shooting sport – I know you’ll be as amazed as was I.

Then, there are all the popular TV channels and programs that you can take a look at to see how your particular favorite competition is going. The “Sportsman Channel” is a major carrier of all kinds of competition coverage . Others include “Versus“, the “Outdoor Channel” – the chocked-full Wednesday night block plus 3-Gun Nation and various hunting shows; the “Discovery Channel” − Sons of Guns − about a gun shop that builds weird stuff; the “History Channel” − Top Shot – reality/competition w/guns; plus all the hunting shows that pop up on “ESPN”. There are also many regional cable systems that feature local hunting and gun shows, plus the local news shows, and even some “PBS” stations run hunting shows. Keep your eye out for your favorite venue. There will be something about it out there somewhere.

Phoenix, AZ - -(Ammoland.com)- The new EFFIN-A Compensator 556 is the first of its kind that can be both tuned and stacked to calibrate your rifle to combat muzzle climb through effective gas dispersal.

The EFFIN-A features four rows and seven columns rows of exit ports that can be either opened or closed through the very simple use of set screws.

The exit ports are not threaded completely through to eliminate the possibility of the screw being over turned into the chamber.

This feature also allows the screw to “bottom out” increasing tightness and ensuring that it will not work itself out under the pressure of the gas dispersed from the rifle. This Compensator also features the ability to “Stack” multiple comps end to end giving further options to the end user.

EFFIN-A Compensator 556

This product combats Muzzle Climb through two functions: Ares Armor designed the comp with tunable exit ports, which act as an outside force that returns the weapon to a “position of rest”. This outside force counters that of the weapon being fired where the shooter needs it most. This Compensator is also designed to directly increase the weapons moment of inertia by accurately counter balancing the mass of the front of the weapon in relation to the force of motion created by the outside force.

Due to the amount of time and money spent on researching the amount of pressure released during the act of firing a round and adjusting the Compensator’s balance to correspond to it, Ares Armor will not be releasing the exact weight until after the pre-order is finished and products have already shipped.

Note: testing was conducting with two types of ammunition, Matchgrade and GreenTips. The general weight is between 4 and 5 ounces.

The Compensator has an outer diameter of 1″ and is 1.95″ inches in length when the cap is removed. You have the choice of selecting the EFFIN-A Compensator in Black or Stainless Steel depending on which you decide best fits your rifle.

This full grain leather design is offered for small frame revolvers and semiautomatics.

While the Model 152 Pocket Piece has been designed to individually fit each weapon that it holds, even more critical is the holster’s ability to stay in the pocket when drawn.

Bianchi has taken three distinct steps to achieve this.

The holster is designed “inside out,” with the rough texture of the leather to the exterior, allowing it to grip the interior of the pocket.

Two “pocket hooks,” one to the front and one to the rear of the holster, attach onto the pocket if canted forward or rearward.
