Every time you pull the trigger on your shotgun, you’re assaulting your ears with up to 150 decibels (dB) of deafening noise.

While repeated exposure over 90 dB will result in permanent hearing loss, a single shotgun blast of more than 120 dB can do the same if you don’t use hearing protection every time you shoot.

How is this possible?
Because your hearing depends on the health of hundreds of thousands of hair cells that line the cochlea part of your ear. The cochlea is the tiny, snail-shaped organ of your inner ear. Each hair cell in the cochlea detects a different sound. These upright hair cells wave back and forth in a fluid. By converting a mechanical noise into an electrical impulse, the hair cells work in concert to help your brain understand what you’re hearing.

Now imagine that a shotgun blast penetrates the cochlea so hard that thousands of these hair cells are broken, bent or sheared off entirely.

Since your cochlea hair cells do not grow back, you’re hearing has suffered permanent damage. And all of this happens in a millisecond — condensing year of slow hearing loss into a single, irreversible incident. It’s like getting hit by a massive sound wave — a tsunami of sorts that destroys the most sensitive components of your ears.

Do You Want to Spend $60,000 to Rebuild Your Cochlea?
At that point, the only thing left to do is spend up to $6,000 on a hearing aid or as much as $40,000 – $60,000 on a cochlea implant, according to the National Association of the Deaf.

Or of course, you could forget about these expensive hearing enhancements and instead go through the rest of your life asking “What did you say?”…and become the butt of all those jokes from your shooting buddies.

While you may think this can’t happen to you, a recent study from the University of Wisconsin suggests otherwise.

What the University of Wisconsin Discovered About Your Hearing
In the study titled “Recreational Firearms Use and Hearing Loss,” the university’s researchers studied the hearing capabilities of 1,538 Wisconsin men, ages 48 to 92. Three-quarters of them were hunters, and one in seven also shot targets.

After adjusting for other forms of noise exposure, including snowmobile use or the operation of heavy equipment, the researchers concluded that for every five years of recreational hunting by the men in the study, the risk of high-frequency hearing loss climbed by 7 percent.

So as you can see, without hearing protection, it’s not a matter of if — but when — you’ll suffer irreparable hearing loss.

The Urbino Tactical Stock takes many of its design cues from the Benelli factory tactical stocks.

“But the Benelli stock was a point of departure for us,” says Mitch Barrie, president of Mesa Tactical and the primary developer of the Urbino Tactical Stock.

“We thought it was the most comfortable stock for tactical shotguns, but like all factory stocks it was too long for tactical applications. Our law enforcement and military customers urgently needed a stock with a reduced LoP. They were also clamoring for a stock for the Benelli M4, which is beginning to see wide adoption by law enforcement special weapons teams.”

The Benelli M4 semi-automatic shotgun has been adopted by the US Army as well as the US Marines, and is rapidly appearing in American law enforcement arsenals.

“For some reason,” continued Barrie, “the Benelli M4, while a terrific shooting platform, is something of an orphan when it comes to aftermarket stocks. Our law enforcement customers were very excited to learn we were not only working on a shorter stock, but that we were supporting the Benelli M4 right out of the gate.”

A prototype Urbino Tactical Stock for the Benelli M4 has been undergoing rigorous testing with a major west coast police department during the winter of 2009-2010, and has been receiving rave reviews from test participants.

“Apparently,” says Barrie, “it’s just what the doctor ordered. We are very excited to be bringing this innovative design to market.”

The Urbino Tactical Stock should begin shipping in April 2010. Platforms supported will be the Remington 870, Remington 1100, Remington 11-87, Benelli M1, Benelli M2 and Benelli M4 (all 12-gauge). Depending on options including cheek riser, Limbsaver butt pad and sling swivels, preliminary retail pricing is anticipated to be from $160.00 to $325.00.

Both the TLR-1®s and the TLR-2®s provide 8,000 candela peak beam intensity and 160 lumens measured system output. The C4 LEDs are impervious to shock with a 50,000-hour lifespan. In addition, Streamlight’s proprietary deep-dish parabolic reflector provides a long-range targeting beam with optimum peripheral illumination to aid in navigation. The TLR-2®s features a 650-660 nanometer red laser for long-range targeting.

With extensively live-fire tested impact-resistant construction, both the TLR-1®s and TLR-2®s are made with 6000-series machined aircraft aluminum with a black anodized main body finish. The housing for the TLR-2®s laser is fabricated from a high-impact, chemically resistant engineered polymer.

Both models provide up to 2.5 hours of continuous runtime to the 10% output level, with solid state current regulation for consistent illumination level. The TLR-2®s offers up to 2.5 hours when using the Laser/LED simultaneously.

Both lights offer a momentary-to-steady on-off switch, readily accessible by either right or left hands. The TLR-2®s also provides a three-position mode selector switch for laser only, LED only, or both modes together. The strobe feature on both models is activated within 0.4 seconds of a double tap of the momentary paddle.

The new lights also feature a tethered battery door and latch mechanism that prevents battery door loss while providing easy battery replacement.

Securely fitting to a broad range of weapons, the TLR-1®s and TLR-2®s feature a one-handed snap-on and tighten interface which keeps hands away from gun muzzles when attaching or detaching the lights. The lights mount directly to handguns with Glock-style rails and to all Picatinny rails. Both come with keys for Glock-style, Picatinny, Beretta 90two, S&W 99 and S&W TSW rails. The laser sighting feature of the TLR-2®s also features highly accurate sight repeatability when remounting. Both lights feature extensively live-fire tested, impact-resistant construction.

The TLR-1®s weighs 4.18 ounces while the TLR-2®s weighs 4.72 ounces. Both measure 3.26 inches in length. Both lights are powered by two 3-volt CR123A lithium batteries, which have a storage life of 10 years. The TLR-1®s features an IPX7 rated design, making it waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes, while the TLR-2®s features an IPX4 rated design for water resistant operation. Perfecting the “Magazine Hold”
Grauer’s evaluations found that many warfighters actually use their weapon differently in combat than how they were trained – by grasping the magazine well area with their non-shooting hand.

This “magazine hold” is often preferred even with weapons equipped with vertical fore-grips. Warfighters do this for very intuitive and ergonomic reasons. But grasping the weapon this way is problematic with current AR configurations. The hands are placed too close together for adequate control and the non-shooting hand comes into contact with the magazine, which could lead to jams.

Grauer developed the IGRS to embrace and improve upon the widely used magazine hold – while fully addressing both of these shortfalls. IGRS spreads the hands further apart, providing an ideal natural balance to the weapon while improving overall control. The design also keeps the shooters hands off the magazine using this hold, avoiding potential jams.

But the unique integrated platform approach used in designing IGRS has allowed Grauer to provide additional capabilities that improve the usability of existing AR weapons:

Don’t Let Them Smell Or See You

MADISON Wi – -(AmmoLand.com)- Hunters in search of a meaningful New Year resolution might consider pledging to keep their valued firearms in tip-top shape with proper and effective cleanings twice each year of the new decade.

“The holidays are over and most of the state’s hunters are done for the season. Now is the time to clean your firearms,” says Tim Lawhern, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources conservation warden and administrator of hunter education programs. “That means a series of steps that will ensure your firearm is ready for the next hunt or a practice shooting session.”

Lawhern says he, as is the case with many hunters, learned gun-cleaning techniques by watching others. That’s good and bad, he says.

“I have heard stories about unintended firearm damage inflicted by gun-owners who learned their methods from others who thought they were doing the right things,” he says.

Lawhern points to a series of what he calls basic maneuvers to protect your firearm investments.

“A good practice is to clean them twice per year – even if you have not fired them. This will prevent rusting and keep them in working order.”

Do not store your firearms in the cases you use for transport to and from hunting excursions.

“Those cases often hold moisture which is not your firearm’s friend for storage. You need a safe or closet you can lock.”

Before you begin, gather all the proper equipment in one place. This will help guide you through the steps without having to remember.

The equipment needed includes:

• Gun vise or cradle to support the firearm
• One-piece cleaning rod, sized to fit the firearm
• Bore guide, sized to fit the firearm
• Jag tip of proper caliber for rifles and handguns, or correct bore brush for shotguns
• Powder solvent to remove residue by burning powder
• Copper solvent to remove copper left by jacketed bullets
• Cotton patches (cotton does not melt when burned, synthetic patches react with solvents)
• Gun oil

Unload and clean the barrel

The first step is to unload the firearm.

“Don’t take anyone’s word for it. Look for yourself,” Lawhern said.

Next, always clean the barrel from the breech to muzzle when possible, he said. Place the firearm in the vise or gun cradle and install the bore guide so the cleaning rod runs down the center of the bore. Install the proper sized jag tip on the rod. For shotguns, Lawhern said, the slotted patch tip is fine.

If your firearm is equipped with a scope, make sure you leave the lens caps on or provide some sort of protection like a cloth to cover them.

“It’s important to note here the proper technique while cleaning the bore,” Lawhern said, adding all patches should go only one way down the bore. “Do not push a patch down the bore and then bring it back in. All that does is return the dirty patch along with its grit into where it came from.”

Also, he said, the motion of the rod should be one smooth stroke. Do not push a few inches in and then stop and push some more. The first patch down the bore should be a dry one to wipe out the large crud. Place newspapers on the floor or table to catch the debris as it falls.

Patches – get the right size

“If you need a jack hammer to get the patch all the way through the bore, off-center the patch by placing the jag tip halfway between the center of the patch and one corner,” Lawhern said.

But if still too tight, Lawhern says turn to a smaller patch.

Next, alternate a wet patch with powder solvent and then a dry patch down the bore. Repeat until you no longer get gray or black on the patches. After that, switch to the copper solvent.

“Read, understand and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for copper solvent,” Lawhern said. “The vast majority of copper solvent has ammonia as a base component. Left in your bore too long and it will cause pitting. You won’t be happy if that happens. When you no longer get green or blue on your patches, you are almost done.”

For shotguns copper solvent is usually not necessary. Bore brushes may not be necessary. For rifles and handguns a bore brush is not needed, Lawhern said.

“For shotguns, a bore brush should be used to remove stubborn spots,” he said. “Bore brushes should only be nylon or bronze bristled. For the average person that takes care of their firearms properly you don’t need them.”

Next, soak a single patch with gun oil and run it down the bore, remove it from the jag tip and use that patch to wipe down the outside of your firearm. No additional oil will be needed. Remove the bore guide and clean the action, including the bolt and chamber area with either patches or cotton swabs.

Be sure to lightly oil the inside of the action when done.

Clean work area, tools

You’re almost done! The final steps are to return all components to their proper storage area. Wipe off your cleaning rod with a dry patch and toss the used patches along with the newspaper. Wash your hands to remove solvents, oils, powder residue and lead.

“Firearms cost a lot of money,” Lawhern says. “It is wise to protect your investments by maintaining them with a good cleaning twice per year.”

SureFire opened for business on October 17, 1979 as Laser Products Corporation. The first product sold was the LPC Model 7, Laser-Aimed Revolver. It was the first commercially available laser-aiming product integrated with a firearm. The firearm was a Colt Trooper .357 Magnum with a helium-neon gas laser sight fixed to the gun’s original sight posts. The laser was powered by a custom built rechargeable battery integrated with a modified Pachmayr grip. This gun/laser package was sold to SWAT and Special Forces, and for anti-terrorist applications.

From 1979-1984, a series of laser sights were created for firearms such as the Remington 870, Ruger Mini-14, H&K MP5, and the Colt M-16. In 1984, a Hollywood prop master noticed the laser sights mounted on the shotguns of the LAPD and LA County Sheriffs at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Laser Prodcuts Corp. was immediately contacted by the prop master and asked to create a laser to fit an AMT Hardballer Longslide .45 caliber pistol for an upcoming movie. This laser-sighted gun was soon made famous by an up-and-coming actor named Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator.

“The only thing I received for doing the job was a hat, tee shirt, and sweatshirt,” said Ed Reynolds, company co-founder and designer of the Terminator laser. “Laser Products Corp. did get acknowledged in the film credits at the end of the picture. I still have the laser.”

Less than a year later, in 1985, the “SureFire” brand was born when Laser Products responded to requests from police departments for an effective way to attach their flashlights to their shotguns. The engineers at Laser Products began building mounts that allowed users to attach their duty flashlights to their firearms. The first SureFire-named product was the Model 300, a flashlight mount that held a duty flashlight and replaced its tailcap with a coiled tape switch that allowed remote activation of the light. The custom bracket utilized the same mounts as the company’s Model 32 laser so the devices could be used interchangeably. A few months later in January of 1986, the SureFire brand released the first ever dedicated handgun weapon light, the Model 310 built for a Colt 1911.

In 1988, the SureFire brand broke the mold of large handheld flashlights when it released its model 6C flashlight. This compact (4.6″ long) incandescent flashlight, powered by two lithium 123A batteries, produced 60 lumens of light output, that’s three times the light output of the widely used D-cell flashlights of the time. The SureFire light was waterproof, shock-resistant, and came housed in a space-age aircraft-grade aluminum body. A model with a pushbutton tailcap, called the 6P, was released a few months later. This is considered the first ever tactical flashlight and it quantified “tactical output.” The age of the illumination tool was born and flashlights would never be the same.

In 2000, Laser Products officially changed its name to SureFire, L.L.C. Since then the company’s operations have expanded with the addition of a suppressor division, an edged weapons division, and a hearing protection/enhancement division—all leading the way in their industries. The company has recently come full circle in 2009 with the release of the X400® WeaponLight. This weapon light + laser combo is the pinnacle of all that SureFire has pioneered over the last 30 years.

For 30 years, the founding members of SureFire, Dr. John Matthews, Dr. Peter Hauk, and Ed Reynolds, have committed themselves to building the absolute best products for those who go in harm’s way. These men can be found in their offices five days a week, as each one still plays an integral role in the operations of SureFire on a daily basis, as well as guiding it into the future.
