class="wp-caption-text">Down-N-Dirty Outdoors

LEWISBURG, Ky --(Ammoland.com)- Whether you consider it an art or a science, the folks at Down-N-Dirty Outdoors have completely mastered duck calling, and now they have introduced a complete line of four signature duck calls.

Designed and crafted by avid hunters and master callers, the new DND duck calls provide the full range of natural sounds from seductive feed calls and quacks to the all-important, attention-grabbing hail and comeback calls. Each with its own distinct range of sounds, the Havoc, Chaos, Hitman 2, and Vicious have all been proven in the field with years of testing.

Each call is a two-piece unit constructed of solid acrylic material that’s precision formed on a CNC machine and then final polished to a high luster. The reeds are individually cut by hand and each call is individually tuned to perfection. A laser-engraved DND Duck Landing logo and moniker finish off each call.

The Havoc is a single-reed call that was designed after years of listening to birds and hunting public land, where they can become exceptionally educated. Because ducks make many sounds that most hunters have heard but are often unable to mimic, such as squealing sounds and bouncing hen sounds, the Havoc was designed very purposefully to create those sounds.

The small bore size on this call creates more back pressure than most calls, allowing the user to get the nasty, squealy, ducky sounds you need for tough, over-pressured birds. It’s not a screamer, rather it’s ideal for days with little wind, thick cover area and areas with tough competition; it’s a call that will give you just enough “duck” to get the job done. This small, compact call is a deadly addition to any duck hunters arsenal.

The Chaos is another single-reed call in the line-up. The big brother to the Havoc, the Chaos call is also for close-in working, but is designed with a more aggressive bore. The designers at DND opened the bore up to give the hunter enough range to hit medium range hail calls down to some of the nastiest duck talk ever put into a call. The Chaos will put ducks in the spread instead of just turning a head. Easy to run, the Chaos takes very little air to operate, which is the kind of call you want when the ducks are flying close, and the guns are blazing.

The Down-N-Dirty call line wouldn’t be complete without a solid-sounding, easy-to-operate double-reed call. The Hitman2 offers plenty of volume for high flyers, as well as a low-end that will entice even the most reluctant birds. This double-reed call was developed specifically for its ease of use. From novice to expert, this is one call that should be on every duck hunter’s lanyard.

Rounding out the lineup of new DND duck calls is the single-reed Vicious. This call was crafted to do two things: kill ducks on windy days and win contests. It accomplishes both with the greatest of ease. Designed off the Havoc tone-board, the Vicious sound barrel was stretched a little more to produce more volume, and the bore was opened as wide as possible, while requiring minimal air pressure to produce the illustrious 40-note hail calls with no problem. Using a hunting-call-based tone-board allowed the designers at DND to achieve the high-end hail calls and then come down to unbelievable nasty duck talk with the Vicious. For pure power and medium duck range, the Vicious is in a league of its own.

With these four new calls from DND, duck hunters clearly have the advantage this season. Be sure to check these calls out at your local retailer or online at www.downndirtyoutdoors.com, where you can view tutorials on how the products can best benefit your hunt. The entire line of duck calls will be available in September with retail prices of $112.99, each. Specially selected translucent colors will also be available.

For more information on Down-N-Dirty Outdoors, and to get demonstrations on the entire line of calls go to www.downndirtyoutdoors.com. class="wp-caption-text">Back Mountain Outdoor Products

Dallas, PA - -(Ammoland.com)- The Rattlebox is an innovative new product designed to make rattling in deer easier, with minimal movement and best of all, more productive.

The Rattlebox is the world’s first rattling product acoustically designed to match the frequency, pitch and tone real antlers produce during sparring episodes of whitetail bucks.

The inventor Mike Castner made the announcement:

“Rattling in bucks has become a vital part of the hunting process utilized by more successful, savvy hunters. We developed the Rattlebox using a special polymer material and design that alters the size, shape, flexibility and thickness of material of each individual nodule in the Rattlebox. By engineering the materials and design as we do, we are able to authentically replicate a full range of real antler tones.

The authenticity of these tones was then tested and confirmed in a professional sound lab through a Frequency Spectrum Sound Analysis. The Rattlebox is the only rattling product that can show this relationship to real antler sounds scientifically. It’s also the only rattling product with true one-hand operation. With the Rattlebox there is nothing to put down or away, if a buck runs in you simply let it go and take your shot.”

The Rattlebox replicates the sounds made when two mature, full racked 120” class 8 point bucks lock antlers (unlike standard ½ racks from other companies). The Rattlebox is uniquely designed to be used with either hand and can be worn around leg or attached to a tree and to be used with minimal movement. The Rattlebox can also be regulated for light sparring to major fights.

Castner concluded by saying, “The Rattlebox is guaranteed to sound more realistic and be easier to use than any rattling product available today or we will refund your money.”

Rattlebox: “If it doesn’t sound like real antlers how do you expect deer to come to it?”

Sportsman Channel

Fairfield ME --(Ammoland.com)- The Bear Whisperer and North American Safari TV crew are no strangers to hunting trophy bruins.

The short story below is regarding one interesting trek in the woods in the Northeast.

We were highly anticipating tracking a particular New Brunswick – a quest for a true predator! This was a bear that was actively and frequently killing for meat.

Although calling in the East was a new experience for me, I figured it was the best tactic considering the fresh moose carcass nearby. Having used up all of their winter fat reserves, bears become ravage springtime feeders. The protein offered by newborn moose proves irresistible to hungry bears. An adult black bear can sustain a diet for one week with a moose calf kill.

The Bear Whisperer with a trophy bruin

I wanted to play on this bear’s natural instincts with a cub-in-distress call. The reason for the call was twofold. One, the bear may think there was other bears feeding on a carcass that was rightfully his own. Or two, because it was spring, the boar bears were just beginning to chase the sows. A boar’s amorous thoughts would turn violent if the sows cubs were nearby.

It has been determined that a sow may not breed if she is with her first year cubs. However, she may rebound into heat at the death of those cubs. So, a boar will graciously kill off the cubs to regain mating rights.

Thirty minutes into my second calling sequence he appeared. The steely eyed bruin cautiously slumbered towards the call, at a nerve-racking pace. He was coming directly for the ground blind. The bear was clearly on the hunt and was extremely wary of his surroundings.

I had to wait for the perfect opportunity to draw my bow back without getting caught. After a stare down that seemed to stretch the entire evening, the bear began to circle the blind. This gave me a much needed moment to gather myself. Seconds later, he reappeared a mere 17 yards from the tip of my broad head. The angle afforded me a chance to draw, and then I let it rip. The blood trail led us directly to the boar a mere 40 yards from the blind.

Down-N-Dirty Outdoors

LEWISBURG, Kentucky --(Ammoland.com)- Mark Coin and Jason Kidd, the owners of Down-N-Dirty Outdoors, were both born in the game-rich state of Kentucky, but they weren’t destined to meet until a serendipitous moment much later in life.

Life, it seems, would take them in two very different directions, with Kidd pursuing the elusive long beards while Coin served the Marine Corps.

The two wouldn’t meet until many years later, but Coin and Kidd walked very similar paths, pursuing the same outdoor goals.

From their very youths, the two found themselves drawn to the hunting woods, each honing his calling skills to become a more successful hunter.

It didn’t take Coin long to realize that the harder he worked and the longer he practiced, the more frequently he’d win the competition of calling in birds against other hunters on public land.

He soon found success with those skills off the hunting lands at official calling contests. He won the first owl hooting contest he entered—A Kentucky state competition—and he has won or placed in myriad other contests including a top- five finish in the Owl Hooting division a the NWTF Grand Nationals.

Being also very proficient at calling waterfowl, Coin has won or placed in several world style and meat duck calling contests, including his Kentucky State Title in 2004. He followed that with an appearance in the World Duck Calling Championship that same year.

Down-N-Dirty Outdoors Heckler Call

Elsewhere in Kentucky, Kidd was making a name for himself in his own right as a caller to be reckoned with by winning and placing in several local, regional and state contests. It wasn’t until 2001 that the two would meet in a duck blind, accompanied by a mutual friend. Coin’s and Kidd’s friendship was instantaneous, but their combined potential had yet to be realized.

“After spending a couple of years in the swamps and in blinds together, there was no doubt that our passion and obsession for the outdoors was mutual,” said Kidd.

“Our talks quickly turned to the need for a new breed of call in the market—calls of the highest handcrafted quality that sounded like the real thing and were priced so that any hunter could afford them. In a conversation on the way to the Kentucky State Duck Calling contest in early 2004, Down-N-Dirty Outdoors was born.”

The two dedicated hunters devised a plan around a simple idea: crafting the finest line of turkey calls ever developed, consistent with the style of hunting that made them both successful in the woods and on the stage. The calls had to be tough, they had to last, and most of all, they had to sound exactly like a live bird.

Through their experience and determination, Down-N-Dirty Outdoors has come to offer hunters the most advanced line of game calls available today.

From the unique-looking diaphragms to the exceptionally designed pot calls, the entire line is built by hand with one goal in mind: to create the finest quality, affordable game calls that absolutely mimic your prey.

There are no gimmicks; no pretty faces; no bull. The calls from Down-N-Dirty Outdoors are just the finest calls available on the market today, and they will make you a more successful hunter for years to come.

For more information on Down-N-Dirty Outdoors, go to www.downndirtyoutdoors.com. Hunter's Specialties Li'l Deuce Call
Hunter's Specialties
Cedar Rapids, IA – -(AmmoLand.com)- In 2009 Hunter’s Specialties introduced their innovative new Ring Zone® technology to the world of turkey hunting.
The Ring Zone calls were the result of extensive scientific testing about how turkeys hear and how the sound of a hen could be realistically reproduced in a call. The result was the Ring Zone call, a pan call with a ring around it that creates a resonance that faithfully reproduces the sound of a live hen turkey. Sounds produced by the call were the closest to a live hen ever reproduced as measured by an oscilloscope.
Now for 2010, Hunter’s Specialties has used the new technology to produce the Li’l Deuce Ring Zone. The Li’l Deuce resonates at the same, specific frequencies of a turkey’s optimal hearing range. It has been one of Hunter’s Specialties most popular calls over the years and is a favorite of 5-time World Friction Calling Champion and Hunter’s Specialties Pro Staff member Matt Morrett. The Li’l Deuce Ring Zone is small and compact enough to fit into a shirt pocket yet has plenty of volume to call birds in from a distance. It has a slightly higher pitch which turkeys can’t resist.
The Li’l Deuce Ring Zone is available in both glass and slate versions and comes with a carbon striker. It sells for a suggested retail price o f $22.95.For more information, log onto the Hunter’s Specialties website at www.hunterspec.com, write to 6000 Huntington Court NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402, or call a Consumer Service Specialist at 319-395-0321.Tags: Game Calls, Hunter's Specialties, Turkey Call, Turkey Calling, Turkey Hunting

class="wp-caption-text">Hunter's Specialties

Cedar Rapids, IA – -(AmmoLand.com)- The Bill Collector duck calls offer hunters plenty of versatility for different calling situations.

The calls come with a totally new tone board design that gives the call excellent volume without sacrificing the quiet, raspy sounds that bring ducks into your decoy spread. The rapid departure angle of the tone board makes this call virtually “stick proof.”

The Bill Collector is manufactured of injection-molded polycarbonate and comes in two configurations. The double reed has a mallard green barrel and clear insert, and the single reed version has a root beer barrel and a clear insert. The Santoprene™ wedge locks the reeds in place for maximum calling constancy.

“I’m impressed with the Bill Collector calls,” said Hunter’s Specialties Pro Staff member Nick Brichacek. “The single reed call can produce some good ringing hail calls and it also allows you to work right down into true duck sounds as if it were a custom call. The double reed call makes good raspy hen greeting and feeding calls. The quality and price of these two calls are hard to beat!”

Suggested retail price is $25.99.

For more information, log onto the Hunter’s Specialties website at www.hunterspec.com, write to 6000 Huntington Court NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402, or call a Consumer Service Specialist at 319-395-0321.
Tags: Hunter's Specialties

Cedar Rapids, IA - -(AmmoLand.com)- Deer are always on high alert and tuned into their surroundings. The Kruncher Deer Call from Hunter’s Specialties calms deer and plays on a whitetail’s feeding instinct.

The Kruncher is a compact, handheld call that simulates the sound of deer feeding on acorns. This natural sound relaxes deer in the immediate vicinity of your stand. It can also call in other deer that think there is food available. It calms spooked deer, stimulates deer to feed and stops deer in a relaxed manner.

Just like imitating a deer’s grunt or recreating the rattling of antlers, the sound of a whitetail feeding on acorns can cause a positive reaction. While grunting and rattling can generate emotions of anger and aggression, The Kruncher has the opposite effect. It calms spooked deer. The sound of crunching acorns actually stimulates deer to feed and puts them into a relaxed state.

Just as the rut vocalizations (bleat, grunt, snort wheeze) have meaning and are recognized sounds, so does the sound of chewing and grinding. The difference is that it is linked to the most frequent sound a whitetail experiences (feeding sounds) and can be used aggressively the entire season.

Through testing in the woods, hunters were repeatedly amazed that whitetails of all sizes and varieties had the same calm and relaxed reaction to The Kruncher. Even deer that had been spooked by other sights and sounds would relax in just seconds upon hearing The Kruncher. They would return to the source of the sound again and again.

The Kruncher is a vital part of your calling arsenal. This unique call comes with a user-friendly attaching device to keep things simple when deer are in close and hunters can’t afford mistakes. It sells for a suggested retail price of $9.99.

For more information, log onto the Hunter’s Specialties website at www.hunterspec.com,write to 6000 Huntington Court NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402, or call a Consumer Service Specialist at 319-395-0321.

About:<br

Turkey & Turkey Hunting
Iola WI, -(Turkey & Turkey Hunting) If you played in a garage band during high school, you probably know the feeling.
You could play your instrument, but probably just well enough to pound out three chords or a simple drum line. And when you listened to recordings of the bands you tried to cover, you knew immediately that the drummer or guitar player was at another level.
That’s also true with mouth calls. Many guys can pop a diaphragm in their mouth and make turkey-like noises, and quite a few can make their yelps, clucks and cutting realistic enough to fool turkeys.
However, there’s a huge gap between “good enough” and truly good. To reach — or even aspire to reach — that level, you must get inside a mouth call and see what makes it tick.
What’s in a Yelper?
turkey hunting article, Brian Lovett
A mouth call is merely one or more latex or prophylactic reeds stretched between a frame and sealed with tape. But mouth-call variants are seemingly endless. When hunters try to choose from cutters, split-Vs, stack calls, and two- , three- , three-and-a-half- and four-reed versions, things really get confusing.
Don’t despair. No matter what type of call you choose, focus on the top reed.
“On a mouth call, the top reed is the sound board,” said Steve Stoltz, world-champion caller and Knight & Hale pro-staffer. “It’s your most critical reed on the call. The other reeds underneath are there for the body of the call (or sound). The thicker each reed is, the deeper the call will be in tone and pitch.
“Reed tension affects the clearer (first) part of the call. The tighter the side and back tension, the higher-pitched the front end of the call will be.”
Many top callers test the top reed of a diaphragm by blowing the call upside down. If the tone and pitch of the reed sound acceptable, the call is likely a keeper.
The style of cut in the top reed is also a big consideration because that affects how raspy the second note of a yelp will be.
“The deeper the cut, the raspier the sound,” Stoltz said. “The wider the cut, the higher-pitched the raspy part of the call will be on the back end.”
The most common cut styles include the cutter call, in which a notch is cut out of the corner of the top reed, and the split-V, which has a small V cut in the center of the top reed.
“As far as I can see, the only difference between a cutter and split-V is the quality of the yelp is a little better (the two-tone part) in a split or inverted V,” Stoltz said. “Cutter calls, however, are a little more versatile in covering all the sounds that turkeys make, including the kee-kee run. I split the difference and use a call with a cut on one side of the top reed and one inverted cut on the other side.”

Simple, according to Stoltz: The one you blow the best.

turkey hunting article, Brian Lovett

“A mouth call should be selected by a combination of two things: ease of operation and sound quality,” he said. “It does no good to have a call that sounds more like a sick chicken than a real turkey hen.”

“Each type of call will sound different because of the way it’s built. Keep trying different designs until you find a design that fits you.”

Some general guidelines can help your search. For example, Stoltz suggested that beginners start with multi-reed calls.

“Single-reed calls are harder to use than double-reed calls, and double-reed calls are harder to use than triple-reed calls. Why?” he said. “You are trying to make a two-tone quality hen yelp with less material.”

There’s also the question of which material — latex or prophylactic — is better. The former is more common, but the latter is popular with many contest callers.

“The difference between latex and prophylactic is consistency,” Stoltz said. “Latex is more consistent, but prophylactic has a better sound quality. I use a call with a top layer of latex and the underneath reeds of prophylactic.”

Final Tips

No matter which call you choose, take care of it. That includes making sure the top reed is separated from the bottom layers before you blow the call.

“I prefer to rinse my calls in tap water and pad them dry with a paper towel,” Stoltz said. “Then, I use a flat toothpick and place the flat end between the top reed and second layers. Because the top layer is your sound board, when it loosens up, your call will be ready to go. I let the call air dry at room temperature for six to eight hours, and then place in the call in a pack and store it in the refrigerator. This extends the life of the mouth call — latex or prophylactic.”

Also, Stoltz said, don’t overthink or overdo your mouth calling style.

“The biggest mistake people make when blowing mouth calls is trying to do too much with their mouth, lips and tongue,” he said. “Air control is hard to learn, but today’s high-tech turkey calls demand more air control than mouth movement. Let the mouth call do its job — don’t do the job for the mouth call.”

April 15, 2009<br

The Johnny Stewart Calls all use the original authentic Johnny Stewart sounds, so I have a lot of confidence when calling predators. With the great start I’ve experienced in 2009, I’m definitely looking forward to what the rest of the year has to offer.”

For more information, log onto the Hunter’s Specialties website at www.hunterspec.com, write to 6000 Huntington Court NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402, or call a Consumer Service Specialist at 319-395-0321.
Tags: Hunter's Specialties

Cedar Rapids, IA - -(AmmoLand.com)- Al Morris, a member of the Hunter’s Specialties Pro Staff, emerged from a pack of professional callers at the 25th Anniversary Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation World Elk Calling Championships with the first place crown in the Professional Division.

“This is an awesome feeling,” said Morris. “I have had several second and third place finishes at the World Championships over the years, so to finally win first place is a dream come true. As always, there was another tough field of competitors this year. All my years of hunting, guiding and entering calling contests have really paid off.”

Contestants in the professional division are required to make specific calls such as cow and calf calls, barks, whistles, growls and screaming bugles before a panel of judges. Each contestant is then given 60 seconds for free-style cow and bull calls.

“The new Infinity Latex that we’re using in our Wayne Carlton’s Calls has really helped me to make quality elk sounds,” said Morris. “It’s so consistent and durable that I don’t have to worry about the sound of my calls changing in the middle of a competition.”

“We’re excited for Al,” said Hunter’s Specialties co-owners David and Carman Forbes. “We’ve been a big supporter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation over the years and the great conservation work they do. It’s special to see one of our own do so well in the competition.”

The World Elk Calling Championships are held to help raise awareness of elk habitat and conservation initiatives of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. To date, the RMEF has helped to protect or enhance more than 5.5 million acres. Prudhomme was one of many top-notch turkey callers from across North America competing for state pride, bragging rights and more than $25,000 in cash and prizes at the event.

Mossy Oak Pro Staffer Chris Parrish placed second in the Grand National Calling Championships Senior Division, while local level Pro Staffer Clint Corder took home first prize in call making for friction calls, slate call and striker.

This year’s convention attracted more than 43,000 sportsmen and women that appreciate the skill and dedication it takes to closely mimic the sounds of the wild turkey. Now, NWTF volunteers raise funds and work daily to improve critical wildlife habitat, increase access to public hunting land and introduce new people to the outdoors and hunting.

For more information, log on to www.nwtf.org .

About:<br
