Holster Arms for Concealed Carry Safety

Covington VA --(Ammoland.com)- This past week a Spotsylvania County, VA CHP holder fatally shot himself in the hip in front of his four children.

This tragic accident was entirely preventable. Investigators report that it appears the man had placed the gun in the waistband of his pants and accidentally pulled the trigger while trying to adjust his seat-belt.

In light of this, let’s all take a few moments to reflect on safe ways to carry a firearm. There are a few simple things we can do to enhance safety. Holsters should be used and all equipment should be regularly inspected for signs of wear. In addition, not all holsters are created equal and some are safer than others.

Here are a few key features to look for:

• The mouth of the holster should be reinforced so that it stays open when the gun is not in the holster. This allows for one-handed holstering and prevents pointed a loaded gun at your hand.
• The holster should hold the gun securely and should be used as intended; you would not want your gun to fall out while you are going about your daily activities.
• Use a holster that is made for the gun you are carrying. This will insure that the gun fits properly, helping to prevent accidental discharge while holstering. It will also help prevent accidental loss of the firearm during activities.
• Make sure the holster stays firmly attached when you draw your firearm. If the holster stays on your gun instead of on your belt it could cost you your life! If using a belt clip type holster, make sure the clip has a turned-under piece at the bottom that makes a positive attachment to your belt or waistband.
• If you carry your gun in your pocket, use a pocket holster. Do not put anything else in the pocket! You would not want your keys to accidentally trigger a discharge. Nor would you want any obstructions to lodge in the barrel or the action, causing malfunction and possible injury.
• If you carry in a purse, use a specially made holster-purse or attach a holster to the inside of your purse. Make sure it doesn’t move around and, again, don’t put anything in the compartment with the gun. Personally, I dislike carrying in a purse because they get stolen too easily, but sometimes it is unavoidable.
• Inspect the holster for signs of wear. Folds in worn leather can accidentally depress the trigger when holstering.

While it is true that good holsters can be expensive, there are some reasonably priced models out there as well.

What is comfortable is a personal choice, as is whether you carry inside the waist (IWB), strong side, cross draw, shoulder holster, pocket holster, ankle holster and so on. The important thing is to be safe, and these simple guidelines should help us do just that.

I do not consider myself to be an expert on any of the above topics. I am, however, really good at asking questions. I am a serious student of human behavior under stress.

Disclaimer 2:
In no way what I write should be misinterpreted as passing judgment on the Officer(s) involved. In the past, I have been judged by people who were not beside me when bad things happened. I refuse to be a “Monday morning quarterback” to situations I was not involved in.

Disclaimer 3:
The above title gives the reader an insight into how my mind works. I struggle on a good day to have an independent thought. I have had the privilege, however, to have trained with some absolutely brilliant thinkers / operators / teachers. I will attempt to give them the credit they deserve.

Recently, a transit Officer was convicted of homicide after he shot an individual to death while attempting to control the subject’s behavior. According to the Officer’s testimony, he thought he was reaching for his Taser but discharged his duty firearm instead, killing the subject.

Now, I am not here to pass judgment on the Officer’s actions, as I was not there. But for some time, I have recommended that Tasers be mounted on the duty belt on the non-dominant side, with the grip pointed backward, NOT in a cross-draw position. Why? Well, over the course of his / her career, a LEO may pull their handgun from its holster hundreds, maybe thousands of times during in-service training and qualification. A LE Trainer may pull a handgun from its holster tens of thousands of times.

Question: How many times does an average LEO pull a Taser from its holster and discharge it? In most departments that I have trained with, after initial training (with its “special” videotaped moments), the only time a Taser gets pulled from its holster is when it is used on a subject. I know of no in-service or qualification live fire course of fire for the Taser.

What’s the point?

Well, many years ago, someone much wiser than I will ever be said: “Under stress, you will revert to what you do most often or most recently.”

I only wish I could remember who told me that so I could give them credit. The point is, the dominant hand has been conditioned by hundreds (if not thousands) of repetitions to access and fire the handgun, not the Taser.

Similarly, I wish I could have a dollar for every time I saw on the range a cell phone or pager get pulled from the belt and forcibly stuffed into the magazine well of a weapon. Why? Because the operator was reverting back to the location and object on his / her duty belt that (s)he accesses most often in the course of a day – dozens of times.

Many years ago, fellow Action Target Instructor Dennis Tueller established the 21 foot guideline which has been misinterpreted over the years as the “21 foot rule”. While not diminishing the validity of what Dennis established, I can say that for the average LE Instructor (who, in theory, should be smoother and quicker at presenting the duty handgun from the duty holster) the average reactionary gap when wearing a Level II or Level III retention holster is more like 40 – 60 feet. That is with the outcome pre-determined – draw the handgun and place one or two well-placed shots on an inert practice target. Under the stress of a life -threatening attack, reaction time can double, quadruple, or deteriorate even more. Why? Well, some definitions may be useful:

Reaction Time:

“Reaction time has sometimes been described as a function of Hick’s law:
(1) H = log2(n + 1).
(2) H = ? pi log2(1/pi + 1).
H = the information-theoretic entropy of a decision.
n = the number of equally probable alternatives.
pi = the probability of alternative i for n alternatives of unequal probability.
The time it takes to make a decision is roughly proportional to H, the entropy of the decision (the log of the number of alternatives), i.e. T = k H, where k ~ 150 msec” 1

Now, I have no idea what that means, but it may be useful in calculating the probability of getting a raise or the budget you submitted. “Entropy of the decision” is the scientific way of saying “brain cramp”! What is important to note is that formula was established by test subjects that were not being presented with life-threatening stimuli, and under ideal conditions, reaction time is a logarithmic, (12, 22, 32, etc.) not an arithmetic (1 + 1, 2 + 1, etc.) variable.

Now, how many use of force options does the average Officer have?

1. Presence;
2. Verbal instructions / commands;
3. Empty hand techniques;
4. Aerosol spray;
5. Baton;
6. Taser;
7. Radio;
8. Lethal force, which can include:
1. Handgun;
2. Folding knife;
3. Baton, if targeted on “red” areas of the anatomy;
4. Shotgun;
5. Patrol Rifle;
6. Improvised weapons (“Bumper – 06”);
7. Etc.

And, let us not forget that word that has been pounded into every Officer’s head (and we have to share the responsibility for this one): Liability.

Now, let’s add the one factor that throws almost all probability theory out the window: Life – threatening stimuli.

A concept which may be more useful in understanding actual reaction time under life – threatening circumstances may be USAF Lt. Col. (Ret.) John Boyd’s OODA loop. It is not my intention here to recap my understanding of the OODA loop. (For an excellent summary, please locate and read Ken Good’s article, “Got a Second? Boyd’s OODA Cycle in the Close Quarter Battle Environment”.) Suffice it to say that after being in and running a few force-on-force simulations, most people (including myself) make mistakes in the initial Observation phase and then get caught in what Ken Murray describes as a “goofy loop” 2 – unable to make an appropriate decision as to what to do next. Or, caught on the reaction (wrong) side of the action / reaction curve.

So What?

Well, let me just throw this out for thought:

• All less lethal tools (including radio, pager, and cell phone) on the non – dominant side of the duty belt / LBE, etc., accessed and practiced with the non-dominant hand.
• All lethal force tools on the dominant side of the duty belt, accessed and practiced with the dominant hand.

Now, please don’t misinterpret me. I am not saying to stop practicing wounded / disabled drills. Now, more than ever, I practice accessing, shooting, reloading, and clearing stoppages with the non – dominant hand AND EYE only. It all boils down to, “Under stress, you will revert to what you do most often or most recently.”

Target Systems

The Gun of the Month for March is the Ms. Sentinel. This fine pistol has all the right stuff to become the best carry pistol available for your significant other. We get a great deal of questions from you on holsters and specifically on recommendations for daily carry. There are two schools of thought on best carry methods when it comes to full-size pistols. Inside the waist band (IWB) and normal on the belt carry. I actually use both methods of carry depending on the plans for the day. I prefer IWB using one of our Summer Companions, for best concealment in a more relaxed environment or while traveling in the car when I can just leave my shirt tail out, this is my first choice. Back in the day when I first started shooting IDPA, I actually competed from an IWB holster. I have carried so long with that method, I have a void where my holster rides just behind the right hip.

When you first begin carrying using an IWB holster, it may require an adjustment period. It may feel foreign at first adding the thickness of the pistol surrounded by the holster, but with time it becomes almost a part of you. I still feel almost undressed if I do not have my Summer Companion tucked inside my pants. Barrel length plays little or no role in your choice of cover garment when suing an IWB, since the majority of the pistol is covered by your trousers. Many use another shirt as a cover garment, or you can simply leave your shirt tail out to cover your pistol no matter what size pistol you carry.

If a very active and formal day is in the works for me I use one of our Lo-Profile® Holsters. The Lo-Profile® is a very comfortable holster for continuous carry, but is best concealed when wearing a cover garment. I have spent untold hours wearing either of these holsters, and I let the day’s plan dictate which will work best for me. If the day’s activities allow me to continuously wear a cover garment or are of a formal nature, the low profile is my choice.

This past weekend I have some full days and used the Lo-Profile® for the entirety of my weekend. Saturday afternoon I spent a good deal of time with the kids riding four-wheelers and found it to be perfect for that sort of use as well. Speaking as one who carries on a daily basis, the mission of the day dictates which holster I choose. If I had to choose only one holster to cover all bases, I would have to pick the Lo-Profile®. It will work for all around demands and is the perfect place to start in your holster selection. Over the years I have acquired lots of different holsters. I was a holster maker for several years, so I have many that I built as prototypes, some that other makers sent me to give opinions on their work, and quite a few that I purchased because something about them caught my eye. Over the years holsters have become for me like shoes are for the ladies. I have some for all occasions. Funny thing is as the end of the day I wear either our Summer Companion or the Lo-Profile® most of the time.

The Low Ride Plate provides five height level options, anywhere from belt height to a mid-ride height to a low-ride position. In addition, the low ride plate contains an “I-rail” which allows the holster to be adjusted vertically or on an angle and either backwards or forwards.

A small hole at the top of the low ride plate enables a security lanyard to be connected for extra safety. In addition two inserts are included with the low ride plate so the holster can fit tightly with either a 1.25” or 1.5” or 2” wide belt.

The Head Lock™ (HDL) gun retention system offers a new type of upgraded Level II gun locking system via a naturally fluid dual thumb motion. The dual thumb motion consists of first pushing the head cover forward and then pushing down on the lock button, causing the locking bridge to spring forward. This releases the gun for a smooth and efficient draw. In addition, there are two adjustable tension screws which allow the holster’s tension to be adjusted.

The tactical plate allows either a handgun and two tactical gear accessories or three tactical gear accessories to be connected to it, either vertically or at angled draw, similar to a low ride plate. The tactical plate is designed for a tactical holster whereas the low ride plate is designed for a standard belt holster. In addition, an “I-rail” offers five holster height options.

Two models, both with double leg straps that secure the tactical plate to one’s leg, are available:

• TP1000 – a standard plate with an adjustable strap that connects to a belt.
• TPQ1010 – a tactical plate with a detachable strap for quick release.
  • To convert a tactical holster to a standard belt holster, a belt-loop component can be purchased separately.
