The ‘URL’ charging handle provides the most intuitive and natural function possible based upon the normal physiology of the thumb and fingers naturally closing together during the gripping motion.

Installation of the ‘URL’ charging handle converts any M16/M4-based weapon system into a universal platform. No longer will any attention need to be paid to strong or weak side operation of the charging handle as the same completely intuitive and normal central grasping motion is instead utilized for every charging event and is equally available from either side or any condition. Weapon charging becomes a smooth, controlled and highly efficient operation that requires no re-training of muscle memory as the natural gripping action required is inherent in human physiology. Off-side, weak-side and non-traditional charging and weapons handling drills and exercises become a thing of the past as the ‘URL’ model charging handle allows the exact same grasping location, inherent feel, and tactile activation from all contact angles. There is no longer any need to switch techniques during these weapon manipulations as the centrally located rear operated activation button operates the same in all situations.

‘ADF’ Model Charging Handle - The Ambidextrous-Dual Functioning model appeals to the operator who prefers the advantages of ambidextrous activation, combined with aggressive activation during rapid-action scenarios.

The ‘ADF’ charging handle is engineered to eliminate the traditional weakness found in normal charging handles when certain modern charging techniques, such as “blading”, are used to rapidly and forcefully open the latch and charge the weapon. Under such techniques the full direct force of the operators actions are directed into the very small and weak latch retaining pin area, an area that was never designed to accommodate such forces.

The revolutionary ‘ADF’ activation mechanism design completely eliminates that pathway of force transmission. With the new design there is NO direct contact, or force transmission, into the latch pivot pin itself along that pathway, eliminating any chance of breaking the pin or tearing apart the charging handle at that location. Instead, this design offers right and left side activation levers that provide initial contact to begin opening the latch, but then the force transmission pathway immediately re-directs all rearward forces back into the structure of the charging handle itself, removing any shock and stress to either the individual activation levers or the retaining latch itself. By this mechanical force pathway management, a direct, rapid force can be applied to the charging handle at its strongest, most massive, location while removing any chance of damage to the activation levers or latch system.

Further, the dual activation levers feature true balanced-force activation such that activation of the handle using either lever results in a smooth, light and easy, opening of the retaining latch with no drag or hesitation. With this ambidextrous design, each activation lever moves independently of the other, biased only by a unique ultra-light spring force and not interconnected to the other lever or latch itself. Other designs mechanically interconnect the separate levers which cause drag, excessive opening force and wear to the components.

The ‘ADF’ design offers the traditional look and feel of forward mounted activation levers but adds the capability of utilizing newer manipulation techniques without fear of damaging the latch or handle. This greatly reduces the chance of damage to the host weapon’s internal components such as bolt, bolt rings, and bolt carrier as can happen when a conventional charging handle is overstressed and fails.

Both models are currently in limited series production and professional deployments. Pricing and availability have not been determined.

Polymer Injection Molding Receives US Patent For Decorative Overmolded Gunstocks

Monson MA --(Ammoland.com)- Polymer Injection Molding announced today that the US Patent Office has awarded it U.S. Patent 68,062,736 for overmolding gunstocks coated with a decorative or protective substrate.

Overmolding typically is used to enhance synthetic stocks by molding a soft, rubberlike material to areas of a gunstock that are gripped (forend and pistol grip) by shooters. Overmolding also is used to decorate stocks with contrasting colors and textures.

Overmolded gunstocks are a staple of the higher-end, value-added, synthetic gunstock market. They add value in both form (contrasting materials and color) and function (improved gripping capability). Typically, overmolding material is applied directly to a synthetic stock surface. Applying overmolding to a decorated gunstock (camo, wood grain, etc.) has proven to be extremely difficult and costly and has not been practiced widely. As a result, the value-added, overmolded stock market has been dominated by black, grey, tan or other basic, out-of-the-mold colors.

Polymer’s patented technology changes all that. Overmolding can be applied readily over camo-dipped stocks to produce the ultimate value-added synthetic stock.

According to Polymer Injection Molding President, Jim Ryan, “We’ve been overmolding plastic parts for years. Razor, toothbrush, pen and screwdriver companies all use it to add value. It was a natural for gun manufacturers to get into adding value through overmolding. We did our first overmolded stock for a gun manufacturer over ten years ago. It wasn’t long before everybody wanted to camo and overmold the same stock. That proved to be easier said than done. Masking the overmolded part makes a horrible mess and overmolding directly over camo (without our process) has big adhesion problems. We experimented for a long time before coming up with a process that worked. We overmold over camo day-in and day-out without any problem. It looks great and holds up as well as direct overmolding applications”.

Craig Dougherty, Polymer’s Director of Marketing echoed Ryan’s comments. “The ultimate added value is to decorate with camo and overmold the grip areas with a complementary color. We’ve done a lot of basic black over camo but overmolded tan, grey and green grips really punch it up. Des Moines, Iowa – -(Ammoland.com)- What an amazing year 2011 has been!

Since this is our final WebBench for the year, we wanted to take a little time to review just how the year has gone… and what we expect to see happen in the upcoming year, 2012.

Well, we would have to say 2011 was the year for home defense and personal protection firearms with their related accessories and equipment.

With the of expansion of concealed carry through all the states – except for Illinois, which we understand is working on the issue [and New Jersey which will have to be sued into submission] – this interest in self-protection has fueled much of the firearms sales, training, and accessorizing. When you layer over that the really tough economic times that have been thrust upon us, you get a tsunami of new and re-engaged firearm owners in America.

Falling Crime Rates
The amazing impact of all of this is that crime has fallen nationally for the 5th straight year in a row. So, the realization that more and more people are ready to protect themselves – and are equipped and properly trained to do so – has had an amazing effect on those heretofore inclined to crime. Their targets of opportunity are narrowing considerably, as people become more and more intent on not being a victim. Of course, there are no numbers supporting how many potential crimes have been stopped or prevented by trained and armed citizens exercising their right of personal protection and taking control of potentially dangerous situations – and there never will be. Nor does there need to be. All we have to do is watch those crime statistics continue to fall, even in these times of cutbacks in police budgets, and we know that those of us who take personal protection seriously and get ourselves trained properly are part of the cause of these decreasing crime rates.

Of course, we must also realize this was also the year for having fun out at the range – with tactical rifles taking the lead, and all the building/rebuilding, accessorizing and tinkering you can do with these great guns and calibers.

There seems to be no end to what you can do if you’ve a mind to do it with these guns, and we’ve seen some mighty innovative things come out of this particular venue.

Women Shooters
Another continuing trend is the amazing increase in the number of women taking part in the shooting sports. The gals are discovering that not only is it a lot of fun to go out to the range and shoot, but they are competing in more and more events. And they’re getting their friends, kids and partners involved if it wasn’t their guy who got them there in the first place. I love it, and I’m happy to see the woman in my life getting into shooting. It’s one of the things a couple can do together for fun, or even serious competition if they’ve a mind to do so.

Three Gun
Another huge growth factor this year is the increase in the various types of competitions and the huge growth in attendance we’ve seen at some of them. Coming to mind first, of course, is the proliferation of 3-gun matches. Lots of places, some wonderfully creative stages, and more and more of these matches being held. They are lots of fun, and the necessity of becoming proficient with 3 different firearms not only makes them more challenging – but also easier to screw up. This type of competition has practical applications for self protection…the different scenarios of the stages and the stress of competition really start to build a person’s skills. We believe the growth of shooting at the range has actually surpassed the growth of golf. Think I saw these numbers somewhere, but of course in putting this WebBench together I can’t find a source now.

Well, we can do the old political thing about “if you say it loud enough and long enough, everybody’s gonna believe it“, and just make it so!

SO FOR 1212, what do we see coming down the pike? Hate to be stuck in a rut here, but we all agree that it basically is going to be a repeat of 2011 for tactical rifles, the AR’s and clones and calibers. And more people shooting for the sheer pleasure of shooting and tinkering and fiddling with their guns. But, most importantly of all, 2012 is definitely going to be another year for personal protection, self-defense firearms and the training and accessories that make this all work… and, of course, ammunition!

2012 Election
Let’s look at it – we know 2012 will be heavily influenced by the major election coming in November. We know the gun issue may not get top billing because of the huge potential to do damage to one of the major parties. But, it definitely will be a sub-plot that plays out in the polls due to the enormous impact of voters watching out for their firearms ownership, personal protection and Second Amendment rights. We know that tensions in the Middle East are not going to go away – not in our lifetimes anyway. And the potential threat of terrorists’ activities on our shores further fuels serious thinking about the need for personal protection. We know the economy, the massive debt and housing crisis, and unemployment cannot be cured by election time – or for that matter even for some time after.

Ammunition
All of these issues put stress on our cities and citizens and everyone concerned with their own personal safety and their access to ammunition – the one expendable part of the personal protection equation. Ammo’s one thing we all run out of, given enough time, so it will be a big selling item in ’12, and we truly expect for the foreseeable future. The issues hanging over 2012 are not curable in just one year – not a one of them – so our projection goes well through 2012 and likely further.

It will most assuredly be another year for the growth of ammunition sales. An astronomical year of ammunition sales. You want it, and we’ve got it. How could it be any better?

The introduction of double action autos, double stack magazines, and polymer frames hasn’t substantially effected the venerable single stack, single action 1911; it just keeps rolling along. Each generation of shooters seems to relearn the same lessons the previous generation did.

They try the rest and then hear the siren song of the original.

What makes the 1911, at its 100th birthday, such a perennial favorite? Is there some magic in its design? What is in its makeup that mesmerizes generation after generation of shooters? It is by no means a beautiful pistol, nor is it a particularly natural pointer. It’s slab-sided, blunt nosed, and kicks entirely too much in its .45 ACP caliber for many. Yet, year after year, it stays on top of the heap in sales of guns and most of all in sales of accessories.

In truth, I think we love the .45 more for what it can be than what it is. Out of the box accuracy has been questionable enough that an entire industry has grown up around making it better. It is the business backbone of most handgun makers, Custom Pistolsmiths, parts manufacturers, parts sellers, gunsmiths and tinkers all over the nation. Open any catalog dealing with the shooting sports and you are bound to find accessories or parts for the 1911, most of them claiming to improve some function of the gun.

If money were no object, and it always is, we might all send off our favorite 1911 to a custom pistolsmith to turn it into the handgun of our dreams, and they would do it too. There is no shortage of Pistolsmiths that have made their reputation and living off of “old slab sides”.

Unfortunately, many of us have a hard enough time squirreling away the money to buy the pistol and a milti-thousand dollar trip to a custom gunsmith just isn’t in the cards for us. Does this mean we are stuck with a stock, out of the box pistol? No, not at all. One of the things that make the 1911 so popular is the ease of changing stock parts for custom parts. If you can disassemble the pistol and clean it you can modify it to look like a custom gun right on your kitchen table or workbench.

The question is, can you also make it shoot like one?
A trip through the Brownells catalog will provide the average gun owner with enough replacement custom parts to keep him busy and broke for years to come. Is there any one thing you can do without the help of a gunsmith to substantially improve the guns performance. A new trigger will not improve your trigger pull by itself. A new sear might but it is in the interaction of the parts that the professional gunsmith works his magic and makes his living. So, if we are on a budget and can’t afford to pay a gunsmith to work his magic on our gun are there any drop-in parts that we can buy and simply install that will improve accuracy?

1911 Auto "Group Gripper" Guide Rod & Plug

To answer that question we first must understand what a gunsmith does to make a 1911 shoot more accurately. Probably the most important thing to consider in shrinking the 1911’s groups is in the alignment of the barrel to the slide. After all the sights are on the slide and if the barrel comes to rest in a different location every time in relation to those sights, no amount of sight improvement, perfection of alignment by the shooter, or crisp light trigger pull will make it shoot to the same place. The gunsmiths answer to this predicament is to tighten the slide, precisely fit the barrel bushing and link, smooth out and lighten the trigger pull, and be sure that the barrel returns to the same place every time. That takes talent, training, and know how, something you and I probably don’t have, if we did, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. But, can some of those wonderful Gunsmithing catalogs offer us something we can install that will do that job for us? One product seemed to address the areas we are concerned with and I thought a little testing was in order.

Wilson Combat (2234 CR 719 Berryville AR 72616) makes a “Group Gripper” Guide rod and plug that has both a two piece full length guide rod to help in locating the slide as well as a spring loaded lever that engages a special link. The two parts work together to put upward pressure on the back of the barrel and force it up into the locking lugs. I found this little Gem in the Brownells Catalog under part number 965-203-001AD for around $50. This is a part that just might let the amateur achieve some of the fit that it takes a lot of hard Gunsmithing to get with standard or custom parts.

I started with my 1911 parts gun. It has a stock Colt Barrel and slide with the standard spring guide and solid bushing all on an Essex frame. This is very typical of the entry-level guns you might find at a local Gunshow. Nothing special here but all the potential every 1911 has that seems to draw us to them. I took the gun to the range along with a borrowed Ransom rest and an assortment of ammo. The first thing was to see what kind of accuracy this gun would deliver and then install the “Group Gripper” to see what effect this product might have on group size.

Using a Remington 185 Grain Jacketed Hollowpoint factory load and two handloads with 230 Grain Round Nose Lead bullets, one with 4 Grains of Bullseye and the other with 5.3 Grains of Unique I put the 1911 and various combinations of parts through their paces. Shooting was all done at 50 feet using a Ransom Rest. I started with the factory link and solid bushing and the groups with the Remington ammo ran from 2 to 3 inches with an average of 2.87 inches. The Bullseye load shot consistent 3” groups, and the Unique load was very inconsistent printing groups from 2.25 to over 4 inches.

Installing the Wilson Group Gripper I got some real surprises. The Remington Factory ammo groups shrank to an average of 1.5 inches, the Bullseye load printed into 2 inches and even the Unique load settled into 2.25 inches for an overall average of 1.91 inches for all targets. Several things became evident as I looked over the stack of targets. The Remington Factory load shot well printing groups from a best of 1.5 inches with the “Group Gripper” to 3 inches with the factory bushing and link. The average group with this ammo for all targets shot was 2.05 inches. The most finicky load was the Unique handload with the smallest group running 2.25 inches and the largest some ugly 4 inchers and an average for all targets of 2.98 inches. Bullseye was absolutely consistent shooting 2-3” groups over and over regardless of the combination of parts used.

So, what have we proved? Can we turn a stock gun into a tack driver with the simple addition of a couple of off the shelf parts? Unfortunately, no, we can’t make that 1911 shoot them all into one hole, but the addition of Wilson’s “Group Gripper” did improve the groups. From an average of 2.87 inches with the factory bushing and link to an average of 1.91 inches with nothing more than the installation of the “Group Gripper” while maintaining 100% reliability. That is a substantial improvement for an outlay of $50 and nothing more than the installation of a couple of parts. The fact that those parts can be installed by any shooter with normal hand tools and no training or special knowledge make it one of those sleepers that doesn’t get much press but actually work. Mine is staying in my gun, I think it’s one of the best investments in an accuracy improving product I’ve ever made.

No wonder so many folks love their 1911’s. With a Colt Factory Barrel, Stock Bushing and a “Group Gripper” my thrown together parts gun shot groups that averaged just less than 2 inches with complete reliability. I know the custom pistolsmiths out there would be embarrassed if any one of the guns that came out of their shop couldn’t shoot better than that by a wide margin.

But, for those of us that aren’t trained on the complexities of accurizing a 1911 and have house payments, car payments and a family to support on regular jobs, here is something we can afford that really makes a difference and, we can install it ourselves.

There is justification for this slight, the primary reason being that nearly nine out of ten adults are right handed. Add in the long held negative stereotypes (‘sinister’ is derived from the Latin word meaning “left”) and you’ll understand why our “right thinking, wrong handed” shooters have been neglected.

The industry is largely transcending both superstition and lousy training protocols, such as forcing everyone to fight or shoot as right handed. Add in the realization that proper use of cover may require a shooter to be left handed.

But Guess what? Incoming doesn’t care what your preference is.

Despite its earned reputation as a good combat rifle, the M16-series remains one of the only modern designs still in wide spread use that is not ambidextrous. An obvious problem here is the magazine catch. The design of the release is ergonomic for a righty, but not so much for the southpaw.

HISTORY
The AR-15 lower receiver has remained relatively unchanged through the first 50 years or so of its existence. A few tweaks have been made over the years to provide reinforcement or protective fencing, but no one really varied much from the “mil-spec” forging design.

A few years ago, Magpul introduced what I still believe to be the nicest lower receiver design to date. Made from aluminum billet (essentially a raw block of aluminum) vs. a forging meant that the manufacturer had more opportunity to vary the design outside the constraints of that preformed forging. These receivers were quickly sold via pre-order lists, and despite the demand for them, their production was very limited. Magpul never got into the lower receiver business due to liability insurance reasons, and their lowers disappeared into collector’s safes.

Back in the Summer of 2008, AR15.com bought the “rights” to the Magpul lower design with the intent to produce these the same year. However, we fought a long battle as one manufacturer after another promised to make them for us, and failed to deliver. The reason for the most part had to do with the presidential election of 2008. With the threat of an Obama win and the sure to follow ban on “assault weapons”, every manufacturer jumped into manufacturing overdrive with their own products, and so ours fell off the schedule. The eventual election of our current president did nothing to help us get on a schedule, and we approached no less than 4 major manufacturers in that time.

Finally, in the Fall of 2010, after the ban failed to materialize and as the gun industry was feeling the impact of all that excess manufacturing inventory, we saw the light at the end of the tunnel. We were given a window for our lowers, and we were assured we would have them in time for the Holidays. Then that schedule slipped to mid December, then to SHOT 2011 (January), and eventually, we received the first batch in March of 2011.

Our lifetime members got a first shot at our lowers, with the first product being delivered on April 1, 2011. With the recent sale of Magpul lowers reaching $3000+, we wanted to take advantage of the date and the “soft” roll out of the product as we prepared parts, process, and a new manufacturing environment.

So despite the fact that it’s been nearly 3 years in the making, during which just about everyone else has released a billet lower of their own, we are finally glad to announce that ours are here. Perhaps a bit late to the party, but as they say “Things that were hard to bear are sweet to remember”, and we’re proud of our final product. We firmly believe that it is the finest lower receiver in the marketplace, and that is a result of all of the different component manufacturers that we’ve worked with.

Before we get into those, let’s go through the brief list of features on the receiver itself.

FEATURES

• Magazine well – aggressively flared for easier loading, and with a textured front
• Markings – Bolt Face Logo is milled rather than outlined, and other than the company name below it, all text is on the right side of the magazine well. We chose to mark these 5.56mm vs. ‘multi’ to differentiate the 5.56 platform vs. the 7.62 platform to come later. Also, FIRE selector pictograms on both sides are at 68 degrees vs. 90 degrees to support both 45 and 90 degree selectors.
• Trigger guard – integral “Magpul” style vs. the often seen ’round’ version to maintain the clean lines
• Roll Pins – there are no roll pins required in the assembly of this lower; the trigger guard is built in, and the bolt catch/release assemblies both use a threaded pin
• Takedown pin – comes with a threaded takedown pin detent spring channel so your takedown pin detent and spring remain in place when the stock is removed
• Ambi-Bolt release – receiver features a bolt release on the right hand side, and this lever includes the AR15.com name

COMPONENTS
Our lowers are being sold as complete assemblies, with a number of selectable options. We are doing this in order to leverage a number of the components that work well together, limit the number of components required to be kept in inventory, as well as to ensure the highest level of performance. We understand that there are lower cost alternatives out there, and while that market is saturated, we wanted to present an alternative that requires no upgrading. We may extend the available configurations in the future based on user demand, so we welcome your feedback.

Trigger
Our goal in selecting a trigger was to offer a solution for the typical user; a 90% case if you will. We chose the Geissele Automatics Super 3 Gun trigger with a slightly heavier spring and a laser etched BFL on the hammer. This trigger is what I would consider a “fast” trigger; it allows for quick follow-up shots as typically used in a defensive, combat, or simulated environment such as dynamic training and competition.

Selector
For the selector, we went with a Battle Arms Development Short Throw ambi selector. This is the first lower receiver manufactured specifically to accommodate the ST or 45 degree selector. With the various levers available for this selector, a user can customize their setup exactly the way they want it. We ship with a standard lever and short lever, but B.A.D. offers a policy unmatched by any other manufacturer to exchange your levers for any other available choice, and they will ship it to you before you return it so you can try it and make sure you are making the right decision. Combining the 45 degree selector with the modified S3G trigger means this lower allows you to go from a ready position with your weapon on safe to engaging a target with multiple rounds, and back to safe faster than any other production AR lower. It may take a bit to get used to, but once you do, you’ll wonder how we’ve put up with a 90 degree design for so long. If for any reason you cannot use a 45 degree selector, the lower is compatible with a 90 degree selector.

Norgon Ambi Mag Release
Rounding out the ambidextrous controls is the Norgon Mag Release. What you end up with is a lower receiver with controls on both sides for mag release, and above those for the bolt release. This means that whether you’re left handed or right, or you train shooting from both sides, your controls are in the same place regardless of which hand is manipulating them. A true ambi-lower for those environments where obstacles do not always allow you to shoot from your “strong” side.

Grip
We chose the Magpul MIAD grips for all builds, and these are available in black, OD, and FDE to match the selected stock. All parts and accessories (for this and all components) are included with your lower. This means you can change out any of the inserts if you so desire.

Stocks
Stocks are the main option in configuring your lower. We currently are supporting 3 models, all from Magpul, and some with color choices. Once again, if demand dictates, we can expand this offering.

CTR
The CTR is a great choice for a lightweight fighting carbine, and we offer it in black, OD, and FDE (MIAD grip will match your stock color selection). The CTR stock comes with a 6-position anti-tilt receiver extension featuring drainage holes, and your choice of lower receiver back-plate/sling attachment point. The choices here include a Magpul ASAP, Noveske QD, and Black Widow NoMar plate.

UBR
The UBR is a heavy collapsible stock featuring a fixed cheek piece, storage compartment, QD mount points, and the ability to set a preset open position. Both the storage compartment and the QD mount points can be reversed for LH shooters, or the compartment can be removed altogether. This stock is only available in black right now, but we can order other colors, and expand the offerings if the demand is there.

PRS
The PRS stock is perhaps the finest non-collapsible stock made, and features length of pull adjustment was well as cheek height adjustments. This stock is a great fit for a longer-range rifle, or for states where the collapsible stocks have been banned, but it is seeing more and more use in 3-gun competition.

CONCLUSION
So there you have it- an official announcement as well as a short description of what we’ve put into our lowers in time, labor, features, and parts. As the AR-15 platform has evolved over the years through numerous initiatives, we feel this product offers the most advanced components available today. This is not only a great looking receiver, but one that is highly functional in a way that may make you leave your other lowers in the safe more often.
