MANDEVILLE, LA --(Ammoland.com)- The pistol many consider the highest achievement of the genius gun designer John Browning — more popular now than when created more than a century ago – stars this week on Gun Talk, the action-packed television series airing on the VERSUS cable network.

“What other consumer product can you think of,” said show host Tom Gresham, “that has been in continuous use – basically unchanged – for 100 years? It’s amazing. It’s pure genius.”

For the episode about the 100th birthday of the .45 auto, Gun Talk crews traveled to Alabama to visit with firearms instructor Tiger McKee, who wrote “The Book of Two Guns,” a treatment about the 1911 and the AR-15 rifle.

Gresham and crew also went to Gunsite, in Arizona, where Col. Jeff Cooper proclaimed the 1911 to be the best fighting handgun, and created a school — and a movement — that celebrates this legendary firearm to this day.

While this go-to firearm was actually created before the year 1911, the U.S. Army formally adopted it on March 29, 1911, earning it the name M1911, or Model 1911.

As the standard- issue military sidearm until 1985, the 1911 aided soldiers in WWI, WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam War.

Still used by military, law enforcement, and the general public, the popularity of the 1911 continues to grow.

It’s possible that no one really knows just how many companies manufacture 1911 pistols, as there seems be new introductions every week.

MANDEVILLE, LA --(Ammoland.com)- The FBI released its crime stats for the first half of 2010.

We have more guns, more concealed carry folks, and we are almost six years past the expiration of the stupid Clinton “assault weapon” ban.

The last two years have seen record increases in gun sales. So, with all these guns, how bad has crime gotten?

It will come as no surprise to those with more than a room-temperature IQ that crime continues to go down. According to the FBI, violent crime is down 6.2 percent over the same period in 2009, and homicide is down 7.1 percent. Further, robberies are down 10.7 percent, rapes down 6.2 percent, aggravated assaults down 3.9 percent, and burglaries dropped 1.4 percent.

Crime stats are subject to “tweaking” by police departments (who have been knows to downgrade crimes as a way of improving their performance numbers), but these are impressive numbers.

Just a touch more food for thought . . . homicides rose in the Northeast (can you say “harder to get a carry permit?”), but took a dramatic 12-percent dive in the South with expanded access to guns, like constitutional carry in Arizona.

It’s not possible to directly attribute these drops in crime to the increase in guns — there are just too many variables at work. But, we can say with absolute certainty that more ARs, more pistols, (we’ve seen two years of record gun sales), and more people carrying guns for their own protection (Alaska and Arizona removed the requirement for a permit!) has NOT resulted in an increase in violent crime or homicide.

MANDEVILLE, LA - -(AmmoLand.com)- Michael McIntosh died last weekend.

Michael wrote for Shooting Sportsman, Sporting Classics, Double Gun Journal, and other magazines.

He wrote more than two dozen books. A beautiful writer, Michael loved double guns and wingshooting with the same passion he showed for life with. He was 66. I first met Michael almost 40 years ago in Missouri.

I was still a student at Mizzou, and he was barely older. We fished for trout. Through the years Michael became a giant in the world of wingshooting and especially the minutia of double guns.

His books are simply wonderful. Just this past week I’ve been reading (for the fourth or fifth time) Shotguns and Shooting, a delightful, simple, and easy to read treatment. McIntosh’s writing was influenced by that of John Madson, who may be the finest writer of outdoor tales we’ve ever had. John didn’t do it with flourishes or tangled syntax, but with the simple, declarative sentence. It was in reading Madson’s work that I learned the strength of verbs and the weakness of adjectives.

Michael Michael wrote for Shooting Sportsman, Sporting Classics, Double Gun Journal, and other magazines.

Michael excelled at spare verbiage. Just a few words. Always the right ones. Both Madson and McIntosh were gentlemen. Michael was…complex…and flawed. Why is it that great writers so often are? He was an incomparable companion on a trout stream, hunting lodge, or the line on a driven shoot. He was a master teacher.

Only a few words for the student — the right words.

If you enjoy shooting, or guns, or fine writing, may I suggest that you get a copy of one of Michael’s books. After learning of his death, I opened Shotguns and Shooting, and spent some time with my friend. Fortunately, you can too.

Just pull one of his books from the shelf, and there he is. What a wonderful gift.

Natchitoches, La - -(AmmoLand.com)- Every shooter wants to be better. More accurate. Break more targets. Reduce the time on a stage of action shooting.

So, how do you do it?

Sure, practice is important. Lots of trigger time will make a big difference… Getting instruction will fast-track your improvement. But getting into competition is a surefire way of getting better.

Competition is the engine driving improvement in everything: business, sports, dating, engineering, and certainly shooting. Shooting by yourself at the range can take you only so far. Working with an instructor always makes you better. Getting into competitive shooting, though, gives you purpose, and with purpose you have motivation to do everything better.

If you are a shotgunner, try trap, skeet or sporting clays. Rifle shooters have metallic silhouette, traditional high power and rimfire events, international style shooting, long range competitions, and more. Handgunners can go all the way from bullseye to international (Olympic style), to practical police to Steel Challenge to the action pistol events such as USPSA and IDPA.

For a bucket of fun, there’s three-gun competition, where you shoot handgun, rifle (usually AR-15 platform), and shotguns. This is defensive-style run and gun shooting, so don’t expect wingshooting to play much a part.

Why competition?

Even if you are just into a local shooting league for fun, competing drives the focus. You pay more attention when shooting in competition. You develop the ability to maintain your focus over a long string of shooting. That might be a run in IDPA – taking a few seconds — or a 250-bird shootoff in trap. When you compete, you also begin to practice with purpose. You’ll find others you can shoot with, and through that, you learn techniques which make you better.

You also shoot at events with people who are much better than you are. Don’t underestimate the value of watching top shooters in action. They move, shoot and think differently, and if you pay attention, you’ll learn. Besides, there are no secrets. Other competitors usually are quick to share ideas and tips.

Every shooting discipline has an organization that controls competition. Google is your friend, here. Put in “action shooting competition” or “sporting clays” and you’ll find the organizers. Add your city or state to the search and you’ll find events and locations near you.

You know what the hardest part is?

Showing up the first time. Here’s the key to making it easy: Call the shooting range, talk to the manager, and say, “Hi, I’m new at this. How do I get started?”

That’s it. Magic. If it’s pistol, rifle, shotgun, or all three, you just opened the door to being a better shooter. You also began the process of making friends with a lot of people who share your passions and your values.

Oh, one other thing. Many shooting sports have classifications, so you won’t be shooting against the world champions (even though you may be at the same events). There are classifications for your shooting ability and even your age. As you improve, you’ll move up to a higher classification. Sounds complicated, but the governing bodies of the sports handle it all for you.

Find a range, find a sport, make the call, and get into competitive shooting.

Alan Gura, of Gura & Possessky, P.L.L.C, has now argued and won both landmark gun-rights cases brought before the Supreme Court – District of Columbia v. Heller in 2008, and most recently, McDonald v. Chicago. “The Second Amendment is a normal part of the Bill of Rights – that much is the essential rule of McDonald v. City of Chicago,” writes Gura on scotusblog.com.

Alan Gottlieb, Founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, worked closely with Alan Gura on both the McDonald and Heller cases, and the two are planning more.

“We are already preparing to challenge other highly-restrictive anti-gun laws across the country. Our objective is to win back our firearms freedoms one lawsuit at a time,” says Gottlieb.

Indeed, Gottlieb has already filed a lawsuit in North Carolina.

U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe, R-OK, has recently introduced S.3388, the Service Member Second Amendment Protection Act of 2010. The bill prohibits the Department of Defense from requiring the registration of privately owned firearms, ammunition, or other weapons beyond what is already required by state and federal law.

“This bill will prevent current and potential Second Amendment violations for those serving and employed by the Department of Defense,” says Inhofe.

NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre stops in to discuss H.R. 5175, The Disclose Act, which has been making headlines as of late. The Disclose Act deals with campaign finance and disclosure of information from organizations that donate to political campaigns within a certain time near an election. The NRA saw H.R. 5175 as an assault on freedom of political speech, and fought the bill. The most recent amendment excludes groups based on certain criteria, including size and date of inception. Because of their opposition, the NRA is now just one of the groups excluded from this act.

Another author making his debut on Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk this Sunday is Attorney Mitch Vilos, a trial lawyer in both Utah and Alabama. Vilos’ law practice “focuses on primarily two areas of law, representing accident victims and handling criminal cases involving self-defense and weapons charges.” As a passionate advocate for self-defense and the law, Vilos has written three books on Utah Gun Laws, and has most recently released Self-Defense Laws of All 50 States.

Natchitoches, La - -(AmmoLand.com)- The Brady Campaign — which used to be called Handgun Control, Inc. — has claimed for some time that it had a half-million members.

Not all that impressive compared to the NRA, which has almost four million. But, 500,000 is a lot of people.

If it’s true. But, it looks as though it’s not.

Now that they are on hard financial times (donations are way down), the Brady Campaign has offered its member list out for rent.

(Wait, when you join, doesn’t it say that the Brady Bunch will not sell or rent your name???)

In order to offer the list to companies, the Brady Campaign must, of course, tell how many names are on it. After all, the companies which rent the list will count them, right?

So, it finally come out that the member list is not 500,000 stalwarts who want to “control” guns. It’s not even 250,000. It’s about 50,000, or only ten percent of what they have been claiming.

I guess guns aren’t the only thing they have trouble telling the truth about.

Natchitoches, La - -(AmmoLand.com)- Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk (R) Radio revisits Alaskan concealed carry law and reveals one big announcement this Sunday, June 13th, 2010. Airing live from 2PM – 5PM Eastern, Eric Croft will update Gun Talk listeners on the effects of Alaskans no longer needing to obtain a concealed carry permit.

Former Alaskan Representative Eric Croft introduced HB 102 to the Alaska Legislature in 2003, which passed and was signed by then Governor Frank Murkowski. HB 102 essentially adopted the “Vermont Law”, stipulating that Alaskans 21 or older that were legally allowed to own a firearm or weapon no longer needed to have a concealed carry permit to carry their legal weapon of choice concealed.

Back when this bill was proposed, Croft said, “I object to the government putting a precondition on that constitutional right (to carry a weapon). I’m presumed to be a responsible citizen until proven otherwise.”

Another reason to enact HB 102 was the fact that many weapons fell under the old conceal carry law, not just handguns. The law included rifles and shotguns in the backseat of a car, and even sheathed knives, if the person was not out hunting.

Paul Valone, president of Grass Roots North Carolina, will discuss how the Marriott Charlotte City Center put up “no guns” signs during a gun rights event in the hotel, making those who were otherwise legally carrying guns criminals. Valone says that despite the hotel chain’s claim that it has removed the signs (after stating that it has a policy of not allowing firearms into any of its hotels), the signs have not come down

“You have to love it when the governor of a major state goes running without his security detail because he carries his own security in the form of a legal firearm. It’s a good thing he had that pistol, and he knew how to use it. Governor Perry is a strong proponent of the Second Amendment and the individual rights of gun ownership.”

U.S. Congressman Brad Ellsworth of Indiana makes his first appearance on Gun Talk Radio to discuss the amendment he introduced to the National Defense Authorization Bill. This amendment would prohibit the U.S. military from destroying brass cartridge cases after the ammunition has been shot on U.S. bases. This “once fired” brass (read more on the destruction on brass) often is sold for scrap currently, which results in less revenue for the Department of Defense.

It also eliminates millions of rounds of fired cases which can be reloaded and sold through legal channels — something that can help with the ammo shortages law enforcement agencies as well as recreational and competitive shooters have experienced over the last few years.

“As a gun owner myself and a former sheriff,” said Rep. Ellsworth, “I know that these cases are mostly used for marksmanship training and competition and law enforcement agencies. Authorizing the military to re-sell these casing is a win-win for hunters and marksman and the Defense Department.”
