Plymouth, Minnesota -–(AmmoLand.com)- Avid Design TM, a new brand that focuses on developing specialized tools for outdoor enthusiasts, introduces The Gun Tool – a multi-tool designed for rifles and shotguns. The Gun Tool (MSRP: $24.99) combines 18 of the most commonly used long gun tools into one compact ergonomic frame.

After extensive research, Avid’s design team determined that shooters and hunters had few options for in-the-field gun maintenance tools.

“There are a lot of multi-tools out there, but this is the first one designed specifically for shooters,” claims Bob Meinert, Avid Product Manager.

“Our original goal was to build a rock solid tool to carry to the range or to the hunting camp – and we did that.

We have gotten emails from hunters telling us about how useful The Gun Tool has been for them. What we also found is that it works great on the bench. In fact, it’s a great tool for gunsmiths to keep handy as their go-to tool because it combines so many tools into one frame.”

One innovative feature that stands out on the Gun Tool is its patent pending universal choke wrench. Most traditional universal choke wrenches feature a rounded edge that slips in the choke slots – making it very difficult to exert sufficient torque to loosen a stubborn choke tube. The Gun Tool’s choke wrench features a unique step design that securely penetrates into the slots of a tube and allows you to work with every gauge from the slender .410 to the mighty 10.

The Gun Tool also includes a pin punch to take down trigger assemblies for thorough cleaning, multiple Torx and Allen wrenches that fit the most common rings and bases, magnetic bit driver and bits , internal bit storage, a scope windage/elevation adjuster, and a claw-point blade to help you open a case of clays or cut a lift rope for your tree stand.

The Gun Tool

Gun Tool Specs
Field or range, this is the most versatile and handy combo a shooter can carry.

The Gun Tool is loaded with 18 of the most frequently used long gun tools, including five Torx and Allen wrenches and four magnetic hex drive bits, in a compact and ergonomic folding frame.

A stout claw-point blade is ideal for ammo boxes, and the pin punch makes quick work of disassembly. The multi-function choke wrench fits most tubes from .410 to 10 ga. and doubles as a scope windage and elevation adjuster.

A durable stainless steel and grip-coat polymer frame neatly houses every implement. Unlike handyman multi-tools, the Gun Tool is built from the specific needs, insights and frustrations of hunters and shooters. No tool fits you better.

Brownells.com - -(AmmoLand.com)- There’s a bit of relief for the shortage of AR-15 barrels, at least at Brownells. The Iowa-based supplier of gunsmithing tools and firearm accessories has just released their own, 16″ M-4-style barrel for the popular rifle.

The AR-15/M16/M4 Carbine Barrel (#080-000-681) is made of 4140 chrome moly steel, hardened to Rc 26-33 and stress relieved. It’s 16″ long with a 1 in 7 twist and ½”-28 threads for a flash hider. M4 feed ramps provide reliable feeding into the 5.56 NATO chamber. A dark gray, Parkerized finish helps prevent rust.

“Brownells is committed to stocking the parts our customers need. When we see people having trouble getting a certain product, we work with our existing suppliers, or find new sources, to make those parts available,” said company President Pete Brownell.

No front sight housing/gas block or flash hider/muzzle brake is supplied. That lets the user select the exact components they want without paying for parts that will only end up in a drawer full of other unused pieces.

Cottonwood, Ariz. - -(AmmoLand.com)- The LaserLyte Kryptonyte .50 BMG green laser cartridge bore tool (K-50) helps sight-in .50 caliber rifles quickly and economically. Getting the user on paper the first shot, (3-4 inches from center at 100 yards), the K-50 fits inside the chamber and when the bolt is closed the laser automatically activates. The daylight-visible 532-nanometer laser creates a dot that can be seen up to 100 yards with the naked eye.

Manufactured to the highest degree of .50 BMG match grade tolerances, each unit is checked with LaserLyte’s custom-made gauge. The K-50 is powered by one CR2 battery (commonly used in digital cameras) that provides 1.5 hours of continuous on.

The extreme accuracy of the K-50 coupled with the high visibility of a green laser make this the must-have bore tool for any serious .50 BMG shooter. Whether it is initial sight-in or checking to see if the rifle is still on target, both can be achieved with time and ammo savings. MSRP $199.95.

Fort Wayne, IN - -(AmmoLand.com)- Sinclair International has just introduced their Premium Neck Turning Tool Kit (#NT4000) with everything the reloader needs to get started turning the outside of their case necks for uniformity. Making every round identical is a key step in achieving the greatest accuracy from your handloads. Neck turning is an important step in the process.

The kit includes the Premium Neck Turning Tool with cutter and handle, one Expander Body, an Expander Mandrel, and a Turning Mandrel.

Company President, Bill Gravatt said, “We wanted to make precision neck turning easy for anyone to do, without an elaborate, expensive set up, and our new Sinclair Kits accomplish those goals very well.”

With every case having uniform neck wall thickness, all of your cases will release bullets equally. The result will be more uniform case expansion, uniform chamber pressure, and better accuracy down range! This is just another example of a technique borrowed from the competitive benchrest community to help all shooters improve the consistency of their handloads.

Hardened, steel tool reliably and easily removes broken cases from AR-type or any other firearm chambered for the .223/5.56 NATO or .308/7.62 NATO cartridges.

Exclusive, threaded, two-piece design is adjustable for overall length, so the tool completely engages the rim of the case mouth; cannot slip through or strip out. Very simple to use, drop the broken shell extractor into the chamber directly inside the broken case.

Allow the bolt to close so the extractor engages the rim of the tool and draw back the bolt to open the chamber. The broken case will eject along with the broken shell extractor.

Jefferson City, MO – -(AmmoLand.com)- CJ Weapons founder Jon Morgan has developed a 21st Century bore guide for use in the .308 caliber semi- and fully-automatic AR styled rifles. The innovative product is designed to protect a guns’ chamber and muzzle.

The AR-308 Bore Stay is approximately 10 inches long and is made from a solid piece of CNC plastic. It does not use O-rings or other parts and does utilize the same locking mechanism as the bolt system. The AR-308 Bore Stay locks in place and does not slip during firearm cleaning.

The AR-308 Bore Stay solvent port allows additional solvent to be added to the cleaning brush allowing the cleaning brush to remain in the weapon.

CJ’s 5.56 Bore Stay served as the AR-308’s base of design but Morgan updated the product for the new design. “The AR-308 Bore Stay is a single, one piece unit,” Morgan said. “This is a state-of-the-art product that I developed for all the .308 caliber shooters out there.”

“I designed the 5.56 Bore Stay about 10 years ago and the AR-308 just last year,” said Morgan. “We took a good product and using some of the new cutting-edge technologies available made it even better.”

The AR-308 Bore Stay is available for $24.95 on CJ’s website at www.cjweapons.com.

CJ Weapons Accessories is a supply house for military, law enforcement, sportsmen and collectors. CJ Weapons specializes in in-house design, cleaning and shooting accessories for military weapons. More information is available on its website at www.cjweapons.com.

About:
CJ Weapons founder Jon Morgan is a developer and designer of innovative weapon accessories. Morgan utilizes his 30 years experience in the U.S. Marine Corps and his tours-of-duty in Somalia and Desert Storm as the basis for many of the products he creates.

“One of the most difficult aspects of fitting a recoil pad has always been the final fitting of pad to wood, because it is so darned easy to hit the stock with the disk, sanding strip or the file, and ruin the finish. So when we saw this Recoil Pad Fitting Jig, we knew it would be an instant success with pro gunsmiths as it removes all risk of stock damage.”

England – -(AmmoLand.com)- Long-range rifle shooting doesn’t get much more demanding than F Class, with its half MOA V bull – just five inches in diameter at 1000 yards. Taking your rifle out of the slip, setting-up, assessing the wind, making that vital scope adjustment then squeezing off the first round is always a bit of a ’shot in the dark’ for me – desperately hoping that the first sighter is at least on target, otherwise your whole shoot could be compromised. My home club gives out a special key-ring for first shot hits in the V bull – we don’t give out many!

Of course, F Class is just a bit of fun and shooting does indeed get a lot more demanding – ask any soldier or police firearms officer. Often, one shot is all they will get – no sighters, no wind-flags, no butt-crew spotting your fall of shot.

Even though we have our sight-settings from last time we shot, our ammunition is identical and we know the range, why is that first shot always a gamble? What could possibly go wrong? The answer? Plenty!

TAS Ballistics Calculator

How many external forces influence our shot? Gravity and the wind are the obvious ones and the most influential. It doesn’t take much to blow a bullet several feet at 1000 yards. What else? Temperature of course. Temperature affects velocity and thus elevation. In the UK we are lucky in that we don’t get massive temperature shifts from summer to winter but sufficient to make a difference of maybe 5 or 6 MOA – enough to have your shot go over the top of the target.

There are a few other things as well – humidity for example. Difficult to measure so difficult to allow for. Elevation (above sea level) is another and of course the angle you shoot at, though this doesn’t become significant until we get to serious uphill or downhill shots, which we are unlikely to encounter on formal ranges. We also have a few other influences which will contribute to your frustration in attempting to hit that five-inch V bull at 1000 yards. If you have a right-hand barrel-twist, a wind from the left will tend to lower the impact point and conversely, a wind from the right will lift the shot.

Most of us now have access to ballistic software and these computer programmes can be very useful, especially if you have a new rifle. Providing you know the muzzle velocity, the bullet’s BC and the wind strength and direction, any half-decent programme should get you on target even at 1000 yards. Trouble is, our computer isn’t on the firing-point, it’s usually at home. Yes, you may be lucky to own one of those dinky palm-tops and if you load it up with a good programme you can input many of the aforementioned factors and make that first shot a bit less of a gamble.

For the professional shooter, like the military sniper, such devices are available but if electronics are involved, moisture will inevitably be a problem or even sand and of course it’s fragile. What would we give for a device which was portable, robust, weatherproof and would give us all this information and not rely on battery power?

Amazingly, I have such a device in my hand at this very moment. I’m about to shoot my 22 Dasher at 900 yards – something I’ve never done before. I normally use it out to 600 yards but today we are a good bit further back. I’ve just taken the air-temperature (51 degrees F) and wind-speed (13 mph) with my Kestrel meter and made a good stab at the wind direction – about 30 degrees over my right shoulder. I’m 1000 feet above sea level and I’m shooting up-hill about three degrees.

I need to wind-on 19.2 MOA according to my TAS calculator and my wind adjustment, for a 13 mph wind at 30 degrees is worth a tad over 4 MOA. No adjustments are needed for inclination but it’s ten degrees colder than my ‘zero’ data, so I need to add 4 MOA. Let’s take the shot.

It would be a miracle if I had hit the V bull but it’s a good solid hit and I’m quite impressed. No batteries, no wires, no phone, nothing to get wet, frozen, baked or broken in the TAS. Can you believe it?

You want one? Sorry, it would be no good to you because this one is specifically made for me – or at least my rifle – my Stiller Predator chambered in 22 Dasher. It’s based on an 80 grain bullet with a BC of 0.420 and muzzle velocity of 3250 fps. This data was collected at 60 degrees Fahrenheit by Dougie Lorimer of Tactical Adjustment Systems (TAS) by chronographing my ammunition. In other words, it’s tailor-made for one rifle/cartridge combination and this is what separates the TAS from other such devices. The TAS is dedicated to your rifle and ammo – full stop.

Yes, you could input all the same information into any ballistics computer programme and print off a few sheets of paper. You could even laminate that paper to weatherproof it and stuff it in your gun-bag. The TAS calculator is nothing more but it is offered as a very neat and very robust package about the size of a CD which will slip into your pocket. It’s made from a very tough plastic – polycarbonate – that looks as if it would stop a bullet! OK, maybe not but you get the picture. It would certainly stand up to police or military use in any climate.

All your ballistic information is engraved on this plastic disc. The engraving is deep so it won’t wear or rub off. You can take it apart in seconds if you have to. You can wash it if you need to. You can have a disc dedicated to each of your rifles or, if you are a military or police user, one disc would serve several identical rifles using the same ammunition.

I have no idea what the British Army sniper uses to make sight-adjustments for his long shots but it can’t be better than this and it certainly can’t be more reliable, robust or quick and simple to use. I would hope that our guys have at least something as good. Similarly, every police force should issuing a TAS to its tactical rifle shooters – lives could depend on it. These guys aren’t punching holes in paper!

I have no idea what the British Army sniper uses to make sight-adjustments for his long shots but it can’t be better than this and it certainly can’t be more reliable, robust or quick and simple to use. These guys aren’t punching holes in paper!

I came across the TAS by accident. I happened to be in the right place at the right time and I assumed that as this was a police/military spec. unit that it would be totally out of the price-range of a civilian shooter. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The unit, with a dedicated disc for your own rifle and ammunition is a paltry £95 plus VAT. If you want other discs dedicated to your other rifles, they are just £35 each.

When you compare this to some of the ballistic software on sale, there is no comparison. Yes, it’s nice to play with the software on your computer in the comfort of your home but honestly, how much use is it out in the field? The TAS is with you at all times – there to use, to give you the essential information that you need to make that first shot count. For the stalker/hunter, who often needs to take those up or downhill shots, it will not only help you make your kill but make a clean kill more likely.

Have a look at the TAS website on www.globalsecuritymarketing.com and if shooting is your job or your passion then you owe it to yourself to have a closer look at this innovative device.

I’m sure many other gunsmiths do as well. The reamer is held in the chuck and the chamber end of the barrel is aligned using a live center. If the barrel has an extension that prevents the live center from reaching the chamber, an adapter that goes into the chamber is used. I place the muzzle onto the reamer and the live center into the chamber end. While holding the barrel by hand, I use the tailstock to push the barrel into the reamer. If anything gets to tight, I just let go of the barrel. (Be sure to keep fingers out of any holes.) I only tap by hand. The kink is what to do when the barrel is to long to fit between the chuck held reamer and the tailstock. My lathe is 40″ center-to-center.

Answer: You will need to hold the reamer in a collet. I measured the choke reamers and the shafts are about .650″. I then ordered a 21/32″ (.656″) collet for my lathe. Since the force applied to the reamer is so great, there was sometimes slippage of the reamer in the collet. I bored a hole on the body of the collet and pressed in a pin to hold the reamer on one of its’ flats. The collet aligns the reamer and the pin insures the reamer doesn’t turn in the collet. Since the tail end of the barrel can move on the center, any slight wobble won’t be a problem. This system gets me about 3″ more length than using the chuck to hold the reamer. The barrel shown in the photo is a 30″ Remington 1100 barrel. Also shown are the extensions I use.
Cactus Tactical – Long Range Shooting Secrets. This series of Shooting and Gun Smithing Tips is brought to you by Cactus Tactical, an AmmoLand Expert Author

Cactus Tactical

Cactus Tactical - -(AmmoLand.com)- The Small Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI) was established to standardize case and chamber specifications. These specifications insure any ammunition produced for a given cartridge will fit and function safely in any firearm chambered for the same cartridge. As with any manufacturing process there are always variations due to tool wear, equipment alignment, and material differences. SAAMI specifications are actually pretty loose, especially for chamber dimensions. All rifle barrels, bar none, have variations in their chambers, even high dollar custom barrels. Even though the barrels are “in SAAMI spec”, the variations can mean the difference of 5 minute of angle (MOA) accuracy with the same ammunition in different guns.

To overcome these variations, shooters have to tailor their own loads. Unfortunately, Reloading Manuals don’t address chamber variations because they too have to follow SAAMI specs with case dimensions, bullet seating depth, and cartridge overall length. By measuring the rifle’s chamber, reloaders can trim brass for best fit and seat bullets at optimum depth. Bullet seating depth and brass length have a profound impact on accuracy. Most chambers are cut with too much “free bore”. This dimension is the distance from the rifled bore to where the shoulder starts. The free bore is at least .025″ larger than the bullet diameter and up to .100″ deeper than needed. As the bullet jumps from the case to the bore, it has room to move laterally resulting in less than perfect bore alignment. This causes the bullet to strike the bore off center and be deformed. As the deformed bullet travels down range, it actually wobbles a little. The greater the wobble, the worse the accuracy. Compensations for chamber variations can be made in the reloading process.

Case Neck Length Gauge.

First, measure the chamber case neck length using a Case Neck Length Gauge. After you measure the case length, trim your brass .005″ shorter than the measurement. This will allow room for the brass to “grow” when fired. Recommended SAAMI trim length is usually way too short for most chambers.

Bullet Depth Gauge

Second, you need to know the exact bullet seating depth to compensate for forward bullet jump. A long established fact: the less the bullet jump, the better the accuracy. Different bullet styles, shapes, and weights, will require different seating depths. Use a Bullet Depth Gauge to determine the exact bullet seating depth for each different bullet type. The bullet should be .010″ from touching the bore. If the bullet touches the bore, chamber pressure may increase.

Once you have worked up a load, use the above techniques to improve accuracy. Case Neck Length Gauges and Bullet Depth Gauges are available from Cactus Tactical in all cartridges with .224, 7mm, and .308 diameter bullets. These tools are very easy to use and come with simple instructions. Unfortunately, they are only available for guns with direct in-line chamber access such as a bolt action, single shot, AR-15, etc.

CMMG - -(AmmoLand.com)- Fully assembled semi-auto lower receiver includes trigger group, grip, and ambi safety, and is ready for the upper, receiver extension, and buttstock of your choice. Forged from 7075 T6 aluminum alloy, for an extra margin of strength and rigidity over standard 6061 alloy receivers, before precision machining to final mil-spec dimensions. Hardcoat anodized for added strength, then Teflon® coated for outstanding resistance to scuffs, scratches, surface abrasion, and discoloration from gun oils. CMMG’s engineers designed custom fixtures for final grinding of 10 separate contact surfaces on the trigger, disconnector, and hammer to ensure a crisp, precise release. Proprietary bronze bushings on trigger and hammer pins reduce friction for a consistent, ultra-smooth pull and exceptionally fast locktime. Rounded, low-mass hammer further speeds locktime and reduces wear on contact surfaces. Trigger is function tested before lower leaves factory; works equally well in .22 LR conversions. Receiver also includes bolt release lever, mag release button, aluminum triggerguard, and A2 pistol grip already installed. A2-style pistol grip of nearly indestructible polymer has molded-in checkering for a secure grip and is impervious to humidity, temperature extremes, and most cleaning chemicals and lubricants.

SPECS: Receiver – Forged 7075 T6 aluminum, hardcoat anodized, Teflon coated, matte black. “.223/5.56mm” stamped on side of magwell. Pistol Grip – High-impact polymer, black. .154″ hammer/trigger pin holes. .250″ pivot pin holes. FFL required for purchase.

Question: I’m trying remove the gas assembly from an FN49 in 30.06. I can’t get the pin in the gas assembly out. I’m also trying to take off the gas assembly on another FN49 and have the pin out but the assembly won’t move. Which punch set would be the best to try (have already broken one punch on this) and how do I get the gas assembly off? In the firearm’s disassembly book I have, the chapter on FN49s has this in one step: take out the pin in the gas assembly and remove the gas assembly. At the moment, I have the end caps off both barrels and I want to switch the gas assemblies from one barrel to the other, both in 30.06.

Gunsmith Professional Punch Set

Answer: If you’re trying to remove the entire sight base you may need to drill out the pins and replace them for the next barrel. They do not often come out cleanly. If you are working on the gas tube that goes into the sight housing, the whole assembly could be rusted together due to corrosive ammunition used on the past. Those parts would need to be soaked in penetrating oil for a few days to get them to free up. Even then you may have to resort to drilling the pin out if there is corrosion present. As far as Gun Tool Punches go, be sure to us a starter punch in the beginning until you are sure the pin is moving. Then switch to a standard punch.

Altoona, Iowa --(TheOutdoorWire.com)- The good folks at Brownells have just announced some of the Seminars for the Gunsmith Career Fair April 17th and 18th, 2009. These events have been arranged to help gunsmiths grow their career or business.

Seminars already set include:
- Which Job Opportunity Is Right For You?
- Creating Additional Markets For Your Skills
- Marketing Your Business Through Local & Firearms Industry Media
- Generating Sales & Traffic With reloading

According to Pete Brownell, company President, “While connecting employers with employees is still the main objective, I’m really pleased with the way the seminars are shaping up, we’re making great progress toward our goal of expanding the event into a true Career Fair that will serve the gunsmiths, and entire industry.”

Other seminars by the key industry organizations, and participating employers are in development. In addition, NRA and NSSF have signed on as sponsors of the April 17th breakfast (NRA) and lunch (NSSF).

Frank Brownell, CEO told us, “Naturally we’re encouraging companies that need great employees to come, but more than that, this is a wonderful opportunity for firearms related companies that may not need help right now, to meet the folks that will be the backbone of the industry – and their customers – in the years to come.”

Employer/Exhibitor space is still available, but limited. Interested companies are encouraged to sign up today at www.gunsmithcareerfair.com , email tocareerfair@brownells.com or call Jamie Reed, 641-623-8070.

Hand Guard Removal Tool - Is a handy tool that eliminates the need for a second pair of hands when removing AR-type handguards. Simply insert the hooked end of the tool into the AR15 or M16 mag well, position handles over delta ring, and push down to compress the delta ring spring. Made of strong  ¼” (6.4mm) steel rod, with synthetic rubber coating to protect gun from surface scratches.

We like this easy to use tool. With the handguard removal tool you just remove the magazine and place the tools “hook” in the magazine well, then push down on the handguard tool to compress the spring in your delta ring, at this point you just pull out on your 1/2 of a handguard and it will pull right out and then you do the same to the other half. To reinstall or change handguards just reverse the above procedure.

November 4th - While Glock pistols don’t require many tools for disassembly, armorers and other pros use some special items to make the job easier. Brownells, the Montezuma, Iowa gunsmith supply house, has combined them all into one compact, self-storing unit, their Screwdriver Set for Glock (#080-000-408).

You get a nut driver for the front sight nut, a punch for the frame pins, one to help with magazine disassembly, a flat blade to push the mag catch spring aside and two Allen bits for various adjustable rear sights. All the “bits” fit into the full-size, hollow handle with a short shank, to keep you close to the work for maximum control.

“If you own a Glock, having the right tools to take it apart for service will make your ownership experience even better,” said Pete Brownell, company President, “this Set has just what you need, and nothing extra.”

The Screwdriver Set for Glock is one of 30,000 + items listed in Brownells easily recognized, horizontal format, Catalog #61 that has become the standard reference for gunsmiths and serious hobbyists since the company was founded in 1939.

Answers to any installation or troubleshooting questions – on Glocks or other guns, and gunsmithing processes – are available from the experienced technical services staff with a quick, toll-free call to Brownells at (800) 741-0015.

Brownells is the world’s largest supplier of firearm parts, gunsmithing tools, equipment and accessories. Stocking more than 30,000 items, the company supplies armorers, gunsmiths, and shooters worldwide. All of their products are backed by a 100% satisfaction, unconditional, lifetime guarantee.
