class="wp-caption-text">SIG SAUER

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- In nearly every course we are asked a common question: What can I do to improve?

The response is the same nearly each time. If you are not conducting dry practice, you should start now.

Dry practice is simply practicing and developing your firearms skills without live ammunition. You can train nearly every part of your firearms manipulations minus the flash and bang of the muzzle and the cycling of the action. Dry practice is—in our opinion— one of the most beneficial methods of training with your firearm.

I put together a simple routine to help develop your basic pistol manipulations. This routine is a 5-session basic dry practice routine to get you started. This routine will cover topics learned in our 101 to 104 handgun courses. I encourage you to add to this routine and develop your own consistent with your level of training; what you create is limited only by your imagination.

©2012, SIG SAUER Academy

When conducting your dry practice I recommend the following equipment:

A safe training area

Designated clear and safe weapon with 3 empty magazines

Inert training rounds (10)

Two targets

Shot timer (optional)

Your dry practice should be conducted 3-5 times per week and last no more than 20 minutes. I often work through the scheduled session and repeat if any time remains. When conducting the training, I work at 50% or less speed, focusing more on consistent, perfect practice repetitions over speed.

To get started, you will need to make your weapon clear and safe. Remove all live ammunition from the area or room in which you are practicing. Select a safe direction to point your weapon and hang your targets. Set your timer and conduct a visual and physical inspection of your weapon again. Then, perform the scheduled session. Just like any other skill development, consistent training is the key to success.

AmmoLand Gun News

Manasquan, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- New Year’s is just behind us so it’s traditionally a time to be thinking about what to resolve to do better this coming year.

Keeping fit usually tops the list of promises we make to ourselves at the start of each new year, but it is also one of the most difficult resolutions to keep up with.

A workout designed around exercises that would benefit one of your favorite hobbies might inspire more commitment. What if each repetition in the gym (or basement) added some extra punch to your overall fitness when engaging in firearms sport or training?

Building a strong core is always an important foundation with any extended use of specific muscles groups as well as for endurance and balance. Basic floor exercises including crunches, scissor kicks and other exercises that strengthen the abdominal muscles are going to be the foundation for everything else you do in your workouts. A fatigued body will rely on a strong core to ground it. But there are some exercises that pay specific attention to strengthening muscles that will be used when holding firearms out at arms’ length for long periods of time.

When I started taking more advanced shooting classes I started to think about how I could use my daily workouts to target the muscles used to sustain the long periods holding and maneuvering my firearms. I was already working with a personal trainer, Fabian Thorne at Built 2 Last Fitness (www.built-2-last.org), so we discussed how to include exercises in my training sessions to target the specific muscles used in shooting.

There are obviously many strength building exercises but here are three easy ones you can add as part of a regular program and that can offer results to reduce strain on tired muscles.

Hold both arms out straight to your sides and rotate them clockwise in small tight circles for 100 repetitions. Then do the same in counterclockwise motion. This will build strength in the muscles used when holding arms outstretched for great periods of time. Add hand weights as you increase your endurance.

In the next exercise, sit down and take a five pound dumbbell in one hand (or whatever weight is appropriate for you fitness level). Rest your wrist on the edge of your knee and move your hand up and down at the wrist. This movement will build strength in the wrists which help hold heavy objects in outstretched arms, where disproportionate weight is being held in one hand.

Balance is also as important as muscle strength when incorporating movement into training exercises. To improve balance, try alternate side forward leg lunges while holding five or ten pound dumbbells. Begin with eight repetitions on each leg. When returning to the center standing position after each forward lunge, include an arm curl and when doing lunges in the reverse direction include an arm raise as you return the leg to the center standing position. Repeating lunges several times on each leg improves balance and strength.

Generally, it can be helpful to train under the conditions you will find your mind and body subjected to in a particular situation. For example, law enforcement officers will train with firearms simulators to imitate situations where the mind will have to make a split second decision as to a threat and then take action. Training courses that teach shooting on the move and under stress are good ways to test how an individual will respond in an unusually difficult situation.

However, the best way to prepare physically is to be in the best shape possible. A regular exercise program to strengthen the core muscles, with special attention to the muscles used in shooting (as in the exercises listed above) may provide an advantage in combating muscle fatigue; for example, from holding a gun in an outstretched arm for a long period of time – possibly even hours as in police crisis situations.

If you enjoy your workouts as much as I do, then the added knowledge that the exercises you are performing may also benefit your shooting skills could give you that extra incentive to keep up the program this New Year.

(For more information on personalized sports targeted fitness programs contact Fabian <a

This is down from about 60% during the 1980s and early 1990s. The firearm suicide rate remained at just under 6 per 100,000, as it has been every year from 1999 forward. Contrary to claims made recently by some gun control advocates, firearm suicides among children are extremely uncommon, and in 2008, fell to an all-time low.

Firearm homicides (including self-defense, but excluding lawful shootings by police) declined in 2008. More recent data reported by the FBI, shows that criminal homicides declined in 2008, again in 2009, and again in 2010, to a 47-year low.

About:
Dylan Kenneson - Instructor - Sig Sauer Academy

Unfortunately for a shooter nowadays the excuse that a modern manufactured, out of the box handgun is “off” is generally not the case.

Subjects that are often overlooked or misinterpreted when dealing with handguns and precision should be looked at before the equipment is blamed.

There are only two things needed to make a successful shot, Stabilizing the Muzzle on the target (referenced by the sights) and Pressing the Trigger to the rear without adding extra movement to the muzzle. Directly related to the fit of the pistol to the shooters hand it is often neglected when a handgun purchase is made.

Would you by a pair of shoes that aren’t comfortable? Trigger Finger Placement on the trigger is important. If the index finger lands on the side of the trigger because of improper fit the possibility for unwanted movement taking place as the trigger is pressed can cause a miss down range.

With this statement being made the other subject is sights. Sight Picture, or how the sights are viewed on the target when the front and rear sights are aligned is a topic sometimes misunderstood by the shooter.

It is important to know where the bullet will impact in relation to your sights. Sights are often broken down into two types, point of aim/point of impact (commonly called “combat” sights) and traditional target sights (or six o’clock hold). Mixing a target hold with combat style sights will generally result in shots impacting low, and vice versa.

Keep these subjects in mind next time you find yourself cursing at your gun for not hitting the target!

SIG SAUER Academy<br

The class is first-come, first-served, and class size is limited, so those interested in attending are encouraged to register early. The registration deadline is Feb. 21.

Linwood-Bay Sportsman’s Club is located at 1643 E. Linwood Rd. in Linwood. class="wp-caption-text">Wisconsin Carry

Wisconsin --(Ammoland.com)- Wisconsin Carry, Inc. firmly believes in, and advocated for constitutional carry this past legislative session.

While we were successful in putting constitutional carry front and center on the legislative and media radar, ultimately, Wisconsin’s concealed carry law that passed requires mandatory proof of training to be supplied with your application to the DOJ.

A hunters education certificate serves as proof of training as does your DD214 showing honorable discharge from the military. In addition, a concealed carry permit (current or expired) from another state will also serve as proof of training.

Wisconsin Carry believes that there are thousands of Wisconsin residents who have extensive firearms experience but because that experience was gathered through family/friends/self-teaching etc they may not have the formal proof of training certificate.

We are also concerned that for many people in this economy, paying $80 to $150 for a training class may be prohibitive and prevent some individuals from being able to obtain the proof of training certificate they need to apply for their concealed weapon license.

Lastly, Wisconsin Carry believes that there are many people that may not have experience with firearms but who have a great interest in taking personal accountability for the safety of themselves and their loved ones. Wisconsin Carry would like to give these people an avenue to enter the right-to-carry movement in Wisconsin as well. We believe that the more law-abiding citizens carrying for self-defense, the more people who will be there to stand up and push-back should future legislatures try to take the right to carry away. We also believe that every law abiding citizen we can bring into the carry movement will be another voter who will not want to pay the renewal tax every 5 years to continue to exercise a human-right to self-defense that they have enjoyed. We believe these people will stand with us to demand constitutional carry from the legislature in the future.

In consideration of these factors and objectives, Wisconsin Carry has devoted a huge amount of resources into developing a 4 hour training course that will exceed the “proof of training” requirements of Act 35. We have certified a handful of qualified instructors across the state to begin to teach this class FREE OF CHARGE to members AND non-members who would like to obtain their concealed carry permit but are encumbered because they do not have a “proof of training” certificate.

We have already begun to schedule and conduct these classes across the state. Initial classes we have scheduled on a limited basis and announced only to dues paying members to ramp up slowly and manage the demand.

I will be sending email notification around of all classes that have openings. (<a

Please do not contact me with questions about possible future classes in different parts of the state. AS SOON AS we have a class together, I will send a notice around. If you contact me to ask, I won’t have any information to share because nothing would have been set (except for those which announcements have been made)

Please *DO* contact me if you have a venue that would have space available at no cost to WCI to HOST a class.

If this class below is not in your area, please STAY TUNED, we will have many many more FREE classes across the state in the upcoming months.

WCI FREE training class: Amberg, WI – Marinette, County

Amberg Community Center,
Wisconsin Carry, Inc. is a non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation and reclamation of the rights of law-abiding Wisconsin residents to carry in the manner of their choosing. We believe that “open carry” and “concealed carry” are choices to be made by law-abiding citizens based on their situation and preference. Wisconsin Carry, like many gun-rights organizations in Wisconsin, is investing a great deal of resources to get Wisconsin law changed to allow concealed carry this next legislative session by proposing Constitutional Carry. Wisconsin Carry, Inc. will continue to use legal recourse to deter unlawful treatment of law-abiding Wisconsin residents who currently exercise their right to open carry, and soon will exercise their right to concealed carry in Wisconsin. title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- Anyone who has been around hand guns for any amount of time can tell you the importance of a weapon reload.

A couple of the obvious concerns are usually how fast can my reload be accomplished? How can I make my reload even faster?

With this you will get the several schools of thought that mention spare mag placement and orientation.

However, how often do we talk about when and where? When should you take that split second to conduct a mag exchange and where is the best possible place for me to accomplish it?

While on the range in our sterile environments, we try to create the stress needed to get officers [and shooters] to build that muscle memory needed to conduct this motor skill. In doing so, we focus primarily on a mag exchange that results in a properly seated magazine producing sustainable firepower.

We often mention that we have to be mobile and we try to instill the two basic types of reloads:

Combat

Tactical reloads

The combat reload is simply conducting a magazine exchange while still under the threat of hostile fire. This type of reload focuses primarily as discussed before (a properly seated magazine producing sustainable firepower). With a combat reload, your moving to some sort of appropriate cover as fast as you humanly can!

The tactical reload is often conducted after that initial confrontation, where the officer [or shooter] has selected appropriate cover and has the mental ability to realized that they a mag exchange is needed. With a tactical reload, your focused on secondary subjects (keeping your eyes on the bad guy), your weapons status and maintaining that exchanged mag.

Regardless of your situation, you’re going to react to your training. This is why instructors spend countless hours trying to tailor their training so that their students have something to refer back to. Understanding how you will react under stress is an import factor. Exposure to scenario based training can definitely enhance or maintain this perishable skill.

So, you ask your self, what should I do if I can’t remember which type of reload to do?

The Answer to that one is simple, If your gun locks back, FIX IT! and keep moving! Don’t get locked back on what to do!

About the Author:
20th Law Enforcement Training Camp earlier this year.

While pondering some of the unfortunate recent tragedies that have struck the law enforcement community nationwide —including a higher percentage of lethal attacks against police officers as well as the accidental shooting death of a 24-year-old corrections officer— I thought I’d offer some tactical tips to law enforcement training instructors.

Now, although this piece mentions officers and may be geared towards law enforcement in general, all the points can most definitely apply to the tactical shooting community as a whole.

Here’s my advice:
Repetition is the law of learning. The more students accurately perform a variety of techniques, the more comfortable they will become. Tactical training drills allow officers to develop individual skill and assist in building muscle memory.

Muscle memory is a kinesthetic phenomenon whereby specific muscular patterns and movements become ingrained. When movements are repeated over and over, eventually these movements can be performed without conscious effort.

Under such extreme stress, cognitive ability is diminished and thought process is narrowed acutely. When facing the stress of lethal confrontation, officers should not have to think about basic weapons manipulation or marksmanship fundamentals; if they have to think about these basic fundamentals under stress, their chances for losing increase.

On the other hand, regular practice and difficult, realistic, and challenging drills will increase survivability. Repetitive training, therefore, is vitally important when considering survival and life-saving tactical techniques.

As with any type of improvement, officers can never increase their ability unless they fail on occasion. No person can develop unless they try something new and push themselves to the limits. Failure or imperfection on a specific technique or drill is likely to occur. The idea is to have officers meet successes. Small improvements provide satisfaction which, in turn, buoys individual esteem and maintains interest and encourages persistence.

As a training instructor, here are some of the key points to remember during every range training opportunity or any tactical firearms training period.

1) Individuals that are considered “experts” in their chosen field are extremely good at the fundamentals. Focusing on the basics is a positive thing. On occasion, give students something fun too. No one wants to be bored at the range.

2) When training, it is important to remember the end goal: preparing for lethal confrontations. In order to maximize training, (a) the individual shooter should envision that each and every shot during the tactical evolution is, in reality, a lethal force situation; and (b) trainers should mimic real world events. For instance, in my last custom tailored Patrol Rifle Course, I had police officers wear the same Active Shooter go-bag that they carry in their squad cars. I had them reload from that pouch. The feedback was positive, mostly because the training mimicked real circumstances. In short, train as you fight. Don’t say, “In reality we’d do this but we’re not going to train like that.” That’s cheating yourself and your team of valuable training! Cheating or foregoing reality will get someone hurt or killed in the long run.

3) Give students several tools to fill up their tactical toolbox, but focus on what will work best. Remember, it’s not a good tactic if it doesn’t work well (a) on the move, (b) in low-light, or (c) under stress.

4) Start out slowly. Speed will come in time. Or, perhaps once you’ve done some drills at full speed, slow down to quarter or half speed until techniques are perfected, then speed back up.

5) Weapons handling skills can increase dramatically without ever shooting a single round. Dry and/or dummy round training periods are extremely helpful and are all too often overlooked. The nice thing about that is the price is right. With the budget crunch, remember, weapons handling skills doesn’t mean you have to shoot a lot of rounds. In fact, dummy rounds work wonders.

6) Firearms are inherently dangerous. Safety briefings and safety are occasionally thought of as the same thing; we’ve said it and we’ve heard it said a thousand times. Unfortunately, it’s under that premise when accidents happen. Don’t think it will never happen here. Creating an atmosphere where everyone’s comfortable enough to say, “Watch your muzzle” or “Get your finger off the trigger,” is essential. No egos among the instructors or the students. Remember, always keep safety first.

Use these tips for a safer, and more effective, training environment and continue to hone your skills and keep adding to your tactical toolbox.

About Jeffrey Denning
Ammoland.com)- Event Description: Introduction to the AR-15/M-16, first in a series of rifle classes.

This 4 hour class will focus on rifle nomenclature, how to disassemble and reassemble the rifle, how to clean it, inspect a pool gun for proper assembly and function prior to your start of shift, common function problems, lubrication, parts failures, and the why/how they work. Functional knowledge of your weapon system is vital to keep it up and running, and will allow the shooter to make better use of future training sessions.

This block of instruction is being offered separately from the other rifle classes, 102, 103, etc, to allow for more range/trigger training time for the shooters in those classes, and will minimize time spent on rifle malfunctions due to improper lubrication and assembly. The goal is for shooters to be comfortable with why their rifle works and be able to focus their future training energy and time on the new skills at hand.

Requirements for this class are an AR-15/M-16 rifle, clear safety glasses(no tint), notepad and pen. Class will be taught inside a heated classroom, there will be no live fire.

This class will last approximately 4 hours, depending on the needs of the attendees. I am off that day and have not set a specific time because I want to get your feedback and hold the class when it is convenient for the most people. Please post a comment to this event stating the time(s) that day that would be the best for you, if you plan to attend, majority wins.

Maximum class size is 18, price is $10. Payment via PayPal will be set up shortly.

See more details (you may have to register to sign in) and RSVP on Women’s Tactical Association: http://tiny.cc/gg9eo

About:
Ammoland.com)- I hope your Holiday season is off to a happy start.

For the next WOD, I wanted to post a couple short videos to quickly explain it and make it easier for those of you who have never practiced this skill, but my cell phone camera and my MacBook are refusing to speak the same language they both spoke a month ago.

I also figured most of you would not miss a WOD this week with everything else going on family/Holiday/work wise.

This WOD focuses on drawing and firing using ONLY your support hand. Get your body armor set up in such a way that you can dry fire at it. Now unload your pistol and put all ammunition in another room. Lock the slide back, stick your finger in the chamber and make sure physically you have an empty chamber and mag well. Slide forward and press check, look away, and press check again, reholster. Do not just rack the slide several times and hope the extractor does its job.

Drawing & Firing a Handgun Using ONLY Your Support Hand

Tuck your gun side hand into the back of your waist and forget it is there. Reach over with your non-gun hand and grab your holstered pistol. If you cannot reach it, pull the holster towards your front. If your belt will not rotate, switch out your velcro inner belt for a leather one, or reverse the velcro to the inside.

Now grab your holster and pull it towards your front. If you still cannot reach it, you may want to consider downsizing, not for vanity, but for the ability to perform a potentially life saving skill. If you can reach your holster where it is, or have pulled it over a little bit and now can reach it, defeat your retention. If you have a Safariland ALS holster, rotate the hood forward and grasp the holster so your thumb is on the ALS button and your middle finger is where the front strap meets the trigger guard.

Push back on the ALS button and lift up with your middle finger. If you have a Blackhawk holster, the hardest part should be finding a way to press the side button and lift up on the pistol at the same time. Once you start playing
around with this, I hope you understand why it is important to first practice this skill with an empty pistol as fingers are going everywhere. Some holsters will be much easier to draw from with your support hand than others, but regardless of which one you have, it is doable, and you can become quite proficient at it with some good old fashioned “finagling.”

There is nothing in the rule book that says you can’t pull the holster around towards your back, or how far to rotate your belt, you do what you have to do, so you can do what you have to do.

Once you get your pistol out of the holster, the next challenge is how to get it rotated around so you are not gripping it upside down. Once I’ve gotten my pistol partially out of the holster, I pull up just high enough to rotate the pistol so the magazine is pointing forward, and can then grip it in a proper support handed grip.

I then draw out of the holster and come in close to my body, muzzle pointed at the threat, to a retention position, then punch out to the threat and step into it with my support side foot. For a one handed grip, I grip tightly and point my thumb up, smooth press of the trigger, second sight picture, follow the threat to the ground, retract, scan 360, and back to the holster the same way it came out. If you do not need to reset your trigger for every shot, then go ahead and give several trigger pulls while your pointed at the threat.

Drawing & Firing a Handgun Using ONLY Your Support Hand

Reholstering:You may find it easier to go back the same way you came out. Insert the muzzle into the holster with the magazine facing forward, lift up slightly and turn the pistol around so the magazine is facing the rear as it usually is, and insert it the rest of the way into the holster, secure your retention.

An option here is instead of drawing the pistol and rotating it in the holster so you can establish a proper grip, some shooters will draw the pistol from the holster gripped upside down, and place the slide against their chest, rolling the pistol over and obtaining a proper grip.

I’ve seen others draw the pistol upside down, place the muzzle on top of their cuff case, or other item on the front of their duty belt, and reverse their grip that way. If you consult the rule book, you will see there is nothing in it prohibiting any method as this is a bonafide, Holy Crap moment. You do what you have to do to get the job done. I highly recommend that you use your holster to rotate the pistol and get a proper grip, the first method described, because it is much easier to run to cover and do it that way without dropping your pistol. Once you find a technique that works for you, try it while moving/running and you may want to make some adjustments.

For this WOD, just stay static so you can figure out the draw, and Tuesday’s WOD will involve movement.

If you are having trouble with the WOD and/or have questions, feel free to shoot me an email got.1911sATgmail.com, or give me a call and we will work it out.

Next time I won’t wear a black coat as a background for a black pistol, but after several days of messing around with technical difficulties, I just didn’t have the patience to redo it.

A peek in to the future for WODs, we will focus on pistol skills for a while, then transition to rifle skills, and throw in some shotgun WODs if there is an interest.

Thanks for tuning in, Go Bears!

Kim

Visit Women’s Tactical Association at: http://womenstactical.ning.com/?xg_source=msg_mes_network

About:
Ammoland.com)- It’s amazing how dogmatic we can be… I was recently talking with an acquaintance that is an Iraq War veteran of the Marine persuasion. While describing working with another group he went to great lengths to deride them for carrying their weapons with the muzzles pointed up.

Fast forward one week to the evening news where I see a video clip of roughly 8 American soldiers clearing a stairwell (from bottom to top) in an Iraqi house all holding their weapons in a hyper-low CQB style ready.

A high shot up the stairwell would require swinging the muzzle upward over 150 degrees, not to mention the issues of the upper shooters unwittingly covering the lower shooters with their muzzles due to neglect. Sudden appearance of a threat that induces a startle response could easily lead to a negligent discharge down the stairwell that slots 2~3 friendlies.

Brian C. Hartman Low and Ready

WHY SO DOWN?
For the uninitiated, proper assumption of the high port involves a strong hand only carry with the muzzle at a strict vertical angle. The weapon is carried on the strong side, well off the centerline. The stock is aggressively sandwiched between the strong side elbow/ upper arm and torso. The support hand does not contact the weapon and as such remains free for whatever the mission dictates.

When boarding rotary wing aircraft it certainly makes sense to keep muzzles down as your life lines are the blades and gearbox overhead, but what about operating on small to intermediate size boats? If you are assaulting said vessel, you’re probably not too stressed about the paint job, however if it is your insertion platform you may kill the whole team or throw the mission into jeopardy.

The contact, low and depressed low readies have acquired an incredible amount of traction for a host of reasons. First is the proliferation of tactical slings.

Years ago it was incredibly common to see troops with muzzles high. M1′s, M14′s, Thompson’s, M16′s, shotguns and even Greaseguns were no exception. However, this was more of a lazy, hip assisted carry than a tactically driven ready position. With the advent and proliferation of the German MP-5, low-ready mania began to generate steam. The nimble sub-machinegun favored by special operations units, featured a unique proprietary sling that when looped in a particular manner around one of the users arms and neck, enabled the weapon to be carried hands free. The design was to allow for handgun transitions, breaching, climbing and prisoner handling… the result was swinging, loaded, unsafe weapons while scoring targets, policing brass, putting in a fresh pinch of Copenhagen or keeping your hands warm in your pockets. Contemporary low readies are a muddled combination of part hold and carry, and part gravity and sloth. The notion of letting nylon webbing dictate where your weapon points is lunacy.

During training I have directed students to assume a high ready or high port and quite matter-of-factly been told, “I can’t with this sling.” This is unacceptable. It is for this reason that some British special operations units forbid the use of a sling at all. Your equipment should work for you, not the other way around.

Second is speed. Low readies work great on the square range. An unobstructed shooter with the toe of the stock properly mounted in the pocket of the shoulder can very quickly, aggressively and efficiently bring the weapon to bear. Yet with proper training, we have proven that the weapon can be mounted nearly as fast from a high port as from a hyper-low ready. However that does not necessarily make it suitable or safe for all environments and conditions.

And third is the issue of the quasi-testosterone fueled image… guys think it looks cool to have that weapon up front, muzzle down and lashed to 6 yards of a cats cradle. If you fall into this latter category, you’re probably the kind of guy who would defend wearing a drop holster with shorts and a tank top.

ISSUES WITH THE LOW READY
Weapons held with the toe of the stock in the shoulder present three primary problems.

Field-of-View Limitations
The sheer mass of the weapon held at 45 degrees or higher, acts as a blind obscuring the shooters field-of-view from any obstacles or hazards on the ground. An adversary whose toe is flagging around a corner might be missed if ones light, laser and optic addled weapon were to block it. Needless to say, a fully shouldered weapon can obscure the hands or chest of a potential adversary making threat assessment either incorrect or more time consuming.

Muzzle Discipline
When working as part of a team that is conducting bounding or peeling drills, a muzzle-down weapon is bound to sweep the torsos of teammates who are providing cover fire from either a kneeling or prone position. Hand in hand with this problem is that of interval. With a weapon in front of my body, I can only get so close to the teammate in front of me. If I’m truly muzzle conscious I will also have to modify my low ready into an offset (left or right) or uber-depressed elevation, which defeats the purpose of the low ready entirely. In addition, a sudden requirement to pivot left or right may result in prematurely raising the long gun, or getting caught on your buddies gear. With the muzzle up, the body is turned and the muzzle drops. Worst-case scenario, you will only be covering clouds or ceiling.

Balance
If the weapon is held low during high-speed (read: running) maneuvers, neither hand is free for balance. Maintaining your footing over uneven terrain can be life and death for you and the team alike. In addition falling with the weapon held in front of you will result in it being sandwiched between your body and the ground. We have seen such falls injure the operator, & worse yet, damage their weapon.

CONCLUSION
Low readies are fantastic, and the high port is not the end-all-be-all… no ready position or carry is! However, it is a very stable, reliable and safe technique for particular movements and terrain. Break free of your one-option shackles and embrace this exceptional tool.

Brian C. class="wp-caption-text">Range Master

Memphis, TN --(Ammoland.com)- When a responsible person first begins going armed, he is usually haunted by two recurring questions, or self-doubts:

If I’m really attacked, and my life is at stake, will I be able to handle it?

What if I screw up and kill an innocent person?

This is a normal reaction, and to a degree it is healthy. We do, however, need to address these issues and resolve them, before a conflict, so that they will not raise their ugly heads when we should be concentrating on winning the fight.

Remember, if an unavoidable fight is thrust upon us, we MUST WIN!

The alternative can be death, or crippling injury. The first issue to face is that of FEAR. Fear is a normal reaction to physical violence for most people. In addition, since most of us no longer have military experience and live in “civilized” surroundings, we may not have ever actually engaged in a true fight before our moment of truth in a criminal attack. This fear of the unknown is, for many, worse than the fear of being hurt or killed.

First, let me say this. Unless you are an exceptional person, a nutcase, or a liar, and you have actually been involved in armed conflict, you have tasted fear. I’m not ashamed to say I have been scared several times, and I fully expect to be scared again before my life is over. What you must learn to do is control your fear, and do what you must to win.

Fear can be controlled and overcome, even in life threatening circumstances. This is obviously true, and it is proven every day by hundreds of ordinary people all over the country. Here are some

Steps you can take to make this process easier:

Admit to yourself you are afraid, then move on. Concentrate your mental energies on the task at hand, not on your fear of death, injury, or loss of ego.

Avoid dwelling on the chance of failure. Concentrate on finding a way to win.

Take control of yourself. Autogenic breathing is the very best and most efficient way to do this. (Details later.)

Focus on getting the job done.

Have a Plan B. Always, always, always, expect Plan A to fail. Expect your gun to malfunction. Expect the suspect to stay up after being hit solidly. Expect to be injured. If any of these things occur, have a pre-planned option to continue (Plan B).

Turn anger into a motivator. Who does this clown think he is?!? What makes him think he has the right to (rob/rape/kill/ pick one) me?!?

Accept an element of fate in every situation. You can get hurt by accident after doing everything right. Control everything you CAN control (selection of equipment, getting adequate training and practice, being alert, thinking tactically) so there are fewer things you CAN NOT control. Stack the odds in your favor and fate has a lot less impact.

Courage under fire is not a matter of being without fear. It is a matter of being able to control fear and accomplish your mission, which is to stay alive. Only fools are fearless.

The other nagging self-doubt concerns over-reacting and shooting someone under unjustifiable circumstances. If you are reading this, that will not happen. Citizens who are responsible enough to obtain carry permits, seek expensive training, make time for practice sessions, etc. are simply too honest, caring, and self disciplined to shoot people without just cause.

In my own state, there have been eight fatal shootings by permit holders in the past three years. Every single one was judged to be justifiable and lawful by the Attorney General’s office. Not one of these permit holders was charged with any crime nor were they sued for anything.

Why? Because every single case was clear-cut, obvious, and morally, legally, and ethically justified. Private citizens have a great reluctance to shoot, even when it is necessary. In fact, for many the problem they will face is the exact opposite of being “trigger happy”. Believe it or not, every day, people who are armed and know how to use their weapons, and who have an opportunity to use their weapons to save their lives, fail to do so and die as a result. This happens to both private citizens and police officers alike.

You ask, “Why on earth would someone who is armed stand there and literally watch a thug kill him?” There are a number of reasons, and they stem from the socialization process that the normal person goes through from birth (but that the criminal does not).

These reasons most often include:

Moral repugnance to taking a life: You have been taught all of your life that human life is sacred, that to kill is wrong, and that only bad people hurt others.

Failure to be mentally prepared: An astonishing number of people who go armed have never given any thought whatsoever to the fact that they may have to shoot someone. To many, the gun is a talisman, and wearing it is thought to ward off evil spirits. In fact, it is a tool, one used for regaining control of your immediate environment in an emergency.

Failure to understand the dynamics of armed confrontations: Many people armed with firearms are killed by thugs armed with edged weapons because they fail to take the “lesser” weapon seriously; they don’t understand that deadly force is deadly force, whether applied by gun or knife; and they don’t realize how quickly someone at ten feet can appear at one foot.

Inhibition by community pressure and fear of lawsuits: These are trivial matters compared to being killed, raped, or permanently crippled. Get your priorities straight! Unless you are alive, these don’t matter, anyway.

Uncertainty about when deadly force is justified: This is a training issue. Be certain that you understand the laws of your state as they apply to self-defense and the use of deadly force. Once you have internalized this information, it is simple and easy to see when the circumstances fit the law. There is nothing subtle about someone actually trying to kill you! It will be obvious to you, to any witnesses, and to the police.

The best way to be fully mentally prepared to actually press that trigger if you have to, is to develop a well thought out and plainly stated set of rules of engagement, long before you are faced with a crisis. This is referred to as a “pre-made decision”, thought out, verbalized, and firmly planted in your mind in advance.

I suggest the acronym IDOL, which stands for “Immediate Defense of Life”. Make a commitment that you will only fire as a desperate measure to terminate a threat to your own life, or the life of an innocent third party. If you pose an imminent and otherwise unavoidable threat to my life, or that of an associate (wife, partner, etc.) I will act swiftly and decisively to put you down and out. I will reach for my gun for no other reason, period.

Many people think about this incorrectly. They ask themselves, “If he does —-, can I shoot him?” That is a recipe for disaster! Your question should ALWAYS be, “ Do I have to shoot him?” Ask yourself, “If I don’t shoot this man, right here, right now, will I be killed or crippled?” If the answer is Yes, shoot him! If the answer is No, try something else.

As with most things, this is a matter of training. Proper training ingrains the proper responses. Repetition is the mother of all skill. With skill comes confidence. With confidence comes the ability to think under pressure and make sound tactical decisions.

To be of value to you, training must meet the test of the Three R’s. Training must be: RELEVANT REALISTIC RECENT.

Relevant training refers to exercises and skill drills pertinent to the task of self-defense. Bullseye shooting training, for instance, is not particularly relevant.

Realistic training is conducted on humanoid targets, from the holster, with a carry type gun and full powered ammunition, in varied lighting conditions, and under time pressure.

Recent training assures retention of motor skills, which degrade quickly. The skills involved in rapidly firing a full-power weapon with precision are perishable, and are lost completely without frequent practice. I suggest two or three sessions of dry practice at home each week, with at least one range session per month to maintain competency. Practice builds skill, skill builds confidence. Having a well developed skill set, and the confidence that well developed skill engenders, can help you keep your head and stay in control during highly stressful conflicts.

“An amateur practices until he gets it right. A professional practices until he can’t get it wrong.”

About:
Ammoland.com)- Movement is a critical component of surviving a combative encounter.

Armies understand the value of movement, boxers spend as much time on footwork as they do on punching, and offline lateral movement during close-range gun battles has been proven to drastically increase survivability.

Two or more combatants rarely remain stationary for very long while engaging one another with empty hands, knives, impact weapons or bullets.

Possessing the ability to move during a reactive incident provides numerous advantages, including escape, getting off the line of attack, opportunity to attain cover or concealment, alteration of one’s target profile, achieving a favorable angle of attack, and gaining a time advantage (however minor).

In simplified terms, moving targets are more difficult to hit, and a moving body is harder to isolate, entangle, and control.

All combative movement should initiate from a solid, balanced platform.

This will give you the ability to move rapidly in any direction, stability in case you have to absorb forward impact from one or more attackers, and flexibility to move over uneven terrain. This platform should replicate our instinctive body alarm reaction state as much as possible.

AmmoLand Gun News

Manasquan, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- I’m always so excited when I get to pick up a new gun.

I look at my new purchase in awe thinking, “Wow, this is MINE”.

This time the newest member of the family was a Mossberg 510 mini shotgun. It’s my first shotgun and it will be perfect for me and to teach my kids with as well. As I look at it, all I can think about is taking it to the range, but it’s about ten o’clock at night now and the range won’t be open until 10 am tomorrow.

It’s exactly this feeling that I want to see other female firearms owners experience. What I have seen after taking women to the range and speaking with others is that some women have a tendency to hold back on how they feel about owning and shooting guns (at least in this part of the USA). It’s almost like they feel they don’t have the right to really own one or a place in that world – I don’t know why, but I imagine that it has something to do with shooting not being a “feminine” activity. That it’s not OK to express an interest in things that are loud and make really big holes in the target. But after speaking with the women who have come shooting with me, I learned they quickly realize how empowering and fun it can be, too.

The days of the quiet, polite female who takes a back seat in a man’s world are long since gone, but society’s stereotypes die hard and there are still those who might view certain sports and activities as masculine. I wasn’t raised this way, in fact, in my family all the kids were treated equally regardless of gender. My brother took his turn washing the dishes and cooking dinner, and my sisters and I put in our time mowing the lawn and helping my father with projects in the garage. My parents always told my four sisters and me that we could do anything we wanted, and they stood behind us all the way. I never would have thought I couldn’t own, handle, or even build guns if I put my mind to it and wanted it badly enough. It took me a while to realize that not everyone is as fortunate as we were.

I find it interesting to read about strong women who stand out and do things that are not considered “ladylike”.

Women's Competitive Shooter Athena Lee of Katy, Texas

For example, on July 4th, I read the story of Sonya Thomas, who at 5 feet and 105 pounds has become a competitive eating champion. She gets up in front of crowds of spectators and beats her male competitors time and time again, often to the jeers of the audience and sometimes with a barrage of garbage raining down on her. Say what you will about the gross out factor of competitive eating, the fact that Sonya walked into a stadium full of Philly fans to compete in the 2005 Wing Bowl where she was touted by the crowd as the “feminist villain” shows that she has a confidence that is admirable.

This past July 4th she won the annual Nathan’s hotdog eating contest in the newly created women’s division.

And then you have someone like Bonnie, a 70 year old grandmother who found a man had broken into her New Hampshire home undressed, and was sitting at her kitchen table eating a meal from her refrigerator. She was rightly concerned about the safety of her grandson asleep upstairs and grabbed a bat and starting beating the man until he left the house. Bonnie told the media, “I don’t want anyone to ever think they can hurt my family and get away with it. You have got to take care of yourself,” she says, “You’re not weak, be strong. There’s always a way to protect yourself. Use it.” Exactly. Now that is a woman who has confidence in herself, and it showcases that no one should ever feel the need to hold back when protecting themselves – male or female.

These are two different women, who feel comfortable enough with themselves to act outside what can be considered acceptable for women in our society. They are two women who are not afraid to draw on the confidence they feel inside themselves and do what feels right for them. I understand it can be hard to walk into male dominated environments, like a gun shop or shooting range, especially alone. This is one of the reasons I decided to become a firearms instructor. I enjoy introducing students, and especially women, to the world of firearms.

Once women make the decision to go for it and enter the range, I find many are afraid to handle the gun because of a fear they might break it. So they handle it gently, like it’s fragile or irreplaceable. Don’t be afraid to handle your gun roughly ladies! (By this I mean don’t pick it up like you would a newborn infant). A 9mm handgun can withstand twenty five thousand pounds of blow back pressure (psi) when you pull the trigger; believe me, even if you are at the gym every day, you can’t duplicate that kind of power. It’s actually better not to assist or baby your gun when chambering a round. Rack the slide and let it fly forward. Really get to know your firearm, touch everything on it and know how it works! Please be safe though and follow all safe gun handling rules including making sure it’s unloaded first. The gun is just a tool to get the job done, it’s no different than many other tools you will use on a daily basis. And it’s your tool. Whether your goal is to send some rounds down range at a piece of paper for fun or to gain some experience in order to keep a gun for self defense, like any other tool you own, knowing intimately how it works will allow it to work best for you.

It doesn’t matter if you want to shoot in pink earmuffs, or you buy a rifle DuraCoated in a purple camouflage pattern – in fact, bedazzle your gun case if you like, because it only matters how you feel inside about shooting your gun. You are just as capable and probably more responsible, than the guy in the next port. Don’t assume he knows any more than you do. Don’t misunderstand; my goal is only to encourage women to have confidence in their own ability to handle a gun. I have been the recipient of much encouragement and support of male instructors and gun owners.

I look at shooting as my time to relax so I often enjoy shooting alone. It’s at least as good as a visit to the spa. I have to clear my mind and turn off my phone to concentrate on what I am doing, especially if I want to shoot well. But I know that sometimes it’s easier to go with a friend.

My favorite experience was taking a friend to shoot who was sure she just would not be able to do it. Yes, of course she thought it was great that I could but there was no reasoning with her. It was too complicated, too much recoil, too much unfounded fear that she could never protect herself – that it wasn’t her job, her right, her responsibility to do so. After she fired the handguns, and very well I might add, I convinced her to shoot the AR-15. After the first round, she just paused and then looked at me.

“Wow,” she said, “that felt great. I can do this. I feel so empowered.” Hello, and welcome to my world. Remember ladies, it’s your gun, don’t be afraid of it. Own it.

Tags: Ammoland.com)- This week Action Target will release the first of five training videos featuring world champion shooter Rob Leatham.

The videos will feature instruction from Rob and drills he uses in his own training.

Each video will focus on a specific type of steel target in Action Target’s “PT” steel target line. The first video will feature drills and skills Rob practices with the PT Plate Rack. Subsequent videos in later weeks will emphasize how to train with other steel targets like the PT Static and PT Dueling Tree.

“The cool thing about these videos is that they really are training videos and not some promotional piece where we only talk about Action Target.” said David Mathis, Marketing Director at Action Target. “Rob shows you some of the drills he uses in his own practice, and explains the purpose and relevance of each one.”

Filmed last year at Rob’s home range, the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club in Mesa, AZ, the videos will be hosted on Action Target’s YouTube page for all to view. The skills discussed are intended to help anyone interested in increasing their skill with a pistol, whether they are law enforcement, casual shooters, or a serious competition shooter.

“Working with Rob on this was a great experience and it really showed his level of skill. Except for one or two drills later in the day when we were all hot and tired, all of the drills you see were done with one take. Rob is just that good.” added Mathis. “And his level of understanding of the mechanics and what is going on while you are shooting matches his shooting ability.”

Visit www.youtube.com/actiontarget to view the first video. class="wp-caption-text">Eric at the Gunmart Blog

United States --(Ammoland.com)- So, have you ever been in a gun fight? No?

Well, me either… but I have had a good bit of force on force training.

Yeah, yeah… that kinda sounded like one of those Holiday Inn Express commercials, but the point that I am trying to make is that force on force training is one heck of an invaluable experience.

If you’re just an average Joe like I am who because of time and financial constraints will probably never shoot 10,000 rounds in a year and who will only go to a minuscule number of training classes in their lifetime then let me offer this suggestion.

Focus all of your time, money and efforts into doing some force on force training.

Force on force training is a way to engage in a gun fight, get shot, feel some pain and everybody walk away with a smile on their face. It’s just about as real as you can get. They use marker rounds or simunitions to enable shot placement recognition and to inflict a small dose of pain motivation on the recipient. Standard firearms use conversion kits to allow them to function properly, and safety equipment is worn by participants to limit injury.

Force on force training is by far the most productive form of training that any civilian (and probably LEO) could ever do. The thing about getting shot at is that you can listen to someone talk about it for days on end, but you will never truly understand what it is like until you have experienced it. It is a stresser, and one that will inevitably lead to a “deer in the headlights” moment the first time it is experienced. Someone can tell you that until they are blue in the face, but until you actually experience it your mind will never be able to tell your body how to push past it.

One of the major benefits of force on force training is how it seems to shorten the learning curve.

First off, you will find that the more you engage in this type of activity the more clearly and quickly you can respond to these types of encounters. There is no faster way to learn why its important to “get off the X” in a gun fight then to actually be shot at. You also will never be able to truly understand how important cover is until you’ve actually had a need for it.

Simply put, there is nothing like a little bit of fear and pain to kick the learning process into high gear.

Another key thing that I have learned is that being in a fight teaches you how to think during a fight. Participating in force on force training teaches your mind and body how to improvise when your preplanned tactics fail. We all know that old saying about how “no plan ever survives first contact with the enemy,” but until you are forced into that experience and required to improvise during a shootout you will never truly understand.

So do yourself a favor. Don’t spend anymore time or money on practice or training until you first go out and participate in some force on force training. It will by far be the most productive training you will ever have.

Yes, thats a bold statement, but the way I see it….. What better way is there to train for a gun fight then to actually be in a gun fight?

About:
New Jersey Second Amendment Society

New Jersey --(Ammoland.com)- An ever increasing number of people are purchasing firearms for home protection today.

Many of these people are first time firearms owners who have decided for various reasons to add a layer of protection for their families.

This means that many homes with firearms will also have children present and while good firearms safety storage measures are important to block access to all unauthorized persons, its especially important to consider how to safeguard your children as well as to introduce them to any firearms you have in your home.

It is the responsibility of all gun owners to store their guns safely. New Jersey law (Statute 2C:58-15) requires that all firearms be inaccessible to minors.

It states “A person who knows or reasonably should know that a minor is likely to gain access to a loaded firearm at a premises under the person’s control commits a disorderly persons offense if a minor gains access to the firearm, unless the person: (1) Stores the firearm in a securely locked box or container; (2) Stores the firearm in a location which a reasonable person would believe to be secure; or (3) Secures the firearm with a trigger lock.” Other states have similar laws restricting a minor’s access to firearms and including exclusions where applicable.

I would take it a step further and suggest that it is a good idea that all occupants of the home be educated - on their level - on how to safely handle, or not handle a firearm. There is no right or wrong age or amount of information given to a child regarding firearms, it is solely up to the discretion of parents to decide what is appropriate in their situation.

The first question many new gun owners will ask is if the gun is meant for home protection, how can it be stored unloaded? Of course, any firearm that will be used for personal and home protection will need to be stored ready for immediate use and easily accessible to those authorized to use it. There are many ways to store a gun as “inaccessible” but the first question following how the gun will be used is who will be present in the home. When children are present, the best gun storage will be in a locked safe. As children are naturally curious, guns that are stored in the top of closets or attics should not be considered inaccessible to children.

There are a number of options when choosing a safe to store your home defense firearm. Safes that use keys will make it difficult to access the gun quickly, so a better choice would be a keypad design or a biometric fingerprint safe that is secured inside a drawer or is attached to a wall or nightstand. With a biometric safe, several fingerprints can be stored in the memory of the safe that will allow quick access, usually within seconds, to the loaded firearm inside. Biometric safes can be finicky however, and some people will have a more difficult time having their fingerprints recognized immediately. Another choice is a safe with a digital keypad. The keypad would have four buttons set in the pattern of a hand and the user programs a set order in which to hit the buttons to open the safe. With practice, this sort of safe is easy to use both quickly and in the dark. In order to access the firearm quickly, regular practice, even nightly, is recommended. A good trick is to hide something you need inside, like your car keys or prescription medicine until you can open the safe without even thinking about it. There are also safes that combine fingerprint recognition and a keypad in case it fails to open using one of the methods. All safes of this kind will have back up keys, be sure to keep them in a separate location from the safe, and inaccessible to children.

Firearms that will not be used for home defense can be stored in a safe with any type of lock as they don’t need to be accessed immediately. A common design of a safe for storing long guns would have a combination lock on the door.

It should go without saying that anyone handling firearms follow the rules of safe gun handling. Always keep your gun pointed in a safe direction. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Always keep your gun unloaded until ready to use it. It is important to stress the word “always” each time you mention safe gun handing, especially with new shooters and when introducing firearms to children.

For very young children, the best education concerning firearms is to stress that they should not be touched under any circumstances and to leave the area and tell an adult immediately if a gun is present. Some parents may decide that it is better not to mention to their children that firearms are present in the home at all. It is up to each family to decide the appropriate level of knowledge for their children.

I have found that because children are naturally curious, it is hard to hide anything from them. Each of my children have had the opportunity to see, touch and handle a gun in our home under my supervision. They have all been educated on the rules of safe gun handling and have been told to only handle firearms in my presence and with my permission. I have also made it clear that anytime they wish to see a gun in our home all they have to do is ask. If you decide to offer this option to your children, and I believe it is a good one, be prepared to respond immediately when they ask you to see your gun. Also be prepared to take the time to allow them to handle the gun, safely, if they so choose. Doing this will take away the mystery from the gun and by dropping what you are doing you are showing your child how important it is that an adult be present when guns are present and it takes away the mystique of the gun. Be prepared for an inquisitive child to test you and ask you at a very inconvenient time to see your gun. If you comply, you will find that you have passed the “test” and the interest and thrill will quickly wear off. It is unlikely the child will continue to ask you to see the gun. By doing this you have also added another level of protection for your child. If your child has had exposure to your gun under your supervision, it is unlikely he will feel the need to handle a gun, for example, when visiting a friend’s house. Further, since he has the information you provided to him, he knows to leave the area and tell an adult.

When making the decision to inform your child about guns in your home, remember that children will share information with anyone they come into contact with, their teachers, friends, even the cashier at the supermarket. So consider how open you want to be about the fact that you own guns and weigh that against the kind of safety cushion you provide your child with by introducing him to the guns in your home. Also consider that if you tell your child about your guns but then ask him to keep it a secret, it presents a difficult message for a less mature child. It is difficult for some children to process what information belongs as private family information and what can be shared with others. You don’t want to have your child think there is anything “wrong” with the fact that his family owns guns.

The more matter of fact you are about it, the less enticing the idea of sharing the information will be to your child

Shari Spivack is is a board member, officer and valuable member of the New Jersey Second Amendment Society. class="wp-caption-text">New Jersey Second Amendment Society

New Jersey --(Ammoland.com)- I recently had the opportunity to try out the F.A.T.S training system after taking a level two Urban Pistol class at the Police Academy range.

The class was fantastic but after it was over, I peeked in the room where the F.A.T.S training sessions were being conducted.

F.A.T.S stands for FireArms Training Simulator.

It is an entirely interactive system that uses a computer program, a large screen and very realistic firearms that are loaded with computer chips instead of ammunition. It looks somewhat like a big video game, but it is definitely not a game.

The F.A.T.S system is used in police and military training. It costs upwards of $150,000 and was designed to be used with many types of firearms – however, each type of firearm added to the system costs several thousand dollars. The software on this F.A.T.S system was designed to simulate police calls and stops and the firearms were all corded (i.e. attached) to the computer. There are systems where the firearms are not corded, and the guns have magazines filled with nitrogen gas to simulate recoil. With certain software, it is also possible to create scenarios where the suspects will not only be shooting back at you from the video screen, but the instructor can launch soft foam projectiles at you from a device called the Hostile Fire Simulator. In this case you would need to make use of available cover in the room to avoid being hit.

The instructor personalizes each scenario for the individual shooter and can increase or decrease the intensity of the situation to match the shooters ability level even as the situation progresses. For example, if the shooter is handling the scenario well, the instructor can increase the stress level by adding threats to the scene or having the shooter run out of ammunition. When I was offered the chance to try out a few scenarios I jumped at it.

To begin with I chose my weapon, and since I am most familiar with my Glock 19, that is what I chose. The gun is created so that the physical dimensions exactly replicate the real firearm. The first thing the large screen tells you is to “load your weapon”. This is done as you would expect, by pressing the magazine release button which pops the magazine out about an inch from the grip. Then you push it back in and rack the slide and you are good to go. I stood in the ready position aiming the gun at the screen waiting to see what would come next. My first scenario was a woman with mental health issues who was crouched down on the grass in a park. The scenario was introduced by another police officer and although I was standing in place, it appeared as if I was approaching the threat. The woman was wailing about her dead husband’s grave when she pulled out a gun and aimed it at me. I fired a few times until she was down and the computer decided my scenario was over.

The next part is the replay and analysis of what happened. The software can track exactly where the muzzle of your gun was as at all times, when you decided to fire, how many shots you fired, whether they were lethal hits or not and so on. I did alright on my first try – three shots, three hits, one was lethal and brought her down. The computer can tell where each shot was placed and know how the suspect would react to the gunshots, thus either continuing or ending your scenario. You will know instantly whether you made the right decisions and if not, where to concentrate your attention the next time.

The other great component of the experience was the fantastic instruction I got from the Gun for Hire instructor. Even though I was shooting at a video screen it was still a very different feeling to aim at a moving “person” who was pointing a weapon back at me – instead of at a piece of paper. In the replay analysis, I could see how the muzzle of my gun was jumping a bit off target after taking my first shot which required a realignment of the sights before firing again. I was instructed to let the trigger out more slowly and just until it reset to keep the sights lined up and on target and therefore decrease the time needed to pull off my next shot. I was able to try this over and over and a get a good feeling for it before trying my next scenarios. (I was also eager to try it out at my next outing at the range – I had success easing the trigger out shooting .22s, but I’ll need more practice with 9mm.)

The next couple of suspects went down with all shots fired being lethal shots. I was feeling pretty good and all was well until a second threat was introduced in one of the scenarios. Now there were two people to divide my attention between, who would become a threat first, where should I point the muzzle of my gun? I found as well, that I was only firing a few shots each time, instead of just unloading my magazine at the suspect. The machine becomes very addicting, even as I could feel my stress level increase as the scenarios progressed it did not stop me from wanting to continue. Each time the instructor said, “Do you want to try one more?” There was no hesitation from me, “Yes!”

Although the FATS system was created as a great training tool for law enforcement, anyone who is looking to take their shooting to the next level should seek out the opportunity to take instruction using it. Each time I take an advanced live fire class, I take it because I enjoy it, but I also know that whether or not I hit my targets each time I am gaining knowledge that will always stay with me. I hope I never need to draw upon that knowledge to protect my family, but there is no question in my mind that I would do anything in my power to protect my children.

The difference with the FATS training is that I had a chance to test my reflexes and my judgment and have it analyzed by the computer. Speaking as a mother, I can tell you that I take my job to protect my children very seriously. Whether it is advocating for my children in school setting, or standing between them and a threat to their physical being, there is no question that I will always run towards the danger if it means they remain safe.

To this end, there is definitely valuable information to be learned about your ability to shoot under stress and at another human being by running through the FATS scenarios. Thank you to Anthony at Gun for Hire (www.gunforhire.com) for giving me the opportunity to try it out.

And as for future training, my husband doesn’t know this yet, but if we ever get around to refinishing our basement, I may try to slip a FATS setup into the plans.

About:
Modern Defensive Training Systems

Utica, NY --(Ammoland.com)- Applicability-Why do we train combatives?
Reality; in our contemporary combatives environment our ability to carry concealed is becoming more constricted on a daily basis, not only in location but in types of tools as well.

Thus your chances of being involved in a physical altercation are much greater than being involved in a gunfight.

So training in combatives becomes absolutely critical if you are truly serious about your ability to survive a life threatening encounter.

Methodology-How do we train combatives?
MDTS advocates any and all types of combatives and martial arts, and if given the chance you should train them all, but many traditional methodologies don’t necessarily fit into the context of a true combative encounter. Also, with the way many schools train, in the short term there is no real expectation that you have gained any true fighting ability. This reason is directly related to the explosion of MMA/BJJ as a fighting style.

The initial training in MMA/BJJ puts person against person on the mat and in a fighting context, even from the first session you are building innate fighting skills.

So, when selecting a combatives program critically analyze how training is conducted:

Will I be able to walk out of the gym today better prepared for a fight than when I walked in?

Is the training of this organization really oriented on increasing my survivability, or just perpetuating its own dogma, school of thought or financial gain?

How much training is dedicated to combative sparring or man v. man? Is this sparring or training “pressurized” involving some contact, aggression and aliveness?

Implementation- What are the benefits of combative training?
While training combatives is not as “sexy” or “cool” as firearms training, the benefits of combatives training carryover into all other facets of personal protection. Combatives training should drastically increase your General Physical Preparedness (GPP).

Every time I spar or roll with an opponent I am immediately reminded how physically demanding a fight actually is, and this always motivates me to increase my level of physical fitness, which increases quality of life in countless other ways.

Combatives training gives me the confidence of knowing that I CAN survive an unarmed encounter, and confidence is a key ingredient in successfully negotiating a life threatening encounter. Another major benefit is that many of the basic movements, stances, and fundamentals of unarmed combatives easily correlate to fighting with a Tactical Folding Knife and many other weapon platforms.

About Modern Defensive Training Systems:
Chris Fry is the owner and director of training and curriculum development for Modern Defensive Training Systems in Utica, N.Y. where he conducts courses in reality driven practical combatives skills, extreme close quarters physical defense, tactical folding knife and edged weapon combatives and combative pistol, carbine and shotgun skills.
