A New Slug

The PDX1 Defender Segmenting Slug is designed to segment or break into three equal pieces when the slug encounters what the FBI calls, “protocol barriers” in plain English; heavy cloth, wallboard, and plywood into ballistic gelatin. This slug gives the advantage of a slug and buckshot in one shell therefore eliminating the need and expense of both and reduces the chance of a slug over-penetrating interior walls as rifled slugs have a tendency to do.

Currently, the PDX1 Defender Segmenting Slug is only offered in 2 ¾ inch, the one ounce load boasts a respectable 1600 fps.

Centerfire Offerings
With more and more folks relying on ARs for their home defense needs, the problem of over penetration is a very real scenario. Winchester’s PDX1 Defender centerfire loaded with the Split-Core Technology bullets are designed to deliver energy when needed and expand rapidly to prevent over penetration.

New for 2012, is the 77 grain .223 Remington and the 120 grain .308 Winchester offerings.

The new 77 grain round can be fired from any .223 Remington, it is best stabilized in a barrel with a 1-7” or a 1-9”rate of twist. The 77 grain bullet exits the barrel at 2,850 feet per second.

The .308 Winchester offers owners of a .308 chambered AR the same advantages PDX1 Defender fans have come to rely on. The 120 grain bullet has a muzzle velocity of 2500 feet per second.

Both of these rifle loadings have been designed for use in close encounters like those in a home invasion.

A rimfire home defense round?

While I wouldn’t call a .22 magnum handgun an ideal home protection cartridge, the fact remains; the best home protection firearm is the one in your hand when you need it most. If the 22 magnum, which does enjoy brisk sales as a home protection firearm, is that firearm, why not have it loaded with the best designed bullet? Enter the PDX1 Defender 22 – A .22 magnum rimfire cartridge which delivers from a two inch barrel, according to Winchester, a 46 grain jacketed hollow point at 1,200 feet per second, like other PDX1 offerings the bullet is designed for optimal penetration and fast expansion.

I have seen arguments and comparisons of the .22 magnum head to head with the .380, .25 ACP and the .32 ACP. It will be interesting to see how these cartridges stack up against one another once the smoke clears.

Colt Model of 1911 DVD

Sacramento, CA --(Ammoland.com)- The Board of Directors of the California Rifle and Pistol Association (CRPA) is proud to announce the development of a new class of membership with oversight by a special President’s committee called the Sportsmen’s Business Alliance (SBA), which will in turn report to the CRPA Board of Directors.

The SBA will be a new CRPA membership designation (blending our current Club and Business membership categories) that will serve as a referral service and as an assistance and mentor group for businesses that deal in all sporting goods (not just firearms retailers) and including clubs and ranges, which are businesses, as well. An additional group that will be included will be firearms trainers and firearms training organizations.

The vision of this new group would be a “chamber of commerce” for sporting goods-related businesses and clubs providing special new assistance and services including: a united voice with regards to legislation and litigation, templates for small business plans, marketing concepts, annual conferences for best practices, and inclusion in the CRPA’s new annual Preferred Vendor Directory (PVD), (a further new extension of the idea).

In addition, the Sportsmen’s Business Alliance will provide a comprehensive coordinated package of services for the firearms novice, providing an ABC approach to entering the shooting sports on even the most basic elementary level. In effect, the new SBA will create a sequential plan which incorporates “A.” The Dealer, “B.” The Trainer, and “C.” The Club and Range by answering these three questions:

• Where can I purchase a firearm, ammo, and equipment and how do I go about it?
• Where can I receive training on how to safely use that firearm?
• Where can I go to shoot my firearm?

The SBA will require the creation of a new CRPA special President’s committee, initially filled with about 7-9 members (some board members, some non-board members) who either own or manage these businesses, clubs and/or ranges. Businesses and clubs throughout the state can join as CRPA/SBA members and the leadership for the new group will be drawn from these members.

This new SBA Committee will be largely self-developed and directed, based on the needs of those served and with oversight by the CRPA Board of Directors. We believe the new SBA will be operational in approximately 90 days.

Work on a cleared table or bench. Always give cleaning your full attention. Never clean a firearm while doing something else.

Follow these basic steps to clean your firearm.

• Point the muzzle in a safe direction, and make sure the gun is unloaded.
• Remove all ammunition from the cleaning bench.
• For the most thorough cleaning, field strip the firearm as directed in the firearm owner’s manual. Then clean each part separately.
• Follow the instructions in your cleaning kit. If possible, clean the barrel from the breech end, using a bore guide and a cleaning rod holding a bore-brush or patch, whetted with solvent. Pass the brush/patch all the way through the barrel. Repeat several times with fresh patches. You may need a larger brush for the chamber. Use a hand brush to clean the crevices where powder residue accumulates. Follow with a dry patch, and finish with a lightly oiled patch for the barrel. Use cloth for other parts.

A Cleaning Kit Should Include:

• Assorted rod tips—brushes, mop tips, slotted tips, jag tips
• Bore light
• Clean cloths
• Cleaning rods
• Cotton swabs
• Dental mirror
• Gun grease
• Gun oil
• Gunsmith screwdrivers
• Patches appropriate for the caliber or gauge of the firearm
• Pipe cleaners
• Solvent
• Stand to hold the firearm securely in a horizontal position
• Toothbrush

Use a flexible “pull-through” cleaning cable when cleaning firearms with lever or semi-automatic actions to prevent dirt, grime, or debris from being pushed into the action area.

Use cleaning solvents in a well-ventilated area and only as directed. If cleaning from the muzzle end, use a muzzle protector so that you don’t damage the rifling near the muzzle.

Anyone who has fired a .357 Magnum with hot high-recoiling 125 grain loads knows just what we are talking about here; especially true with a 2-inch barrel.

You will notice the lack of recoil and incredible lack of muzzle flip. Accuracy is scary good due to the control factor thanks to the ergonomics of this revolver’s design and the smooth quick action. Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation

Washington, DC --(AmmoLand.com)- The Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC) worked to explicitly exempt hunting, trapping, and fishing activities in legislation prohibiting production and sale of so-called animal “crush videos”.

H.R. 5566, the “Prevention of Interstate Commerce in Animal Crush Videos Act of 2010”, introduced by Rep. Elton Gallegly and Rep. Gary Peters, will ban the production of “crush videos” which depict animal cruelty.

“While we all oppose malicious cruelty to animals such as those seen in these videos, it was vitally important that the new legislation specifically address the filming, distribution and sale of legally produced hunting, fishing and trapping video and television programming,” said CSC Co-Chair Rep. Paul Ryan.

The Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF), in partnership with Safari Club International (SCI) the National Rifle Association (NRA), and the Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA) expressed concerns to the leadership of the CSC that the legislative language in H.R. 5566 should explicitly exclude videos and television programs showing legal hunting, fishing and trapping activities.

The CSC leadership worked with the sponsors of the legislation to incorporate this important exclusion.

Washington, DC –-(AmmoLand.com)- The U.S. Supreme Court today, in United States v. Stevens, struck down a federal law that could have criminalized the sale of hunting videos.

As reported on AmmoLand.com Safari Club International and the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation joined to file an amicus (friend of the Court) brief that explained how the law could apply to many hunting videos. The Court quoted SCI’s brief and relied, in part, on SCI’s arguments to hold the law unconstitutionally overbroad.

The law made the production or sale of a depiction (e.g., video or picture) of “animal cruelty” punishable by up to five years in prison. The Supreme Court found that Congress wrote the law much too broadly. The law made illegal any depiction of the killing or wounding of a live animal if the act being depicted is itself illegal in the state where the video is sold. As a result, videos of hunting activities that are legal where filmed would violate the law if the videos were sold in a state where that type of hunting activity is illegal. One example from SCI’s brief on which the Court relied was the sharp-tailed grouse, which may be hunted in Idaho, but not in Washington.

The Court also quoted from SCI’s brief to reject the argument that hunting videos would be protected by the law’s exception for videos with serious educational or scientific value.
