Taking turns, all members of the group taught classes at several gunsmithing schools across the country.

You quite literally can now save your shopping cart to any folder you want to and can put any name on that cart you want to.

Brownells Saved Cart is Back

This makes the possibilities limitless!

For instance, if you’re working on a 1911 for a customer named Bill Jones, you can establish a folder named “1911 Projects”. Within this folder create a saved cart for “Bill Jones”. As Bill’s project continues to grow you just add them to “Bill Jones” saved cart until you are ready to place the order. It makes project management and tracking very easy.

Or, if Bill Jones is a customer who has a lot of guns you make an entire folder for Bill Jones. Then you’d label this particular project, “.45 1911″ and so on as additional items are purchased for Bill Jones’s. If his next project is mounting a scope, you can put the items you bought for that project into the Bill Jones folder, but label this cart “Scope mount on Rem. 700, .243 cal”. Thus keeping all of Bill Jones projects together. Another really great feature of this system is that you can write yourself notes on the project you’re working on and save them for future reference. A fantastic way to keep track of your various jobs and projects.

Because of the complete flexibility of the new system, you can literally set it up any way you like. By the kind of project (rebarrel .45); by the name of the customer (Bill Jones); by the day date, or month date (October 2009); by the items you’ve ordered (Leupold Rings/Bases); etc., etc., etc. It doesn’t matter if you’re left brained or right brained, since you’re doing the labeling and you’ve put the carts into the folders, they are going to be where you think they should be. You just don’t have to conform to any body else’s ideas on filing!

What’s more, for those of you who had “Save(d) Carts” in Brownells’ old website before the upgrade in June to this new one, we have brought all those back in so you can access them and decide how you want to file them.

Brownells.com - -(AmmoLand.com)-We’ve been doing some “reality checks” around here last week, trying to get a handle on how our industry is doing and how we need to prepare for the upcoming year.

As we look back, it would seem that most all of us in the industry have had a fantastic run of business. Our industry has been recognized by shooters, non-shooters and even the economic whiz-kids on Wall Street, as one of the very few bright spots during this economic downturn.

You probably saw it in the huge volume of sales starting right at the election in November, 2008, peaking somewhere around Easter, 2009 and then sliding back closer to the traditional summer slow-down we always see.

In doing our analysis here, we asked ourselves the following three questions and tried to come up with answers. You might want to stop a moment and with a fresh cup of coffee, ask yourself these questions about your business and how you feel about your future.

1. Is this “Obama Gun Sale Bubble” over?
2. Is demand for firearms and ammunition coming down to the standard demand curve for our business?
3. What can we do for the remainder of 2009 and all of 2010 to match or beat those high sales in the “Bubble” months of 2008-09?

We came up with some answers, which I’ll pass along to you, but they really are only our opinions from our viewpoint. Hopefully you will find something in here which will be beneficial to you in your business.

We believe the insane demand level for tactical firearms is over and future demands for these products will come back down to the industry norms. Keep in mind, though, there have been a huge number of non-traditional firearms buyers making purchases of AR-15’s. So there are a lot of customers out there who will still want to accessorize and modify one of the world’s most versatile and popular platforms. Definitely still a market for AR-15 “stuff”, but a much softer one for the basic platform itself.

The conceal carry/home defense market, however, is starting to heat up and right now is the beginning of a “short boom”, not as significant as tactical rifles, but one nonetheless. We don’t know how much leg this market can get under it or how long it might run. It is getting lots of play right now in the gun press, so take a look at how you can get into it modestly and watch it closely.

We strongly believe the reloading and ammo markets are still underserved and have strong growth ahead of them. It will take longer to get these markets back to a norm because the primer shortage. The deep fluctuations/price increases in the metals markets from which most of these ammo components are made – lead, copper, brass has an impact on availability and prices. Our industry’s share of these markets is not even a wrinkle, and we have neither control nor any leverage we can bring into play. We just have to wait for the metals markets to settle out.

Shotgun and hunting markets did not seem to have the favorable run-up as the tactical weapons market. From what we think we see, there might be some returning strength. It looks like reservations for hunts have still to recover. We definitely expect those to slowly come back, but quite possibly not until folks are more comfortable the economy has settled down and a general recovery is underway. Hunts are discretionary, more easily put off.

For net results for 2009, don’t focus too much on beating year-over-year numbers. Our last year was way out of the norm. Instead focus on the year’s sales number. With the history we’ve had, it would actually be acceptable to have a 0% growth year in 2010 – it all depends when your fiscal year ends and where the “Obama Bubble” fell. Sometimes it’s just nice to have survived and to be able to move on!

FAIRFAX, VA – -(AmmoLand.com)- Three of the National Rifle Association’s top Junior Members have been selected to receive the 2009 Outstanding Achievement Youth Award, recognizing their accomplishments in the community, the classroom, and the shooting sports.

A total of $10,000 in scholarship money is awarded to the winners thanks to the generosity of Brownell’s, one of the world’s leading suppliers of firearms accessories and gunsmithing tools.

Eighteen-year-old Collin Wietfeltd of Hemlock, Michigan, won first place and a $5,000 scholarship. Weitfeltd’s impressive shotgun skills earned him spots on the 2009 U.S. World Championship Shotgun Team, the U.S. National Development Team, and on the 2009 ATA All-American Junior Trapshooting Team.

Wietfeltd recently returned from the Shotgun World Championships, held August 7-16 in Maribor, Slovenia, where he earned a silver medal as a member of the Men’s Junior Trap Team and finished in 7th place as an individual. Earlier this month, Wietfeltd took first place in the Trap Championships at the 2009 Shotgun Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In addition to his shooting skills, Wietfeltd is also very active in his school and community. At Hemlock High School, Wietfeltd is a member of the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA), the CPR Team, and is a regular name on the Honor Roll. Wietfeltd’s community involvement includes being an active member, volunteer, and coach with the Saginaw Field and Stream Club, serving as a coach for the Scholastic Clay Target Program, and as a frequent blood donor, being presented with the Donor For Life Award in 2008. In addition, Wietfeltd has participated in the Michigan State Youth Hunter Education Challenge and NRA Advanced Shotgun Camps.

Wietfeltd will attend Lindenwood University this fall on a partial academic/trapshooting scholarship. He will compete as a member of the Trapshooting Team and will major in Chemistry while completing a pre-dental study.

“Reviewing the applications for the 2009 Outstanding Youth Achievement Award made me very proud of all of the candidates, and speaks to the tremendous effect that the shootings sports and NRA programs has on young people. The shooting sports community gives so freely of their time, money, and most importantly their mentorship; not just to these three winners, but to all youth involved in their programs,” said Larry Quandahl, Manager of NRA’s Youth Programs Department.

Second place and a $3,000 scholarship were awarded to eighteen-year-old Tanner Brooks of Walkerton, Indiana. Brooks is a member of the Indiana State Rifle & Pistol Association and had place first in several competitions, including the Indiana State Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Championships and the National SCTP Skeet Championships. In 2008, Brooks was selected to attend the NRA’s Youth Education Summit (YES) in Washington, D.C., and also traveled to the NRA Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky. In his community, Brooks helped teach children about firearms safety by presenting the Eddie Eagle GunSafe(r) Program to numerous elementary schools.

Samuel Fowler, a seventeen-year old from Orchard Park, New York, took third place and earned a $2,000 scholarship. Fowler is an NRA Life Member, as well as a member of the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association. As a Smallbore Rifle shooter, Fowler has competed in the National Matches at Camp Perry for the past three years and numerous other local, state, and national competitions. In addition to his achievements as a competitive shooter, Fowler is also an exemplary student and has volunteered at a local Friends of NRA dinner.

All NRA Junior Members (or NRA Regular or Life Members under the age of eighteen) who are also current members of a NRA-affiliated club or state association, and have completed one NRA Basic Firearm Training Course are eligible for the award. Applicants must have additionally earned at least one rating through the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program, submit three letters of recommendation, provide a copy of their school transcript, and write a 1,000 word essay entitled, “What the Shooting Sports have Taught Me.”

In addition to these core requirements, applicants must also participate in at least five NRA-sponsored programs. These elective requirements may include, but are not limited to, presenting the Eddie Eagle GunSafe(r) Program, attending the Youth Education Summit, competing in the Youth Hunter Education Challenge, participating in the National Matches at Camp Perry, or attending an NRA Shooting Sports Camp.

Georgetown, TX - -(AmmoLand.com)- After that eight piece run of 6″ guns that we built to benefit the USPSA women’s program and called the “Infinite”, some folks apparently got their tongues tangled in the pronunciation and created some confusion in the market place. Not wanting to be confused with anybody else, we’ve dropped the use of that name.

We’ve decided to call the 5″ gun that evolved from that 6″ gun the “Apeiro”, pronounced “Apero”. It’s got a nice ring to it and I’m told by the Greeks that it means “something without end”. With our warrantee, I’d consider it appropriate. We’ve decided, too, that we’ll also substitute any other Schuemann 5″ ramped (Wilson/Nowlin/STI) barrel that will accept a front sight. ALL normal calibers are available. We should have pictures and specs on the website soon but here’s the main thrust of the press announcement:

“The Apeiro 2011 couples STI’s patented receiver with all the most desirable accessories in a factory firearm to produce a pistol that is as beautiful as it is reliable. The controls are STI International’s stainless steel ambidextrous thumb safeties and knuckle relief high-rise beavertail grip safety.

The full length stainless steel Tri-top bar stock slide features STI’s unique saber tooth rear cocking serrations and is cut to match the Schuemann barrel. The barrel is a 5.0″ fully ramped, fully supported “island” bull barrel, with the sight milled in to allow faster recovery to point of aim.

As an offshoot from above, you guys are certainly coming up with some original ideas for us to run through the Custom Shop. With the ideas that we’re seeing coming through, the thought has occurred to our Marketing Manager (Pauletta S.) and her staff that we should incorporate some of them into a limited run of “STI 20th Anniversary” pistols. What do you think, both of the idea of an “Anniversary” edition and of it being a limited run? What would YOU like to see it be?

We’re also beginning to get requests that we bring back our .22LR rifle, except not as “high end” this time. Just a good quality, moderately priced item. With the cost of ammunition these days, it may make some sense. Opinions?

Much to our surprise, the “original” size aluminum grip is out selling the “slim line” model by about two to one. I would sure have bet the other way. What do you guys think about us doing a “2011 Single Stack” aluminum grip?

Further good news for you: I’m asking the Sales Department to start quoting a 6-7 week lead time at this point. That means we’ve shortened it by seven weeks already this year (for most products). Any large order could change that at any time so you may want to take advantage of it while you can.

On the thought about doing a “knockoff” of Taurus’s “Judge” except in a .410/.22LR version: I bought a couple of (personal) “Judges” for R&D. THEN I found some neat little cylinder inserts that accepted .22LR at Brownell’s. I don’t think we’re gonna’ try and reinvent the wheel. That little “three-fer” (.45LC/.410/.22LR) is a fun, fun package at a fun, fun price point!

We are still taking orders for the “Competition” and “Tactical” rifles for August delivery and beyond. The competition models are outselling the tactical models by about 50%.

It has been brought to my attention that I am remiss in reporting the “Gun Used” statistics from the 2008 USPSA National Championships. Since the 2009 Nationals are just a couple months away, I better get it into this one. In the “Limited 10″ Division where almost anybody can play, we had about 49% of the guns being shot. Glock was second with about a third of that. In the “Limited” Division, we did much better with about 59% of the shooters using STI guns. The folks in second also had only about 1/3 that number. In the “Open” Division, it was a runaway. STI over 71%, second place under 20%. Winners have gone with winners again. Obviously, our outlay under the “Contingency Program” has gone up for another year in a row. Keep tapping us! It’s a pleasure working with you.

Now to something you really need to do… work on your strategic plan. This is a particularly interesting time in our industry. We all know and acknowledge that the boom we are seeing is a classic “bubble”, with prices driven up on particular guns or shooting platforms and ammunition caused by shortages. These are real shortages, but the manufactures at all levels, from raw goods through gun and ammo factories are not making major capital investments in new manufacturing equipment. They too know this bubble will burst and they will be left with excessive capacity for which they have no need, paid for with borrowed money. No cash stream from the expenditure, but still have to pay for the equipment. Frankly, to stay in business in the long view, these folks have to look at their world this way.

So where does all this turmoil find you? Have you gotten your business strategic plan in place? Obviously the factories do. But do you know what you’re going to be doing after the inevitable bursting of the bubble? You really need to stop and take a good look at your business’s future and your personal future. Preparing for this “future” ahead of time is called your business strategy. It can be overwhelming; for sure it’s going to be challenging to think about, much less create. To help put your mind in the right groove; “Strategy” is defined as “a plan of action to achieve a particular goal.” The word has its roots in the ancient Greek word strategos, which is a military term used to describe the art of a general. Kind of cool, when you think about it! You’ve got to think of yourself as a general as you create and manage the strategy to reach our goals for our business and our life.

To create this strategy for your business, the first thing to do is sit down and make a list of what it is you want to accomplish – what are the most important things to you and how do you want to make them happen? These are your goals. The stuff you’re aiming to have happen. This is not the time to take on the rebuilding of the world order. Start small and take some time to work on your list.

Secondly, you should also think about the things that you don’t want to do or you don’t want to happen. Not going broke is a pretty good goal, for instance. Once you have your do’s and don’ts listed, it becomes much easier to continue to narrow down your initial plan and start adding new exciting ideas, and get rid of the not so good ones.

OK, so here’s the order of things. Write down your goals. “My business is going to Survive” might be one to start with. Then you start on the Strategy to make sure you reach your goal. You really have two simple choices – 1) You can downsize as your market shrinks and work hard to contain costs. 2) You can diversify your product line or service areas and work to bring in customers.

Stretch your thinking. Think carefully about this and write it down. These goals are what you’ll base your strategic plan on. Everything you write down in the strategic plan column should directly correlate to the eventual success of your main goal. For instance, you’ve decided you want to open a gun shop. You have the tools and the skills necessary to do it. That becomes a goal. But, you need to define that goal. What is your goal for the next five years? If you want this to be a full-time job or even a part-time job, then make that your goal.

Part of your strategy for reaching this should be:

1. What will distinguish my work from someone else’s and how do I create a niche for myself?
2. How do I find and get customers through the door?
3. Where should I advertise to find those customers?
4. Are there certain sub-categories of gunsmithing that I’m really good at which my customers are looking for?
5. Also, think about your location. Are you where your customers expect to find your shop? Is it the neighborhood where potential customers will probably be coming on other business and swing by?

Do a lot of leg work and do your research thoroughly – discover what will make you unique and bring value to your customer and make that a highly important part of your overall goal.

Goal setting and Strategy is all about understanding who you are and what you do. It’s who you want to become and it’s your plan for reaching the goals that you’ve set for yourself. Remember however, that it’s also who you don’t want to be. A good goal will direct your strategies, which will then create boundaries around your goals. And with the right goals and the right strategies you can keep yourself completely focused on moving ahead and being successful – which is the goal for all of us!!

M4 feed ramps provide reliable feeding into the 5.56 NATO chamber. A dark gray, Parkerized finish helps prevent rust.

The bidding process will begin on the 1st of March 2009 and will conclude on the 1st of December 2009.

The bidding process is available to all persons 21 years of age or older that meet the Federal requirements for purchasing a firearm except ACGG Education Foundation Directors.

The following process will be followed to award the two rifles:

All bids must include the following information:
A. Amount of Bid
B. Complete Name
C. Complete Address
D. Phone Number
E. Any bid received that states $1.00 more than the highest
bid will not be accepted.

All bids will be sent to: ACGG EDUCATION FOUNDATION, c/o Bruce Farman Treasurer, 2563 NE Wm E Sutton Rd, Bremerton, WA 98311.

All bids will be opened on the 15th of December 2009. Should two or more of the same bids be received that are the same winning bid will be broken by using the earliest post mark bid received.

The winning bidder will be notified via phone on the 15th of December 2009. If no contact can be made by phone, a certified return receipt letter will be sent to the winning bidder. If no response is received within 10 days the next highest bidder will be notified.

Once the winning bidder acknowledges the notification as the winner, they will have 10 days to mail a certified cashier’s check or money order to: ACGG Education Foundation, 22 Vista Ln, Cody, WY 82414.

The purchaser will receive a written letter from the ACGG Education Foundation acknowledging the amount over the fair market value of the rifle as a charitable contribution for income tax purposes.

Lily, Kentucky - -(AmmoLand.com)- This 45 came in with a broken extractor. The gun belonged to the customers Grandfather.

The grand son would like to shoot it. Information had it made around 1925  and he already knew that Colt and Springfield parts do not work.  Both of the commonly used parts houses did not have parts.

I took the gun apart and found the closest starting point. I ordered a Ed Brown 70 series extractor from Brownells. The tech there said it might not work, which I was well aware of.

When the extractor arrived it was indeed all wrong.  This is where my Blacksmithing, Gunsmithing and Machining skill comes into play.  I reforged the back end, I had to add a lot of mass to the body then rough reshaped it. I then fit the extractor body to the slide.

After I got the extractor to fit the slide to where I was satisfied, I started to work the position the hook until it held for the correct operation.

I final fit the back end and machined the cross locking recess for the firing pin retention plate. The locking recess had to be totally moved.

I then machined the rear of the extractor to allow the hammer to correctly drop and engage the firing pin.

Because I heard the gun hung up on steel casings, I polished the feed ramp and bore and hood.

Basic test firing was good, but the slide would not lock back after last round. Checking revealed the slide lock was working.

Magazine fit was checked and found sleeve case was ok but inside was questionable. Deeper examination showed improper function. I made a careful adjustment to follower and then tested and was satisfied.

Final assembly and test firing was good. Slide did lock back after last round.. I blued the extractor to closely match the rest of the steel.

Lily, Kentucky - -(AmmoLand.com)- This week I have had a experience. One of the legendary Hatfield family came to my shop for help. This is one of the famous feuding families of this area. Years ago it was most likely shotguns, rifles, hand guns. This time it is a SKS in a synthetic stock. When the gun fires it is jammed shut. Can’t extract the shell. I was told that no one could fix it at the local gun shop. They referred it to me. I thanked the gun owner for the challenge.

Once I got the gun open I saw that the bolt was very hard to open, I made a mental note and kept on going. The chamber looked very dirty so I polished it out and test fired the gun. The bolt was jammed shut. Getting the bolt open I find jam marks on the cartridge case. So I go back and re polish the chamber. I repeated this several times going deeper and deeper until I got a partial result.

The bolt would partially extract the shell casing and then slam back shut on the empty. Questioning the bolt I took it apart and reset everything.

After doing all this and not having success I started thinking outside the box. Maybe the recoil system was wrong. I then started to rebalance the recoil system. I made an adjustment and reassembled the gun and test fired. I did this over and over again

My first success was a two to three round successful burst, but the bolt would not lock in the rearward position, I carefully kept on going and at last I had a perfect three round run and the bold locked back on a empty magazine.

Hatfield’s, McCoy’s and SKS Rifles

This video and web page will show you just how easy it is to install an AR15 free float tube on your AR15 upper.

This whole job, from beginning to end, takes 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on your skill level.  If you can tighten a few nuts, then you can install your own AR15 free float tube to customize your black rifle just the way you like it.

This section will cover installing a YHM brand ultralight carbine float tube ($144.95)

AR 15 Free Float Tube

Ok, lets cover the necessary tools. What you need:

Since this procedure requires removal of the AR15 barrel and barrel nut, you will need many of the same tools as you would when building a complete AR-15 upper.

Gunsmith Tools you will need:

• A good AR15 action block
• AR15 armorers wrench
• 1/16″ punch
• Snap ring pliers
• KG KG-11 Moly Grease 2 oz
• Gun Vise
• AR15 Vise Jaws

In addition, depending on the AR15 free float tube you choose, you might need a special float tube wrench. I opted to get this from YHM, didn’t need it, but since this was my first one, couldn’t hurt.

You will also need a couple punches. You just need a good sized (1/4″) soft brass punch and a steel 1/8″ punch. I got this punch set and really like it…. but you can find what you need at sears or harbor freight, etc…

That’s it for tools!

Now here are the step-by-step instructions:

1. Remove the upper from the rifle. Remove the handguards. Using the instructions listed in the above posts, remove the barrel from the upper receiver. (you don’t have to fully remove the barrel…. just the barrel nut/delta ring assembly, and you could leave the gas tube in the FSB) We will be assuming a full dis-assembly for this guide) You MUST remove any type of muzzle device first…. flash hider, muzzle brake, etc… If these are permanently mounted, then they will have to be removed. Depending on their method of attachment, it may be advisable to have a competent gunsmith remove them and reinstall them.

Now we need to remove the FSB (front sight base) from the barrel. The pins in the FSB are typically tapered. This means they can only be removed one way. (I am told that RRA and LMT use straight pins, not tapered, so those should be even easier) Look on both sides of the FSB and determine which side of the pins is the SMALLER end. It should be the left side, and we will be knocking the pins out from left to right. NOTE – Stag Arms has been shipping uppers with FSB taper pins on the opposite side of most uppers – so be sure to examine your FSB!

2. Support the barrel so that when we knock the pins out, we wont stress the barrel at all… I used a couple pieces of 2×4. Using a large diameter (~1/4″) brass punch, firmly knock the pins loose. Use masking tape all round the FSB is you are worried you might slip and scratch something. I must admit… on most of the barrels I have done, a couple sharp hits with a punch knocked the pins loose…. but I finally had one Bushmaster 20″ barrel that the pins absolutely would not come loose on. I ended up having to dremel the FSB down and then was able to punch them out, but I ruined the FSB. I was replacing with a flip up FSB anyway, so it wasn’t a great concern… but keep this in mind, should you come across one that is not very friendly.
It will take the most force just to break the pins loose… once they are loose, we can use the small punch to tap them all the way out:

3. Now, lubricate the FSB and the area on the barrel in front of the FSB with CLP, WD40, gun oil…etc… this it to ensure we will scratch the barrel as little as possible upon removing the FSB. Wiggle the FSB back and forth to loosen it… you may need to put the barrel back in the upper receiver to hold it for this step. Then, pull the FSB from the barrel, going slow and taking care. If you go slowly, you shouldn’t place any marks on the barrel from this step. Remove the barrel nut and delta ring as well:

4. Disassemble the YHM free float… into the float tube, aluminum barrel nut, and float tube lock nut.

5. Insert the barrel into the upper receiver. Apply a little moly grease to the threads of the upper receiver.

6. Install the barrel nut, and get it snug (this should be tightened just like any other barrel nut, torque it to spec)…. then tighten until you align with the next possible gas tube hole. Slip the gas tube in from the rear to ensure you are aligned:

7. Install the float tube lock nut. Thread it all the way to the rear, flush with the back edge of the barrel nut. I like to use a little blue Locktite on this, to ensure it wont back off in the field. A little Loctite makes all the difference!

8. Spin on the float tube…. right up to the lock nut. Ensure the rail is aligned with the rail on the upper receiver. I used a A3 carry handle, half on the receiver, and half on the float rail, to achieve this. Then tighten the locking nut. You can use the YHM tool for this, or a hammer/punch/flat blade screwdriver.

9. Now install the FSB back on the barrel, and the gas tube. Remember to put the roll pin back in the gas tube if you removed it:

10. Using the large brass punch, tap the taper pins back in, from the RIGHT, to the LEFT, this time… driving them home.

11. DONE! Wasn’t that simple? Finished product… time to go shooting!

There are several different types of free float tubes on the market, and their installation will vary slightly from this specific one… some have integrated barrel nuts, some require a strap wrench, but all have the same principles involved above.  Source: AR15.com
