When Ruger introduced its new version of this concept, the crew from Gun Talk Television gave it a thorough workout, and they show off what they learned on this week’s episode.

A collaborative effort between Ruger and Gunsite (the shooting school founded by Jeff Cooper), the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle is billed as the ideal fighting carbine. Cooper called for a relatively lightweight, hard hitting, do-all rifle that in the hands of an accomplished shooter was able to place accurate, sustained fire out to long ranges, yet was quick-handling and light enough for all-day carry.

Natchitoches, La - -(AmmoLand.com)- Every shooter wants to be better. More accurate. Break more targets. Reduce the time on a stage of action shooting.

So, how do you do it?

Sure, practice is important. Lots of trigger time will make a big difference… Getting instruction will fast-track your improvement. But getting into competition is a surefire way of getting better.

Competition is the engine driving improvement in everything: business, sports, dating, engineering, and certainly shooting. Shooting by yourself at the range can take you only so far. Working with an instructor always makes you better. Getting into competitive shooting, though, gives you purpose, and with purpose you have motivation to do everything better.

If you are a shotgunner, try trap, skeet or sporting clays. Rifle shooters have metallic silhouette, traditional high power and rimfire events, international style shooting, long range competitions, and more. Handgunners can go all the way from bullseye to international (Olympic style), to practical police to Steel Challenge to the action pistol events such as USPSA and IDPA.

For a bucket of fun, there’s three-gun competition, where you shoot handgun, rifle (usually AR-15 platform), and shotguns. This is defensive-style run and gun shooting, so don’t expect wingshooting to play much a part.

Why competition?

Even if you are just into a local shooting league for fun, competing drives the focus. You pay more attention when shooting in competition. You develop the ability to maintain your focus over a long string of shooting. That might be a run in IDPA – taking a few seconds — or a 250-bird shootoff in trap. When you compete, you also begin to practice with purpose. You’ll find others you can shoot with, and through that, you learn techniques which make you better.

You also shoot at events with people who are much better than you are. Don’t underestimate the value of watching top shooters in action. They move, shoot and think differently, and if you pay attention, you’ll learn. Besides, there are no secrets. Other competitors usually are quick to share ideas and tips.

Every shooting discipline has an organization that controls competition. Google is your friend, here. Put in “action shooting competition” or “sporting clays” and you’ll find the organizers. Add your city or state to the search and you’ll find events and locations near you.

You know what the hardest part is?

Showing up the first time. Here’s the key to making it easy: Call the shooting range, talk to the manager, and say, “Hi, I’m new at this. How do I get started?”

That’s it. Magic. If it’s pistol, rifle, shotgun, or all three, you just opened the door to being a better shooter. You also began the process of making friends with a lot of people who share your passions and your values.

Oh, one other thing. Many shooting sports have classifications, so you won’t be shooting against the world champions (even though you may be at the same events). There are classifications for your shooting ability and even your age. As you improve, you’ll move up to a higher classification. Sounds complicated, but the governing bodies of the sports handle it all for you.

Find a range, find a sport, make the call, and get into competitive shooting.

The show follows nine students, one of whom is Petoske, as they go through a concealed handgun course. The students’ backgrounds and histories range greatly, and some have never fired a gun before. George Harris is passionate about training, and has committed to working with both professionals and citizens for over 20 years at Sig Sauer Academy. As Director of Training for the academy, Harris brings to each class a personal history lined with certifications, extensive training and world-class competition shooting. Harris has also coached and was a Firing Member of the United States Army Reserve Combat Marksmanship Team. This summer, Sig Sauer Academy is offering numerous training classes and events, including the 1st Annual Sig Sauer Steel Challenge at the end of July.

Hunter has written 16 novels, his latest titled I, Sniper, and has also published non-fiction work, including American Gunfight, about a plot to kill President Truman.

Once the film critic for The Washington Post where he was awarded the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism, Hunter is known for a realistic writing style, especially when it comes to firearms.

“I’ve been a Stephen Hunter fan for 20 years,” said Gun Talk host Tom Gresham. “He’s one of the few novelists who gets guns right, but more than that, he actually makes guns important characters in his books.”

NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre stops in to discuss H.R. 5175, The Disclose Act, which has been making headlines as of late. The Disclose Act deals with campaign finance and disclosure of information from organizations that donate to political campaigns within a certain time near an election. The NRA saw H.R. 5175 as an assault on freedom of political speech, and fought the bill. The most recent amendment excludes groups based on certain criteria, including size and date of inception. Because of their opposition, the NRA is now just one of the groups excluded from this act.

Another author making his debut on Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk this Sunday is Attorney Mitch Vilos, a trial lawyer in both Utah and Alabama. Vilos’ law practice “focuses on primarily two areas of law, representing accident victims and handling criminal cases involving self-defense and weapons charges.” As a passionate advocate for self-defense and the law, Vilos has written three books on Utah Gun Laws, and has most recently released Self-Defense Laws of All 50 States.

Truth Squad - -(AmmoLand.com)- Congratulations to the most active, the most effective, and the fastest-moving gun rights group in the country — the Gun Talk Truth Squad. Only 48 hours after I broke the news to the nation’s gun owners about a stealth program to drive up ammo prices, you crushed this effort by the new administration.

Last Sunday (was it only three days ago?) on my radio show, I had as guests Gordon Hutchinson (author of “The Great New Orleans Gun Grab”) and Larry Haynie, owner of Georgia Arms. They told the story about the U.S. Department of Defense changing its policy, and how ammo remanufacturers (reloaders) such as Georgia Arms would no longer be able to buy millions of rounds of fired brass from the government unless they agreed to shred the brass.

Of course, that would make it useless for reloading. This would mean millions of rounds a month would be taken off the market, driving the price of ammunition even higher than it now is. Also, Larry told us he would have to fire half of his 60 employees.

Gordon alerted me, and within hours we put it on Gun Talk radio, live all over the country. You got angry, and being the Truth Squad — a follower of the “no shrug” doctrine — you acted.

Emails, faxes, and calls went to the offices of every Senator and Representative on The Hill. Senators Tester and Baucus of Montana (both Democrats) contacted the Department of Defense on Tuesday, and within an hour, they had a reply that this new, ill-considered, policy had been rescinded. Only 48 hours after I broke the news to the nation’s gun owners, you responded, and then THEY responded.

This, my friends, is what the Truth Squad is all about. It’s about generating a massive, suffocating, instant flood of rational and reasonable demands that our constitutional right to keep and bear arms not be infringed. What you did was create a “what the heck is going on?” response on Capitol Hill.

What’s next? A constant stream of “we are watching you” communications which tells all elected officials that we will not stand by and allow them to trade away any of our rights. They all need to see that an attack on gun rights is the third rail of politics, and we will do all we can to send them home to find other work if they support any such effort.

There WILL be more assaults on our rights. Many of them will come through agencies, where no recorded vote is necessary. Never make the mistake of thinking that we have won and can now relax. By their actions we know that they really ARE out to get us.

FOX Sports Network - -(ShootingWire.com)- Three broadcast veterans have come together to create a new type of firearms television show designed to display new products in innovative ways to a large audience. Beginning in July, “Guns & Gear” will air on the Fox Sports Network, available in 69 million households.

The show has been described as “Jay Leno in a gun room” and “Modern Marvels with guns”. Viewers will get high-tech, fast paced, demonstrations of the interesting and innovative products from the gun world. “As we know, gun buyers are interested in how their guns and gear work and what makes them better. The things that make a new gun or piece of gear new and innovative, are usually things that are small or hard to explain. That’s what guns and gear will feature,” says Ryan Gresham of Guns & Gear.

Hosting the show will be longtime outdoor and firearms television celebrity Tom Gresham, who has created, directed and hosted programs on ESPN, ESPN2, Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel and Fox Sports. Gresham also created and hosts “Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk,” a nationally-syndicated radio talk show.

Gun Talk Radio - -(ShootingWire.com)- “Tom Gresham’s Gun Talk,” a nationally-syndicated radio talk show, expands its reach with the addition of some 10 million subscribers on the Sirius satellite radio system in the U.S. and Canada. Sirius merged with XM satellite radio last year, and Gun Talk, which has been airing on XM, now has been added to Sirius. The combined subscriber base of Sirius-XM is 19.1 million.

“The merger of Sirius and XM forced a lot of programming changes,” said Tom Gresham, host of the show, “and many fine talk shows have been dropped. We’re delighted that we not only remain on XM — where we have a huge group of loyal listeners — but the addition of the Sirius system to Gun Talk’s distribution is huge. It’s a strong endorsement of the broad appeal of this show.”
