title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- The Arizona Game and Fish Department proposes to amend R12-4-304 to implement recently passed legislation and increase hunter opportunity by expanding allowable methods for the take of wild mammals, birds, and reptiles.

Amendments are also proposed to make the rule less restrictive, increase clarity, and improve consistency with other subsections of the rule. Amendments include:

Clarifying the use of crossbows; this is proposed to improve consistency and reduce confusion among hunters regarding the use of crossbows.

Allowing crossbows and bows that are drawn and held with an assisting device for the take of specific wildlife; this is proposed to make the rule less restrictive, increase clarity, and improve consistency with other subsections of the rule.

Reducing the minimum standard pull weight for bows; this is proposed to reflect current technological advances.

Allowing the take of mountain lion with shotgun shooting shot. This amendment was requested by members of the public during previous hunt guideline discussions. The Department believes this is an effective and ethical method of take and anticipates that the additional number of mountain lions taken using this method will be minimal.

Allowing the take of javelina and turkey with rimfire handguns. This amendment was requested by members of the public during previous hunt guideline discussions. The Department believes this is an effective and ethical method of take.

Allowing the take of upland game birds and Eurasian collared doves with a pneumatic weapon. This amendment was requested at a public Commission Meeting. The Department believes this is an effective and ethical method of take and does not in conflict with the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Allowing the take of cottontail rabbits, tree squirrels, upland game birds, and Eurasian collared doves with pneumatic weapons and hand-held projectiles. This amendment was requested by members of the public during previous hunt guideline discussions. The Department believes this is an effective and ethical method of take.

Allowing the take of coyotes and mountain lions with artificial light. This is proposed to give the commission the authority to open a season allowing the take of coyotes or mountain lions from dusk to dawn in game management units where coyote or mountain lion depredation on antelope, mule deer, and bighorn sheep are considered to be a significant factor in recruitment.

Clarifying that pursuit with dogs for cottontail rabbits, tree squirrels, upland game birds, and birds is a lawful activity. This amendment was requested at a public commission meeting. While this activity is currently allowed, it is not addressed in rule.

Allowing an individual to use dogs as a lawful method to take predatory and furbearing animals, small game, and nongame mammals. This amendment was requested at a public commission meeting. The sport of using dogs to pursue and take wildlife has existed in North America since colonial days. This rule amendment clarifies that the take of predatory and furbearing animals, small game, and nongame mammals with dogs is a lawful activity.

Referring to the Raymond Wildlife Area by providing the Game Management Units (GMU) instead of the Wildlife Area. This is proposed to reduce confusion regarding GMU boundaries.

The commission approved the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking at the Oct. 14, 2011 commission meeting and will review the final rulemaking at the Dec. 2, 2011 commission meeting. To view the Notice of Exempt Rulemaking, visit http://www.azgfd.gov/inside_azgfd/rules/rulemaking_updates.shtml.

The Department will accept comments through Nov. 16; to submit comments, call (480) 528-7986 or e-mail DMcGehee@azgfd.gov or rulemaking@azgfd.gov.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, or disability in its programs and activities. But it was the first stage which served as their last that decided the match.

Huspek shot the stage in 17.76 seconds scoring 16 A-zone hits and 4 C-zone hits giving her a stage score of 74.9472 points and an overall final score of 840.8861.

With her third consecutive Production title in sight, Jamrogowicz came up short, scoring 15 A-zone hits, 3 C-zone hits and two misses in a disappointing time of 29.91 seconds. Her final stage score of 30.9587 gave her an overall score of 834.2349, just 6.6512 points behind Huspek’s winning run.

“Nancy put in a strong performance and kept her focus all the way through the final stage of the match to take the win. This match, more than any other in the championship, demonstrated how suddenly a shooter’s fortune can turn in practical shooting, and Nancy showed how to take advantage of a winning opportunity,” said Michael Voigt, president of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Rounding out the top five were Ann Blosser of Kennewick, Wash., claiming third with 534.8511, Lisa Levis of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., in fourth with 527.6808, and Brande Ehrman of Meridian, Idaho, in fifth with 384.8382.

The match, which was held June 24-27 at the South East Idaho Practical Shooters range in Idaho Falls, Idaho, drew 325 top shooters.

Area 1 is one of the eight USPSA shooting regions in the country and is made up of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming, but shooters from 12 other states, as well as Canada, competed for the championship title in USPSA’s Open, Limited, Limited-10, Production, Revolver and Single Stack divisions.

The sport of Practical Shooting was formally established in 1976 but traces its roots back to the 1950’s and the quick draw “leather slap” competitions that grew out of America’s love affair with the TV westerns of that era.

Today the sport boast more than 19,000 shooters and represents the upper echelon of the shooting sports with many of its top competitors actively training law enforcement and military units on the shooting techniques and equipment developed in competition.

To learn more about the U.S. Practical Shooting Association, or to find a club in your area, visit www.USPSA.org or follow @USPSA_Shooting on Twitter.
Tags: Hornady Ammunition

Grand Island, Neb. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Team Hornady member Max Michel found himself on familiar ground when he won the Open Division of the 2010 Florida Open Pistol Tournament. The event is to the competitive shooting world what the Daytona 500 is to NASCAR.

The tournament was hosted by The Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, Florida which specializes in military, law enforcement and competitive firearm training.

The ten stages, designed for high round count provided Max with the perfect venue to test his winning shooting skills and strategy.

Max commented, “Winning this event for the third consecutive year is just as exciting as it was the first time. The match was designed using International targets, which are not only shaped differently, but they’re 30% smaller than US targets.”

“I used Hornady 124 grain XTP in my 38 Super Comp and it performed flawlessly. Knowing every Hornady bullet is consistent allows me to run the stages with complete confidence so my concentration is not broken.”

Founded in 1949, Hornady Manufacturing Company is a family owned business headquartered in Grand Island, Nebraska. Proudly manufacturing products that are “Made in the USA”, by over 300 employees, Hornady Manufacturing has become a world leader in bullet, ammunition, reloading tool and accessory design and manufacture.

For further information regarding Hornady products visit our web site at www.hornady.com.
Tags: U.S. Practical Shooting Association

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. —-(AmmoLand.com)- By just over half a point, Eva Micklethwaite managed to edge out Jenny Chu to pick up her first Area win and the coveted Women’s Open division title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Handgun Championships.

Micklethwaite, who was a member of the Team USA and helped win the gold in 2008 at the International Practical Shooting Confederation’s (IPSC) World Shoot XV in Bali, Indonesia, was also crowned High Lady, a title that goes to the top overall female shooter in the match.

Through most of the match Chu held the lead with five key stage wins among the women shooters. Yet Micklethwaite stayed within striking distance giving Chu a 30 point led early but closing the gap to just under 10 points by the ninth stage.

With just two stages remaining Micklethwaite made her move.

On the tenth stage Mickelthwaite picked up 14 points on Chu by scoring 18 A zone hits and 6 C zone hits. Chu put 20 solid A zone hits down range but dropped points with a B, C and D hit as well as one Miss and one No-Shoot. This gave Micklethwaite a slim lead of just 4.5637 points going into the final stage.

With the match slipping away, Chu tried to recover putting eight of her ten shots in the A zone with the remaining two falling in the C zone. She picked up just over 42 points on the stage but it wasn’t enough as Micklethwaite scored six A zone hits and four C zone hits giving her slightly more than 37 points for the stage.

When all the scores were tallied, Micklethwaite’s late surge put her just 0.5715 points ahead of Chu with a final score of 1120.3398 to 1119.7683.

“This was one of the closest matches of the season and nothing short of nail biter. Both Eva and Jenny battled all the way, even through the very last shot of the match. It’s a big win for Eva and one that is well deserved,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Rounding out the top five were Team Smith & Wesson’s Kay Miculek in third with 1098.2849, Valarie Levanza-Rosales in fourth with 1061.9108 and Lily Chung in fifth with 985.5508.

The match, which was held November 12-15 at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club in Mesa, Ariz., drew a total of 355 shooters who put a combined 100,000-plus rounds down range competing for regional championship titles in the Open, Limited, Limited-10, Production, Revolver and Single Stack divisions.

The USPSA Area 2 region includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii and New Mexico but shooters from around the country attended.

About USPSA:
U.S. Practical Shooting Association

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — -(AmmoLand.com)- It took until the eleventh and final stage at the 2009 Area 2 USPSA Regional Handgun Championships before Dave Sevigny of Smyrna, Ga. was able to overtake Nils Jonasson of Mesa, Ariz. and repeat as the Production division champion. It is the fifth time Sevigny has won at Area 2 Production title.

Jonasson started the match strong winning the first three stages followed by a third place finish on stage four, behind Sevigny and the stage winner Gary Chan of Anaheim Hills, Calif., then again taking the stage win on the fifth stage. Halfway through the match, Jonasson, a Grand Master shooter who won the Production title in 2007, found himself in first place with a lead of more than 34 points over the defending champion.

Then on the sixth stage Sevigny, who is the captain of Team Glock and himself a Grand Master competitor, began his comeback winning that stage and the next four. Despite remaining behind Jonasson, who managed to keep the lead by finishing second on stages six, seven, eight and ten, Sevigny put himself just over five points down but in a prime position to win the match on the final stage.

On stage 11, the 50-point 10-round final stage of the match, Jonasson finished with seven A zone hits and three C zone hits for a total of 44 points shot in a time of 6.99 seconds giving him a 6.2947 hit factor and a final stage score of 39.8894. He finished the match with a final overall score of 1424.6612.

Sevigny, who is known for both his tremendous speed and accuracy, proceeded to attack the final stage posting the fastest time of any production shooter, 5.83 seconds, and scoring 46 points on eight A zone hits and two C zone hits for a hit factor of 7.8902 that won him both the stage and the match. Sevigny finished the match with a final score of 1429.3106 and a narrow 4.6494 advantage of Jonasson to take the win.

“This was classic production division battle and demonstrates how competitive this division truly is,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association. “Dave shot an excellent come-from-behind match winning not just the Area 2 Championship but his seventh Area title of the 2009 season.”

Rounding out the top five in the Production competition were three Master level shooters. Gary Chan finished third with 1268.6316 points while Kyle Schmidt of Gilbert, Ariz. took fourth shooting 1239.7421 and Jim Levis of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. finished fifth with 1196.4295 points.

The USPSA Area 2 region includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii and New Mexico but shooters from throughout the country attended.

About USPSA:<br

Zimmerman of Commerce City, Colo. took the lead early winning the first two stages and holding the lead until the fifth stage when Shaver overtook him.

Despite the fact he didn’t win a single stage in the match, Shaver, who hails from Mission Viejo, Calif., was able to hold on to his lead all the way through the ninth stage and ultimately finish second with a score of 1371.2384.

Rubalcaba began to make his move by winning the sixth stage. He then proceeded to win the eighth, ninth and tenth stages. These three consecutive stage wins propelled Rubalcaba to the front and allowed him to take lead on the tenth stage.

Rubalcaba’s rally helped him finish the match more than 24 points ahead of Shaver and over 46 points ahead of Zimmerman and to post a final winning score of 1395.5247.

“With a little less than 50 points separating the top four shooters in the Limited-10 match, Steve had his handles full. His rally in the late stages turned the match in his favor and earned him a much deserved return visit to the winner’s circle,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Rounding out the top five were Zimmerman in third with 1349.1721, Clint Milburn of Surrey, British Columbia in fourth with 1345.5900 and Alan Liotta of Rosemount, Minn. in fifth with 1266.6925.

About USPSA: <br

The win represents Butler’s first and only Area victory in the 2009 season.

Butler, who is ranked a Grand Master himself and won the Area 2 Limited division title in 2008, took the Open division lead on the second stage and held it through the entire match by winning four of the eleven stages. Butler won the division with a final score of 1407.2097.

“Taran faced a very strong field of Open shooters yet managed to hold all of them off by shooting a strong match and picking up key stage wins. Not an easy feat when you realize there were 13 Grand Masters and 25 Masters gunning for the title,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Butler’s nearest competitor, Eddie Garcia of Mesa, Ariz., also won four stages but was never able to close the gap. The 1911 is also one of the most popular firearms sold in America.

Hobdell, who lives in Tempe, Ariz., won six of the 11 stages in the match on his way to posting a final score of 1417.6591 match points.
