class="wp-caption-text">Eric at the Gunmart Blog

United States --(Ammoland.com)- Answer: Suppressors.

Yes, suppressors – or silencers, cans, moderators, mufflers, or whatever your fancy. The next big wave to hit the gun industry will be those infamous “tools of assassins, cop killers, and mafia thugs“… or so Hollywood and those loony gun grabbers would like everyone to be manipulated into believing.

No, suppressors are not anything new to the gun industry… and many shooters are already entrenched in the splendor that is suppressor shooting, but they have yet to really go mainstream. They are legal to own in 39 states, but there has yet to be a “suppressor in every home” so to speak. In fact, the latest statistics tell us that suppressor sales are only in the twenty thousand per year range. When you look at the roughly estimated number of 80 million gun owners in the United States, there is a very large discrepancy between gun owners and suppressor owners.

All that being said, there seems to be a growing trend within the industry. Have you noticed that everybody and their momma are now making guns with threaded barrels? Have you noticed that even small gun companies are now getting into the mix?… some are even starting to produce their own suppressors. The NRA is now also speaking out in support of suppressors. It seems that they have finally come to the realization that suppressors are not the evil incarnation that they once felt they were, but instead are legitimate safety devises (group-think and yes-men be damned!).

Things within the industry seem to be all lined up for a big push, and I personally believe that consumers (and their money) are ready, willing, and waiting.

To truly get suppressors to go mainstream, we must get legislation passed to deregulate suppressors and remove the $200 tax stamp. We must end the ridiculously invasive acquisition process, and lift the complete bans in the eleven oppressive states that ignorantly think that they are keeping people safe. If we can get this to happen, then we might really see this market segment take off.

I know that for me personally the only thing that is really keeping me from buying several suppressors is that draconian $200 tax. I (and my hearing) would absolutely love to be able to put a suppressor on my “nightstand gun”, one on my carbine, one on my deer rifle, and one on my squirrel rifle. However, that $200 a pop tax stamp is a real deal breaker for me. Additionally, if we can get legislation passed to end the requirement for the tax stamp (or at least get the price tag down to non-disenfranchisement levels), you are really going to see a lot of new companies get into the suppressor game. Right now there are only a handful. Once the number of companies offering suppressors begins to significantly increase prices of suppressors themselves will plummet. Then they will be much more attainable for every gun owner who desires that extra level of hearing protection.

I really hope that this is the next legal battleground for us as gun owners. For one, I think this is a slam dunk win for our side. As the NRA recently pointed out, silencers are legally classified as firearms for regulatory purposes, but don’t meet the definition of a firearm. All of the tired old justifications for suppressor regulation just don’t hold water anymore. Each one has been thoroughly debunked in the numerous states that allow full suppressor ownership and use – including hunting. The opposition really does not have a debatable leg to stand on in this one.

Secondly, I think that the deregulation and mainstreaming of suppressors will be a great thing for the gun culture in this country. Simply put, suppressors make shooting much more enjoyable and safer. They are a great way to introduce children and new shooters to the sport of shooting and it is the neighborly way to take game animals. Deregulation would be a big win for everyone all the way around.

So are suppressors really going to be the next big craze to hit the gun industry? Will they be the next big legal battleground for us as gun owners? Are suppressors going to be 2012′s “must have item“?

I don’t really know for sure, but I do hope that they are. I wish more than anything right now that we could get rid of the ridiculous barriers to entry into the world of suppressor shooting and that we could start making them more attainable to the masses. Suppressor shooting is not what the far left has been characterizing it to be to the American public, and there is no time like the present to start changing minds and influencing our elected representatives to release suppressors from the stranglehold of government regulation.

About:
Silencerco

Salt Lake City, UT --(Ammoland.com)- SilencerCo, the leader in firearm suppressors manufacturing has launched the “How Loud Is It” campaign.

Following up on the launch of its “Silencers Are Legal” campaign which asked the questions “Did you know that silencers are legal for civilian ownership? Yes! They absolutely are!”

SilencerCo’s “Silencers Are Legal” campaign was created because only a small percentage of American citizens knew that Silencers are indeed legal. Silencerco/SWR introduced the “Silencers Are Legal” campaign to expand the silencer market out of obscurity and into the mainstream general shooting sports industry.

The campaign has showed great success with its “Yes, Silencers Are Legal” brochure, posters, and the Silencers Are Legal website. Now Silencerco/SWR is introducing a new video campaign that is intended to be educational as well as funny called “How Loud Is It?” To see the video, click the link here: http://youtu.be/kx8EJpL1Uhk

This video series will compare everyday sounds with sounds of suppressed gun fire. The premier episode compares a .22 lr suppressed pistol with a slap to the face of Silencerco/SWR’s very own CEO Joshua Waldron. Interesting enough the slap to the face sound metered only 2 db quieter than the suppressed .22 pistol.

Silencerco/SWR performed a market research survey where they interviewed individuals going into different gun stores and asked them whether or not they knew that silencers were legal. To their surprise only 3% of the people interviewed knew that they were.

This is what inspired Silencerco/SWR CEO Joshua Waldron to launch the “Silencers Are Legal” campaign. “Three percent is not acceptable” Joshua Waldron expressed, “how can we expect to be protected by lobby groups such as the NRA and politicians when our industry numbers are so low?” With the launch of the “Silencers Are Legal” campaign the last year has experienced over 10% growth, and the momentum is building.

Waldron has also been lobbying the lobbyists, so to speak, by working with the NRA and other industry giants to add the silencer market to their agenda. Also, before this year, no general firearm distributor dealt with silencers at all. This made it very difficult for silencer companies to spread the market to dealers without their class III license. However, Silencerco along with other silencer dealers, were able to get the largest wholesale distributor Acusport Corporation, to add silencers to their inventory.

“The recent acceptance of silencers by Acusport is crucial to our industry,” said Waldron, “because of our Silencers Are Legal campaign, along with Acusport’s client list, we have been able to convert a lot of title one dealers into class III dealers. This is a huge milestone for our industry.”

The “How Loud Is It” video series is intended to reach out further and recruit more people into our industry. This is just one step closer to making silencers mainstream and teaching the benefits of shooting with silencers to the general firearms industry.

“Hunting, and recreational shooting with silencers have many benefits that people just do not think of,” Waldron informs, “Bottom line is that a silencer makes a gun a safer, safer for your ears, and safer at the range because shooters tend to be less nervous when sound and recoil is greatly reduced.”

Watch the new series “How Loud Is It?” at http://youtu.be/kx8EJpL1Uhk

Read about silencer laws, uses, and benefits at www.silencersarelegal.com and learn more about Silencerco/SWR at AR15.com

Honeoye Falls, NY -(Ammoland.com)- In much of Europe they are considered neighborly. In Finland and Norway one can be purchased without paperwork at the local hardware store.

Even in the United Kingdom, their use is often encouraged for hunting and acquiring one is relatively easy.

I’m talking about suppressors, “cans,” or as long as one understands the name isn’t literally true, “silencers.” (In Britain, they’re known as “moderators.”) But while the United States remains the gold standard in preservation of the right to keep and bear arms, these useful accessories have been demonized beyond all reason.

Far from the modern popular and erroneous notion that suppressors were created for organized criminals and assassins, when Hiram P. Maxim (son of Maxim machine gun creator Hiram Stevens Maxim) patented the first suppressor in 1910 his goal was to minimize noise pollution. Ads for the product featured a character called “Dr. Shush” and Maxim himself imploring those at a firing range to “hush,” with another noting, “Girls like it when there’s no nerve-ripping report.” Seemingly obsessed with sound, Maxim’s company, Maxim Silencer Co., would go on to make car mufflers and offer consulting services on noise reduction.

While Maxim’s marketing may have focused on politeness, his invention’s contribution to hearing safety is of greater importance. Most shooters and almost all hunters have firsthand experience with the effects of unsuppressed gunfire and know the results can be dangerous. The average gunshot is well above 140 decibels, the level at which permanent hearing loss can occur. Every responsible shooter uses proper ear protection at the range, but it’s not an option in home defense and many hunting situations. And while a suppressed firearm is by no means silent, it does offer protection from dangerous noise levels. In light of this, suppressors should be viewed as safety devices, rather than demonized.

Unfortunately, by the early 1930s some in law enforcement came to fear their possible use by criminals. When the National Firearms Act of 1934 was enacted, “silencers” were included alongside machine guns and short-barreled shotguns. To make sure the average citizen couldn’t buy a suppressor, the Congress imposed a $200 tax on the accessory. Considering the average family income at the time was $1,524 per year, it was a highly prohibitive sum.

Today suppressors are legal to own in 39 states, but since they are subject to the National Firearms Act, the would-be owner must fill out a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Form 4, acquire the signature of his or her chief local law enforcement officer, and submit a passport-size photo to the BATFE along with a set of fingerprints. This information, along with the $200 transfer tax, is sent to BATFE for a rigorous background check. All of the information is then recorded in the National Firearm Registration and Transfer Record, the BATFE database of NFA firearms.

If this process sounds onerous, that’s because it is; but despite these regulations there are also 11 states (California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont) that ban the possession of suppressors outright. Still others allow possession of suppressors, but bar their use for hunting.

Such state laws are pointless, as laws governing suppressors, just as with all other firearm laws, aren’t followed by criminals. Rather than purchasing them legally, violent criminals mostly opt for crude homemade suppressors made of materials such as soda bottles and duct tape—not exactly the kind of thing those willing to be registered and pay the $200 NFA transfer tax are interested in.

The strict federal regulations are more than enough, which is why the NRA Institute for Legislative Action has been working to abolish unnecessary and restrictive state laws. In April, Washington enacted a law clearing up a peculiar situation in which suppressors were legal to possess, but illegal to use. That same month, the Kansas and Montana legislatures debated the use of suppressors for hunting, with Kansas adopting legislation allowing for their use.

The most recent blow for freedom was struck in Michigan on September 2, when Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette released a formal opinion declaring the possession, manufacture and sale of suppressors to be legal in the Great Lakes State.

Expressing support for the Attorney General’s sound logic were a number of Michigan law enforcement officials. Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf noted a suppressor’s usefulness in helping “keep the peace” between shooters and their neighbors. Others cited federal law as sufficient regulation, with Marquette County Sheriff Michael Lovelace stating, “Noise suppressors are a useful tool for Michigan firearms enthusiasts and the rigorous federal licensing process serves as a safeguard to ensure only law-abiding citizens can be in possession.”

An issue like reforming state suppressor laws may not get as much attention as high profile matters like Right-to-Carry laws and UN gun control schemes, but rest assured that the NRA-ILA is working to make sure law abiding citizens can possess and use these useful accessories.

By educating our fellow shooters about the benefits and misconceptions of suppressors, we can help bring the remaining holdout states into line with the rest of the country, and the world.

About:
Ammoland.com)- When the shooting public speaks, EHP founder Denny Snyder listens. EHP Electronic Hearing Protection announces the addition of the new EHD-1 to their line of sound amplification/hearing protection products.

The EHD-1 is the most advanced Behind The Ear ( BTE) unit available and will take outdoor enthusiasts hearing and protection to an entirely new level.

The EHD-1 increases the user’s ability to hear up to ten times their normal hearing yet compresses any sound over 85 db to a safe level. This two channel unit uses digital technology and has a omni-directional microphone located in the front. The EHD-1 has adjustable gain and with the easy to operate adjustable rolling volume control, the user can precisely set the unit for their own individual needs.

The EHD-1 can be set to use either the enhancement function or the telecoil mode with a simple three position selector switch. Each setting has its own unique feature which gives the user the ability to pinpoint sound- even in a noisy environment such as trying to hear range announcements during multiple shooting events or locating the direction of a distant gobble, bugle, or sounds of approaching game. Competition shooters are raving about their ability to hear the shot timer much sooner than their peers who use standard passive hearing protection.

The EHD-1 also has an internal telecoil coil which gives the user the capabilities of wireless communication. This function makes the EHD-1 suitable for cordless and digital telephones as well as walkie-talkie radios that utilize standard single-jack mini-plug connectors. A neck-loop/lapel microphone accessory available through EHD-1 gives the user the freedom of hands-free communication as well as Blue tooth capabilities.

The sophisticated EHD-1 digital technology utilizes a fully digital WDRC (Wide Dynamic Range Compression) amplifier which basically amplifies soft sounds such as leaves rustling from approaching game but does not amplify loud sounds such as the harmful affects of muzzle blast. The adjustable volume control has a maximum gain of over 50 dB which enhances the users normal hearing up to ten times. A noise reduction rating(NRR) of 29 dB coupled with CD-quality sound makes the new EHD-1 the ultimate tool for shooting and outdoor enthusiasts.

The EHD-1 uses one standard #13 Cell Zinc-Air battery and because it contains more efficient digital circuitry, battery life expectancy has surpassed the competition – giving the user up to 380 hours of worry-free unsurpassed sound quality and speech clarity that only digital technology can produce. EHD-1 comes with its own rubberized hard-case. Suggested MSRP is only $289.

Check out the new EHD-1 and the full line of hearing enhancement and protection products at www.ehphearing.com or call 1-(317)502-7942.
Tags: ESP - Electronic Shooters Protection

Brighton, CO --(AmmoLand.com)- One of the biggest secrets in the shooting sports is that it takes only a single blast to damage your hearing permanently.

Take the roar of a motorcycle running full-throttle for 40 hours straight, condense it into a split second, and you’ve got a good approximation of the sound energy generated by an average gunshot, wrote Hearing Loss News and Reviews.

It’s shocking, but even experienced hunters deliberately leave their hearing protection at home — believing they can hear their quarry better with the naked ear. While this may be true for the short-term, it can result in dramatic hearing loss over the years that puts hunters at a greater disadvantage in the field — and makes them a safety hazard.

That’s because many hunters, and target shooters, don’t fully appreciate the magnitude of the risk of shooting without correct ear protection.

Every time you pull the trigger on your shotgun, you’re assaulting your ears with up to 150 decibels (dB) of deafening noise.

While repeated exposure over 90 dB will result in permanent hearing loss, a single shotgun blast of more than 120 dB can do the same if you don’t use hearing protection every time you shoot.

Because your hearing depends on the health of hundreds of thousands of hair cells that line the cochlea part of your ear. The cochlea is the tiny, snail-shaped organ of your inner ear. Each hair cell in the cochlea detects a different sound. These upright hair cells wave back and forth in a fluid. By converting a mechanical noise into an electrical impulse, the hair cells work in concert to help your brain understand what you’re hearing.

Now imagine that a shotgun blast penetrates the cochlea so hard that thousands of these hair cells are broken, bent or sheared off entirely.

Since your cochlea hair cells do not grow back, you’re hearing has suffered permanent damage. And all of this happens in a millisecond — condensing year of slow hearing loss into a single, irreversible incident. It’s like getting hit by a massive sound wave — a tsunami of sorts that destroys the most sensitive components of your ears.

Do You Want to Spend $60,000 to Rebuild Your Cochlea?
At that point, the only thing left to do is spend up to $6,000 on a hearing aid or as much as $40,000 – $60,000 on a cochlea implant, according to the National Association of the Deaf.

Or of course, you could forget about these expensive hearing enhancements and instead go through the rest of your life asking “What did you say?”…and become the butt of all those jokes from your shooting buddies.

While you may think this can’t happen to you, a recent study from the University of Wisconsin suggests otherwise.

What the University of Wisconsin Discovered About Your Hearing
In the study titled “Recreational Firearms Use and Hearing Loss,” the university’s researchers studied the hearing capabilities of 1,538 Wisconsin men, ages 48 to 92. Three-quarters of them were hunters, and one in seven also shot targets.

After adjusting for other forms of noise exposure, including snowmobile use or the operation of heavy equipment, the researchers concluded that for every five years of recreational hunting by the men in the study, the risk of high-frequency hearing loss climbed by 7 percent.

So as you can see, without hearing protection, it’s not a matter of if — but when — you’ll suffer irreparable hearing loss.
In an attempt to safeguard their hearing, many shooters will take old-fashioned shortcuts. While these industrial-age shortcuts may give shooters like yourself peace of mind, they often fall short of providing you with the best possible protection that optimize the ongoing developments in digital technology.

A few examples of industrial-age shortcuts include foam ear plugs, cotton wads, bulky ear muffs or cheap custom-made ear plugs you find at shooting competitions and your local gun store made by the guy with greasy fingers.

It would be a crying shame to have your hearing depend on old-fashioned aids that can date back to the Civil War.
That’s why Electronic Shooters Protection (ESP) was founded in 1993 — to help shooters like you enjoy safe and frequent outings without jeopardizing your hearing.

He believed there should be a safe, effective way to protect a shooter’s hearing, while

still being able to hear natural sounds and normal conversation. From this desire was born ESP, the first company to manufacture custom-molded, electronic in-the-ear hearing protection that rely upon sophisticated micro technology instead of weight and bulk.

Each ESP has its own volume control. It allows you to hear ordinary conversation, the flush of a bird, the launch of a clay target, even the slightest rustle of a deer stepping on leaves as if you were wearing nothing in your ears at all. Depending on how you set the volume, even better.

The moment your ears are subjected to any noise of 90 dB or higher, advanced electronic

compression circuitry instantly activates, shutting off excessive dB levels. Shutoff is

instantaneous and unnoticeable. In the same instant that your hearing can be destroyed by a shotgun blast, ESP will save it. Immediately afterwards, you can still hear everything around you, even as others are shooting…but without risk of damage to your hearing.

ESP has developed three models of intelligent custom-molded electronic in-the-ear protection. Once you use them, you’ll never have another excuse for leaving your hearing protection in the glove box.

ESP Series 3 Digital: All your hearing protection in a single, intelligent product
The most advanced digital technology on the market, the Series 3 Digital produces the ultimate in smooth, natural CD-quality ambient sound. Multi-memory programming allows you to instantly select different modes for specific sound environments. The Series 3 Digital is our top-of-the-line model, flexible enough for targets, upland shooting and for stalking turkeys and deer. It’s like getting every one of our products packed into one form factor.

ESP Series 2 Digital: Take control of your hearing protection
The same CD-quality sound and digital transmission as our Series 3 Digital, it’s designed for hunters in the stalking mode. The Series 2 Digital lets you hear every natural sound without over-amplification. Target shooters can also use the Series 2 to listen for the trap machines. And of course, conversations around you will sound like you are listening to them with your naked ear. Intelligent, multi-memory programming allows you to instantly select different modes for specific sound environments.

ESP Series 1 Analog: Stop shooting-related hearing loss at an entry-level price
The same instant 90-dB cutoff protection, 25-dB noise suppression, custom comfort and ambient noise volume control as our digital models, at an attractive price. The Series 1 gives you the affordability of analog protection with many of the benefits of the digital products. It’s great for stalking deer and turkeys.

How They Work
Every product in the intelligent ESP Digital Series is custom made to your specifications. You provide us with a custom mold from one of our dealers, or you can go to your favorite audiologist.

We create an in-the-ear device that contains a microphone, speaker, volume control and battery — all connected by a tiny, reliable circuit chip. Each one is tested for quality assurance on our high-powered computers before it’s sent back to you.

Our in-the-ear products are made of a UV cured acrylic, which provide a semi-soft shell for comfort and seal — while remaining durable enough to hold their shape, keep their color and prevent against rips and tears. Because of the tight seal, they provides ±25 dB noise suppression even when not turned on.

The Jack Homa Pledge

Dear Fellow Shooter,

As the owner of ESP, I personally guarantee the fit and function of all ESP products for one full year from date of purchase. Since the 1970s, this life-long hunter and Pennsylvania native has devoted himself to the goal of becoming the world’s top hunter.

Along the way he has been inducted into the Bowhunting Hall of Fame and is the first hunter in history to kill all big game animals in North America during a five year period he named the Obsession Quest.

From operating bear and caribou hunting camps, to conducting his own bowhunting school and giving seminars across the country, Bob Foulkrod is a well known name in the hunting public and hunting industry. The combination of his expertise as a bowhunter, rifle hunter, and big game hunting specialist is unsurpassed in the modern world.

Snyder states “I have known Bob for many years- shared deer camp with him in the past and really look forward to working with him this year to promote hearing protection to all shooting sports enthusiasts.”

“Bob represents everything that is right about hunting and having someone of his caliber join EHP is absolutely fantastic.”

Foulkrod also commented “There’s an unwritten bond between all hunters. Denny is a fellow PA bowhunter and we bowhunters tend to stick together like family. Hunting is a family tradition and I’m glad to now be a part of the EHP family.”

Foulkrod hosts the television shows Bass Pro Shops, Winchester Legends, and Whitetail Revolution and joins world champion shooter Max Michel as one of the first two official pro staffers for EHP.

The goal of EHP is to be represented by the ‘Best of the Best’ and also takes pride that the electronic muffs are made in the USA- a rarity in today’s changing economy. Separate amplifier circuits and volume controls in each ear cup provide directional stereo sound and eliminate wires that can snag or break. Volume controls offer 50 dB gain to let you amplify low-level sounds as much as 8 times their actual level—without compromising protection from hearing damaging noise.

Pro-Mag Dimension Gold Series Electronic Muffs

An advance over earlier Dimension muffs, all Gold Series models are user programmable to change gain sensitivity, and now have an audible battery indicator that warns you when the batteries reach 50% and 90% discharge levels.

Auto shutoff circuit prevents accidental battery drain by cutting power after 4 hours of continuous operation.

Non-corroding gold-plated connectors provide superior conductivity for best possible sound quality, and fully enclosed military-grade circuit boards stand up to extremes of temperature and weather. “Smart” 8-bit microprocessor performs a complete diagnostic of the electronics every time you turn on the muffs, while a flashing LED gives you visual feedback that the diagnostic is in progress, so you know your muffs are working properly before you fire a shot.

Extra-soft, padded ProForm Leather ear cushions and a fully padded, adjustable head band provide maximum wearer comfort, even over glasses. Leather allows skin to breathe more naturally than synthetics during long sessions.

Dimension 1 models have all the features described above.

Dimension 2 models add input jacks and a 48″ cable with standard 3.5mm mini plug that let you feed the audio output from a radio, mobile phone, MP3 player, CD player, or other electronic communication device to your muffs. PRO-MAG™ – NRR 33 gives these muffs the most powerful noise reduction of the Dimension Gold series, yet with the same DLSC to let you hear normal sounds going on around you. Large ear cups have extra insulation for heavy-duty protection from the big noises without resorting to supplementary foam plugs.

View the entire <a
