title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- Firearms designs have been unapologetically biased towards right hand shooters.

There is justification for this slight, the primary reason being that nearly nine out of ten adults are right handed. Add in the long held negative stereotypes (‘sinister’ is derived from the Latin word meaning “left”) and you’ll understand why our “right thinking, wrong handed” shooters have been neglected.

The industry is largely transcending both superstition and lousy training protocols, such as forcing everyone to fight or shoot as right handed. Add in the realization that proper use of cover may require a shooter to be left handed.

But Guess what? Incoming doesn’t care what your preference is.

Despite its earned reputation as a good combat rifle, the M16-series remains one of the only modern designs still in wide spread use that is not ambidextrous. An obvious problem here is the magazine catch. The design of the release is ergonomic for a righty, but not so much for the southpaw.

Down-N-Dirty Outdoors

LEWISBURG, Ky. --(Ammoland.com)- Just in time for spring gobbler season, Down-N-Dirty Outdoors has launched a new website feature that’s sure to help you bag old Tom by teaching you to become more fluent in talking turkey.

Success in spring turkey hunting relies almost entirely on vocal interaction with the birds to call them in. In fact, at this time of year, it’s almost impossible to harvest a turkey without calling out to them. The key to success is being able to converse with the birds in order to talk them into range. Knowing what to say and when to say it are critical skills.

They don’t just call it “talkin’ turkey” for nothing.

To increase your chances of success this spring, DND has created a new interactive feature of its www.downndirtyoutdoors.com website that will show you each of its calls and, more importantly, how to use them to talk the talk. The site offers streaming video on each product’s page that will teach you how to use that call, from the easiest box calls to pot calls to the more complex diaphragm calls. It’s through these videos that you can see and hear the different techniques of clucking, yelping, purring, cutting and cackling from some of the nation’s best callers. Then you can begin to practice those techniques, yourself. That’s why DND has designed this website feature to assist turkey hunters in holding a compelling conversation with the birds that draws them in close.

Certain calls may work on a given day, and others may not because each call has its own distinctive sound. Likewise, your style of calling makes a big difference. A gobbler may answer to one call or style but not to another, so it’s important to have a few different calls in your arsenal. The secret is knowing when and how to use them effectively. Practice being the key to success, DND Outdoors is here to help your turkey season be as successful as possible. Log on to www.downndirtyoutdoors.com to listen, learn, and then go out and harvest a big ol’ long beard!

Through experience and determination, Down-N-Dirty Outdoors has come to offer hunters the most advanced line of game calls available today. From the unique-looking diaphragms to the exceptionally designed pot calls, the entire line is built by hand with one goal in mind: to provide the finest quality, affordable game calls that absolutely mimic your prey. There are no gimmicks; no pretty faces; no bull. The calls from Down-N-Dirty Outdoors are just the finest calls available on the market today, and they will make you a more successful hunter for years to come.

AmmoLand Gun News

Manasquan, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- Think your AR can’t be as accurate as the high end custom AR above? Think again.

The AR or AR15 rifle is plenty accurate. Oh, yours isn’t? Maybe it’s time to look at some options to make your rifle the envy of the rifle range.

Like all rifles the AR is made up of components; each playing a role in its accuracy.

Though shooting style may differ from shooter to shooter, for example, those who participate in service rifle matches have different requirements from an AR used for long range hunting. However, high quality components are crucial for both top scores or long range hunting success.

Whether you are building a black rifle from parts or customizing your existing AR rifle to better suit your shooting style, here’s a rundown of what works for me and a suggestion where to spend your hard earned dollars to maximize black rifle accuracy.

The barrel: the heart of an accurate rifle.
The accuracy of any rifle begins and ends with its barrel. This should be the greatest single expenditure when looking to wring the most from your AR. Many rifle manufacturers use decent barrels capable of good accuracy. If your rifle isn’t accurate enough for your liking, replace the barrel first and choose a reputable barrel maker. Shilen Rifles makes one of the finest. Their drop-in barrel is available complete with matching bolt chambered, headspaced and ready for installation. Their barrels are available in many contours. Don’t skimp on a barrel.

The process of installing an aftermarket barrel is usually combined with installation of free float tubes. If you are utilizing a drop-in barrel, the barrel simply fits into the receiver and is held in place by the barrel nut. The nut must be aligned so that the gas tube clears the holes in the nut. Most free float tubes then screw onto the barrel nut.

If you would like to see this and other procedures, go to Brownell’s website. It has one of the most comprehensive video collections available on building an AR Rifle. www.brownells.com

Changing An AR-15 Barrel Video

Free Float Tubes
Any kind of pressure put on a rifle barrel will cause the impact of the bullet to shift. For this reason, I like free float tubes on my AR. If building an AR with some sort of attachment for a bipod, mount it on the free float tube so it makes no contact with the barrel whatsoever to include the gas block.

Free float tubes can be installed on CMP rifles by removing the heat shields from the issued hand guards then reinstalling the hand guards over them. Most shooters use a second set dedicated to this use as the original hand guards do need to be modified.

Free Float Tubes come in an array of styles and materials and are a personal preference AR accessory.

Upper and Lower Receiver
The upper and lower receivers for the AR- 15 are Mil- Spec. In theory, the parts are interchangeable. The AR- Style .308 is not, but I foresee one or two designs taking the lead and becoming the “standard”.

The upper and lower receivers are simply nothing more than housings to keep the guts of the rifle from flying apart. The upper holds the barrel in place and houses the bolt carrier. The lower houses the hammer and trigger while holding the buttstock and pistol grip in place.

J P Enterprises AR-15 Tensioning Pin

Though many shooters feel the slop between the upper and lower receiver robs accuracy, I have yet to experience this. But, the slop rattle can be quite aggravating and distracting. If the rattling halves bother you, an Accu-wedge or JP Tension Pin can remove this slop. I prefer glassing the two halves. To do this, a minimum of tools will be needed:

Bedding Compound – I like Brownell’s Acraglas Gel, 4 ounce kit – This will provide more than enough bedding compound to glass an AR and still have plenty to bed a bolt action rifle or two. This kit comes with everything you will need to do a professional-looking job. One word of caution, the release agent included in the kit prevents the two pieces from sticking together. It is imperative to use this release agent according to the directions.

Degreasing Agent – I use denatured alcohol.

Shim stock – The thickness of the shim depends on the desired tightness. I prefer a .005 of an inch thick shim stock (the thickness of two sheets of typing paper) though many match gun builders use a shim up to .012 of an inch thick.

Degrease the lower receiver where the lug from the upper fits into it. Apply the release agent to the upper receiver and the rear takedown pin. I also put a small piece of clay in the hole in the lug. The pin will not be pushed all the way through but will fill up with the Acraglas; the clay prevents this.

Apply a small amount of glass in the pocket of the lower receiver where the lug will sit. To get good adherence, I will occasionally rough up the receiver with a Dremel tool and a small bur and degrease it again. Once the glass is applied in the pocket, put the shim on the top of the lower receiver. Slowly close the two halves. I put the shim just behind the ejection port; the two halves should not close. Apply pressure to the upper receiver; enough so you can start the takedown pin in the lug. Do not push the pin all the way through.

The deed is now done. All that is left to do is clean up any glass that runs out and set aside, preferably in a horizontal position until the glass sets up. Once the glass is set up, remove pins and clean up all residue. The rifle is then ready to reassemble and shoot and viola, no more rattle.

The only specialized feature on an upper receiver other than the cool factor is matching it to your shooting style. If you are a Civilian Marksman Program (CMP) shooter, you will need to choose an upper that will accept rear sights, like the A2 upper. For a long range shooter or hunter who plans on mounting optics, a flat top or optic-friendly high rise upper is in order. I prefer the high rise to a standard flat top. I want to keep my optics as close to the receiver and bore as possible instead of using ultra high scope rings.

Don’t get too worked up over the upper and lower receivers and don’t overspend here.

JP EZ Trigger

The Trigger
The standard issue trigger isn’t conducive to accuracy unless you are familiar with a two stage trigger. I like a crisp, single stage trigger that breaks at 3- 3½ pounds. The JP EZ trigger is one of my favorites and as its name implies is rather easy to install. For service rifle shooters who are restricted to a 4 ½ pound trigger pull, a CMP set up is available. This is achieved by springs rather than sear and trigger engagements. This is one area in which I would not cut corners.

The installation is better watched than explained. JP Rifles has a wonderful video of the trigger installation and set up on their website. Go to www.jprifles.com/1.4.8.1_ezt.php to watch the video of the complete installation. Trigger control is important, but again it is a luxury and will be priced accordingly.

Stock
Often looked upon as an oversight, a stock is important to long range shooting. A consistent stock weld is imperative to consistent success when shooting long range. The Magpul Precision Rifle/Sniper stock is the choice for serious shooters. It is fully adjustable both for length and height and facilitates optic mounted ARs. These are premium made stocks and priced as such. A less expensive option is the standard A2 style buttstock and an aftermarket cheek piece to attach to it. While not high speed, it performs the same task and is a couple hundred dollars cheaper.

Magpul Precision Sniper Rifle Stock

Optics
Optics is a matter of opinion. Red dots are fine for the new 3 gun shoots and the sort, but once the shot ranges over 400 yards, a traditional scope complete with a range-finding type reticle is the choice of long range shooters. Many shooters like the Mil – Dot reticle, however, I find the distance between the dots too extreme for shots over 500 yards. Nikon’s Bullet Drop Compensator (BDC) used in tandem with their Spot On software program makes shooting long range child’s play. Purchase the best optics you can afford and learn how to use them.

Getting the most out of an AR isn’t difficult, but does take some planning. Determining your intention and expectations for the rifle is important. Can an AR keep up with a bench rest target rifle? Probably not, but it was never designed to do so. The bolt action rifle as we know it has a big head start on the relative newcomer, the Modern Sporting Rifle.

AR variations have already taken the rifle to heights even Stoner could have not imagined and the best is yet to come.

About Steve Felgenhauer:
Ammoland.com)- Smith & Wesson Pro Shooting Team Captain Julie Goloski-Golob is writing a how-to book for aspiring shooters—and current shooting enthusiasts who want to hone their skills.

Skyhorse Publishing of New York has tentatively scheduled Julie’s first book for an October 2011 release. The working title is Shoot! A Guide to Shooting and Competition, but Julie cautioned that this may change.

“The title isn’t set in stone but it describes the book well and it’s a bit catchy. It’s what we are calling my project at the moment,” she said with a laugh.

Skyhorse President and Publisher Tony Lyons said Julie’s book is a good fit both with the Skyhorse catalog and with his company’s publishing philosophy.

“Julie’s book looks like a very promising addition to our well-known sports and outdoors list,” he said.

“But beyond that, we like to publish books whose authors are renowned experts in the subject matter. For firearms handling and shooting in competition, it would be hard to find a more knowledgeable author than Julie Golob,” he added. “We’re very happy to be working with her to make this a high-quality, attractive title that will appeal to both new and experienced shooters.”

Julie, who recently added both the Ladies Production and the Ladies Limited World Champion trophies (at the 2010 World Speed Shooting Championships in California) to her impressive list of competition wins, said that writing a book is something she has always wanted to do.

“Becoming an author is a way to share with a wide audience some of what I’ve learned about shooting over the years,” Julie said. “I enjoy writing and telling people about the shooting sports. I’m extremely excited that Skyhorse wants to work with me to accomplish that,” she added. “This seems like a terrific opportunity.”

Julie said that several publishers showed interest, but that in the end Skyhorse seemed the best home for her first book.

“I like the fact that Skyhorse publishes such a wide variety of books—not only books about shooting and outdoor sports, though they’re strong in those areas—but books about all kinds of other interesting subjects that attract different kinds of readers.”

Julie hopes her book will prove a valuable resource for current shooting-sports enthusiasts, but will also serve as an accessible, relevant, and intelligent guide to newcomers, even people who may have never handled a firearm.

“I try to see a big picture,” Julie said, “and that involves getting more people, especially but not exclusively women and young people, involved in the shooting sports. If my book can contribute to that and to shooting safety, and people enjoy reading it, I’ll be very pleased,” she added.

Author Julie Goloski-Golob is one of the most accomplished professional shooters in the world. She serves as captain and manager of the 22-member Smith & Wesson Shooting Team, which includes other renowned professional marksmen such as Jerry Miculek, Kay Miculek, and Doug Koenig. During her eight years with the elite U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU), Julie was named both U.S. Army Female Athlete of the Year and AMU Athlete of the Year. Julie credits her Army service with providing a solid foundation of training, shooting experience, and range time, which she relies upon to this day in her pro career.

Julie has won more than 80 titles in international, national, regional, and state shooting competitions, including most recently both the 2010 Ladies Limited and Ladies Open World Champion trophies at the World Speed Shooting Championships in Piru, California. Luckily a new web-based video on GunsAndHunting.com walks owners through the process, step-by-step-after Shooting Illustrated Assistant Editor Bob Boyd completes the disassembly with the help of a little electronic wizardry in 10.5 seconds.

“It features the kind of still photography that guides shooters through the process, in a video format,” said Guy J. Sagi, editor in chief of Shooting Illustrated. “It’s short, informative and produced with the same lively approach we employ in the magazine. And it’s free. /> This video and web page will show you just how easy it is to install an AR15 free float tube on your AR15 upper.

This whole job, from beginning to end, takes 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on your skill level. If you can tighten a few nuts, then you can install your own AR15 free float tube to customize your black rifle just the way you like it.

This section will cover installing a AR 15 Free Float Tube

Ok, lets cover the necessary tools. What you need:

Since this procedure requires removal of the AR15 barrel and barrel nut, you will need many of the same tools as you would when building a complete AR-15 upper.

Gunsmith Tools you will need:

A good AR15 Vise Jaws

In addition, depending on the AR15 free float tube you choose, you might need a special float tube wrench. I opted to get this from YHM, didn’t need it, but since this was my first one, couldn’t hurt.

You will also need a couple punches. You just need a good sized (1/4″) soft brass punch and a steel 1/8″ punch. I got this punch set and really like it…. but you can find what you need at sears or harbor freight, etc…

That’s it for tools!

Now here are the step-by-step instructions:

1. Remove the upper from the rifle. Remove the handguards. Using the instructions listed in the above posts, remove the barrel from the upper receiver. (you don’t have to fully remove the barrel…. just the barrel nut/delta ring assembly, and you could leave the gas tube in the FSB) We will be assuming a full dis-assembly for this guide) You MUST remove any type of muzzle device first…. flash hider, muzzle brake, etc… If these are permanently mounted, then they will have to be removed. Depending on their method of attachment, it may be advisable to have a competent gunsmith remove them and reinstall them.

Now we need to remove the FSB (front sight base) from the barrel. The pins in the FSB are typically tapered. This means they can only be removed one way. (I am told that RRA and LMT use straight pins, not tapered, so those should be even easier) Look on both sides of the FSB and determine which side of the pins is the SMALLER end. It should be the left side, and we will be knocking the pins out from left to right. NOTE – Stag Arms has been shipping uppers with FSB taper pins on the opposite side of most uppers – so be sure to examine your FSB!

2. Support the barrel so that when we knock the pins out, we wont stress the barrel at all… I used a couple pieces of 2×4. Using a large diameter (~1/4″) brass punch, firmly knock the pins loose. Use masking tape all round the FSB is you are worried you might slip and scratch something. I must admit… on most of the barrels I have done, a couple sharp hits with a punch knocked the pins loose…. but I finally had one Bushmaster 20″ barrel that the pins absolutely would not come loose on. I ended up having to dremel the FSB down and then was able to punch them out, but I ruined the FSB. I was replacing with a flip up FSB anyway, so it wasn’t a great concern… but keep this in mind, should you come across one that is not very friendly.
It will take the most force just to break the pins loose… once they are loose, we can use the small punch to tap them all the way out:

3. Now, lubricate the FSB and the area on the barrel in front of the FSB with CLP, WD40, gun oil…etc… this it to ensure we will scratch the barrel as little as possible upon removing the FSB. Wiggle the FSB back and forth to loosen it… you may need to put the barrel back in the upper receiver to hold it for this step. Then, pull the FSB from the barrel, going slow and taking care. If you go slowly, you shouldn’t place any marks on the barrel from this step. Remove the barrel nut and delta ring as well:

4. Disassemble the YHM free float… into the float tube, aluminum barrel nut, and float tube lock nut.

5. Insert the barrel into the upper receiver. Apply a little moly grease to the threads of the upper receiver.

6. Install the barrel nut, and get it snug (this should be tightened just like any other barrel nut, torque it to spec)…. then tighten until you align with the next possible gas tube hole. Slip the gas tube in from the rear to ensure you are aligned:

7. Install the float tube lock nut. Thread it all the way to the rear, flush with the back edge of the barrel nut. I like to use a little blue Locktite on this, to ensure it wont back off in the field. A little Loctite makes all the difference!

8. Spin on the float tube…. right up to the lock nut. Ensure the rail is aligned with the rail on the upper receiver. I used a A3 carry handle, half on the receiver, and half on the float rail, to achieve this. Then tighten the locking nut. You can use the YHM tool for this, or a hammer/punch/flat blade screwdriver.

9. Now install the FSB back on the barrel, and the gas tube. Remember to put the roll pin back in the gas tube if you removed it:

10. Using the large brass punch, tap the taper pins back in, from the RIGHT, to the LEFT, this time… driving them home.

11. DONE! Wasn’t that simple? Finished product… time to go shooting!

There are several different types of free float tubes on the market, and their installation will vary slightly from this specific one… some have integrated barrel nuts, some require a strap wrench, but all have the same principles involved above. Brownells.com

Brownells.com - -(AmmoLand.com)- A new season has past and with it comes the looking forward to the beginning of hunting season. Nothing beats crisp, clear mornings and the comfortable afternoons with the sweep of changing colors making a trip to the fields and timbers a pure joy. I love it the air is fresh and has that “fall” smell about it. Crops being harvested, leaves turning, and the hint of cooler weather to come.

For many of us, this is the only time our guns come out of closets and gun safes. When preparing for an upcoming hunt, you really need to get your favorite rifle or your granddad’s shotgun out and get them cleaned and sighted in.

Guns are like almost anything else they need to be taken care of and used a little once in while to keep them in good working order and also to be sure they are safe to use. This is the key to a successful hunt: clean, safe firearms, and you and your buddies getting home safely (and the dog, too, of course), with plenty of game to put on the table is usually all most of us ask for. Besides, getting out after critters is just plain fun and it beats the heck out of holding the couch down!

For this installment of Beginner’s Bench, I decided to pull out a Remington 870 that’s been in my gun safe for longer than I care to think about and I’m pretty sure in dire need of a good cleaning before I head out hunting. With pheasant season opening this weekend here in Iowa, I decided I really needed to get it ready and also try to find a place to hunt.

When doing some research into the products I would need for this project, I spoke quite a bit with one of our Gunsmith Techs, Mike Watkins. He explained when it comes to guns, people generally are looking for a product that will give them the best overall results.

“Our customers are a very smart group of people when it comes to their firearms. They want to know what the best product is and what’s going to give them the most outstanding results for their particular project. Since you’re cleaning a 20 gauge shotgun, Brownells EZ-Soak and Brownells Shotgun Wad Solvent will both do a great job not only on a shotgun, but on AR-15’s, .22’s, and any other gun you want to clean really, really well.”

This sounded good to me and really, paying a little less for something that won’t do a superior job doesn’t make sense to me either. My granddad always said, “If you’re going to do a job either for yourself or someone else, you just as well do it right the first time.” I agree; there’s nothing more aggravating than having to go back and redo something again and again. After all, before I went to college I did construction work for thirteen years pouring concrete and building houses, definitely a quality driven pursuit.

Once again, I logged on to brownells.com to check out some of the products I would need. I just typed in “Shotgun cleaning” and got lots of options to review. When cleaning the bore of a shotgun, or any other gun you own, you’ll need a handy tool called a Dewey Rod. Brownells sells a large variety of these and they come in many different lengths, calibers, gauges and materials depending on which firearm you’re cleaning. These rods come in nylon-coated spring steel for all but shotguns, or nylon-coated aluminum for shotguns to helps protect the bore; or uncoated stainless steel for all but shotguns and uncoated aluminum for shotguns. Since I was cleaning just the shotgun, I decided to go with a 34″ nylon-coated aluminum shotgun J Dewey Rod which being in two screw-together sections, can be taken apart and easily stored for the next cleaning job. These also come with a removable threaded nylon patch loop, and a solid fixed handle to ensure a good strong grip on the rod when you’re running patches and brushes through the bore. Since it had been several years since I had really cleaned the shotgun, I chose a Heavy Weight Nylon Shotgun Bore Brush which come in 3 Paks or in a Pak of a dozen. These tough brushes are extra-stiff with large diameter bristles that are safe on the inside the barrel and won’t deteriorate when using cleaning solvents such as the Brownells EZ Soak and the Brownells Shotgun Wad Solvent that I’m using.

The beauty of these brushes is you can screw them right onto the end of the J. Dewey Rod when you’re ready to start cleaning. As I mentioned in the first Beginner’s Bench article, always, always check to make sure your firearm is unloaded and the safety is on before doing any work on a gun. With a Remington 870, this is pretty easy to do. Simply push in the little release button on the front of the trigger guard and pull the slide handle back. If there are any shells left in the shotgun this will kick them out. After doing this a couple of times, I left the slide back in the “open” position and this left the ejector port open so I could look inside the action to make absolutely sure there were no shells left in the shotgun.

To get started, I went into my work area which is well lighted and has good ventilation. When working with any solvents or cleaning chemicals, it’s always a very good idea to keep this in mind. Also, have some old rags, towels, or floor dry handy in case of spills.

Ready to start cleaning, I unrolled myBrownells Bench Mat, which is nice because it’s flexible, and has a non-slip backing on it. They absorb a lot of liquid without it dripping onto the bench and floor, and can be washed out after each use. The surface on these is also nice and soft so you don’t have to worry about scratching your gun. But, you’ve got to keep it clean.

Remington 870 Shotgun Express Turkey Camo

Laying the shotgun on the mat, I unscrewed the magazine cap on the end of the magazine tube and gently pulled off the forearm. Next, slid the barrel off. The next step was to take the trigger assembly out by carefully tapping the pins out with an appropriately-sized punch. With the pins removed, simply pull lightly and the entire assembly will come right out. Whenever you’re disassembling a gun, make sure you keep track of every part you remove and try to keep each step in mind. Sometimes it doesn’t hurt to keep a pen and paper nearby just in case you need to take a few notes along the way.

I assembled the Dewey Rod and screwed the Nylon Shotgun Bore Brush onto the end. Next, I got out the jar of Brownells EZ Soak and shook it vigorously for a few minutes to make sure it was mixed well. Before I go much further, I should recommend using safety glasses whenever you’re using solvents, especially with a bore brush. Once it’s coated with chemicals, you run the risk of splatter when you pull it out of the bore (imagine running your finger across a wet toothbrush.) Trust me, you don’t want this stuff in your eyes.

Placing the jar of Brownells Shotgun Wad Solvent on the mat, I dipped the brush into the liquid and started pushing it down the barrel scrubbing it back and forth a little as I went. I expected it to slide fairly easy, but I discovered it was stiff and it took some effort, probably because I was forcing the bristles to reverse in the bore. This is okay. You want to encounter some resistance when cleaning out the bore of a gun. Just to make sure it was going to be really clean, I repeated this process a couple more times.

With this done, it’s good idea to let the barrel sit for a few minutes so the solvent breaks down any more crud that’s left. I then moved on to the magazine tube. Taking a small screwdriver and slowly turning the magazine spring retainer proved to be a little more difficult. These are usually wedged fairly tightly in shotguns and I also had to make sure I didn’t have it pointing at my face when it came loose. The springs inside magazine tubes are under pressure and you don’t want this to hit you in the face if it comes flying out. With everything removed, I dipped the brush in the Brownells Shotgun Wad Solvent and ran it down the tube a couple of times. Again, I let this set for a while and I moved on to clean the inside of the receiver and the trigger assembly.

Using someCleaning Patches sized for a 20 gauge, I dipped a small part of a patch in the Wad Solvent and wiped all of the powder residue out. I also wiped down some other nooks and crannies on the barrel and choke tube I didn’t get cleaned. Remember, when you’re using these solvents make sure you don’t go overboard and slosh it all over the parts. A little goes a long way and you definitely don’t want to get any on the stock since it will take the finish right off.

Now for the trigger assembly. Taking the EZ Soak and shaking it well, I unscrewed the lid and simply dipped the entire unit in the jar. I let it soak for a few minutes and pulled it back out. I was amazed at how much dirt came off! It looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for a few years. Taking a nylon Super Toothbrush I lightly scrubbed entire assembly and then wiped off the excess fluid with a fresh cleaning patch. (According to Mike, unless you shoot every weekend you really only need to clean the trigger once or twice a year. This will cut down on cleaning time considerably!)

Since the barrel, magazine tube, and the receiver had been soaking for about fifteen minutes, it was time to get everything wiped down well and oiled. Taking the Dewey Rod and unscrewing the nylon bore brush, I screwed a patch loop onto the end and put a new cleaning patch through it. And ran that patch down the barrel, which came out mighty dirty. Since I was getting quite a bit of junk on the patch, I repeated six more patches through it, and they eventually came out clean, which is what you want. Taking a clean patch, I spraying it lightly with Brownells Rust Preventative Number 2, which comes in a handy pump spray bottle, I simply ran the oiled patch down the barrel. I repeated this two step process of cleaning out the solvent and then oiling with the magazine tube, and then carefully wiped down everything else that had solvent on it including the trigger mechanism to get the solvent and crud removed, then with an oiled patch for protection. Once you have everything clean and oiled, the last thing to do is wipe everything down until all the parts are fairly dry. Finally, reassemble the shotgun and you’re in business!

This ended up being a fairly simple project to take on and I was amazed at how good my shotgun looks, as well as how smooth it operates now. A few days after completing this job a group of us went out and shot some clays one gorgeous 65-degree afternoon. The shotgun performed really well after the cleaning, although I can’t say the same about my shooting abilities at clays. Anyway it’s a lot of fun. After cleaning a shotgun really well like this, keeping it clean is easy; just a little solvent, patches to clean it off, oiled patch for protection. Also, be sure to wipe all of the shotgun surfaces with a <a

If you do this after each shoot you’ll always be set for the next trip to the range or the fields.

Until the next time, if you have any questions about what products to use, or need a little help getting “Part A” back onto “Part B”, or you just want some good gunsmithing advice, don’t hesitate to call any one of the guys in our Tech Group; they’ll steer you in the right direction. If you’re headed out to hunt this year take a friend, take your kids, or find a co-worker who’s never hunted and introduce them to this great sport. Remember, have fun and be safe!

Now, I need to find a place to hunt……

About:
JP Fire Control System How To Video 1

The issue trigger and hammer used on Colt and other AR-15 type rifles and carbines leave a lot to be desired if you are a match rifle shooter or a varmint hunter. We even get calls from casual AR-15 plinkers complaining about the trigger pull. Remember, the AR-15 was designed as a battle rifle and to that end it has few peers. Almost every “factory” trigger is set up with a pull weight that will usually break somewhere between five to eight pounds, with significant amounts of creep and over-travel built in. That’s safe for the troops but not much fun to shoot.

The JP Trigger system employs adjustment screws located at the front and the rear of the sear/trigger that set both takeup and over-travel to the minimum. In addition, lighter-than-stock trigger and hammer springs are packed with the kit. The improved geometry used by JP along with these springs enable a lighter trigger pull to be easily obtained by anyone with the right tools and the time to follow the instructions.

Note: when doing any mechanical work or even when simply picking up any firearm, make absolutely certain that the chamber and magazine are empty and unloaded!

<div

Most AR-15 receivers are made from aluminum, allowing the hammer to fall against the receiver will damage it beyond repair.

Clamp the lower receiver in a padded bench vise or one with <a

Closely study the function of the hammer, trigger and disconnector until you are completely familiar with how they work and why. Cock the hammer by pushing it downward until it is captured by the sear. Pull the trigger and hold it rearward. Watch the hammer swing forward until it stops against the Hammer Drop Block (in actual function the hammer would strike the firing pin).

Keep the rearward pressure on the trigger and cock the hammer again. (You are now mimicking the function cycle of the bolt and carrier as they travel rearward after the shot is fired). As you push down on the hammer, notice how the hook, positioned halfway up the back of the hammer, engages the hook on the disconnector which is under upward pressure from the disconnector spring. Release the pressure on the trigger and the hammer. As the trigger is released, the hammer pivots forward until its cocking notch is caught by the sear surface on the front of the trigger. The functioning cycle is now complete and the rifle is ready to fire.
<div

In our well-used test rifle, the pull weight varied from 6.5 to 7.5 pounds before any trigger work had been done. Always check the pull weight a number of times to make certain the hammer is setting up properly on the sear surface. A small bit of dirt, powder fouling, or brass shavings in the wrong place can give a false reading when checking a trigger pull.

(Also useful is a FF-46 Fine India Stone #AR15 Safety Fitting Pad Area

On some lower receivers from various manufacturers, I have also had to relieve the front of the trigger hole in the bottom of the receivers. Relieving the front edge of this hole by approximately .125” with a medium cut, .250” diameter, parallel round file allows the J.P. trigger unit to insert easily into the receiver. If you do this carefully, you will not damage the exterior finish on the receiver and the modification will not show.

In our test rifle, the disconnector would not release the hammer when the trigger was pulled. I removed about .008″ from the front of the disconnector hook in accordance with JP’s instructions. I checked the trigger pull with the original hammer and J.P. springs installed, I recorded pull weights from 2 5¼8 pounds to 3 pounds over a series of fifteen tries. Remember, this was a well-used rifle that probably has over 5,000 rounds through the bore, plus an unknown number of dry-fire cycles. The original sear and hammer show quite a bit of wear!

Fitting the new J.P. Low Mass Hammer to the system gave a much cleaner, crisper feeling trigger pull, with pull weights from 23¼4 pounds to 3 pounds when cycled about twenty times. Before fitting the safety and trigger together, I replaced the upper receiver assembly, and dry fired the rifle about 30 times, using the bolt stop/release to jar the system by dropping the bolt with the trigger alternately held back to engage the disconnector and in the forward position to make sure the sear surface would catch the hammer.

If the hammer, sear and disconnect are functioning correctly, now you can fit the safety. Follow the safety-fitting instructions included with the kit. The safety on our rifle started to rotate but would not engage fully. I removed a slight amount of material from the safety fitting pad located on the top surface of the rear portion of the trigger (see photo above) with a Fine India Stone. I removed only a small amount of material at one time and tried the fit and safety function each time. Caution: You do not want to remove too much material from the safety fitting pad because this will ruin the part. So go slowly and try your fit each time. Only a small amount of material needed to be removed from the safety fitting pad on our trigger before the safety functioned correctly.

After fitting the safety, I disassembled the hammer and trigger from the lower, degreased the adjustment screws in the trigger, and used a drop of Loctite® #242, Blue Thread Locker on them. I then reassembled the trigger assembly into the receiver and re-adjusted the screws. Before the Loctite® set up, I re-checked the function of the parts both with the Hammer Drop Block and by dry firing as described earlier. Also check for proper safety function. The safety should rotate, engage and disengage easily and block all movement of the trigger. Again, check for the proper function of the hammer, trigger, sear and disconnector.

WARNING – If any of these parts fails to function properly as described in this article and in JP’s instructions, do not continue with the next step and do not function fire your rifle.

After allowing 24 hours for the Loctite® to set up, I repeated the safety check steps, then took a trip to the range for final testing.

The method I used was to first load a dummy round into the magazine, then a live round on top. After chambering the live round by feeding from the magazine, I fired the rifle. The extraction, ejection and feeding cycles of the fired empty case and dummy round worked “as advertised”.

I had no problems with the new trigger assembly. On each firing, the hammer was properly held by the disconnector and then the sear surface of the new JP trigger. This live/dummy exercise was repeated for five shots, then two live rounds and a dummy were loaded and fired, again with no problems.

After the test firing was done, I opened up the rifle and double checked that the Loctite® was properly holding the two adjustment screws. I gently attempted to turn them with the long-leg hex wrench that was supplied with the kit. Since there were no problems, the job was done except for cleaning!

I passed the rifle around to several of the Techs here in the office and they all found the J.P. Trigger to be vastly superior to the factory unit. Even if you use your AR-15 for casual plinking, you may want to consider this improvement because it’s just so much fun to shoot.

About:<br
