title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- Weatherby has moved Mark V rifle production to company headquarters in Paso Robles, Calif. Mark V rifles had been manufactured in Brainerd, Minn., since 1999.

“I am very proud that our Mark V rifles are once again being made here in California,” said company President Ed Weatherby.

“By going in-house, we can more easily oversee and control all aspects of craftsmanship, production, quality control and shipping. The Mark V has always been the heart and soul of the Weatherby brand. It’s only fitting that our first-born rifle has come home.”

Weatherby introduced the Mark V action in 1958. The first Mark V models were made in the company’s facility in South Gate, Calif. Over the years, Weatherby has built the Mark V action in factories from the U.S. to Germany to Japan.

“Today, many still refer to our Mark V action as the world’s strongest bolt action,” Weatherby remarked. “Hunters and shooters around the world continue to recognize Mark V rifles for their flat-shooting, hard-hitting and accurate performance.”

For more information, contact a local Weatherby dealer, call the company at (805) 227-2600 or visit www.weatherby.com.

Founded in 1945, Weatherby, Inc.’s line features the popular Vanguard and legendary Mark V rifles (production and custom), Threat Response shotguns and rifles, semi-auto and pump shotguns, premium ammunition and security/shooting accessories. The company is based in Paso Robles, Calif., and invites all hunters and shooters to visit and join its free online community at www.weatherbynation.com.
Tags: Merkel Arms

TRUSSVILLE, Ala. –(Ammoland.com)- Merkel has cast aside traditional workings of the bolt-action design that has reigned supreme for more than a century, and it has created a truly revolutionary design of bolt action that cycles in half the length of the conventional system.

This new Merkel rifle is the linear-bolt-action Merkel RX Helix, and it stands as the fastest operating centerfire bolt action in the world.

The modern repeating bolt-action rifle hasn’t changed much since the introduction of the Model 98 back in 1898 by famed gunmaker Paul Mauser. One afternoon in hunting camp, 112 years after Mauser created his bolt-action design, a pair of Merkel engineers decided it was time to create the next generation of bolt-action rifle. After a lengthy collaboration, the pair came up with a design for the rifle that would ultimately become the revolutionary RX Helix—a design that is nothing short of genius.

Amazingly, while the RX Helix is a straight-pull rifle, it retains the strength and safety of a rotary bolt head with seven locking lugs, as well as a fully enclosed, hard-anodized-aluminum action housing. The RX Helix’s linear motion of the bolt handle is transmitted to the bolt head at a ratio of one-to-two by way of a revolutionary transmission gearing system, providing for smooth and fast cycling without the rotational or tipping movement found on other straight-pull bolt-action rifles.

The Merkel linear-bolt-action system cycles exceptionally fast, which allows more time for aiming and accurate follow-up shots. Since the RX Helix employs a closed action, the bolt body doesn’t travel outside that action, therefore the shooter can maintain cheekweld with an eye on the target as he cycles the bolt. The RX Helix’s bolt handle is also exceptionally easy to manipulate for left-handed shooters, as they can maintain cheekweld while using the support hand to cycle the action.

The RX Helix features a manual cocking lever on the tang and a direct trigger system. The rifles patented linkage-driven-hammer system provides maximum ignition energy for flawless operation and added confidence when hunting dangerous game.

A true takedown rifle for exceptionally easy packing, the RX Helix can be dismantled almost effortlessly in a matter of seconds without tools for cleaning or transportation. The RX Helix has a universal action length that covers calibers from .222 Rem. to .300 Win. Mag., and changing calibers takes less than a minute with the appropriate barrel, bolt and magazine. Weaver rails are integrated into the action, and fast-acquisition iron sights with three-dot rear and one-dot front fiber-optic inserts are standard.

The RX Helix is available in a standard black configuration as well as four levels of design—Arabesque, Wild Boar, Spirit and Deluxe. An all-carbon-fiber version is also available either with or without a carbon-wrapped barrel. The RX Helix is available in a wide range of popular calibers including .222 Rem., .223 Rem., .243 Win., 6.5×55 SE, .270 Win., 7×64, .308 Win., .30-’06 Sprg., 8×57 IS, 9.3×62, 7mm Rem. Mag. and .300 Win. Mag. Barrel lengths vary according to caliber, and additional barrels, bolts and magazines are available for caliber changes. The MSRP for the standard black rifle with Grade 2 wood is $3,795.

For more information, contact Steyr Arms at 7661 Commerce Lane, Trussville, AL 35173; call (205) 655-8299; or visit www.steyrarms.com.

Merkel Rifle Specifications

Model: RX Helix

Purpose: Hunting & target shooting

Manufacturer: Merkel Jagd und Sportwaffen, GmbH

Operation: Linear-bolt-action repeating rifle

Caliber: Mini: .222 Rem., .223 Rem.; Standard: 6.5X55 Swe., .270 Win.,
Remington Arms Company

Madison, NC --(Ammoland.com)- In 1962, Remington Arms Company, LLC., (“Remington”) introduced a bolt- action rifle that had an immediate and major impact on the shooting world. Advertised as, “the world’s strongest bolt-action,” the Model 700 ultimately earned its reputation for delivering out-of- the-box accuracy and rock-solid dependability.

With more than 5 million units sold, the Model 700 family of rifles is the most diverse centerfire rifle line available today. There are stainless, rich-blued and matte-finished versions to choose from with a variety of stock options that includes camo, synthetic, walnut and laminate – all offered in a range of calibers unrivaled in the industry.

But there’s only one Model 700 BDL 50th Anniversary rifle, and Remington is proud to announce this limited-edition rifle designed specifically to celebrate a milestone in the history of the legendary Model 700.

The 50th Anniversary rifle design is based on the original 1962 Model 700 BDL, a designation that was originally an acronym for B-Deluxe Grade. The classic look continues with a satin- finished “B” grade American walnut stock with right-handed cheek piece. Enhancing the classic look of the stock are cut fleur-de-lis-style checkering and period-style, white-line spacers on the black fore-end and pistol-grip caps, as well as a black-vented recoil pad.

The durable 24-inch carbon steel, magnum-contoured, rifle-sighted barrel features satin-blued finish for a striking appearance. Other standard features include a drilled and tapped receiver for scope mounting; four-round magazine capacity; sling swivel studs; and our patented, accuracy-enhancing, X-Mark Pro adjustable trigger set at 3 ½ pounds. Further identifying the limited edition Model 700 BDL 50th Anniversary rifle for collectors and enthusiasts is a commemorative logo laser- engraved on the magazine floor plate.

The Model 700 50th Anniversary rifle is chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum. The cartridge was introduced in 1962 along with the Model 700. Since 1962, hunters have admired the 7mm Remington Magnum as an excellent long-range, flat-shooting, big-game cartridge. This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the pairing of rifle and caliber.

The Model 700 BDL 50th Anniversary rifle is available at a suggested retail price of $1399.

For additional information on the Model 700 family of rifles and other Remington products, please visit our web site at www.remington.com .

Ammoland.com)- Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR) is proud to present the Ruger American Rifle, an all new, 100% American made bolt-action rifle that sets a new standard of excellence among value-priced, bolt-action rifles.

Offered in short- and long-action calibers, the Ruger American Rifle combines the rugged reliability of Ruger’s past with the award-winning ingenuity featured in so many of Ruger’s new products.

“The Ruger American Rifle delivers exciting features and outstanding accuracy at a very reasonable price,” remarked Ruger President and CEO Mike Fifer. “Our new rifle is lightweight and quick handling, yet manages recoil surprisingly well. With a great trigger, smooth-cycling bolt, and tack-driving accuracy, the Ruger American Rifle gives hunters an affordable tool to achieve success in the field,” he concluded.

The 6-1/4 pound Ruger American Rifle offers no-compromise engineering innovation, proving that a world class rifle need not come with a high price tag. The new Ruger Marksman Adjustable trigger offers a crisp release with a pull weight that is user-adjustable between three and five pounds. Ruger’s new patent-pending Power Bedding™ system utilizes stainless-steel bedding blocks insert-molded into the stock to positively locate the receiver and free-float the barrel. The barrel’s rifling is cold hammer forged to exacting tolerances, providing sub-MOA accuracy, long-term endurance, and a mirror-smooth finish that is easy to clean.

The Ruger American Rifle’s three-lug, 70 degree bolt provides ample scope clearance, and utilizes a full diameter bolt body and dual cocking cams for smooth, easy cycling from the shoulder. The reliable 4-round, rotary magazine fits flush with the stock and offers the smooth feed that has become the hallmark of Ruger rotary magazines. The receiver is drilled and tapped for mounting the included scope bases.

Big Horn Armory

Cody, WY --(Ammoland.com)- Obadiah was a field mouse living on his land out in the country in Wyoming.

Because of his hard work, he was a successful farmer and business mouse.

However, Obadiah was completely surrounded by large cats. Some of these cats had land with mineral rights that, if worked correctly, could bring great wealth and a contented way of life for the cat community.

The problem with the cats was that, even with all the land and potential wealth, they fixated their time and hostile efforts on the tiny patch of extremely productive land that Obadiah owned. In the name of their cat- God, they declared a holy cat war on Obadiah, his family and his fellow mice who lived on this land.

Obadiah from the Bible was a successful man who was a servant of God and used his own wealth to hide and protect the persecuted. The Wyoming Obadiah was also a protector of his fellow mice.

The cats came on multiple occasions to strike at Obadiah, many times in herds of cats. I am sure you can recall the expression “like trying to herd cats,” implying that, just as you cannot make a group of cats move in the same direction, at the same time, to accomplish a common goal, you cannot make some people move to accomplish a task. Trying to get a group of cats to strike at a common target and function in a coordinated effort is extremely rare.

What cats will do is wait until one cat has wounded its prey, and then the un-herd will move in as a collective body to share in the spoils.

Wyoming Obadiah, knowing the ways of cats and that he had a duty to protect his land and his fellow mice, decided he must out-gun the cats. He acquired a Wyoming made Big Horn Armory Model 89 lever action rifle in 500 S&W magnum. The cats were sorely afraid of the Model 89. They did not have such a weapon. They knew the Model 89 was capable of massive destruction of cats, should they attempt to attack Obadiah.

So they did what cats and children do when they do not get their way-they whined and complained to whomever would listen. “We do not have a Model 89 and no one will give us one.” “It is not fair.” “There needs to be a worldwide committee set up to look into Obadiah and his Model 89.” “There needs to be restrictions placed on Obadiah, his land and his Model 89.”

After all, what happens if the next time a cat or un-herd of cats tries attacking Obadiah, and he is so concerned he cannot repel the cats by conventional means, he brings out the big gun-the Model 89? Why won’t someone give us cats a Model 89? It is not fair-it is not fair. Do you think if we stood in the streets just outside of Obadiah’s land and threw stones & rocks and called to our cat-God to destroy Obadiah, that someone would give us a Model 89?

The cats were sorely afraid of the Big Horn Armory Model 89 Lever-Action Carbine.

The Model 89 is so powerful that if Obadiah fires it at one cat, the collateral damage down range may include many other cats. That is not fair-that is not fair. Obadiah continues to try to live in peace, even as he is circled daily by ever larger and more vicious cat-God inspired felines who wish to attack and be martyred into cat heaven.

Obadiah is a God fearing mouse and does not want the blood of many cats on his hands. He knows how the Model 89 works and what it will do to the cats, but he has never fired the “89.” He truly fears the day will come when he must make that deadly decision.

Obadiah knows he can fire the “89” many times and smite his enemies, but if he fails to defend even once, the cat un-herds will rush in and feed on the bodies of his fellow mice. If this happens, Obadiah’s lands will fall-perhaps-forever into the paws of the cats. Cats, who, after feasting on the dead, will allow the land to go feral and barren. The cats will also be free to prey on mice living outside of Obadiah’s former land and protection.

Make no mistake-Obadiah will use his Model 89, firing a Mt. Baldy Bullet, 50 caliber, 450 grain cat annihilating, Keith bullet, specially lubricated with beeswax and lard. He will do this before he allows the destruction of his own kind and his land, driving a spike into the heart of evil.

Cats have no idea what is truly fair or unfair, but they must learn–hopefully not from the mouth of a Model 89.

Major Van Harl USAF Ret
Ammoland.com)- The hunting world has long looked down their nose at “black” military-style rifles.

Thanks to cutting edge innovation from firearm and cartridge manufacturers, the M-16 style AR-15 platform has become an excellent choice for hunters who like me; enjoy sport shooting and military arms as well.

In anticipation of a spring hog hunt in Texas, I started to build an AR-15 style rifle chambered in the potent 6.8mm Special Purpose Cartridge (SPC).

While I’m no gunsmith, the modular nature of the AR platform makes it easy for average Joes like me to build and customize their rifles.

On a Stag Arms AR-15 lower, I added a Stag Arms 6.8mm upper with an M4 profile 16” barrel, complete with a Magpul UBR (Universal Battle Rifle) stock and VLTOR CASV-EL free floating rail system.

After much deliberation I finally settled on a Nikon Monarch 2-14X scope with Nikon’s excellent bullet drop compensator (BDC) reticule, which I zeroed at 100 yards.

NAGR's Luke O’Dell - Success 6.8 SPC AR15 Rifle for Hog Hunting

I’d done a lot of research in advance of building my “hog slayer” rifle, and decided that the intermediate power of the 6.8mm SPC had exactly the right kind of terminal ballistics for hog or deer hunting and self-defense. I chose to use Hornady’s polymertipped 110grn V-Max bullet as my hunting load.

After several days of unsuccessful hunting I was wondering if I was ever going to try out my new rifle and test Hornady’s ammunition in a real life situation.

Finally on the evening of the last day of hunting, a 185lbs boar walked out into my field and started eating corn not 60 yards from my tree stand.

It took me a few moments to quell the initial rush of “buck fever” that sent my heart racing before I took aim and fired a text book shoulder shot. My boar ran 20 yards into the twilight of the Texas brush and dropped dead.

The 6.8mm bullet penetrated the hog’s shield of cartilage perfectly and left little of his heart and lung intact. Thanks to my 6.8mm AR-15 I have a freezer full of wild boar sausage and a new multi-purpose rifle in my gun safe.

About:
U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance

Illinois --(AmmoLand.com)-A so called “assault weapon” bill in Illinois will ban numerous commonly used hunting firearms.

Senate Bill 3036, introduced by Senator Antonio Munoz (D- Chicago), prohibits the manufacture, delivery, sale, purchase, or possession of “semi-automatic assault weapons.” Included in the bill’s definition are firearms used for hunting such as semi-automatic shotguns that have either a pistol grip or a thumbhole stock and many hunting rifles.

While the bill allows for possession of those firearms that are currently owned, it would prohibit the purchase or transfer of new firearms that are on the banned list in Illinois, even if those firearms are commonly used for target shooting or for hunting purposes.

The measure does include an exemption for the possession of these types of firearms when used for hunting, but fails to allow for target or other recreational shooting activities including sighting in. Essentially, sportsmen could only use certain firearms for hunting if they already possess them or purchased them out of state.

“The bill’s broad definition outlaws numerous firearms used commonly for both deer and turkey hunting and other shoot sports,” says Jeremy Rine, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance associate director of state services. “There is simply no justification for this bill.”

Take Action! Illinois sportsmen should contact their senators and tell them that the firearms included in SB 3036 are commonly used by scores of citizens for target shooting, hunting and other recreational activities and should not be banned. class="wp-caption-text">Blaser USA

San Antonio, TX - -(AmmoLand.com)- “The beginning of a new era of perfection”, is how Blaser CEO Bernhard Knoebel has named the launch of the new Blaser bolt action rifle R8 in his preface of the brand-new catalog.

For the past five years, there has been one lingering question for the hunters and engineers at Blaser, regarding the Blaser bolt action rifle R93: How can this technically superior concept be taken to the next level? In order to answer this question the Blaser engineers, most of them passionate hunters themselves, kept a close connection to hunters around the world in order to respond to their requests.

When the development of the R8 actually started the detachable magazine was right at the top of the optimization list. Blaser found an ergonomically superior solution that essentially supports fast and intuitive handling. Magazine and trigger unit merged into one compact module. The magazine buttons are positioned right above the trigger guard. Thus, the magazine can be released blindly and within a split second. When removing the magazine, the R8 automatically de-cocks and once the magazine is removed, the cocking slide cannot engage anymore. Today, this is a very important safety feature securing the rifle against misuse by unauthorized persons.

The detachable magazine is just one of a multitude of innovations that turn the R8 into the new worldwide benchmark when it comes to bolt action rifles. Enhancing the reliable and precise performance of the trigger posed a very special engineering challenge that has been brilliantly mastered. The new Blaser Precision Trigger breaks crisp as glass at a trigger pull of 750 gram / 1 5/8 lbs. Thanks to its extremely short release time it turns the shooter’s thought impulse immediately into an accurate shot. The innovative design does not rely on a spring to reset the trigger after firing, which marks the next leap in rifle technology. The desmodromic trigger mechanism offers unsurpassed reliability in extreme conditions such as freezing rain and blowing dust.

In order to make shooting with the R8 as comfortable and safe as possible, Blaser attached immense importance to optimizing the stock, reaching a new level of perfection here, too. Different from traditional stock shapes the straight comb of the R8 diverts recoil forces horizontally on the shoulder. This results in increased muzzle stability and a substantial reduction of felt recoil. Thanks to a steeper angle, the palm support and a distinct cast, the R8 pistol grip provides a relaxed hand position allowing for controlled shooting and better shooting results.

Besides achieving maximum performance, Blaser gave particular attention to superior style and design. Concave and convex lines discreetly shape the rifles appearance. Contours of stock, action, mount and bolt handle blend perfectly, giving the R8 a dynamic and unequaled elegance.

The R8 is available in the following models at your qualified Blaser dealer from February 2010: Professional, Jaeger, Luxus, Attaché and Baronesse as well as in the model versions Safari PH and Safari Luxus. Also available in the R8 Custom class is an individually engraved version. Visit: www.blaser-usa.com
Tags: <a

They are today’s modern sporting rifle.

The AR in “AR-15″ rifle stands for Armalite rifle, after the company that developed it in the 1950s. “AR” does NOT stand for “assault rifle” or “automatic rifle.”

AR-15-style rifles are NOT “assault weapons” or “assault rifles.” An assault rifle is fully automatic — a machine gun. Automatic firearms have been severely restricted from civilian ownership since 1934.

If someone calls an AR-15-style rifle an “assault weapon,” he or she either supports banning these firearms or does not understand their function and sporting use, or both. Please correct them. “Assault weapon” is a political term created by California anti-gun legislators to ban some semi-automatic rifles there in the 1980s.

AR-15-style rifles look like military rifles, such as the M-16, but function like other semi-automatic civilian sporting firearms, firing only one round with each pull of the trigger.

Versions of modern sporting rifles are legal to own in all 50 states, provided the purchaser passes the mandatory FBI background check required for all retail firearm purchasers.

Since the 19th century, civilian sporting rifles have evolved from their military predecessors. The modern sporting rifle simply follows that tradition.

These rifles’ accuracy, reliability, ruggedness and versatility serve target shooters and hunters well. They are true all-weather firearms.

Chamberings include .22, .223 (5.56 x 45mm), 6.8 SPC, .308, .450 Bushmaster and about a dozen others. Upper receivers for pistol calibers such as 9 mm, .40, and .45 are available. There are even .410 shotgun versions.

These rifles are used for many different types of hunting, from varmint to big game. And they’re used for target shooting in the national matches.

AR-15-style rifles are no more powerful than other hunting rifles of the same caliber and in most cases are chambered in calibers less powerful than common big-game hunting cartridges like the 30-06 Springfield and .300 Win. Mag.

The AR-15 platform is modular. Owners like being able to affix different “uppers” (the barrel and chamber) to the “lower” (the grip, stock).

And, they are a lot of fun to shoot!

About NSSF
National Shooting Sports Foundation

NEWTOWN, Conn. –-(AmmoLand.com)- The National Shooting Sports Foundation has launched a national media campaign designed to correct widespread misperceptions among gun owners and non-gun owners about AR-15-style rifles, also known as modern sporting rifles.

The media campaign illustrates how for more than 100 years rifles used by the military that possess battlefield requirements of accuracy, ruggedness and reliability became, understandably, popular civilian sporting rifles.

The multi-pronged campaign will use print, video and Web-based components to reach as wide an audience as possible, with emphasis placed on educating sportsmen whose preference for traditional-looking firearms can lead them to misunderstand AR-15-platform rifles and to even describe them using terms such as “assault weapon,” which inadvertently lends support to those wanting to ban these rifles.

“The best-selling rifles in America today are those based on the AR-15 platform — they are today’s modern sporting rifles — yet they remain America’s most misunderstood firearm because of confusion caused by their cosmetic features,” said Steve Sanetti, NSSF President.

“We want people to understand that these civilian sporting rifles function just like many other sporting rifles, as semi-automatics, firing only one round with each pull of the trigger, and are widely used by hunters and target shooters and for home protection.”

Learn more and view NSSF’s 60-second TV ad at NSSF.org/MSR.

About NSSF
Frank B - Brownells.com

Brownells.com - -(AmmoLand.com)-We’ve been doing some “reality checks” around here last week, trying to get a handle on how our industry is doing and how we need to prepare for the upcoming year.

As we look back, it would seem that most all of us in the industry have had a fantastic run of business. Our industry has been recognized by shooters, non-shooters and even the economic whiz-kids on Wall Street, as one of the very few bright spots during this economic downturn.

You probably saw it in the huge volume of sales starting right at the election in November, 2008, peaking somewhere around Easter, 2009 and then sliding back closer to the traditional summer slow-down we always see.

In doing our analysis here, we asked ourselves the following three questions and tried to come up with answers. You might want to stop a moment and with a fresh cup of coffee, ask yourself these questions about your business and how you feel about your future.

Is this “Obama Gun Sale Bubble” over?

Is demand for firearms and ammunition coming down to the standard demand curve for our business?

What can we do for the remainder of 2009 and all of 2010 to match or beat those high sales in the “Bubble” months of 2008-09?

We came up with some answers, which I’ll pass along to you, but they really are only our opinions from our viewpoint. Hopefully you will find something in here which will be beneficial to you in your business.

We believe the insane demand level for tactical firearms is over and future demands for these products will come back down to the industry norms. Keep in mind, though, there have been a huge number of non-traditional firearms buyers making purchases of AR-15′s. So there are a lot of customers out there who will still want to accessorize and modify one of the world’s most versatile and popular platforms. Definitely still a market for AR-15 “stuff”, but a much softer one for the basic platform itself.

The conceal carry/home defense market, however, is starting to heat up and right now is the beginning of a “short boom”, not as significant as tactical rifles, but one nonetheless. We don’t know how much leg this market can get under it or how long it might run. It is getting lots of play right now in the gun press, so take a look at how you can get into it modestly and watch it closely.

We strongly believe the reloading and ammo markets are still underserved and have strong growth ahead of them. It will take longer to get these markets back to a norm because the primer shortage. The deep fluctuations/price increases in the metals markets from which most of these ammo components are made – lead, copper, brass has an impact on availability and prices. Our industry’s share of these markets is not even a wrinkle, and we have neither control nor any leverage we can bring into play. We just have to wait for the metals markets to settle out.

Shotgun and hunting markets did not seem to have the favorable run-up as the tactical weapons market. From what we think we see, there might be some returning strength. It looks like reservations for hunts have still to recover. We definitely expect those to slowly come back, but quite possibly not until folks are more comfortable the economy has settled down and a general recovery is underway. Hunts are discretionary, more easily put off.

For net results for 2009, don’t focus too much on beating year-over-year numbers. Our last year was way out of the norm. Instead focus on the year’s sales number. With the history we’ve had, it would actually be acceptable to have a 0% growth year in 2010 – it all depends when your fiscal year ends and where the “Obama Bubble” fell. Sometimes it’s just nice to have survived and to be able to move on!
<div

The US Army did a study and found that the ricochet from a shotgun slug is more dangerous than the ricochet from a 150 grain .30-06 bullet!

The “safe” slug myth: shotgun slugs are required in some areas, but why?

The “safe” slug myth: shotgun slugs are required in some areas, but why? Guns Magazine, Nov, 2007 by Holt Bodinson

The shotgun slug is less safe and more dangerous in the field than a 150 grain .30-06 bullet or a 50-caliber muzzleloading projectile. Does that statement sound improbable? Conventional wisdom would say so. I’ve just finished digesting a 67-page technical report commissioned by the Pennsylvania Legislative Budget and Finance Committee that blows a hole in conventional wisdom and the increasing establishment of shotgun-slug-only zones by state’s game agencies.

What prompted the study? A lawsuit involving a hunting accident in which a woman sitting in a car was struck by a stray rifle bullet coupled with increasing sportsmen’s opposition to the expansion of shotgun slug and muzzleloading-only zones on the decision of the Pennsylvania Game Commission….

Virginia Shooting Sports Association

Suffolk, VA --(AmmoLand.com)- On September 2, 2009, the Suffolk City Council will meet. On the agenda is discussion of new regulations related to discharge of a rifle.

Prior to this year, the use of rifles was prohibited in the western portion of the city, but allowed under certain circumstances in the eastern portion of the city.

According to the Suffolk News-Hearld, the two halves are separated by the “Dismal Swamp line,” which starts at the intersection of Desert Road and the state line and goes northbound on Desert Road, through downtown and along Route 10 to the Isle of Wight County line.

Hunting with rifles east of the swamp line is allowed during hunting season as long as the hunter is on a stand at least 15 feet above the ground. It is not, however, allowed anywhere in the city within 100 yards of any structure used as a residence, business or storage facility without the permission of the owner; within 100 yards of any public street, except at a permitted firing range; or in a densely populated area.

Early this year, Suffolk petitioned the game department to allow the city to make its own regulations regarding rifles. The department agreed, but did not take up the issue of the exception east of the swamp line.

The city could have more in-depth talks with the department on that issue next year, but it has been recommended that the council enact an ordinance similar to last year’s before hunting season starts. A youth deer-hunting day is scheduled for Sept. 26, and hunting season starts soon after, so council should put new regulations in place before then.

The Council is seeking the input of residents, farmers, hunt clubs and other interested people before creating the more comprehensive ordinance.

If you live and/or hunt in Suffolk, it is recommended that you attend this important meeting and make your voice heard.

When: Wednesday, September 2, 7:00PM
Thompson Center

ROCHESTER, N.H. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Thompson/Center Arms Company Inc., a Smith & Wesson company, announced that it has begun shipping the new ICON® Precision Hunter bolt-action rifles. Utilizing Thompson/Center Arms’ “Foundation for Accuracy,” the ICON Precision Hunter features the innovative Interlock™ bedding system along with a match-grade barrel with 5R rifling. This combination of features provides the level of consistency, reliability, functionality and accuracy needed for long-range hunting applications.

“Thompson/Center has continued to push the definition of accuracy in a production rifle with the new ICON Precision Hunter, which is certified to deliver sub-Minute of Angle (MOA) accuracy right out of the box,” said Tom Kelly, Vice President of Marketing for Smith & Wesson. “We have listened to the bench shooters and varmint hunters, heard their ideas on what a perfect gun for their style of hunting would be and have designed the ICON Precision Hunter to exceed their expectations.”

The new ICON Precision Hunter rifle embodies all the aspects of a long-range hunting rifle, from its solid machined receiver to its heavy 22-inch fluted barrel with target crown. Each rifle comes standard with a laminated hardwood stock with cheek piece and beavertail forend. class="wp-caption-text">Browning Firearms

Morgan, Utah - -(AmmoLand.com)- Browning has added twelve new offerings to their T-Bolt rimfire rifle line that are sure to please left-hand shooters. All the new models incorporate the basic design of the T-Bolt rifle but with the bolt on the left side to accommodate those who shoot left handed.

Initially introduced in 1965 and discontinued in 1975, the T-Bolt was once again reintroduced in 2006 in right-hand models only. With improvements to the design including materials and manufacturing methods, now lefties can own the smoothest little system on the market. The new T-Bolt is more accurate, reliable, lighter and smoother operating than ever.

The T-Bolts straight-pull bolt cycles fast and locks up solid in the receiver that is machined from steel barstock. Receivers are drilled and tapped for scope mounts. Barrels are free floated and have semi-match chambers and recessed crowns. The three lever trigger design combined with a short travel firing gives a crisp break, quick lock time, and no travel take up. The trigger pull weight is adjustable with an external screw. A top tang safety is thumb operated without changing from a shooting grip.

There are four new left-hand models in each caliber; .22 long rifle, .22 Winchester Magnum and .17 HMR.:

The Sporter Model comes with a satin finish checkered walnut stock and blued receiver and medium sporter barrel. Suggested retail price is $689.00 for the .22 long rifle model and $719.00 for the .22 Win Magnum and .17 HMR guns.

SISK Rifles

Dayton, Texas - -(ShootingWire.com)- After years of building custom hunting rifles and answering customers’ questions, noted custom rifle builder Charlie Sisk recognized the need for an in-depth source of information about custom rifles. He began to write notes on every aspect of custom hunting rifles with hopes that he could better prepare those interested in purchasing a custom rifle. From those notes, Sisk put together an outline for a book he hopes will answer the overlying question: What do I need to know before buying a custom hunting rifle? This forthcoming book Selecting and Ordering a Custom Hunting Rifle hopes to educate gun and hunting enthusiasts interested in what it takes to make a custom hunting rifle.

To round out this book, Sisk invited several top gun and hunting writers to elaborate on their hunting experiences and the rifle components within their realm of expertise. Chapters are dedicated to every critical component of a fine hunting rifle. Sisk’s years of experience building custom hunting rifles and dealing with people, combined with the input from experts that have used his and other custom rifles all over the world, will allow this book to unlock the mystery surrounding the selection of a gun-maker and the components involved in building a custom hunting rifle.

The book is scheduled for release summer of 2009 and will be the perfect addition to the library of anyone looking to order their first or fortieth custom hunting rifle.

Visit <a
