Ohio Department Natural Resources

COLUMBUS, OH --(Ammoland.com)- Overlooked wildlife will be the focus of the 2012 Ohio Wildlife Diversity Conference, which is scheduled for Wednesday, March 7, at the Aladdin Shrine Center in Columbus.

The conference, titled “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” is sponsored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife and is open to the public.

“We hope many people are able to attend this conference to learn more about the interesting wildlife we have in Ohio,” said Director Jim Zehringer, director of ODNR.

The Wildlife Diversity Conference has steadily grown in popularity. The first conference, held in 1985, drew 40 people. Last year, 975 people attended the day-long gathering.

The keynote speaker this year, Cindy Hale of the University of Minnesota, will discuss earthworms and their impact to the environment in her presentation, “Dances with Worms: The Great Lakes Worm Watch.”

Other conference topics include discussions of freshwater mussel restoration, aquatic invasive species, a Lake Erie pelagic bird survey, terrestrial crayfish, wildlife orphans, wetland restoration, as well as beavers, porcupines and fishers in Ohio.

The third Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp, which features the spotted salamander, will be available to conference attendees.

Proceeds from the sale of the stamp will be used to support:

• endangered and threatened native species;
• habitat restoration, land purchases and conservation easements; and
• educational products for students and wildlife enthusiasts.

Aaron Tippin, a singer known for his songs about hard work and patriotism, will be performing the closing act of the EPIC Outdoor Game Fair from 6 to 7:15 pm on Sunday, September 25. Tippin rocked the country music world in 1990 with his song “You’ve Got To Stand For Something” and continued releasing hits such as “Working Man’s Ph.D.” and “That’s As Close As I’ll Get To Loving You.” After the tragic events of 9/11/01, Tippin wrote the emotional anthem “Where The Stars And Stripes And The Eagle Fly.” Besides being a singer-songwriter, pilot, farmer, winemaker and competitive bodybuilder – Tippin is an avid outdoorsman. He recently joined former Arkansas governor, Mike Huckabee, on a turkey hunt in Texas.

Rising country music stars, Crossin Dixon, will play the opening night of the EPIC Outdoor Game Fair from 6 to 7:15 pm on September 23. Comprised of equal parts Southern rock and contemporary country, Crossin Dixon rose to Nashville’s attention in the mid-2000s on the strength of their live act. The band is made up of four Mississippi natives – vocalist Jason Miller, drummer Michael Bole, and guitarists/vocalists Brandon Hyde and Charlie Grantham. Crossin Dixon songs include “Guitar Slinger,” “Make You Mine,” “I Love My Old Bird Dog (& I Love You)” and “Goodbye to Henry.”

Atlanta’s hometown artist, Mike Brookshire, will be performing from 2:30 to 3:40 pm on Friday, September 23. Born in Atlanta, Mike learned to play on an old flat-top put together by his father from pieces salvaged from several old guitars. In 2007, Mike was inducted into the “Hall of Fame” by the Atlanta Country Music Hall Of Fame, the “Visionary Award” by the Georgia Music Industry Music Association, and awarded “Song Writer of The Year” by The Atlanta Society of Entertainers. He currently tours and plays solo dates around the south with his band, and has a great album out, “A Lot Of Explainin’ To Do.” Between gigs and sessions, he also finds time to play at some of the industry’s biggest events and galas, such as his yearly appearance on stage with such artists as Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum, Sugarland, Montgomery Gentry, Brooks and Dunn, Reba McEntire and many more at the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Moonshine Mafia, a 4-piece band based out of Payson, Arizona will appear on the Entertainment Stage on Saturday and Sunday. They perform anything from classic country to current country as well as favorite classic rock songs from The Eagles and Pink Floyd.

Wisconsin DNR

MADISON, WI --(Ammoland.com)- Hunter Education Instructors are needed to mentor fourth and fifth grade students while shooting BB guns at the Wisconsin Outdoor Education Expo on Thurs. May 19 and Fri. May 20, 2011.

The “Youth Expo” is held at the Dodge County Fairgrounds, three miles east of Beaver Dam on Hwy 33.

Five Expos held since 2006 have attracted more than 21,000 students, teachers and chaperones. The Expo is arranged by “camps,” including: archery, wildlife and conservation heritage enrichment, team building, firearm safety, fishing, camping, birds of prey, bird and animal calling, sporting dog demonstrations and trail recreation. All of this at no cost to the schools or groups attending.

Students arriving at the DNR firearm safety camp attend brief instruction on TAB-K presented by RSWs and then proceed to shoot BB guns at paper targets. Each student is mentored, one-on-one, by a Hunter Ed. Instr. or a Conservation Warden. This is where YOU can help. Plans are being made to have two 24 target ranges operating; which means over 50 instructors and/or wardens are needed each day.

EDGEFIELD, S.C. --(Ammoland.com)- The future of hunting, shooting, fishing and other outdoor traditions rests on the shoulders of an important group of people: today’s youth.

To honor North America’s young people and remind adults about the importance of teaching children about the outdoors, the National Wild Turkey Federation has dedicated an entire weekend to promote North America’s hunting heritage. The theme of the 35th annual NWTF National Convention and Sport Show is “Our Youth. Our Legacy.”

“Since part of our mission is preserving our hunting heritage, we always try to creatively involve youth and their families at the NWTF national convention,” said NWTF CEO George Thornton. “It’s important for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to remember that we have a responsibility to pass on our outdoor traditions. Our convention theme will serve as a reminder.”

The convention, which will take place Feb. 18 to Feb. 20 in Nashville at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, is one of the largest gatherings of hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts in North America. More than 40,000 people, including many families, are expected to attend. The three-day event, sponsored by MidwayUSA, features a giant sport show that is larger than four football fields and loaded with the latest hunting and outdoor gear.

Families who attend will find no shortage of activities for people of all ages, starting with “The Roost,” the center for families in the sport show exhibit hall. Youth can try archery, air guns, casting and fishing, and even watch presentations with live animals. By completing a variety of conservation education activities, each child can earn a collectible patch. Smokey Bear and Jake, the NWTF’s mascot, will be available for photos and high-fives.

CULLEN, Va. --(Ammoland.com)- Jimmy Carwile, owner and auctioneer of Carwile Auctions, Inc., has been tapped to conduct an auction at the 35th annual Convention and Sport Show of the National Wild Turkey Federation, slated for Feb. 17-20 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville. Mr. Carwile will conduct the Ladies’ Luncheon & Auction on Sat., Feb. 19.

“I am honored to have been selected to participate in an event of this size and scope,” Mr. Carwile remarked.

“The NWTF attracts between 40,000 and 50,000 people a year to its annual convention and sport show. To say I am both humbled and excited would be an understatement. I’ve been involved with the NWTF at the regional level for years, but never something like this.”

About five years ago, Mr. Carwile began conducting auctions for the High Bridge Strutters, a Virginia chapter of the NWTF.

“He’s never charged a penny and he always does a fantastic job,” said Andy Ellington, president of the chapter. “Our regional director came to last year’s auction and saw Jimmy in action. That led to an invitation to call an auction in Nashville.”

At the High Bridge Strutters auction last year, Mr. Carwile called the action from a scissor-jack, suspended high above the crowd.

“That allowed him to connect better with the people,” Mr. Ellington said, “and it really worked. We saw an increase of 30 percent over the previous year’s sale. Jimmy is just great. We named him an honorary member of our chapter.”

The Ladies’ Luncheon & Auction on Saturday will feature some wonderful items up for bid. These will include an African hunting safari, hunting and fishing packages, golf trips, a Country Music Awards festival package, fine wine, apparel gift certificates and more. The auction will take place in the Presidential Ballroom, starting at 1 p.m. Lunch will be at 12:30.

Another auction, which Mr. Carwile will not be conducting, will be held on Friday evening, Feb. 18. It will be part of a Grand Auction & Beach Party, featuring beach-themed music by the Swingin’ Medallions. Items to be auctioned include a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado 4WD truck, a New Holland tractor and a white-tail deer archery hunt in Illinois worth $9,000. The National Wild Turkey Federation was founded in 1973 and is dedicated to the conservation of the wild turkey and the preservation of the country’s hunting heritage. The NWTF and its members have helped restore wild turkey populations across the U.S., spending more than $331 million to conserve over 15.9 million acres of habitat for all types of wildlife.

This year’s National Convention and Sport Show is already completely sold out, with all 625 booth spaces taken, making it an already record-setting event. Last year’s convention drew more than 44,000 attendees, and the NWTF is expecting another strong turnout next month. It will be the first major convention at Oryland in Nashville since the devastating flood in May.

Legendary performers Trace Adkins, The Band Perry and other entertainers will perform during the nightly events. Friday’s itinerary will feature a Western-themed Hunt Luncheon & Auction, starting at 11 a.m. (CST). Saturday’s centerpiece events will be the Grand Auction & Beach Party and the Ladies’ Luncheon & Auction (with Jimmy Carwile conducting the auction).

Ralph & Vicki Cianciarulo– Appearing February 5 – 13

The Cianciarulos are the husband and wife co-hosts of the award-winning Archer’s Choice and The Choice television shows.

Vicki Cianciarulo is credited with taking the largest wild white-tailed deer by a female on camera, with her Colorado buck scoring over 200 inches. She also has numerous black bear, caribou, moose, dall sheep, whitetail, mule deer, antelope, a turkey Grand Slam, and many different African species to her credit. Her history includes outfitting and guiding for both bear and deer, serving on conservation boards and editing and producing television shows.

National Shooting Sports Foundation

NEWTOWN, Conn. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Thousands of members and prospective members stopped by the NSSF booth in the second floor lobby of the SHOT Show, held Jan. 19-22, at the Sands Expo & Convention Center in Las Vegas.

There they received information, complimentary gifts for their support and perhaps a respite from the throngs of buyers and media that walked the aisles of the exhibit halls.

If it seemed like a lot of industry members were in attendance, preliminary figures bear out that impression:

• A record 31,280 buyers registered for the show.
• An all-time high of 1,804 professionals were issued media credentials.
• Overall attendance was 58,444, only a few hundred shy of the show’s all-time record set at the 2008 SHOT Show, held in Las Vegas.
• Exhibiting companies numbered nearly 1,800, about 125 of them international, covering 700,000 net square feet in the Sands Expo & Convention Center’s halls and the Venetian Hotel’s meeting rooms.
• SHOT Show University, the State of the Industry Dinner and the Law Enforcement education program were filled to capacity.

Preparations are already being made to assure that the 2011 SHOT Show, scheduled for Jan. 18-21 in the same venue, is not only as big as it was in 2010 but also that improvements will make it an even greater experience for all involved.

Pheasants Forever's National Pheasant Fest 2010

Des Moines, Iowa – -(AmmoLand.com)- February 16, 2010 – In conjunction with Pheasants Forever’s National Pheasant Fest, the Iowa Machine Shed restaurant in Des Moines, Iowa, has added pheasant to its menu for the weekend of the event.

National Pheasant Fest 2010 is February 26-28 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.

After taking in all that National Pheasant Fest has to offer and working up an appetite, attendees can enjoy a home-cooked quarter pheasant pan roasted and served in country gravy at the Iowa Machine Shed, located at Living History Farms in Urbandale, just minutes from downtown Des Moines.

“Our five word constitution is ‘Dedicated to the American Farmer,’” said Cat Penton, Executive Staff for the Machine Shed chain of restaurants. “We want everyone who comes to our restaurant to receive the Machine Shed experience of made from scratch, home-cooked meals served in the traditions of the farming community. For many in town that weekend, those traditions center on days afield pheasant hunting followed by fantastic pheasant dishes.”

The Iowa Machine Shed will serve pheasant on February 25-27 from 3PM to 10PM and on Sunday, February 28 from 11AM to 9PM. Additionally, if you’d like to know how to make this fantastic dish, Machine Shed Chef Roger Johnson will show Pheasant Fest attendees how he prepares the Machine Shed’s special pheasant recipe. The demonstration will be at 2PM on Friday, February 26 in seminar room 5 at the Iowa Events Center.

MacFarlane Pheasants, Inc is the supplier of the pheasant to be served at the Machine Shed. MacFarlane Pheasants, Inc. was also supplier of the pheasant served at the Presidential Inaugural luncheon in 2009. The Machine Shed was started 31 years ago in Iowa by Mike Whalen, founder and CEO.

National Wild Turkey Federation’s Convention & Sport Show

Nashville, Tenn - -(AmmoLand.com)-  Col. Tom Kelly, the “Poet Laureate of Wild Turkey Literature,” will be signing copies of his new book, “Infirm Opinions” during the National Wild Turkey Federation’s National Convention and Sport Show in Nashville, Tenn.

Kelly, who is still going strong at age 82, was named the NWTF’s 2009 Communicator of the Year and authors the humorous “Short Spurs” column in “Turkey Country” magazine. He’ll offer special deals and also sign and personalize copies of all his books, including many first editions in booth 139.

Buy “Infirm Opinions” and get a special, free DVD titled “Fan Club.” Produced by Ronnie “Cuz” Strickland, vice president of Mossy Oak Productions, “Fan Club” follows two wise old turkey hunters – Kelly and Strickland – as they learn about fanning, a great technique to bring in hung-up gobblers.
