title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- John Martin of Linden, Randy Willis of Augusta and Bruno Brun of Ann Arbor were selected to participate in the 2011 Pure Michigan Hunt, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment announced today.

The three were chosen by random drawing from 8,719 hunters who applied a total of 23,417 times for the opportunity to participate in every limited-access hunt in Michigan.

The Pure Michigan Hunt began in 2010. It allows hunters to participate in any season and hunt unit for elk, bear, spring turkey, fall turkey, antlerless deer and opening day of duck season on a managed waterfowl area.

Martin, a 40-year-old stay-at-home father, said he was “just overwhelmed” by the prospects.

“I’m really excited by the opening day duck hunt and, of course, the elk hunt – that’s kind of a hunt of a lifetime.

Martin, who applied for the Pure Michigan Hunt last year, said he bought two $4 applications this year.

Willis, a registered nurse who also applied last year, applied five times for the 2011 hunt.

“I’ve never had a chance to hunt elk and it’s one of my all-time favorite game animals,” Willis said. “This is a hunt of a lifetime – literally.”

Brun, a French-born plant manager – who also applied last year – said he bought applications a couple at a time until he wound up with 19 applications.

“I’ve hunted elk in New Mexico before,” Brun said. “It’s a good physical hunt and I’d love to do it in Michigan – it’s a great state for hunting.”

The Pure Michigan Hunt was developed by DNRE Wildlife Division Chief Russ Mason as a memorable opportunity for hunters that could also help raise money for the state’s Game and Fish Fund. This year’s lottery raised $94,000 for the fund.

“This is the best call I make all year – when I call the winners of the Pure Michigan Hunt,” Mason said. “Their excitement about hunting and their enthusiasm about Michigan hunting, especially, is always a proud moment for me and all my colleagues at the DNRE.”

Applications for the 2012 Pure Michigan Hunt go on sale beginning March 1.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment is committed to the conservation, protection, management, and accessible use and enjoyment of the state’s environment, natural resources, and related economic interests for current and future generations. title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- SHE Outdoor Apparel is proud to announce the launch of SHE Expeditions.

SHE Expeditions is a booking service that specializes in hunting, fishing and adventure trips for women, their families and companies.

What makes SHE Expeditions different from other booking services is that the staff has tested every destination in their portfolio, and they assist the client with every step of the booking process. She Expeditions offers tailored solutions for the concerns a lady may have about booking a trip.

“Women participating in hunting, shooting and fishing is a growing trend in our industry. First there was clothing that catered to women, the next logical step was an adventure booking service,” said Corinna Slaughter, Director of SHE Expeditions. “Whether it is a first trip or a 10th trip, we want our clients to have an unforgettable and memorable trip.”

SHE Expeditions caters to women, their families and companies. With each trip a client would expect to receive specific details of their destination. This includes what is and is not included in the cost, type of accommodations, guide information and meal services. Clients also receive a clothing and equipment list, so they are well equipped for their adventure. A final countdown is sent 30 days prior to the adventure, including emergency phone numbers, cell phone and Internet service details and transportation arrangements. SHE Expeditions is also only a call away should any questions arise.

“It is about time that ladies who love the outdoors have a service dedicated to ensuring fantastic trips for themselves and their families,” said Pam Zaitz, President and lead designer of SHE Outdoor Apparel. “We are proud to have SHE Expeditions part of the SHE Outdoor Apparel brand.”

Destinations in SHE Expedition’s diverse portfolio include North America, South America, Central America, Africa and the South Pacific. Clients can select numerous species to hunt big and small, go on a scenic fishing trip or a non-hunting adventure destination. For more information visit <a

The beautiful Gulf Coast provides ample activities for sportsmen and vacationers alike. Many local sportsmen make their living fishing the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico and now their livelihoods are in jeopardy. We want to support the region and our fellow sportsmen by encouraging people to not forget the Gulf Coast this summer season.

Summer Destinations List

Wollaston Lake, Saskatchewan – Fishing for Giant Northern Pike – Wollaston Lake Lodge: In-Fisherman TV host Steve Hoffman selected this Canadian lake as his top summer sportsman destination: “A trip to this fly-in destination in northern Saskatchewan is one-stop shopping for the angler looking for superb fishing for giant northern pike, plus plenty of walleyes and lake trout. The lodge and lodging are plush, with the meals prepared by a top chef. Kick back in the bar and tie a few more flies and tell a few lies before dinner after a long day on the water. A guide will also prepare a classic midday shore lunch if you want, with walleyes as fresh as can be from crystal clear water. Pampering aside, the trip is all about the fishing—world-class fishing in some of the most beautiful country in North America.” www.wollastonlakelodge.com.

Grand Cascapedia Valley – Fly fishing on the Gaspe’ Peninsula in Quebec – Salmon Lodge: Diana Rudolph, co-host of Breaking the Surface: “Salmon Lodge lies on the fabled banks of the Grand Cascapedia, a historical river known for its unbelievably huge Atlantic salmon. This ‘camp’ offers angler’s beats on three rivers: the Cascapedia, the Petite Cascapedia and the Bonaventure, the later being my favorite because of its gin-clear water and boulder-studded bottom. In this river, the immense fish appear almost ghostlike, levitating around the rocks. And when one gulps your colossal size-2 dry fly and rockets from the water like a bright silver bullet, you’ll be hooked for life. In addition to the tremendous fishing, the accommodations are very welcoming and comfortable with an understated charm, and the guides and staff are extremely attentive and knowledgeable. It is always both a treat and pleasure to stay at this lodge and wade these waters. It’s Atlantic salmon fishing at its finest.” www.thesalmonlodge.ca

Bitterroot Valley, Montana – Fly fishing the Bitterroot/Blackwater Rivers – Backdoor Outfitters: Jed Fiebelkorn, host of TU’s On the Rise: “The combination of location, affordability and the friendliness and expertise of the guides at Backdoor Outfitters makes it the place where I’d like to spend my summer vacation. Located in the heart of Montana’s picturesque Bitterroot Valley, Backdoor Outfitters offers guided fly-fishing trips on the Bitterroot and Blackfoot rivers, two of western Montana’s most storied fly-fishing waters. With comfortable, cozy accommodations, hearty breakfasts and streamside lunches, Backdoor Outfitters offers fly-fishing trips that will surely be etched in your memory forever. Their expert guides can help beginners and experienced anglers alike. Situated on a trout-filled stream, Backdoor Outfitters is the perfect place to spend a fly-fishing vacation.” www.backdooroutfitters.com

Truckee River, Sierra Nevada – Fishing with Reno Fly Shop Guides – El Dorado Hotel Casino in Reno: Chad Belding of The Fowl Life: “My favorite summer destination is the Truckee River between Lake Tahoe and Reno in the beautiful eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. The river provides some excellent fishing during the summer months and the guides at the Reno Fly Shop are experts on the local water. They know the hatches, the timetables, the riverbeds, and food beds. Bottom line, they know how to get you on the fish. This in addition to these guided trips, being very affordable is what keeps me coming back to this area year after year. I love to either navigate the river on a float trip or by cruising the shorelines in search of some new honey holes. My favorite locations to fly fish on the Truckee River are literally minutes from Downtown Reno Nevada and Lake Tahoe. There is a ton to do after I get off of the river with great food, summertime activities, concerts, sporting events, and of course the mountains. I suggest staying at the El Dorado Hotel Casino in Reno. The Eldorado is a locally owned Hotel-Casino that offers nothing but first class accommodations.” www.renoflyshop.com www.EldoradoReno.com

Tres Piedras, New Mexico – Antelope Hunting with United States Outfitters – Running Elk Lodge Bed & Breakfast: Jason Say of Wired Outdoors: “When it comes to hunting in the summer, sometimes the options are limited. There is nothing like getting out in August and matching wits with the wary Antelope. As far as why we hunt New Mexico with United States Outfitters is because they are simply one of the best. Whether they are guiding you for elk, or Kansas whitetail, they run a first-class operation and always deliver on their promises. By far my favorite summertime “Sportsman” destination is chasing antelope in New Mexico with United States Outfitters. There is nothing better than staying in the rolling hills of New Mexico in a small hunting camp and hunting the speedy antelope.” www.huntuso.com

Eastern Texas – Fishing at Sam Rayburn Lake – Tiger Creek Lodge: Scott Turnage of G3 Sportsman: “My favorite summer ‘Sportsman’ destination is fishing the Sam Rayburn Lake in East Texas. I enjoy crappie fishing and Sam Rayburn offers some fantastic opportunities to catch big numbers. I always stay at Tiger Creek Lodge near Brookeland, TX (about 20 miles north of Jasper) and my favorite guide is ‘Uncle’ Bill Fondren. Bill is well known throughout Texas for his crappie expertise and has been guiding for over 20 years. The food at Tiger Creek Lodge is fantastic! Home cooked meals featuring everything from chicken-n-dumplings to juicy rib eye steaks. The lodging rates are extremely affordable and the rooms are clean very comfortable. No problems with boat storage either. The lodge is on the water so, slide your boat in and go. In close proximity to Tiger Creek Lodge are golf courses, restaurants, convenience stores, and bait shops, all less than 10 minutes away. Sam Rayburn is a beautiful lake with over 114,000 acres of water and also the number two big bass lake in the country. Ten-pound largemouth bass are common and anglers from across the nation flock to Rayburn in hopes of landing a trophy.” www.3-stexasoutdoors.com

Fairfield County, Connecticut – Fly fishing the western Long Island Sound – The Delamar Hotel – Newly named Sportsman Channel CEO Gavin Harvey prefers to stay local for his summer outing: “After Memorial Day when the New England weather turns warm and the days are long, I beg for invitations from FWBs (Friends With Boats) to chase stripers on the Sound. Launching out of Fairfield County’s coastal towns like Greenwich, Norwalk, and Westport, a small navy of dedicated fly fisherman relentlessly patrol the nooks and hooks, reefs and rocks of this beautiful shoreline for our local treasure, striped bass. For this angler, there is no greater rush than launching a clouser fly into a mad frenzy of stripers – who have penned a few acres of baitfish against the surface – and then hooking, playing and landing one of these crazy beasts. Check out Fishermansworld.net or Orvis.com/Darien to get hooked up. If you get hungry waiting for the tide to change, cruise up Five Mile River in Rowayton and tether up the boat at ‘The Restaurant’. And since you’re going to feel like a king, you might as well live like one by staying at The Delamar on Greenwich Harbor, where you might see some stripers from your room.” www.thedelamar.com www.rowaytonseafoodcompany.com

South Texas – Nilgai & Hog Hunting – River Walk and King Ranch –Haley Heath, host of Family Traditions: “The summer time is a wonderful time to get your children involved in hunting and shooting. This summer, we went to South Texas and to hunt the elusive Nilgai and hogs. Gunner (age 5) and Dakota (age 3) had a great time and both had successful hunts! An all together great adventure for the whole family. When traveling for the Nilgai hunt you fly into San Antonio, which is a great family destination already with attractions such as the River Walk and Sea World. You can add in these attractions and pick two to three days out to travel to the King Ranch where they will provide lodging and great South Texas food!” www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Wellsboro, Pennsylvania – Fishing the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon – Antler’s Inn: Alan Probst, host of All Outdoors w/ Alan Probst: “One of the best summer destinations in all of North America is in my home state of Pennsylvania. In the North Central part of the state near Wellsboro is the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon that has Pine Creek and many of its tributaries meandering through the center. I always stay at the rustic log cabins and subsequent restaurant at the Antler’s Inn right outside of Ansonia, Pa. No guide is needed as Pine Creek and most all of the streams that cascade into it are full of brown, brook and rainbow trout as well as a few Class A wild brook trout streams that are there to wet your line in. This area truly is majestic in its beauty and fishing on any of these streams can take an angler back in time to a vision of yesteryear with its solitude.” http://www.antlerinninc.com

Southern Utah – Hunting/Exploring in the southern Utah desert – Tent/Roughing it: Modern Rifle Adventures hosts J. Guthrie and Dick Metcalf had a hard time agreeing on their favorite destinations – so we went with Dick’s wild, roughing-it destination: “Myself, I like to go out stalking predators alone in the southern Utah desert, sleeping on the ground, eating roots and berries and lizards, with only one magazine for my AR. At least it would get me away from Guthrie… My favorite destinations don’t involve lodges or outfitters, and nowhere reputable will let Guthrie in the door,” says Metcalf. “I like lap-of-luxury lodges,” muses Guthrie, “where scantily-clad cocktail waitresses greet returning safari vehicles at day’s end with icy drinks on silver trays. Don’t know why I keep getting turned away at the door.” No wonder this show is entertaining! www.utah.com

About Sportsman Channel:
Women’s Outdoor Media Association

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- A few weeks ago several members of the Women’s Outdoor Media Association attended the annual NRA Meetings and Exhibits in Charlotte, N.C.

It was an AWESOME experience, between outstanding speakers, a record-breaking number of exhibitors and attendees, plus a wonderful response to The WOMA’s hospitality suite hosted throughout the Saturday of the convention.

In a few weeks, my video editing guru, Marilyn Vogel of ProVideos 4 U, will have finished a webisode filmed at the NRA event. We’ll post the video at the website, www.thewoma.com, so you’ll have the opportunity to meet a variety of interesting new WOMA members, including Olympic Biathlon twin sisters, Tracy and Lanny Barnes.

The Barnes sisters, along with several other men and women of all ages and media backgrounds, are exactly the “breaths of fresh air” that our outdoor industry needs, especially if we hope to continue to encourage mainstream media to cover our industry in a pro-gun way—and we do!

As the camp director of Babes with Bullets, I know that at almost every BWB camp across the US we enjoy pro-gun mainstream media coverage (check out the newest pieces from NBC and ABC at the Babes With Bullets website.) Whether at Babes with Bullets or other arenas of The WOMA based on hunting, fishing, the shooting sports and archery, the goal of The WOMA is to build a unique human interest story about and around women, not a story about political parties or turf wars.

The saga of Tracy and Lanny, from their World Cup wins, to their experiences at the 2010 Winter Olympics, and now their goal of the 2014 Winter Olympics, is just one of many intriguing storylines. Visit Tracy and Lanny’s website at www.TwinBiathletes.com.

The gals are actively building their sponsorship and fan base, and I believe The WOMA is the perfect vehicle to help them with that task! WOMA President Barb Baird and I are already talking about traveling to Russia for the 2014 Olympics so we can cheer on our fellow WOMA members in their quest for an Olympic medal, so stay tuned for more information as time goes on.

Katherine Browne and Kay the Hawk

We’re also hoping that Tracy and Lanny can make it to the first WOMA retreat to be held at Gunnison, Colo., from Friday, October 8 to Tuesday, October 12. This retreat, with housing provided at Three Rivers Resort, is being arranged through another outstanding member, Katherine Browne, of the Prois Pro Hunting Staff. Katherine has put together for us a wonderful (and significantly discounted) package including grouse hunting, fly fishing and something I’ve wanted to do for years: working and hunting with falcons. How cool is that!

We have a large lodge reserved and can accommodate a total of 12 people for this event, though several spots were already spoken for as soon as we announced the retreat. So far we have three couples and two other members. If you’re interested, please contact me by e-mail (Deb@theWOMA.com) ASAP, as it takes a deposit of $100 per person to hold your spot. We estimate the cost for lodging, chipping in for food, a one-day grouse hunting license, a full day of fly fishing, etc. will run roughly $450 per person for the whole event. This is a great program offered at a discount for The WOMA, though due to lack of slots we are limiting this event to adults only.

I hope to meet more of you at the October retreat and in the meantime please submit your articles, photos, short blogs (whatever) to The WOMA so we can see what you are doing in your outdoor life! class="wp-caption-text">Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation

MISSOULA, Montana --(AmmoLand.com)- First came the vacation. Then, the staycation. Now comes a newly coined concept, the conservacation.

It’s a vacation focused on conservation, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is recommending 25 top educational destinations where families can experience and enjoy learning about elk, other wildlife and their habitat.

Elk viewing areas like Rocky Mountain National Park and Theodore Roosevelt National Park are well known, but RMEF’s list is a compilation of alternative spots.

“With summer upon us and many families thinking about a getaway, we’re pleased to suggest the following locations,” said David Allen, RMEF president and CEO.

“All of these places are worth a visit any time of year, but some really come to life when elk are rutting or on wintering grounds. That’s when visitors are most likely to see these animals up close and possibly observe a spectacle of nature they’ll never forget—hearing an elk bugle for the first time has inspired many a new conservationist.”

Of course, hearing a turkey gobble, watching a whitetail doe and fawn, and countless other experiences can have the same effect. /> Dead Down Wind is a premium supplier of quality scent prevention products and D2W Guide Gear designed to help outdoor enthusiasts become more successful in the field. Dead Down Wind revolutionized the scent elimination industry through the development of a bio-engineered process known as ESPTM (Enzyme Scent Protection). Through this process a strand of enzymes is created a broad spectrum of odors not just bacteria – the source of human odor. Unlike cover sprays that can only attempt to mask these odors, or carbon clothing that only attempts to contain it., enzymes go well beyond the scope of typical antimicrobials in both effectiveness and the range of odors controlled.
Tags: Pennsylvania Game Commission

HARRISBURG, Pa –-(AmmoLand.com)- With thousands of Pennsylvania hunters heading off to hunt big game in other states and Canadian provinces, Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe reminds hunters that, in an effort to prevent the introduction of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) into the Commonwealth, the agency prohibits hunters from importing specific carcass parts from members of the deer family – including mule deer, elk and moose – from 14 states and two Canadian provinces.

Roe noted that this importation ban is a revised executive order signed into effect in May, and affects hunters heading to: Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York (only from CWD containment area), Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, West Virginia (only from Hampshire County), Wisconsin and Wyoming; as well as the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Roe emphasized that the new executive order prohibits hunters from bringing back the tissue described below from any cervid from these states or provinces, whether the animal was taken from the wild or from a captive, high-fence operation.

The specific carcass parts, where the CWD prions (the causative agent) concentrates in cervids, that cannot be brought back to Pennsylvania by hunters are:

the head (including brain, tonsils, eyes and lymph nodes)

spinal cord/backbone

spleen

skull plate with attached antlers, if visible brain or spinal cord tissue is present

cape, if visible brain or spinal cord tissue is present

upper canine teeth, if root structure or other soft tissue is present

any object or article containing visible brain or spinal cord tissue

unfinished taxidermy mounts; and brain-tanned hides.

Roe noted that the prohibition does not limit the importation of: meat, without the backbone; cleaned skull plate with attached antlers, if no visible brain or spinal cord tissue is present; tanned hide or raw hide with no visible brain or spinal cord tissue present; cape, if no visible brain or spinal cord tissue is present; upper canine teeth, if no root structure or other soft tissue is present; and finished taxidermy mounts.

Pennsylvania hunters heading to a state with a history of CWD should become familiar with that state’s wildlife regulations and guidelines for the transportation of harvested game animals. Wildlife officials have suggested hunters in areas where CWD is known to exist follow these recommendations to prevent the possible spread of the disease:

- Do not shoot, handle or consume any animal that appears sick; contact the state wildlife agency if you see or harvest an animal that appears sick.

- Wear rubber or latex gloves when field-dressing carcasses.

- Bone out the meat from your animal.

- Minimize the handling of brain and spinal tissues.

- Wash hands and instruments thoroughly after field-dressing is completed.

- Request that your animal is processed individually, without meat from other animals being added to meat from your animal, or process your own meat if you have the tools and ability to do so.

- Have your animal processed in the endemic area of the state where it was harvested, so that high-risk body parts can be properly disposed of there. Only bring permitted materials back to Pennsylvania.

- Don’t consume the brain, spinal cord, eyes, spleen, tonsils or lymph nodes of harvested animals. (Normal field-dressing, coupled with boning out a carcass, will remove most, if not all, of these body parts. Cutting away all fatty tissue will help remove remaining lymph nodes.)

- Consider not consuming the meat from any animal that tests positive for the disease.

Roe said hunters who harvest a deer, elk or moose in a state or province where CWD is known to exist should follow that state’s wildlife agency’s instructions on how and where to submit the appropriate samples to have their animal tested. If, after returning to Pennsylvania, a hunter is notified that his or her game tested positive for CWD, the hunter is encouraged to contact the Game Commission for disposal recommendations and assistance.

The Game Commission, with the assistance of the Pennsylvania and U.S. departments of Agriculture, has conducted tests on more than 18,000 deer and elk that have either died of unknown illnesses, were exhibiting abnormal behavior, or were killed by hunters. No evidence of CWD has been found in any of these samples.

The Game Commission will continue to monitor this disease and collect samples from deer and elk that appear sick or behave abnormally. The agency plans to test all hunter-killed elk and approximately 4,000 hunter-harvested wild deer for CWD again this year.

First identified in 1967, CWD is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) that affects cervids, including all species of deer, elk and moose. It is a progressive and always fatal disease of the nervous system. Scientists theorize CWD is caused by an unknown agent capable of transforming normal brain proteins into an abnormal form.

There currently is no practical way to test live animals for CWD, nor is there a vaccine. Clinical signs include poor posture, lowered head and ears, uncoordinated movement, rough-hair coat, weight loss, increased thirst, excessive drooling, and, ultimately, death. There is currently no scientific evidence that CWD has or can spread to humans, either through contact with infected animals or by eating meat of infected animals. The Center for Disease Control has investigated any connection between CWD and the human forms of TSEs and stated

“the risk of infection with the CWD agent among hunters is extremely small, if it exists at all” and “it is extremely unlikely that CWD would be a food-borne hazard.”

“Hunters spend a lot of time in the woods, and are a valuable source of information to wildlife agencies across the United States,” Roe said. “If a hunter sees a deer or elk behaving abnormally, or dying from unknown causes, contact the state wildlife agency and provide as much specific information as possible about where the animal was seen.”

In 2005, Pennsylvania CWD task force members completed the state’s response plan, which outlines ways to prevent CWD from entering our borders and, in the event CWD is found in Pennsylvania, how to detect it, contain it and work to eradicate it. The task force was comprised of representatives from the Governor’s Office, the Game Commission, the state Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the state Department of Health, the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, as well as representatives from stakeholder groups including hunters, deer farmers, deer processors and taxidermists. Initiated in 2003, a copy of the final plan can be viewed on the Game Commission’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) by clicking on “CWD Update” in the “Quick Clicks” box in the upper right-hand corner of the homepage.

“We know that Pennsylvania hunters are just as concerned about keeping CWD out of Pennsylvania as we are, and we are confident that they will do all they can to protect the Commonwealth’s whitetail and elk populations,” Roe said.

Other information, including tips for taxidermists and meat processors, can be found on the Game Commission’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) in the CWD Update.

Websites for all 50 state wildlife agencies can be accessed via the Game Commission’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us). Click on the “Related Links” section at the bottom of the homepage, then select “Wildlife Agencies,” and then choose the state of interest from the map.

Additional information on CWD can be found on the CWD Alliance’s website (www.cwd-info.org).
Tags: <a
