class="wp-caption-text">AmmoLand Gun News

BARRY, Illinois --(Ammoland.com)- Doug Koenig won the Masters International Shooting Championship at PASA Park in Barry, Illinois for an unprecedented seventeenth time.

This was Koenig’s third major title of the 2010 competitive shooting season and his twelfth straight Masters Championship.

Koenig’s victory was impressive with strong showings in each of the events. In the Handgun Precision event, Koenig fired a score of 35. At the Handgun Long Range event, Koenig’s score was 39. Koenig’s time at the Handgun Action event was 21.60.

Koenig said that “every Masters is a bit different and exciting. I really love the match because it calls for so many different skills and it always taxes me.” Koenig expressed a desire to see the match grow and bring in a whole host of new shooters. “We need more new shooters to try their hand at this match,” said Koenig.

Koenig brought along a guest to the 2010 event. His eleven year old son, Trevor, also took part in the championship. Trevor Koenig took the Sub-Junior title with a score of 19 at the Handgun Precision event; a score of 39 at the Handgun Long Range event; and a time of 41.36 at the Handgun Action event. The Sub-Junior events have slightly different courses of fire than the main championship events. When asked about his reaction to shooting with his famous Dad at a major championship, Trevor said that it “was fun.” When asked about his favorite event, Trevor said he liked the action event the most because, “it was fun shooting fast.”

The Masters International Shooting Championship calls for a wide range of marksmanship skills. A shooter must demonstrate “bullseye” skills, speed shooting, and metallic silhouette proficiency. Competitors compete at a speed event that undergoes periodic changes in the course of fire in order to add a fresh flavor to the event. The tournament tests every facet of a shooter’s handgun skills.

This was Koenig’s third victory of the season. U.S. Practical Shooting Association
COVINGTON, Ga. --(AmmoLand.com)- When the final scores were tallied at this year’s U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) Area 6 Handgun Championship, the name Max Michel once again topped the list of Open division shooters giving the Team Sig shooter a record seven straight titles at the match.
Michel initially planned to compete in the Production division where Sig’s duty-style pistols naturally fall, but when the reigning national champion reviewed the course design and what top shooters would be attending, he quickly changed his plans in order to compete in Open.
“With KC Eusebio and Chris Tilley in the match, and more than 100 shooters total, the Area 6 match was beginning to look like a match on a par with the USPSA Nationals,” explained Michel.
“The difficulty of the stages in this match, along with the talent I’d face, gave me my best opportunity to practice my Open division shooting before the Nationals later this year and I wasn’t going to pass that up.”
And excellent practice it was as Michel won seven stages in a row to hold off former Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU) teammate Eusebio for the win.
Michel finished the match with a score of 1191.4037, just over 27 points ahead of second place Eusebio’s 1163.8470. Finishing in third was the 2007 National Open Champion and Team SVI shooter Chris Tilley who finish more than 60 points behind Michel with 1130.0780.
Fourth place went to David Pruitt of Team Red Dot Shooting who won the first stage in the match but fell out of contention with four misses and a final score of 1033.7806. Fifth place went to current AMU team member Shane Coley who posted a 1031.3844.
All of the top five are ranked as Grand Masters in the sport, the highest skill level in Practical Shooting. A total of 12 Grand Masters and 15 Masters competed in the Open division making it the toughest of the match.
Among the women competing in the division, Jessie Abbate, who is on the verge of announcing her new sponsor, topped the field and finished 18th overall in her first Open match with a score of 858.5236. Abbate, who has been a force in the Production and Limited-10 divisions both regionally and nationally, entered the Open division after just two weeks behind the gun.
The title of top Junior went to Nicholas Neel, also a Grand Master, who placed 14th overall with a score of 908.5281. The high Senior title was won by Teddy Llasos with 764.5002, which placed him 37th in the field. The Super Senior title went to Robert Keller, one of the Master level shooters in the match, who finished 22nd overall with a final score of 827.3644.
The Area 6 Handgun Championship was held at the South River Gun Club range in Covington, Ga. and sponsored by Georgia-based firearms maker Glock. The match drew 384 top shooters from around the country as well [...]

Shooter Max Michel Wins 7th Straight USPSA Area 6 Open Title

A: Howard, KS

Q: What is the point of view or purpose of CAScity?
A: CAS city’s goal is to promote Cowboy Action Shooting and their organizations like SASS, NCOWS, Western 3Gun, their clubs and non affiliated clubs.

Q: How long has your CAScity been active?
A: Since 1995

Q: Technically CAScity is more than a blog what else it there to see and do on your website?
A: The CAScity forum and the integrated classified section are features in addition to our news and blog section which also promotes the television show Cowboys on Outdoor Channel.

Q: You can not possibly do everything on CAScity, who else helps you out?
A: The CAScity blog and news section is primarily maintained by me. The forum section is moderated by 20 volunteers among cowboy action shooters, many of them have been moderators for over 10 years.

Q: What do you do for a living or is your CAScity a full time job?
A: CAScity is part of Down Range Media owned by me and my wife, Teresa. Maintaining CAScity is part of my full time job as a consultant, producer and editor for Outdoor Channel with emphasis on shooting sports and personal defense. This is done in partnership with Michael Bane, producer of Shooting Gallery, Cowboys and The Best Defense.

Q: Do you have any other digital sites?
A: I maintain and have the editorial responsibility of DownRange.TV owned by Outdoor Channel. Michael Bane and I established DRTV in 2007. It is a multimedia web site with the primary goal of promoting Outdoor Channel’s original production on Wednesday night, programs like the ones mentioned above and S.W.A.T. Magazine TV.

Q: For those that have no idea, what is Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS)?
A: Cowboy Action Shooting is a highly multifaceted shooting sports where participants compete with original of replica firearms from the 19th century, primarily from 1860 to the turn of the century. The sport was formally established in the late 1970s by former IPSC shooters, later organized by Single Action Shooting Society. In later years, organizations like National Congress of Old West Shootists and Western 3Gun came on board and combined they administer around 100,000 shooters worldwide.

Q: Marshal, some of our readers may not believe this but you have a lot more interests than CAS, what else gets you fired up you these days?
A: I am blessed to have a job which also integrates my hobbies. Hey, some even claim I shouldn’t call it a job…. LOL

All in all, as an editor involved in many levels of content production (text, stills, video, podcasts), travelling to events around the country, there is little time for much beside work. 2/3 of my time is devoted to DownRange.TV and projects together with my partner and good friend, Michael Bane.

I am also fortunate to have a wife who shares my interests and we just returned from Arizona where we both participated in the National Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting.

Q: What is one thing that you want your readers to know about you?
A: I have always been engaged and devoted to get more people involved in shooting sports not just cowboy action shooting. My priority is more related to demystifying the sport and make people understand that shooting sports are comprised of 99% “regular” people and 1% top shooters. We have given the 1% well deserved and good coverage in a variety of media, but I do believe it is important from a recruiting standpoint to show all levels including the recreational shooters.

Q: What was the best thing you did on CAScity that go the most reaction from your readers?
A: I cannot pinpoint anything in particular, but what needs to be mentioned is the fact that we have been able to run the site for as long as we have and where people can find a starting point to join the sport , meet new friend and interact with each other. I think our consistency in running the site and the moderators excellent work in keeping the forum a friendly place for everyone is the major factor for a good feedback and loyalty.

Q: What was the worst thing you did on CAScity that go the most reaction from your readers?
A: Worst thing…. the fact that I have not had time to resume the production of Cowboy Action Radio, the podcast related to the sport. I cannot promise if or when at this time, but I would like to get it started as soon as time allows.

Q: What is your favorite firearm and why?
A: The most difficult question of all…. I would say it is a shared first place between the Colt Single Action Army and 1911.

Q: What things would you like to do or expand in CAScity to in the future?
A: Our biggest challenge is to recruit new shooters and especially the younger generation. We are currently working with SASS (Single Action Shooting Society) to establish projects which hopefully will increase membership. CAScity, DownRange.TV and the show Cowboys will all be a part of this.

Q: Obviously since we are featuring you that means CAScity is Pro gun? What do you think the outlook is for the future of gun rights in America?
A: I am a Second Amendment Absolutist and as concerned about our gun rights as my fellow NRA members. I believe our major focus is “Not to take what we have for granted”. I hope McDonald v. Chicago can establish once and for all that the Second Amendment is an individual right no matter where you live in the US.

Q: What would you like to say to those that are anti gun or maybe just unsure of the purpose of guns in our society today?
A: Step away from the fixed mindset for a moment and spend some time with gun owners in their own environment. I have personally witnessed anti gun people change their mind after being invited to a gun club and spent some time with gun owners at a shooting range. Let me add that Cowboy Action Shooting is a perfect door opener for people who for various reasons cannot understand the so called gun culture and I personally know fellow shooters who has gone from being totally anti gun to become active shooters and NRA members.

Visit: U.S. Practical Shooting Association

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. —-(AmmoLand.com)- By just over half a point, Eva Micklethwaite managed to edge out Jenny Chu to pick up her first Area win and the coveted Women’s Open division title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Handgun Championships.

Micklethwaite, who was a member of the Team USA and helped win the gold in 2008 at the International Practical Shooting Confederation’s (IPSC) World Shoot XV in Bali, Indonesia, was also crowned High Lady, a title that goes to the top overall female shooter in the match.

Through most of the match Chu held the lead with five key stage wins among the women shooters. Yet Micklethwaite stayed within striking distance giving Chu a 30 point led early but closing the gap to just under 10 points by the ninth stage.

With just two stages remaining Micklethwaite made her move.

On the tenth stage Mickelthwaite picked up 14 points on Chu by scoring 18 A zone hits and 6 C zone hits. Chu put 20 solid A zone hits down range but dropped points with a B, C and D hit as well as one Miss and one No-Shoot. This gave Micklethwaite a slim lead of just 4.5637 points going into the final stage.

With the match slipping away, Chu tried to recover putting eight of her ten shots in the A zone with the remaining two falling in the C zone. She picked up just over 42 points on the stage but it wasn’t enough as Micklethwaite scored six A zone hits and four C zone hits giving her slightly more than 37 points for the stage.

When all the scores were tallied, Micklethwaite’s late surge put her just 0.5715 points ahead of Chu with a final score of 1120.3398 to 1119.7683.

“This was one of the closest matches of the season and nothing short of nail biter. Both Eva and Jenny battled all the way, even through the very last shot of the match. It’s a big win for Eva and one that is well deserved,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Rounding out the top five were Team Smith & Wesson’s Kay Miculek in third with 1098.2849, Valarie Levanza-Rosales in fourth with 1061.9108 and Lily Chung in fifth with 985.5508.

The match, which was held November 12-15 at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club in Mesa, Ariz., drew a total of 355 shooters who put a combined 100,000-plus rounds down range competing for regional championship titles in the Open, Limited, Limited-10, Production, Revolver and Single Stack divisions.

The USPSA Area 2 region includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii and New Mexico but shooters from around the country attended.

About USPSA:
U.S. Practical Shooting Association

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — -(AmmoLand.com)- It took until the eleventh and final stage at the 2009 Area 2 USPSA Regional Handgun Championships before Dave Sevigny of Smyrna, Ga. was able to overtake Nils Jonasson of Mesa, Ariz. and repeat as the Production division champion. It is the fifth time Sevigny has won at Area 2 Production title.

Jonasson started the match strong winning the first three stages followed by a third place finish on stage four, behind Sevigny and the stage winner Gary Chan of Anaheim Hills, Calif., then again taking the stage win on the fifth stage. Halfway through the match, Jonasson, a Grand Master shooter who won the Production title in 2007, found himself in first place with a lead of more than 34 points over the defending champion.

Then on the sixth stage Sevigny, who is the captain of Team Glock and himself a Grand Master competitor, began his comeback winning that stage and the next four. Despite remaining behind Jonasson, who managed to keep the lead by finishing second on stages six, seven, eight and ten, Sevigny put himself just over five points down but in a prime position to win the match on the final stage.

On stage 11, the 50-point 10-round final stage of the match, Jonasson finished with seven A zone hits and three C zone hits for a total of 44 points shot in a time of 6.99 seconds giving him a 6.2947 hit factor and a final stage score of 39.8894. He finished the match with a final overall score of 1424.6612.

Sevigny, who is known for both his tremendous speed and accuracy, proceeded to attack the final stage posting the fastest time of any production shooter, 5.83 seconds, and scoring 46 points on eight A zone hits and two C zone hits for a hit factor of 7.8902 that won him both the stage and the match. Sevigny finished the match with a final score of 1429.3106 and a narrow 4.6494 advantage of Jonasson to take the win.

“This was classic production division battle and demonstrates how competitive this division truly is,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association. “Dave shot an excellent come-from-behind match winning not just the Area 2 Championship but his seventh Area title of the 2009 season.”

Rounding out the top five in the Production competition were three Master level shooters. Gary Chan finished third with 1268.6316 points while Kyle Schmidt of Gilbert, Ariz. took fourth shooting 1239.7421 and Jim Levis of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. finished fifth with 1196.4295 points.

The USPSA Area 2 region includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii and New Mexico but shooters from throughout the country attended.

About USPSA:<br

Zimmerman of Commerce City, Colo. took the lead early winning the first two stages and holding the lead until the fifth stage when Shaver overtook him.

Despite the fact he didn’t win a single stage in the match, Shaver, who hails from Mission Viejo, Calif., was able to hold on to his lead all the way through the ninth stage and ultimately finish second with a score of 1371.2384.

Rubalcaba began to make his move by winning the sixth stage. He then proceeded to win the eighth, ninth and tenth stages. These three consecutive stage wins propelled Rubalcaba to the front and allowed him to take lead on the tenth stage.

Rubalcaba’s rally helped him finish the match more than 24 points ahead of Shaver and over 46 points ahead of Zimmerman and to post a final winning score of 1395.5247.

“With a little less than 50 points separating the top four shooters in the Limited-10 match, Steve had his handles full. The match, which was sponsored by Illinois-based firearms maker Springfield Armory, drew more than 255 top 1911 pistol shooters from around the country.

Despite winning just one of the 20 stages, Leatham led through the entire competition and finished with a final score of 1197.4090. The win represents Leatham’s 15th straight in the match that was previously known as the Single Stack Classic.

Team STI member and Chino, Calif., resident Michael Voigt rallied back from finishing ninth in 2008 to take second place. His final score of 1178.2523 put him just over 19 points behind Leatham.

Taran Butler of Simi Valley, Calif., claimed third for the second year in a row by winning four stages and posting a final score of 1161.7933. Earlier this year Butler defeated Leatham to win the Western States Single Stack Classic.

Rounding out the top five were Para USA’s Todd Jarrett of Hopewell, Va., and Smith & Wesson team shooter BJ Norris of Tyler, Texas, in fourth and fifth shooting 1151.1429 and 1112.6781 respectively.

The Single Stack Nationals were established in 1994 as the Single Stack Classic by pistolsmith Richard Heinie, and then USPSA Illinois Section Coordinator, Russell Cluver. The match was designed specifically for the 1911 model pistol and no other pistol design is permitted in the competition. In 2006 USPSA designated the popular match as a national championship and it has remained the preeminent showcase for the venerable 1911 ever since.

About USPSA:
U.S. Practical Shooting Association

Sedro-Woolley, WA - -(AmmoLand.com)- The United States Practical Shooting Association, or USPSA, is a non-profit membership organization that serves as the national governing body of Practical Shooting and is the US Region of the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC). Its 16,500 members, and 350 affiliated clubs, make USPSA the dominant competitive pistol shooting organization in the United States and the largest Region within IPSC.

IPSC was formed in 1976 at a meeting in Columbia, Missouri, lead by the late Jeff Cooper. It was here that the sport of Practical Shooting was formally established after years of independent efforts around the country to build upon the handgun skills and training for self defense. The early days of the sport can be traced back to the 1950’s and the quick draw “leather slap” competitions that grew out of America’s love affair with the TV westerns of that era.

Practical Shooting challenged the then accepted standards of technique, training practices and equipment. Its early pioneers developed scenario-based competitions to accurately measure the effectiveness of their own shooting techniques and equipment. The rapid shooting on-the-move style of Practical Shooting gave birth to the term “Run and Gun” so commonly used today to describe the sport.

For 30 years the sport has served as the test bed for new products and the unofficial R&D for the firearms industry. With some competitors annually shooting in excess of 100,000 rounds, no other venue offers a better in-service assessment of a firearm’s performance or the brutal gauntlet of high-level competition through which a gun must survive to be declared reliable.

Looking back, the gun handling skills, equipment advances and firearms and accessories development initiated by Practical Shooting competitors have changed the face of law enforcement and military training and equipment.

Today, USPSA stands at the forefront of the dynamic shooting practices utilized by professionals around the world and its top shooters are routinely called upon to train elite military and law enforcement units. Membership in USPSA opens the door to a wide range of matches regularly conducted around the country and automatically includes membership in IPSC and entrée to the world stage for Practical Shooting. And it is on that stage you’ll find USPSA members dominating the ranks of the world’s best shooters.

Visit <a

Norris and Kay Miculek contributed to wins in the Production, Open and Ladies Open Divisions. The 2008 World Shoot featured 900 participants from 55 countries across the globe. During the match, the U.S. Team dominated earning 10 overall titles, with the Italian National Team finishing second with four overall title wins.

Competing in the Production Division, Pennsylvania native David Olhasso helped the U.S. Team achieve a world title over the second place Czech Republic team. With his individual scores, Olhasso finished 14th overall against the 281 other competitors in the division, contributing to a 231-point team victory. Throughout the six days of heated competition, Olhasso used a Smith & Wesson M&P9L pistol in each of the 36 stages, marking the pistols debut in IPSC world competition.

“The World Shoot is really a six-day long match of survival that is held only once every three years,” said Olhasso. “With such a long format compared to the matches we typically compete in, you know going into the event that you’re going to have a challenging day. The trick is being able to overcome that by minimizing how much it affects you mentally.”

In addition to the duration of the six-day match, U.S. shooters also had to cope with travel, high humidity, unfamiliar surroundings, different cuisine and lack of family or local support. Olhasso, who was competing in his second World Shoot, noted that despite the challenging conditions, his equipment performed well throughout the match, giving him extra confidence.

“The first day of the competition was certainly not my best performance, but having used a variety of pistols from the M&P Series throughout the season, I was confident in the capabilities of the M&P9L, knowing that it would run both accurately and reliably,” said Olhasso. “By the end of the competition, the M&P9L had met all of my expectations, performing flawlessly in its first IPSC world level match.”

Also competing for the U.S. Team were Team Smith & Wesson members B.J. Norris and Kay Miculek. The 19-year-old Norris helped the U.S. Team capture a first place victory in the Open Division while also leading the U.S. Junior Open Team to a 646-point victory over the second place squad from the Philippines. Norris was also named the Open Junior Shoot Off winner. Competing on the U.S. Ladies Open Team, Miculek contributed greatly to the 300 point win over the second place Austrians while also capturing the Open Lady Shoot Off title.

“On behalf of Smith & Wesson, we would like to congratulate the members of the U.S. Team and our own Team Smith & Wesson Shooters who served as representatives during this year’s World Shoot,” said Tom Kelly, Vice President of Marketing for Smith & Wesson. “David, B.J. and Kay do an outstanding job as ambassadors to the shooting community and their skills have led them to the podium time and time again. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments as the recently crowned world champions.”

About Smith & Wesson<br
