class="wp-caption-text">COAST Products

Portland, OR --(Ammoland.com)- It may be an over-used metaphor to say a product is on the “cutting edge” of innovation. But the new, Rapid Response blade-assist knives from Coast Products permit the term to apply, both literally and figuratively.

And the knives are just one element of a new line-up of professional LED flashlights, multi-tools and knives that Coast will introduce at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas, this past January 17-20.

Designed by world-renowned custom knife maker Ron Lake, the Rapid Response folders may be the best blade-assist knives ever manufactured. Combine that with patented ease-of-use and safety features – and an amazingly affordable price – and this knife sets new standards that won’t be matched anytime soon.

It starts with the completely re-imagined SAT (Smooth Assist Technology) system that’s unlike anything ever made before. The patented system features a roller-cam built into the blade that the assisting spring rides on. Just give the thumb stud a nudge and the blade snaps to attention, fast and effortlessly.

Rapid Response knives provide a new level of safety too. Coast’s patented Max-Lock system completely secures the blade when it is closed, and double locks the blade when it is open. Built to last a lifetime and covered by the Coast limited lifetime warranty, these knives have fiberglass-filled nylon handles for maximum strength, a perfect hand fit and great looks. Heat-treated, stainless-steel liners make the knives very strong and corrosion resistant, while the open-frame design lowers weight and makes cleaning easy.

Most important, the Rapid Response blade is finely crafted from 400-series stainless steel that’s rigorously tested to ensure top-quality heat treatment, and each blade is tested for sharpness. They have ambidextrous thumb studs and pocket clips that are easily reversed to the other side of the handle or removed.

Rapid Response knives are available in 3-inch and 3.9-inch blade lengths, which close to 4 and 5 inches, respectively. Both blade lengths are available with a full-edge satin/glass-beaded finish, or with a black blade that’s partially serrated. Retail price for the larger knife is expected to be under $50; the smaller one under $40.

And, as exciting as the new Rapid Response knives are, they are just one product in a completely redesigned line of top quality cutting tools that Coast will introduce at the SHOT Show.

Not Just Brighter … Better
Equally impressive as the new Coast knife line is its new line of professional LED flashlights, which themselves received a complete redesign in the last year. When they were finished, Coast had introduced a staggering number of optical advancements that assures their continued market leadership.

That included inventions like patent-pending Pure Beam Focusing, and unique, proprietary innovations like one-hand Fingertip Speed Focus Control, the convenient Beam Lock System and the Cyclone™ Heat Sink System for maximum light and longer LED life.

The definitive examples of all that innovation are the 5.5-inch HP7 that produces 251 lumens of brilliant light with just four AAA batteries, and, making its debut at this year’s SHOT Show, the HP21 lights a city block with 1,317 lumens, a range up to 850 feet and high, low and strobe modes. It’s powered with just four D-cell alkaline batteries.

The New HP21 – 1,317 Lumens
The HP21 is the ultimate high performance LED flashlight, the choice when only the best and brightest flashlight will do. The HP7 is easy to carry, with the light output and runtime that’s needed by those who rely on their light every day. And they’re just two of a complete line of Coast LED lights.

“We’ve been making top quality knives for more than 90 years,” said David Brands, Coast president. “The new knives, including the Rapid Response, are unquestionably the best we’ve ever produced and they’re quite possibly the best on the market today. All our new professional lights, led by the HP21 and the HP7, have improved light output and optical quality, the two most important factors in the performance of flashlights and headlamps.”

Coast Products – A History of Innovation
Well-known for their premium knifes and multi-tools, over the past decade Coast skyrocketed from zero market share to a market leader in premium LED flashlights by developing innovative products trusted by everyone from the weekend warrior to the Navy Seals and soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Coast’s technologically advanced products are safer and easier to use, while at the same time being extremely functional and enjoyable to own.

About Coast – Coast Products was founded as Coast Cutlery Company in 1919. Originally established to provide quality knives to the farmers, ranchers and workers of the Pacific Northwest, today Coast produces premium LED lighting products, including top-rated flashlights, headlamps and EAL (emergency area lighting), as well as fine-crafted knives and world class multi-tools. Every Coast product reflects an investment in skilled craftsmanship and quality materials and is backed by a Coast guarantee. Coast products are available from leading consumer retailers, dealers and home centers including Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, Do it Best, True Value, Amazon.com and others. class="wp-caption-text">AmmoLand Gun News

Las Vegas, NV --(Ammoland.com)- Arriving at SHOT Show 2012 in Las Vegas there are endless firearms, accessories, ammunition and apparel to peruse.

Another big attraction at the show for many including myself, are the knife manufacturers. I was certainly looking forward to seeing the full product lines of many of my favorite knife companies and Spyderco tops my list.

I am continually pleased with the look, feel and performance of every one of their knives I have purchased.

The Spyderco booth was front and center when I entered the show floor and it was my first stop. I am always amazed at how the colors of the knife handles stand out especially in the Endura and Delica lines. There are two new colors this year for the Delica 4 including a vibrant orange and a special blue handle edition, in which a portion of the proceeds benefit the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Spyderco has created several knives to benefit charities. Included in their current line is the Native lightweight in pink – donations based on the sales of this knife support the Y – Me National Breast Cancer Organization.

There are several new products in the lineup this year and they all have the quality Spyderco look and lightweight feel to them, and of course the fantastically sharp cutting edge. The first in my top three picks is the Yojimbo2 designed by Michael Janich, a personal defense trainer. The knife encourages a thumb forward grip and was designed with a martial arts focus in mind. The blade is approximately 3 inches long with an overall length of 7.5 inches and weighs in at 4 oz. It features a straight cutting edge, compression lock and the Spyderco CLIPIT for easy pocket carry. (MSRP $169.95)

The next knife that caught my eye was the “R” Nishijin. It has an attractive, smooth glass fiber handle with a pattern that almost appears to sparkle. The blade length is 3.5 inches with an overall length of 8 inches open and 4.5 inches closed. It weighs in at 4.3 oz and features the Spyderco CLIPIT. The Nishijin is part of a sprint run or limited production for 2012 which means it is not found in the regular product line, so order it while it is still available. (MSRP $219.95)

My favorite of the top new products and the one I ultimately ordered for myself is the Junior. The Junior was designed with a child’s hand and coordination in mind. It was created for Technical Manager, Alexandru Diaconescu’s son when he began asking for his own pocket knife. The idea was to make a folding knife that was safe and easy to use in smaller, less experienced hands. The knife is lightweight at 2.9 oz, with a blade length of 3.21 inches. It features a deep handle guard which allows the hand to have great control of the blade while blocking the fingers from sliding up near the sharp edge. This folding knife comes in black, with a CLIPIT for pocket carry and a compression lock, added for its high level strength and the ability to fit well on the highly contoured handle. It also has the Spyderco Round Hole for single handed opening as well as a lanyard hole. The Junior felt lightweight and very comfortable in my hand and fit well in my small pockets, and it still maintains all the features of a quality Spyderco blade. (MSRP $219.95)

<a

Speaking with Candy was a pleasure, she thoroughly enjoys going to work every day and it shows in her knowledge and animation when talking about the company’s products. She describes Spyderco as a company with a heart and it is refreshing to see the enthusiasm in all the employees working at the booth this week. It’s a family oriented company as well, Candy’s mother has worked at Spyderco for thirty years. Both women started out in quality control and have moved to other positions over time.

Ammoland.com)- First, Happy Holidays from all of us at COAST Products.

This fall, COAST rolled out a complete new line of LED flashlights, including the High Performance HP7 that packs 251 lumens of light into a 5.5-inch aluminum body.

Hundreds of customers and the media immediately saw how advanced the new patented optics from COAST are, and rave reviews were written by many of the toughest reporters in the land. You may have read one of them.

Now, for the SHOT Show in January - at booth 15120 - COAST will be introducing a completely new lineup of precision knives, new multi-tools and even more advanced LED lights. If you’re going to the show, we hope you’ll stop by to take a look.

The new knives will be led by the amazing, triple-patented Rapid Response blade-assist models - designed by world -renowned knife maker Ron Lake. Once you’ve put one of these knives in your hand, you’ll never want anything else there. Patented SAT (Smooth Assist Technology) delivers the fastest, smoothest blade opening possible. Patented Max-Lock and Double-Lock systems offer the safest knife available.

But that’s not all you’ll see from COAST at the SHOT Show. You may not believe that a hand-held LED flashlight can produce over 1300 lumens of the brightest light you’ve ever seen, projecting up to 260 meters (853 feet). But the incredible HP21 High Performance flashlight does that and more – with just three D-cell alkaline batteries! Read more about this advanced light by clicking here.

That’s still not all that’s new. COAST now has perhaps the most advanced line of professional multi-tools you can find anywhere. That includes the outstanding new Model C5899 Pro Pocket Pliers with two built-in LED lights and tools accessible without opening the pliers.

Whether you’re going to the SHOT Show or not, stay tuned. You’ll be receiving complete details about the new COAST Products in early January. But if you are going to the show, make your plans now to visit booth 15120. You won’t be disappointed.

Thank you and very best regards,
Ammoland.com)- The hearing in Boston last Friday on the proposed anti-knife ordinance “Providing For The Licensing Of Stores That Sell Certain Knives” was a TOTAL FARCE!

We’ve coined the term “knife bigots” to describe these councilors, and others, who simply hate our freedom and our tools and staged this farciful hearing as part of their effort to railroad through this ordinance.

The only councilors at the hearing were the ordinance’s sponsors.

To spare you the agony of listening to the entire hour and 49-minute long low-quality video (can be viewed at http://1.usa.gov/sCvC13), we’ve put together an “entertaining” summary video with highlights and some commentary. This should give you some insight into their skewed view of knives and our rights. Click the image below to view the video.

Please pass along this article link or the video to your knife owner friends. This is how they view knives overseas and why we formed Knife Rights to prevent this from happening in America.

This is the Anti’s vision for knife owners in America, if we do not oppose them at every turn.

Todd Rathner, Knife Rights Legislative Director, led off the testimony opposing the ordinance, with supporting testimony from Jim Wallace of Gun Owner’s Action League (GOAL), the NRA’s Massachusetts affiliate, and a statement from American Knife & Tool Institute read by an AKTI representative. You can read Knife Rights’ official submitted testimony at www.KnifeRights.org/Boston_Statement_11-18-2011.pdf . Todd’s actual testimony was somewhat different as he responded to the preceding testimony by the Councilors and their witnesses.

Watch the video above and hear some of their more outrageous comments, such as, “No law is too onerous…when it comes to the sale of these weapons.” At one point, Councilor Michael Ross appears to be encouraging lawsuits against knife manufacturers for the illegal knife sales made by some convenience stores!

The knives that the Boston City Council is hoping to control will still be available outside city limits, over the internet, and at stores not covered by the ordinance as well as many other places. And, let us not forget the ubiquitous availability of kitchen knives in every household. The ordinance will only result in the hindrance of law-abiding citizens and penalizing honest business owners.

Please contact your Councilor IMMEDIATELY and POLITELY express your opposition to this unnecessary and discriminatory proposal: www.cityofboston.gov/citycouncil/councillors or you can call 617-635-4500 and ask for your Councilor. Additionally, you can email Mayor Tom Mennio at mayor@cityofboston.gov or call his office at 617-635-4500.

Additional details on this ordnance at: http://bit.ly/vtymHc

(Thanks to Knife Rights supporter Adam Francis of <a

Small fixed-blade knives have become extremely popular because they eliminate the need to “deploy” the blade in-fight. However, carry of fixed-blade knives is still considered taboo by many or unrealistic based on the operational environment (workplaces or formal dress occasions).

While the small fixed blade is more efficient and dependable, the folding knife can go places the fixed blade cannot.

Ammoland.com)- As we warned, this Thursday, September 8, 2011, the Public Safety Committee of the Boston City Council will be holding a hearing with the intention of licensing the sale of knives in the city of Boston.

Below is the official stated purpose of the hearing:

That the appropriate committee of the Boston City Council hold a hearing to examine requiring the sale of knives to be licensed by the appropriate police agency that would monitor, regulate and license businesses selling knives. Representatives from the Boston Police Department, Inspectional Services Department, and other interested parties shall be invited to attend.

The meeting will be at Boston City Hall, Ianella Chambers, 5th Floor on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 10 am.

If you are a Boston citizen, here is a link to the councilors’ webpages where you can find a link to contact them and POLITELY express your outrage: http://www.cityofboston.gov/citycouncil/councillors

We urge all Boston area Knife Rights members to contact the Boston City Council and express their opposition to this measure. Currently citizens need a license to possess pepper spray. In a year or so this measure could lead to licensing citizens to possess a basic pocket knife.

As noted in the article linked below, existing Boston law already prohibits knives with a blade two inches or longer from being sold to anyone under age 18. A number of stores were fined as a result of a recent sting operation for illegally selling knives to underage persons. There is no indication that there has been any factual connection made between violence committed with knives in the city and these retailers, or that licensing would actually help the situation any more than simply enforcing the existing law on the books.

Knife Rights has a representative in Massachusetts who will be attending this meeting, but if you live in the area and can attend as well, the stronger show of opposition we can generate, the better.

Video: www.bit.ly/p0TUmg
How to Lost Proof Your Child by J Wayne Fears

It has been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If you or someone you know has ever been involved in trying to locate a lost child, you know this statement certainly holds true.

“It is far easier to prepare yourself and your child for a lost-child situation than it is to go through the trauma of having a child missing,” Fears says.

In the guidebook, Fears adapts his great knowledge of wilderness survival to the goal of lost-proofing the child. He divides the book into lost-proofing in suburbia and lost-proofing in the woods. In the section on suburbia, Fears covers possible scenarios such as malls, public events, schools and sporting and church events.

He discusses the reasons children wander off as well as providing strategies that teach safe behavior to children. He then provides a clear and perhaps life-saving procedure to follow if a child is lost. When discussing lost-proofing in the back country, Fears draws upon his wilderness expertise to provide the most thorough approach including strategies, rules each child must learn, practice and follow, proper visible clothing, and the building of a child’s survival kit. Fears’ discusses what to do if your child is missing and how lost children move. The book also provides a thorough discussion on hypothermia.

Pick up your copy today. Lost-Proofing Your Child is a must-have book for anyone who enjoys the great outdoors and wants to share it with a child.

FACTS:

7 out of every 10 children will become lost at some point in their childhood

Fewer than 9% of the parents or gaurdians of children are prepared for a lost-child situation

Over 2000 children get lost in the U.S every day

For more information, check out <a

His latest creation exclusive to the Custom Alliance is the Iron Wave. With this unique bowie, Foster transforms simple materials-carbon and stainless steels along with spalted, stabilized maple into works of practical high art.

Burt’s technique of marrying stainless and carbon steel into a heat-fused, razor-sharp laminate renders an almost indestructible, yet intensely unique and beautiful knife. The rock-hard spalted maple develops it’s characteristic black contrasting highlights over many years and every handle will be uniquely beautiful. Each Iron Wave will have a handmade leather sheath by Mr. Foster. This rare item is limited to 10 pieces.

Burt Foster has a life long passion for the outdoors and its activities which has shown him the importance of having a sharp tool. Burt began making knives full-time in 2001 and a few years later he earned the rating of Master Bladesmith in the American Bladesmith Society.

“My laminated steel blades are unique in that they have a single piece of carbon steel forge welded between two pieces of stainless steel. This is also referred to in Japanese blades as “san-mai” or literally “three layers.” There are basically two main advantages to my laminated steel blades. The first is that at the temperatures used to harden the carbon steel core, the stainless sides remain soft and support the hard center. This makes the knife very sharp at the edge, but very tough overall. The second advantage is that because my laminated steel is made with stainless steel on the outside, the knife blade has the performance of carbon steel and the maintenance of a stainless steel.

The carbon steel core is exposed only near the edge, so 90% of the blade surface remains very stain resistant. The exposed carbon steel will darken with age, but this darkening adds to the look of the knife, and gives you a knife which when used, improves with age instead of the other way around. This composite blade construction is probably the most practical high performance blade you can have.” – Burt Foster

Specifications:

Blade Steel – 420 Stainless with 1095 Core

Blade Length – 8 3/8″

Blade Thickness – .275″

Handle Material – Spalted Maple (Stabilized)

Handle Length – 5″

Overall Length – 13 3/8″

Hardware – Stainless

Weight – 13.6 oz.

Retail – $1195.00

Contact Information:<br

The edge bevel is an extreme, nearly razor edge 70 degrees.

Can be used as both a thrusting and slashing close-in, defensive weapon. The serrated top edge offers a much broader edge radius, and is designed for hard use cutting and hacking, preserving the razor edge of the main blade.

The back taper of the broadening penetrator tip is beveled as not to catch on clothing when withdrawn. Unique handle design incorporates paracord wrapping channels that allow user configuration of overall handle thickness. The tapered and grip-serrated thumb ridge provides a broad reverse grip surface typically unavailable in shorter blade designs.

Broad hilts keep the hand from-over sliding onto the blade should the user hit something hard in a thrusting maneuver. /> CTV2 steel is a proprietary hybrid alloy of Chromium, Cobalt, Tungsten, Vanadium, and many other properties with surgical grade stainless steel. CTV2 offers both strength and edge holding ability. Additional cryogenic hardening enables medical grade edge sharpness while avoiding the brittleness of high Rockwell hardness. About Dark Operations Fighting Knives

Dark Operations Fighting Knives is a privately held company and subsidiary of Dark Ops Holdings. Founded in 2001 by a law enforcement specialist and based in the heartland of the USA, Dark Ops Knives produces knives that are considered by many to be the most effective edged combat weapons in existence today. Dark Ops Knives feature rugged construction designed to perform in the gravest extremes, proprietary CTV2 steel blades that are nearly double the thickness of standard knives, and simple yet tough locking mechanisms that are proven in combat and as strong as the steel itself. Dark Ops Knives have military-tested handle designs that contain ground quartz inserts for maximum grip and leverage, aided by substantial finger grooves that orient the knives to be used in the dark or under physical duress. All knives hold a lifetime warranty.

For more information on the Vendetta and other Dark Ops Knives, visit www.darkopsknives.com. title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- Compact Fixed-Blade Knives for Tactical Operators and Outdoor Enthusiasts Alike

A knife is one of the most personal items an individual can possess. A nonslip handle on a hunting knife tells as much about the hunter as does the well-worn, yet shaving-sharp blade of a bone-clad pocket knife.

There are times, however, when the unseen knife tells the most about an individual. Ontario Knife Company’s Ranger Silver Skeleton and Ranger Neck Knives were designed with the tactical and outdoor enthusiast markets in mind, allowing the user to carry the knives concealed without running afoul of the law.

“In designing the Ranger Neck Knife and Ranger Silver Skeleton, my thought was to build a knife that could be legally carried concealed in most states,” said knife designer Justin Gingrich (please check with all local, state and federal laws). “I wanted a lightweight blade that could be worn close to the body and would be able to handle everyday tasks whether around the house or in the woods.”

The Ontario Knife Ranger Silver Skeleton features 440C stainless steel construction and measures an overall length of 6 5/8 inches with 2 11/16 inches of drop-point-inspired blade — ideal for hunting and tactical applications. The Kydex sheath dangles securely against the body thanks to its paracord tether, but it can also be slid into a pocket or worn on a belt as the user’s situation and preference dictate.

The Ontario Knife Ranger Neck Knife has many of the same great features of the Silver Skeleton, including 440C stainless construction and the stout 5/32-inch-thick blade. Overall, the Ranger Neck Knife tapes 6 15/16 inches with a 2 ¾-inch bird/trout-point design that serves the defined needs of tactical operators and sportsmen alike. As with all Ontario Knife products, the Ranger Neck Knife and Ranger Silver Skeleton are proudly made in the USA and come with a limited lifetime warranty.

Ammoland.com)- The Ontario Knife Company — a leading provider of cutting-edge knives and high-performance American-made cutlery for the U.S. military and Armed Forces since WWI, has upgraded its offerings with the introduction of the Rhoen I, Rhoen II and Keiler IV knives.

These will be displayed at the IWA & Outdoor Classics Show in Nürnberg, Germany (Helmut Hofmann booth: Hall 4, 4-08, 4-10) www.iwa.info/de/default.ashx.

Ontario Knife Company specifically teamed with Helmut Hofmann — long-time international distributor of some of the largest brands in the industry — and former military veteran Justin Gingrich to build these innovative knives.

The Rhoen I measures 8.965 inches overall with 3.75 inches of cutting edge. The canvas Micarta handle provides a sure grip in any weather condition or circumstance, especially when outdoors, where rain, blood, mud and sand can all become impediments to a secure grasp. The Rhoen II is bigger and heavier than its little brother, boasting a full 10.5 inches in length. Both Rhoen models are crafted with 154 CM steel blades, sport a stealthy satin finish and are hardened to an ultra-desirable Rc 53-55 for easy sharpening in the field. The orange-and-green handles are constructed using canvas Micarta and secured with nickel-silver rivets. Setting apart these models from knives of the past are the glow inserts in each handle, making it a snap to locate a misplaced or dropped knife in the dark or when fishing through your pack. The Rhoen II was also designed with a slot in the pommel, ideal for attaching a tether or for use in lashing the knife to another object.

Fans of The Ontario Knife Company’s Afghan model are sure to become quick devotees of the Keiler IV. The Keiler IV tapes out just under 10 inches and uses a nearly identical handle as the Rhoen models, including the glow insert, but it follows a black-and-orange color scheme. The Keiler IV is all business. When it comes to cutting, the Keiler IV offers 4.3 inches of finely sharpened 154CM steel with serrations on the backbone, which allow your thumb a solid purchase during fine cutting or skinning operations.

“These lightweight hunting blades look as good as they are tough,” said Justin Gingrich, designer of the Ontario Knife Ranger series. “Each one is crafted from high-end materials ensuring incredible form and function in the field.”

Rhoen I

Material: 154 CM Rc 53-55

Thickness: .1875

Blade Color: Satin Finish

Full Taper Grind

Nickel-Silver Rivets

Handle: Orange-and-Green

Canvas Micarta

Rhoen II

Material: 154 CM Rc 53-55

Thickness: .1875

Blade Color: Satin Finish

Full Taper Grind

Nickel-Silver Rivets

Handle: Orange-and-Green

Canvas Micarta

Keiler IV

Material: 154 CM Rc 53-55

Thickness: .1875

Blade Color: Satin Finish

Full Taper Grind

Nickel-Silver Rivets

Handle: Black-and-Green

Canvas Micarta

The Rhoen I, Rhoen II and Keiler IV are sold exclusively through Helmut Hofmann — an international distribution company with 50 plus years serving brands in the hunting & shooting, police, armed forces and security markets (http://www.helmuthofmann.de/english/lager.php).

Founded in 1889, The Ontario Knife Company is a U.S.-owned and -operated organization that continually stays in the forefront of knife design and cutting-edge technology. SOG Introduces New Specialty Knives & Tools
SOG Knives
Lynnwood, Washington --(Ammoland.com)- Happy New Year, and we at SOG Specialty Knives and Tools couldn’t be more excited for what’s in store for 2011.
New and upcoming SOG (www.sogknives.com) products in 2011 include the four tools in the Contractor series, designed specifically for industrial tradesmen; the Nautical precision multi-tool geared towards underwater digging, prying and scraping; the nearly foot-long Force, recommended for extreme, long-duration operation; and SOG Ops, a retooling of the Seal Pup knife that aims to be the optimum knife for armed forces around the world.
Full descriptions of several new SOG products can be found below, and our entire current product line as well as the full 2011 SOG catalog can be found at www.tiny.cc/sog and all of our new products can be found at www.sogknives.com/store/new.html.
Some may not be available for a few months.
Force:
The first thing that is obvious about the Force is how stout it is. The thick blade and minimal grind profiles maximize the strength of the blade. This is a beast of a knife and will be virtually unbreakable. The full tang runs out the back of the glass-reinforced handle and into a glass breaking point. The handle is perfectly contoured and covered in aggressive checkering that is not for the faint handed. The Force is recommended for extreme, long duration operations.
SOG Ops:
An evolution of the proven and world carried SEAL Pup, the Ops features a recurved edge that has a longer cutting length, a drop point tip which increases strength, large thumb scallops for additional control, and perfect balance for instinctive movement. Combined with a choice of our nylon MOLLE or Kydex like tactical sheaths, you have what we think is the optimum knife for armed forces through out the world. Get on top with the SOG Ops.
Nautical:
The Nautical is not just a knife it’s a precision instrument with many parts working together in synchronicity. A marlin-spike is especially useful in marine applications to untie knots but we were surprised to find out how many other uses they have. Use it as an awl, a scribe, for digging, prying, scraping, or … you get the idea. What you might not see at first glance though is that the liners are crafted from super strong and lightweight titanium and mated to tough G10 handles. The big half serrated blade opens and closes as fast as you can say “red on right return.”
Contractor Series:
A craftsman is only as good as his tools. For almost 25 years, SOG has been a leading supplier of knives and tools to the industrial, contractor, and DIY markets. The reason is simply that our products are some of the toughest and we stand behind them with lifetime guarantees. The Contractor series is designed specifically for tradesmen, including electricians, handymen, and for those who take pride in a job well done. Modernizing traditional patterns, these four knives feature: multi bladed lockback, patent pending holes/notches for stripping wire, aggressive G10 [...]

SOG Introduces New Specialty Knives & Tools

American Knife & Tool Institute

LAS VEGAS, NV --(Ammoland.com)- Learn what knife industry leaders, members of the knife advocacy organization, the American Knife and Tool Institute (AKTI), agree are standard knife definitions to use for legislation and law enforcement purposes in the “AKTI Approved Knife Definitions” document available at www.AKTI.org.

Knife owners, lawmakers and law enforcers will read about the background of knife terms in common and legal use, various states that prohibit specific types of knives, and the standard definitions the AKTI is encouraging be used for interpreting and enforcing knife laws.

“AKTI members believe that knives are inanimate objects, regardless of various differences such as length of blade, shape or style, the mechanism for opening, or the name used,” said AKTI President Goldie Russell, A. G. Russell Knives. “As the reasonable voice of the knife community, we have worked to change restrictive and vague knife laws to protect all knife owners.”

Originally adopted in 2005, the “AKTI Approved Knife Definitions” was revised to reflect clarifications to knife definition language that AKTI successfully used in law changes in Texas and the 2009 amendment to the 1958 Federal Switchblade Act. Clarification of the terminology “bias toward closure” and states where certain knives are prohibited were included to make the publication even more informative.

The “AKTI Approved Knife Definitions” has been distributed to lawmakers, police officers, attorneys and judges who recognize the credibility of the industry’s organization and its efforts to promote consistency and clarity. The details and diagrams have been very informative in discussions with legislators.

“We want to build on the work we’ve done and the reputation we have as the organization for those who work with or benefit from knives, and to support those who have questions about legal knife usage,” Russell said. “We encourage everyone to share the document with their legislators and local law enforcement.”

Knife users who wish to support the work of AKTI will find it convenient to become a member or make contributions with online payment options. All knife owners willing to help contact legislators or who want to stay informed about knife issues are encouraged to sign up as Grassroots Supporters of the knife advocacy work that AKTI does; emails detailing the latest legislative and legal issues and updates are free to those who enroll.

The American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI) is a non-profit organization (501(c)6) representing all segments of the knife industry and all knife users. Formed by concerned industry leaders after considerable discussion with individual knifemakers, knife magazine publishers, and a broad section of the knife community, AKTI has been the reasonable and responsible voice of the knife community since 1998. title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- Benchmade Knife Company is proud to announce new partnerships with three custom designers: Butch Ball, Paul W. Poehlmann, and Bill Harsey, Jr. Their world-class custom designs and innovative ideas will allow Benchmade to discover the newest locking mechanisms, modern materials, and custom finishing techniques.

Butch Ball grew up with a fascination of knives and began building his own knives in a machine shop in Florida. In 2001, he built his own shop in Virginia, where he currently resides.

The first Benchmade-Ball collaboration knife will be the new Harley-Davidson 13450 T-Rod. This knife is a push button, two-position knife that can be either a fixed blade or a dagger. Featuring a modified clip point 440C stainless steel blade and aluminum handles, this knife also includes a black leather sheath. MSRP $120.

Paul W. Poehlmann is a skilled custom knife maker and designer of mechanical solutions. He draws on an engineering career in the aeronautical industry where he designed escape system hardware and survival equipment. Poehlmann’s passion for precision has resulted in some of the smoothest and safest folding knives ever made. He invented the Paul axial locking mechanism and holds over forty utility patents and two design patents.

The new Axial series of knives will be released within the Benchmade product line. These knives all feature the Paul locking mechanism and are available in a variety of sizes and handle materials, including G10, Carbon Fiber, Cocobolo and Ivory Micarta.

Finally, Oregonian Bill Harsey Jr. is an award-winning knife maker and designer. Known for his unique ergonomic designs, he has crafted many one-of-a-kind folding and fixed blade knives that have become the preferred edged tools of several Special Forces units.

The 3800 NTK is the new Benchmade-Harsey collaboration featuring a double action locking liner automatic mechanism, D2 tool blade steel and Nylon handle with textured Kraton.

“I am excited to add three very talented custom designers to the Benchmade team,” says Les de Asis, Founder and CEO of Benchmade Knife Company. “These additions will help Benchmade continue to create the most innovative and functional designs in the industry.”

All of these new knives will be officially released in January at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas, NV.
Tags: New York, NY 10018

Dear Editor:

Thank you for focusing attention on the overreaching of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr., and his assault on knife-owners (“Pushing a Right to Bear Arms, The Sharp Kind,” The New York Times, Sunday, December 5, Page 1).

The accompanying photo, of knives seized by Vance’s office, shows how badly he is misreading New York law.

While pointy edges can be intimidating, not one of the knives depicted are illegal in New York, which forbids only switchblades, gravity knives and stilettos. Each of the knives in the photo is a perfectly legal “one-hand opening” knife — as are 80 percent of the pocketknives sold in the U.S.

Besides being legal in New York, Congress last year specifically exempted them from the provisions of the Ammoland.com)- A Washington state representative has introduced a bill amending Washington law to outlaw concealed carry of knives with blades longer than 3 1/2 inches.

While Arizona, New Hampshire and other states are making progress in the personal choices law abiding citizens make regarding the type of knives they carry, Rep. Sherry Appleton (D – LD23) is looking to set her state’s knife laws back decades.

Rep. Appleton bill would mean that the average fisherman, fishing one of Washington’s many coastal areas or rivers whose jacket falls over their 6-inch filet knife would suddenly be committing a crime. Washington has many hunters and is a popular hunting destination for those who travel to hunt.

The average hunting knife is considerably longer than the arbitrary 3 1/2- inch limit, exposing hunters to committing an unintentional crime as well. But, the most egregious aspect of this proposed law will be to render illegal many simple pocket knives that law-abiding citizens carry everyday for work and recreation.

“Why anyone would go back to this 1950’s legislative mentality is beyond me,” said Doug Ritter, Chairman of Knife Rights.

“While many states are modernizing or eliminating restrictive laws coving the essential tools millions of Americans carry for everyday chores, we now have a legislator in Washington State who thinks it’s a good idea to go backwards.”

Read the proposed bill: http://bit.ly/fCACxE

Now is not the time to roll back the clock; now it the time to move forward and enhance our knife rights.

Knife Rights is already hard at work laying the groundwork to fight this ridiculous proposal, but we can’t do it without your help.

Please contribute to the Second Front Legislative Campaign so we stop this bill in its tracks: http://bit.ly/foA0QA

About:
Modern Defensive Training Systems

Utica, NY --(Ammoland.com)- Tactical folding knife (TFK) selection for personal protection requires as much thought as choosing a handgun for every day carry (EDC).

In my experience most people just go to a local sporting goods store and pick whatever knife looks cool. This is unfortunate because a TFK or small fixed blade (SFB) can be carried more readily in non-permissive environments than most CCW pistols.

Selection of a TFK for personal protection or on-duty carry should not be a random process and several elements should be taken into consideration.

The folder you choose for personal protection needs to possess a few basic attributes:

1) Strong Lock/Hold Open Mechanism- It is imperative that whatever folder you choose, that it stay open during interpersonal defensive use. You may be thrusting the blade into hard surfaces such as bone which could cause a weak lock to collapse. Various locking mechanisms are available to include traditional lock backs, liner locks, rolling locks, lock-pins, mono-lock and the axis lock. Most commercial grade “Tactical Folding Knives” feature one of these type locks and they are all suitable on a personal protection folder. One caution; carefully test out any lock-back knife if considering it for ElocksDC for personal defense. Depending upon where the lock mechanism is placed along the spine of the folder, one of your fingers could depress the lock causing it to close when gripping the knife tightly such as during a critical life or death situation under extreme stress.

2) Fit in Hand when Closed- Preferably with some impact surface available at the top and bottom. You may have to access the folder while under attack when accessing of the folder is possible but not deployment of the blade. The exposed portion of the folding knife (out the top and bottom of the hand when gripped) can provide an effective impact tool until the blade can be deployed.

3) Tip Up Carry- Look for a folder that allows tip UP carry when in the pocket. This carry method eliminates having to rotate the folder into the hand when drawing from your carry position. Tip down carry requires rotation of the knife in the hand prior to deploying the blade. Under the stresses of a close range confrontation this adds another fine motor skill to the accessing process. This is largely user preference. Dedicated, consistent practice will allow some to access the knife from tip down carry rapidly. Just be aware that possession does not equal proficiency.

4) Robust Opening Mechanism- Research the different opening mechanisms such as the stud, hole, disc, auto opening, wave, assisted opening etc… Some guys (who can own them) love the auto opening knives but remember that under stress you may hit that button and open that knife when you may not want it opened. Waved knives like everything have pros and cons and do require proper training in indexing and deploying the blade.

I recommend the stud mechanism or hole like on a Spyderco or Benchmade TFK. These mechanisms are simple to deploy and will not open without me. Assisted opening knives often compromise the grip on the knife in order to actuate the assist mechanism which could lead to major problems during standing grapple and in-fight weapon access.

5) One Hand Opening- The folder you choose must allow you to open it one handed. During a critical incident your primary or support hand may be tied up fending or striking your opponent. You need to be able to access and deploy your TFK with one hand (either hand) and under the pressure and stress of an attack.

6) Non-Slip Surface -The grip or handle scales should be a non-slip texture such as a checked or stippled surface made of G10, zytel osurfacer ABS plastic. Hands may become covered in sweat or blood making anything you grasp slippery and difficult to retain. No stainless steel or polished wood scales for a personal protection knife if you intend to possibly defend your life with it.

7) Blade Design- Different blade designs offer different advantages. For me, it is more “methodology” driven. If you have trained or follow a school of thought that teaches slashing as a primary defense then a curved or drop point blade may be for you. If you follow a more point driven methodology then a needle-point or tanto type blade design known for penetration is more applicable.

Blade Length- Laws can vary greatly depending upon what state, city or county you reside in depending upon who you speak with. For example, NYS law says nothing about blade length. However I have spoken to numerous Law Enforcement Officers and district attorneys from different counties that say four inches is the legal limit. It has also been stated to me that blade length is measured from where the sharpened blade starts or what is referred to as the choil or on a fixed blade where the ricasso ends; essentially the edge or sharpened surface of the blade. Another individual told me blade length is measured from where the “metal starts coming out of the handle” to include the choil and ricasso. What this means is that you could have a 4″ length sharpened edge according to knife manufacturer specifications (which is what manufacturers go by) but when you add the unsharpened choil and ricasso you have 4.25-4.50″ of blade. This may or may not make that knife illegal in your jurisdiction. Because of this obvious lack of clarity or uniformity I recommend folders that are spec’d out at 2.0-3.5 inches for every day carry.

9) Pocket Clip- Finally, when selecting a tactical folding knife careful attention should be paid to the method in which you intend to carry. The most common method found on TFK’s today is the pocket clip. With this clip the TFK can be clipped inside a pant pocket, waistband, shirt lapel or a myriad of other locations. Look for a strong metal clip which can be attached to either side of the knife for left or right hand carry. Some folding knives such as older Cold Steel models first came with plastic clips which were prone to breakage. Choose a knife with a clip that is dark in color, the idea is to remain low profile when carrying any personal protection tool. Some TFK’s come with a bright silver clip which draws attention and/or reflects light. A dark clip will blend in with clothing and not stand out.

Selecting a folding knife for personal protection is a highly individual process. Go to a good cutlery store and handle several knives prior to purchasing. Similar to handguns, a knife that fits my hand and is comfortable for me to carry may not suit your personal likes and needs. Now that you have some information on how to select a folding knife for personal protection a future article will address the next phase of preparation – Efficient carry locations for the personal protection folding knife.

Modern Defensive Training Systems

Utica, NY --(Ammoland.com)- Considering how many companies will not ship folding knives anymore to NYS due to the New York City confiscation of folding knives from several retail stores and heavy fines levied against retailers I am more supportive than ever about carrying a small fixed blade knife (SFB).

There are several excellent small fixed blade knives available on the market with blade profiles less than 3 inches.

Most of these small knives have historically been considered “neck knives” or even back up knives however over the last 5 years these type of knives have seen a reintroduction as primary carry tools for every day utility and personal protection.

Based on training and extensive pressure testing, small fixed blade knives set up for centerline (close to the belt buckle) carry are consistently faster and easier to access and deploy than any folding knife that I have come across. The main reason is the simple the fact that with any folding knife the fine motor skills of indexing some type of opening mechanism and then deploying said mechanism takes time and focus.

Neither of these factors is usually available to us during a life threatening attack or incident.

Detractors of small fixed blade knife carry argue that such knives scream “intent” and may save you during a critical life or death incident yet harm you greatly during the legal aftermath. This may very well be the case, however it is my humble opinion that a sub 3 inch fixed blade knife is less ominous looking than a 4 inch “tactical folder”. If you can justify using a folding knife to protect yourself you probably have as good a chance justifying using a small fixed blade. This is of course, just my opinion and is not legal advice.

When it comes to the legal carry of any personal protection tool, the obligation falls on you to follow these guidelines:

Check all local and state laws to verify that carry of a small fixed blade is in fact legal in your jurisdiction.

Make sure you can articulate and justify carry of such tool. Carrying a handgun “Because it’s my right!” won’t and doesn’t fly anymore so if you can justify carry of your handgun you can probably justify and articulate reasons for carrying a folding or even a small fixed blade knife.

For the last few weeks I have been testing out a new small fixed blade for every day carry (EDC). The Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) Folts Minimalist. Originally designed for CRKT as a neck knife I modified the carry method with a small blade-tech tek-lok for belt carry (1.5 inch belt). The total price for both knife and tek-lok is a little over $30, very affordable. The wharncliffe blade design is 2 inches in length, hilt length of ~2.5 inches with the added paracord providing extra purchase when accessing/drawing.

This small fixed blade is enough to provide a distinct advantage as a last ditch personal protection tool yet mimimalist enough to not draw attention, a decent combination of attriubutes.

<a
