2012 GUNS Magazine Combat Special Edition

Mossberg MMR Tactical Rifle

United States --(Ammoland.com)- There has been somewhat of a shift recently by a few of the major firearms manufacturers with regard to ARs.

We are now starting to see ARs with MSRPs that are considerably lower than ever before.

It seems that the industry is quietly moving towards producing more affordable or entry level ARs. These are guns with MSRPs in the $700 – $800 range and a real world retail price in the $500 – $700 range. These guns are being brought to the market place in an effort to focus on a consumer who would never be anything more then a casual AR owner…

Its a gun for the hobbyist and at a hobbyist price.

These guns are not your standard Mil-Spec rifles. Many of these models are lacking standard features that can run up manufacturing costs. Features like the dust cover, forward assist, shell deflector, chrome lined barrel, carry handle/rear sight/front sight, and they often have light contour barrels. For the casual gun owner that just wants something to pull out of the closet a couple of times a year to go punch holes in paper, this might be an excellent way to get into the AR game. There are at least half a dozen models on the market right now from DPMS, Smith & Wesson, Bushmaster, and now Mossberg that all fall into this category. With a little searching, I have found these online for as little as $575 and some have even been seen in big box retailers being sold on promo for as low as $500.

So what’s my opinion on this new class of ARs?

Well, I honestly think that this is a great thing. I really like the idea of an entry level AR that comes at a much lower price point. While cutting corners to reduce manufacturing costs doesn’t sound too good on the surface to most gun buyers, we have yet to really see it result in inferior guns or major performance problems. These guns run, and despite the lack of some familiar features that can be found on Mil-Spec ARs many of these budget models get good overall reviews from those who have run them extensively.

So why is a cheaper AR good?
Well, first and foremost it makes AR ownership more appealing to the casual and/or new gun owner. A gun owner who is only going to go to the shooting range maybe once a year is not going to even consider plunking down $1,000 for some play thing that they might rarely use. Change that price tag to $600 and now you have their attention. Now they are starting to think about getting into the game. With a $500 price tag, you might just see them impulse buy one of these rifles on a whim… or maybe just because all of their shooting buddies have one.

This is great for our culture (read country). More guns in the hands of more Americans means more people on our side of the political debate. This would result in more people having a stake in the “evil assault rifle” and “high capacity 30 round clips” debates. It will also just bring more gun owners into the fold. Lowering the cost to play always, repeat always, results in increasing the number of players. Even if these guns just sit in the back of closets, it shifts the overall culture of this country. The other big possibility is that this might get the casual gun owner out shooting more. It might convert more casual owners into enthusiasts… and in turn might just shift us back to once again being a nation of riflemen.

Another reason I like seeing this push towards affordable ARs is because its good for us hardcore gun nuts. Why is a budget AR good for the most serious of us gun owners… someone who may already own one or more ARs? Because it lets you buy an AR for between $500 – $700, that’s why. Are you someone who has been looking for a decent truck gun or a gun to keep on your boat or at your cabin? How about an extra 5.56 upper or just an extra complete AR to have “just in case”? Well, I’m thinking most of us who meet that criteria would jump at the chance to buy a $500 AR. Not to mention what these guns are gonna go for once they start showing up on the shelves of gun shops as used guns. It gets me excited just to think about it.

Finally, this is going to be very good for the gun and ammo industry… both in the short term and in the long term. In the short term this will produce instant revenue streams and even more profit. Make no mistake about it, these guns are going to sell very well. In the long term this new class of ARs will potentially increase their target market (number of gun owners).

The more people that are brought into the fold, the bigger the industry numbers get, and the more people there will be that the gun and ammo manufacturers have to potentially buy their products. This will have a significant impact on the long term success of individual companies as well as the industry as a whole.

This could very well be the biggest game changer with regard to long guns that we have seen in a very long time. I like that.

The clean profile 20-inch barrel is optimized with a 1:9 twist rate and features a recessed hunting crown. The machined aluminum receiver has an integral Picatinny rail for ease of adding optics with Weaver-style rings. A five-round magazine is included; however, the MMR Hunter accepts most higher-capacity AR-15 style magazines.

MMR Tactical – Designed to support both sport shooting and tactical applications, the MMR will meet your needs. Chambered in 5.56mm NATO (.223 Rem) the Tactical versions come with a durable black phosphate/anodized finish and feature a 16.25 inch free-floating barrel with removable A2-style muzzlebrake; aluminum Picatinny quad-rail forend with vents for maximum cooling; receiver-mounted integral Picatinny rail; and standard dust cover. Performance and accuracy are key to long-range shooting and the MVP Series Varmint rifle, as with all 4×4 bolt-actions, comes standard with Mossberg’s Lightning Bolt-Action™ (LBA™) Adjustable Trigger System. Built with durability and reliability in mind, the LBA trigger assembly is machined from aircraft-grade aluminum and hard-coat anodized to military spec, preventing corrosion and minimizing wear. The trigger blade blocks the sear from releasing the striker unless the blade is fully depressed, even at the lightest adjustment setting. And with a simple twist of a standard screwdriver, the LBA trigger is adjustable from 2 to 7 lbs, providing the shooter with the flexibility of adjusting the trigger pull without taking the rifle to a gunsmith. With its distinctive, skeletonized “lightning bolt” trigger blade, the LBA Trigger System offers a truly crisp, creep-free trigger, optimizing accuracy and shot-to-shot consistency.

Yes, it is a big year for Mossberg as we embark on a more customer and consumer based strategy. We have introduced a new ad campaign focused on “Field Proven Performance”. This campaign spans print, TV, web and radio mediums. We also have a new focus on editorial coverage for Mossberg in all those mediums. On the retail front, Mossberg has introduced a major initiative called the Mossberg Triple Crown Dealer Program. This program has a stocking dealer element, Point-of-Sale materials, dealer and distributor sales associate incentives and special dealer VIP pricing. Mossberg has also added professional shooters Jerry Miculek and Patrick Flanigan. Lastly, and certainly not least, as of the NRA Show in May, Mossberg will have announced 19 new products this year. As we all know, new products are the life blood of the firearm industry so those introductions are critical to go with the new pull marketing programs. All of these products, initiatives and more are part of fulfilling a commitment to customers to create more pull marketing.

InSight: How competitive do you feel the current market is compared to 5 years ago and how has it affected your business?
The market is significantly more competitive than it was 5 years ago. Consumers are looking for quality, value and solutions.

The mass of the consumer base is becoming more educated on what products fill those requirements. Therefore it is critical that manufacturers meet those demands in order to be successful. It affects Mossberg’s business significantly because we feel that we meet those demands with quality solutions at affordable prices. Our business is healthy for that reason.

InSight: How long has your company been a member of NASGW and how has it helped your business?
Mossberg has been a member of NASGW for 30+ years. We feel that distribution is the key to our business and we spend the majority of our time focused on distributors. This is evident in the development of selling tools like the new Mossberg Triple Crown Dealer Program. This initiative was widely embraced during the show season and outperformed our expectations. Also, we feel that the time investment at the NASGW Show and in preparation is possibly the most important part of our year. We view this event as our time to share our new programs and products and reach joint commitment for the upcoming year.

While other sales outlets are important, unlike most industries today, the local dealer is still a critical part of the outdoor industry. We feel that the significant role distribution plays with the retailer justifies our focus.

InSight: How does your company stay viable and thrive during this period of constant change?
We believe that the vitality of the outdoor industry begins and ends with new products. While all the other areas mentioned such as customer focus, aggressive programs and good pull marketing are critical, everyone is capable of such strengths. At the end of the day, successful companies will be the ones that have dynamic new products to go with solid business practices.

InSight: What do you believe to be the biggest challenges facing manufacturers in the sporting goods industry?
We believe that we face two major challenges today. The decline of potential hunters and sport shooters is something we must all be aware of and address to the best of our ability. Even with the growth of firearm sales for self defense, it is critical that we find ways to help with the growth of shooting sports. The other area we must stay focused on is legislative issues. Obviously, protection of the Second Amendment and the public’s right to those freedoms is of critical importance to our industry.

InSight: Do you feel that your communication with your wholesaler partners has improved or declined in recent years. If so, how?
At Mossberg, we hope that communication has increased dramatically in the last year. We have increased staff and focus in this area.

We made a commitment to not only be more responsive but also to be proactive in seeking opportunities with distribution. Lastly, we hold a firm belief that we should always strive to be easy to do business with.

In Sight: How can we (NASGW) improve the relationship with all of our members?
At Mossberg, we value the NASGW and appreciate the role played in coordination with distribution.

InSight: What’s new at Mossberg in the way of new, improved or innovative products?
As previously mentioned, Mossberg will introduce 19 new products during the first half of 2011 with more on the way. Some of these are line extensions and others are truly new and innovative products. It continues to be our commitment to stay focused on innovation, quality and value. GunReports.com - -(AmmoLand.com)- In their commercial form, the Persuaders are virtual duplicates of the Mossberg military 500 and 590 models. Persuader shotguns are available in both 18.5-inch and 20-inch barrel lengths, traditional blued or non-glare matte finishes, and some come with Ghost Ring sights. Available in .410 bore, 20- and 12-gauge models, Mossberg Special Purpose shotguns feature an anti-jam elevator, dual extractors, black synthetic stocks, and drilled and tapped receivers (20 and 12 gauge only) for scope base and optics installation. The Persuader/Cruiser models come with standard stocks, but also include a Cruiser-style pistol grip kit, which we didn’t use in our testing.

The Mossberg Persuader 20 gauge in this test had a fixed Cylinder choke blued-steel barrel, single front-bead sight, and 5+1 capacity. As we noted above, in the September 2005 issue we tested the Mossberg Persuader Model 590A1 12 Gauge Magnum No. 51411, and we’ve also checked out a similar 5+1 12-gauge 500A Persuader No. 50411 in the January 2001 issue. The major differences between the 20 and the 12s are the heavy barrel and matte-black Parkerized finish on the No. 51411 tested in 2005.

The 20-gauge 6-shot No. 50452 measured 38 inches in overall length. The receiver was aluminum. The stock and forearm were black pebbled polymer, and the buttstock had an LOP of 14 inches, a drop at comb of 1.7 inches, and a drop at heel of 2.5 inches. There was no cast. The gun had no rib, and the front sight was a simple gold bead. A plus was Mossberg’s 10-year warranty.

Operating the Mossberg, we could work both the safety and the slide release without changing the shooting-hand grip and without having to dismount the shotgun. To rack the slide, we pulled the trigger finger off the trigger and depressed the action-lock lever with the middle knuckle of the right hand. Lefties had it even easier; they could pull the trigger finger off the trigger and release the button without having to shift the hand on the grip. The Mossberg tang safety was likewise

The Persuader/Cruiser models come with standard stocks, but also include a cruiser-style pistol grip kit. The Persuader had more stock pitch than the Express and had a ventilated recoil pad, both of which helped reduce recoil.

The stocks are similar in that they are composite plastic with the same basic measurements, but there are differences. The pistol grip on the Mossberg is about an inch shorter than the Remington.

We preferred the longer grip area of the Express; mainly because it allowed the shooter to have a flatter reach to the trigger, rather than having to cock the hand down to reach the trigger. However, the Mossberg came with a pistol grip, which gave it flexibility the other gun couldn’t match. With the pistol grip on, the Mossberg measured only 29 inches in length and weighed less than 5 pounds.

We thought the pebbled finish on the pistol grip and forend didn’t provide as good a grip surface as the Remington’s checkering. When we tried to shoot the Mossberg fast, our sweaty hands would either slide off the forend or loosen on the buttstock grip. The Mossberg, however, had a noticeably better buttpad than the Express, in our view. Its ventilated design was much softer, and the edges were already rounded. The Mossberg’s front sight was rudimentary, but effective, and we could see the gold bead on the Persuader better than the gray bead on the Express. Also, the Mossberg’s receiver was drilled and tapped for optics. This was a nice touch the other gun lacked.

Elsewhere, though we judged the large opening in the receiver to allow for easy loading and unloading, sometimes the nose of a shell caught on the feeder bar, causing a jam. And while we were handling the gun dry, we noticed that the forearm felt loose, and pressure on the forearm caused the action to stick. But while we were shooting live rounds fast, neither was a problem.
