title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- Putting up a modest reward to recover a stolen 18th century cannon might seem like a shot in the dark, but it worked for Monroe resident Matthew Switlik.

Mr. Switlik’s bronze Spanish-made cannon was swiped Nov. 2 during a nighttime burglary at a Romulus plastics-molding factory, where it was being used as a model for a plastic donations receptacle being created for the new River Raisin National Battlefield Park.

He figured he never again would see the stolen historic artifact, which is estimated to be worth at least $12,000. Nonetheless, he put up a $1,000 reward for its return.

He recovered it this week.

“I got call from a police officer in Detroit in a narcotics unit, and he had my cannon,” Mr. Switlik said. “He credited a concerned citizen who had suspected where it was and took a couple of weeks to locate it.”

The cannon was turned over to Mr. Switlik in the parking lot of the Detroit Police Department’s 10th Precinct station on Livernois, and he paid the reward. He’s not sure of any more details of its recovery.

“I really don’t know any more than that,” he said. “Those folks work in the shadows, and that’s all I know, but I think the reward had something to do with it.”

Although the theft had been widely publicized, the only contact Mr. Switlik received as a result was from a man who claimed psychic abilities and suggested that the cannon was in a building at a construction site in the Romulus area. But that did not pan out.

“I know the Romulus police worked on it and had a feeling there was a ring of metal thieves doing this regularly. They were working on it from that angle, and that could have been the case,” said Mr. Switlik, a retired director of the Monroe County Historical Museum.

The recovered cannon, one of a pair Mr. Switlik owns, is none the worse for wear.

“There’s no damage to it at all,” he said.

Understandably, he is feeling lucky.

“I’ve got to go out and buy lottery tickets this week,” he said. “I also got a call from my daughter who had a cat missing for a month, and they found it this morning, so the family’s having a good roll.”

Mr. Switlik has owned the cannon since 1974. The 42-inch-long gun was cast in Seville in 1795, and the crest of the Spanish king is engraved on the top.

The molding process will resume at the plastics company, but Mr. Switlik will be present during the process.

“It will not leave my possession,” he said.

Tags: Ammoland.com)- The CVA ACCURA V2, the latest version of CVA’s premier muzzleloading only rifle, has all the features of the original, plus a few extra.

All of the elements that made the original ACCURA famous are featured in the ACCURA V2, such as the Trigger Guard Actuated Breeching Action, Bergara Barrel and Neutral Center of Gravity Trigger.

Several more features have been added that put the ACCURA V2 in a class by itself. First, the popular Thumbhole and Standard design stocks remain the same in terms of shape and fit, but a Soft-Touch coating and Rubber Grip Panels have been added to make them extremely comfortable and easy to hang on to even in the wettest weather. Both stock designs are offered in Black and Realtree APG camo.

And last, but certainly not least, the new ACCURA V2 features CVA’s patent pending Quick Release Breech Plug (QRBP) – the first truly finger removable breech plug system. According to the Company’s internal tests, the QRBP allows the user to shoot multiple shots and still remove the breech plug with no tools whatsoever.

As the name implies, accuracy is the big story with the ACCURA V2, a trait owed to its custom quality, 416 Stainless-Steel, Bergara Barrels — which CVA claims are the most accurate production muzzleloader barrels in the world. So accurate, in fact, that CVA guarantees them with a money back guarantee. Visit: Ammoland.com)- Traditions Performance Firearms, known for their extreme accurate and dependable muzzleloaders, is the honored recipient of the 2011 Field and Stream “Best of the Best” product in the muzzleloader category.

This prestigious annual awards program is designed to find and recognize the best new and innovative products in the hunting industry each year. The announcement was made in the September 2011 issue of Field & Stream.

Tom Hall, President of Traditions Performance Firearms comments “We are extremely honored to receive this award for the second year in a row from such a high-standing and well-known publication like Field & Stream. We realize that the testers for the Best of the Best have many choices and test many guns during this process so it makes us feel even more honored that our gun outperforms our competition and passes the rigorous tests the guns are put through.

I think that this speaks to the quality of our guns and what our consumers can expect from Traditions. Our team works extremely hard to create new, innovative muzzleloaders and we could not be more proud of what we have put forth with the Pursuit Ultralight.”

To determine a winner, the guns were put through rigorous testing and were inspected for overall fit and finish and trigger pull weights. The barreled actions were also removed and inspected with a borescope. The test included three shots at 100 yards with three different kinds of ammo as well as being shot from a bench rest.

The Pursuit Ultralight was designed based off of the extremely popular Pursuit series and the 2010 Best of the Best selection, the Vortek Ultralight. The 26” chromoly steel ultralight barrel provides superior strength and accuracy while reducing the gun’s weight. Earning the title “Lightest Muzzleloader in the World” by weighing in at only 5.15 pounds, the Pursuit Ultralight is built to travel and easy to carry on long hunts.

The Premium CeraKote Finish offers unparalleled protection against highly corrosive black powder, cleaning chemicals, and any kind of weather. Other features that make up this revolutionary gun are the Accelerator Breech Plug, Dual Safety System, and Speed Load System.

The Pursuit Ultralight was created to maximize accuracy beyond 200 yards.

Field and Stream tester Brad Fenson says in the Field and Stream article “The rifle tested had a crisp, factory-set trigger with a pull of 3 ¼ pounds and a 26-inch fluted barrel. Its groups would rival those of many higher-priced centerfire rifles.”

Other comments included:

“The breech plug can be removed in seconds without a tool, making the rifle easy to maintain”

“Loading was a breeze and the bullets could be seated with little effort.”

“The 5.15-pound Ultralight handles well and is easy to shoot, even with 150-grain magnum loads.”

To read the complete article about the Pursuit Ultralight, pick up a copy of the September 2011 issue of Field and Stream

For more information on Traditions Performance Firearms complete line of products, please visit their website at <a

Weighing in at a mere 5.15 lbs, the new Pursuit Ultralight has a Chromoly steel barrel which has long been recognized as the best barrel material for strength and accuracy among centerfires.

Despite a lighter gun, none of the great features you have come to expect with Traditions have been sacrificed. The Pursuit Ultralight is Traditions’ mid-level, break action gun for hunters and shooters who are looking for a full-featured gun at a fraction of the cost. The 26” barrel comes with Premium CeraKote Finish which provides a high-quality, long lasting coating that can handle anything Mother Nature can dish out. The Pursuit Ultralight also comes equipped with the Speed Load System for easier bullet loading and more consistent groups, Williams fiber optic sights, and the Accelerator Breech Plug.

The Pursuit Ultralight has a Dual Safety System which allows for two safeties: a trigger block safety built into the trigger guard and a secondary internal hammer block safety, which stops the hammer from engaging the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled. The Pursuit Ultralight MSRP ranges from $295 to $435 depending on the model. Traditions has added many of the features requested by hunters and shooters and created a gun that is impressive in its own right. title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- Thompson/Center Arms Company, Inc., a Smith & Wesson company, announced today that it has expanded one of its most popular lines of muzzleloaders with the introduction of a fixed-barrel version – the Pro Hunter FX.

Designed around the popular Pro Hunter platform, the new muzzleloader combines the advanced features of the Pro Hunter rifle with Thompson/Center’s solid reputation for durability and performance in the field. Separating it from the other muzzleloaders in the line, the Pro Hunter FX is standard with a fixed .50 caliber barrel that is not interchangeable with other barrel configurations. Instead, the muzzleloader sports a 26-inch fluted barrel with patented QLA (Quick Load Accurizer) for enhanced accuracy.

Other notable features include the muzzleloader’s improved handling and recoil reduction system made possible by the FlexTech stock and forend. Inside the FlexTech stock, four Energy Burners™, along with the recoil pad, allow the stock to slightly compress when firing, helping to reduce felt recoil by forty-two percent.

Additional features of the Pro Hunter FX muzzleloader include the Speed Breech 3, a new triple-lead hand-removable breech plug. Through the use of the anti-seize Speed Breech 3, no tools are required for removal, allowing shooters to take out the breech plug by hand. The new muzzleloader is also standard with fiber optic sights, along with a Swing Hammer® that can be conveniently positioned toward either side of the frame, enabling easier access to the hammer once an optic has been mounted.

To protect the muzzleloader against inclement weather, Thompson/Center has added its tough-as-nails finish, Weather Shield. When applied to the barrel, receiver and other critical parts, the Weather Shield adds an extra level of protection against corrosion, extending the durability and lifetime of each muzzleloader. Weighing in at seven pounds, the Pro Hunter FX measures 42 ½ inches in overall length and features a 14-inch length-of-pull. The new muzzleloader is available in either black composite or Realtree AP Camo.

The new Pro Hunter FX muzzleloader will be on display during the NRA Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, April 29 – May 1. Attendees are encouraged to stop by the Thompson/Center Arms booth (#1521) and view the new muzzleloader along with the Company’s extensive line of hunting firearms.

About Smith & Wesson
Ammoland.com)- Ohio’s popular muzzleloader deer season is set to open statewide January 8-11 according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife.

Last year, hunters checked 24,078 white-tailed deer during the statewide hunt.

A total of 210,361 deer have been harvested so far this season when combining the adult and youth gun seasons, early muzzleloader season, gun weekend, and the first nine weeks of the archery season.

That compares to a total of 227,748 killed last year during the same time period. Hunters took a total of 261,314 deer during all of last year’s hunting seasons.

Prior to the start of the hunting season, Ohio’s deer population was estimated at 750,000. The Division of Wildlife expects as many as 210,000 hunters will hunt deer during the muzzleloader season.

Ohio deer hunters must possess the proper permits. Regardless of zone, method of taking or season, hunters may take only one antlered deer during the 2010-2011 deer hunting season.

Legal hunting hours during the statewide muzzleloader deer season are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Deer must be checked by 8 p.m.on the day after harvest, except those killed on January 11, which must be brought to a deer check station by 8 p.m.that day.

Ohio’s small game, furbearer and waterfowl seasons also will be open during the muzzleloader season. During those overlapping four days, small game hunters and deer hunters must visibly wear a coat, jacket, vest or coveralls that are either solid hunter orange or camouflage hunter orange in color.

Hunters have been encouraged to kill more does this season and donate extra venison to organizations assisting Ohioans in need. The division is collaborating with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry to help pay for the processing of donated venison. Hunters who give their deer to a food bank are not required to pay the processing cost as long as the deer are taken to a participating processor and funding for the effort lasts. Counties being served by this program can be found online at www.fhfh.org.

The white-tailed deer is the most popular game animal in Ohio, frequently pursued by generations of hunters. Ohio ranks 8th nationally in annual hunting-related sales and 10th in the number of jobs associated with the hunting-related industry. Each year, hunting has an $859 million economic impact in Ohio through the sale of equipment, fuel, food, lodging and more.

Additional hunting regulations and maps of deer zones are contained in the 2010-2011 Ohio Hunting Regulations. This free publication is available where hunting licenses are sold and from the Division of Wildlife by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE or on the internet at wildohio.com.

The 2010-2011 licenses will not be printed on weatherproof paper. Sportsmen and women should protect their licenses and permits from the elements by carrying them in a protective pouch or wallet.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. The early winter season is popular with deer hunters and affords them the opportunity to pursue their favorite game with a different type of firearm.

“Muzzleloader hunting is a great opportunity for hunters to enjoy more time in the woods with friends and family,” said DNR’s Deer Project Leader Brian Eyler. “Last year approximately 35 percent of our muzzleloader hunters were successful in harvesting at least one deer.”

Deer hunting regulations vary between the two Deer Management Regions in Maryland. Region A consists of Garrett and Allegany counties and, new this season, the western half of Washington County. Region B includes eastern Washington County and the remaining 20 counties.

Bag limits, season dates and other deer hunting information can be found on the DNR website at http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/huntersguide and in the 2010-2011 Maryland Guide to Hunting & Trapping issued with each hunting license. Hunters are reminded to carefully inspect all permanent and portable tree stands before each use. Harness style safety belts should always be used while climbing into or out of a tree stand and while in the stand.

The DNR website has tips and a video on tree stand safety that all hunters are encouraged to become familiar with at http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/huntersguide/ts.asp. Hunters are reminded to always exercise the fundamental commandments of firearms safety while afield. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is the state agency responsible for providing natural and living resource-related services to citizens and visitors.

DNR manages nearly one-half million acres of public lands and 17,000 miles of waterways, along with Maryland’s forests, fisheries and wildlife for maximum environmental, economic and quality of life benefits. A national leader in land conservation, DNR-managed parks and natural, historic and cultural resources attract 11 million visitors annually. class="wp-caption-text">Thompson Center Arms

ROCHESTER, NH --(AmmoLand.com)- Thompson/Center Arms Company, Inc., a Smith & Wesson company, announced that it has reached an agreement with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to become an officially licensed firearms manufacturer of the century old youth organization.

Thompson/Center Arms will work with the BSA to introduce three specially designed firearms. Through this licensed relationship, current Scouts, alumni and shooting enthusiasts will be able to obtain BSA officially licensed models of the HotShot rifle, IMPACT muzzleloader and the 100th Anniversary G2 Contender muzzleloader.

“Thompson/Center is committed to the development and training of youth shooters through education on the safe handling of firearms, as well as by designing innovative products to assist with their learning,” said Tom Kelly, Vice President of Marketing for Thompson/Center Arms.

“We are thrilled to support the Boy Scouts of America’s youth shooting programs. The Boy Scouts’ commitment to excellence in shooter education has led to a lifetime of safe shooting that has enhanced the future of the sport for over 100 years. Together, we will continue to foster our resources to encourage and retain young people in the shooting sports disciplines.”

Among the firearms to be introduced are the new BSA licensed Thompson/Center HotShot youth rifle, a BSA licensed IMPACT muzzleloader and a BSA licensed 100th Anniversary G2 Contender muzzleloader. Chambered in .22LR, the HotShot is a highly accurate, lightweight single-shot rifle. Designed to look just like dad’s T/C Encore Pro Hunter, the HotShot features an easy to operate break-open design, accessible via the trigger guard release. With a weight of only 3 pounds, the HotShot provides youth and first time shooters with a perfect introductory platform that allows for safe, simple and quick operation.

Likewise, the T/C IMPACT muzzleloader was engineered with youth and small frame shooters in mind. With the muzzleloader’s adjustable length of pull, lightweight composite stock, removable breech plug and other patented features, the IMPACT helps to simplify black powder shooting both on the range and in the field. In addition to the BSA HotShot and IMPACT, Thompson/Center will also produce a limited edition G2 Contender commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. The .50 caliber G2 Contender muzzleloader will feature a special BSA insignia on the side of the stock. The G2 Contender frame allows users to quickly and easily change barrel configurations, offering both centerfire and rimfire capabilities.

“The Boy Scouts of America is pleased to recognize Thompson/Center Arms as an official licensee,” said Greg Winters, Manager, Licensed Programs.

“We are looking forward to working with Thompson/Center Arms in creating licensed products that young people in the program can learn on and enjoy.”

This summer, the 2010 National Scout Jamboree will be taking place celebrating 100 years of the Boy Scout organization. Over 300,000 people from across the globe, including over 40,000 Scouts and volunteer and professional staff are scheduled to convene at Fort A.P. Hill in Caroline County, Virginia. The 10-day event, which runs from July 26 through August 4, will temporarily transform Caroline County into the third largest county in the state, complete with its own zip code. The Jamboree program reflects the skills of scouting—physical fitness, environmental conservation, our national heritage and the true spirit of scouting. In addition to shooting sports at the jamboree, Scouts will enjoy more than 100 different activities such as shooting, fishing, rappelling, kayaking, rafting and sailing while at the jamboree.

For more information regarding Thompson/Center Arms or to view the complete line of Thompson/Center Arms firearms and accessories, visit www.tcarms.com. class="wp-caption-text">Thompson Center Arms

Rochester, NH --(AmmoLand.com)- Thompson/Center Arms Company, Inc., a Smith & Wesson company, announced that it has partnered with Drury Outdoors to produce an exclusive firearm for black powder hunters – the T/C Dream Season Omega Muzzleloader.

Drury Outdoors co-owner and television personality Terry Drury will be in attendance during the 2010 National Rifle Association (NRA) Annual Meeting and Exhibits in Charlotte, North Carolina, to help Thompson/Center unveil the new muzzleloader to members of the outdoor and shooting sports community.

The Drury brothers, Mark and Terry, began producing and hosting outdoor television shows in the late 1980s, and their names have become synonymous with harvesting massive bucks across the United States from the cornfields of Illinois to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. The Drury brothers’ hunting exploits don’t end at whitetails; the duo also hosts shows that range from turkeys to all big game animals. Popular titles of their DVD series include: Longbeard Madness, Predator Madness and The Big Game. Built on a 100 percent fair chase belief, Mark and Terry bring the viewing public four television shows, along with numerous DVD titles that they produce year in and year out.

“We are careful about who we represent and even more careful about who we partner with as it pertains to the Dream Season® mark,” said Mark and Terry Drury.

“We don’t just endorse these products; we help design them, we believe in them, and we use them everyday in the field. The Dream Season® Omega represents something that we have sought with Thompson/Center Arms for many years and we are ecstatic to finally have this Dream come to fruition!”

The Drury bothers’ love of chasing big whitetails has inspired hunters everywhere to pick up their muzzleloader and take to the woods. With this in mind, Thompson/Center Arms is introducing the T/C Dream Season Omega Muzzleloader built in collaboration with Mark and Terry. Built on the company’s venerable and trusted black powder platform, the Omega, the Dream Season muzzleloader incorporates several key features. From the rifle’s sleek profile to its drop breech action, the Dream Season Omega Muzzleloader is both simple to operate and extremely accurate. The .50 caliber muzzleloader is standard with a uniquely crafted 26-inch stainless steel, precision rifled barrel with a 1 in 28 inch twist. At the heart of the muzzleloader is the rifle’s sealed pivoting breech, which is accessed via the trigger guard lever. The closed breech design not only seals the 209-primer ignition from inclement weather, but it also provides quick access to the removable breech plug and helps to simplify cleaning.

To help soften recoil, the muzzleloader features a FlexTech stock that is equipped with four Energy Burners, allowing the stock to slightly compress during recoil. This design is easy on the shooter’s shoulder and reduces felt recoil by 43 percent. Other standard features include adjustable sights with fiber optics inserts, aluminum PowerRod and the company’s patented Quick Load Accurizor (QLA) muzzle system that incorporates a false muzzle design into the very end of the barrel. This unique system is designed to align the bullet squarely with the barrel, while enhancing accuracy and saving precious time when reloading. The Dream Season Omega Muzzleloader also features QD sling swivel studs and the Mossy Oak Treestand pattern. The new muzzleloader is built entirely in the United States and backed by T/C’s lifetime warranty. The Dream Season Omega will have an MSRP of $499.

On May 15, 2010, during the second day of the NRA convention, Terry Drury will be in the Thompson/Center booth to unveil the new Dream Season Omega Muzzleloader. Those in attendance are encouraged to stop by the Thompson/Center booth to speak with Terry about the new rifle and about his passion for black powder hunting. The Thompson/Center booth (#1519) will be located in the main hall of the Charlotte Convention Center.

For more information regarding the new Dream Season Omega Muzzleloader or to view the complete line of Thompson/Center Arms firearms and accessories, visit www.tcarms.com.

About Smith & Wesson
Thompson Center Arms

ROCHESTER, N.H. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Thompson/Center Arms Company, Inc., a Smith & Wesson company, is pleased to announce their support of a soon to be released educational DVD produced by the National Rifle Association (NRA) entitled “Taking the Mystery Out of Muzzleloading.”

The new instructional video is a valuable tool designed to introduce and further educate consumers and instructors on the fundamentals of muzzleloading and its allure.

“Throughout the development of the DVD, we had two distinct goals in mind,” said Bill Poole, Director, NRA Education and Training Division. “First, we wanted to provide retailers and dealers with a recruitment tool designed to expose both hunters and shooters to the sport of muzzleloading. Our second goal was to supply instructors with an enriched tool to use in training courses across the nation. With the availability of this DVD, we now have another opportunity to inform people who otherwise might not be aware of the many activities that can be accomplished with a muzzleloader.”

Featuring segments on both the traditional and modern in-line muzzleloaders, the new DVD helps to answer questions frequently asked by new shooters entering the sport while also providing black powder enthusiasts with helpful tips once they are in the field.

The DVD covers such topics as the history of black powder, identifying the different types of muzzleloaders, shooting fundamentals, loading options, safety and more. The end result is an informative piece for use in the home or in the classroom.

“Thompson/Center is committed to supporting the NRA and those initiatives which benefit youth and beginners alike,” said Tom Kelly, Vice President of Marketing for Smith & Wesson and Thompson/Center Arms. “With the ever changing technologies and features in muzzleloading, we agree that this DVD is a perfect way to help new hunters and shooters get more involved. Our commitment to the NRA and their youth and education projects remains steadfast and we’re proud to support this new release.”

The NRA plans to distribute the DVD to all sponsors and will also make it available to NRA/NMLRA instructors. class="wp-caption-text">Ohio Division of Wildlife

COLUMBUS, OH --(AmmoLand.com)- Ohio’s popular muzzleloader deer season is set to open statewide January 9-12 according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife. Last year, hunters checked 20,659 white-tailed deer during the statewide hunt.

A total of 227,748 deer have been harvested so far this season when combining the adult and youth gun seasons, early muzzleloader season, gun weekend, and the first nine weeks of the archery season. That compares to a total of 218,890 killed last year during the same time period. Hunters took a total of 252,017 deer during all of last year’s hunting seasons.

Prior to the start of the hunting season, Ohio’s deer population was estimated at 650,000. The Division of Wildlife expects as many as 210,000 hunters will hunt deer during the muzzleloader season.

Ohio deer hunters must possess the proper permits. Regardless of zone, method of taking or season, hunters may take only one antlered deer during the 2009-2010 deer hunting season.

Legal hunting hours during the statewide muzzleloader deer season are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Deer must be checked by 8 p.m. on the day after harvest, except those killed on January 12, which must be brought to a deer check station by 8 p.m. that day.

Ohio ranks 6th nationally in annual hunting-related sales and 4th in the number of jobs associated with the hunting-related industry. Each year, hunting has a $1.5 billion economic impact in Ohio. Hunting related retail sales in Ohio total more than $700 million.

Additional hunting regulations and maps of deer zones are contained in the 2009-2010 Ohio Hunting Regulations. This free publication is available where hunting licenses are sold and from the Division of Wildlife by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE or on the Internet at wildohio.com.

The 2009-2010 licenses will not be printed on weatherproof paper. Sportsmen and women should protect their licenses and permits from the elements by carrying them in a protective pouch or wallet.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. The firearm must be an original or reproduction of a gun used prior to 1800. Peep sights and fiber-optic inserts are permitted, as well as iron, open “V” or notched sights. A flintlock ignition system consists of a hammer containing a naturally-occurring stone which is spring-propelled onto an iron or steel frizzen, which, in turn, creates sparks to ignite the gunpowder. Flintlock muzzleloader hunters may use “any single projectile” ammunition.

Hunters are reminded that firearms limitations for special regulations counties – Allegheny, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia – remain in effect for the extended antlerless season in WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D. Those restrictions do not apply to those portions of Beaver, Berks, Butler, Lehigh, Northampton, Washington and Westmoreland counties contained in WMUs 2B and 5C, where firearms deer hunters may choose to use a rifle, shotgun or crossbow.

Hunters using archery or muzzleloader licenses, and hunting with those special sporting arms, are not required to wear fluorescent orange clothing while afield, but are encouraged to do so where the seasons overlap with late season firearms deer hunters. Special regulations area hunters must wear 250 square inches of fluorescent orange clothing, unless they possess an archery or muzzleloader license and are hunting with a bow, flintlock or crossbow.

Those hunting in the late seasons also may take coyotes with either a general hunting license or a furtaker license, 24 hours a day, from July 1-June 30, including Sundays, as per specifics listed on page 76 of the 2009-10 Hunting and Trapping Digest. The bag limit is unlimited, and hunters may use electronic calls and can pursue coyotes without wearing fluorescent orange in most instances. Also, trappers can take an unlimited number of coyotes until Feb. 21.

Trappers also may use cable restraints for foxes and coyotes from Jan. 1 through Feb. 21. In order to participate in this season, trappers must have passed a mandatory cable restraint certification program, which was developed and implemented with the assistance of the Pennsylvania Trappers Association.

Furbearer hunting seasons continuing through the winter months, include: red and gray foxes, until Feb. 20, including Sundays; raccoons, until Feb. 20; bobcats, for those with special permits, until Feb. 20; and skunks, opossums and weasels, until June 30 (certain restrictions apply during the spring gobbler season, so please refer to page 76 of the 2009-10 Digest).

Furbearer trapping seasons include: beavers, Dec. 26-March 31 (bag limits depend on WMU, which is outlined on page 74 of the 2009-10 Digest); minks and muskrats, until Jan. 10; raccoons, skunks, opossums, foxes and weasels, until Feb. 21; and bobcats, for those with special permits, until Feb. 21.

“Trappers seeking new locations to place sets are encouraged to contact any of the agency’s six region offices for contact information for landowners looking for relief from nuisance beavers,” Roe said. He also recommended trappers review the various “Field Officer Game Forecasts” available online (www.pgc.state.pa.us).

Crows may be hunted on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until April 4.

Dove hunters also will have late season opportunities when dove season reopens Dec. 26-Jan. 2. Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset, and the daily limit is 15.

Waterfowl hunters have plenty of hunting opportunities to pursue from December into March. Hunters can take Canada geese and white-fronted geese during the following upcoming seasons: Atlantic Population Zone, Dec. 19-Jan. 26; Southern James Bay Canada Goose Hunting Zone, Dec. 14-Jan. 28; and Resident Canada Goose Zone, from Dec. 11-Feb. 19. Atlantic brant may be taken from Dec. 10-31. Statewide snow goose season runs until Feb. 19, after which the conservation season runs from Feb. 20 through April 3. In addition to all required licenses, conservation season snow goose hunters must obtain a free permit from the Game Commission website.

Ducks, sea ducks, coots and mergansers may be hunted in the Lake Erie Zone until Jan. 2; in the North Zone, until Jan. 9; in the Northwest Zone Dec. 14-Jan. 1; and in the South Zone until Jan. 15.

For details on waterfowl bag limits in each of the zones, please consult the Pennsylvania 2009-10 Guide to Migratory Game Bird Hunting, which is available on the agency’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) by clicking on the “Waterfowl Hunting 2009-10” icon in the center of the homepage.

In addition to a regular Pennsylvania hunting license, persons 16 and older must have a Federal Migratory Bird and Conservation Stamp, commonly referred to as a “Duck Stamp” to hunt waterfowl. Regardless of age, hunters also must have a Pennsylvania Migratory Game Bird License to hunt waterfowl and other migratory birds, including doves, woodcock, coots, moorhens, rails and snipe. All migratory game bird hunters in the United States are required to complete a Harvest Information Program survey when they purchase a state migratory game bird license. The survey information is then forwarded to the USFWS.
Tags: Ohio Department Natural Resources

COLUMBUS, OH --(AmmoLand.com)- Ohio hunters took 114,633 white-tailed deer during the state’s popular, weeklong deer-gun season, which ran November 30 through December 6, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. In 2008, hunters killed a preliminary total of 116,798 deer during the same time period.

Counties reporting the highest numbers of deer brought to Ohio check stations last week included Tuscarawas-5,901; Harrison-4,310; Guernsey-4,289; Licking-3,734; Coshocton-3,680; Washington-3,589; Holmes-3,265; Belmont-3,238; Athens-3,049; and Knox-3,046.

A total of 178,397 deer have been harvested so far this season when combining the adult and youth gun seasons, early muzzleloader season, and the first six weeks of the archery season. That compares to a total of 179,194 killed last year during the same time period. Hunters took a total of 252,017 deer during all of last year’s hunting seasons.

The statewide deer population was estimated to be 650,000 in late September, prior to the start of the hunting season. Approximately 420,000 hunters were expected to participate in the statewide deer-gun season.

Hunters still have a weekend of deer-gun hunting, December 19-20, and nine weeks of archery hunting in Ohio. Archery season remains open until February 7, 2010. The statewide muzzleloader deer-hunting season will be held January 9-12, 2010.

Saturday, December 5 was designated as Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry Day. Although Chief Dave Graham was unable to fill his tag that day, many other hunters did and donated. Totals for deer donated though the FHFH program will be available next week.

Donations of extra deer will be accepted through the entire deer season which ends on February 7, 2010. Hunters who give their deer to a food bank are not required to pay the processing cost as long as the deer are taken to a participating processor and funding for the effort lasts. Counties being served by this program can be found online at www.fhfh.org.

Hunters who wish to share their success can submit a photo of themselves and the deer they killed this year to www.wildohio.com.

The white-tailed deer is the most popular game animal in Ohio, frequently pursued by generations of hunters. Ohio ranks 8th nationally in annual hunting-related sales and 10th in the number of jobs associated with the hunting-related industry. Each year, hunting has a $859 million economic impact in Ohio through the sale of equipment, fuel, food, lodging and more.

Ohio’s first modern day deer-gun season opened in 1943 in three counties, when hunters harvested 168 deer. In 1956, deer hunting was allowed in all 88 counties and hunters killed 3,911 deer during that one-week season.

A detailed listing of deer-hunting rules is contained in the 2009-2010 Ohio Hunting Regulations, available where licenses are sold. It may also be viewed online at www.wildohio.com.

NOTE: The Following Is A List Of Deer Checked And Tagged By Hunters During The 2009 Deer-Gun Hunting Season. The muzzleloader hunt is statewide with the exception of most state parks. There is also an ongoing deer hunting season through Dec. 9 in designated metropolitan, or metro, units due to higher deer populations near some urban areas. Check the current deer hunting regulations for details.

Following the muzzleloader hunt is a four-day antlerless deer hunt running Dec. 10 through 13 statewide except in state parks and in Menominee County.

“The later seasons generally are more relaxed and less crowded,” said Keith Warnke, big game ecologist for the Department of Natural Resources. “It’s a quieter time in the woods that many hunters find enjoyable and it extends the hunting season.”

The late archery deer season also started on Nov. 30 and runs through Jan. 3, 2010. Archers and small game hunters are reminded that they must observe blaze orange clothing requirements during the muzzleloader and December antlerless deer hunt seasons.

License sales officials say there are unit-specific antlerless deer tags are still available for some regular units for $12 each. Antlerless deer tags for herd control units and earn-a-buck units are available for $3 each.

Visit the deer hunting pages of the DNR Web site for details on license requirements, permit availability, bag limits and harvest rules. class="wp-caption-text">Nebraska Game and Parks Commission

LINCOLN, Neb. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Excellent deer hunting opportunities remain in Nebraska as the muzzleloader season arrives, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The season runs Dec. 1-31.

The recently completed firearm season proved that plenty of deer and large bucks are available. Those firearm hunters were hampered somewhat by the lagging corn harvest, but conditions are improving for December as that harvest continues.

A muzzleloader permit is valid statewide and has a bag limit of one deer of either sex and one antlerless white-tailed deer. The limit may be filled in any order.

“We encourage hunters to take antlerless female white-tailed deer,” said Kit Hams, big game program manager with the Commission. “The use of binoculars or scopes will help hunters avoid buck fawns, which often are more visible than adult does or doe fawns. By this time of year, the small antler ‘buttons’ are 1-2 inches in length and visible.”

There is an unlimited number of muzzleloader permits available again this year. Last year, 15,199 permits sold and 6,946 deer were taken.

Now that the firearm season has closed, hunters again have the option of checking deer electronically or at a check station. Hunters may check electronically by going to NEdeercheck.com or calling toll-free (800) 405-7700 at any time.

The Deer Exchange remains available, too. Donors and recipients of venison may register for free at ngpc.state.ne.us/hunting/programs/deerexchange/.

Open Fields and Waters Program lands, popular with firearm hunters, are a good option for muzzleloader hunters. This program has more than 36,000 acres of private land available for public walk-in hunting access. Check the 2009 Nebraska Public Access Atlas for tracts in each county.

Permits may be purchased at Commission permitting offices and at OutdoorNebraska.org. A habitat stamp is required of all deer hunters, except residents age 15 or younger.

For more information on deer hunting, visit OutdoorNebraska.org or read the 2009 Nebraska Big Game Guide.
Tags: Ohio Division of Wildlife

COLUMBUS, OH --(AmmoLand.com)- Ohio’s popular deer-gun season opens statewide on Monday, November 30, offering hunters a full week to harvest a whitetail. The upcoming season will again include an extra weekend of gun hunting on December 19-20, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

Deer can be hunted with a legal muzzleloader, handgun or shotgun from one half-hour before sunrise to sunset through December 6 and December 19-20. With a pre-hunting season population estimate of 650,000 white-tailed deer, the ODNR Division of Wildlife anticipates 115,000 to 125,000 deer will be killed during the nine-day season. Approximately 420,000 hunters are expected to participate in this year’s season, including many out-of-state hunters.

Ohio is divided into three deer hunting zones. Beginning on the opening day of gun season and continuing through December 6 a limit of one deer may be taken in Zone A (20 counties) and two deer in Zone B (30 counties). A total of six deer may be harvested in eastern and southeastern Ohio’s Zone C (38 counties) through the week long gun season. The antlerless deer permit will be valid for deer-gun week only in Zone C.

Beginning on December 7, the bag limit is three deer in Zone C and antlerless deer permits are no longer valid. Any time a hunter is allowed to take more than one deer, they must purchase an additional permit.

Those hunting in urban units and at Division of Wildlife-authorized controlled hunts will have a six-deer bag limit, and those deer will not count against the hunter’s zone bag limit. Antlerless deer permits can be used for the entire season in urban deer units or Division of Wildlife-authorized controlled hunts. Antlerless deer permits must be purchased by November 29.

Hunters may take only one antlered deer, regardless of zone, hunting method or season. A deer permit is required in addition to a valid Ohio hunting license.

Hunters are encouraged to kill more does this season using the reduced-priced antlerless deer permit and donate any extra venison to organizations assisting Ohioans in need. The Division is collaborating with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry to help pay for the processing of donated venison. Hunters who donate their deer are not required to pay the processing cost as long as the deer are taken to a participating processor. Counties being served by this program can be found online at fhfh.org.

Additional hunting regulations and maps of the state’s deer zones are contained in the 2009-2010 Ohio Hunting & Trapping Regulations. This free publication is available wherever hunting licenses are sold, online at wildohio.com or by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE.

The 2009-2010 licenses will not be printed on weatherproof paper. Sportsmen and women should protect their licenses and permits from the elements by carrying them in a protective pouch or wallet.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. class="wp-caption-text">Arkansas Game & Fish Commission

Arkansas --(AmmoLand.com)- Flooding closes White River North Unit muzzleloader deer hunts. Click here to to the White River NWR web site. ST. CHARLES – The White River National Wildlife Refuge will close the North Unit quota deer hunt on Oct. 17-19 and the North Unit non-quota buck-only hunt, Oct. 20-23 due to an unprecedented early flood season. The South Unit hunt remains open for now. North Unit permit holders are not allowed to hunt in the South Unit.

“We regret closing these North Unit hunts due to the flood, but we also need to ensure hunter safety and protect the deer resource for the future,” said refuge manger Dennis Sharp.

Unfortunately, this water level will keep the North Unit closed for deer archery hunting and prevent the scheduled North Unit muzzleloader deer hunt.

“At this time, we do not anticipate closing the South Unit muzzleloader deer season due to flooding, but hunters are encouraged to monitor water levels,” Sharp said.

He went on to say that the North Unit quota muzzleloader deer permits will not be refundable or renewed as the money has already been spent on associated hunt administration costs. 850 hunters had been issued permits for this year’s hunt. Another 300 were not. The permits will also not be renewed for next year’s hunt.

“I can’t, in all good conscience, renew the 850 North Unit permits for next year, as that would be mean that the other 300 applicants who did not get permits would not be able to hunt there for two years,” Sharp said. “I also can’t predict the impacts of the unprecedented flooding on the deer herd in the North Unit, so I don’t know how many quotas will be offered there next year.”

“I know many hunters will be disappointed in missing this great public hunting opportunity, and I sure understand their frustration,” said Sharp. “I encourage you to apply again for next year’s hunts and hope for more favorable river levels now and next year.”

The North Unit of the refuge closes to deer hunting when the White River reaches 23 feet at St. Charles and does not reopen until the level falls below 21 feet. The river reached the 23-foot level the first week of October, closing archery deer season on the North Unit. The river is currently rising at St. Charles and projected to remain above 21 feet through Oct. 23.

The South Unit closes to all deer hunting when the White River gauge at St. Charles reaches 23 feet and the tailwater gauge reading at Norrel Lock and Dam #1 reaches 145 feet simultaneously as reported at the following website: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/lzk/html/whitervr.htm.

Up-to-date flood related deer season closure information is also available on the refuge’s recorded phone message system at (870) 282-8200. Hunters camping on the South Unit should carefully monitor rising river levels that may flood their camp or overtop exit routes.

These types of flooding events, although part of natural floodplain system, can impact deer and other wildlife populations, and may change the number of quotas available for next year.

For more information, please visit: http://www.fws.gov/whiteriver/images/WhiteRiverHuntBrochureText09.pdf http://www.fws.gov/whiteriver/huntingpage.html.
Tags: Georgia Department of Natural Resources

SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. --(AmmoLand.com)- The week-long primitive weapons deer hunting season begins Saturday, Oct. 10. During primitive weapons season, hunters may use archery equipment (including crossbows), muzzleloading shotguns (20 gauge or larger) and muzzleloading firearms (.44 caliber or larger).

“Our primitive weapons deer season provides hunters the opportunity to hunt with traditional or inline black powder firearms or to continue hunting with archery gear,” said John Bowers, assistant chief of Game Management for the Wildlife Resources Division.

“Hunters are allowed to hunt either-sex deer during this week-long opportunity. Primitive weapons hunters have a wide variety of options depending on their personal choices and needs without being burdened by complex regulations.”

More than one million acres of public hunting land is available to hunters in Georgia, including more than 100 state-operated wildlife management areas where special hunts are offered throughout the season, including primitive weapons hunts. Dates and locations for these hunts are available in the 2009-2010 Georgia Hunting Seasons and Regulations guide, and WMA maps are available at www.gohuntgeorgia.com .

During the 2008 primitive weapons season, 58,264 hunters harvested 16,897 deer – a harvest rate that has remained relatively stable in recent years.

Hunters are allowed a season total of ten antlerless deer and two antlered deer (one of the two antlered deer must have a minimum of four points, one inch or longer, on one side of the antlers).

Under the new hunting and fishing license sales system, the primitive weapons license is no longer required to hunt during archery and primitive weapons seasons. However, a valid hunting and big game license is required, as is a deer harvest record. In most cases, a separate WMA license is required to hunt on a WMA.

All hunters, including archers, must wear at least 500 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange above the waist during primitive weapons season. Scopes and other optical sighting devices are considered legal for muzzleloading firearms and archery equipment.

Georgia is considered the top destination in the country for non-resident hunters and continues to draw tens of thousands of deer hunters from across the country each year. The state’s quality deer herd and the more than one million available acres of public hunting land serve as the main appeal.

For more information on deer hunting seasons and regulations, visit www.gohuntgeorgia.com .
Tags: West Virginia DNR

West Virginia --(AmmoLand.com)- Deer hunting comes early to the West Virginia hills this fall.

“The special antlerless deer seasons for archery and muzzleloader hunters will open on private land in certain counties in September,” said West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Director.

Frank Jezioro, who wants hunters to be well armed with the facts before entering the woods.

The early archery season opens September 14 and closes September 19. Hunters wishing to participate in this season must buy a Class RB or Class RRB stamp before going afield. The stamp allows a hunter to take one antlerless deer during this archery season.

The early muzzleloader season opens September 21 and closes September 26. Hunters must buy a Class RM or RRM stamp before hunting. This stamp allows a hunter to take one antlerless deer during this muzzleloader season.

If a hunter does not fill a tag during either season, the appropriate stamp can be used during the regular archery or muzzleloader season.

Landowners hunting on their own land or holders of the new DT license do not have to buy a stamp.

Prepare for Early Warm Weather Deer Hunting

“With these early seasons, you need to know before you hunt how you’ll take care of it in the field and how you’ll get your deer processed,” said Jezioro. “If you don’t plan to process the deer yourself, make sure beforehand that your deer processor will be open to process the deer.” If your regular processor is not open, Jezioro suggests processing the deer yourself. This is a relatively simple process and numerous guides exist explaining how to do it.

“Cooling the deer meat will be a prime concern,” say Jezioro. He encourages hunters to keep a bag of ice in a cooler at camp or in the car. “After you have field dressed the deer, throw the bag of ice into the chest cavity. Get the hide off the deer as soon as you can. This will let the meat cool quicker.”

Hunters planning on participating in the early seasons need to remember to check their equipment earlier than normal to increase their chances for a safe and successful hunt.

“The opening dates are fast approaching and these seasons will provide an excellent opportunity to hunt deer earlier in the year when weather conditions are generally milder. A little preplanning can greatly enhance your outdoor experience,” Jezioro said.

Tags: Tony Knight worked several years for the Rock Island railroad company in Illinois. As times changed Tony was laid off and moved home to Missouri. Being an avid hunter and gunsmith, Tony opened up a shop in his home doing repairs and selling firearms. Several of Tony’s customers had drawn muzzleloader Elk tags and had had bad luck with the inclement weather they had encountered during their hunt. Several misfires from there flintlocks had made for an unsuccessful hunt. After coming home and speaking with Tony about their hunt, Tony started working on a much more reliable ignition system that would retro fit their muzzleloaders. After reading several books and articles on muzzleloading Tony ran across an older 1800’s version of in-line muzzleloading. From that article, Tony used his tools and knowledge to make the first modern day in-line muzzleloader in 1985. The MK-85 was named after his daughter Michele Knight. Tony’s idea became well known throughout the next several years and he moved the company to Centerville Iowa where the company resides to this day. In 1997 Tony once again shocked the muzzleloading world with the Knight DISC rifle which has set the standard for all muzzleloaders today.
Tags: Nikon Hunting

Melville, NY - -(AmmoLand.com)- Nikon rocked the Muzzleloading world with the introduction of the original Omega Muzzleloading riflescope and the new Omega promises more of the same for 2009. Blackpowder hunters now have more options to find the scope that best suits their terrain and style of hunting.

The New Omega 1.65-5×36 is a lower magnification, more compact version of its big brother the 3-9×40. Fully packed with features, including the Nikon BDC 250 Reticle calibrated for ballistic tipped sabot muzzleloader bullets, the new Omega is every bit as precise as the original.

“No matter what a hunter’s choice is for a firearm, Nikon has a scope built specifically for that application,” said Nikon Sport Optics General Manager Jon Allen. “From the SlugHunter line to the Omega line to the Encore line, Nikon has more pursuit specific tools than any other optics company.”

Five full inches of eye relief mean you can comfortably and safely mount this scope on even the hardest kicking muzzleloaders. With a super bright exit pupil of 7.2mm and Nikon’s fully multicoated lens you can hunt right up to the end of legal shooting time. The durable one-inch tube features hand turn 1/4 MOA adjustment and a 100-yard parallax setting. class="wp-caption-text">Budd's Gunsmith Shop

Lily, Kentucky - -(AmmoLand.com)- The ATF does not consider Black powder guns a firearm. That is strange, because they expel a projectile out of the barrel just the same as any other gun. But it is great for me and you because there is no NICS check then. They are also great fun!

Care of the iron
Black power weapons need some special care. One of the most important things to remember, is to keep them clean and greased. If they are not properly greased, they will seize up and become welded together.

Avoiding the problem
After a shooting session, the gun needs to be cleaned and taken apart. Any part that could freeze up must be removed and cleaned. More importantly when reassembling the components anit-sieze grease formulated for black powder needs to be used. This would apply to nipples and breach plugs.

If it is possible to take off the side drum from the side hammerlock, it should be done. Clean the port and grease the threads. Carefully installing the drum with the right alignment for the hammer is very important.

Checking your work
After the gun is reassembled, you should be able to blow through the barrel and breech hole and hear airflow. Preventive If you feel comfortable remove the side lock and grease the lock, then reinstall.

Inline and breakdowns Rifles
While the inline and breakdowns style rifles have eliminated the side hammer there are still issues to deal with. The inline with a nipple should still be removed, cleaned and greased. And the breach plug also cleaned and greased. The 502 type breach also needs to be removed, cleaned and greased

Any type of gun dealing with Blackpowder needs this care but with just a little bit of attention your Black Powers Rifle should last for years.

Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks

Kansas - -(AmmoLand.com)- The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has announced that 2009 nonresident deer permit applications will be accepted beginning May 1, with one major change from previous years — applications must be made online through the KDWP website.

The application deadline is midnight on June 1. Downloadable mail-in applications will not be available, and none will be accepted.

This application applies to Nonresident White-tailed Deer permits only. Nonresident Hunt-Own-Land and Antlerless White-tailed Deer permits will be available July 13 over the counter.

This change will streamline the process for both applicants and licensing personnel and was made in part because the majority of applications last year were made online.
Nonresident White-tailed Deer permits allow the taking of one white-tailed deer buck, doe, or fawn.

The cost of the permit is $333.21, and if successful in the drawing, the applicant must also purchase a nonresident hunting license, $72.50, prior to hunting.

The hunter applies in one deer management unit and may also select one adjacent unit in which to hunt. Applicants also select one equipment type and season choice (archery, muzzleloader, or firearm) at the time of application. Muzzleloader permit holders may hunt during early muzzleloader season and regular firearms season using muzzleloader equipment only. If unsuccessful in the draw, the hunter receives a $301 refund and a preference point for next year’s draw.

A nonresident who successfully draws an Archery or Muzzleloader White-tailed Deer permit in Unit 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 16, 17, or 18 may also apply for one of a limited number of Mule Deer Stamps for an additional fee of $102.50, submitted at time of application; if drawn, the applicant’s archery or muzzleloader whitetail permit converts to an either-species/either-sex archery or muzzleloader permit. Preference points do not count toward this stamp. If unsuccessful in the Mule Deer Stamp draw, the hunter will receive a $101 refund and be issued the whitetail permit.

A nonresident hunter who doesn’t want to hunt in 2009 can purchase a preference point online for $21.50. The preference point will count toward a Nonresident White-tailed Deer permit in a future drawing.

To apply for a Nonresident White-tailed Deer permit, click here.
