class="wp-caption-text">National Rifle Association

FAIRFAX, Va. --(Ammoland.com)- Sporting goods wholesalers across the country are teaming with the National Rifle Association (NRA) to provide benefits to U.S. military personnel, law enforcement, and first responders.

The National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW) has now signed on to support the NRA Life of Duty program, which serves all those who wear a uniform and carry a firearm to protect the American people.

Participating NASGW members aim to raise $2 for each firearm sold in December while other members are providing a donation to the program.

“Every penny of the proceeds will be used to purchase special NRA Life of Duty memberships for American heroes. We owe these brave men and women who risk life and limb daily for our safety and freedom an immeasurable debt of gratitude. NRA is humbled to help them in this modest but meaningful way,” said NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre.

Through NRA Life of Duty (LOD), qualified active duty personnel receive valuable benefits including $25,000 in life insurance, hefty discounts on gear, and access to top-quality stories ––about heroes just like them–– through the LOD network and a unique digital magazine, NRA American Warrior.

Even better, thanks to generous donors, these memberships are provided at no cost to the service person, law enforcement officer, or first responder.

“This is an opportunity for our members to participate in a fantastic program that will benefit our active military,” said Jack Baumler, chairman of the board of NASGW. “When the board first heard about the program at the NRA convention, we decided then and there that we should participate.”

Seven NASGW members have signed on thus far for the fundraising effort: Gunarama Wholesale Inc. (Spokane, WA), L.M. Burney Distributors (Waco, TX), Lipsey’s (Baton Rouge, LA), W L Baumler Co. (Lorain, OH), Jerry’s Sports Center Inc. (Jenkins Townships, PA), Camfour Inc. (Westfield, MA) and Ellett Brothers (Chapin, S.C.).

“We are excited about this project,” said Ellett Brothers Chairman Hewitt Grant. “We can think of no better group to honor.”

Laurie Aronson, president and CEO of Lipsey’s, agrees. “We hope this will make more than 10,000 memberships into NRA Life of Duty available,” she said.

These NASGW members join a number of companies that have already stepped up to support NRA Life of Duty. Brownells is the presenting sponsor, and Brownells Law Enforcement Division: PoliceStore.com, Colt, FNH USA and Roll of Honor are also participating.

“We strongly encourage everyone to find a way to support NRA’s Life of Duty,” said NASGW President Maurice A. Desmarais. “With donations or discounts, this is a way to really say ‘Thank you’ to the men and women who protect our freedom, and our lives, every day.”

SPONSOR NRA LIFE OF DUTY
You, too, can sponsor NRA Life of Duty memberships for those serving in the military and law enforcement or as first responders. A $50 membership includes gear discounts and the NRA American Warrior digital magazine, as well as as $25,000 in accidental death insurance for qualified LOD members, plus $2,500 for members seriously injured in the line of duty. class="wp-caption-text">NASGW

North Haven, CT --(Ammoland.com)- Insight: Tell us a little about your company.

Mossberg was founded in 1919 and is based in North Haven, CT. We are the oldest family-owned firearms company in the U.S. and have 377 employees in factories in North Haven and Eagle Pass, TX. We serve the U.S. market and export more firearms than any other U.S. manufacturer to over 85 countries. Our company provides firearms for over 40 military agencies world-wide and has been in service with the U.S. Military for over 30 years.

The U.S. Military selected the Mossberg 500 and 590A1 12 gauge pump action shotguns which meet the rigorous MilSpec 3443 requirement. We also serve the largest police department and state police agency in the U.S. along with numerous others. In the sporting market, we manufacture, sell and distribute a full line of shotguns, bolt action rifles, lever action rifles and rimfire rifles in semi-auto and bolt action. We also have the most complete line of youth firearms on the market with over 40 options.

InSight: This is a BIG year for Mossberg. Tell us about that.
Yes, it is a big year for Mossberg as we embark on a more customer and consumer based strategy. We have introduced a new ad campaign focused on “Field Proven Performance”. This campaign spans print, TV, web and radio mediums. We also have a new focus on editorial coverage for Mossberg in all those mediums. On the retail front, Mossberg has introduced a major initiative called the Mossberg Triple Crown Dealer Program. This program has a stocking dealer element, Point-of-Sale materials, dealer and distributor sales associate incentives and special dealer VIP pricing. Mossberg has also added professional shooters Jerry Miculek and Patrick Flanigan. Lastly, and certainly not least, as of the NRA Show in May, Mossberg will have announced 19 new products this year. As we all know, new products are the life blood of the firearm industry so those introductions are critical to go with the new pull marketing programs. All of these products, initiatives and more are part of fulfilling a commitment to customers to create more pull marketing.

InSight: How competitive do you feel the current market is compared to 5 years ago and how has it affected your business?
The market is significantly more competitive than it was 5 years ago. Consumers are looking for quality, value and solutions.

The mass of the consumer base is becoming more educated on what products fill those requirements. Therefore it is critical that manufacturers meet those demands in order to be successful. It affects Mossberg’s business significantly because we feel that we meet those demands with quality solutions at affordable prices. Our business is healthy for that reason.

InSight: How long has your company been a member of NASGW and how has it helped your business?
Mossberg has been a member of NASGW for 30+ years. We feel that distribution is the key to our business and we spend the majority of our time focused on distributors. This is evident in the development of selling tools like the new Mossberg Triple Crown Dealer Program. This initiative was widely embraced during the show season and outperformed our expectations. Also, we feel that the time investment at the NASGW Show and in preparation is possibly the most important part of our year. We view this event as our time to share our new programs and products and reach joint commitment for the upcoming year.

While other sales outlets are important, unlike most industries today, the local dealer is still a critical part of the outdoor industry. We feel that the significant role distribution plays with the retailer justifies our focus.

InSight: How does your company stay viable and thrive during this period of constant change?
We believe that the vitality of the outdoor industry begins and ends with new products. While all the other areas mentioned such as customer focus, aggressive programs and good pull marketing are critical, everyone is capable of such strengths. At the end of the day, successful companies will be the ones that have dynamic new products to go with solid business practices.

InSight: What do you believe to be the biggest challenges facing manufacturers in the sporting goods industry?
We believe that we face two major challenges today. The decline of potential hunters and sport shooters is something we must all be aware of and address to the best of our ability. Even with the growth of firearm sales for self defense, it is critical that we find ways to help with the growth of shooting sports. The other area we must stay focused on is legislative issues. Obviously, protection of the Second Amendment and the public’s right to those freedoms is of critical importance to our industry.

InSight: Do you feel that your communication with your wholesaler partners has improved or declined in recent years. If so, how?
At Mossberg, we hope that communication has increased dramatically in the last year. We have increased staff and focus in this area.

We made a commitment to not only be more responsive but also to be proactive in seeking opportunities with distribution. Lastly, we hold a firm belief that we should always strive to be easy to do business with.

In Sight: How can we (NASGW) improve the relationship with all of our members?
At Mossberg, we value the NASGW and appreciate the role played in coordination with distribution.

InSight: What’s new at Mossberg in the way of new, improved or innovative products?
As previously mentioned, Mossberg will introduce 19 new products during the first half of 2011 with more on the way. Some of these are line extensions and others are truly new and innovative products. It continues to be our commitment to stay focused on innovation, quality and value. Some of the headliners so far this year are the Tactical .22, 500 Chainsaw Shotgun, Tri-Rail Shotguns, Turkey THUG Shoguns, 50th Anniversary 500 and many more to come at the NRA Show.

InSight: How do you use the NASGW Expo as part of your business sales and marketing plans?
As mentioned above, we feel that the time investment at the NASGW Expo is possibly the most important part of our year. It is our time to share our new programs and products, determine how we will plan for success and reach joint commitments. Said more specifically, the NASGW Expo is critical to our business.

InSight: What would you say sets you apart from your competitors and has allowed Mossberg to stay successful for 100 years?
Well it’s “only 92 years” but we’ve got 100 in our sights. Mossberg has been legendary in its ability to adapt to the market and offer innovation, quality and value. This has consistently been a theme of the family and the company. In that same spirit, the company continues to renew itself with a shift from more of a manufacturing focus to a consumer focused approach…with those same values in place.

InSight: Would you please complete this sentence: “If I could change just one thing (practice) about this industry it would be:”
…To stop doing things the same way and expecting different results.

InSight: Thanks Tom. We appreciate Mossberg’s membership and commitment to our industry.

About NASGW:<br

Here’s another look….

For the second year in a row, the NASGW Award for Accessory Manufacturer of the Year went to Birchwood Casey.

Acknowledging their commitment to distributors, VP Mike Wenner said “…they’re an extension of us. The GLOCK Model 19 in 9×19 and the G23 in .40 caliber are now offered with the optional Rough Textured Frame (RTF2).

The G19 RTF2 and the G23 RTF2 join the G17 and the G22 as pistol models offered with the new textured grip.

The NASGW is comprised of wholesalers, manufacturers, and independent sales reps – both national and international – all of whom are primarily involved with hunting and shooting sports, equipment and accessories. There are many instances where the environment offers difficult to manage wet and humid conditions. In order to continue providing cutting edge solutions, GLOCK developed the RTF2. The newly designed frame incorporates hundred of “polymids,” or miniature spikes on the front, rear, and sides of the grip resulting in a definite increase in traction.

“GLOCK has heard its valued customers. GLOCK knows it must continue to evolve in order to remain relevant in future markets. These new pistols demonstrate that fact,” commented GLOCK, Inc. Vice President Josh Dorsey. “Additionally, GLOCK will introduce the “next generation” of GLOCK Pistols incorporating our customer’s demands at the upcoming SHOT Show; come visit us at the GLOCK booth.”

The G19 and G23 are two of the most popular GLOCK models. The G19 9×19 compact is widely used all over the world. The money was raised during a raffle at the 2008 Shooting Industry Masters three-gun competition.

Russ Thurman, publisher of FMG Business Magazines and editor of Shooting Industry magazine, presented the check to Steve Sanetti, NSSF president and CEO, during the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers Expo in Atlanta.

“Step Outside is a program that works and one we’re committed to supporting. Its development of new shooters and the reintroduction of inactive shooters is important to the industry, because it translates to increased sales,” Thurman said.

With the 2008 check, FMG has raised nearly $55,000 through the Shooting Industry Masters, with all the money going to Step Outside.

“FMG has been a phenomenally good supporter of the Step Outside program and other NSSF efforts to recruit and retain shooters,” Sanetti said. “Step Outside has been tremendously successful and we thank FMG Publications. They are a great partner and we hope the partnership continues for a long, long time to come.”

Sanetti also challenged executives throughout the industry to take part in the 2009 Shooting Industry Masters.

“I still don’t understand why people who make a living in the manufacture of firearms are not involved in the Shooting Industry Masters,” Sanetti said. “Here’s a chance for a company to showcase not only the products they make, but also the shooting prowess of their executives.

“We’re supposed to be in this industry because we love what we do and, frankly, I think there is a bit of fear on the part of some executives of being shown up. I would challenge them personally to come on out and have a good time in friendly competition with their peers and kind of put up or shut up – to say, ‘Look, I really am a shooter, I really enjoy doing this.’”

Sanetti, who has participated in every Masters event, first as the president of Ruger and then as the head of NSSF, pointed out that, “You don’t have to win anything.”

“You just have to come out on the friendly field of battle, join us and have a great time in the process, and show your support for the NSSF, FMG Publications and the Step Outside program. So, come out and shoot. You’ll have a great time and we’ll see who really are the top guns in our business,” Sanetti said.

For 2009, the Shooting Industry Masters will again be held in Gun Valley at the Hartford Gun Club in East Granby, Conn. The competition, July 24 and 25, has been expanded to accommodate 50 teams.

“Based on the success of the Masters and the tremendous feedback we’ve received, we are expanding the event to two days of shooting and adding some shooting stages,” said Randy Mold, FMG promotions director and Masters chairman. “We want to thank our sponsors and companies who donated products for the raffle. We also invite companies throughout the industry to join us on the firing line for the 2009 competition.”

Details on the 2009 Masters are available at <a

Resting on even well deserved laurels simply isn’t enough to stay ahead of the pack, it seems. That’s why the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW) was proud to honor excellence in the 2008 winners of its prestigious Industry Achievement Awards, at the associations’ recent Annual Expo in Atlanta’s famed Mart Facility.

This year’s NASGW Annual Expo was an exceptional one, commemorating the 35th Anniversary of its Annual Meeting and Events, wherein the association announced the winners of a new and enhanced awards program to honor its outstanding manufacturers. This annual awards program allows the industry’s leading distributors – NASGW wholesaler members – to select and honor the association’s top four manufacturers in several key categories from criteria including two-step distribution policy, partnership with distributors, marketing, promotions and sales, logistics and operations, and NASGW and industry support. The four award categories were: Chairman’s Award for Industry Leadership, Firearms Manufacturer of the Year, Ammunition Manufacturer of the Year and Accessory Manufacturer of the Year.

“It is wonderful to see so many companies striving to continue to set the bar ever higher for achievement. Each winner exemplifies the true meaning of excellence and sets the benchmark for innovation and collaboration between the wholesale members and the manufacturing element in our industry,” says Mike Brown, Chairman of the NASGW Board of Directors. “As always, there were so many exceptional nominees to consider, all of whom contribute profoundly to the future growth of our industry. Receiving a nomination in any one of these categories is a testament to a company’s strong reputation within the industry and among its peers.”

The NASGW Chairman’s Award for Industry Leadership honors went to Glock, a company that has been recognized by its colleagues and partners with this award in 2006 and the Firearms Manufacturer of the Year honors the previous year. Glock has been participating in the new ItemHQ program and has been a staunch supporter of the two-step distribution process for years, treating its wholesale teams as true partners. “Before we implement any new program, we talk to our major distributors to make sure they’re in line with what we’re planning,” says Craig Dutton, Director of Sales for Glock. “We don’t want to do anything to take money out of their pockets – we want to put money in! We want our distributors and our dealers to make as much profit as possible, so we keep a two way stream open line of communication with them, and make sure that we go to great lengths to enforce our MAP (Minimum Advertising Pricing) policies to ensure their profitability. This is an awesome award for us to receive, especially since it’s voted on by our customers. It truly makes it special.”

The Firearms Manufacturer of the Year award was presented to the innovators at Sturm Ruger, & Co., Inc. for the second consecutive year. Perhaps not surprisingly, as Ruger has long been a very visible and vocal proponent of the two-step distribution system. “We are profoundly honored to receive such a prestigious award from the industry two years in a row,” said Ruger CEO Mike Fifer. “Our company has an ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of our customers – our wholesale partners. We would like to thank the NASGW and its members who selected us for this recognition, and appreciate the affirmation of our hard work and innovation in the market.”

Winchester Ammunition, another company that epitomizes the synergy possible in the manufacturer/distributor partnership, was ranked the highest in every category overall and took the coveted Ammunition Manufacturer of the Year award, along with recognition from the NASGW for 35 years of consistent participation in the Expo. “It’s always a surprise and an honor to receive this kind of recognition from your valued customers,” said Brett Flaugher, Vice President Marketing and Sales for Winchester. “We find that there’s no better way to stay connected than through personal communication with our distributor partners, so we maintain close contact via one-on-one contact, through the web, email and other outlets – we stay highly involved in the process to keep lines of communication open both ways.”

Winchester, a company that has been an industry leader since 1866, takes its rightful place as one of the true pioneers in the market and is proud of its strong heritage in our country as a result, while still keeping a close eye on the future and opportunities to excel, such as being 100 percent compliant with NASGW’s new ItemHQ PIMS system. “Our groups of distributors have become very technologically advanced over the last few years, and we’ve embraced that new level of sophistication with them and changed our business model accordingly,” said Flaugher. “Our customers expect new innovations from us – it’s safe to say that new products control our destiny – so we’re constantly working to create products that our customers can sell, and introduce them early enough to facilitate effectively bringing them to market across the board.”

The award for Accessory Manufacturer of the Year went to Birchwood Casey, proudly celebrating its 60th year of doing business, and also recognized as one of the companies that has exhibited at the NASGW show consecutively for all 35 years. “We are very honored to receive this award,” said Michael Wenner, Vice President of the company. “And it’s important to note that this was achieved through the collaboration of our entire team, from the factory, shipping, invoicing and purchasing – they’re the ones that really make it happen.”

There’s a slogan on the wall at Birchwood Casey that sums up the collective attitude of the company: “You are only as good as your team.” According to Wenner, “We truly believe that our distributor partners are a big part of that team, and we try to be progressive, while sticking to the fundamentals: attention to detail, delivering good products at a reasonable price, and staying ahead of the curve.”

For more information about the NASGW, contact the association at PO Box 881525 Port St. Lucie, FL 34988 (772) 621-7162 Or visit the association’s website at <a
