Governor Nathan Deal recently signed a proclamation in honor of the conservation efforts led by America’s hunters and anglers, recognizing Saturday, Sept. 24 as NHF Day in Georgia, noting the plans underway for a statewide celebration.

Events that will be offered in Georgia include seven kids’ fishing events and five Outdoor Adventure Days (activities will differ at each event – but some highlights include archery and air rifle shooting, trout fishing, hunting dog demonstrations, wildlife programs, exhibits and more). These events are spread out across the whole state – meaning that one is probably near you!

In addition to these events, a FREE fishing day is offered to all Georgia residents on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011. On this day, residents do NOT need a fishing license or a trout license to fish on any public waters in the state including lakes, streams, ponds and public fishing areas. In addition, residents do not need to obtain a wildlife management area license to fish on a PFA, WMA or on Waters Creek on this day.

NASHVILLE, T.N.--(Ammoland.com)- Avid outdoorsman Aaron Tippin reflects back to one of his most memorable hunting experiences as we celebrate National Hunting and Fishing day on September 24th, 2011.

It was back in April of this year when he and Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, the host of the number one rated weekend hit show “HUCKABEE” on the Fox News Channel honed in on Tom the Turkey while in Texas.

Joining Huckabee and Tippin on the hunt was one of Huckabee’s sons. If everything’s bigger in Texas then that holds true when it comes to turkeys. All three outdoorsmen hit their mark and harvested a large wild bird.

Tippin and Huckabee work very well together whether it’s hunting turkey or giving back to charity they once again hit their mark. Huckabee and Tippin share several passions one of them is hunting and the other is supporting charitable causes.

West Virginia DNR

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. --(Ammoland.com)- The West Virginia Wildlife Federation and the Division of Natural Resources are seeking hunters who own trophy white-tailed bucks that were legally taken in West Virginia with either bow or gun and have a Pope and Young or Boone and Crockett score of 150 or greater.

The purpose of this search is to establish a West Virginia Big Buck Display at West Virginia’s Celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Day, Sept. 24-25, 2011, at Stonewall Resort State Park near Weston in Lewis County.

This is the largest event held at a West Virginia state park, attracting thousands of visitors annually.

Interested hunters who have qualifying head or antler mounts should contact Keith Krantz at 304-637-0245 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for additional information or a registration form.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.--(Ammoland.com)- More women than men took up hunting last year, according to new net figures from the National Sporting Goods Association.

While total hunters in the U.S. decreased slightly (.05 percent) between 2008 and 2009, the number of female hunters increased by 5.4 percent, netting 163,000 new participants. Growth areas for women included muzzleloading (up 134.6 percent), bowhunting (up 30.7 percent) and hunting with firearms (up 3.5 percent).

Data also show women outpaced men among net newcomers to target shooting with a rifle, where female participation grew by 4.1 percent.

New hunters and shooters are cause for celebration because more participation helps with funding for conservation, according to officials with National Hunting and Fishing Day. Congress established NHF Day, set for Sept. 25, 2010, to recognize America’s sportsmen and women for their leading role in fish, wildlife and habitat conservation (more info at www.nhfday.org).

“New hunters, shooters and anglers are a good thing for everyone who loves the outdoors,” said Denise Wagner of Wonders of Wildlife museum in Springfield, Mo., the official home of NHF Day. “Hunting and fishing license sales, combined with special taxes on firearms and ammunition, bows and arrows, and rods and reels generate about $100,000 every 30 minutes, totaling more than $1.75 billion per year, for conservation. When it comes to funding for wildlife and wild places, more is definitely better.”

The growth in new participation among women, perhaps counter-intuitive to traditionalists, is no surprise to Steve Sanetti, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the shooting, hunting and outdoor industry.

He explained, “Over the past several years, our industry has worked hard to help build this segment of our market. We’ve developed shooting and hunting products especially for women, reached out with welcoming and instructional workshops for women, and encouraged existing hunters and shooters to introduce their spouses, daughters and other newcomers to shooting sports and outdoor lifestyles. I believe these efforts are paying off, which is a bright spot for our industry as well as for conservation.”

Also unsurprised at the number of female hunters and shooters are the women Olympians of the USA Shooting Team, whose ever-increasing visibility has made them effective ambassadors, role models and recruiters of women to traditional outdoor sports.

“Shooting is one of the most fun and empowering things you can teach a young girl or a grown woman,” said Corey Cogdell, 23, a lifelong hunter and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in trap shooting. “Most men are surprised to find out that I am an avid outdoors woman and are often intrigued to learn how they can get females in their own lives involved in hunting and shooting.”

Connie Smotek, 45, a two-time Olympic skeet shooter, bronze medalist in the 2009 World Cup, and avid bird and big-game hunter, added, “Shooting and hunting are activities which a woman can enjoy for a lifetime.”

Cogdell and Smotek are among the many USA Shooting Team members who parlayed early interests in hunting into international success in shooting sports—an opportunity that didn’t exist for women until comparatively recently. Women’s shooting wasn’t officially added as an Olympic sport until 1984 (although U.S. rifle shooter Margaret Murdock won a medal competing against men in the 1976 games). Since then, U.S. women have won 10 Olympic medals in shooting, which is a growing source of pride.

Four of those 10 medals were won in the past four Olympics by Kim Rhode, a double-trap and skeet shooter now among the most elite and enduring athletes in all of sports.

National Shotgun Coach Bret Erickson agrees.

“Most members of our shooting team grew up hunting and fishing,” said Erickson, himself a four-time Olympian and lifelong hunter and angler from Bennington, Neb. “Nobody starts hunting because they want to go to the Olympics, but it helps. The skills learned in hunting and, to a lesser degree, fishing—safety and comfort with firearms, basic shooting mechanics, patience, controlling emotions, concentration, ability to focus for long periods, persistence—can translate directly to competitive shooting.”

Erickson explained, “In many countries, Italy for example, shotgun shooting is a premier sport. Everyone shoots. Our athletes typically haven’t had as much time in their sport. Our training budgets are often smaller. And yet, in shotgun events, the U.S. remains among the top one or two countries in the world.”

He added, “Most nations don’t enjoy the broad freedoms to hunt like we do in the U.S., and that unique tradition and rural lifestyle produce much of our talent. Hunters have always been a reservoir of natural shooting abilities that America has relied on and successfully developed for Olympic competition.”

Here are three reasons for the American public to value hunting and fishing today:

Economic Impact
No bailouts needed here. Hunting and angling together are an economic force worth $76 billion a year. In 2010, America’s economic stimulus package will generate its highest level of federal spending at $236 billion—but hunters and anglers will spend almost a third of that amount all by themselves. A Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation report shows if hunters and anglers were a nation, their Gross Domestic Product would rank 57 out of 181 countries. About 1.6 million jobs depend on hunters and anglers. Gas stations, stores, restaurants, hotels and other businesses benefit, especially in rural America. And these recreations are comparatively recession proof. In the first half of 2009, hunting and fishing license sales actually gained 7.6 and 5.4 percent, respectively, over 2008, say the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation.

Wildlife Management
Rabies, crop damages, nuisances. Hunting helps control these wildlife issues and many others—none more dramatic than highway accidents involving deer. White-tailed deer once were on the verge of extinction but rebounded behind historic conservation efforts. Today, deer numbers are skyrocketing. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates 1.5 million deer collisions occur each year. Over 200 people are killed annually. According to a Western Transportation Institute calculation that includes costs of emergency response, injuries to driver and passengers, damages to vehicle and more, the 2009 average cost of hitting a deer is $6,600. Total public cost: $9.9 billion a year. Now consider that, nationwide, for every deer hit by a motorist, hunters take six. Imagine the human casualties and costs if hunting ended.

Conservation Funding
What if Congress announced a tax increase to cover $2 billion in annual expenses for conservation programs? Don’t worry. Hunters and anglers are already paying that tab. For the privilege of consuming surplus, renewable game and fish resources, hunters and anglers purchase licenses. They also pay special excise taxes on firearms, ammunition, bows, arrows, rods and reels. Combined, these fees generate $100,000 every 30 minutes, more than $1.75 billion per year, for wildlife, fisheries and habitat programs. Hunters and anglers also contribute another $300 million a year to nonprofit organizations that extend conservation benefits even further. Results have brought many species—turkey, elk pronghorn, Canada goose, wood duck and others—and their habitats from vanishing to flourishing. These efforts enabled restoration of other species such as wolves. America’s living landscape is a precious asset for all citizens who enjoy wildlife and wild places.

“We are proud to bring back the outstanding archery showman Byron Ferguson,” stated Event Coordinator Jerry Westfall. “Byron is an unparalleled archery talent whose performances leave audiences across the nation speechless.”

In addition, residents do not need to obtain a wildlife management area (WMA) license to fish on a PFA, WMA or on Waters Creek on this day.

West Virginia State Parks

Lewis County, WV - -(AmmoLand.com)- Changes in the format of the annual Outdoor Youth Challenge will allow more participation from youngsters to test their skills in hunting, fishing, and other activities, according to Division of Natural Resources Director Frank Jezioro. The Outdoor Youth Challenge is part of West Virginia’s Celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Days, scheduled for September 26 and 27 at Stonewall Resort State Park in Lewis County.

“This celebration is one of the best outdoor recreation events held in West Virginia, with hands-on learning and instructional opportunities for youth and the entire family in celebrating West Virginia’s wildlife and outdoor heritage,” said Jezioro.

A major change instituted last year and continuing this year involves removing the competition factor in all the Outdoor Youth Challenge events, unless a youth requests to be competitively scored. Last year the result was more than 350 youngsters over the two-day weekend participating in approximately 20 different events, up substantially from previous years.

Any youth between 6 and 18 years of age may participate in the Outdoor Youth Challenge events. However, those youths 11-18 years of age who would like to compete will still be able to do so, with five scored competitive events which include casting for accuracy, archery, .22 rifle, muzzleloader and skeet shooting.

All youths who wish to participate must complete a free, on-site registration. They will be given a color-coded registration card with map showing the Outdoor Youth Challenge events. The Outdoor Youth Challenge will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. There will be approximately 25 events and each youth must complete at least 10 events to be eligible for prize drawings. Upon completion of each event, the youth’s registration card will be validated by the official overseeing that event.

Two types of registration will be offered for the Outdoor Youth Challenge. The first will be for those youths 6 to 18 years of age who would like to participate in the Youth Challenge event just for the fun and experience, but do not wish to compete. The second type of registration will be for youths 11-14 and 15-18 years of age who wish to compete in the scored events. The numerical score for the five scored competitive events will be recorded on the youth’s registration card. These youths, in addition to completing the scored events, must also complete at least five of the un-scored Youth Challenge events.

Again this year, the grand prizes are two lifetime hunting and fishing licenses. For those youths who want to compete in the five scored competitive events, a Junior Conservation Camp Scholarship (junior group ages 11-14) and a state Conservation Camp Scholarship (senior group ages 15-18) will be awarded each day. Many other quality prizes, dealing with hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreation activities, will also be given away each day.

Hunters and anglers were the first to recognize that rapid development and unregulated use of wildlife was a serious threat to the future of many species. They called for the first laws restricting the commercial slaughter of wildlife.

They urged sustainable use of fish and game, created hunting and fishing licenses, and lobbied for taxes on sporting equipment to provide funds for state conservation agencies. These actions were the foundation of the North American wildlife conservation model, a science-based, user-pay system that would foster the most dramatic conservation successes of all time.

The festival is an invitation to the public to experience and learn about activities associated with the hunter and angler heritage and the protection, management and wise use of our fish and wildlife resource.

This year’s event will feature fish and wildlife research and management exhibits and presentations, wildlife artists, taxidermists, conservation organization exhibits, archery and shotgun ranges, a Sportsmen’s Flea market and the opportunity for children to fish at the Pequest fishing education pond. An Introduction to Kayaking course will also be offered this year, as will a Hunter Education course for prospective hunters.

On May 2, 1972, President Richard Nixon signed the first proclamation of National Hunting and Fishing Day, saying he urged “all citizens to join with outdoor sportsmen in the wise use of our natural resources and insuring their proper management for the benefit of future generations.”

By late summer, all 50 governors and more than 600 mayors had proclaimed their versions of National Hunting and Fishing Day. In the end, more than 3000 hunting- and fishing-related events were held, providing an estimated 4 million people with an opportunity to experience or learn about America’s outdoors traditions.

“It’s very important that the general public understand the critical role sportsmen and women played-and play-as stewards and guardians of our natural resources so that generations to come can hunt and fish and enjoy the outdoors,” said Devney. “For decades, hunters and anglers have worked countless hours to preserve and improve countless acres of vital habitat-land and waters that, of course, have benefitted everyone. That’s why a special day like this devoted to raising awareness is so important.”

Still, Devney is worried. He says conservation’s primary funding sources-hunters and anglers-are, for a variety reasons, leaving the heritage. Devney said waterfowl hunters in particular are an ominous case in point: According to the 2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, waterfowl hunter numbers from 2001 to 2006 plunged 27 percent.

“As a research organization, we looked at those disturbing losses and decided to investigate, and what we came up with was a five-part series in our magazine called the Vanishing Hunter that documented the demographic and social issues contributing to the loss of hunters nationwide,” said Devney. “What we learned, in part, is that the first step to securing the future of hunting is reconnecting with the culture-those ancient roots that keep our traditions alive.

Devney says the research has helped improve Delta’s comprehensive mentored hunt program. “We’ve always targeted youths to address the long-term issues of hunter recruitment, but now we’re reaching out to university students, women and families, and the reception has been tremendous,” said Devney, noting that Delta’s mentored hunts are unique because they incorporate hunter education, conservation education, skills training, game preparation and eating. “By immersing youths and adults, men and women into all aspects of our waterfowling culture, we believe they will become lifelong hunters and conservationists.”

Indeed, reversing hunter and angler loses is critical to the long-term future of conservation, notes Denise Wagner, program coordinator for National Hunting and Fishing Day. Through licenses, permits, and special taxes on hunting and fishing equipment, hunters and anglers generate $100,000 every 30 minutes-totaling more than $1.75 billion per year-for fish, wildlife and habitat, she said.

National Shooting Sports Foundation

NEWTOWN, Conn. –-(AmmoLand.com)- The Obama campaign in Indiana, on September 27, unlawfully obtained and made unauthorized use of a proprietary media list belonging to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) – the trade association for the firearms industry.

Sen. Obama used this list to e-mail a press release concerning National Hunting and Fishing Day.

Earlier today, NSSF sent a “cease and desist” letter to the Obama campaign demanding that they immediately stop any further unauthorized misuse of its proprietary media list.

The list contains the names and addresses of members of the media that attended the NSSF Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show) – the world’s largest firearms trade show and the 23rd largest trade show of any kind in North America.

The list can only be obtained from NSSF and its use is tightly controlled by NSSF. Neither the Obama campaign, nor its operations in Indiana, obtained any rights from NSSF to use the list.

NSSF’s letter also demands that the Obama campaign destroy all copies of the list, identify how they obtained the list and pay monetary damages to NSSF for its misappropriation and unauthorized use of the association’s intellectual property. NSSF demanded an immediate response from the Obama campaign and has threatened to file a lawsuit against the campaign if its demands are not met.

“NSSF will not sit idly by while its legal rights are harmed, particularly for partisan political gain,” said NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane.

NSSF is also encouraging all sportsmen and gun-owners to visit the NSSF Voter Education Web-site and educate themselves about the candidates’ records and positions on issues important to them in this election.
