class="wp-caption-text">ShootLikeAGirl.com

ELKMONT, AL --(Ammoland.com)- Shoot Like A Girl is proud to announce that Karen Butler, Founder and President of Shoot Like A girl has been named by Outdoor Life as one of the OL 25: Leaders in Hunting, Fishing and Conservation for her vision to get more women involved in shooting sports.

“I was shocked when I got the news, it was surreal to realize that the industry recognizes what we are trying to do, and values it too. I am truly honored to be listed with the other esteemed awardees”, said Butler.

Shoot Like A Girl has been operating for three years and encourages more women to be involved in shooting sports. Their mission is to “empower women to participate in shooting sports with confidence.”

With the help of Corporate Sponsors, they travel around the country and introduce women to archery, actually shooting a bow, in a safe controlled environment. To date, they have had over 1500 women participate Test Flights, with 40% of those ladies being first time shooters.

“It is incredible when we get new shooters in the booth, and at first they are apprehensive about shooting, but after a few minutes of education and safety tips, they shoot the bow, and their faces light up, and the next thing out of their mouth is, “Can I do it again!”” stated Butler.

Butler, her husband and staff love to chat with the husbands, boyfriends and dads who are equally excited to see the “ah ha” moment women get when provided the opportunity to shoot a bow that fits them in a draw weight they can pull back on their own.

Butler advocates shooting sports for women because it provides women with quality time with their families, exercise benefits and the instant gratification of hitting the target. The benefit to the industry is new consumer growth, 99% of women who complete the Test Flight survey say they will buy or have bought a bow. Karen also promotes hunting as a choice women can make, which helps protect the future of hunting. The National Shooting Sports Federation stated in their “Future of Hunting and the Shooting Sports” that we increase the number of hunters when Mothers shoot; their statistics show that when moms hunt, 64% of sons hunt; and 50% of daughters; compared to only 46% of sons and 13% of daughters when only fathers hunt.

Butler appreciates the recognition by Outdoor Life, but also attributes Shoot Like A Girl’s success to their corporate sponsors: Hunter Safety System, Prois, Limbsaver, Mathews Inc, Bohning, Haley Vines Outdoor Collection, Muzzy Products Corp, Gerbing’s Heated Clothing, Game Plan Gear, Hoyt, BowTech, Target Communications, and the Archery Shooters Association. These sponsors have embraced Shoot Like A Girl’s vision. They share the commitment to empower women to participate in shooting sports with confidence. Butler states that they are always recruiting new corporate sponsors so Shoot Like A Girl can reach even more women.

To read the write up on Karen Butler in Outdoor Life visit www.outdoorlife.com/ol25, it is number 21 of 25. title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- “Outdoor Life” magazine has included the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation on a list of those making significant positive impacts on hunting and fishing.

The fifth annual “OL 25″ list for 2011 includes RMEF President and CEO David Allen and RMEF past board member Dr. Valerius Geist. Profiles on both, as well as 23 others on the list, are in the magazine’s December/January edition. Profiles also can be viewed online at www.outdoorlife.com.

An introductory graph from “Outdoor Life” editors says, “While these 25 men and women have different backgrounds and accomplishments, they all have one thing in common: they’ve spent their life working to better hunting, fishing and conservation.”

RMEF in October recorded its 6 millionth acre of habitat conserved or enhanced for elk and other wildlife. This accomplishment, in addition to the “OL 25″ list, is highlighted on the “Outdoor Life” website and latest electronic newsletter. Visit www.outdoorlife.com for a photo gallery of a few RMEF projects completed along the way to the 6 million-acre landmark.

Allen says credit for RMEF’s accomplishments belongs to the organization’s volunteers, members and staff.

“We have some of the greatest folks in wildlife conservation, and it’s a special moment for our team and our cumulative effort to be recognized by one of the oldest and most respected voices in the outdoors,” he said.

The “OL 25″ list is composed of five sub-categories: Leaders, Conservationists, Unsung Heroes, Innovators and Helping Hands. Allen and Geist are both named in the “Leaders” category.

“Outdoor Life” Executive Editor Andrew McKean said, “David Allen has transformed RMEF into one of America’s most effective conservation organizations. His commitment to public hunting, landscape-scale habitat conservation and restoration of elk to their historic range benefits all hunters, no matter where they live and no matter what species they hunt.”

RMEF founders Charlie Decker and Bob Munson made the “OL 25″ list in 2009, and others with RMEF ties have been named through the years.

About the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation:
RMEF is leading a conservation initiative that has protected or enhanced habitat on over 6 million acres–an area larger than Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Yosemite, Rocky Mountain and Great Smoky Mountains national parks combined. RMEF also is a strong voice for hunters in access, wildlife management and conservation policy issues. RMEF members, partners and volunteers, working together as Team Elk, are making a difference all across elk country. Join us at www.rmef.org or 800-CALL ELK.
Tags: Ammoland.com)- In just a few months, Blind Side ammunition from Winchester will be taking down ducks and geese all over North America.

For now, the company’s most innovative waterfowl load is busy taking down prestigious awards.

Just days after being named “Top Choice” for duck hunting by Field and Stream magazine, Blind Side waterfowl ammo has been named “Editor’s Choice” as the top overall ammo in the 2011 “Ammo of the Year” awards from Outdoor Life.

The awards cover four ammunition categories: shotgun, centerfire rifle, handgun and rimfire. One round is chosen as the “Ammo of the Year” in each category and the overall winner is declared “Editor’s Choice.” Blind Side won the shotgun category and the top overall title. Winchester Varmint LF in .17 HMR also won the rimfire category, making Winchester Ammunition the only manufacturer to win multiple categories.

“We’re extremely honored with the accolades Blind Side and Varmint LF have received from Field and Stream and Outdoor Life,” said Brett Flaugher, Winchester Ammunition vice president of marketing and sales. “We’re confident that everyone will be impressed by how effective and lethal Blind Side is on ducks and geese, and for varmint hunters, we think our Varmint LF load is the best lead-free round you can buy for .17 HMR.”

Blind Side ammunition combines ground-breaking, stacked HEX Shot technology and the new Diamond Cut™ Wad in the most deadly Winchester waterfowl load available. The HEX Shot pellets, shaped much like dice, literally stack together inside the shell, resulting in up to 15 percent more pellets in every shell.

Loaded with 100 percent HEX Shot, hunters get more pellets on target, a larger kill zone and more trauma inducing pellets than ever before – meaning quick kill shots. The shot is designed to hit waterfowl like high-velocity tumbling bricks – preventing over penetration and maximizing energy deposit and knock-down shock within the bird.

The new .17 HMR Varmint LF load by Winchester Ammunition features a 15.5 grain bullet designed with a Polymer Tip for ultra-flat trajectories and delivers a blistering 2550 fps velocity. The Varmint LF uses a non-corrosive primer and clean burning powder to generate a sure-fire ignition every time.

With a company heritage dating back to 1866, Winchester Ammunition was there for the taming of the American West, the Allied Forces’ victory in World War II and through the years, millions of fond memories made in the great outdoors. Known as The American Legend, Winchester is a global leader in sporting, law enforcement, military and personal defense ammunition production. Winchester continues to raise the bar with new products like Blind Side waterfowl and PDX1 Defender personal defense ammunition.

For more information about Winchester Ammunition, visit www.winchester.com, or connect with The American Legend on Facebook at Facebook.com/WinchesterAmmunition.
Tags: Letters to the AmmoLand Editor: Got something on your mind? Let us know and you can see it here.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- Dear Mr. Snow:

Your recent review posted at www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/gun-shots/2011/04/strange-guns-palm-pistol is highly critical of my design. The single shot Palm Pistol(r) has several advantages over a traditionally configured defensive handgun.

1. Most defensive uses of handguns take place within extremely close range, often less than five feet. A single well placed shot at point blank or close range to a vital area can have more “stopping power” (an ill-defined and often misapplied concept) than a series of shots some of which undoubtedly will miss and potentially injure an unintended target. As I often state, a .22 caliber hit has more stopping power than a .45 caliber miss.

2. Revolvers and semi-automatics have externally moving parts (cylinders, hammers and slides). These can potentially hang up on clothing if an attempt is made to fire them from within clothing or a pocket. The Palm Pistol has no such disadvantage and does not require a pocket holster. 3. Seniors or disabled can be physically weak and easily overpowered by an attacker. A multi-shot firearm can be taken from the defender and used against them. A single shot gun would eliminate that concern. If coupled with use of the multiple projectile Tri-Plex(tm) cartridge I designed which produces up to 49% larger ballistic wound than a JHP (see www.palmpistol.com/triplex.html) and with less recoil, the ostensible single shot disadvantage is overcome. It is also very fast to reload with practice.

4. I have had several senior and disabled students who lacked the physical strength or ability to rack the slide on even a Walther P22 and certainly could not load cartridges into a magazine, even assisted by speed loader. If someone is missing an index finger on their dominant hand, how would you propose they fire a traditional handgun? I know you do not mean to suggest these handicapped defenseless people should not be afforded a useful tool to defend themselves.

5. The Palm Pistol(r) bore centerline is coincident with that of the forearm resulting in not just a low bore axis, but a zero bore axis. I have personally fired the prototype and there is no muzzle rise due to recoil. This makes it easier and more comfortable for those with muscular weakness to fire it.

6. There is no reason the Palm Pistol needs to “look like a gun”. If, God forbid, a person needs to draw their firearm in self-defense, it must by law only be when threatened with imminent deadly harm. If you have time for brandishing or a warning shot, the prosecutor will argue (and very likely successfully) the threat was not imminent. As the saying goes “act in haste, repent at leisure.” When ANY gun is drawn, it had better be because your life is in immediate danger, and in that case, who cares what it looks like?

There are many other arguments to be made in favor of my design, but to conclude, I have received literally thousands of emails from seniors and disabled all over the world thanking me for designing a product specially tailored to their needs. A 17 page compilation of just some of their comments is posted at www.palmpistol.com/links/WhatPeopleAreSaying.pdf.

Palm Pistol – What People Are Saying

I also have over 300 units presold with deposits and over 2100 individuals who have registered for more information when the firearm is on the market. I also have had many inquiries from law enforcement who see utility as a highly concealable and ambidextrous backup gun for thwarting a gun grab.

The Palm Pistol(r) and seniors with guns have been the butt of ignorant jokes by many including Jay Leno (The Tonight Show) and Greg Gutfeld (Fox Red Eye) and others.

With luck and continued perseverance, I hope to be laughing all the way to the bank, in spite of the naysayers.

Respectfully,

Matt Carmel
Tags: Nikon Hunting

Melville, NY --(Ammoland.com)- Andrew McKean, Hunting Editor for Outdoor Life magazine, has been honored with the 2010 Ian McMurchy Award.

This award is given annually to one outdoor communicator who best follows in McMurchy’s footsteps of educating readers and helping them discover more enjoyment and success in their sport during the past year.

“The Ian McMurchy award is very, very special to all of us in the Nikon family and as such we take great care in picking the recipient each year,” said Jon LaCorte, senior product marketing manager Nikon Sport Optics. “We believe Ian would be proud that Andrew McKean of Outdoor Life has been selected for this year’s award.”

Ian McMurchy was a huge force in educating and entertaining shooters and hunters around the world while teaching them how to enjoy their passion even more. Andrew McKean carries that tradition forward through his print and online work. Nikon is thrilled to present him with this year’s Ian McMurchy award.

“I’m flattered to have my name associated with that of Ian McMurchy. Ian was a hero to me: a talented writer, a remarkable rifleman, a working biologist and a lifelong educator, teaching people about wild places and the animals that live there,” said McKean. “I’m happy that Nikon is keeping Ian’s memory alive with this award, and I’m proud to join what I expect will be a long roster of worthy recipients.”

Unfortunately for his family, friends and countless readers, Ian passed away in December of 2008. Known as much for his shooting skill as his hunting ability, he loved every minute spent in the outdoors. Having introduced hundreds of people to shooting more accurately and hunting more successfully, Ian will be long remembered.

Nikon Inc. is the U.S. distributor of Nikon sports and recreational optics, world-renowned Nikon 35mm cameras, digital cameras, speedlights and accessories, Nikkor lenses and electronic imaging products.

For more information on Nikon’s full line of Riflescopes, Binoculars, Spotting Scopes, Fieldscopes and Laser Rangefinders, please contact: Nikon Sport Optics, 1300 Walt Whitman Rd., Melville, NY 11747-3064, or call 1-800-645-6687. <a

Howard continues to go beyond the call of duty for the outdoors.”

Robinson has served as a local field director (LFD) for the USSA for years, been the vice president of the Old Fort Gun Club and an officer for the Arkansas Trappers Association. He initially was included in the prestigious Outdoor Life 25 for 2010. In its third year, the program “honors 25 men and women who have changed the face of hunting and fishing.”

The list is made up of volunteers, product developers, wildlife managers and other advocates who are listed in several different categories including: Conservationists, Innovators, Leaders and Unsung Heroes. Robinson was placed in the Unsung Hero category due to his tireless advocacy and education efforts on behalf of sportsmen. Readers were then given a voice to select the individual they felt most deserving of the “People’s Choice Award” by voting online through the end of 2009.

The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance is a national association of sportsmen and sportsmen’s organizations that protects the rights of hunters, anglers and trappers in the courts, legislatures, at the ballot, in Congress and through public education programs. Baier of Bethesda, Md., is among several stalwart big-game conservationists named to Outdoor Life’s list of 25 people who’ve had the greatest positive impact on hunting, fishing and conservation.

Today the Club congratulated all of the selectees, especially those who’ve had a hand in North America’s unprecedented success in restoring and managing big game populations.

“Whether you hunt whitetails in the East, bighorns out West, caribou up North or grizzly bears in Alaska, you’re part of a conservation model unlike any other in the world. True, the public may never understand the debt it owes to hunters. But even we hunters tend to think of our greatest accomplishments in the past tense, when in fact our successes are continuing all around us. We’re grateful to Outdoor Life for shining a light on some of these great stories,” said Tony Schoonen, chief of staff for Boone and Crockett Club.

Notable big-game conservationists on the OL 25 list include:

Lowell E. Baier
As the 28th president of the Club started by Theodore Roosevelt in 1887, Baier is part of a long tradition in conservation. Boone and Crockett trophy records have always been a gauge of wildlife habitat and management programs, but Baier has focused organizational efforts directly on the land. “For me, it’s about the habitat as much as the hunt,” he says. Baier led a campaign to conserve Roosevelt’s Elkhorn Ranch in North Dakota, a monster effort that landed him honors as the 2008 Conservationist of the Year by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and 2008 Conservationist of the Year by Budweiser. He also is a charter founder of the Wild Sheep Foundation.

Senator Jon Tester
Crafted the landmark “Forest Jobs and Recreation Act” affecting some 600,000 acres of Montana backcountry lost for 25 years in a bureaucratic land-use stalemate. The act preserves some Montana lands as wilderness yet requires sustainable timber harvest on much of the rest. Hunters can access these lands, watersheds will be preserved and unemployed loggers and mill workers will go back to work.

Tom Fruechtel
As president and CEO of Oregon-based Leupold & Stevens, Fruechtel leads a product-licensing program that raises significant funding for Boone and Crockett Club conservation and education efforts. He also leads by example to help his industry become more accessible to young people, and he volunteers for organizations that promote conservation and shooting sports.

Bob Munson and Charlie Decker
Both are primary founders of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, one of the nation’s most effective wildlife conservation organizations, with more than 150,000 members in 500 chapters across the country. The outfit has conserved and enhanced more than 5.6 million acres of wildlife habitat and helped restore elk to historic range across the nation.

Karl Malone
A former NBA star who now devotes his time, energy and resources to advancing wildlife conservation and youth hunting programs. His contributions have provided access for hunters, habitat for bighorn sheep, mule deer and elk, and outdoor gear for underprivileged kids. In addition, Malone founded the Hunts for Heroes program, which sponsors all-expenses-paid hunts for soldiers, firefighters and police.

Coni and Randy Brooks
Their Utah-based company, Barnes Bullets, became one of the foremost bullet makers in the country with the invention of the X Bullet, a unique, all-copper bullet with no lead core. But their innovation is matched by their devotion to conservation, with volunteer service and leadership on the Utah Wildlife Board, Utah Safari Club and Sportsmen for Fish & Wildlife.

Photos and bios of all 25 selectees appear in the December/January 2010 edition of Outdoor Life.

Online voting for fan favorites lasts through late December at www.outdoorlife.com.

About the Boone and Crockett Club<br

Outdoor Life’s new print look will hit newsstands this week with the February issue. This print design follows closely on the heels of the announcement earlier this week of the launch of the brand’s redesigned website, www.OutdoorLife.com.

“Outdoor Life has thrived for more than a century because we’ve remained dedicated to delivering the best content in the most innovative and entertaining format,” says Todd Smith, Editor-in-Chief of Outdoor Life. “Our readers invest their time and trust in us, and we wanted to repay that by investing in and improving the products they love.”

The new print design, spearheaded by Smith and his staff, took more than a year to implement from inception to completion. The process involved a complete reimagining of magazine’s layout that resulted in the introduction of four new front-of-the-book sections: Hunting, Fishing, Shooting and Gear. The new look offers a cleaner, sharper design as well as a new graphics package that showcases more of the eye-catching outdoor images the magazine is famous for.

According to Smith, the new sections will give the magazine greater flexibility in the types of stories they run. “Readers will still find all the gear, survival, and hunting and fishing adventure stories they love in Outdoor Life,” says Smith, “but now we’ll be covering even more of the great outdoor world they love. In the February issue we cover hunting dogs, wild-game recipes, the best Hollywood shootouts, interviews with outdoor heroes and more. And with each issue and according to the season, the topics we include in these four sections will change.”

Titled “The Predator Issue” the February issue of Outdoor Life includes three feature stories highlighting coyotes, cougars and Alaskan grizzlies, continuing the magazine’s tradition of delivering original photography coupled with in-depth and entertaining coverage. “Cat Men” profiles a tight-knit group of young mountain-lion hunters who embody the spirit of the 21st-century mountain man; “Grizzly Country” chronicles the adventures of a Virginia country-boy who travels to Alaska in search of the world’s greatest game; and “The Howling” offers a glimpse into the world of coyotes.

Earlier this week Outdoor Life announced the official relaunch of its online home, <a

The newly designed website offers online users a daily updated dose of outdoor entertainment, news, advice and tips. In addition to new hunting and fishing video galleries, the site also offers users the ability to create unique online profiles and participate in and lead outdoor discussions.

“We’ve had great feedback from our online community,’ says Smith. “In fact the only complaint we’ve gotten is that the site is too good. Apparently it’s a bit harder for some people to tear themselves away now.”

About:<br
