It covers shootin’ stuff, loud noises, defending your own, the occasional mall ninja, and about 200 years of the American way. These are the (partially) true stories of My Gun Culture says Tom. class="wp-caption-text">AmmoLand Gun News

Manasquan, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- I’m always so excited when I get to pick up a new gun.

I look at my new purchase in awe thinking, “Wow, this is MINE”.

This time the newest member of the family was a Mossberg 510 mini shotgun. It’s my first shotgun and it will be perfect for me and to teach my kids with as well. As I look at it, all I can think about is taking it to the range, but it’s about ten o’clock at night now and the range won’t be open until 10 am tomorrow.

It’s exactly this feeling that I want to see other female firearms owners experience. What I have seen after taking women to the range and speaking with others is that some women have a tendency to hold back on how they feel about owning and shooting guns (at least in this part of the USA). It’s almost like they feel they don’t have the right to really own one or a place in that world – I don’t know why, but I imagine that it has something to do with shooting not being a “feminine” activity. That it’s not OK to express an interest in things that are loud and make really big holes in the target. But after speaking with the women who have come shooting with me, I learned they quickly realize how empowering and fun it can be, too.

The days of the quiet, polite female who takes a back seat in a man’s world are long since gone, but society’s stereotypes die hard and there are still those who might view certain sports and activities as masculine. I wasn’t raised this way, in fact, in my family all the kids were treated equally regardless of gender. My brother took his turn washing the dishes and cooking dinner, and my sisters and I put in our time mowing the lawn and helping my father with projects in the garage. My parents always told my four sisters and me that we could do anything we wanted, and they stood behind us all the way. I never would have thought I couldn’t own, handle, or even build guns if I put my mind to it and wanted it badly enough. It took me a while to realize that not everyone is as fortunate as we were.

I find it interesting to read about strong women who stand out and do things that are not considered “ladylike”.

Women's Competitive Shooter Athena Lee of Katy, Texas

For example, on July 4th, I read the story of Sonya Thomas, who at 5 feet and 105 pounds has become a competitive eating champion. She gets up in front of crowds of spectators and beats her male competitors time and time again, often to the jeers of the audience and sometimes with a barrage of garbage raining down on her. Say what you will about the gross out factor of competitive eating, the fact that Sonya walked into a stadium full of Philly fans to compete in the 2005 Wing Bowl where she was touted by the crowd as the “feminist villain” shows that she has a confidence that is admirable.

This past July 4th she won the annual Nathan’s hotdog eating contest in the newly created women’s division.

And then you have someone like Bonnie, a 70 year old grandmother who found a man had broken into her New Hampshire home undressed, and was sitting at her kitchen table eating a meal from her refrigerator. She was rightly concerned about the safety of her grandson asleep upstairs and grabbed a bat and starting beating the man until he left the house. Bonnie told the media, “I don’t want anyone to ever think they can hurt my family and get away with it. You have got to take care of yourself,” she says, “You’re not weak, be strong. There’s always a way to protect yourself. Use it.” Exactly. Now that is a woman who has confidence in herself, and it showcases that no one should ever feel the need to hold back when protecting themselves – male or female.

These are two different women, who feel comfortable enough with themselves to act outside what can be considered acceptable for women in our society. They are two women who are not afraid to draw on the confidence they feel inside themselves and do what feels right for them. I understand it can be hard to walk into male dominated environments, like a gun shop or shooting range, especially alone. This is one of the reasons I decided to become a firearms instructor. I enjoy introducing students, and especially women, to the world of firearms.

Once women make the decision to go for it and enter the range, I find many are afraid to handle the gun because of a fear they might break it. So they handle it gently, like it’s fragile or irreplaceable. Don’t be afraid to handle your gun roughly ladies! (By this I mean don’t pick it up like you would a newborn infant). A 9mm handgun can withstand twenty five thousand pounds of blow back pressure (psi) when you pull the trigger; believe me, even if you are at the gym every day, you can’t duplicate that kind of power. It’s actually better not to assist or baby your gun when chambering a round. Rack the slide and let it fly forward. Really get to know your firearm, touch everything on it and know how it works! Please be safe though and follow all safe gun handling rules including making sure it’s unloaded first. The gun is just a tool to get the job done, it’s no different than many other tools you will use on a daily basis. And it’s your tool. Whether your goal is to send some rounds down range at a piece of paper for fun or to gain some experience in order to keep a gun for self defense, like any other tool you own, knowing intimately how it works will allow it to work best for you.

It doesn’t matter if you want to shoot in pink earmuffs, or you buy a rifle DuraCoated in a purple camouflage pattern – in fact, bedazzle your gun case if you like, because it only matters how you feel inside about shooting your gun. You are just as capable and probably more responsible, than the guy in the next port. Don’t assume he knows any more than you do. Don’t misunderstand; my goal is only to encourage women to have confidence in their own ability to handle a gun. I have been the recipient of much encouragement and support of male instructors and gun owners.

I look at shooting as my time to relax so I often enjoy shooting alone. It’s at least as good as a visit to the spa. I have to clear my mind and turn off my phone to concentrate on what I am doing, especially if I want to shoot well. But I know that sometimes it’s easier to go with a friend.

My favorite experience was taking a friend to shoot who was sure she just would not be able to do it. Yes, of course she thought it was great that I could but there was no reasoning with her. It was too complicated, too much recoil, too much unfounded fear that she could never protect herself – that it wasn’t her job, her right, her responsibility to do so. After she fired the handguns, and very well I might add, I convinced her to shoot the AR-15. After the first round, she just paused and then looked at me.

“Wow,” she said, “that felt great. I can do this. I feel so empowered.” Hello, and welcome to my world. Remember ladies, it’s your gun, don’t be afraid of it. Own it.

Tags: <a

EDGEFIELD, S.C. --(Ammoland.com)- The Michaux-Yellow Breeches and Shippensburg Strutters chapters of the National Wild Turkey Federation will host a “Women in the Outdoors” event on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops in Harrisburg.
Pre-registration is required for this event. Registration can be done by going to www.womenintheoutdoors.org, and then clicking on “PA WITO Event Manager Calendar” and then searching the calendar.
A beneficial partnership between the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Pennsylvania Game Commission helps provide outdoor opportunities such as this to women in the Keystone State. The Pennsylvania Game Commission recognizes a high interest level in the outdoors among women in the state and wants to provide more opportunities to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle.
Since 1998, the NWTF’s Women in the Outdoors program has organized events designed especially for women. By providing expert instruction and hands-on education, the NWTF helps members develop outdoor skills and emphasizes the importance of wildlife management and the role of hunters in conservation.
“Our program is about encouraging women to try new outdoor activities in a safe environment that makes them feel at ease,” said Brenda Valentine, NWTF Spokeswoman, First Lady of Hunting™ and host of the NWTF’s “Turkey Call” TV show airing on Pursuit Channel, and Bass Pro Shops’ “Real Hunting” TV show. “This event is also an opportunity for women of all walks of life – singles, moms, daughters, young and old – to spend a day outdoors, away from home, having fun and making new friends.”
The combination of sponsorship, such as the Game Commission and local chapter support, allows the NWTF to offer these programs at a low cost to participants. The cost of attending each event includes a subscription to Turkey Country, the NWTF’s full-color publication. Turkey County includes stories about the Women in the Outdoors, JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship), Wheelin’ Sportsmen, NWTF outreach programs, conservation issues, turkey calling and hunting, education programs and much more.
“The Women in the Outdoors program allows the NWTF to reach an entirely new audience, one that has the potential to benefit conservation efforts,” Valentine said. “It’s an opportunity for women to find great satisfaction and enjoyment in the outdoors.”
For more information about the event, contact Melissa Henry at 717-226-1520. For more information about the NWTF visit www.nwtf.org or call (800) THE-NWTF.

class="wp-caption-text">Missouri Department of Conservation

JEFFERSON CITY Mo --(Ammoland.com)- Some things are better when shared. The Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) recent Discover Nature Women summer workshop showed that nature is one of those things.

With the program’s highest attendance ever, more than 130 women participated in the 2011 event held at Windermere Conference Center in Roach, Mo., June 3-5. Some attended to gain valuable outdoor experience, some to spend a weekend with friends and family and others to make a grandmother-mother-daughter getaway.

“Discover Nature Women (DNW) provides a safe and friendly environment where women experience hands-on outdoor skills training at the beginner level, taught by a team of longtime professionals,” said MDC Education Programs Supervisor Kevin Lohraff.

Courses include fishing, basic hunting, an introduction to firearms, archery, shotgun shooting, camping, canoeing, map and compass reading, fly tying and Dutch-oven cooking. DNW offers a two-year program that allows participants to complete four courses each year for a total of eight core courses. The weekend is targeted to women 18 years and older, along with young women age 14-17 when accompanied by a woman 18 years or older.

“Not everyone has a chance to learn these outdoor activities or someone who can teach them,” Lohraff said. “Discover Nature Women is about helping women do things they might not be able to do otherwise.”

A FAMILY AFFAIR
Many women attend DNW to learn and spend time with family. It was a tri-generational outing for Sandi Rice’s family. Rice, who lives in Pittsburg, Mo., attended with daughter Christy Jolly and granddaughter Jessica Jolly, who live in Kansas City. Rice had attended a previous MDC women’s event, but her daughter made the decision to come to DNW.

“I just thought, ‘What a great opportunity to do this together,’” said Christy.

Grandmother and mother were thrilled to share the experience with Jessica, who tied her first fly during the program and took it fishing at her grandmother’s nearby home that evening.

Elizabeth Gann of Waynesville, Mo., came with her sister, Shirley Beer, who lives in Pittsburg, Kan.

“We don’t get to see each other very often,” Gann said. “This is a great way for us to spend some time together and do something we don’t normally do.”

Gann said she initially thought the workshop would teach her some outdoor skills she could practice with her husband, who hunts and fishes.

“Then I thought, ‘No, this is about learning things for myself and spending time with my sister,’” Gann said.

GIRLS’ WEEKEND OUTDOORS
Friends Amy Huff of Fenton, and Stephanie Allstun of Ballwin, made the trip to learn outdoor skills from experts along with other women at similar skill levels.

“The instructors here are just so knowledgeable,” Allstun said. “They live it; they breathe it; they love it.”

“I wanted to be taught by someone with patience who was a good teacher,” Huff said. “They made me feel comfortable that I was learning it the right way.”

Huff said she looks forward to using her new archery skills with her 10-year-old daughter, Aubrey Stuart, who started learning archery at Meramec Heights Elementary School this past year. Her school participates in the Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program, which is coordinated by MDC. Stuart was the top fourth-grade girl at the Missouri state tournament. She placed 20th out of 188 fourth- grade girls at the National Archery in the Schools Program national tournament in Louisville, Ky.

EXPERIENCE TO LAST A LIFETIME
Lori Gale of Festus attended DNW with her friend Amanda Sloan. But for Gale the weekend was about more than just fun. Gale is a year away from finishing her degree in fisheries and wildlife management at Oregon State University, and she received an internship credit for attending the workshop. Ultimately she wants to work in a wildlife-related field, possibly as a conservation agent.

“It was nice coming here and talking to experts in the field,” Gale said.

While she has prior experience in outdoor activities, Gale said the workshop built on her own knowledge, solidifying some of her fishing and compass skills.

ALWAYS SOMETHING TO DISCOVER
“Discover Nature Women is just another way MDC makes Missouri a great place to hunt, fish and enjoy nature,” Lohraff said.

“Whether novices or experienced outdoorswomen, participants gained practical outdoor skills that will help them discover nature long after DNW’s conclusion,” said MDC Education Outreach Coordinator Amy Francka. “All weekend I heard nothing but positive comments from the women who attended the event. Most women were first-time attendees and already wanted to know when they could register for next year.”

For more information on MDC’s Discover Nature Women program, visit www.missouriconservation.org.
Tags: Ammoland.com)- Alpen Optics, along with Mississippi Outdoors, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Prois, Fisheries and Parks and PVA-ORHF (Outdoor Recreation Heritage Fund) recently hosted a turkey hunt/fishing event for injured female veterans to “celebrate” these women and the sacrifices they’ve made for our country.

Vickie Gardner, co-owner of Alpen Optics, says, “I know how much being in the outdoors hunting and fishing means to me, and I knew that our returning female veterans would benefit from these activities as well. After spending time with the three special women during their first turkey hunting experience, I can say without a doubt that the hunt was healing and uplifting for not only them but everyone involved.”

Gardner says she wants to make the media aware of this Celebration Hunt and solicits the media’s help in raising awareness for female veterans, especially injured female vets and how hunting can provide a level of healing for them.

Veterans Leslie Smith, Kate Calahan and Cheri Arnold all suffer from debilitating injuries, but say that hunting and spending time in the outdoors provides them with a sense of empowerment and self-assurance that strengthens their spirits.

The participants enjoyed two days of hunting and fishing on the beautiful 8000-acre property owned by Mississippi Commissioner Billy DeViney; and two of the ladies ended up taking a bird.

After harvesting her first ever turkey, Smith, an amputee who’s partially blind, said, “Hunting and taking this bird made me feel confident and powerful. I feel if I can do this, I can do anything.”

Calahan, who’s partially paralyzed, insisted on going after her gobbler on foot. She even climbed what she claimed were “two of the biggest hills in Mississippi” to get the job done.

“I began hunting a couple of years ago with the Paralyzed Veterans of America Organization,” Calahan says. “I realized through hunting that I don’t have to be stuck inside. I can do things. It’s a great feeling.”

Arnold, an incomplete quadriplegic, says hunting has opened up another world for her. Although she didn’t get a bird, Arnold says, “I was thrilled to witness Leslie and Kate’s excitement at getting a bird.”

Arnold was the only lady to catch a fish during their afternoon fishing trips for bream and bass.

Gardner says, “The 2nd Celebration Hunt was a life changing experience for all of us. I look forward to future hunts and to meeting more remarkable women who’ve given so much of themselves to protect the freedom that we often take for granted.”

Tags: National Hunting and Fishing Day

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.--(Ammoland.com)- More women than men took up hunting last year, according to new net figures from the National Sporting Goods Association.

While total hunters in the U.S. decreased slightly (.05 percent) between 2008 and 2009, the number of female hunters increased by 5.4 percent, netting 163,000 new participants. Growth areas for women included muzzleloading (up 134.6 percent), bowhunting (up 30.7 percent) and hunting with firearms (up 3.5 percent).

Data also show women outpaced men among net newcomers to target shooting with a rifle, where female participation grew by 4.1 percent.

New hunters and shooters are cause for celebration because more participation helps with funding for conservation, according to officials with National Hunting and Fishing Day. Congress established NHF Day, set for Sept. 25, 2010, to recognize America’s sportsmen and women for their leading role in fish, wildlife and habitat conservation (more info at www.nhfday.org).

“New hunters, shooters and anglers are a good thing for everyone who loves the outdoors,” said Denise Wagner of Wonders of Wildlife museum in Springfield, Mo., the official home of NHF Day. “Hunting and fishing license sales, combined with special taxes on firearms and ammunition, bows and arrows, and rods and reels generate about $100,000 every 30 minutes, totaling more than $1.75 billion per year, for conservation. When it comes to funding for wildlife and wild places, more is definitely better.”

The growth in new participation among women, perhaps counter-intuitive to traditionalists, is no surprise to Steve Sanetti, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the shooting, hunting and outdoor industry.

He explained, “Over the past several years, our industry has worked hard to help build this segment of our market. We’ve developed shooting and hunting products especially for women, reached out with welcoming and instructional workshops for women, and encouraged existing hunters and shooters to introduce their spouses, daughters and other newcomers to shooting sports and outdoor lifestyles. I believe these efforts are paying off, which is a bright spot for our industry as well as for conservation.”

Also unsurprised at the number of female hunters and shooters are the women Olympians of the USA Shooting Team, whose ever-increasing visibility has made them effective ambassadors, role models and recruiters of women to traditional outdoor sports.

“Shooting is one of the most fun and empowering things you can teach a young girl or a grown woman,” said Corey Cogdell, 23, a lifelong hunter and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in trap shooting. “Most men are surprised to find out that I am an avid outdoors woman and are often intrigued to learn how they can get females in their own lives involved in hunting and shooting.”

Connie Smotek, 45, a two-time Olympic skeet shooter, bronze medalist in the 2009 World Cup, and avid bird and big-game hunter, added, “Shooting and hunting are activities which a woman can enjoy for a lifetime.”

Cogdell and Smotek are among the many USA Shooting Team members who parlayed early interests in hunting into international success in shooting sports—an opportunity that didn’t exist for women until comparatively recently. Women’s shooting wasn’t officially added as an Olympic sport until 1984 (although U.S. rifle shooter Margaret Murdock won a medal competing against men in the 1976 games). Since then, U.S. women have won 10 Olympic medals in shooting, which is a growing source of pride.

Four of those 10 medals were won in the past four Olympics by Kim Rhode, a double-trap and skeet shooter now among the most elite and enduring athletes in all of sports.

The entire USA Shooting Team is serving as honorary chair for NHF Day 2010.

Sponsors for NHF Day 2010 include Wonders of Wildlife, National Shooting Sports Foundation, Bass Pro Shops, Smith & Wesson, Sportsman Channel, Realtree, Cabela’s, GunBroker.com, Yamaha, Pope and Young Club and Izaak Walton League of America.

For more information about NHF Day, visit Pennsylvania Game Commission

Pennsylvania --(Ammoland.com)- Women are Pennsylvania’s fastest growing group of hunters and a beneficial new partnership between the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) will help provide more outdoor opportunities to women in the Keystone State.

Thanks in large part to funding provided by the Game Commission, the NWTF has hired Jeff Souders, of Harrisburg, to serve as a full-time, Women in the Outdoors coordinator in Pennsylvania. Currently, Pennsylvania is the only state with its own Women in the Outdoors coordinator.

In his new position, Souders will create new Women in the Outdoors events, re-energize existing NWTF chapters and events and reach out to women who have never participated in the program.

“The Game Commission recognizes that there is a high interest level in the outdoors among women in the state and we want to provide more opportunities for them to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director.

“Providing women in our state with a full-time Women in the Outdoors coordinator is satisfying a tremendous need. This is a great opportunity to recruit new outdoorswomen and, as a joint venture between the Game Commission and NWTF, everyone benefits.”

Roe noted that the hiring of Souders compliments the Game Commission’s recent hiring of Julie Imes, of Elliottsburg, Perry County, who serves as the Recruitment and Retention Coordinator.

“In this capacity, Julie will serve as the coordinator for the National Archery in the Schools program, which is a gateway to encourage those youth who enjoy the challenge of target archery shooting to consider the transition into 3-D target archery shooting and then to hunting,” Roe said.

“With the wide array of youth and junior hunting and trapping opportunities offered by the Game Commission, Julie also recently developed an overall manual for sportsmen’s clubs, outdoors organizations and individual hunters to host or serve as mentors for young people interested in getting involved in hunting and trapping.”

The NWTF formed the Women in the Outdoors outreach program to provide opportunities for women to enjoy the outdoors in a stress-free environment. Knowledgeable and friendly instructors help participants learn new activities quickly and gain confidence in their abilities.

Souders noted that, in 2009, NWTF chapters hosted 240 Women in the Outdoors events across North America, in which women participated in various outdoor activities such as archery, canoeing, self-defense training, camping and shooting.

“The NWTF is the leading conservation organization in North America and I’m excited to help fulfill our mission,” said Souders. “Women in the Outdoors has been extremely successful in Pennsylvania and I look forward to helping women across the state enjoy outdoor activities.”

Through dynamic partnerships with state, federal and provincial wildlife agencies, the NWTF and its members have helped restore wild turkey populations across the country, spending more than $306 million to conserve 14 million acres of habitat for all types of wildlife.

The NWTF works to increase interest in the outdoors by bringing new hunters and conservationists into the fold through outdoor education events and its outreach programs – Women in the Outdoors, Wheelin’ Sportsmen, JAKES and Xtreme JAKES.

For more information about the NWTF and its outreach programs, visit www.nwtf.org or call (800) THE-NWTF.
Tags: Women of USPSA

GLASGOW, MONTANA –-(AmmoLand.com)- Champion action shooters Sharyn Cohen, Julie Golob and Kippi Leatham are pleased to announce the launch of Women of USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association), an online resource for women in practical shooting. Creating a home page at WomenofUSPSA.com, Women of USPSA updates can also be found on Facebook, Twitter, Ustream.TV and on the WomenofUSPSA.com Blog.

Women of USPSA’s mission is to encourage and inspire women everywhere to participate in the shooting sports by celebrating the women who compete in USPSA competitions. The main site debut features biographies of many of the women competing at this year’s USPSA Handgun National Championships in Las Vegas, NV. Live streaming video of the women’s race for the national title can be viewed directly through the “Watch LIVE” link on WomenofUSPSA.com.

“USPSA has been an online leader within the action shooting sports through their recognition of the female segment at USPSA.com’s Ladies Zone. To supplement their efforts to recruit more women into the sport, Kippi Leatham and I developed the concept of WomenofUSPSA.com some time ago. Wanting to breathe life into the idea before this year’s Handgun Nationals, we then recruited Sharyn Cohen for her technical talents to develop a web presence. Our goal is to celebrate the women who compete in the sport and showcase their shooting accomplishments at every level,” said Women of USPSA co-founder, Julie Golob.

Kippi Leatham added, “I was excited at the opportunity to promote the women who work very hard, both on and off the range. Most of us have full-time jobs, families, children and other hobbies that we enjoy. I hope that by uniting as a group, sharing our personal thoughts and stories, we can excite women, gun-owners and otherwise, to get out and shoot! As a pure voluntary effort, the response has been overwhelming in such a short time. I can’t wait to expand upon our celebration of the Women of USPSA, and I hope that our sister-shooters will catch the fever and want to pitch in.”

Through unique live coverage of the USPSA Handgun Nationals, Women of USPSA will feature the top women in the sport. Real time interviews and updates on Twitter and Facebook will provide fans the opportunity to follow their favorite female shooters. Women of USPSA’s future plans include growing the online presence by highlighting past and present lady champions within the sport.

For more information about the United States Practical Shooting Association please visit www.USPSA.org. class="wp-caption-text">International Training Inc's Women’s Only Weekend

DILLEY, TX - -(AmmoLand.com)- International Training, Inc. Texas held its first Women’s Only Weekend this past July. Sixteen women from coast to coast attended this unique training, designed specifically for the threats facing today’s women.

Saturday morning started with Greg Reid, Manager, Government Operations, giving a classroom brief on Advanced Driver Training and Crash Avoidance. This course takes basic driving skills to the next level where students gain hands-on experience in practical driving maneuvers in realistic emergency situations found on today’s highways and back roads. Instructor John Estrada graphically demonstrated the power of an airbag and why we must maintain a minimum safe distance from the airbag.

The class moved to Tracks 1 and 2 and “Ladies, start your engines!” was announced.
The women learned effective threshold braking and the use of vision to anticipate and avoid accidents, even while driving under stressful conditions until everyone successfully made it “through the cones”. On track 2, the same principles were extended to high speed driving, where students pushed the ITI fleet vehicles in excess of 80-90 MPH on the back “straight”.

After a lunch break, the ladies returned to brave 100 degree plus temperatures for a hands-on demonstration and practical application of unarmed defense techniques. Attacks from the front, attacks from behind, and ground fighting techniques were all practiced on the padded Defensive Tactics surface.

The second day started with Senior Instructor Benjamin Kurata presenting Handgun Orientation in the main classroom. A thorough review of the 4 major types of handguns, how to safely load, fire, reload, and unload them was covered. From there, types of ammunition, projectiles, and ammo components, storage and use were thoroughly discussed before the class made its way to Ranges 1 and 2 at the ITI Texas live fire range area. Director Bank Miller worked with half the class on semi-automatic pistols and Ben Kurata worked with the other half of the class on double action revolvers. At mid-morning the groups switched, and everyone live fired many, many rounds through both types of handguns before the lunch break.

After lunch, the group returned to the range complex where everyone was issued a semiautomatic pistol and magazines. Director Miller worked with half of the class on Range One, covering shooting on the move and multiple target engagement. Ben Kurata worked with the other half of the class on the Reactive Steel range, using non-toxic frangible ammunition, which allows shooting on the steel targets at closer, more realistic distances. The Reactive Steel exercises were a big hit with the students, and two students inquired about purchasing dueling trees for their personal use. At the mid-afternoon mark the groups switched ranges again so that everyone was exposed to shooting on the move, engaging multiple targets and lady versus lady shooting on reactive steel.

At the conclusion of the day, the class re-grouped in the main classroom for closing, critique, and graduation. Some of the comments made included:

“You guys nailed it!”
“This is the only place I am aware of where you can get this level of training in driving, empty hand defense, and shooting.”
“When’s the next one? I have a lot of friends that will want to attend.”

Bank Miller and Ben Kurata asked the class for input as to what the next level of Women’s Only Weekend should include. Based on the input from the class, Women’s Weekend II is scheduled for Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11 and will include the following:
•	Day 1: Advanced Driver Training and Crash Avoidance – full day on the tracks
•	Day 2: Home and Vehicle Defense – full day on the range, starting with shooting from, in, and around vehicles, then Home Defense techniques – dealing with corners, hallways, “fatal funnels”, stairways, and diminished light conditions.

As in Women’s Weekend I, ITI Texas will supply all vehicles, gas, tires, safety equipment, handguns, magazines, holsters, ammo, and targets including vehicles for ballistic testing. class="wp-caption-text">ProisHunting.com

Gunnison, CO - -(AmmoLand.com)- Can you bring home the bacon? Do you tend to bring your bacon home the old fashioned way, by jumping on a 600 pound wild hog with a knife? Or perhaps you prefer to bring home the mutton, and your idea of a relaxing day of hunting might include scaling a mountain and battling altitude sickness while stalking a trophy sheep.

Are you a real hunting Renaissance Woman with no fear and no limits in the field? Then you should enter a new contest that is right up your alley, so you can share your passion with the world.

Próis® Hunting Apparel is joining ranks with well known TV powerhouse Primal Adventures in a clarion call to the industry, kicking off an effort to discover the very first Extreme Huntress in a new national competition. Each contestant can submit an essay and photos demonstrating that she is the most hardcore huntress of them all. A panel of hunting industry celebrity judges will select the top 10 finalists, which will be posted on the Tahoe Films Ltd. website, so the hunting public can then judge the entries to select the winner.

“We were thrilled to be able to participate in a contest that will celebrate the contributions of serious women hunters, and create excitement and awareness in the industry,” says Kirstie Pike, CEO of Próis. “We can’t wait to hear the stories! It’s bound to be a tough competition.”

The grand prize (in addition to the considerable bragging rights the title will infer) will include a high profile, all expenses paid sheep and mountain goat combination hunt in British Columbia, and will be fully outfitted in Próis’ high performance hunting gear, along with a slew of other great equipment. The hunt itself will be filmed for a future episode of Primal Adventures on Versus, with the total value of the grand prize package at more than $50,000. The winner will be announced at the Próis booth at the 2010 SHOT Show.

“This contest will be an annual competitive event to not only applaud the amazing women who get out there and really go for it in the field, but to create authentic role models in our industry,” says Tom Opre of Primal Adventures. “It’s widely acknowledged that women will be playing a major role in the future of hunting and shooting sports, and we want to show that there are a lot of women out there who just kick butt, and thus are the “present” of hunting, too!”

For more information about the Extreme Huntress Contest, Primal Adventures, or Próis’ innovative line of serious, high performance hunting apparel for women, contact: Primal Adventures at Thomas@tahoefilms.com · Or Próis Hunting Apparel, 28001-B US Highway 50, Gunnison, CO 81230 · (970) 641-3355 · www.proishunting.com.
Tags: <a
