Covington VA --(Ammoland.com)- This is the first of a series of three handgun reviews based on some guns that I purchased most recently. (Your mileage could vary, of course.)

My previous experiences with pocket .380 ACP handguns was not good in the recoil category. After purchasing a Kel-tec .380 some years ago, I quickly realized that to break in that gun without my trigger finger killing me due to the sharp snap of that very light and small handgun, I would need the help of others.

I went to the range with 150 rounds of ammo and would tell other shooters, “Hey – this is my new Kel-tec .380 – want to try it out?” Then I would provide them with as much ammo as they wanted and would let THEM deal with the snappy recoil! After an hour or so my gun was broken in and, just as importantly, I was none the worse for wear.

So when I went to the range with my brand new Kahr P380, I brought along my 150 rounds of ammo and was prepared to let everyone at the range “try” my gun. I figured I would fire a few shots just to see how bad it was going to be for everyone else.

BAM! BAM! BAM!
Much to my total surprise, although the gun was extremely light and small, the recoil was totally tamed – tamed to the point that the gun was actually FUN TO SHOOT! I selfishly put all 150 rounds through the gun without sharing it. And I could have kept going had I brought more ammunition!

The accuracy was superb and, unlike many other small .380s, the gun had real sights on it. You can even get night sights for it.

Kahr P380 Handgun

I own quite a few Kahrs and I know that the polymer ones need a few hundred rounds to break them in due to tight tolerances. The P380 was no exception. There were occasional jams during the break-in period, but those are but faint memories now. During the break-in, the Kahr seemed to have a preference for Magtech ammo.

The P380 works exactly like its bigger brothers, including the slide locking back on the last shot, a slide release, a drop safety, a fully supported chamber, and a Browning-type lockup. Oh, and it has a fantastic trigger, especially for a gun that size. Magazine capacity is 6 + 1.

The gun disappears in my pocket and is so light I can easily forget that I am carrying it. I don’t carry a .380 very often, except when either I must carry light and/or extremely discretely or if I want to carry a backup gun. The Kahr P380 is my clear choice for such times.

Aimed Point Shooting

USA --(Ammoland.com)- The 1911 Colt automatic pistol caliber-45, was the standard-issue side arm of US Forces for 70 plus years, from 1911 to 1985. And it’s still carried by some military and police members. The 1911 is beloved by gun enthusiasts, and ubiquitous in the world of the gun. However, it has two design faults, and each of them can be fatal for a user.

One is the slide stop pin, which can result in the 1911 jamming when fired. For info on that, see the You Tube video titled: The 1911 – A Fatal Flaw.

The other fault is the 1911′s grip angle which can result in shooting low and missing, even at close quarters.

And that can have fatal consequences for a 1911 user, because if you’re going to be shot or killed, there is an 80 percent chance that it will happen at less than 20 feet.

THE GRIP.
The grip is one of the most important things in combat firing. The pistol should be placed in the crotch of the hand and firmly grasped. The barrel should be in direct alignment with the forearm, so if you pointed your finger instead of the gun, it would be right on target.

“For accurate shooting the gun must be in line with the forearm.”

THE 1911 IS NOT A NATURAL POINTER.
Due to its grip angle, the 1911 is not a natural pointer like a pistol, which when placed in the hand is directly on the target.

When the 1911 is placed in the hand and gripped, the gun muzzle will point down. And because of that, the wrist must be cocked upward to bring the 1911 in line with the target.

WW II soldiers were told that after a little practice, this adjustment will become instinctive.

Now, saying that doesn’t make it so, and in particular in a close quarters situation when someone is trying to kill you.

And you don’t have to be a combat veteran to know that. For example, Sight Shooting has been taught for use for 100 years, but studies of Police combat cases have found that it is seldom used. In combat, Officers default to instinctive shooting of some type.

Another problem with having to cock the wrist upwards, is that with firing, the gun will jump in your hand. So you will have to check the guns alignment before firing again to assure accuracy. And in the extreme stress of close quarters combat that is not likely to happen.

A CRUSH GRIP
According to Applegate, in life or death combat, you will grasp your gun in an almost convulsive grip. In Kill or Get Killed, he said….”in the midst of battle excitement, a man instinctively grips his weapon in this manner and certainly does not take time to hold his breath, line up the sights, and squeeze the trigger.”

And with a crush grip, the middle, ring and little fingers will torgue the gun down and around to the left which will make low shooting worse.

To prevent the low shooting problem, soldiers were taught to hold the arm down and straight, and with the wrist and elbow locked. The shoulder is used as a pivot point to bring the gun up to eye level.

The sights are not used and the gun is fired instinctively, point blank in the general direction of the target.

My concern is that in a self defense situation, it is unlikely that one will have the time and composure to grip the gun correctly, straighten the arm and lock the elbow and wrist, and then bring the stiff arm and gun up under the eye, and then shoot. And then, also have the presence of mind to check and make sure that the grip and locked wrist and arm are the in the same position after the recoil experienced with firing each shot to assure the accuracy of the next shot.

And if the combat area is confined, or filled with obstructions or obstacles, or the action is dynamic, the grip problem could be fatal.

USE YOUR SIGHTS
After writing, and rewriting, and thinking about this article and the subject of CQB shooting, the thought poped into my mind that it is no wonder that the mantras of the “modern shooting schools” have been USE YOUR SIGHTS and FSP, FSP – FRONT SIGHT PRESS.

They tacitly acknowledge the bad grip design, and also that in a high stress situation you will have a crush grip on your gun with the muzzle pointing down. So you must USE YOUR SIGHTS and/or bring the front sight up into view, or you will shoot low and miss.

Unfortunately, unless you are a SEAL or other super highly trained and practiced operator, you will focus on the threat, and your near vision focus will be lost due to the dump of adrenaline into your system which happens automatically and instinctively in a real life threat situation.

You will shoot low and left, unless you know of, and use, an alternate shooting method.

WHY THE ONE HANDED SHOOTING?
Because in a 10 year study by the NYPD of thousands of combat cases, Officers fired with the strong hand with few exceptions.

As to instinctive shooting which is used in gunfights, I favor what I call AIMED Point Shooting or P&S.

With P&S, all you hve to do is grab your gun with your index finger along the side, point your index finger at the target, and pull the trigger with your middle finger. It’s a shooting method that’s been around since at least 1835.

It is brain dead simple, fast, accurate, and deadly effective. And it can be learned and maintained with little or no training.

With your index finger along the side of the gun, it, the barrel and the sights will be in alignment. So you get automatic and correct sight alignment when you grab your gun, and automatic and correct sight placement when you point at a target, and for each shot made.

The grip provides a strong and level shooting platform made up of the natural pincer of thumb and index finger, and with the ring and little fingers adding tenacity to the grip.

With this four fingered grip, front punches and elbow smashes can be made, and the gun and forearm can be used as a crude battle axe. You can squeeze the beegebers out of the gun, and all you will do is add to the strength of the grip.

P&S is not dependant on the marksmanship grip, a stiff arm, or the use of the sights. And it can be used when moving, and against moving targets, even aerials.

Unfortunately, this simple, instinctive, accurate, and deadly method of shooting, which the U.S. Army says works, can not be used with the 1911 because of the design of the 1911′s slide stop as mentioned above.

That’s why Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation officials are pleasantly surprised that a Kimber 1911 in .45 ACP emerged as the top-performing firearm at 2009 fundraisers for elk habitat conservation.

The gun, blued with an RMEF logo laser-etched into rosewood grips, was the first-ever 1911 in the organization’s core lineup of firearms for auctions and raffles nationwide.

“Hunting rifles and shotguns are always the centerpiece of our fundraising efforts, but last year we sold 325 of these pistols and generated well over $600,000 gross for elk and other wildlife,” said Steve Decker, vice president of marketing for the Elk Foundation. “At several events this gun sold for more than $5,000, which we certainly never expected.”

Also in 2009, RMEF passed the 5.7 million-acre mark in habitat protected or enhanced for elk and other wildlife, and the 600,000-acre mark in hunting lands opened or secured for the public.

Decker says he’s uncertain whether the Elk Foundation’s 2009 handgun sales were related to the nationwide boom in handgun sales last year, or if the big game hunters who support the organization were simply enthusiastic about the new offering. Either way, the inaugural 1911 was so successful, RMEF will offer a Kimber .45 ACP companion model in stainless steel, with matching logo engraving, in 2010.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — -(AmmoLand.com)-  It took until the eleventh and final stage at the 2009 Area 2 USPSA Regional Handgun Championships before Dave Sevigny of Smyrna, Ga. was able to overtake Nils Jonasson of Mesa, Ariz. and repeat as the Production division champion. It is the fifth time Sevigny has won at Area 2 Production title.

Jonasson started the match strong winning the first three stages followed by a third place finish on stage four, behind Sevigny and the stage winner Gary Chan of Anaheim Hills, Calif., then again taking the stage win on the fifth stage. Halfway through the match, Jonasson, a Grand Master shooter who won the Production title in 2007, found himself in first place with a lead of more than 34 points over the defending champion.

Then on the sixth stage Sevigny, who is the captain of Team Glock and himself a Grand Master competitor, began his comeback winning that stage and the next four. Despite remaining behind Jonasson, who managed to keep the lead by finishing second on stages six, seven, eight and ten, Sevigny put himself just over five points down but in a prime position to win the match on the final stage.

On stage 11, the 50-point 10-round final stage of the match, Jonasson finished with seven A zone hits and three C zone hits for a total of 44 points shot in a time of 6.99 seconds giving him a 6.2947 hit factor and a final stage score of 39.8894. He finished the match with a final overall score of 1424.6612.

Sevigny, who is known for both his tremendous speed and accuracy, proceeded to attack the final stage posting the fastest time of any production shooter, 5.83 seconds, and scoring 46 points on eight A zone hits and two C zone hits for a hit factor of 7.8902 that won him both the stage and the match. Sevigny finished the match with a final score of 1429.3106 and a narrow 4.6494 advantage of Jonasson to take the win.

“This was classic production division battle and demonstrates how competitive this division truly is,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association. “Dave shot an excellent come-from-behind match winning not just the Area 2 Championship but his seventh Area title of the 2009 season.”

Rounding out the top five in the Production competition were three Master level shooters. Gary Chan finished third with 1268.6316 points while Kyle Schmidt of Gilbert, Ariz. took fourth shooting 1239.7421 and Jim Levis of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. finished fifth with 1196.4295 points.

The match, which was held November 12-15 at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club in Mesa, Ariz., drew a total of 355 shooters who put a combined 100,000-plus rounds down range competing for regional championship titles in the Open, Limited, Limited-10, Production, Revolver and Single Stack divisions.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Team Smith & Wesson’s John Bagakis of Livermore, Calif. claimed the Revolver division title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Handgun Championships.

Bagakis, who is ranked a Grand Master, the highest skill level in the sport of Practical Shooting, dominated the field by winning all eleven stages for a final score of 1470. He outpaced his nearest competitor, Pat Hogue of Atascadero, Calif., by just over 302 match points. Hogue finished second in the match with a score of 1167.7836.

“John is one of the rising stars in the Revolver division as evidenced but his Area 2 win, and with the support of Smith & Wesson I think it’s safe to say John will continue to be a threat in revolver competitions,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

USPSA Shooter Kippi Leatham

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — -(AmmoLand.com)- Springfield Armory’s husband and wife team of Kippi and Robbie Leatham of Mesa, Ariz. brought home two division titles from the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Handgun Championships.

Kippi won the Women’s Production division title while husband Robbie took top honors in the Limited division. Robbie Leatham previously won the Limited title in 2005 and 2004.

“Kippi and Robbie represent a serious one-two punch for Springfield Armory and our congratulations go out to them both,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

USPSA Shooter Robbie Leatham

Among the women shooters, Kippi Leatham edged out Sara Dunivin by just over 18 points to capture the Women’s Production division title with a final score of 895.0602. Leatham’s score placed her 26th overall among all shooters competing with the duty-style pistols used in Production. Leatham shot the match using a 9mm Springfield Armory XD.

Dunivin finished second with a final score of 876.6597. Rounding out the top five women in Production were third place finisher Carrie Jamrogowicz shooting a score of 819.7222 points, Kandi Blick in fourth with 710.5567 and Ana Lisa Christensen taking fifth with a score of 642.4330 match points.

In the Limited competition the other half of the Leatham household topped an extremely competitive field of 108 shooters that included 16 Masters and five Grand Masters. Robbie Leatham, regarded by many to be one of the greatest practical shooters of all time, is himself ranked a Grand Master.

In taking the title Leatham won five of the 11 stages in the match and took the lead after the fourth. John Mouret of Surprise, Ariz. started the match out in front by winning the first stage. Henning Wallgren of Longmont, Colo. pulled into the lead after the second stage and held it through the third, ultimately handing over the lead to Leatham after the fourth stage.

Leatham remained in the lead through the rest of the match finishing with a final score of 1391.3146, over 55 points ahead of Wallgren who finished second by winning two stages and shooting 1335.6162.

Rounding out the Limited top five were Mouret in third with 1324.0954 points, Glenn Shelby of Aztec, N.M. shooting 1300.1898 and Steve Shroufe of Flagstaff, Ariz. posting a final score of 1252.8102 match points.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Websterville, Vermont’s Steve Rubalcaba successfully defended his 2008 win by again taking the Limited-10 title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Handgun Championship.

Rubalcaba faced stiff competition from both Jim Zimmerman and Russ Shaver who took turns leading the match. Zimmerman of Commerce City, Colo. took the lead early winning the first two stages and holding the lead until the fifth stage when Shaver overtook him.

Despite the fact he didn’t win a single stage in the match, Shaver, who hails from Mission Viejo, Calif., was able to hold on to his lead all the way through the ninth stage and ultimately finish second with a score of 1371.2384.

Rubalcaba began to make his move by winning the sixth stage. He then proceeded to win the eighth, ninth and tenth stages. These three consecutive stage wins propelled Rubalcaba to the front and allowed him to take lead on the tenth stage.

Rubalcaba’s rally helped him finish the match more than 24 points ahead of Shaver and over 46 points ahead of Zimmerman and to post a final winning score of 1395.5247.

“With a little less than 50 points separating the top four shooters in the Limited-10 match, Steve had his handles full. His rally in the late stages turned the match in his favor and earned him a much deserved return visit to the winner’s circle,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Rounding out the top five were Zimmerman in third with 1349.1721, Clint Milburn of Surrey, British Columbia in fourth with 1345.5900 and Alan Liotta of Rosemount, Minn. in fifth with 1266.6925.

USPSA Shooter Taran Butler

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. —-(AmmoLand.com)- In a field packed with Masters and Grand Masters, Taran Butler of Simi Valley, Calif. managed to hold off 137 shooters to take the coveted Open division title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Handgun Championships. The win represents Butler’s first and only Area victory in the 2009 season.

Butler, who is ranked a Grand Master himself and won the Area 2 Limited division title in 2008, took the Open division lead on the second stage and held it through the entire match by winning four of the eleven stages. Butler won the division with a final score of 1407.2097.

“Taran faced a very strong field of Open shooters yet managed to hold all of them off by shooting a strong match and picking up key stage wins. Not an easy feat when you realize there were 13 Grand Masters and 25 Masters gunning for the title,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Butler’s nearest competitor, Eddie Garcia of Mesa, Ariz., also won four stages but was never able to close the gap. Garcia finished more than 38 points behind Butler with a final score of 1368.6828

Chris Fritz of Spanaway, Wash. won the first stage but finished third with 1348.3053 while Nick Helterline of Everett, Wash. and Glenn Higdon of Peyton, Colo. rounded out the top five finishing fourth and fifth shooting 1316.7757 and 1314.3098 respectively.

The Single Stack division, so called because the model 1911 pistols used in competition feature magazines which hold just a single column of ammunition, is growing in popularity as more and more competitors opt to shoot the more traditional model pistol. The 1911 is also one of the most popular firearms sold in America.

Hobdell, who lives in Tempe, Ariz., won six of the 11 stages in the match on his way to posting a final score of 1417.6591 match points. Hobdell holds the rank of Master in the Single Stack division but is a Grand Master in the Production division.

“Angus is one of the toughest competitors on the Practical Shooting circuit and is always in the hunt to win whatever match he enters. This Area 2 win is just another milestone in his storied career,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Rounding out the top five in the Single Stack competition were Tim Milkovich of Glendale, Ariz. who finished more than 102 points behind Hobdell in second place with 1315.3776. Mike Lin of Gilbert, Ariz. took third shooting a score of 1253.4519 while Andrew John of Mesa, Ariz. and Scott Shepherd of Gilbert, Ariz. finished fourth and fifth with 1179.3874 and 1176.8434 respectively.

Crimson Trace Lasergrips for SIG P226, P228, P229 Pistols

The new Lasergrips incorporate a one-piece wrap-around grip style with a large front activation switch. MSRP for both models is $329.00.

The new LG-426 and LG-429 Lasergrips are contoured to be both comfortable and secure in the hand while shooting. The aggressively textured polymer side panels are uniquely patterned to optimize the contact of the palm onto the pistol and are connected together with a durable rubber strap which provides even more grip while shooting with or without gloves.

Inside these robust Lasergrips is a storage slot for an adjustment wrench. The wrench is not only held in place by the form-fitted slot but a magnet also provides extra retention of the sight adjusting tool.

The supplied CR2032 batteries provide over two hours of illumination and the shelf life of these batteries is five years. As with all Lasergrips, the red targeting dot is user adjustable for windage and elevation. There is a touch-sensitive master on/off switch on the left side of the Lasergrips that is inset into the grip.

Installation is extremely simple with the new SIG Lasergrips. Simply remove the stock grips and attach the Lasergrips using the stock screws and washers. The Lasergrips are pre-sighted at the factory for 50 feet but can be changed by the shooter by turning the elevation and windage adjustment screws located on the laser diode housing. All Lasergrips come with an accessory pack that contains batteries, hex wrenches for user adjustability, a cleaning cloth and several cleaning swabs. A three-year warranty is standard.

Georgetown, TX - -(AmmoLand.com)- New introductions that will be available prior to the SHOT Show are the Escort, Guardian, and Off Duty in .40S&W. No price change for the caliber differences even though the magazines are more expensive. We’ll also be able to provide the GP6 & GP6-C with a 5″ barrel. We’re taking orders for them all now, too.

As MUST happen when we start adding new firearms to the product line, something has to go to make room for them. As you’re aware, the “TruSight” has already bitten the dust! Even though we recently gotten some excellent press coverage on the Rogue, we intend to build only one more run of approximately 20 pieces. If this one “trips yer trigger”, you need to get your order entered soon. Further candidates (no decision ‘til the end of the year) are those perennially on the list, the 6 inch Trojan and the Lawman. Because we’ve got 8-12 potential new products, we’ve got to make some decisions soon. I think the new models will intrigue you greatly but we’ll hold those for the “SHOT Show Surprise”.

The owners’ manual for the “Sporting” and “Tactical” rifles is on the website. Those items are still selling very well. Well enough that we’re able to reduce the price on both. Check with your contact here, or your Distributor, for the new price structure.

Increased foreign manufacturing costs and the weakening U.S. $ will necessitate a minor price increase on our imported products, the GP6, GP6-C, and the Spartan. These won’t happen all at once but will phase in as contracts are renewed. We’ll probably be increasing prices on the LS9 and on select 1911 and 2011 parts, also, as of January 1, 2010. Old prices are good until we publish a price list dated 1/1/10.

As they say on late night TV, “back by popular demand”, you’ll start seeing the previously discontinued “2011″ single stack polymer grip making a comeback. This is proving necessary due to the number of folks that want to use our (and other manufacturers) .22LR top ends and the number of countries and states that have 10 round only laws.

We still can’t keep up with the demand for the 1911 & 2011 .22LR conversion kits but we’re pushin’ as hard as we can. Just as a preliminary forecast, it looks like our total product output will be up a few points over 30% by the end of this year.

MPA Side-Cocking Mechanism for MAC-10 Pistols
