class="wp-caption-text">Treadlightly.Org

Ogden, UT – -(AmmoLand.com)- The nonprofit organization Tread Lightly!, in partnership with some of the nation’s most influential shooting sports organizations, has released nine tips to help shooters minimize their impact on the environment.

The tips are part of a recent public awareness campaign developed to help shooters and hunters keep their access open by encouraging proper environmental and social behaviors. The multifaceted campaign is called Respected Access is Open Access.

Target shoot only on lands open to shooting.

Use only appropriate targets. Shooting at trees and other natural objects is illegal and leaves a negative image about shooters.

Only shoot where there is a good backstop to stop your bullets.

Shooting at signs, kiosks, trash containers, buildings and other property is vandalism and illegal.

Be sure to pack out your trash including food wrappings, shotgun shells, brass or steel cases, fragmented clay pigeons, and other targets. Be a thoughtful shooter and pick up litter and target trash left by others.

Do not shoot household appliances or other objects dumped in shooting areas. It is misconstrued that shooters are the dumpers.

Shooting across roads, trails, waterways or into caves or rocky areas is unsafe. Be sure you see your target clearly and you know what lies between you, the target, and beyond.

Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

Shoot away from developed recreation sites such as campgrounds, trailheads, parking areas and boat ramps.

Travel on designated routes. Avoid traveling in sensitive areas such as meadows, lakeshores, wetlands and streams.

“The message of the campaign is simple—responsible behavior leads to continued access,” said Lori McCullough, executive director of the nonprofit Tread Lightly!. “Outdoor opportunities in America are dwindling at a rate so serious it demands our immediate action. Damage caused by a few uninformed or uncaring recreationists is contributing to the loss of access for everyone. This campaign will help change that.”

Funding for the campaign has come through grants from Yamaha Motor Corporation’s OHV Access Initiative, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Safari Club International, National Wild Turkey Federation, Boone and Crockett Club, US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. Tread Lightly! created Respected Access is Open Access at the request of the Federal Lands Hunting and Shooting Sports Roundtable.

Public service announcements, web banners, decals, brochures, and more quick tips can be found at the campaign’s website: www.respectedaccess.org.

Tread Lightly! is a national nonprofit organization with a mission to promote responsible recreation through ethics education and stewardship. Tread Lightly!’s educational message, along with its training and restoration initiatives are strategically designed to instill an ethic of responsibility in outdoor enthusiasts and the industries that serve them. The program is long-term in scope with a goal to balance the needs of the people who enjoy outdoor recreation with our need to maintain a healthy environment. Tread Lightly! offers unique programs and services to help remedy current recreation issues.

In 2006, a consortium of fish and wildlife conservation organizations and three federal land management agencies signed the Federal Lands Hunting, Fishing & Shooting Sports Memorandum of Understanding. As a result of this agreement, the Federal Lands Hunting and Shooting Sports Roundtable was created to focus on improving access and opportunities for hunters and recreational shooters across America. The Respected Access education campaign is one of the Roundtable’s top initiatives.

The organizations and agencies signed on to the Federal Lands Hunting, Fishing & Shooting Sports MOU are: USDA Forest Service, USDI Bureau of Land Management, USDI Fish & Wildlife Service, American Sportfishing Association, Archery Trade Association, Association of Fish & Wildlife Agencies, Bear Trust International, Boone & Crockett Club of America, Bow Hunting Preservation Alliance, Campfire Club of America, Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, Conservation Force, Dallas Safari Club, Delta Waterfowl Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Wild Sheep Foundation, Houston Safari Club, Izaak Walton League of America, National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses, National Rifle Association of America, National Shooting Sport Foundation, National Trapper’s Association, National Wild Turkey Federation, North American Bear Foundation, North American Grouse Partnership, Orion – The Hunter’s Institute, Pheasants Forever, Pope & Young Club, Public Lands Foundation, Quail Unlimited, Quality Deer Management Association, Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ruffed Grouse Society, Safari Club International, Sand County Foundation, Sporting Arms & Ammunition Manufacturers Institute, Texas Wildlife Association, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance, Whitetails Unlimited, Wildlife Forever and the Wildlife Management Institute.
Tags: Whitetails Unlimited

Wisconsin’s Door County - -(AmmoLand.com)- Project POLITE is Whitetails Unlimited’s long-running program to encourage cooperation and respect between hunters and landowners.

The popular program supplies bright green Hunting With Permission signs to landowners, providing potential hunters with a name and phone number to contact for permission to hunt on posted land.

The second component, the Hunter-Landowner ID Card, is an easy way to exchange names, addresses and phone numbers, greatly increasing the trust and understanding for both parties.

The program has been assisting hunters and landowners for more than 20 years.

“It’s not too late for landowners to call us and get the bright green Hunting With Permission signs before the deer season,” said WTU Executive Director Pete Gerl. “This is a very simple way to manage hunters on their land, and to be able to reduce the numbers of deer that may be damaging their crops.”

The signs can help avoid the time-consuming process of trying to find out who owns a particular piece of land; and landowners who allow hunters on their land find this an easy way to have hunters contact them.

The signs are available at no charge (in limited quantities) by contacting WTU national headquarters at (920) 743-6777. Larger quantities are available at a very reasonable cost.

The second component of Project POLITE is the Hunting With Permission ID card, which is a wallet-sized card that hunters can simply fill in with contact information and provide to the landowner. This lets the landowner know exactly who is on their land, providing a level of confidence for the landowner. Since the program’s inception more than 20 years ago, WTU’s Project POLITE has opened tens of thousand of acres to the sport of regulated hunting.

“The ID cards are a simple, effective way to elevate the level of trust for landowners,” said WTU Executive Director Pete Gerl. “For hunters, this is an easy way to build a file of possible hunting locations for the future, and also provides an easy way for the hunter to send the landowner a thank-you note later, and remember a name and phone number for future requests to hunt.”

The Hunting With Permission ID cards are also available at no charge (in limited quantities) by contacting WTU national headquarters at (920) 743-6777. Rayburn commented, “I have bought and sold land both personally and professionally for the last twenty years and have shared a passion for the outdoors for more than 40 years.”

Faller stated, “I’ve been lucky enough to have established and owned several hunting clubs for upland, waterfowl and deer hunting over the last thirty-five years. My fascination with agriculture and recreational land started as a small dream to simply become a landowner. Since then, it has taken us nearly four decades to amass a large contiguous tract of land in central Illinois that we are privileged enough to call our family farm.” Faller, with so much “hands on” experience and knowledge of farm and recreational land management has served as a land consultant to various individuals, family farms and financial institutions across Illinois.

The duo recognized a need for a land specialist company in Illinois that could provide personalized service to farm and recreational owners, as well as, offer the client national exposure. Rayburn stated, “We were extremely excited to learn about the Mossy Oak Properties network. Not only is the Mossy Oak name known for a very high level of trust, quality and service, but it gives us the opportunity to provide our clients with tremendous marketing power.” Continuing, Rayburn states, “We chose Butler, due to its central location relative to St. Louis, Springfield and other population centers in the state. We plan to offer a variety of services including auctions, habitat development, consulting and land management. Our plan is to aggressively open ten new offices in the state within the next five years.”

For additional information about Mossy Oak Properties AgriRec Land contact Tom Rayburn or Don Faller @ 888-311-LAND (5263) or www.agrirecland.com.

About:
National Wild Turkey Federation

NORTH DAKOTA – The National Wild Turkey Federation is making repairing riparian areas and improving land access for hunters a priority in the Great Plains states.

“Unfortunately, wildlife habitat along flowing waterways has declined in overall health and condition in western North Dakota and South Dakota, and in eastern Montana and Wyoming,” said Jared McJunkin, NWTF regional biologist for the Great Plains states. “With active work through this program, riparian forests can be restored, which will benefit wild turkeys and many other valuable wildlife species.”

Through the Northern Plains Riparian Restoration Initiative, the NWTF improves habitat along rivers and streams and around roost areas to benefit both game and non-game species, including wild turkeys, bald eagles and many types of waterfowl and mammals. The project also educates landowners on how they can improve their properties for wildlife.

The NWTF also works to improve riparian habitat through its involvement with the Northern Great Plains Joint Venture, which consists of federal and state wildlife agencies, non-government conservation organizations, an energy company and a private landowner. The members are working cooperatively to improve the value and quality of riparian habitat and wildlife on more than 90,000 acres in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.

McJunkin joined the Northern Great Plains Joint Venture management board as an NWTF representative in 2007, to help provide valuable input on how to improve riparian habitat in ways that will mean better conditions for all types of wildlife.

“The Northern Great Plains Joint Venture’s members work with conservation organizations like the NWTF that lead national, regional and state conservation efforts to benefit resident game birds,” said Ken Sambor, coordinator of the Northern Great Plains Joint Venture. “The NWTF is a valuable partner because improvements that are meant to improve wild turkey habitat also provide substantial benefits for many other birds and wildlife species.”

More Places to Hunt in the Great Plains
In a continued effort to offer hunters more places to hunt, the NWTF’s North Dakota State Chapter and its partners have purchased a 233-acre addition to the Smith Grove Wildlife Management Area in central North Dakota’s Oliver County.

Unique because it is home to the only free-flowing stretch of the Missouri River, the Smith Grove WMA represents some the river’s best remaining riparian habitat and provides resources for wild turkeys and other wildlife.

With help from its project partners, the NWTF is making additional public land available to hunters in North Dakota, which, according to the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, spend $133 million and 1 million days afield pursuing their sport each year.

“The NWTF’s North Dakota State Chapter is presented with many opportunities to purchase small, fragmented tracts of land throughout the state,” said DuWayne Miller, NWTF North Dakota State Chapter president. “Remaining focused on expanding existing parcels of public land instead of purchasing a few acres randomly is challenging, but will serve our wildlife resources and public-land hunters well in the future. We’ve stretched our dollars to help expand an existing WMA and protect important riparian habitat from development, which will result in more stable and diverse wildlife populations and high-quality hunting experiences.”

Project partners on this land purchase include the North Dakota Natural Resources Trust, North Dakota Game and Fish Department, The Nature Conservancy, the Northern Great Plains Joint Venture and Friends of the Missouri River.

For more information about the NWTF visit www.nwtf.org or call (800) THE-NWTF.

About the NWTF:
In 1973, Tom Rodgers founded the National Wild Turkey Federation in Fredericksburg, Va., as a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit conservation and education organization with a mission dedicated to conserving wild turkeys and preserving hunting traditions. Shortly thereafter, Rodgers relocated the NWTF to Edgefield, S.C., where it’s still headquartered today.

At the time NWTF was established, there were only 1.3 million wild turkeys. Today that number stands at more than seven million birds throughout North America, thanks to the efforts of state, federal and provincial wildlife agencies, the NWTF and its members and partners.

Growth and progress define the NWTF as it has expanded from 1,300 members in 1973 to more than a half million today. With that growth has come impressive strides in wildlife management as the NWTF has forged dynamic partnerships across the country to further its conservation mission. Together, the NWTF’s partners, sponsors and grassroots members have raised and spent more than $279 million upholding hunting traditions and conserving nearly 14 million acres of wildlife habitat.

While wild turkey restoration is nearing completion, the NWTF still has much work to do. Across North America, supporters are working to enhance habitat for wild turkeys and other wildlife while providing hunters with more opportunities and access to public and private land. In addition, NWTF volunteers and partners are introducing youth, women and people with disabilities to the outdoors through special educational events.

If you would like to become a member of Team NWTF, join a committee or start a chapter, please visit our Web site at <a
