You may never set foot in NCMC, but this is a direct assault on your Second Amendment rights, and it’s happening all across Colorado — illegally.

If RMGO prevails, law-abiding gun owners in Colorado will be allowed to carry in NCMC to protect themselves and their families from any violent criminal who would seek to do them harm.

It will send a message to every (illegally) gun-banning facility.

Make no mistake about it, this is a lawsuit to put ALL taxpayer-funded facilities on notice: RMGO will sue if you violate the Second Amendment rights of Colorado gun owners.

Gun owners in Colorado should be outraged by this gross violation of state law and our Second Amendment rights.

You and I need to make an example of NCMC — that banning guns in taxpayer-funded facilities will not be tolerated in Colorado.

It’s not only detrimental to the safety of law-abiding citizens, but it shows a blatant disregard for the law. class="wp-caption-text">Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

Colorado --(Ammoland.com)- On the evening of Monday, January 30th, in Denver, we have a chance to help get rid of one of the U.S. Senate’s worst Second Amendment votes.

Richard Mourdock is running against Indiana U.S. Senator Dick Lugar, and will be hosting a fundraiser in the Denver-Metro area.

Make no mistake about it; Lugar is THE “Tea Party” target for the 2012 primary season.

The event is being held in Downtown Denver at Maggiano’s restaurant on Monday, Jan. 30th starting at 6:30pm. The campaign is asking $1,500 per couple to attend the event.

And though I realize that’s a lot of money, it’s an EXTREMELY important race.

Here’s why:

“Republican” Senator Dick Lugar was in the news in 2011 when he called for a reinstatement of the Assault Weapons ban.

What you might not know is that this isn’t Senator Lugar’s only foray into gun control.

In fact, if there were a U.S. Senator who rivaled Democrats in calls for new gun controls, it would be Dick Lugar.

Paul Helmke, former President of the Brady Campaign, said “Sen. Lugar is one of my heroes.”

Part of that might stem from the fact that Lugar’s Press Secretary, Mark Helmke, is Paul Helmke’s brother, giving the Brady Campaign unparalleled access.

I’ve debated Paul Helmke on national TV several times. I can tell you, with certainty, that this man HATES freedom — and would love to make every firearm in America illegal.

Paul Helmke himself is a long-time Indiana political gadfly of the worst type. His alliance with the gun control elite is well-documented, as is his admiration for Dick Lugar.

The other reason the gun-banning Brady crowd loves Senator Lugar is that he has voted with them more than any Republican Senator in Senate history.

For that reason, New York’s billionaire mayor (who also leads Mayors Against Guns), Michael Bloomberg recently held a fundraiser in New York city for Dick Lugar.

The connections are just too great to ignore.

Senator Dick Lugar MUST be defeated in the Indiana primary. It has national implications, which should make any concerned gun owner in America get involved in this race.

And there are many reasons and issues to want to retire Dick Lugar from the US Senate. His disdain for the “tea party” movement (i.e. moving our government toward a more Constitutional approach and encouraging fiscal accountability from Washington) is epic.

The federal PAC I run, the National Association for Gun Rights PAC, has endorsed Richard Mourdock and maxed out to his campaign.

But we need your help as well.

So, I strongly encourage you to do one of two things:

Attend the fundraiser in Denver on Jan. 30th by donating $1,500. If you can do this, call 317-613-7794 to RSVP with Fred Cooper.

If you can’t afford that, and I know that’s a tall order, donate directly to the Mourdock campaign online.

You can donate to Richard Mourdock -- and against Tricky Dick Lugar -- by following the link here: http://tiny.cc/8kvgc .

I’ll be there Monday night, and hope you will as well.

For freedom,

Dudley Brown
Ammoland.com)- One of the reasons I am so opposed to the government being involved in your Second Amendment rights is that it takes the power away from you and puts it in their hands.

In the hands of people like the former Republican Sheriff of Arapahoe County, Patrick Sullivan.

Sullivan made a habit of helping out groups like the Brady Campaign when it came to preventing law-abiding citizens from exercising their Second Amendment rights.

He even testified before Congress for Handgun Control in favor of the Brady bill, and in the State Capitol against any concealed carry reform.

During his 18-year tenure as Arapahoe County Sheriff, Sullivan was a poster boy for big government and was bestowed the title of national “Sheriff of the Year” in 2001 for his efforts at infringing your rights – even at a national level.

Whenever she needed him, Sarah Brady trotted out Sheriff Sullivan as a token Republican who wanted to impose gun control on America — and it worked.

Our nation still lives under the insidious scheme of the Brady Act (which, incidentally, violates the Constitutional prohibition of infringing on the right to keep and bear arms).

Sheriff Sullivan was also famous for trying to buy off local gun rights activists with a “buddy” concealed carry permit (when permits were almost impossible to acquire).

In 1995 Sullivan offered me a permit, attempting to buy my inactivity in the battle for concealed carry in Colorado. It didn’t work. I literally told Sheriff Sullivan where to stick his permit, and continued to work to change Colorado’s law.

On Tuesday Sullivan was arrested for dealing meth to a man for… Well, let’s just say it was for things I would rather not repeat.

That’s right; a power-hungry sheriff intent on taking your freedoms turned out to be a drug-dealing, male prostitute-seeker.

Former Sheriff Sullivan is now sitting in the Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility. That’s right. He’s sitting in the jail named for his honor.

And this is the kind of person the Brady Campaign champions and uses to testify as an “expert”? I would like to tell you that I’m shocked, but you’re smart enough to know better. This is why I am always skeptical of any politician who seeks more control, not less. They are out for personal gain and they will get it at your expense.

In the case of Sheriff Sullivan, I can personally say I’ve witnessed him trampling on your rights for years. Sheriff Sullivan was one of the main obstacles to passing concealed carry in Colorado. Yet apparently the anti-gun crowd thinks men like this should set a standard for who can own a gun and who can’t.

While this may be dismissed by some as just another corrupt cop, the fact is that he has been personally involved in the fight against your Second Amendment rights. And he was successful at it.

It’s pure travesty of justice that a man like Sullivan could be given such authority to prevent you from your own rights, but without standing up to power, it’s like I said at the beginning – it corrupts.

I make it my pledge to you, the gun owner, to stand up against jack-booted thugs like Patrick Sullivan at every turn, regardless of position or party affiliation.

Are you with me?

For freedom,

Dudley Brown<br

Clearly McConnell and Kyl didn’t get the message that gun owners sent in the last election.

They need to hear from you RIGHT NOW!

Please call Senator Mitch McConnell at (202) 224-2541 and Senator Jon Kyl at (202) 224-4521. Tell them that gun owners – and all Americans – demand a full up or down vote on Rand Paul’s pro-gun amendment to the mis-named Patriot Act.

Once you’ve called Republican leadership, please, call both your senators again. Even if you’ve already done it, they need to hear from you again.

Call your state Senator at 1-877-762-8762 (you must ask for their office) and demand they stand up for gun owners and support Rand Paul’s pro-gun amendment to the Patriot Act. Tell them that gun owners – and all Americans – demand protection from the Patriot Act-Police state.

Please, don’t wait to make these calls.

Action on the Patriot Act will come this afternoon, and Republican leadership and your senators need to hear from you.

Right now…

For Liberty,

Dudley Brown
Ammoland.com)- Though not a surprise, yesterday the Senate State Affairs Committee voted 3-2 to kill HB1205, RMGO’s Constitutional Carry bill, which was carried by St. Rep. Chris Holbert and St. Sen. Greg Brophy.

The legislation would have made Colorado a “permit optional” state for concealed carry, joining Vermont, Alaska, Arizona, and Wyoming.

Despite overwhelming testimony that states with similar laws did not, in fact, see an increase in violence, Democrat Senators in the State Affairs Committee (Sens. Rollie Heath, Betty Boyd, and Bob Bacon) voted against the bill while GOP Sens. Kevin Grantham and Bill Cadman voted for the legislation.

State Senator Greg Brophy (front) and RMGO Executive Director Dudley Brown testify in favor of HB1205 on March 23, 2011. Click the image to watch the testimony.

Senator Greg Brophy told committee members that HB1205 would simply level the playing field for law-abiding citizen, but criminals really don’t care what the law says – and don’t seek permits in the first place.

RMGO Executive Director Dudley Brown said that domestic violence prevention groups should support Constitutional Carry rather than oppose it, since the permit process itself is intimidating to many females who don’t want to be on lists and don’t normally think of themselves as gun advocates but might need the means to self defense in volatile situations.

“Why should a woman who wants to defend herself from a stalker or violent ex-boyfriend be forced to acquire an expensive permit, just for the permission to protect herself?” said Brown.

Yuma County Sheriff Chad Day, testifying on behalf of himself and Weld County Sheriff John Cooke, said the Second Amendment is a right. “Causing people to jump through government hoops turns that right into a mere privilege.” Sheriff Day cited numerous statistics to show that more citizens carrying concealed is a good thing for public safety.

Of course, Sheriff Day wasn’t the only law enforcement to speak on the bill. Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle (representing “Republican-In-Name-Only” Arapahoe Sheriff Grayson Robinson and Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr) opposed the bill.

Lobbyist Anne Marie Jensen, who represented the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police but also normally works for Tom Mauser’s “Colorado Ceasefire Capitol Fund”, said “Sen. Brophy believes more guns will make citizens safer. Unfortunately, the Chiefs don’t agree.”

Those advocating for Constitutional Carry should take heart: it took 9 years to pass a “Shall Issue” law in Colorado, and this is a long-term fight. Just remember these votes in the 2012 elections.

RMGO has fought for Constitutional Carry (often called Vermont) since the founding of the group. And as the famous movie line goes, We’ll be back.

About:
Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

Colorado --(Ammoland.com)- Friday State Rep. Chris Holbert (R-Parker) and State Sen. Greg Brophy (R-Wray) introduced HB1205, the Constitutional Carry Act of 2011.

This bill is designed to do one thing: allow citizens who are legally eligible to possess handguns to carry that handgun without obtaining a costly, burdensome and bureaucratic permit.

One of the chief advantages this bill presents is that citizens are not put on any government tracking list merely for carrying the tools for self defense. Citizens in Vermont, Alaska and Arizona currently enjoy that right, and Wyoming could be joining that list in the next few months.

Just as important as what HB1205 does are what it does not do:

Does not repeal or otherwise change Colorado’s existing concealed carry permit law (CRS 18-12-201).

Does not authorize the carrying of a concealed handgun by felons, the mentally ill, juveniles or anyone otherwise prohibited from possessing a handgun under state and federal law.

Does not change where concealed handguns are allowed as defined by CRS 18-12-214.

Does not affect reciprocity agreements with other states in any manner.

Does not affect the ability of prosecutors to pursue charges for other crimes.

This bill is a major step for freedom, and is something every gun owner in Colorado should get behind.

Make sure you sign our petition for this bill by clicking here. We’ll let you know as soon as this bill is scheduled for a House Committee.

For Freedom,

Dudley Brown<br

For anyone who will apply for a permit to carry, for someone just considering it, or for the citizen who simply wants to know more about personal safety this class is a must.

While there are a great number of firearms instructors in Colorado teaching these classes — some good, some not so good — none have the experience of being the pro-gun lobbyist who shaped Colorado’s concealed carry law in the decade-long battle it took to pass a “shall issue” law, and few deal with the law’s implications on a daily basis.

Our Instructor

Dudley Brown is a lifetime shooter and longtime firearms instructor, in addition to his role as Rocky Mountain Gun Owners’ Executive Director and head lobbyist.

Brown has been involved deeply in the concealed carry issue for decades, most notably as the main lobbyist at Colorado’s State Capitol.

One of the most important things a permit holder should know are how Colorado’s concealed carry law is administered, where a citizen can carry, and where — by statutory prohibition or bureaucratic regulation — citizens are not allowed to carry concealed.

Of course, safe gunhandling is also a vital part of any firearms training course, and something RMGO takes seriously — and works to instill in our students.

The class takes just one night, and you’ll leave with a certificate as proof of your completion of the class.

We believe you’ll also leave with a solid foundation to build upon.

In the class you’ll hear a broad-ranging discussion on such issues as:

Why Carry a Concealed Handgun?

Basic Handgun Safety

Choosing a Handgun and Ammunition

Legal Use of Deadly Force

Carrying Concealed in the Real World — tips, tricks and gray areas

Carry Methods – Holster styles

Defending your Rights

And much, much more.

This is a safe, fun class, with a lively discussion and some eye-opening perspectives.

Please note: this class does not contain a live-fire component. Students are urged throughout the class to obtain live-fire instruction in addition to the basic Handgun Safety Course.

Also note: this class satisfies the legal requirements for any and all permits issued in the state of Colorado (and many other states as well).

Vermont Carry

Is our goal and RMGO has long held the belief that training should be voluntary, not mandatory. No other group — none — can lay claim to opposing government-mandated training for concealed carry for the decade-long battle for concealed carry. In fact, we’ve been advocating for true freedom — a Vermont-style concealed carry law (if you can legally possess a firearm, you can carry, without a “big-brother-may-I”) — since the group’s inception, and will continue to push for it.

Voluntary vs. Government-mandated training — That doesn’t mean we are opposed to training. Anyone who owns a firearm should get as much quality training as they can possibly afford. We are, however, opposed to government-mandated training. And one of the reasons we are conducting concealed carry classes is that we believe citizens already have to jump through too many hurdles to obtain a concealed handgun permit. Therefore, we offer the least onerous class the law will allow while still covering everything a citizen needs to know before acquiring a permit.

Monthly Northern Colorado classes — We are currently scheduling monthly concealed carry classes in the Fort Collins area on the second Monday of each month.

Note: Class space is limited, so sign up online now to save your seat.

RMGO class valid statewide — Our Concealed Carry class satisfies the legal requirement set forth in Colorado law. This means every sheriff’s office in Colorado must accept our class, or we’ll sue them. Understand that some sheriff’s offices are trying to make their own law by adding requirements for live-fire, but state law simply doesn’t allow them to do that. Colorado law (C.R.S. 18-12-201.3) stops Sheriffs from implementing rules and/or actions that place a burden on the applicant beyond the law. 18-12-202.5(c) defines a “Handgun Training Class” as “A firearms safety course or class that is offered and taught by a certified instructor.”

We offer a money-back guarantee that our training is valid under current Colorado law, and will be accepted by your sheriff.

RMGO Life Members — Our training classes are free to RMGO Life Members. If you’d like to become one, you can do so here.

Classes in your area — Though we are only offering training in Northern Colorado right now, RMGO can do private classes and those set up for your home town. To set one up, contact RMGO at our office for the details. RMGO is also seeking coordinators for training classes in Grand Junction and Colorado Springs. If you would like to help put a class together, we’ll come down to teach it. (As a general rule, you’ll need 10 or more students lined up for the class prior to scheduling it with our office)

Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

Colorado - -(AmmoLand.com)- Thanks to the efforts of Larimer County Commissioner Tom Donnelly and the staff at Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, there was no confusion about the right of citizens to carry concealed handguns at this weekend’s Republican State Convention.

Just weeks ago, RMGO activists noted that the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland – the site for the 2010 Republican State Convention – listed all firearms, including those carried by permit holders, as being banned at that facility.

One problem: it’s a taxpayer-built and owned facility, and state law doesn’t allow them to ban concealed carry.

RMGO staff talked to the managers of that facility, who were unwilling to budge, so we contacted the ultimate authority for that facility, namely a County Commissioner.

Commissioner Tom Donnelly acted within minutes of finding out about this attempt to discourage self defense.

And just like that, within hours of finding out about this ban, RMGO – and more notably, Tom Donnelly – fixed it.

If you run into Commissioner Donnelly in the future, thank him.

About:
National Association for Gun Rights

Colorado --(AmmoLand.com)- Despite the looming specter of the U.N. Small Arms Treaty, attempts to ban all private firearm sales and establish a national gun registry, gun rights activist do have cause to celebrate.

The increasingly acrimonious battle over right to carry on campus is becoming a winning battle ground for gun rights activists.

Just last week the National Association for Gun Rights and our Colorado ally, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (I serve as Executive Director of both organizations), scored a decisive victory for concealed carry on campus. Working with Students for Concealed Carry on Campus at CSU, our attorney filed suit against Colorado State University over their attempt to ban self-defense on campus.

Under pressure from the lawsuit and a recent appeals court ruling that overturned a similar ban at the University of Colorado, CSU officials rescinded their anti-gun policy.

In light of CSU’s decision, the Colorado Community College system released a statement acknowledging that students, faculty, and citizens have the legal authority to defend themselves on community college campuses across the state.

It is outrageous that these universities and secondary education facilities would try to make students and faculty into potential victims, especially when their policy is in direct contradiction to existing state law.

I believe that over the next several years we’re going to see the right-to-carry on campus being pushed across the country.

Rest assured, the National Association for Gun Rights will continue to be a leader for the self-defense rights of students and faculty across the country.

Please know that is was you – the donors, members and activists – who made this possible. class="wp-caption-text">Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

Colorado - -(AmmoLand.com)- Today the CSU Board of Governor’s voted to rescind their illegal ban on concealed carry on campus.

“They didn’t have a legal leg to stand on,” said Dudley Brown, Executive Director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners (RMGO). “We told them in January, in no uncertain terms, that state law did not allow them to create their own gun ban. Unfortunately, it took a lawsuit to force them to back down.”

RMGO filed suit against CSU’s Board of Governors on April 15th, proving that unelected board had no authority to override existing state law, which explicitly allows permit holders to carry on college campuses. A day later, a Colorado Appeals Court ruled against CU’s ban on carrying.

“This has been a good couple of weeks for law-abiding citizens who want to defend themselves on Colorado campuses, and a terrible week for criminals who assume no one is able to defend themselves on campuses,” Brown said. “We’re now going to track the policy of every secondary education campus in the state — every community college, every university, all of them — and file suit against those who attempt to violate Colorado law.”

“The citizens, students and faculty at these facilities should thank the members and donors of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, the organization responsible for correcting these errant bureaucrats, and Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, who put a lot of hard work into this battle.”

Rocky Mountain Gun Owners is Colorado’s largest gun rights organization.

About:
Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

Colorado - -(AmmoLand.com)- At a campaign rally on a cold winter evening, thousands of individuals crowd around a stage to hear a Presidential candidate speak on life, liberty, and the Constitution. Homemade signs litter the crowd as the fiery congressman from Texas speaks to a sea of activists, many whom had never before taken an interest in politics. As he concludes, cheers erupt from the mass of people as they celebrate the one man speaking what no other candidate dares to say. Ron Paul has ignited a crowd desperate for a leader and in doing so has energized the thousands in attendance, as he asks for their support in the upcoming Presidential primary.

The next day, about 75 percent of them do not show up to vote.

The above illustrates the difficulty facing the liberty movement today—the willingness of its participants to engage in philosophical discussion, policy talk, or social activism, but their reluctance to engage in political action, the only thing that counts on Election Day.

Unfortunately this has even bled into the issue of gun rights, self-defense, and second amendment advocacy. Individuals who claim to support the rights of gun owners are too often preoccupied with personal recognition or high ideals, instead of focusing on eliminating bad policies and enacting good ones.

Even nationally recognized organizations that pledge to defend the rights of gun owners often find themselves caught up in the pomp and circumstance of putting on a show for the cameras instead of focusing on tangible results.

With the shock of last year’s election fading and 2010’s mid-term elections rapidly approaching, we see many in the gun rights movement cling to the same techniques that have proven unsuccessful in political campaigns.

I count myself tremendously blessed to have experienced a number of facets of the liberty movement. I have been able to volunteer for Ron Paul in his candidacy for President as well as separately learn from many in the gun rights movement who have spent decades defending the Constitutional amendment that protects all others.

Later…
When I served as campaign manager for a Ron Paul-endorsed candidate for Congress, I was able to put those skills into practice. This essay relates what I have learned.

Liberty candidates and their supporters all too often believe a fancy website with an automated real-time ticker will revolutionize the campaign and bring immediate media attention to their cause. They believe simply announcing a “money bomb” will be all that is needed to reform the system and transform their candidacy from an upstart radar blip to a powerhouse ready to take on the political world. But, as wonderful as money bombs and interactive website assuredly are, there is more to real politics.

Despite the signs, the blimps, and the unmatched enthusiasm of Ron Paul’s supporters, on election night when the returns came back the votes were not there. Not in Iowa, or New Hampshire, or Wyoming, or Michigan. Paul’s supporters were often quick to react to the tactics of the political establishment and media, tactics we believed to be underhanded (and which oftentimes were). But the liberty movement limited its effectiveness when it only played defense. Ron Paul’s supporters watched political talking heads dismiss him as a fringe candidate, who purportedly had a handful of supporters spamming polls with text-message votes, and their only response was to complain about the bias they were up against. Just as gun rights advocates should not expect favorable editorials from the New York Times or the Huffington Post, we should never be content to sit and complain. We can whine about how unfair the media is and how we will never be given a fair shake, or we can do something about it. We can hit the establishment where it really hurts, not in the online polls, but where the political class is most vulnerable—in local elections and the grassroots organizations that are the base of the political pyramid.

Dedicated To Destroying Principles
One look to our town councils, state houses, or local political parties will show us the people we are up against. Many of these folks have dedicated their lives to destroying the principles we believe in.

They care nothing about the right to self-defense or those they hurt by refusing to allow honest Americans to carry firearms.

They have sold gun owners down the river for only a paycheck, their proverbial 30 pieces of silver, and sometimes only out of a desire to have a title or control an office. In response we have committed ourselves not to taking their titles and offices away from them but instead to complaining about the system and offering symbolic actions. If elections were won by rifle shoots, turnouts at gun shows, or empty holster protests, our movement would have achieved victory 20 times over. Instead we will continue to lose, and lose badly, until we realize it is up to us, as the next generation of freedom advocates, to learn how to win.

The starry-eyed second amendment activist believe a sound philosophy is what should take precedence above everything else in political life. He believes an un-comprising adherence to principle should trump hard-won victories, party politics, and a desire for power, fame, and fortune. The starry-eyed activist is 100 percent correct. It is in this that the true believer in the second amendment has the advantage.

When working for a political nonprofit that would by all definitions be described as one run by “Establishment Republicans,” I was often railed and berated for my defense of the Constitution, and the second amendment. As a gun owner living in the state of Virginia I am permitted to open carry by law. I exercised this right and carried a properly holstered pistol to the office each and every morning.

Though the office was filled top to bottom with self-described “conservatives,” day after day I was railed and berated for promoting my Constitutional right to carry a firearm. I was informed that cowboys weren’t allowed in the building, told I “wasn’t being responsible,” was called named on the email list-serve, and at times had to sit and patiently wait as co-workers brought Nerf guns down from other floors to engage in a “shootout” outside my office.

After one such defense of the ideals of our founding fathers I was called “young,” “naive,” and with a sigh and a chuckle was lectured by colleagues about how they, “Remembered when they were that immature and idealistic.” My response was simple: “good.” While I will not always be young, I hoped I would always be idealistic—always willing to put principle ahead of politics, even if that meant costing myself an election, being called names, or remaining unpopular with those in power.

The advocates of gun rights have a tremendous advantage over their entrenched political counterparts. While we face a foe that has the techniques and technical knowledge to win elections, we take solace in the fact that our foe is morally empty. Training oneself how to write a direct-mail letter, assemble a press release, or become a better public speaker is merely a skill that can be learned and refined. But having that skill and choosing to throw away political prestige in order adhere to a sound Constitutional philosophy is a road few people are willing to take. However, this does not mean we who support gun rights should fail to cultivate the technical skills our opponents’ possess. Our side must learn how to succeed not just on the Internet or in the journals of intellectual thought, but in the political races and campaigns that shape our government. Gun owners are among the most dedicated individuals one will find in any cause, political or non. Very few are willing to budge on any aspect of the second amendment no matter how small.

Yet this philosophical correctness is not enough to initiate the transformation that is needed in government. Believing you are correct is not enough. Even actually being correct is not enough.

Politics is not an art, expressive and creative, no matter how much so many of us want it to be. Campaigns and elections are very much a science, with tried and true methods that move votes from the living-room couch to the election booth. The science of elections is based on numbers, statistics, and techniques that have concrete goals.

Yard Signs vs Robo-Calls
Yard signs are popular campaign memorabilia—but yard signs do not vote. Volunteer for any candidate in virtually any race, and you will be hounded about yard signs. The candidate always wants to know what color they will be, where they will go, and how many can be placed along the highway. Yet yard signs are something that campaigns seem to do just for the sake of doing them; statistically they have an extremely low impact on changing minds, switching votes, or mobilizing the base.

By contrast, as much as many of us complain about automated pre-recorded messages from candidates—robo-calls—there is a reason campaigns, even in the age of advanced social networking, continue to do them: they work. Despite the anecdotal stories you hear about someone becoming angry at the flood of automated calls he has been receiving and pledging not to vote for that candidate out of spite … it does not happen. Ask yourself, if you truly believed in the message a pro-gun candidate was proclaiming and thought he was the only candidate in that race would defend your right to own a firearm, would you really refuse to vote for him simply because of a few automated telephone calls? If so, then statistically you weren’t going to vote for him anyway. Such voters are negligible.

Some dismiss old-fashioned direct-mail letters that include surveys and requests for contributions as either out of touch with the new way of doing things or simply as junk mail from groups that are out to make a quick buck. In reality, direct mail serves as a proven method to gauge what issues are important to an organization’s membership base. An organization which takes the time to find our which specific second amendment issue is most important to you, is an organization setting itself up to best serve you and its members.

From a fundraising angle, there is a reason groups send out physical mail asking for help to fund project proposals: it works. Every part of a direct mail letter is a scientific instrument used to provide the best product and service to the member of that organization. Direct mail should not turn off gun owners but instead bring them into a world where they too can learn what works and what doesn’t when it comes to recruiting for a cause or spreading a message. There is a reason most direct-mail letters are printed in courier font. It is because most donors to political organizations are over 70 years old, and the font reminds many of them of a typewriter. It gives them a tactile connection to an organization with which they feel philosophical sympathy.

What is effective and what is easy are often two completely different things.

The most effective way of changing minds and recruiting new voters or members is the tactic so many of us shy away from—door-to-door recruitment. Political operatives, campaign workers, and volunteers all agree when asked what the best technique is to influence voters: knocking on their door, handing them a piece of literature, and talking with them. Despite right-wing jeers about Barack Obama’s label as a “community organizer, the ability to sort and mobilize a community is the most basic and most effective way to win in politics.

A successful movement breaks down its locality as specifically as possible in order to appoint outgoing organizers who are a good match for their areas. In the realm of political campaigns, the selection of “precinct captains” is made to ensure that those in charge have a friendly face and a strong tie to the community. In today’s world, we could live almost our entire lives without ever leaving our house. Delivery services, tele-commuting, and Netflix have made it theoretically possible never to need to engage another person in meaningful conversation. Yet despite all of our modern conveniences, deep down people long for individual connections.

Talking With A Complete Stranger
Going out of your way and initiating conversation with a complete stranger can be nerve-racking. You will undoubtedly run into individuals who make it quite clear that you are not allowed on their property again, especially when you mention how much you love guns. But the most important question to ask of yourself about that is, “So what?” We pay respect to a congressman from Texas who at age 72 sought the nomination for president despite being harassed, bullied, and excluded from debates by members of his own political party, and yet we are unwilling to endure the discomfort that might occur from an interaction on a neighbor’s porch?

A little awkward conversation is a small price to pay in the fight for liberty.

You don’t have to wait for the next campaign season to become active—organizing can, and should, be done everywhere and all the time. Instead of talking about the poor leadership that exists within your local political party, force a change. Find out the date of the next election for party chairman and spend the next several months recruiting gun friendly individuals who live in your county. Use established political techniques to build a network of activists and then file the paperwork to become a candidate. Make it clear that under your leadership the party will take a solid stand on the second amendment and will never leave a fellow gun owner out in the cold. Instead of talking about philosophy and the need to bring in new leadership to the county party, become the vehicle that accomplishes it.

Familiarize yourself with the Campaign for Liberty and make it a point to visit their web site each day. The organization formed by Ron Paul has established a national local coordinator program, offers new featured articles every morning, and hosts both statewide and regional conferences containing some of the best political training you will ever receive. Those who adhere to the ideals of freedom no longer have any excuse for not getting deeply involved. Through groups like the Campaign for Liberty, you can learn the political techniques you need to wrest control of government from those who have contributed to its overgrowth.

Your fellow gun owners do not need your homemade signs or your blog posts. They need votes to win their elections and restore strict constitutional government. There must come a time when each defender of liberty says “enough” and commits himself to a struggle that enacts change rather than merely discussing it. That time is now. This is your country, and it’s being taken from you one election at a time. Take it back.

About:
Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

Colorado - -(AmmoLand.com)- Colorado State has been rattling it’s empty saber scabbard for years about a “No Firearms Policy”, but this week the (bad) idea reached a fevered pitch.

After the CSU Faculty Council (read: Liberal, freedom-hating professors) recommended to CSU President Tony Frank to ban firearms on campus, the student government quickly stood on the side of freedom and asked Frank to leave the policy as it is (i.e. permit holders, including students, can carry).

Then, Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden, himself first elected as sheriff solely due to the concealed carry issue (the previous RINO sheriff had refused to issue permits), publicly told CSU that his office (which controls the only jail in the county) would not enforce any ban on permit holders, wouldn’t participate in detaining any valid permit holders, and his jail would not hold them. He also added that he didn’t think CSU had the legal authority to enforce a ban that is contrary to state law.

And, despite a barrage of letters and calls from State Legislators, citizens and CSU Alumni, the CSU Board of Governors today recommended to President Frank (who makes the final decision) to ban all firearms on campus.

Understand that there are a few different issues here:

Banning faculty and students, via employment contracts and student code of conduct contracts, is an end-run around the state policy, and may or may not be legal.

Banning all firearms on campus, even with a permit, is a much longer step. And clearly, this is not legal, as Colorado law doesn’t allow that, and even a liberal judge (the Meyers decision in 2004) ruled that Denver couldn’t make it’s own concealed carry rules, despite being a “home rule” city. How, then, could a taxpayer-funded public university?

Colorado University’s Board of Regents voted many years ago to make their campuses “gun free”, but CU’s Regents are constitutionally created, and elected. CSU has nothing of the sort. So unelected bureaucrats are making policy in direct and flagrant opposition to Colorado law.

Did the Colorado legislature, in 2003′s SB24, intend to have permit holders walk on campus armed?

As the only professional pro-gun lobbyist to endure the 9-year battle for “Shall Issue” concealed carry in Colorado, RMGO Executive Director Dudley Brown made it clear that this issue was addressed, routinely.

“This issue was addressed routinely, and though the NRA tried many times to include campus-carry bans, the legislature rejected it,” said Brown, a gun lobbyist for the last 16 years. “The final bill, passed in 2003, explicitly allowed permit holders to carry on campus, but apparently some bureaucrats believe their students should be defenseless.”

“Virginia Tech, Columbine High School, and every gun free zone sends one message: it’s a Criminal Safezone, where citizens are defenseless,” Brown said. “We’ll fight this ban in court, as it is clear that liberal academia isn’t going to stand for freedom.”

Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

Windsor, CO --(AmmoLand.com)- If you’ve paid attention to the trends (and that’s what we do here at RMGO) you’ve noticed that since the “Shall Issue” concealed carry bill passed the Colorado legislature in 2003, many municipalities have decided to create their own ordinances regarding firearms.

This is, of course, usually in direct contradiction to state law.

Local governments may not willy-nilly ban firearms in public buildings, unless they take some very costly steps to make that facility “safe” for the then-disarmed citizens. But that doesn’t stop them from trying.

Other cities try a different method: they simply post “No Firearms” signs on the doors, usually knowing full well they do not have the authority to stop concealed handgun permit holders unless they install metal detectors at every entrance and place full-time security personnel there.

Sometimes these cities just make up their own rules, never stopping to think that they can’t do so. After all, government can do what it wants, right? The town of Castle Rock is just such a town.

As you can see from this picture of the entrance to City Hall (photo taken by yet another RMGO member/activist), this sign gives the impression that citizens are not allowed to carry firearms in this public facility even if carrying concealed with a permit.

Colorado Revised Statute 18-12-214(1)(a) makes carrying a concealed handgun valid “…In all areas of the state, except as specifically limited in…” other sections of law. And, unless these municipalities go to the extra steps and expense (in these days of budget cuts, very few cities can afford it), they have no choice.

RMGO contacted the city of Castle Rock after a member took pictures of the sign at the entrance to Town Hall. It took quite time, but with the diligence of an activist and RMGO’s staff staying on task, they have now changed that sign to adequately inform citizens that carrying is indeed legal in that building — with a permit.

Now, we simply have to expand that program to the dozens — maybe hundreds — of municipalities who are also skirting the law.

What can you do? Donate to Rocky Mountain Gun Owners so that we have the staff time to follow up and fix these problems as we find them.

About:
Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

Windsor, CO --(AmmoLand.com)- Daily, we’ve being deluged by well-meaning gun owners who are scared that a bill called “SB-2099″ has passed Congress secretly, and that you must now list your firearms on your IRS 1040 forms. If you fell prey to this e-mail hoax, you need to join a real gun rights group you trust. There are a great number of indicators in this e-mail that prove the sender is not to be trusted.

“This bill will become public knowledge 30 days after it is voted into law.”

Baloney. I don’t trust the scumbuckets in Washington, D.C. either.

But a bill can’t become law without “public knowledge” or without a vote. If this were possible, is there any doubt the liberals would use it to immediately enact their gun control fantasies? The only thing stopping them is…well, frankly, you.

Another thing that tells you this isn’t accurate is that the US Senate doesn’t list them as “SB 2099″ or “SB-2099″. It would be “S. 2099″.

The third glaring indication that it isn’t real is that when you do a search of “S. 2099″ or even “2099″ from the US Senate website, it returns nothing.

I’m a former US Senate employee (Sen. Bill Armstrong’s staff), and still have a lot of contacts on the Hill. So I’ve got a good handle on federal legislation — we track federal legislation here:

http://www.nationalgunrights.org/billwatch.shtml

The one thing they did get right is that 2099 was, at one time, a bill in the U.S. Senate… in 2000. And yes, it was a gun control disaster.

It didn’t get anywhere, but 9 years later it’s not still alive.

However, this illustrates why we exist: There’s a lot of misinformation out there — especially on the internet — and gun owners need someone they trust take the time to decipher it. They want to know what’s happening without being scammed, so they become members of groups they trust.

If you are sent this e-mail, forward our above reply, with a note from you to the sender and all the recipients:

“I asked a gun lobbyist I trust about the legislation you referenced, “SB-2099″. And, as you can see from this 15-year veteran of the wars to save our freedoms, the referenced legislation isn’t as advertised.

There are plenty of real threats to our right to keep and bear arms.

Let’s put our energy into fighting them, not ghosts.

That’s why I’m a member of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners: I trust them to know what’s happening and alert me when my help is needed.

If you live in Colorado, you need to be a member. There is no other group in Colorado who truly defends our rights without compromise.

<a
