BEAVERTON, Ore. –-(AmmoLand.com)- In launching its new Tactical Optics Division, Leupold® has assembled a team with the military experience, combat optics knowledge and engineering expertise to meet battlefield and product service requirements around the world.

The division is led by Kevin Trepa, vice president of tactical sales and marketing. Trepa brings an extensive background in global military operations, business leadership and academic achievement.

Trepa’s active and reserve military career as a Marine Corps infantry officer spans 24 years. Commissioned as a second lieutenant after completing an ROTC scholarship at Boston University, his initial assignment to the 1st Marine Division in California included command at both the platoon and company levels. Trepa participated in numerous global deployments and participated in both conventional and special operations in Asia and the Middle East, including combat service in Desert Storm. While subsequently serving a tour in Washington, DC, he completed a master’s degree in national security studies at Georgetown University.

After leaving active duty, Trepa attended the University of California, San Diego, where he completed his international MBA with a focus on East Asia. He was subsequently employed by Sony Electronics, Inc. While at Sony, he remained in the Marine Reserves where he was promoted to Colonel in 2006. After 9/11, Trepa served two combat tours in Iraq and a tour in Eastern Africa. During his service in Iraq, he was the chief of operations and ran the Strategic Operations Center for General Petraeus in Baghdad, overseeing the day-to-day operations for the “surge.” Trepa’s combat decorations include four Air Medals with Combat “V” for valor and two Bronze Stars.

Trepa’s eight-year career at Sony included a series of senior management and executive positions in logistics, manufacturing, supply chain and sales operations. Prior to joining Leupold in 2009, he served as Sony’s vice president of global supply chain operations.

Other tactical division team members:

• Moe Bierig, tactical program manager. Bierig holds a degree in mechanical engineering, and is a registered professional engineer (PE) with a MBA from Northwestern University. His 10-year career at Leupold includes positions in research and development, quality assurance and engineering. Bierig served as assembly and packaging manager prior to joining the tactical division team. Prior to Leupold employment, he managed at the senior level for three companies. Bierig has an extensive background in the medical instrumentation industry. In addition, he spent three years in the Army Corp of Engineers in Southeast Asia.
• Ray Brock, tactical product line manager. Brock has more than 20 years experience as a project manager in the commercial and residential construction field. He joined Leupold in 2008.
• Christopher O’Connor, manager of the Leupold Tactical Division’s East Coast sales office. Hired by Leupold in January 2010, O’Connor recently retired from the U.S. Marine Corps at the rank of Colonel after serving more than 30 years. A former helicopter pilot, he spent the majority of his Marine Corps career in operational units stationed around the world. O’Connor’s last operational assignment was with the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing where he served as the assistant wing commander. Prior to retiring, he worked as the commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, Calif., where he was recognized for his innovative leadership and management. O’Connor has a master’s degree in organizational management.
• Jeremiah Rowley, tactical sales specialist. Rowley served as a United States Marine for more than 10 years, with two combat tours in Iraq and various deployments to other countries as a combat engineer and an instructor in nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. He also served as a platoon sergeant, battalion operations and training NCO, range coach and range safety officer. Rowley joined Leupold in 2009.
• Steve Van Metre, tactical sales and training specialist. With a background in law enforcement and a long-time SWAT sniper, Van Metre runs “Team Leupold,” the company’s sponsored 3-gun team. He joined Leupold in 2008.
• Andrea Avolio, contracts specialist. Avolio was an enlisted member of the Oregon Army National Guard for six years. She is a graduate of Oregon State University, majoring in business administration. Avolio graduated from Lewis and Clark Law School, Portland, Ore., in 2007, and passed the 2008 Oregon State Bar examination. She is a current member of the Oregon State Bar. Avolio joined Leupold in 2009.
• Pamela Lo, marketing and business planner. Lo’s background includes experience with the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service in the aviation and transportation department, and strategic business consultation. She received two degrees from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD): a BA in international economics and a Master’s in international business administration. Lo joined Leupold in 2009.

In general, most of the scopes appear to originate from Hong Kong (People’s Republic of China), and have “Leupold Mark 4” laser engraved on the bottom of the turret in a silver etch, while the black ring on the objective is etched in white and does not include the name “Leupold.” An authentic Mark 4 riflescope will always be engraved black on black and have the name “Leupold” engraved on the black ring.

Remember the Wind During Long Range Shots

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. --(AmmoLand.com)- The fall hunting seasons are upon us, and now is a great time for hunters to sight in their firearms to be sure they are on target when they go afield, according to Paul Johansen, Assistant Chief of Game Management of the Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR).

“Early fall is a pleasant time to visit a shooting range, and public shooting ranges are normally less crowded during this time of year,” said Johansen. “I encourage adults to use this time to introduce our youth to the enjoyment of shooting, and to use this opportunity to instruct youngsters in the methods of safe gun handling.”

The proper sighting in of a firearm involves the use of a safe shooting range, a solid shooting support and a few basic shooting techniques. A shooting range should have a safe backstop and be at least 500 feet from any residence or place where people gather. DNR maintains many public shooting ranges statewide and these facilities are excellent places to sight in a firearm. The location of these ranges can be found on the DNR Web site at www.wvdnr.gov.

Sighting in Techniques
While sighting in a firearm, the firearm should be solidly supported on a sturdy shooting bench using sandbags or a commercial shooting rest. Always place the fore stock of the firearm, not the barrel, on the support. Stock and sight mounting screws should be checked for proper tightness. Be sure that the ammunition is the correct caliber for the firearm and sight in with the ammunition that will be used for hunting. Several different brands and types of ammunition may need to be tested to determine the one best suited for a particular firearm.

Always wear proper eye and ear protection when shooting and be sure other persons nearby are also wearing this protection. Try to time your sighting in sessions so the sun is not shining directly into your face or onto your sights. A sandbag placed between the rear of the stock and your shoulder will greatly reduce felt recoil of heavy recoiling firearms. Assume a comfortable shooting position so your muscles are relaxed. Position the firearm’s sights on the target by adjusting the support so the support holds the firearm on target and little or no effort on your part is required.

Relax, take a deep breath, slowly let the breath out and then smoothly pull the trigger with the pad of the shooting finger when the sights are properly aligned on the target. Be careful not to use the joint area of the shooting finger and do not jerk the trigger in anticipation of the firearm firing. After firing the shot, follow through smoothly and relax before looking at the target or firing another shot.

Fire a three or five shot group, determine the center of the group, and make sight changes if necessary. Follow the firearm or scope manufacturer’s instructions to make the necessary sight adjustments. Fire several more groups, allowing the barrel to cool between groups, to determine if the firearm is properly sighted in. When you are confident that the firearm is properly sighted in, practice shooting several groups from the various unsupported field shooting positions (standing, kneeling, sitting, prone) that likely will be used when hunting.

“Going afield with a properly sighted in firearm will enhance your enjoyment of hunting in the Mountain State,” Johansen concluded.

There are two DOA reticles available on a variety of Bushnell riflescopes – the DOA 600™ and DOA 250™. Both are etched glass reticles that are easy to see in any light condition and are unaffected by recoil.

Bushnell Dead On Accurate Scopes

The DOA 600 is calibrated for centerfire rifles with aim points calibrated at 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 yards. The DOA 250 was designed for use with in-line muzzleloaders (with magnum loads) with aiming points at 100, 150, 200 and 250 yards.

Trophy hunters will appreciate the new Rack Bracket feature of the DOA reticle. To estimate the antler size of a potential trophy deer, with the scope at full power each aiming point has a Rack Bracket reference linethat measures 24 inches (the average distance between the tips of a mule deer’s ears) at the indicated yardage. The Rack Bracket hash marks on each crosshair indicate 17 inches or the average width from ear tip to ear tip for whitetail deer.

This new line of elite riflescopes and binoculars is manufactured in Japan using premium Japanese glass and ascends to the top of the Weaver line. The Super Slam series is scheduled for a mid-year 2009 release.

What Makes A Premium Scope
Engineered to meet the strict standards of the legendary Weaver name, the new Super Slam scopes elevate the Weaver brand with:

• Powerful 5 time magnification.
• Fully multi-coated lenses with an extra hard coating on exterior lenses.
• Side focus parallax adjustment on most models.
• Argon purged tubes to eliminate internal fogging

Additional features that make the Super Slam series a premier line of optics include resettable, pull-up turrets which eliminate the hassle of lost turret caps and one inch, one-piece tube construction for waterproof/shockproof/fogproof performance.

For Those Who Appreciate 30Mm Tubes
For shooters who prefer 30mm tubes, the Super Slam series includes the Euro Style (MSRP: $599.95 – $954.49) scopes. Containing all the same cutting-edge technology and advancements as the one inch tube Super Slams, the Euro Style series boast a larger tube dimension, first focal plane reticles, additional magnification ranges and illuminated reticle option.

Super Slam Binoculars Round Out Series
The Super Slam series also includes 8.5×45mm and 10.5×45mm binoculars. Each come with binocular strap system and feature SHR lens coating for maximum light transmission, extendable eyecups and roof prism design with SK and BaK-4 prism glass. Additional design enhancements include a focus lock so preferred adjustments can be locked in for the viewer and ED glass for the ultimate in light gathering ability. Torture tested from -20 degrees to +150 degrees Fahrenheit, these binoculars are rugged and ready for any outdoor adventure.
