COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –-(AmmoLand.com)- USA Shooting is pleased to announce that pistol shooter Keith Sanderson (San Antonio, Texas) and shotgun shooter Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) have been selected as the 2009 USAS Athletes of the Year.

These athletes were chosen based on the USAS Athlete of the Year Nomination and Selection Procedure, which is a points system that rewards performance in major competitions.

Sanderson, a 2008 Olympian, earned the Male Athlete of the Year honor after an outstanding World Cup season in 2009, winning an unprecedented three medals on the ISSF World Cup circuit. Sanderson captured the gold at the Beijing World Cup, silver in Changwon, Korea and bronze at the World Cup Munich in the Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event. Sanderson also grabbed fifth place at the Milan World Cup. In addition, Sanderson finished in third place at the 2009 Rifle/Pistol Fall Selection Match at Fort Benning, Ga.

For the third consecutive year, four-time Olympian Rhode was selected as the USA Shooting Female Athlete of the Year. A four-time Olympic medalist, Rhode shot her way to two World Cup medals this year, claiming the silver in San Marino and the bronze in Munich in the Women’s Skeet event. Rhode was also the 2009 National Champion and finished in first place at the 2009 Shotgun Fall Selection Match, earning a spot on the 2010 World Shooting Championship team. Rhode also finished seventh at the 2009 Shotgun World Championships.

Sanderson and Rhode were selected as the overall USAS Athletes of the Year, but USAS also recognizes the Discipline Athletes of the Year, who earned the highest number of points in each discipline.

U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.) was the top male athlete for rifle, while Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.) won the honor for women’s rifle for the fourth year in a row, and USAMU member Josh Richmond (Hillsgrove, Pa.) had the highest number of points for men’s shotgun. Sanderson is also the Male Athlete of the Year for pistol and Rhode is the Female the Athlete of the Year for the shotgun discipline. A female pistol shooter was not chosen this year as there were no female pistol shooters who met the minimum point requirement.

McPhail had an excellent year in the Men’s 50m Prone Rifle event, capturing two bronze medals on the World Cup circuit, as well as the silver medal at the World Cup Final. McPhail also finished in fifth place at the World Cup Changwon and was the 2009 National Champion in Men’s Prone.

Beyerle, a 2008 Olympian, won the 2009 World Cup Final bronze medal in Women’s 50m 3 Position Rifle. She finished fourth at the World Cup in Milan and was the 2009 National Champion. She also claimed second place at the Rifle/Pistol Fall Selection Match.

Richmond captured the gold medal in the Men’s Double Trap event at the 2009 World Cup in Munich, Germany. He took home the bronze at the San Marino World Cup and finished fifth at the World Cup in Minsk. Richmond was also the 2009 National Champion and finished fourth at the Shotgun World Championships. Most recently, Richmond won the 2009 Shotgun Fall Selection Match, claiming a spot on the 2010 World Shooting Championship team.

The overall athletes of the year will be submitted to the U.S. Olympic Committee for consideration for the 2009 USOC SportsMan and SportsWoman of the Year awards, which have been presented annually since 1974 to the top overall male and female athletes within the U.S. Olympic Family.

USA Shooting Announces Keith Sanderson and Kim Rhode as 2009 Athletes of the Year

Jackson, Tennessee --(AmmoLand.com)- Recently, a friend of mine stated, “I bought a 357 revolver but I haven’t shot it in fifteen years.” He bought it for self-defense. How many people buy a handgun and stick it in a drawer? The gun is never cleaned. It is never shot. Some are never loaded. Yet, it is there to provide protection for its owner if needed.

Do you see something wrong with that picture?

Some people have the idea that if someone is breaking into their home, automobile, or place of business, they will retrieve the pistol and it will not only fire, but they will hit only what is threatening them. I am afraid most of us get our gun knowledge from Hollywood. That source is an inadequate teacher. In fact, such ignorance can get you killed.

How many folks buy an automobile and let it sit unused in their garage? How many purchase a car but refuse to learn how to drive? “Oh, I’ll learn to drive when I need to take someone to the hospital.” Sure you will.

If you are going to buy a firearm for personal protection, either to carry on your person or to keep at home, in your car, or business, take a handgun course. A good starting place is a class to obtain your carry permit. Once you have gained that permit, you need to take at least one advanced class. Is it expensive? Perhaps, but what price tag do you put on your life or that of your loved ones?

It has been proven that if you can stand and hit the bull’s-eye at seven or ten yards, you will lose about 65% or more proficiency when your life is threatened. If you have no prior training or target practice, you will hit something, but probably not the criminal. Remember, the bad guy isn’t concerned about where his bullets go, you should and must be. If your rounds go past the felon and hit an innocent person, you are legally responsible. You may be shot by the criminal and then sued by the innocent party.

You may think that you can buy a handgun and holster, strap it on and carry without some training. First, it isn’t always comfortable to carry a gun. Second, in the beginning you will think everyone knows you are carrying. It will take time to build confidence. Third, if you don’t have the practice of keeping your “cotton pickin’ finger off the trigger,” you may accidentally blow a hole through your holster and ruin a pair of trousers when reholstering! In a worse case scenario, you could shoot yourself in the leg. Fourth, it takes practice to throw back a shirt or coat, draw, get your sight picture and shoot in a life or death situation. That is why practice, practice, practice is needed. In a life threatening situation, you will revert to your least amount of training. If you have none, what would that be?

If you own a semi-automatic pistol, the dresser drawer or car glove box is not a good learning place. A semi-auto firearm may fire more rounds than a revolver and be easier to reload, but if the firearm’s weaknesses are not learned, it can become little more than a paper weight. When you load the magazine, make sure you load the cartridges in the correct direction. Yes, ignorance happens! When you insert the magazine into the handle of the pistol, make sure it “clicks” to show it is fully seated. If not, the first round fired will dislodge it and it will fall to the ground. If you are a novice under fire, you will be perplexed as to why your gun will not fire when the trigger is pulled the second time. You need to know what to do if your pistol jams and why it did. Many jams are caused by “limp-wristing.” You did not have a firm grip on the gun when firing. You need to practice reloading when the slide locks back after the last round is fired. All of these items are elementary if practiced. Without practice, it can mean the difference between a gun that functions and one that doesn’t. Which would you rather have?

I used to have a neighbor that was an agent in the FBI. The department decided to issue a new firearm. It was the Springfield 1911. After being issued the pistol, the local office went to the range and put 1,000 rounds through the gun each day for two days, just to learn how to use it. That is a good lesson to us. If you are going to purchase a pistol, I have one word for you–Practice! Your life may depend upon it!

EOTAC Hosts Free Shooting Sports Clinic at IDPA National Championship

BEIJING, China –-(AmmoLand.com)- Jeff Holguin (Yorba Linda, Calif.), a 2008 Olympian and 2009 World Championship silver medalist, earned the bronze medal in Men’s Double Trap at the ISSF World Cup Final for Shotgun in Beijing today.

Shooting on the same range where he finished in fourth place at the 2008 Olympic Games, U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member Holguin was tied for first place at 144 targets with Chinese shooters Mo Jiunjie and 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Hu Binyuan going into today’s final.

Holguin and Binyuan each shot 42 out of 50 targets in the final and ended the match tied at 186 hits. In the shoot-off for the silver medal, Holguin, who shot first, missed a target on his second pair, winning bronze with a total score of 186+3 targets and leaving Hu Binyuan the silver medal with 186+4 hits.

“If I had made it to the second spot in the shoot-off, I would probably have had a better chance,” commented Holguin after the match. “It’s great to be back on the Olympic Range of Beijing, and this time walking out with something in my hands.”

Jiunjie, who at 21-years-old was today’s youngest finalist, won the Men’s Double Trap event, claiming his first ISSF World Cup Final gold medal with a total score of 189 targets (144+45).

Sixty of the top shooters from 22 different countries qualified to take part in this year’s ISSF World Cup Final for Shotgun. These athletes qualified based on individual performances in the ISSF World Cup circuit throughout the year.

Competition continues on Sunday with U.S. shooters Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.), a four-time Olympic medalist and 2009 World Cup Munich bronze and World Cup San Marino silver medallist, along with 2009 World Cup Minsk silver medalist, Caitlin Connor (Winnfield, La.), competing in the Women’s Skeet Final. Competition will conclude on Monday with the Men’s Trap and Skeet Finals. Ryan Hadden (Pendleton, Ore), a double gold medalist on the 2009 World Cup circuit, will be competing in the Men’s Trap event in his first ever World Cup Final. Jeff Holguin Wins Bronze at Shotgun World Cup Final

BEIJING, China –-(AmmoLand.com)- Caitlin Connor (Winnfield, La.) had the highest finish for the U.S. after shooting in difficult weather conditions at the 2009 ISSF World Cup Final in Beijing today when she took fourth place in the Women’s Skeet event.

Shooting in intense snowfall, Connor, the 2009 World Cup Minsk silver medalist, entered the final tied for third place at 69 out of 75 targets with two other shooters. In the final, Connor hit 20 out of 25 targets and ended the match tied for third place at 89 targets with Russian shooter Svetlana Demina. In the shoot-off for the bronze, Demina hit her target to secure the bronze, while Connor missed and finished just off the podium in fourth place.

Christine Wenzel of Germany, the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist and reigning World Champion, won today’s match after a shoot-off with Italy’s Katiuscia Spada. Wenzel finished the match with 90+2 hits after shooting 21 targets in the final, which was the highest final score of the day. Spada placed second winning the silver with 90+0 hits.

Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.), a four-time Olympic medalist and 2009 World Cup Munich bronze and World Cup San Marino silver medalist, finished the day in eighth place with a match score of 66 targets.

Competition will conclude on Monday with the Men’s Skeet and Trap Finals. Vincent Hancock (Eatonton, Ga.), the 2008 Olympic gold medalist and 2009 World Champion, is currently holding third place in Men’s Skeet after today’s qualification with 73 out of 75 targets. Ryan Hadden (Pendleton, Ore), a double gold medalist on the 2009 World Cup circuit, is sitting in fifth place in Men’s Trap with 67 out of 75 targets.

Caitlin Connor Finishes Fourth in Skeet at World Cup Final

Competing in the 2009 Infinity Area 4 Championships, organized by the North Texas Practical Shooters and held at the Double Tap Ranch in Wichita Falls, Texas, Max won his division with a winning score of 1491.0745.

Max Michel Wins USPSA Area 4 Shooting Championship

GLEN ELDER, KS —-(AmmoLand.com)- On Saturday, Nov. 7, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will conduct an event designed to lure more youth and novice hunters into the field.

The Glen Elder Youth Shooting Challenge will begin at 1 p.m. and run through 4:30 p.m. at the Glen Elder Wildlife Area Office, just south of the US. Highway 24 and Kansas Highway 128 junction, approximately 1 mile west of Glen Elder.

Although designed for youth and beginners, everyone is welcome to participate regardless of age or experience.

Shotshells and targets will be provided. Shooters may use their own shotguns but youth model shotguns will be available for those who don’t have a shotgun.

Young hunters and their mentors participating in the youth pheasant and quail hunting season, Nov. 7-8, are encouraged to participate, and adults who bring youth may shoot, too.

Young hunters lucky enough to bag a rooster that morning before the trap shoot may enter the long tail feather contest to win prizes.

Prizes will also be awarded for the biggest quail by weight. Bring the birds (pheasant tail and spur or entire quail) any time from 1 p.m. to 4 pm. Prizes will be awarded at 4:10 pm.

Itzstein posted a total time score of 141.44 behind Jerry Miculek’s score of 123.81. Last year, Itzstein won 1st Place Open Revolver and Overall 1st Place Winner at the ICORE Cup, hosted by the Mississippi Revolver Association.

Belgrade, Serbia --(AmmoLand.com)- STI Euroteam/Team Hornady swept the Standard Division of the 2009 IV Open Delta Cup, September 4 – 6, in Belgrade, Serbia. Juan Carlos Jaime Diaz of Spain shot first place, Gregory Midgley of Germany shot second, Ralf K. Jensen of Denmark shot third, and Fabrizio Pesce of Italy shot eighth, for a team score of 5732.1635 – 677 points higher than second place, and 750 points above the third place Delta SAJ – a club consisting of Serbian special antiterrorist unit members.

“Once again we thank Hornady for the great support of the team,” said Jensen. “We couldn’t have done it without their help and Hornady’s fantastic bullets.”

In the Lady Open division, STI Euroteam/Team Hornady’s Irene Canetta of Italy shot second place. And Open shooter Emile Obriot of France placed sixth against very strong competition.

The Open Delta Cup draws approximately 400 shooters from throughout Europe, to compete in five divisions with 20 exciting stages involving hard cover, half-size targets, and distance variations requiring highly technical shooting skills and unwavering focus.

STI Euroteam Team Hornady Sweeps Standard Division at IV Open Delta Cup 2009

CAMP PERRY, OHIO –-(AmmoLand.com)- More than 300 shooters and guests attended the second annual Camp Perry Marksmanship Center Open House on Saturday, 19 September, commemorating the center’s second year of operations and a new shooter’s mural.

Visitors were treated to several activities including the dedication of the unique Antolik Mural, all-day turkey shoots on the world-class airgun range and live participation on the Ohio Army National Guard’s Engagement Skills Trainer (EST).

The Antolik Mural, a 100-foot-long by 20-foot-high handcrafted wall painting, honors current and past Camp Perry competitors, but most importantly recognizes the development of the nation’s young shooters. The mural was painted by Jerry Antolik of Hudson, Wyoming and is perhaps the largest painting of its kind dedicated to shooting sports, according to Gary Anderson, Director of Civilian Marksmanship.

At the mid-day mural dedication ceremony, Anderson praised Antolik’s work and provided a brief history of shooting sports art around the world. In traveling the sports shooting world Anderson compared the new mural to ancient archery tomb paintings in Egypt, centuries-old German murals and art he saw in China during the 2008 Olympic Games.

“To my knowledge, there is no larger mural dedicated to shooting sports in the world than the Antolik Mural,” Anderson said. “It is truly one of a kind.”

The mural depicts indoor and outdoor shooting scenes from Camp Perry and features many familiar sights including the camp’s water tower, a tractor pulling a shooter shuttle, a bald eagle and the ever-present seagulls.

But the centerpiece of the mural is a display of shooters past and present, including a row of precision air rifle shooters which dominates the center of the 100-foot-long wall at the range’s entrance.

In his remarks Antolik told the audience that the three-month project was a labor of love and he thanked the CMP for its commitment to, and vision for the development of shooting sports in the U.S.

“I’ve been coming here a long time. It’s a great place that has a special quality unlike any other,” Antolik said. “It is an honor to display my artwork here.”

“I think the sweetest thing of all is that they dedicated my mural during a turkey shoot,” he said with tongue in cheek.

Visitors who fired on the airgun range were first given a safety briefing and sporter air rifle instruction and then an opportunity to win a turkey with the best center shot in groups of 10 shooters, firing 10 shots each with sporter air rifles. In all, 30 turkeys were awarded to participants. All equipment and pellets were provided by CMP.

Austin Jess, 15 and his grandfather Ron, 68 of Fremont, Ohio participated in the open house festivities for the second year. The St. Joseph Central Catholic High School student said he’s never shot competitively but enjoys coming to the marksmanship center.

“If I had more time I’d be interested in shooting competitively,” he said. Golf, basketball and his favorite sport of baseball keep him busy though.

“Actually, it’s really relaxing, but you need a lot of focus,” he said.

Bill Keaton, 53, of Grafton, Ohio visited the center for the first time and said he was surprised by the size of the facility. Keaton is a Cleveland Center air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration.

“I plan to shoot a whole lot more when I retire, but I’m not sure yet when that’s going to happen,” Keaton said. He is a 25-year veteran controller and helped work air traffic on September 11, 2001.

Keaton shoots regularly in a 12-week handgun league near home, but caught the air rifle bug at the open house. He later purchased a reconditioned Daisy sporter rifle at the CMP store and plans to practice at home.

Jake Gladwell, 12 and his father Tim, 45, of Sandusky, Ohio also visited Camp Perry for the first time. Jake said he heard about the open at school, researched it on the Internet and convinced his dad to participate.

“He told me about it last night,” Tim said, so the Gladwells took the opportunity to shoot the turkey match and visit the National Guard’s EST adjacent to the airgun range later.

The Gladwells shoot a number of rifles and shotguns at home and said they enjoyed shooting at the CMP’s new indoor range. They said they are likely to take advantage of the weekly public practice sessions on Tuesday evenings.

“We’ve always enjoyed target shooting and this was a lot of fun,” Tim said.

Several guests visited and “shot” on the National Guard’s EST simulator with converted A4 service rifles. Participants were given the opportunity to fire in an industrial scenario on a massive video screen. The objective was to shoot oncoming enemy soldiers who ran for cover between buildings, ore piles and other structures.

Each shooter was given 30-round magazines and could fire semi-auto or in three-shot bursts. Firing in unlimited mode, participants could change out empty magazines and continue firing until time elapsed. Other than firing lasers at interactive targets and air-driven bolt actuators, the rifles function exactly like combat weapons, which saves a significant amount of ammunition for training purposes.

First Fidelity Reserve to Sponsor 2010 NRA Bianchi Cup

Kansas --(AmmoLand.com)-The KSRA Mid Range individual match was held on Saturday Sept. 12. The team match was held on Sunday the 13th. Fourteen shooters showed up for the individual match. The match is made up of four stages. Each one is 2 sighter shots and 20 shots for record at 600 yards for 200 possible points. The first two stages are fired with scope sights and the second two are fired with iron sights.

After an hour and a half rain delay we got started. After the two scoped events three people had 400 points. Three others had 399. The scores stayed close all day.

Awards were given for service rifle and match rifle classes.

• The service rifle was won by Andrew Timmons with 727-9x.
• In the match rifle class first Sharpshooter was Andrew Borkon with748-20x.
• First master went to Kelly Snider with 781-31x.
• Second High Master went to Dennis Selfridge with 797-46x
• First High Master went to Steve McGee with 799-55x
• Match winner was John Myer with 800-53x. To set a range record

A special recognition and congratulations goes to Shirley McGee. She shot a 200-18x in one scoped stage to set a range record an also a national record.

Sundays team match started with near perfect weather. The match is fired with two man teams. Each member shoots one twenty shot sting with scoped sights and one with iron sights. Coaching each other is allowed. Five teams entered.

Second placed was taken by Brad Mosiman and Greg Krebaum with a score of 796-37x

First place was taken by Steve and Shirley McGee with 798-53x

To help understand the accomplishments of these people you should know all shots are fired from the prone position with a sling as the only other support. The 600 yard target x ring is six inches in diameter. The 10 ring is 12 inches across. Throw in wind, haze, sun, pulse and normal body wiggles it gets interesting.

Smyrna, GA - -(AmmoLand.com)- The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) Nationals were held at the United States Shooting Academy in Tulsa, Oklahoma from September 23-26, 2009. Team GLOCK Shooting Squad Captain Dave Sevigny won his 8th IDPA National Championship in the Stock Service Pistol (SSP) division along with the High Gun Industry category while teammate Randi Rogers won her 3rd title in the High Lady category.

The IDPA Nationals was host to more than 350 competitors during the four day annual defensive pistol shooting tournament. Participants fired a minimum of 241 rounds through seventeen courses of fire which featured moving targets, a shoot house, low-light scenarios requiring use of a hand held flashlight, shooting from cover and prone positions including from in and around motor vehicles, with target distances ranging from three to ninety feet.

Team GLOCK Captain Dave Sevigny dominated the competition with an overall best time of 222.56 seconds and won fourteen stages in the Stock division with a GLOCK 34 in 9×19. Stock division runner-up Gordon Carrell and 3rd place finisher Phil Strader, scored 260.46 seconds and 264.01 seconds respectively with S&W-M&P pistols. Sevigny has now won the prestigious IDPA National championship eight times in ten appearances and finished in the top three overall in each contest; the only competitor to accomplish such a feat. “After beginning in the GLOCK Sport Shooting Foundation I joined IDPA so there’s some tradition here. It was a good competition and I was happy to compete at the IDPA Nationals once again,” said Sevigny.

Randi Rogers of Team GLOCK won the High Lady title in 7th place Stock/Master class with a final score of 309.42 seconds with a GLOCK 34 in 9×19. “The IDPA Nationals was a pleasant end to the 2009 shooting season. I look forward to take what I have learned throughout the season, perfect my craft during the off season and come back even stronger next year,” said Rogers. ”A favorite stage of mine was Stage 8 named “El-Prez At The Movies.” This was a 12- round, three target, Limited Vickers stage. The course of fire required a start with only six rounds in the pistol, then to draw and engage each target twice, complete a mandatory reload and re-engage each target twice with no make up shots. I shot the stage in 9.40 seconds with two points down for a total time of 10.40 seconds. This time placed me 5th out of 31 Master-class Stock division competitors on this stage,” added Rogers. Twenty-eight women, roughly 8% of the field of competitors, were entered in the ladies category in 2009. Three-time Ladies IDPA National champion Julie Goloski-Golob finished in 14th place Stock/Master class and was the High Lady runner-up at 327.78 seconds with an S&W M&P.`

Another notable finish came from Enhanced Service Pistol division champion and High Law Enforcement winner, Robert G. Vogel, who used a GLOCK 34 in 9×19 with a score of 230.47 seconds to capture his 3rd IDPA National championship.

Team GLOCK- Sevigny and Rogers Repeat as IDPA National Champions

LINCOLN, Neb. – -(AmmoLand.com)-Mariah Kenney of Beemer posted a score of 37X40 to win the annual Pressey High School Silhouette Championship on Saturday at Pressey Wildlife Management Area south of Broken Bow.

“We enjoyed great weather, great scores and a wonderful group of young shooters, families, coaches, and spectators,” said Jeff Rawlinson, assistant administrator for the Information and Education Division of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

Metallic silhouette shooters compete in the 40-round .22 rimfire match. Competitors shoot at metal targets from 66 yards to 109 yards, firing 10 rounds each at four ranges. Shooters may use a .22 rimfire sporter with iron sights, a scope-sighted rimfire or a .22 rimfire target rifle.

“All shooters have been through the Nebraska Hunter Education course, and the events put on by Match Director Matt Haumont of Broken Bow and volunteers and coaches is a tribute to the responsibility and sportsmanship of the young boys and girls,” Rawlinson said. “The shooting sports offer fun, excitement and challenge to all who participate.”

Kenney Wins Silhouette Shooting Championship

Fairfax, Va. --(AmmoLand.com)- Captain Philip Hemphill of the Mississippi Highway Patrol has won first place in the NRA’s 47th annual National Police Shooting Championships (NPSC) Shooting Range Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Hemphill’s score of 2989-215x beat out nearly 400 other law enforcement competitors, making the Captain a record-setting 10-time champion of the National Police Shooting Championships.

Returning champion Robert Vadasz, a senior agent with the U.S. Border Patrol based in Tampa, Florida, is up against nine-time champion Captain Philip Hemphill, with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. The competition is fierce.

Florida’s Robert Vadasz Challenges Mississippi’s Philip Hemphill At NRA’s National Police Shooting Championships

SMYRNA, GEORGIA --(AmmoLand.com)- Dave Sevigny, Jessie Abbate and Randi Rogers of Team GLOCK Shooting Squad will attend the GSSF GLOCK Annual Shoot to offer shooting advice and perform demonstrations in Covington, GA on September 26-27.

The event will mark the 16th year of GSSF’s largest and most prestigious event of the season. Along with the regularly scheduled competition, plenty of contests and side events will be available. Spectators are welcome and participation is encouraged.

Team GLOCK and R. Lee Ermey at GLOCK Annual Shoot XVI

Smyrna, GA --(AmmoLand.com)- Dave Sevigny, Jessie Abbate and Randi Rogers of the Team GLOCK Shooting Squad won Limited-10, Limited and Production titles at the USPSA Back to Back Nationals held September 12-19, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The competition featured 16 stages in each of the Open/Production and Limited/Limited-10/Revolver matches.

At the Production Nationals, 12 women in the 139 competitor field battled for the High Lady title. Jessie Abbate won the Production title by finishing 37th overall and 3rd A-class at 75.41%. Randi Rogers finished 3rd Lady, 72nd overall and 9th B-class at 66.89%. Both Abbate and Rogers used a GLOCK 34 in 9mm. During the competition, Jessie Abbate won 11 of 16 stages in the ladies category and shot clean without a single procedural, miss or no-shoot penalty target. Her closest competitor was runner-up Julie Goloski-Golob of S&W who was defeated by 115 match points with her M&P pistol.

Abbate said, “I fought hard for the Production match, knowing that my team mate Randi Rogers, and also Julie Goloski-Golob would be fighting hard as well. It was a tough match with a lot of noshoots, partials, and plenty of places to make mistakes, so I knew that I would have to be consistent and just keep pushing forward every day.”

Randi Rogers commented on one of her favorite stages, named “Table Choices” saying, “I thought this stage was interesting because of the movement. Moving backward can be challenging because it is important to remember to keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Overall I shot 26th out of 138 competitors on this stage with a time of 9.05 seconds and 54 out of 60 points. Shooting the USPSA Production/Open Nationals was a great learning experience for me this year. I look forward to taking the lessons I learned and building on them as I start preparing for next year’s shooting season.”

For the overall title, Team GLOCK Captain Dave Sevigny finished 2nd in a strong Production division field. Of the 138 competitors in the Production Nationals, 41 held the rank of Master and Grandmaster. Sevigny spoke highly of Ohio police officer Bob Vogel for winning the Production National championship.

“Vogel was so accurate here. The match was loaded with partial targets blocking out most of the A-zones. Someone could score 6 points on a target to someone else’s 10 and that can hurt you bad in the standings. Bob found a way to score well on nearly every stage so congrats to him on winning his second USPSA Production title.”

Both Vogel and Sevigny use GLOCK 34 pistols in Production division. GLOCK continues to lead as the #1 choice among competitors and winning performances. Competitors using GLOCK have won seven out the nine championships since USPSA introduced Production division in 2001.

Sevigny, who described his 2009 Production National match performance as “uncharacteristically erratic,” repeated last season’s rebound by winning the 2009 Limited-10 National championship using a GLOCK 35. Fifteen talented Master and Grandmasters competed among the 86 person Limited-10 field. Sevigny finished in the top 6 in all of the 15 stages, including four overall stage wins. Bob Vogel, shooting a GLOCK 24, improved his 2008 Limited-10 Nationals 7th place finish at 93.78% by placing 2nd at 99.97%.

Sevigny said, “It took a lot to overcome the point deficit I was up against with only two stages and 225 points to go. I stayed positive, worked hard and the finals worked to my favor this time.”

Sevigny is now a 9-time USPSA National champion having won the most overall Production and Limited-10 division titles with five and three respectively, and one in Limited division. Sevigny is also the only person in USPSA to finish each Production and Limited-10 Nationals competed in at 95% or better.

Randi Rogers came back from her Production defeat to claim the Limited-10 Ladies title over nine other women finishing in 32nd place at 70.91%.

“While shooting back to back nationals the challenge is to keep a strong mental game throughout both matches. After shooting the first match it was a struggle for me to let go of the events of the previous experience and concentrate on the new match but I felt confident in my shooting and was able to turn that into a National Championship,” said Rogers. Rogers used a G35 for her most recent title.

Using an S&J Custom GLOCK 24 in the Limited division, Jessie Abbate repeated as ladies national champion with a 50th place finish, 20th Master at 77.04%. Abbate defeated Lisa Munson, the only other Master class ranked woman in USPSA, by 115 match points and won 7 of 15 stages in the ladies category.

“Having shot a clean match in Production, it gave me the confidence and drive I needed to continue on for the Limited match. Shooting two Nationals back to back is very draining, since we all strive to shoot perfect every stage. But I knew what I needed to do to be able to be successful for the second match,” said Abbate.

The 2009 Ladies Limited title marks Abbate’s fifth USPSA National pistol championship and second year in a row she won Back to Back titles.

“Congratulations to Team GLOCK Shooting Squad on their performance at the Back to Back Nationals,” said Gary Fletcher, VP at GLOCK, Inc. “With the release of the Gen 4 pistol in 2010, the talented squad will have another pistol to compete with and we have great anticipation for that.”

Team GLOCK Shines at the USPSA Nationals

FORT BENNING, Ga. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Five Soldiers from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit earned berths on the 2010 U.S. World Championship team as well as spots in three 2010 World Cup events after their performances at the 2009 Fall Selection match in Kerrville, Texas.

The Women’s Trap event kicked things off and Sgt. 1st Class Theresa DeWitt became the first Soldier from the USAMU to earn a spot on the 2010 U.S. team that will travel to Munich, Germany next summer. DeWitt, a 1996 Olympian, placed first in the competition with a score of 448.

2009 World and National Champion Spc. Vincent Hancock kept his hot streak going as he won the Men’s Skeet event with a score of 515 and will defend his crown in Munich. Hancock, the 2008 Olympic Champion in this event, broke two national records in Kerrville after missing only two targets during the entire qualifying round and three targets overall. His teammate, Sgt. 1st Class Shawn Dulohery, will travel with Hancock after placing third with a score of 506 and making the U.S. team.

Capping off a good week for the USAMU were teammates Staff Sgt. Josh Richmond and Spc. Jeff Holguin in Men’s Double Trap, finishing first and second with scores of 627 and 621, respectively. Richmond experienced success in Munich in 2009, winning a World Cup event there, and will be eager to return in 2010. Holguin won a silver medal at the 2009 World Championships and will be looking to move up a step on the awardees pedestal in 2010.

USAMU Soldiers Qualify for 2010 Trapshooting World Championships

LAS VEGAS, Nev. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Jessie Abbate makes winning national titles look routine. That’s because for the second year in a row Abbate has won back-to-back national titles at the Smith & Wesson 2009 U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) National Handgun Championships.

This year Abbate claimed both the Production and Limited division women’s titles. In 2008 she was crowned the Limited and Limited-10 champion.

In the Production division match, Abbate took top honors among the lady shooters posting a final score of 1097.9378 outpacing runner-up and team Smith & Wesson member Julie Goloski-Golob by more than 111 points. Abbate’s score was also good enough to finish 37th overall among all shooters.

Golob, who resides in Glasgow, Mont., secured second place with a final score of 986.7540. In third was another Team Glock member, Randi Rogers of Durango, Colo. who shot 973.9135. Rounding out the top five were Dianna Liedorff of Sperry, Okla. in fourth with 851.0833 and Carrie Jamrogowicz of Missoula, Mont. in fifth with a final score of 799.0553.

In the Limited division where Abbate holds the rank of Master, the second highest skill level in the sport of Practical Shooting, she again put on an impressive display shooting a score of 1050.2892 and finishing over 114 points ahead of Lisa Munson of Marysville, Wash. who came in second with 935.3943. Munson shoots for Team SVI and also holds the rank of Master.

Tasha Hanish of Cave Creek, Ariz. took third finishing just behind Munson with a score of 933.3767. Carina Randolph of Richardson, Texas finished fourth shooting 923.4845 and in fifth place was Lily Chung of San Jose, Calif. with 768.0001.

The Nationals which were held at the Desert Sportsman’s Rifle & Pistol Club outside Las Vegas September 11-19 drew more than 620 top shooters from across the country and around the world.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Robert Vogel of Wapakoneta, Ohio has won the Production division title for the second year in a row at the Smith & Wesson 2009 U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) National Handgun Championships.

With a final score of 1455.9116, the 27 year old Vogel was able to again hold off Team Glock member and past national champion Dave Sevigny of Smyrna Ga. by a safe margin of over 64 points. In 2008 only 4 points separated the two shooters who now dominate this division.

Rounding out the top five were Phil Strader of Owasso, Okla. in third and just over 82 points out of first. Matthew Mink of Conway, Ark., finished in fourth and over 92 points behind and Robbie Leatham of Mesa, Ariz. took fifth, 108 point off the lead.

In the Limited-10 match, Vogel nearly defeated Sevigny again but fell to second on the last stage where a no-shoot left him just 0.481 points out of first.

Nevada – -(AmmoLand.com)- Last week, NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox, and National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) Senior Vice President Larry Keane joined U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senator John Ensign (R-NV), Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-NV), Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons (R), Clark County Commission Chairman Rory Reid, and Commissioner Tom Collins to dedicate the Clark County Shooting Park (CCSP) in Nevada.

The CCSP is a 3,000-acre park outside of Las Vegas that is devoted entirely to the shooting sports. The park was created by an Act of Congress that transferred land to Clark County from the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

The first phase of the 148-acre public shooting facility will be opening to the general public over the next few months, and will include a Shotgun Center, a Public Rifle/Pistol Center, Hunter Education Center, and an Archery Center.

“As the largest shooting park in the world, this state-of-the-art facility represents Nevada’s pride in gun ownership and shooting sports,” said Senator Reid. “In addition to providing a safe place for Nevadans to hone their shooting skills, the park will provide important firearms training and gun safety programs. I am glad to have been a part of securing land and funding for this project and I thank everyone involved with the project for making it a reality.”

KINSLEY, KS —-(AmmoLand.com)- On Saturday, Sept. 19, the Kinsley Gun Club will host its 17th Annual Kids Klassic trap shooting tournament for young shooters. Each youngster will fire at 100 targets. A $25 entry fee will include a custom T-shirt, lunch, and a chance to win a door prize, including a Remington 1100 Classic Trap shotgun, a Tri-Star SB shotgun, and one of two Remington .22-caliber rifles — all provided by area businesses and the shooting fraternity. The entry fee does not include shells.

Shooters will compete for trophies, Olympic-style medallions, shotgun shells, and other prizes in four age groups for individuals and five-person teams. Ten $100 savings bonds will be awarded by drawing, so everyone has a chance to win. Other awards include 19 flats of shotgun shells and individual trophies for four age groups with special awards to 4-H members. The top three five-shooter teams earn trophies and shells. A trophy and prize will be reserved for the top girl shooter, as well.

While everyone high school age and younger is welcome to attend, participants who enter must be strong enough to handle a shotgun safely and are expected to know the basic rules and etiquette of trapshooting. The shoot is not for beginners.

Entries (including T-shirt sizes and number of adults for lunch) must be received by Sept. 14. Fairfax, Va. --(AmmoLand.com)- The National Rifle Association will hold the 47th National Police Shooting Championships (NPSC) at the Shooting Range Park in Albuquerque, NM September 20-24, 2009.

Over 400 officers from federal, state, municipal and private agencies, as well as four foreign countries, are expected to compete in this year’s tournament.

“The National Police Shooting Championship is a gathering of the finest law enforcement shooters from around the world,” said NRA President Ron Schmeits. “There is no better place for these everyday heroes to test their skills than right here in New Mexico.”

NPSC utilizes real law enforcement shooting skills. Competitors start with guns holstered and fire timed matches with both revolvers and semi-automatic pistols from varying distances and positions. The aggregate scores from the revolver and semi-automatic pistol matches are used to crown a national champion. This year’s competition should prove to be especially spirited as defending champion Robert Vadasz, a Senior Agent with the U.S. Border Patrol, faces the return of Mississippi Highway Patrol Captain Philip Hemphill – a 9-time champ.

NPSC enjoys tremendous sponsor support from sponsors such as Davidson, H&K, FNH, Smith & Wesson, Glock, and Colt, allowing NRA to offer match and category winners one of the finest collection of prizes in all of law enforcement competitive shooting.

First held in 1962, the National Police Shooting Championship is just one of many programs directed by NRA’s Law Enforcement Activities Division. These programs are supported by the Davidson’s Law Enforcement Endowment and the Law Enforcement Training Endowment of the NRA Foundation, which includes a generous $251,000 donation from Brownells, Inc. and more than 100 other firearm related businesses.

NRA’s National Police Shooting Championship returns to Albuquerque New Mexico

FAIRFAX, VA – -(AmmoLand.com)- The final results of the NRA High Power Rifle Championship came down to the last shot of the last match, and in the end Norman Houle walked away victorious with a score of 2387-124x.

Now a three time champion, this is Houle’s first win since 2006, with his initial title coming in 2004. After a rough last couple years, Houle considered this achievement a good comeback for himself. Able to get out and practice before coming to Camp Perry this year, unlike the previous couple, Houle’s discipline showed as he sat atop the scoreboard once the final shot had been made.

Besting the 2008 champion Carl Bernosky by just one point and having four other shooters within five points, this year’s competition was very tight. “Camp Perry’s always been an endurance competition,” Houle said. “It’s more for the marathoner than the sprinter.” That certainly held true this year for Houle, who, despite not winning any individual matches in the championship, remained the most consistent overall to earn top honors.

Nine time champion Carl Bernosky came in second place with a score of 2386-125x, winning the Erdman Trophy (599-21x), Nevada Trophy (797-38x), Navy Cup (199-6x), Appreciation Cup (200-17x), and Crescent Cup (200-8x) along the way. David Tubb, the eleven time champion, placed third just behind Bernosky with a score of 2385-133x and also took home the Coast Artillery Trophy (200-15x).

The NRA High Power Rifle Championship is a 2400-point aggregate of the Vandenberg Cup, Nevada Trophy, and Clarke Trophy. Each sub-aggregate consists of four matches shot at ranges 200, 300, or 600 yards. Camp Perry’s notorious weather stayed relatively calm this year, throwing only one storm and light wind at the shooters over the course of the week.

Perhaps the most impressive story of the championships though, was the near superhuman marksmanship of Sergeant First Class Grant Singley. Shooting a 2385-102x with the service rifle and placing fifth overall in addition to taking the Service Rifle Championship, Singley left many at the range in awe. To top it all off, the competition’s final day was Singley’s birthday as well as 20th anniversary of service in the United States Army.

Norman Houle wins 2009 NRA High Power Rifle Championship

FORT BENNING, Ga. – -(AmmoLand.com)- Sgt. Maj. Martin Barreras assumed responsibility of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit from Sgt. Maj. Thomas Fuller at a ceremony Aug. 28 at Pool Indoor Shooting Complex.

Barreras becomes the 23rd senior enlisted advisor at the “Home of Champions.” He arrives from the 75th Ranger Regiment, where he served for more than 20 years. He served with distinction in all three Ranger battalions as well as the regimental headquarters.

“Sgt. Maj. Barreras arrives to the USAMU with a tremendous reputation-one of inspiring leadership, extreme competence, and extraordinary professionalism,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Hodne, commander, USAMU.

“I eagerly anticipate continuing the forward momentum and building upon the tremendous achievements and initiatives of this unit with the benefit of the counsel and leadership of Sgt. Maj. Barreras.”

Fuller is retiring after 21 years in the Army. Under Fuller’s mentor-ship the USAMU had some of its most successful years, which included seeing two of his Soldiers capture Olympic Gold medals in 2008 as well as numerous international, national and inter-service championships.

“In this year, the ‘Year of the NCO,’ it is entirely fitting that we honor such an outstanding NCO for his years of service in the defense of our nation,” Hodne said. “I feel extremely fortunate that I had the opportunity to serve alongside a non-commissioned officer of such caliber.”

Fuller put an emphasis on training that contributed to measured progress on the USAMU’s marksmanship training programs, Hodne remarked. He also developed a concept to field a paralympic shooting team at the USAMU for wounded warriors, as well as institute an installation-wide program for all Command Sergeants Major that provides a venue to share marksmanship training techniques for dissemination throughout the Army.

“The last two years (at the USAMU) has been an indescribable honor,” Fuller said. “True human greatness is achieved when you are part of something bigger than yourself.”

USAMU Welcomes New Senior Enlisted Advisor

Smyrna, GA --(AmmoLand.com)- Team GLOCK won three titles at the USPSA Area 8 championship August 27-30 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The tournament featured eleven courses of fire requiring a minimum of 257 rounds. Nearly 300 competitors participated in the annual event.

In the Production division, Team GLOCK used GLOCK 34 pistols chambered in 9×19. Captain Dave Sevigny won nine of the eleven courses of fire for another decisive high overall finish by scoring 1248 match points. 2009 marks the 6th time Sevigny has won the Area 8 championship.

“They always put on a good tournament and our team was happy to be there. I feel ready for the Nationals and Jessie and Randi are shooting better than ever. They will be tough,” Sevigny said.

Four women entered the 64 competitor Production field at Area 8. Randi Rogers won the High Lady category with a 14th place overall finish while scoring 890 match points. “Lorton” was her favorite stage from the match. It was a 30 round 150 point stage with 15 IPSC Targets. The design was a hallway with ports cut in each side where the shooter had to travel down the hallway finding and shooting the targets as they became visible. This was a great stage for a Production shooter because it offered a great layout to plan your reloads and make the most of moving and reloading. Overall she was 15th on the stage with 75% of the stage winner’s score.

“Area 8 was a great experience for me as I train to compete at the USPSA Nationals this year. I learned several things at this match and I plan to continue perfecting my skills as I head to Las Vegas, NV for nationals in two weeks,” said Rogers.

Another notable finish with a GLOCK 34 in the Production division came from Area 8 resident Tori Nonaka of Virginia. The 14 yearold junior competitor was High “C-class” and Junior, 2nd place Lady and 21st place overall with 829 match points.

In the 94 competitor Limited division field, seven women shot for the title. Still hot off her Steel Challenge world titles, Jessie Abbate won the High Lady category with a 6th place overall and 2nd place in the Master class. Jessie won all eleven stages in the ladies category and was in the Top 10 overall in six of the eleven stages. Jessie’s 997 match points at 80.55% is one of the best high lady finishes considering several Master and Grandmasters were entered.

“Team GLOCK made a clean sweep across the board and I’m proud of my teammates. We have all trained hard and this is a great start in preparing for the USPSA Nationals,” said Abbate. “The stages were quite deceiving, appearing to be wide open targets, but yet they presented awkward angles, and shooting positions, with targets moved back to further distances. The match turned out to be more of a challenge than I expected, but was definitely prepared and welcomed the challenge!” Jessie used her GLOCK 24 in .40 for her most recent accomplishment.

Team GLOCK will next compete at the USPSA Back to Back Nationals in Las Vegas, Nevada September 12-19. Sevigny and Rogers will then head to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the IDPA Nationals September 24. Following the IDPA Nationals, the team will appear at the GSSF GLOCK Annual Shoot XVI in Conyers, Georgia September 26-27.

Fairfax, VA --(AmmoLand.com)- The National Rifle Association’s Training Department is pleased to announce the launch of a new website, NRAInstructors.org. With this new site, NRA Certified Instructors can promote firearms training opportunities, allow online student registration, and streamline the process of reporting courses.

This secure web-based environment allows NRA Certified Instructors to advertise their courses, register and manage students, and market future courses to prior and prospective students, all at no charge. Trainers can now view and submit all course reports online via NRAInstructors.org, and even purchase training materials through the site.

“We are very excited about NRAInstructors.org. This site will help bring our training programs into the 21st century. Over 1,000 trainers have already registered on the site and started promoting their courses, with an equal number of individuals using the online registration to sign up for courses in their area,” said Charles Mitchell, Manager of NRA’s Training Department.

NRAInstructors.org also serves as an avenue for people to search for training opportunities in their area, using the online course listings to choose the appropriate NRA Certified Instructor and training course to fit their needs. News and useful links to training and educational information and materials can also be found on the site, including previous issues of The Shooting Education Update.

Not only does NRAInstructors.org provide trainers with tools and resources to manage their courses, but it also allows the Training Department to create awards based on instructor activity and track information by discipline for future firearms training program development.
