In 2011 Heckler & Koch launch a shooting team to get involved and support shooting sports. The move marked HK’s first entry into the competitive shooting sports organized by the USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) and related sport shooting groups.

“We had an exciting year as this was our first major involvement in competitive shooting in the USA at this level,” said Mark Osborne, HK’s Director of Sales. “HK Germany has a European-based team but this is an opportunity for HK-USA and our American team to showcase what they can do.”

SHACKLESFORD, VA --(Ammoland.com)- Laura Torres-Reyes of Team International Training, Inc. (G4S ITI) won High Lady in the annual IDPA Postal Match, held globally from August through December 2011.

This year’s event, open to any classified IDPA shooter, drew in 2,338 participants. A Postal Match is defined as a match where all participants receive the exact same four stages with very specific set-ups.

The clubs then mail in their results. Torres-Reyes placed first out of 112 lady competitors.

“Mr. Ted Murphy did a fantastic job of designing stages that were fun and straightforward. With only four stages, there was very little room for error. You had to bring your best game balancing speed with pinpoint accuracy,” commented Torres-Reyes. “I was pleasantly surprised with the final results where I placed first [High Lady] out of 112 lady competitors. I shot the match in late December, so it was rewarding to confirm that my dry fire practicing during this winter season has improved my skills. I am excited to be heading into the 2012 season with a bang!”

Torres-Reyes can be seen competing in her next match at the IDPA Triple Crown I, held at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, FL February 4th through 5th, 2012.

• Team ITI welcomed its first two female teammates to its ranks: Cindi Thomas, a Navy Veteran and current Financial Analyst for the Navy, and Laura Torres-Reyes, an Active Duty Air Force Colonel (0-6) and Physician.
• Team ITI member Morgan Allen, who suffered a wrist fracture in May, underwent surgery to repair the damage and came back in August at the top of his game.
• Allen was also chosen to compete as part of Team USA at the Inaugural IDPA World Championship, held September 21st through September 24th at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, FL. He was chosen to represent the US in the Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP) Division.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- The journey toward the London 2012 Olympic Games continues as aspiring Olympians take the stage in the first part of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Airgun in Anniston, Ala.

The event takes place from Dec. 2-4 at the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) South Marksmanship Center.

Robert Mitchell, Executive Director of USA Shooting praised the CMP South facility and expressed USAS’ excitement for hosting as he said, “The CMP venue is the best airgun range in the country with 80 electronic targets that provides our athletes with an ideal shooting environment.”

At the completion of the 2010 and 2011 World Cup seasons, the USA Shooting Team won two Women’s 10m Air Rifle quotas, two Men’s 10m Air Rifle quotas and two Men’s 10m Air Pistol quotas. These valuable quotas determine the number of athletes that will represent the USA in the 2012 Olympic Games. The scores from the first part will be combined with those of the second part, which will be held the CMP’s North Marksmanship Center in Camp Perry, Ohio from Feb. 22-25. Olympic Team selection will be based on the aggregate of four courses of fire and two best finals.

In Men’s 10m Air Rifle, top-ranked athletes Corporal Matt Rawlings (Wharton, Texas) of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) and Jonathan Hall (Carrollton, Ga.) are expected to deliver strong performances. Rawlings was the recent gold medalist at the 2011 Pan American Games, winner of the first quota at the 2010 Championship of the Americans and the reigning National Champion. Hall is hot on his heels as he secured the second quota at the 2011 Pan American Games with a silver medal and the bronze medal at the 2011 National Championships. Two-time Olympian Matt Emmons (Browns Mill, N.J.) is looking for his second berth on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team. Emmons received an Olympic nomination (pending approval by the USOC) for his success in Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position and looks to demonstrate his airgun talents as well.

Women’s 10m Air Rifle will be an interesting event as no clear champions have emerged in the past two seasons of competition. Meghann K. Morrill (Boerne, Texas) made the final in last year’s World Championships and is the reigning National Champion, but didn’t medal in a World Cup this year. The only Women’s 10m Air Rifle World Cup medalist in 2011 was Sarah Scherer (Woburn, Mass.) with a gold medal (and quota) winning performance in Changwon. Scherer’s collegiate teammate Sarah Beard (Danville, Ind.) is also on the radar as she delivered an exceptional performance for the silver medal at the 2011 National Championship. Two-time Olympian Emily Caruso (Fairfield, Conn.) is also a strong contender. Coming off a recent gold medal (and quota) performance at the Pan American Games, Caruso’s shooting is peaking at the right time in the season. Another name that’s liable to show up in the finals is Jamie Gray (Lebanon, Pa.). Gray, formerly Jamie Beyerle, like Emmons has already received an Olympic nomination (pending approval by the USOC) in Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position, but is looking to assert herself in airgun competition. With two spots available for the female competitors and the top talent on the line, it is likely that the athletes who reach the podium will be separated by just tenths of a point.

Sergeant First Class Daryl Szarenski (Seale, Ala.) of the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) is ready and waiting for Men’s 10m Air Pistol. Szarenski has had a stellar two years leading up to the Olympic Games. In the 2010 and 2011 season, he’s won six international medals in pistol events (including Men’s 50m Free Pistol). Szarenski is also the Pan American Games gold medalist-winning the second Men’s 10m Air Pistol quota for the American team in Guadalajara, Mexico. Brian Beaman is also on the radar as he (Selby, S.D.) won the bronze medal at the 2011 World Cup USA and first Men’s 10m Air Pistol quota. Not to be overlooked is young Will Brown (Twins Falls, Ida.), a Resident Athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. Brown has dominated junior competitions for the past few years and has been making the leap into the men’s division. He recently finished fifth at the 2011 Pan American Games. Though he may be considered more of a wild card, 2008 Olympian Sergeant First Class Keith Sanderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.), also of the U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program, made his debut in air pistol at the 2010 Winter Airgun Championships and his scores have been rapidly improving.

Lodi, Wisconsin --(Ammoland.com)- Team Sinclair won the National F-TR Team Championship while Sinclair Team member Jeff Rorer won the F-TR Individual National Championship at the recent 2011 F-Class National Championship, held at the Winnequah Gun Club in Lodi, Wisconsin.

On top of that performance two team members set new individual national records.

This is the fourth National Team Championship that Team Sinclair has won in the past five years. During the individual matches, team member Jeff Rorer won the 2011 F-TR National Championship and set a new aggregate National Record while Brad Sauve set a new, national record with a score of 150 – 11X in the F-TR division, 600 yard match. Both national records are pending until NRA verification.

F-TR Division rifles must fire .223 Remington or .308 Winchester cartridges. A bipod and rear sandbag are permitted and the total weight of the rifle, with bi-pod can not exceed 18.5 pounds.

Team ITI At North Carolina USPSA Sectional Championship

Team Captain Brandon Wright won High Overall Production, Gary Byerly won Limited 10 High Overall and Cindi Thomas won High Lady in Production.

Brandon Wright won High Overall Production with 1035.3252 match points, or 100.00%.

“This was the first time I have been to Sir Walter Gun Range in North Carolina. The stages were really fun and challenging. Lots of movement, targets, steel and no-shoots kept you guessing on how to approach each stage,” remarked Wright.

“I would like to take this chance to thank the companies who help me throughout the year: G4S International Training Inc. (ITI), Laura Burgess Marketing, Atlanta Arms and Ammo, Smith & Wesson, G2 Gemini and Rudy Project. Congratulations to all my teammates who have put in the practice and dedication to the shooting sports and have come out winners!”

Gary Byerly won Limited 10 High Overall with 1099.6576 match points, or 100.00%.

“Over 200 competitors descended on the Sir Walter Gun Club for the 2011 NC USPSA Sectional Match. Nine stages totaling over 200 rounds meant everyone got their money’s worth. The stages offered a vast array of options,” commented Byerly. “Shooting with several top finishers led to lengthy debates about strategy and multiple stage breakdowns. Conferring with teammates Brandon Wright and Cindi Thomas was invaluable to my success. A high number of occluded targets placed accuracy at a premium. Congratulations to teammates Brandon Wright and Cindi Thomas on their respective wins. It’s been a great year for our team!”

The road to the High Lady in Production title was a tough one with the top four ladies only separated by 4%, but ITI’s Thomas came out on top.

“It was a fun match with a little bit of everything and plenty of options! The great part for me was to see how tight it was with the top four ladies,” Thomas said. “Karyn Byerly, Karla Herdzik and Cindy Austin and I were only separated by a total of 4%; it’s great to have that much competition at a match!”

SHACKLESFORD, VA --(Ammoland.com)- Morgan Allen of Team International Training, Inc. (ITI) has been chosen to compete for Team USA at the inaugural IDPA World Championship, to be held September 21st through September 24th, 2011 at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, FL.

Allen was chosen to represent the US in the Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP) Division.

IDPA Headquarters asked their US members to choose who they wanted to represent the United States in the inaugural IDPA World Championship.

The people that garnered the most votes in each division were contacted and all expressed their honor at being elected to be the representatives of Team USA at this inaugural world event. Other team members include: David Olhasso (Custom Defensive Pistol), Robert Vogel (Stock Service Pistol), Craig Buckland (Stock Service Revolver) and Jerry Miculek (Enhanced Service Revolver).

As with all of the teams, each of these members will be competing not only for their country, but also for individual standing at this match.

This has been a whirlwind year for Allen, who suffered a broken wrist in the beginning of the season and was forced to take time off to undergo surgery and recovery. His absence from the competition did not seem to impact Allen too much as he has already placed 2nd in ESP Division at two matches since his return. Since 2007, Allen has won 30 IDPA State and Regional Division Championship titles, as well as five top five Division finishes at IDPA National Championship matches. His selection for Team USA is the capstone and ultimate compliment for Allen’s 2011 competitive season.

Des Moines, Iowa – -(Ammoland.com)- Five staffers representing sponsors Brownells, Sinclair and Brownells LE Division finished in the top 50 of the Amateur division at the recent Pro Am 3-Gun held at the Rockcastle Shooting Center in Park City, KY.

Corey Schwanz (1st), Duane Liptak (10th), Matt Buckingham (33rd), Tony Barnes (41st), Monty Crain (48th) turned in the best scores.

Company President Pete Brownell also competed and said, “I definitely need some more trigger time! I don’t get out as much as I’d like to and the Pro Am format was perfect. What a great, well-run match!”

The three-day, Pro Am event was held at the Rockcastle Shooting Center, Park City, Kentucky. The Amateur Division required competitors to compete at seven different stages using handguns, rifles and shotguns from a variety of shooting positions. Members of the Brownells/Sinclair/LE team used a Glock and 1911 handguns and while most of the rifles were based on the AR platform, Liptak shot an AK-47. Shotguns included Benelli, Remington and FN brands.

Winner Schwanz said, “I’m definitely looking forward to coming back to Rockcastle; how often does the average guy get to shoot a rifle out of a car or kick down a door while shooting?”

Rockcastle Shooting Center is the newest addition to the Park Mammoth Resort property, which is developing into the nation’s premiere shooting sports resort. ACCOKEEK, MD --(Ammoland.com)- From a field of more than 300 competitors, Team Benelli shooters Kurt Miller and Rob Romero distinguished themselves at the 2011 Rocky Mountain 3-Gun Championship held at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico last weekend.

Miller and Romero both took first place in their respective divisions – Miller taking first in Tactical-Irons and Romero placing first in Heavy-Metal Irons.

Overcoming the thin air of mile-high altitudes and grueling terrain, Kurt Miller dominated his entire match with his Benelli M2 scoring a perfect 100 points on 4 of the 9 stages.

Miller took 1st place in the Tactical-Irons division with a total score of 807.13. Rob Romero was the lead competitor shooting his SuperNova in the Heavy-Metal Division taking home 1st place with a score of 774.52.

Team Benelli shooters, Katie Harris (469.08) took 2nd overall in the Junior Division and 3rd overall in the Lady’s Division of Tactical-Optics, Tony Holmes (775.01) took 3rd overall in the Open Division, Julie Golob (419.12) took 4th place in the Lady’s Division of Tactical-Optics. Ben Fortin (650.32) came in 15th place in Tactical-Optics, Patrick Kelly (507.22) came in 15th place in the Heavy-Metal Scope Division and Jansen Jones (497.87) came in 18th place in the Heavy-Metal Scope Division.

“This was a very physical match with lots of running and challenging terrain,” said Team Benelli’s Bryce Towsley. “This match was nearly as challenging as the Ironman with lots of off-hand long range rifle and shotgun slug shooting.”

In the Pursuit, Tracy battled her way back up the ranks to finish 2nd, while Lanny stayed in 3rd place for the second race and the last day of nationals brought a 3rd place finish for Tracy and a 4 th place finish for Lanny.

Tracy and Lanny are also training hard to make sure they are ready to bring home the gold in the 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

“We brought our shooting to a whole new level this year. I think a lot of it has to do with being confident and being able to rely on our equipment because of Otis. It gets us excited about the possibility of winning a medal at the Olympics in Russia,” says Lanny Barnes. Tracy adds, “Otis has been instrumental in our shooting success at the international level. Winchester Athlete of the Month - Rachael Heiden

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- Rachael Heiden (Clinton, Mich.) may still be a junior category shooter, but that certainly isn’t reflected in her scores.

Heiden competes at a world-class level and hasn’t let her age stop her from winning two international medals in the last two months.

At the 2011 International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Beijing, Heiden fired 73 out of 75 match targets to tie the junior world record.

Despite windy conditions, she shot 16 targets in the final to finish with 89 targets for the silver medal. Yet, her most recent and lustrous accomplishment came in the beginning of July at the 2011 ISSF World Cup in Gaj Maribor, Slovenia. With 72 out of 75 match targets, she maintained a cool head to shoot 23 targets in the final for the gold medal victory.

National Shotgun Coach Bret Erickson commented on her success of late as he said, “Rachael had a fantastic showing in Slovenia to win the gold. Despite shooting in poor light, she put up a superb final. She is a hard-working athlete and has made herself as a front runner for the 2012 Olympic Team.”

Heiden, an Olympic Training Center Resident Athlete and University of Colorado at Colorado Springs senior, is no stranger to hard work. Heiden, who graduated high school at a young age due to advanced homeschooling, is only 20 years old, yet a senior in college.

When asked about her Winchester Athlete of the Month nod, Heiden said, “I am honored. I can’t thank everyone enough for helping me to get to this point. There are still things I need to work on, but I’m looking forward to the remaining competitions this year!”

Nearly 100 competitors and 14 teams competed in the Freedom Group Classic matches held at the Reade Rifle Range near Allemans, Pennsylvania on June 10-12, 2011.

Team Remington/Bushmaster scored an impressive 1956-67X. Team members included Nate Guernsey, Dan Duitsman, Phillip McCotter, Tyler Rico and Ken Roxburgh, who served as Team Captain and Team Coach. Rico earned the High Individual Team Score Award for the event with a score of 498-27X.

Other notable Team Remington/Bushmaster achievements include the third- and fifth-place finishes of Nate Guernsey and Tyler Rico (respectively) in the 800 Aggregate, High Power XTC Individual competitions.

The Freedom Group Classic is a National Rifle Association (NRA) sanctioned High-Power Championship that includes Long Range, 1,000-yard individual and four-man team competition along with High-Power XTC individual and team competitions.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--(Ammoland.com)- July 27 marks the one-year countdown to the opening of the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London, England.

Coming off of its success in Beijing, the USA Shooting Team has continued momentum through successful World Cup seasons and Olympic qualification, creating high expectations and much anticipation for London.

Five members of the USA Shooting Team have already been nominated to Team USA.

In shotgun, Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) was the first American athlete nominated and will be competing in Women’s Skeet. Heading to London with four Olympic medals, Rhode is once again considered a medal contender. With a podium finish in London, Rhode will become the first American Olympian in an individual sport to win five medals in five consecutive Olympic Games. Staff Sergeant Josh Richmond (Hillsgrove, Pa.) of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit will be shooting in Men’s Double Trap next July, following deployment to Afghanistan this fall to serve his country.

In rifle, two-time Olympic medalist Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.) will be competing in his third Olympic Games in Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position. Sergeant First Class Eric Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Ala.) will represent the U.S. in his second Olympic Games in Men’s 50m Rifle Prone. Finally, in Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position, Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.) will compete in her second Olympic Games.

To date the USA Shooting Team has secured 16 of 28 potential country participation quotas for London and will compete for additional quotas in the upcoming World Clay Target Championships and Pan American Games later this year.

Richmond has dominated the international scene since clinching the World Championship title in 2010. Following the 2008 Olympic Games, USA Shooting adopted a point selection procedure for athletes to gain an Olympic nomination. Points are awarded based on competition performance at International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cups and World Championships.

It should also be noted that Staff Sgt. Richmond is a full-time Solider and member of the USAMU stationed in Fort Benning, Ga. Moreover, prior to shooting for his Olympic dreams, this fall Staff Sgt. Richmond will deploy to serve in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Starting off his quest for London 2012, Staff Sgt. Richmond took charge at the first ISSF World Cup of the season in the sun and sand of Acapulco in 2010. He shot 144 out of 150 match targets and 48 targets in the final for a total of 192 targets and the gold medal. Shortly thereafter, he finished fourth at the ISSF World Cup in Dorset, England, with 143 match targets and 45 targets in the final.

Richmond started off the ISSF World Shooting Championships in Munich, Germany, by dropping only four targets throughout the entire match to enter the final with 146 targets. With a singular focus, he surged ahead to equal the final world record score of a perfect 50 out of 50 targets to finish with 196 targets and the title of World Champion. As a result of these performances, he earned the title of USA Shooting’s 2010 Male Athlete of the Year.

In 2011, a bronze medal got the season off to a solid start as Staff Sgt. Richmond shot 143 match targets and 46 targets in the final for a total of 189 targets in Chile. He continued to find the podium in Sydney with 140 match targets and 46 targets in the final for a total of 186 targets and the silver medal, Australia. In his third ISSF World Cup appearance of the year, Staff Sgt. Richmond shot 145 match targets and 47 out of 50 targets in the final for a total of 192 targets and fourth place in Slovenia.

National Shotgun Coach Bret Erickson said, “Josh is the top ranked Men’s Double Trap shooter in the world because he consistently delivers medal-winning performances. Richmond is the second Soldier from the USAMU to be nominated for selection to the Olympics. SFC Eric Uptagrafft was nominated in June to compete in Men’s Prone Rifle. United States Army Marksmanship Unit

FORT BENNING, Ga. --(Ammoland.com)- Several members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit showcased the very best of Soldier skills recently as they competed and won at national shooting championships across the country.

Members of the Shotgun platoon started things off by meeting their lofty expectations at the USA Shooting National Shotgun Championship June 26-July 2 in Colorado Springs. Sgt. Jeff Holguin withstood the intense competition amongst his USAMU brethren to claim the gold medal in Men’s Double Trap. He beat out Staff Sgt. Josh Richmond, ranked number one in the world, and Sgt. Glenn Eller, a 2008 Olympic Champion, to win the gold.

“It was awesome to win my second national championship,” Holguin said. “It also qualifies me for the Pan American Games later this year in Mexico.”

Sgt. Vincent Hancock once again defended his title in Men’s Skeet, earning a gold medal for the third consecutive year. The 2008 Olympic Champion led after the first round and never looked back.

At the USAS National Rifle and Pistol Championships held here July 1-8, Soldiers dominated the field of competitors. Sgt. 1st Class Jason Parker led the way, earning two gold medals after winning both the Men’s Prone Rifle and Men’s Three Position Rifle matches. He also was a member of three first-place winning teams.

In Men’s Air Rifle, Cpl. Matthew Rawlings came away with the gold medal, also ensuring that he will represent the U.S. at the Pan Am Games along with Parker.

USAMU Soldiers swept the podium in the Men’s center fire and standard pistol matches. Spc. Greg Markowski won gold in center fire and was followed by teammates Sgt. 1st Class Thomas Rose and Sgt. Brad Balsley. Spc. Sean Ragay took gold in standard, outscoring Balsey and Rose, who finished second the third, respectively.

“The Army uniform and the USAMU black hat remain a ‘Symbol of Strength’ at an American tradition, the National Matches,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Hodne, commander, USAMU. “When the USAMU is on the firing line, our unit’s and our Army’s expectations are that they will showcase the very best of Army Soldier skills. Winning is not our mission; it is expected.”

At Camp Perry, Ohio, members of both the USAMU’s Service Pistol and International Pistol platoons won a number of matches and swept the coveted team championships July 11-18 at the National Pistol Championships.

U.S. Army Blue won the “Coming Through the Rye” Trophy as the overall four-man team champions after three days of strong competition.

Competing in center fire, .22- and.45-caliber pistol matches the team of service pistol shooters Sgts. 1st Class James Henderson and Gregory Wilson, and Staff Sgts. Lyman Grover and Patrick Franks beat out the second place team by one target to claim their second straight title and third for the Army since the inception of the trophy. Henderson, a two-time National Champion, placed second in the overall individual category.

On July 18, U.S. Army Blue won the prestigious Gold Cup Trophy for the fourth consecutive year. The trophy, in existence since 1920, is given to the winners of the National Trophy Team Match. Firing members were once again Henderson, Wilson, Grover and Franks.

In the National Trophy Individual Match, Rose, a member of the International Pistol platoon, went back to his roots and came out on top after finishing with the high score.

“Shooting International Pistol the last six years has honed my skills to shoot slow-fire better, and with my experience as a service pistol shooter initially, the two combined to work perfectly,” Rose said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better result.”

The National Championships culminate the competition schedule for the Service Pistol platoon, who now turns its attention to its main mission of conducting marksmanship training courses provided for Soldiers throughout the Army.

The Service Rifle platoon now takes center stage as they will represent the Army at the 50th Interservice Rifle Championship, National High-Power Rifle Championship and National Trophy Rifle Matches.

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- SIG SAUER Team Captain Max Michel, Jr., once again showed his mastery of speed and steel with his second-place finish at the fourth-annual Pro-Am Championship over the weekend.

Held in Frostproof, Fla., the Pro-Am Championship has become one of the more popular matches among competitors and spectators alike. Similar to a drag race, the scoring of the all-steel match is simple: Who ever knocks down the most targets within the par time wins.

“It’s just a fun match to shoot,” Michel said. “Being a top shooter himself, Phil Strader (match director) knows how to keep the atmosphere light but still be competitive.”

With a score of 240 targets down, Michel was a mere seven plates from the top spot. Michel won five of the eight stages.

He also placed in the top ten in Men’s 50m Rifle Thee Position in 2004 and 2008. Emmons is working toward a bright future as he solidified a nomination for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team following stellar performances in 2010 and 2011. Following the 2008 Olympic Games, USA Shooting adopted a point selection procedure for athletes to gain an Olympic nomination. Points are awarded based on competition performance at International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cups and World Championships.

Two-time Olympic medalist Matt Emmons is gearing up for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England.

Emmons started off 2010 with an unprecedented three International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position gold medals. He began the season in Sydney, Australia with 1170 match points and 102.6 points in the final for a total of 1272.6 points. Emmons continued to dominate with a gold medal victory at the ISSF World Cup USA. He fired 1178 points and 98.6 points in the final for a total of 1276.6 points. He shot 598 match points and 104.1 points in the final for a total of 702.1 points. In the end of June, he upped his medal total with his third gold medal of the season at the ISSF World Cup in Belgrade, Serbia. Emmons led the pack with 1181 match points. He followed up his five point lead with 97.4 points in the final for 1278.4 total points.

Matt opted out of the ISSF World Cup Final in October of last year due to recovery from surgery. In September of 2010, he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, and as a result had his thyroid removed. After only an eight-week recovery, he finished second at the USAS Winter Airgun Championships and thereby earned a place at two 2011 ISSF World Cups in Men’s 10m Air Rifle. He continued to shine in February on the domestic scene, setting a new national of 1188 points in Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position qualification at the Rocky Mountain Rifle Championship. Moreover, Emmons finished the three-position match with a 19.6 point margin over the silver medalist. His final score was 1188 points in day one, 1179 points in day two and 101.6 points in the final for a total of 2468.6 points.

Back in Sydney, Australia for the first ISSF World Cup of the 2011 season, Emmons brought home a silver medal in Men’s 50m Rifle Three Position. At 1169 qualification points, Emmons was situated in the middle of the final. Facing a deficit of seven points after China’s Qinan Zhu shot a commanding 1176 qualification points, Emmons fired 101 points in the final to outlast the rest of the field and finish with the silver medal. Shortly after, he shot the highest final of the ISSF World Cup USA with 101.2 points. Emmons finished qualification with 1172 points and scored 50.7 points in a shoot-off to earn the seventh position in the final. He shot his way up to fifth place and finished with 1273.2 total points to add to his U.S. Olympic point selection total.

National Rifle Coach Major Dave Johnson said, “Matt continues to overcome personal challenges and push the limits of the sport. In Australia he won a silver medal against many odds and earned a U.S. Olympic Team nomination. I expect him to contend for Men’s 10m Air Rifle and Men’s 50m Rifle Prone and I know he’s passionate about reaching the Olympic podium again.”

FORT BENNING, Ga. --(Ammoland.com)- The Fort Benning community said goodbye to one of its own Thursday.

In a ceremony at the Main Post chapel, Soldiers, Family members and civilians gathered to pay their final respects to Sgt. 1st Class Jason Sargent, who lost his courageous battle against a terminal illness June 25.

Sargent, 39, was a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit for more than five years. He was a decorated member of the Service Pistol platoon as a member of several championship teams and earned several accolades including the Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge and the President’s Hundred tab. He also was the lead instructor in numerous close quarters marksmanship training courses, which raised the combat readiness of thousands of Soldiers.

In 2010 he was named the noncommissioned officer-in-charge of the unit’s International Pistol platoon, tasked with preparing Soldiers in their pursuit of the 2012 Olympic Games while they simultaneously train Soldiers and showcase the Army.

“What I admired most about Jason was his caring leadership and his utmost consideration for others,” said Lt. Col. Daniel Hodne, commander, USAMU. “I personally selected him to lead. He had the ability to draw the best out of people who already thought they were the best.”

Born in Bar Harbor, Maine, Sargent enlisted in the Army in 1993 after graduating from Ellsworth High School of Ellsworth, Maine, in 1990 and studying professional aeronautics at Embry Riddle University. His initial assignment was at Fort Rucker as an aerial observer with the 229th Attack Helicopter Regiment. He also served in Korea with the 2nd Infantry Division and at Fort Carson with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment before his first assignment with the USAMU. He served in the Army Reserves before returning to active duty and the USAMU in 2008.

In 2003, Sargent volunteered to serve a combat tour in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as the Combined Joint Task Force-180 CJ3 Aviation NCOIC.

Sargent, who loved to fly planes and was an avid golfer, leaves behind his wife Cindi and three sons: Nicholas, 15; Andrew, 13; and William, 5.

“Sgt. 1st Class Sargent was a true and loyal friend, and he loved his family more than anything,” said Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Wilson. “He would go out of his way to help you if you needed it. “He was a true ‘Mainer’-his goal was to retire back to Maine with his family.”

During his military career Sargent earned the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Citation, Army Commendation Medal, four Army Achievement Medals, three Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Ribbon, Overseas Deployment Ribbon, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Air Assault Badge, Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge and President’s Hundred Tab.

“Although his time on this Earth was cut short, his impact on each of us will last the rest of our lives,” Hodne concluded. “Let us live by Jason’s example, let us make each day count, and let us live with a sense of the profound impact we can all have on each other.”

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- USA Shooting is pleased to announce that 2008 Olympian Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.) has qualified for a nomination to the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team pending approval by the United States Olympic Committee.

Upon approval, Beyerle will be competing in her second consecutive Olympic Games in Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Beyerle finished fourth in Women’s 10m Air Rifle and fifth in Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position.

After strong performances in 2010 and 2011, Beyerle has solidified her reputation as a front runner for Olympic gold and is currently the top ranked Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position shooter in the world. Following the 2008 Olympic Games, USA Shooting adopted a point selection procedure for athletes to gain an Olympic nomination. Points are awarded based on competition performance at International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cups and World Championships.

Beyerle began her quest for London 2012 in 2010 at the second International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Sydney, Australia, with a silver medal in Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position. Beyerle shot 579 match points and followed it up with a strong final of 101.2 points for a total of 680.2 points. Shortly thereafter, Beyerle climbed the podium in Fort Benning, Ga., at the ISSF World Cup USA. With 591 match points and 96.7 points in the final, Beyerle set a new national record for a high match score and tied her previous record of 687.7 match and final points. She picked up a few more points at the ISSF World Cup Belgrade with 582 match points and 95.9 points in the final for a seventh place finish.

At the 2010 World Shooting Championships, Beyerle became the third American athlete to win an Olympic quota for Team USA in London 2012. Seeded low in the final with a qualification score of 582 points, she gained a leg up on a competition with a 10.7 point tenth shot to move from seventh to fifth place to grab one of five quotas awarded. Though it didn’t count toward her U.S. Olympic point selection total, Beyerle delivered a rock solid performance of 590 qualification points and 100.7 points in the final to win the gold medal and the Champions trophy at the ISSF World Cup Final in Munich, Germany.

Beyerle’s name appeared in every Women’s 50m Rifle Three Position ISSF World Cup final she shot in 2011. Again, starting off this year in Sydney, Beyerle commanded the competition with 589 match points and 96.3 points in the final for a total of 685.3 points. She surged ahead in the U.S. Olympic selection points with another gold medal at her home range in Fort Benning, Ga., at the 2011 ISSF World Cup USA. Situated in the middle of the final with 585 match points, Beyerle reminded her competitors and the crowd that it’s not over until the last shot. With perfect execution, she fired a deep 10.8 point tenth shot for a gold medal victory by just one-tenth of a point to finish with 683.2 total points. In June, she finished fourth at the ISSF World Cup Munich with 585 qualification points and 97.2 points in the final for 682.2 points.

National Rifle Coach Major Dave Johnson said, “Jamie has continued her march to the top of our sport. In the last 12 months, Jamie has earned three gold medals in World Cups and placed in the top five in two more starts. Her performance has earned her a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team as one of the best in the world. Congrats to her–her determination, discipline, and smart hard work is continuing to pay off.”

SHACKLESFORD, VA --(Ammoland.com)- Gary Byerly of Team International Training, Inc. (ITI) competed in this past weekend’s Virginia State IDPA at Kettlefoot, held at the Kettlefoot Rod and Gun Club in Bristol, TN June 25, 2011.

Byerly took home several titles, including CDP Division Champion and High Overall for the match.

Luck was on Byerly’s side as he even won a gun in the drawing. This win brings Team ITI’s Division Championship total up to 10 for the 2011 competitive season.

“This is the second straight year the Virginia State IDPA Championship has been hosted by the Kettlefoot Rod and Gun Club,” commented Byerly.

“This match continues to improve and drew competitors from across the US. With 13 stages it was important to maintain consistency throughout the day. The training base I’ve established allowed me to do that and concentrate on executing my plan. Thanks to the very professional staff for a well ran match!”

Byerly will next be competing at the IDPA Mountaineer Classic held in Boone, NC August 20, 2011.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. --(Ammoland.com)- Angus Hobdell, the Team CZ shooter from Tempe, Ariz., won the Production division title this past weekend at the 2011 USPSA Area 1 Regional Handgun Championship, Presented by Springfield Armory.

Hobdell, who started the match in third place, behind the early leader Cody McKenna of Mesa, Ariz., moved into the lead with the first of his five stage wins on the fourth stage of the match.

After moving to first place Hobdell never looked back and finished the match with a division winning score of 1159.9220 points.

“Angus has long been among the top Production division shooters in USPSA so it is no surprise to see him claim the division title at this year’s Area 1 Regional Handgun Championship,” said Chuck Anderson, the USPSA Area 1 director.

McKenna, who held the lead through the first two stages, fell to third before moving up on stage six into second place where he finished the match with two stage wins and a final score of 1114.7971 points.

Rounding out the top five were Brad Engmann of San Francisco, Calif. who won one stage and finished with 1050.9002 to take third, defending champion Mike Hughes of Maple Falls, Wash. in fourth with one stage win and 1040.2744 points, and Doug Newquist of Albany, Ore. in fifth with a final score of 1030.4580.

Elsewhere in the Production division, Sara Dunivin of Phoenix, Ariz., the 2011 USPSA Women’s Single Stack National Champion, finished the match in 12th place overall with a final score of 934.0416 points to claim the Women’s Production division title. Trystan Burkhardt of Boise, Idaho finished as the top junior with 693.0680. Among the seniors, Bill Garland, Sr. of Prineville, Ore. won the Senior title with 785.3332 points, while Ben Smith of Philipsburg, Mont. won the Super Senior title with 730.9980.

Benelli Three Gun

ACCOKEEK, MD --(Ammoland.com)- Team Benelli 3-gun member, Katie Harris won her fourth consecutive major match. Harris took top honors in the Lady’s and the Junior’s categories of the Scope Tactical Division at the MGM Ironman 3-gun Competition, held last week at the Parma Rod and Gun Club in Parma, Idaho.

Also enjoying impressive rankings at the intense 1000-plus-round match were Team Benelli 3-gun shooters, Ben Fortin who took 2nd in the Trooper Division and 8th overall in Scoped Tactical and Jeremy Parker who took 10th overall in Scoped Tactical.

The MGM Ironman is a grueling three-day marathon, which makes it a “one of a kind” 3-gun match. In 1999, Mike Gibson developed an idea for the type of match that he wanted to shoot.

In the twelve years the Ironman has been held, it has continually grown and is rapidly becoming one of the top matches in the nation with more than 400 shooters competing for top prizes.

Koenig, with his 13th overall win, set an all new record with a score of 1920 with 187X, only 5 X’s down from a perfect score. Leatham, with his top honors in Production Division this year, has won the overall NRA Bianchi Cup nine times, and stands out as the only competitor ever to win all three classes at the NRA Bianchi Cup tournament: Open, Metallic and Production.

“We could not be more thrilled with the outcome of this year’s tournament,” said Scott Carnahan, Vice President, Category Management for Equipment Products, and Team Safariland member/manager.

Benelli Three Gun

Holmes specializes in the Open Class of 3-gun matches. He especially enjoys shooting his Benelli M2 with an XRAIL magazine extension system attached, which permits him to employ 21 rounds in a rotating magazine configuration.

Competing in the shooting sports since 1974, Holmes has proven himself to be a top competitor in a variety of shooting disciplines, including pistol, rifle and shotgun. Coached as a youngster by his police officer father who was a serious competitor in Practical Pistol Competitions (PPC), Homes began competing in NRA High-power, Small-bore Rifle matches and later in PPC.

His first national match was a Second Chance Bowling Pin Shoot in 1983, and he’s never looked back.

Among his distinctions, Holmes is the 2003 World 3-Gun Champion and 2-time US National Combat Shotgun Champion just to name a few from a long list of competitive achievements.

“I attend many matches all around the country, and I live, breathe, eat & sleep thinking about my next match.” Holmes said. “And as such, I rely heavily on the flawless performance of my Benelli M2, which has become my primary “go-to” shotgun.”

Glock Pistols

SMYRNA, Ga. --(Ammoland.com)- Team GLOCK continued their top finishing season at they competed in the USPSA Double Tap Championships, held June 3-5, in Wichita Falls, TX and the World Class Speed on Steel 2011, held June 3-4, in Old Bridge, NJ.

Randi Rogers, who represented the team at the USPSA Double Tap, finished as Ladies Limited Division champion and 25th overall.

Tori Nonaka, who competed in the Speed on Steel, placed tenth in the Iron Sight Centerfire division and 14th in the Open Centerfire.

Rogers performance at the Double Tap Championships put her against a deep field of world champions, where she was faced with stages such as the “Sea Serpent.” This particular stage required the competitors to hit 14 paper targets for a possible 140 points. Rogers shot the stage in 20.15 seconds and scored 131 out of the 140 points.

A challenging stage, the competitor must begin at the front of a rectangular shooting area and maneuver backward to engage targets while keeping the muzzle pointed down range. In addition while moving backward the competitor must also duck below an arch built to resemble a giant sea serpent.

“For my first Double Tap competition, I was very pleased with my overall placement,” stated Rogers. “Transitioning between the very accuracy intensive Bianchi Cup to the speed focused Double Tap was a challenge, but I was very happy with the outcome of the match.” Rogers competed with a GLOCK 35, .40, built by S&J Custom.

Tori Nonaka, who competed for Team GLOCK at the World Class Steel Speed on Steel, shot in both the Iron Sight Centerfire, placing tenth overall and the Open Centerfire Divisions placing 14th overall.

“I looked forward to this match all year, and was very pleased with my performance,” stated Nonaka. “This exciting variation of the Steel Challenge will definitely help me to prepare for the world championship in August.” Nonaka competed with both a GLOCK 34, 9×19, built by S&J Custom and a GLOCK 17 Open Steel Gun built by Hatfield’s Gunsmithing.

Dave Sevigny will next compete in The Steel Challenge West Coast Regional in Piru, CA, June 17-19. The same weekend Randi Rogers and Tori Nonaka will be at the IDPA Carolina Cup in Oxford, NC.

While saying goodbye to an old friend, the team is pleased to welcome new members Cindi Thomas and Laura Torres-Reyes to the team as its first female participants.

Brandon Wright Named New Team Captain
Middaugh has chosen to step down after serving as Team Captain for the first formative year of the team’s existence. While still an active team member, Middaugh has chosen to step down at this time due to personal and professional obligations.

Middaugh reflected on his time at the helm and warmly welcomes Wright as the new Captain: “Optimism and excitement. Those are the two words that come to the forefront when I think of stepping down as Team Captain of Team ITI. I have been fortunate to be a part of this team from its genesis, but professional and personal obligations require that I step down as the Captain and welcome and assist Brandon Wright as the new Captain.”

He continues, “It is the recognition of Brandon’s talents and capabilities that cause me to be optimistic and excited about the future of Team ITI. I will still be involved and will remain a team member, so hopefully I will see many of our friends and supporters out on the range.”

Upon finding out about his new title as Team Captain, Wright commented “I am very excited to be appointed the new Team Captain of Team ITI. We have an incredible group of people to represent International Training Inc. and it’s my pleasure to assist them in any way I can. Whether it’s in training, coaching, getting them the right equipment to get the job done or being there to support them at a major match, I’m more than ready to make it happen.”

Wright continued, “Rob Middaugh has been instrumental in doing all the ground work to get Team ITI started. I hope to continue his vision for ITI and make Team ITI the best that I can.”

Team ITI Welcomes First Two Female Teammates to its Ranks

Earlier this spring, Team ITI began its search for new team members. Many individuals applied for the chance to be a part of the elite team, but only two were chosen, and they made history as the first female members of Team ITI.

On the addition of the two new teammates, Wright said “I am truly honored to announce Team ITI’s newest members Cindi Thomas and Laura Torres- Reyes. I have watched these two women in action for well over a year now and they are exactly what we are looking for to represent ITI. Both women have served or currently serve in our U.S. Armed Forces and support ITI in our efforts. At every match, they are always carrying themselves in a very professional manner and no matter how they are shooting, they have a positive attitude.”

In USPSA, she competes in Production “B”, as well as Limited 10, while in IDPA she is an ESP and SSP Sharpshooter. Thomas has several Top Three Lady finishes to her name, including a recent finish as High Lady at the South Carolina Sectional and the Maryland State IDPA matches. She is a Navy Veteran, having served seven years, and now works in a civilian capacity for the Navy as a Financial Analyst. Thomas has her Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of Maryland University College and is currently enrolled in the Naval Postgraduate School’s “Executive Masters in Business Administration” program.

Laura Torres-Reyes first started her shooting career five years ago when she decided to practice to qualify for a deployment as a Medical Commander for the Air Force. She is currently serving as an Active Duty Air Force Colonel (0-6). Torres-Reyes also specializes in Occupational Medicine and practices as a Physician. She currently competes in IDPA as an SSP EX and has earned over thirty High Lady and High Military State titles in her past four years of competing in IDPA. Prior to being on Team ITI, Torres-Reyes competed as a member of Team Smith & Wesson for two years.

Team SIG SAUER Captain Max Michel, Jr., Wins Double Tap Championship

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- Max Michel, Jr., is keeping the big picture in mind as he continues to dominate the 2011 shooting season. This weekend’s victory at the Double Tap Championship is the latest win in a season that has seen the Team SIG SAUER captain finish no worse than second.

“Last year, my focus was on winning the USPSA Area Championships,” Michel said. ‘”This season is all about preparing for the IPSC World Shoot,” to be held in Greece in late September.

Michel said the course design at the Double Tap Championship puts an emphasis on speed, but also maintains a sense of humor.

“This match has to be the most fun you can possibly have while shooting a handgun. Robert Porter puts on some very fast-paced stages where hundredths of a second mean everything,” Michel said. “That’s why I love this event. I’ve won the Double Tap six of the past seven years and was really upset to miss the match a couple years ago. Glad I made it back.”

Michel finished with a score of 1693.9383 to win the Open Division and Overall title. His next match will be the Greek Nationals in Rhodes, Greece, June 14-20.

ACCOKEEK, MD --(Ammoland.com)- Team Benelli shooters Katie Harris and Kurt Miller won big at the 2011 Midwest

3-Gun Championship held at Fire-for-Effect Gun Range in Fayette, MO. Harris and Miller both took first place in their respective divisions – Harris winning in Tactical-Optics and Miller placing first in Tactical-Irons.

Katie Harris was on fire for the entire match taking 1st Place overall for both the Lady’s and Junior’s divisions of

Tactical-Optics. Kurt Miller (872.521) left the competition behind winning 1st overall in the Tactical-Irons Division. Team Benelli shooters, Rob Romero (692.35) took 4th overall, Jeremy Parker (659.84) took 6th overall, and Ben Fortin (588.71) took 8th overall in the Tactical-Optics Division. In the Heavy Metal Optics Division Team Benelli shooters, Jeff Cramblit (761.07) took 2nd overall and Jansen Jones (488.13) took 4th overall.

Coming up next on the 3-Gun Nation (3GN) Tour is the challenging MGM Ironman, June 5-11 in Parma, Idaho. 3GN Points are at stake along with a 3GN Shoot-Off event with a $5,000 payout. Ironman will be the fifth of ten 3GN Tour events this season.
