Although designed for youth and beginners, everyone is welcome to participate regardless of age or experience.

Shotshells and targets will be provided. Shooters may use their own shotguns but youth model shotguns will be available for those who don’t have a shotgun.

Young hunters and their mentors participating in the youth pheasant and quail hunting season, Nov. 7-8, are encouraged to participate, and adults who bring youth may shoot, too.

Young hunters lucky enough to bag a rooster that morning before the trap shoot may enter the long tail feather contest to win prizes.

Free Trap Shooting At Glen Elder, KS

Madison, NC –-(AmmoLand.com)- At the recent 2009 Grand American World Trapshooting Championships held in Sparta, Illinois, Remington’s Premier® STS target loads were the shotshells of choice for the sixth consecutive year.

Not only did Remington dominate Shell house sales, but shooters who used Remington ammo won more trophies than their competitors during the 10-day event in August. Grand American shooters bought more than 4,300 cases of Remington STS target loads – an amazing 54 percent of all ammo purchased – and then they used those loads to take home a total of 480 trophies, 133 more than the closest ammo competitor.

Remington shooter David Shaeffer, of Glyndon, Maryland, shattered a 21-year Singles Long Run Record by breaking 2,166 consecutive targets without a miss using Remington Premier STS Target Loads. His record-breaking Long Run streak, which began June 20, 2009, and ended two months later, bested the old record of 1,695 targets and earned David the title of 2009 ATA Clay Target Champion. Shaeffer also broke 100 straight from the 27 yard line to capture the Remington Nitro 27® Handicap Title during the Grand American. Asked why he uses Remington target loads, Shaeffer said, “I use them because they are the most consistent shell on the market today. They’re phenomenal.”

Another Remington shooter Stuart Welton, of Star, Idaho, was crowned Doubles Champion after breaking 100 straight in the program and then winning a shoot-off that went well into the night.

Several other Remington shooters performed well at Grand American events including Harlan Campbell of Tribune, Kansas, who earned championship titles in the Preliminary All-Around 400 and the Preliminary HOA 1500. Kay Ohye of North Brunswick, New Jersey, became a Veteran Champion in the Preliminary All-Around 400, Preliminary HOA 1000, Preliminary HOA 1500 and the HOA 2500. Meanwhile, Deborah Ohye-Neilson, also of North Brunswick, won Lady Champion titles in the Preliminary All-Around 400, Preliminary HOA 1000, Preliminary HOA 1500 and the HOA 2500.

Notable performances also were turned in by Shane Richardson of Bethune, Colorado; Rachel Hopkins of Pattonsburg, Missouri; Stephanie Sandler of New Ringgold, Pennsylvania; and Bronson Castleberry, manager of the Remington Gun Club in Lonoke, Arkansas, won Class AA in the Doubles Class Championship.

Remington STS Shotshells Still the Choice of Champions at the Grand American World Trapshooting Championships

SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. --(AmmoLand.com)- The week-long primitive weapons deer hunting season begins Saturday, Oct. 10. During primitive weapons season, hunters may use archery equipment (including crossbows), muzzleloading shotguns (20 gauge or larger) and muzzleloading firearms (.44 caliber or larger).

“Our primitive weapons deer season provides hunters the opportunity to hunt with traditional or inline black powder firearms or to continue hunting with archery gear,” said John Bowers, assistant chief of Game Management for the Wildlife Resources Division.

“Hunters are allowed to hunt either-sex deer during this week-long opportunity. Primitive weapons hunters have a wide variety of options depending on their personal choices and needs without being burdened by complex regulations.”

More than one million acres of public hunting land is available to hunters in Georgia, including more than 100 state-operated wildlife management areas where special hunts are offered throughout the season, including primitive weapons hunts. Dates and locations for these hunts are available in the 2009-2010 Georgia Hunting Seasons and Regulations guide, and WMA maps are available at www.gohuntgeorgia.com .

During the 2008 primitive weapons season, 58,264 hunters harvested 16,897 deer – a harvest rate that has remained relatively stable in recent years.

Hunters are allowed a season total of ten antlerless deer and two antlered deer (one of the two antlered deer must have a minimum of four points, one inch or longer, on one side of the antlers).

Under the new hunting and fishing license sales system, the primitive weapons license is no longer required to hunt during archery and primitive weapons seasons. However, a valid hunting and big game license is required, as is a deer harvest record. In most cases, a separate WMA license is required to hunt on a WMA.

All hunters, including archers, must wear at least 500 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange above the waist during primitive weapons season. Scopes and other optical sighting devices are considered legal for muzzleloading firearms and archery equipment.

Georgia is considered the top destination in the country for non-resident hunters and continues to draw tens of thousands of deer hunters from across the country each year. The state’s quality deer herd and the more than one million available acres of public hunting land serve as the main appeal.

The Mako Group Offers One-Of-A-Kind Shotgun Stocks

Civilian Marksmanship Program

CAMP PERRY, OHIO –-(AmmoLand.com)- More than 300 shooters and guests attended the second annual Camp Perry Marksmanship Center Open House on Saturday, 19 September, commemorating the center’s second year of operations and a new shooter’s mural.

Visitors were treated to several activities including the dedication of the unique Antolik Mural, all-day turkey shoots on the world-class airgun range and live participation on the Ohio Army National Guard’s Engagement Skills Trainer (EST).

The Antolik Mural, a 100-foot-long by 20-foot-high handcrafted wall painting, honors current and past Camp Perry competitors, but most importantly recognizes the development of the nation’s young shooters. The mural was painted by Jerry Antolik of Hudson, Wyoming and is perhaps the largest painting of its kind dedicated to shooting sports, according to Gary Anderson, Director of Civilian Marksmanship.

At the mid-day mural dedication ceremony, Anderson praised Antolik’s work and provided a brief history of shooting sports art around the world. In traveling the sports shooting world Anderson compared the new mural to ancient archery tomb paintings in Egypt, centuries-old German murals and art he saw in China during the 2008 Olympic Games.

“To my knowledge, there is no larger mural dedicated to shooting sports in the world than the Antolik Mural,” Anderson said. “It is truly one of a kind.”

The mural depicts indoor and outdoor shooting scenes from Camp Perry and features many familiar sights including the camp’s water tower, a tractor pulling a shooter shuttle, a bald eagle and the ever-present seagulls.

But the centerpiece of the mural is a display of shooters past and present, including a row of precision air rifle shooters which dominates the center of the 100-foot-long wall at the range’s entrance.

In his remarks Antolik told the audience that the three-month project was a labor of love and he thanked the CMP for its commitment to, and vision for the development of shooting sports in the U.S.

“I’ve been coming here a long time. It’s a great place that has a special quality unlike any other,” Antolik said. “It is an honor to display my artwork here.”

“I think the sweetest thing of all is that they dedicated my mural during a turkey shoot,” he said with tongue in cheek.

Visitors who fired on the airgun range were first given a safety briefing and sporter air rifle instruction and then an opportunity to win a turkey with the best center shot in groups of 10 shooters, firing 10 shots each with sporter air rifles. In all, 30 turkeys were awarded to participants. All equipment and pellets were provided by CMP.

Austin Jess, 15 and his grandfather Ron, 68 of Fremont, Ohio participated in the open house festivities for the second year. The St. Joseph Central Catholic High School student said he’s never shot competitively but enjoys coming to the marksmanship center.

“If I had more time I’d be interested in shooting competitively,” he said. Golf, basketball and his favorite sport of baseball keep him busy though.

“Actually, it’s really relaxing, but you need a lot of focus,” he said.

Bill Keaton, 53, of Grafton, Ohio visited the center for the first time and said he was surprised by the size of the facility. Keaton is a Cleveland Center air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration.

“I plan to shoot a whole lot more when I retire, but I’m not sure yet when that’s going to happen,” Keaton said. He is a 25-year veteran controller and helped work air traffic on September 11, 2001.

Keaton shoots regularly in a 12-week handgun league near home, but caught the air rifle bug at the open house. He later purchased a reconditioned Daisy sporter rifle at the CMP store and plans to practice at home.

Jake Gladwell, 12 and his father Tim, 45, of Sandusky, Ohio also visited Camp Perry for the first time. Jake said he heard about the open at school, researched it on the Internet and convinced his dad to participate.

“He told me about it last night,” Tim said, so the Gladwells took the opportunity to shoot the turkey match and visit the National Guard’s EST adjacent to the airgun range later.

The Gladwells shoot a number of rifles and shotguns at home and said they enjoyed shooting at the CMP’s new indoor range. They said they are likely to take advantage of the weekly public practice sessions on Tuesday evenings.

“We’ve always enjoyed target shooting and this was a lot of fun,” Tim said.

Several guests visited and “shot” on the National Guard’s EST simulator with converted A4 service rifles. Participants were given the opportunity to fire in an industrial scenario on a massive video screen. The objective was to shoot oncoming enemy soldiers who ran for cover between buildings, ore piles and other structures.

Each shooter was given 30-round magazines and could fire semi-auto or in three-shot bursts. Other than firing lasers at interactive targets and air-driven bolt actuators, the rifles function exactly like combat weapons, which saves a significant amount of ammunition for training purposes.

Arizona --(AmmoLand.com)- Students, are you looking for fun, competition, and the chance to meet new friends and be part of a team?

The Arizona Game and Fish Department’s 2009-10 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) season is ready to get underway, and students interested in learning about and competing in skeet, trap and sporting clays shotgun shooting are encouraged to find a club in their community.

The program is open to boys and girls from age 9 through 12th grades.

“Our SCTP is one of the best in the nation and we continue to see students become great athletes of clay target shooting through this team-based youth development program,” said Statewide Shooting Sports Coordinator, Ashley Lynch. “The mentoring, instruction, safety, and teamwork instilled by our certified coaches are second to none.”

The program is run similar to other youth-based athletics. The season runs from Oct 1, 2009 – May 1, 2010. Athletes can join at anytime depending on club availability. All of the SCTP clubs in Arizona are run 100 percent by volunteers. These dedicated volunteers are committed to teaching today’s youth to carry on the American tradition of shooting sports recreation.

“Shooting sports are an activity that any person with the desire can participate in. The structure of this program allows kids to have fun, compete, and learn safety and discipline skills,” said Lynch.

Production of Remington Model 870 Shotgun Tops 10 Million

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The remainder of the 2010 World Championship team for shotgun was selected at the 2009 Shotgun Fall Selection Match yesterday in Kerrville, Texas. Nineteen Double Trap and Skeet shooters will represent the U.S. next summer in Munich, Germany.

The top three finishers from a combination of the match scores from the 2009 USA Shooting National Championships as well as the match and final scores from the 2009 Fall Selection make up the 2010 World Team.

U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member Josh Richmond (Hilsgrove, Pa.), who is the 2009 Munich World Cup gold medalist, finished on top for the Open Double Trap Men with a total score of 627 targets. Richmond’s USAMU teammate and 2008 Olympian Jeff Holguin (Yorba Linda, Calif.) grabbed second place with 621 total hits. Rounding out the Open Men’s Double Trap team for next year’s World Championships will be 16-year-old Billy Crawford (Johnstown, Ohio), who finished third with 619 targets.

Crawford also finished in first place for the juniors with a match score of 573 targets, but since he qualified for a spot on the open team, Derek Haldeman moved up into the top spot for the juniors after firing 557 targets. Ian Rupert (Sunbury, Ohio) finished second with 557 targets and Kelcey DePatis (Donovan, Ill.) took the third spot with 450 targets.

Shari LeGate (Peyton, Colo.) also qualified for a spot on the 2010 World Championship team in the Women’s Double Trap event, which is only contested at the World Championships. LeGate finished with a match score of 437 targets.

USAMU member and 2008 Olympic gold medalist Vincent Hancock, who most recently won the gold medal at the 2009 Shotgun World Championships in August, claimed a spot on the 2010 World team by taking first place in the Men’s Skeet event with 515 targets. Hancock’s 2008 Olympic teammate Sean McLelland (Mission, Texas) grabbed the second spot with 508 targets and USAMU member Shawn Dulohery, a 2004 Olympian, took third with 506 targets.

Four-time Olympic gold medalist Kim Rhode (El Mote, Calif.) lead the way for the Skeet women with 508 total targets. Haley Dunn (Eddyville, Iowa) took second place with 505 targets and 2009 Shotgun World Championship Junior silver medalist Amber English (Colorado Springs, Colo.) grabbed the third spot with 497 hits.

Jon Michael McGrath (Tulsa, Okla.) took the top spot for the Junior Skeet Men with 506 hits, while B.J. Blanchard (Vidor, Texas) finished second with 503 targets. T.J. Bayer (College Station, Texas) earned the third spot after finishing with 499 targets.

Caitlin Connor (Winnfield, La.), the 2009 Minsk World Cup silver medalist, finished on top for the junior women with 484 targets. Brandy Drozd (Bryan, Texas) took second with 464 targets and Jaiden Grinnell (Port Angeles, Wash.) grabbed third place with 460 hits, rounding out the Junior Women’s Skeet team.

The 2009 Shotgun Fall Selection Match was held at Hill Country Shooting Sports Center in Kerrville, Texas and was the second of two matches held to select the team for the 2010 World Championships in Munich, Germany and is also the first “entry gate” in the 2012 Olympic Selection Process. Twelve trap shooters were selected to the 2010 World Championship team on September 13.

The top three athletes in each event will participate in up to three World Cup competitions in 2010, where they can earn points based on their final standing in those events. Athletes who accumulate 45 or more points in 2010 and 2011 may be nominated to the 2012 Olympic Team, depending on the number of Olympic participation slots available in each event.

Double Trap and Skeet Shooters Qualify for 2010 World Championship Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(AmmoLand.com)- Following the trap portion of the 2009 Shotgun Fall Selection Match, 12 trap shooters were selected to represent the U.S. at the 2010 World Championships in Munich, Germany.

The top three finishers from a combination of the match scores from the 2009 USA Shooting National Championships as well as the match and final scores from the 2009 Fall Selection will make up the 2010 World Team.

Representing the U.S. next summer in Munich in the Men’s Trap event will be 2008 Olympian Dominic Grazioli (San Antonio, Texas), who lead the way with 501 total targets. Olympic Training Center (OTC) Resident Athletes Jacob Turner (Richland, Wash.) and John Mullins (Bremerton, Wash.) will make up the second and third spots on the trap team after finishing with 500 and 497 targets respectively.

U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member and 1996 Olympian Theresa DeWitt (Cincinnati, Ohio) fired 468 targets to finish first for the women, while 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Corey Cogdell (Eagle River, Alaska) took second place with 463 hits. Susan Sledge (El Cajon, Calif.) rounds out the women’s team after finishing in third place with 462 targets.

In the Junior Men’s Trap competition, Jake Wallace (Castaic, Calif.) grabbed a spot on the 2010 World Championship team by finishing in first place with 487 targets. Morgan Harbison (Farmersville, Texas) took the second spot with 481 targets and Matthew Gossett (Springville, Ala.) finished third with 479 hits.

For the Junior Women, OTC Resident Athlete Rachael Heiden (Clinton, Mich.) will represent the U.S. in Munich next year after finishing in first place with 464 targets. Miranda Wilder (Diana, Texas) grabbed the second spot with 460 targets and Ashley Carroll (Solvang, Calif.) earned third place after firing 455 total targets.

The 2009 Shotgun Fall Selection Match is taking place at Hill Country Shooting Sports Center in Kerrville, Texas and will continue September 17-20 with the Skeet and Double Trap events. This is the second of two matches held to select the team for the 2010 World Championships in Munich Germany and is also the first “entry gate” in the 2012 Olympic Selection Process.

Shells are held in place with a unique, internal Santoprene™ elastomer rib that securely retains even heavy slug shells during vigorous movement or heavy recoil. Available in sidemount (SM) or Picatinny rail (PR) configurations. All necessary installation hardware, tools, and instructions included.

Remington Sidemount is available in 4-, 6-, and 8-round capacities and uses steel-on-steel, threaded adapters that replace the trigger group pins to anchor the shell holder securely to the receiver. Remington 870 shotguns require a shortened, tactical-style forend to accommodate 6- and 8-round sidemount units. Remington 1100/11-87 require minor forend alterations to fit the 8-round model.

Remington Picatinny is a 6-round model that features an integral Picatinny rail for mounting sights, Optics, or other accessories. The Arizona Game and Fish Department is hosting a seminar for new hunters on Friday, Sept. 11, followed by a traditional Arizona dove hunt on Saturday.

“This is basically an all-inclusive opportunity to learn how to hunt,” said Wildlife Manager Dave Carson. “All we require from participants 14 and older is to have a general hunting license, and those 16 and older will need a state migratory bird stamp. The department will provide mentored instruction, shotguns (20 available), the first box of shotgun shells and a great hunting opportunity.”

Space is limited and preregistration is required; for details contact David Carson at (480) 987-4825 or Randy Babb at (480) 324-3546. All participants must attend the safety seminar on Friday at the department’s Mesa regional office to be able to hunt on Saturday.

Families and friends hunting can reduce their cost and “try before you buy” by taking advantage of the new free two-day apprentice license. The licensed is issued to a licensed resident hunter over 18, and allows the mentor to take two new hunters afield at no cost. Mossberg Gun Named as Shotgun of the Year

FORT BENNING, Ga.— -(AmmoLand.com)- U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Soldier Spc. Jeff Holguin took home a silver medal today in Men’s Double Trap at the 2009 International Sport Shooting Federation Shotgun World Championships in Maribor, Slovenia.

Holguin hit 144 out of a possible 150 targets in the qualification round and scored a 42 in the finals, missing out on the gold medal by four targets to Italy’s Francesco D’Aniello, the 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist.

Holguin, a 2008 Olympian, was joined in the final round by USAMU teammates Staff Sgt. Josh Richmond and Sgt. Glenn Eller, the 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist, giving the Army three competitors to earn a berth in the final round of six. Eller finished fourth in the world and Richmond followed his comrade in fifth place.

The USAMU Soldiers’ solid performance enabled the U.S. team to set a new world record and take home the gold medal in the team portion of the championship.

USAMU Soldier takes silver at Shotgun World Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – -(AmmoLand.com)- Approximately 600 shooters from 70 countries will be competing at the 2009 ISSF Shotgun World Championships in Maribor, Slovenia with competition beginning on August 8 and running through August 16. Thirty U.S. athletes, including 15 juniors, are in Maribor vying for a spot on the podium at the biggest shotgun event of the year.

Three U.S. individual medalists from 2007 are returning to World competition in Maribor, hoping to improve on their World Championship medal tally. Josh Richmond (Hillsgrove, Pa.) won the bronze in Men’s Double Trap in Nicosia, Cyprus in 2007. Vincent Hancock (Eatonton, Ga.), the 2005 Shotgun World Champion, also took home the bronze in Men’ Skeet in 2007, while BJ Blanchard (Vidor, Texas) grabbed the bronze in Junior Men’s Skeet.

Six out of the eight 2008 U.S. Olympic team members for shotgun, including all four 2008 medalists, will also be competing in Maribor. For the ladies, Corey Cogdell (Eagle River, Alaska), the 2008 bronze medalist in Women’s Trap, will be looking to claim her first ever World Championship title. Four-time Olympian Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.), who is a two-time Olympic gold medalist as well as an Olympic silver and bronze medalist, will be competing for a spot on the podium in the Women’s Skeet event.

On the men’s side, U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) member Hancock, who is the 2008 Olympic gold medalist in Men’s Skeet will be looking to earn his second World Championship title in Maribor. Richmond, who was the Junior Men’s Double Trap Champion in 2005, will be joined by his fellow USAMU teammates Glenn Eller (Katy, Texas), the 2008 Olympic gold medalist, and 2008 Olympian Jeff Holguin (Yorba Linda, Calif.) in the Double Trap event. Like Richmond, Eller and Holguin were also members of the 2005 and 2007 World Championship teams. Competing in the Men’s Trap event will be 45-year-old Dominic Grazioli (San Antonio, Texas), a 2008 Olympian.

The first medals will be awarded at the Men’s Trap Final, which will take place on August 9. The Women’s Skeet and Women’s Trap Finals will be held August 11 and the Double Trap Final will take place August 13. The Men’s Skeet final will close out the event on August 16.

Thirty U.S. Shooters in Slovenia to Compete at Shotgun World Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Amber English (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won the silver medal in the Junior Women’s Skeet event at the 2009 ISSF Shotgun World Championships in Maribor, Slovenia today and the Junior Women’s Skeet team of English, Ali Chiang (Redwood Shores, Calif.) and Caitlin Connor (Winnfield, La.) took home the gold and set a Junior World Record in the team competition. The Junior Women’s Trap team also added to the U.S. medal tally, taking home the bronze.

English won her first ever international medal after firing a total score of 71 out of 75 targets to finish in second place behind Swedish shooter Therese Lundqvist. Lundqvist captured the gold with 74 hits, breaking the world record of 72 hits, which was set by U.S. shooter Haley Dunn in 2005.

Natalia Panas of Russia earned the bronze medal with a total score of 69 targets. Chiang finished in fourth place with 67 hits and after a three-way shoot-off for fifth place, Connor, the 2009 Minsk World Cup silver medalist, ended up in the sixth spot with 66 hits.

English, Chiang and Connor finished on top of the Junior Women’s Skeet team podium with a record score of 204 targets. The three teammates broke the previous World Record of 198 targets shot by Russia at the 2007 World Championship in Nicosia, Cyprus.

The Russian team won silver ranking 12 targets behind the U.S., with a total score of 192 targets, while Poland secured the bronze with 191 total hits.

The Junior Women’s Trap team of Molly Bender (Montoursville, Pa.), Brandi Hobbs (Edinboro, Pa.) and Kayle Browning (Wooster, Ark.) earned the bronze medal today, shooting a total of 185 targets. China won the team competition, shooting a total score of 202 targets and setting a new Junior World Record. The Spanish team, holder of the record shattered by team China, closed the match in second place, winning the silver with 186 hits.

Individually, Bender finished the highest for the Junior Trap Women with 64 targets to land in 11th place, while Hobbs ended in 15th place with 61 hits and Browning fired 60 targets to finish in 18th place.

The Junior Trap Women’s individual competition was won by the 18-year old Chinese shooter Qi Quiwen with a total score of 69 targets. Xu Tian, also of China, closed the match in second place with a total of 68 +1 hits. Xu shot-off against Rachel Yardy of Great Britain who finished in third place with a total score of 68 +0 targets.

In the Women’s Skeet event, four-time Olympian and 2008 Olympic silver medalist Kim Rhode (El Monte, Calif.) scored the highest finish for the U.S. team, barely missing a spot in the final after losing a shoot-off for sixth place. Rhode ended in seventh place with 71 total hits. Haley Dunn (Eddyville, Iowa) finished in 24th place with 64 targets and Jaiden Grinnell (Port Angeles, Wash.) landed in 29th place with 62 hits.

The defending World Champion, Christine Brinker of Germany, who is also the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, won the Women’s Skeet event with a total of 95 targets. The silver medal went to Thai shooter Sutiya Jiewchaloemmit with a total of 94 hits and Katiuscia of Italy took home the bronze with a total of 93+3 hits after winning a shoot-off against Russia’s Olga Panarina.

Corey Cogdell (Eagle River, Alaska), the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, finished the Women’s Trap event in 14th place today with 69 targets, which was the highest U.S. finish in that event. Susan Sledge (El Cajon, Calif.) finished in 34th place with 65 targets and 1996 Olympian and U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit member Theresa DeWitt (Cincinnati, Ohio) ended in 36th place with 64 targets.

Seventeen-year-old Italian shooter Jessica Rossi became the new Women’s Trap World Champion after climbing from fifth place to the top spot in the final with a total score of 92 targets. Russia’s Irina Laricheva won the silver with 90 hits. The 2008 Olympic gold medalist, Satu Makela-Nummela of Finland, started the final round with the highest qualification score of 74 hits, equaling the World Record, but shot 15 targets in the final to finish in third place with 89 total hits.

Women Set World Record at Shotgun World Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –-(AmmoLand.com)- The Men’s Junior Trap team of Collin Wietfeldt (Hemlock, Mich.), Jacob Turner, (Richland, Wash.) and Seth Politi (Lexington, Mass.) claimed the silver medal in the team competition at the 2009 ISSF Shotgun World Championships in Maribor, Slovenia today with a total score of 347 targets.

Italy won the team gold with 354 targets and the team bronze went to Portugal with 346 targets. Individually, Wietfeldt finished the highest for the U.S. in 7th place, while Turner took eighth place, each with 119 targets. Politi finished 49th with 109 targets.

Italy’s Valerio Grazini won the Men’s Junior Trap competition, securing the first gold medal of the 2009 Shotgun World Championships. Paco Machado of Spain took home the silver with 121 hits and the bronze medal went to Germany’s Daniel Wiesemann with a total score of 120 hits after winning 1 to 0 a shoot-off against Portugal’s Pedro Jorge Nun Parreira.

In the Men’s Open Trap event, 2008 Olympian Dominic Grazioli (San Antonio, Texas) scored the highest finish for the U.S., taking 21st place with 120 targets. Three-time Olympian and 1996 bronze medalist Lance Bade (Colorado Springs, Colo.) finished 54th with 116 targets and Matthew Wallace (Stanton, Tenn.) finished 87th with 111 hits.

Marian Kovacocy of Slovakia climbed up from fifth place to win the Men’s Trap gold medal with a total of 146 hits. Italy’s Massimo Fabbrizi won a shoot-off against Turkish shooter Oguzhan Tuzun at the conclusion of the final to secure the silver with a total score of 145 hits +1, while Tuzun settled for the bronze.

Vector Pro Lengthened Forcing Cone. Vector Pro features extended forcing cones that are over two inches longer than other systems. The taper is much more gradual than the 5-degree industry specification for even less shot deformation resulting in more uniform and consistent patterns. The Vector Pro geometry completely eliminates any step or double taper between the chamber and bore.

Speed Lock Forearm. With the new Maxus, Browning engineers have eliminated the traditional bulky screw-on magazine cap and replaced it with the patent-pending Speed Lock Forearm. This secure forearm attachment system makes taking down the Maxus for cleaning or storage faster and easier than ever before, and makes attaching or removing a sling a snap. By simply lifting a lever, the forearm is easily removed.

Speed Load Plus. Browning’s new patent-pending feeding system sends the first shell loaded into the magazine directly into the chamber. Now, unloading is just as easy with the Maxus. The speed unload feature makes emptying the magazine fast and easy, without having to cycle and chamber every shell with the bolt handle.

Turnkey Magazine Plug. The Maxus features the patent-pending Turnkey Magazine Plug that makes removing the plug simple by using any vehicle key. Combined with the Speed Lock System, the magazine plug can be removed from the Maxus in mere seconds.

Sporting clays is a form of clay pigeon shooting in which clay targets are thrown to simulate hunting scenarios. Some enthusiasts have referred to the challenging sport as “golf with a shotgun.” Turkey Shoot participants will compete for $100,000 in cash and prizes. Shooting events include the 200-Target Sporting Clays Championship with prizes for Concurrent divisions such as Ladies, Juniors, Subjuniors and Veterans, the 100-target Browning preliminary event, and the 50-bird Briley Squaded Sub-gauge competition, which is nearly sold out.

Rhett Simmons, NWTF director of special events, noted that the Turkey Shoot offers a competitive but friendly environment for shooters of all skill levels. Proceeds from the NWTF Turkey Shoot will benefit Wheelin’ Sportsmen NWTF, an outreach program that provides opportunities for men and women with disabilities to enjoy outdoor recreation activities.

The NWTF is a national nonprofit conservation organization that was founded in 1973 and has worked with wildlife agencies to restore wild turkey populations from 1.3 million wild turkeys to nearly 7 million today. Now, NWTF’s volunteers raise funds and work daily to improve critical wildlife habitat, increase access to public hunting land and introduce new people to the outdoors and hunting.

National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) Hall of Fame member and shooting instructor Casey Atkinson noted that sporting clays is a family sport that anyone can enjoy.

“Physical strength is not a factor, so everyone can compete on the same level and have a great time,” said Atkinson.

Expert shooter and multi-time NSCA champion Rick Hemingway added that the NWTF Turkey Shoot is always one the premier events on his list.

“It’s a fun-loving crowd, and the prizes the NWTF offers are some of the best for the money that you’ll find anywhere. I always have a great time,” Hemingway said.

The total prize package for the Turkey Shoot totals more than $100,000, including a raffle for a 2009 Chevrolet truck. One hundred guns will be given away as part of the prize package.

NWTF’s Annual Sporting Clays Shoot August 14-16

Arizona - -(AmmoLand.com)- The Arizona Friends of the NRA (National Rifle Association) and the NRA Foundation recently awarded the Arizona Game and Fish Department $25,000 in grant funds to purchase a mix of air gun rifles, air gun pistols, .22 rimfire rifles and shotguns to be used in introductory hunting and shooting sports programs.

“The NRA Foundation’s state grant program provides much needed funding toward expanding and improving our programs,” said Ashley Lynch, shooting sports program coordinator with Game and Fish. “The grant is an increase of $9,000 from last year’s grant and a portion will go to good use buying quality air gun rifles and pistols, which allows us to hold shooting events in areas that can’t accommodate .22 or shotgun shooting.”

Once purchased, youth shotguns and .22-caliber rimfire rifles will be packaged into “loaner kits.” These kits will be used by department staff and can be loaned to partnered sportsmen’s groups and other organizations to run marksmanship workshops or small game hunting camps designed to introduce families to shooting and hunting throughout the state.

Lynch added, “A key element to the success of these traditional American pastime programs is being able to provide participants with a quality, safe and functional firearm to make their first experience positive and rewarding.”

There continues to be a growing demand for target shooting. Each year, the department receives more requests from organizations like the Scholastic Clay Target Program, Boy Scouts of America, Future Farmers of America, hunter education instructors and more to host target-shooting events than they can run, mainly because of limited equipment resources.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation research reports indicate there are nearly 48 million men and women who are interested in shooting and are simply waiting for an invitation. Grants of this kind will assist the department’s already successful shooting education programs. Target shooting is self-rewarding, builds hand-eye coordination skills, and teaches patience, discipline, and the understanding and respect for firearms. Shooting sports and hunting are rated among the safest forms of outdoor recreation.

FORT BENNING, Ga. — Staff Sgt. Ryan Hadden of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit prevailed at the 2009 San Marino World Cup competition today, earning the gold medal in the Trap event.

Hadden, a Shotgun team member, was tied after the final round with the Czech Republic’s David Kostelecky, forcing a sudden-death shoot-off. Hadden came up victorious after the third round, hitting his target while his opponent missed his.

It is Hadden’s second gold medal winning performance in two World Cup events this year.

“I was confident,” Hadden said. “I was actually feeling better in the shoot-off than in the fourth-round of the match. I was able to keep it composed.”

Besides winning the gold medal, Hadden also earned himself the coveted U.S. Distinguished International Shooter Badge.

The badge, along with the Distinguished Rifleman and Distinguished Pistol Shot badge, is the United States’ highest award for marksmanship excellence.

It is one of the most highly coveted shooting awards in the U.S. today.

Hadden said he looks forward to celebrating with his family and teammates when he gets back to U.S. soil.

FORT BENNING, Ga. — Soldiers from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit’s Shotgun team had an extraordinary weekend, winning on both the International and Interservice stage.

At a World Cup Shotgun meet in San Marino, Spc. Joshua Richmond was awarded a bronze medal in the Double Trap event June 20. Richmond tallied a final score of 190, just losing out on a gold medal by three points to eventual champion Junjie Mo of China.

At the Interservice Championships at Fort Benning, Spc. Jeff Holguin crushed the field after a dynamic display, setting two Interservice records and winning the Double Trap event. He was followed by teammates Staff Sgt. Matt DePuydt and Sgt. 1st Class Joetta Dement, making it a clean sweep for the AMU.

In the Trap event, DePuydt took first-place and was followed by Dement, making it an extremely successful weekend for the Army and the AMU.

AMU Shotgun Team Wins Worldwide

KERRVILLE, Texas — -(AmmoLand.com)- The Second Annual Ag Clays 381 State Trap Shoot took place June 8 at the Hill Country Shooting Sports Range in Kerrville, where 121 shooters representing 23 schools formed 28 teams, including 10 mixed teams, 15 all male teams and 3 all female teams.

The Ag Clays 381 Trap activity began three years ago by Charlie Wilson, Mobile Shooting Range coordinator for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The shoot is for those students enrolled in the Agriculture Science elective course, Ag. 381, Wildlife and Recreation Management. The event is open to any student currently or previously enrolled in Ag 381 who has completed hunter education certification as part of the curriculum. This means that a student can enroll as a sophomore and compete in the event for three years until they graduate.

“The requirements follow the usual UIL rules of no pass, no play, but have much more stringent requirements through the Future Farmer’s of America (FFA) Career Development Education (CDE) rules,” said TPWD Hunter Education Coordinator Terry Erwin, who added it is possible to gain scholarships to college if one’s scores are consistently good enough. “We look at it as a recruitment tool for young people to learn a sport that may be carried on throughout their entire lives,” said Erwin.

There was more than a 100 percent increase in shooters from last year with more than half of them beginning as new shooters in the program. River Star Farms, a company who produces items as fundraiser products for FFA chapters, donated and catered the noon meal with Sloppy Joes, chips and drinks. There were 82 male and 39 female shooters from high schools as far north as Littlefield in the Pan-handle, as far south as Corpus Christi and east at Wills Point.

Texas Takes Home Honors at Ag Clays 381 State Trap Shoot

FAIRFAX, VA - -(AmmoLand.com)- The Remington Rangers Venture Crew 111 and Veterans of Foreign War Post 7383 will host their second annual NRA Day NRA/ATA Trap Camp “Mid-Summer Blast” at the Durham County Wildlife Club in Morrisville, North Carolina. The event will be held July 13 and 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

During this two-day camp, participants will learn the basics of trapshooting from NRA and ATA Certified Instructors and Coaches. The camp also includes the NRA Basic Shotgun Safety Course and the opportunity to speak with shooting coaches about team activities. Boy Scouts will be eligible to earn the Shotgun Merit Badge or Venture Elective.

The cost of the event is $100.00 and includes all ammunition, firearms, t-shirts, instructional materials, and lunch for both days. Participants may bring their own shotgun.
