“Interest in short-barreled rifles has never been greater,” said Jeff Creamer, SIG SAUER Director of Product Management. “What used to be primarily a military or law enforcement configuration is now being sought by the consumer market.”

As barrel and gas system length is reduced, reliable function can be compromised. Purchasing a factory-built SBR designed from the ground up and fine-tuned to be a short-barreled system greatly increases reliability and function.

SIG SAUER has previously offered complete short-barreled upper receivers for their SIG516 rifles, but this is the first time complete rifles are to be offered in SBR configurations.

Preferred by entry teams and CQB specialists for greater maneuverability in tight places, SBRs deliver significant ballistic performance over pistol-caliber weapons. With the growth of the suppressor market, SBRs have also seen increased interest from those who want a suppressed rifle without introducing additional length.

The Factory SBR Program will offer shortened variants of all SIG SAUER semi-automatic rifles, from the .22LR SIG522 to the 7.62 NATO SIG716. Each platform will have a SBR-tuned gas system to ensure maximum performance and reliability.

Eric at the Gunmart Blog

People turned out in record numbers this year to be apart of the amazing event that is SHOT Show. This year SHOT Show set an overall attendance record of more than 61,000 people (up from 57,390 last year), as well as a record for media coverage with 2,466 representatives (up from 2,074 last year). More than 1,000 media representatives also attended the SHOT Show Media Day at the Range event.

I think that these figures are a powerful testament to the fact that America’s love affair with firearms is indeed in full swing. The industry is booming right now and last week people all over the globe were overcome with the desire to be witness to all of the latest and greatest items that were being showcased at this year’s show.

This year we saw everything from the most predictable expansions of current lines to brand new surprise offerings that I personally never would have thought would be coming. There were also several new start-up companies offering some amazing new and unique niche products. We saw everything from over-the-top sensationalistic silliness (Did you see “The Ultimate Zombie AK-47″? Hello!) to brilliant new twists on old familiar platforms. There were amazing things being showcased ranging from a $130,000 Beretta shotgun to a custom Glock Motorcycle and just about everything in between.

I also think that its safe to say that the industry is planning to make 2012 “the year of the zombie“. From the aforementioned Ultimate Zombie AK-47… to zombie themed lime-green ARs… to zombie themed optics… to lime-green zombie knives and pistol bayonets… to zombie themed shooting targets… zombies and zombie killing gear were everywhere. Heck, I even think that somewhere on the convention floor they might have had actual zombies jumping over actual real life sharks… or maybe not… I digress.

So, who were the big winners at SHOT Show this year?

Well, lets look at this from an “Internet buzz” viewpoint. According to my blog hits and keyword search data – and keep in mind that I covered almost everything that went down at SHOT – it looks like the big winners are as follows…

1. Ruger (In a statistical landslide)
Ruger made a big push in the run up to SHOT Show by announcing the release of several new firearms. This marketing blitz made a really big splash in the online firearms community and was in my opinion a huge success. They also had everyone on the edge of their Internet seats when Jeff Quinn of GunBlast.com teased the entire world by mentioning the phrase “Ruger SR-30″ in one of his videos.

2. Springfield Armory
Without a doubt, the biggest surprise at SHOT was the unveiling of the new Springfield XD-S single stack .45 ACP (soon to be also available in 9mm and .40 S&W). The buzz and excitement generated online was immediate and decisive. People are very excited about this new handgun and will be chomping at the bit to get to put down their money on this new design.

3. The .300 AAC Blackout 
I think that it is safe to say that the .300 AAC Blackout is now here to stay, and we can probably stop referring to it as a wildcat cartridge. Since its inception, the response from consumers to the new cartridge has been nothing but positive. SHOT Show 2012 showed that the industry giants are now also officially behind the cartridge. A wide range of manufacturers will be offering factory rifles and uppers chambered for the cartridge in 2012 as well as several ammunition companies now offering loads and components for reloading.

4. Sig Sauer 
Sig Sauer made a big impression by rolling out a boat load of new pistol and rifle offerings. The product that generated the most buzz on my blog turned out to be their new P224 pistol. The P224 looks like its going to be one heck of a pistol and something that should greatly appeal to the Sig Sauer faithful as well as anyone else who is looking for a top-notch concealed carry pistol.

5. Daniel Defense (In a virtual tie)
My blog saw a great deal of traffic from people searching for pictures and information about what Daniel Defense was bringing to SHOT Show. They introduced some new flash hiders and muzzle brakes, as well as a rifle chambered in the above mentioned .300 AAC Blackout (which will begin to ship at the end of this month). I personally am a big fan of their rifles, and for Daniel Defense to feel the need to get behind the .300 AAC Blackout I think it says a great deal about the cartridge going forward.

5. US Palm (In a virtual tie)
US Palm introduced two new products this year that really have people excited. They introduced a quad stack AK magazine that will be available in several different capacities as well as a take down AK style rifle. They are both really cool products and the breakdown AK is absolutely amazing. What US Palm has basically done is to create an AK style rifle that can be broken down and packed away in a small little package without any tools and in a matter of seconds. Put a folding stock on that thing and/or make it into an SBR and you just may have one of the best bug-out-bag guns ever made.

The other big thing that really stood out at SHOT Show 2012 is the fact that most all of the big new products that were announced are either already in the pipeline or will be shipping in the very near future. This is huge! I think that it has now become apparent to most of the big players in the firearms industry that if you are going to cash in on the massive consumer demand generated by all of those awesome new products, then you have to have the supply available to meet that demand. This is going to be a big win/win for both the industry and the consumer.

I tell ya what… its a great time to be a gunnie, isn’t it!?

We spend a lot of our hard earned money on expensive pistols that never seem to hold up to their end of the deal and do their job, which is hit the target they are aimed at!

Unfortunately for a shooter nowadays the excuse that a modern manufactured, out of the box handgun is “off” is generally not the case.

Subjects that are often overlooked or misinterpreted when dealing with handguns and precision should be looked at before the equipment is blamed.

There are only two things needed to make a successful shot, Stabilizing the Muzzle on the target (referenced by the sights) and Pressing the Trigger to the rear without adding extra movement to the muzzle. Directly related to the fit of the pistol to the shooters hand it is often neglected when a handgun purchase is made.

Would you by a pair of shoes that aren’t comfortable? Trigger Finger Placement on the trigger is important. If the index finger lands on the side of the trigger because of improper fit the possibility for unwanted movement taking place as the trigger is pressed can cause a miss down range.

With this statement being made the other subject is sights. Sight Picture, or how the sights are viewed on the target when the front and rear sights are aligned is a topic sometimes misunderstood by the shooter.

It is important to know where the bullet will impact in relation to your sights. Sights are often broken down into two types, point of aim/point of impact (commonly called “combat” sights) and traditional target sights (or six o’clock hold). Mixing a target hold with combat style sights will generally result in shots impacting low, and vice versa.

Keep these subjects in mind next time you find yourself cursing at your gun for not hitting the target!

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)-  Team SIG SAUER Captain Max Michel, Jr., brought his United States Practical Shooting Association regular season to close this weekend with a second-place finish at the Area 8 Championship in Fredericksburg, Va.

Competitors came into the match concerned about the range conditions in the aftermath of last week’s hurricane Irene.

“Luckily, the brunt of the storm missed the range,” Michel said. “Jeff Salzberg and his staff made sure all the facilities and stages were in great shape.”

The courses also ran on the large side, requiring a good deal of movement from competitors. With a fairly moderate round count, the challenge was on movement between shooting positions.

“The stage designers definitely put the “run” in “run and gun” with these stages,” Michel said. “This really put a premium on my footwork as well as how I planned out each stage.”

Michel finished with 1174.5309, just 4.51 percentage points behind the winner.

Michel now turns his attention to the USPSA Open Nationals, to be held Sept. 15-21 in Las Vegas. After that, Michel finalizes his preparation for the International Practical Shooting Confederation’s World Shoot XVI. Michel will be representing the United States as a member of the Open Division team. The match will be held in Rhodes, Greece, in late September.

“The World Shoot has been in the back of my mind all year, guiding my physical and mental training,” Michel said. “I can’t wait to get back to Greece and represent my country once again.”

In conclusion, maintain the condition of your holster, tie up the loose ends on your jacket draw strings and perform a garment sweep after reholstering.

Held in Frostproof, Fla., the Pro-Am Championship has become one of the more popular matches among competitors and spectators alike. Similar to a drag race, the scoring of the all-steel match is simple: Who ever knocks down the most targets within the par time wins.

“It’s just a fun match to shoot,” Michel said. “Being a top shooter himself, Phil Strader (match director) knows how to keep the atmosphere light but still be competitive.”

With a score of 240 targets down, Michel was a mere seven plates from the top spot. Michel won five of the eight stages.

In general, European courses of fire are longer and place a greater premium on accuracy, Michel said. “Over the longer stages, the little inefficiencies quickly add up,” he said. “To score well, you’ve got to be precise in your motions as well as your shooting.”

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- Max Michel, Jr., is keeping the big picture in mind as he continues to dominate the 2011 shooting season. This weekend’s victory at the Double Tap Championship is the latest win in a season that has seen the Team SIG SAUER captain finish no worse than second.

“Last year, my focus was on winning the USPSA Area Championships,” Michel said. ‘”This season is all about preparing for the IPSC World Shoot,” to be held in Greece in late September.

Michel said the course design at the Double Tap Championship puts an emphasis on speed, but also maintains a sense of humor.

“This match has to be the most fun you can possibly have while shooting a handgun. Robert Porter puts on some very fast-paced stages where hundredths of a second mean everything,” Michel said. “That’s why I love this event. I’ve won the Double Tap six of the past seven years and was really upset to miss the match a couple years ago. Glad I made it back.”

Michel finished with a score of 1693.9383 to win the Open Division and Overall title. His next match will be the Greek Nationals in Rhodes, Greece, June 14-20.

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- Team SIG SAUER shooter Matt Cheely opened his 2011 competitive season with a win over 81 other production shooters at the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) Ohio Sectional Championship over the weekend.

“It was a relatively wide open match, with the stages requiring lots of shooting on the move,” Cheely said. “Some unique stage designs incorporating multiple activated targets played to my strengths and helped to push me to the win.”

Cheely’s score of 1096.1856 was less than one percentage point better than the second place shooter. Next up for Cheely will be the USPSA Area 5 Championship in Barry, Ill., on June 15. In the Production class, Cheely uses a P226® USPSA model.

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- Max Michel, Jr., captain of Team SIG SAUER, brought home a second-place finish in the International Practical Shooting Confederation’s Med Cup in Cheval-Blanc, France, over the weekend.

With 24 stages shot over three days, the Med Cup is twice as long as most U.S. shooting matches. This required Michel to adjust his normal shooting strategy, which was a challenge.

“I made some bad tactical decisions on Day Two,” Michel said. “But I learned quite a bit that should help me improve my training regimen for the ISPC World Shoot in October.”

Adding to the challenge, Michel began this Med Cup campaign feeling a bit under the weather. “My family had been fighting a bug and I picked it up right before I left. Let’s just say it was a long flight,” he said.

The Med Cup is the first of three European campaigns on the schedule for Michel. In June, he’ll compete in the Greek Nationals as a warm-up to the IPSC World Shoot that begins in September. Michel will represent the United States as part of the open division squad.

Michel’s next match will be the Double Tap Championship in Wichita Falls, Texas, June 2-4.

Rolla, MO --(Ammoland.com)- I have resisted the temptation to test firearms for the WON because I know that if I like them, I will probably buy them.

That could get expensive. Since I had never fired a SIG Sauer firearm, I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity. So, I decided to try out the SIG P238 Nitron. I am glad I did.

My profession allows me to carry concealed. The drawbacks I have encountered carrying concealed firearms is being able to conceal and access the weapon.

The first small firearm I purchased to carry conceal was the Ruger LCP, which is also a .380. Initially I was pretty excited since I could adequately conceal it. I didn’t particularly enjoy shooting it. The grip was small and thin and didn’t feel good in my hand. The sights are fixed and black. In poorly lit environments, they were hard to see. I ended up painting the top of the front sight with correction fluid, which helped me pick up my front sight. I really wanted to find a firearm offering improved options that I enjoyed shooting. When I researched .380’s, I was attracted to the SIG P238, which is a similarly sized .380. It was just what I was looking for! I am pretty sure I won’t be carrying the LCP again after testing the P238. Maybe I will hand it down to my husband.

The features of the P238 that appealed to me include its compact size, the 1911 style frame, the adjustable front and rear sights with night sights, and the feel of the grip. The P238 is solidly constructed.

I had some initial issues when I tested the P238. Although the firearm is not perfect, mere awareness of the issues will most likely prevent any problems. Fortunately, SIG Sauer provides this information on either their website and/or in their accompanying user manual. Personally, I only look through manuals after I experience problems.

The first lesson the P238 taught me was not to use old ammunition. Since .380 ammunition is unavailable most of the time, my coworker provided some to me. The box was worn and the casings were tarnished. Perhaps that should have been my first clue. After firing the weapon and experiencing multiple malfunctions, I decided to take a closer look at the mechanics of the firearm. My first thought was that the firearm had packing grease that was needed to be removed. I took the gun apart. This led me to my second lesson; always research how to disassemble a weapon before you do it. If not, you may make a mistake similar to mine.

When I disassembled the firearm, I broke it down to the operator level. I cleaned the weapon to see if that was the cause of my malfunctions. I figured out that in order to reassemble the weapon, the operator must depress the ejector, which protrudes from the top of the lower receiver. The gun is rather small and my fingers were too big to depress it enough to slide the upper receiver onto the lower receiver. I decided to use a punch to depress the ejector. When I depressed the ejector, I apparently depressed it too far and lost the spring tension. I realized something went wrong, so I completely disassembled the weapon. I felt comfortable taking the gun all the way down. Soon I realized I was in a bit over my head. I looked for assistance on YouTube, which offers videos on assembly and disassembly of most firearms. I found a video and reassembled the gun.

I was confused by what I had experienced when disassembling the gun, so I went to the SIG website. There, I found a warning, which states that “over extension of the ejector may cause it to bind…” and that “it must be sent back to the factory” for repair by a certified armorer. I had already reassembled the weapon and it was in working order. I conducted safety checks that reinforced my belief that the gun was functional. Although it was recommended to send the gun back to the factory, I didn’t. I do not recommend disobeying the manufacturer’s recommendations, but I am an armorer (just not for that weapon).

During my research, I also discovered that old ammunition could cause malfunctions. I purchased new ammunition and fired about 200 rounds through it. The trigger pull is heavy, (7.5 – 8.5 lbs.) I had one failure to eject. After a sight adjustment, I found the gun to be very accurate. Most importantly it was comfortable to shoot.

Thoughts on Shooting Practice with George Harris

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- Shooting practice is something that we do to improve or maintain our skills with a firearm.

For a lot of us it is a trip to the range with a massive lead launching into the direction of the target and we call it a day.

If we are serious however, we will go to the range with a plan, and stick to it, leaving a little room to freelance at the end. There should always be some fun with the work.

The foundation to practice is dry work. You must do the dry work to condition the eyes, hands, and brain to work together with out the distraction of the noise or movement of the gun during firing.

Once we shoot each drill in the plan dry it is time to go to live fire.

It is important to practice each drill very slow and methodical at first so that we can detect and correct any deficiencies in the efficiency of our delivery. Once the unnecessary movement is eliminated the speed with which we deliver the shots will increase automatically.

After the drills in your plan have been completed, save a magazine of ammunition just for you. You may not know what to do with the magazine when you start but you will by the time you finish.

I usually treat myself to a Bullet Hole or Reset Drill if I am by myself or a Now Drill if I have a partner. That way, I finish having improved or validated a skill set with the fun of shooting something at the foundational level that is still a challenge to shoot clean.

“This was not one of my better match performances,” Michel said. “My equipment ran great, but I just didn’t find that perfect balance between speed and precision.”

Michel earned 1008.5674 points, just 7.2087 points out of the top spot. Last year, Michel began his successful quest to become the first person to win all eight USPSA Area Championships in the same year with a victory at the Area 6 Championship.

Next up for Michel will be the Med Cup in Cheval-Blanc, France, May 9-16.

In Parma, Idaho, teammate Kepa Zubizaretta made his first match as part of Team SIG SAUER a victory in the 1911 Centennial Match at the Parma Rod and Gun Club. His overall score of 178.71 and three stages wins earned him the outright title.

“I picked up my SIG SAUER 1911 a few days before the match and only had the chance to run two magazines through it,” Zubizaretta said. “Right out of the box my pistol ran great and was dead on accurate.”

U.S. Practical Shooting Association

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. --(Ammoland.com)- The U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) Area 6 Regional Handgun Championship is set to begin Friday with a host of industry sponsors, making this one of the top shooting matches of the season.

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- Max Michel, Jr., captain of Team SIG SAUER, continued his strong start to the 2011 shooting season by setting a world record en route to victory at this weekend’s U.S. Steel Nationals in Titusville, Florida.

As the first Steel Challenge match of the season, the U.S. Steel Nationals attracts the top speed shooters from around the world. Competitors are often separated by razor-thin margins, as confirmed last year when Michel finished second, a mere 1/100th of a second behind the first-place winner.

“This match always pushes me to the limits,” Michel said. “The level of competition here allows practically no room for mental or equipment errors. Today, everything came together perfectly.”

Michel posted an overall time of 75.68 seconds, beating the previous record set in 2008. This is Michel’s third U.S. Steel Nationals victory in the past five years.

Next up for Michel will be the USPSA Area 6 Championship in Frostproof, Florida, April 14-16.

A Michigan native, Matt Cheely graduated from the Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelors degree in Product Design and Development. When not competing for Team SIG SAUER, Cheely works as a Diesel Engine Performance Engineer for Detroit Diesel. Cheely has been competing for the past five years in USPSA National Championships and has garnered multiple Top 10 National finishes. Cheely has also won several major IPSC matches in Canada, and is a three division Grand Master (GM) in Production, Limited and Limited 10.

Rodney May
Rodney May started his shooting career as a hobby while working as a Nuclear Technician. Impressed by his shooting skills, he was approached in 2003 by Mid-South Institute of Self-Defense Shooting to join their ranks. For the past eight years he has served as a Firearms Instructor, teaching Navy SEALS, Army Special Forces and various Federal Agencies. May specializes in 3-Gun competitions and recently won the Alabama Match Overall Limited and placed second in Production at the USPSA Area 6 Championships. May is a Grand Master Production Shooter and is in the process of becoming a Grand Master Limited Shooter.

Kepa Zubizareta
New to Team SIG SAUER, Kepa Zubizareta currently works for a medium-sized police department in the northwest as a patrol officer. He has been shooting all of his life and started shooting competitively in 2005. Since then he has risen to Master Class in both Limited and Production Divisions, and holds several state Championships in both USPSA and IDPA in Idaho, Utah, Missouri and Nevada. He has finished in the top 16 at the USPSA Nationals, and has won the Gold Medal at the Western States Police and Fire Games for Individual Handgun Competition. He recently won the USSA Pro-Am amateur division title and finished this year’s match with a stage win in the Pro division. He has traveled across the country each year for numerous USPSA matches and looks to expand his competition to include
3-Gun and IDPA matches.

Pete Milionis
New to Team SIG SAUER, Petros “Pete” Milionis is a Chicago Police Officer with more than 14 years of experience, including serving as the primary firearms/carbine instructor for the S.W.A.T. team for the past 10 years. Milionis was also a full-time operational member of the team, serving as an element leader in the execution of Hostage Rescue/Barricaded Subjects and High Risk Search Warrants. He currently serves as a subject matter expert and lead instructor for the U.S. State Department Anti-Terrorism Assistance Program in the training of high-threat protection details responsible for the protection of national leaders. Milionis has been competitive in USPSA for the past decade, earning the classification of Grand Master. He has won numerous championship titles, including being the four-time Steel Challenge IDPA World Champion and two-time Steel Challenge IDPA National Champion, as well as High Law Enforcement USPSA National Champion.

Our movement through out the world we live in requires that we use our peripheral vision unconsciously to keep from tripping over objects in our path or bumping into things to our side or over our head.

Generally speaking, if we look directly in front of us our central vision is on a specific object which holds our interest. Our eye is taking in information at angles from 50 degrees to over 90 degrees away from our visual point of interest that we mostly ignore at a conscious level. Sub consciously we process all of the information to allow us to keep from stumbling (literally) through life as we live from day to day.

What this means to a shooter and tactician is that if we cultivate a peripheral awareness of our world around us we will become aware of a whole different dimension of our surroundings. Dangers that we might have missed previously will be easily recognized and our skill at hitting targets not directly in our line of sight will become a reality rather than a wish.

Start cultivating your peripheral vision as you read this by simply looking straight at the text in front of you but being aware of the colors, shapes and recognizable objects that surround it as much as 180 degrees left and right. Without looking away from the screen, point at an object to one side or the other, then look at the object. Notice that you are pointing directly at it.

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- Team SIG Captain Max Michel secured a first place victory in the Open Division, as well as taking home the Overall Champion title, on his home turf at the 2010 Louisiana Gator Classic, held October 28-31, 2010 at the Southern Shooting Center in Thibodaux, LA.

This was Michel’s first time competing in the Gator Classic in nearly ten years.

It is a USPSA Level II Match comprised of 12 stages and more than 300 rounds.

Michel competed against 68 of Louisiana’s finest shooters in the Open Division and finished with 1585.0000 match points, or 100%, to ensure his Open Division and Overall Champion shooting titles.

“I was so excited to have the opportunity to compete in the Louisiana Gator Classic. I moved back to Louisiana about 18 months ago and this was my first match in the area as my travel schedule just doesn’t allow for local competitions,” commented Michel. “It just felt good to get back to my roots and have some fun with old shooting buddies and family. It was exactly what I needed at this point in the season.”

Michel’s next competition is the Area 2 Championships, held at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club in Mesa, AZ from November 10-14 2010. The Area 2 is the final Area Championship Michel must win in order to be the first person to win all eight Area Championships in a single year.

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- Team SIG walked away with two top ten finishes this past weekend at the 2010 USPSA Production Nationals, held October 14-16, 2010 at the Desert Sportsman’s Rifle & Pistol Club in Las Vegas, NV.

Rodney May came in third in the Grand Master Class in the Production Division and Fifth Place Overall for Production Division. Team SIG Captain, Max Michel, tried his hand in the Production Division and placed tenth.

More than 115 of the nation’s top shooters came out to compete in 18 challenging stages at the USPSA Production Nationals.

May started off strong by winning the first stage of competition, which was ironically the SIG SAUER sponsored stage. He placed in the top ten in 11 of 18 stages and finished with 1542.8145 match points, or 93.89%.

“The USPSA Production Nationals were an incredible experience. The level of concentration one must exhibit in the desert is both exhilarating and challenging,” commented May.

“I held first place for the first two days, but had one bad stage that cost me the title. This competition takes a lot of discipline to shoot accurately. I’m proud to say that our 9mm X5 Allrounds ran flawlessly in the desert heat and sand.”

May will be competing next in the Arkansas Section Multi Gun Championship, held at the Old Fort Gun Club in Fort Smith, AR from October 30-31, 2010.

Michel placed in the top ten in 9 of 18 stages and finished with 1449.3093 match points, or 88.52%.

“The Production Nationals were a very difficult competition with some great shooters competing for the championship. As an Open shooter, Production is a very new division for me but I truly enjoyed it,” commented Michel.

“With so many things to re-learn, I find it an interesting challenge that I look forward to facing more of in the future.”

Michel’s next competition is the Area 2 Championships, held at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club in Mesa, AZ from November 10-14 2010. The Area 2 is the final Area Championship Michel must win in order to be the first person to win all eight Area Championships in a single year.
