FNH USA and USPSA Reward Member Recruitment Effort

LOS OSOS, Calif. --(AmmoLand.com)-  Going into its 19th season of revolver competition, the International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts (ICORE) announced that the legendary 158-year old firearms maker Smith & Wesson will not only sponsor the organization’s annual International Revolver Championships but also six regional competitions across America.

The 19th Annual Smith & Wesson International Revolver Championships will take place June 4-6 at the Hogue Action Pistol Range in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The match is the highlight of the revolver shooting season and more than 250 of the nation’s top revolver shooters, as well as several from outside the United States, are expected to compete.

The remaining regional matches are scheduled for April 10 when the 13th Annual Southwest Regional will be held in San Luis Obispo, May 1 and 2 when the Rocky Mountain Regional will take place at the WCFW High Plains Shooting Range in Galeton, Colo., May 2 when the Hartford Gun Club in East Granby, Conn. will host the New England Regional, July 18 when the Central States Regional gets underway in Buchanan, Mich. at the Bend of the River Conservation Club and September 26 when the Ontelaunee Rod & Gun Club in New Tripoli, Pa. plays host to the East Coast Regional.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --(AmmoLand.com)- Smith & Wesson Corp., hosted the 3rd Annual International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) Indoor National Championships over the weekend, awarding five division titles during the three-day event.

Despite inclement weather conditions that blanketed the northeast, over 250 competitors took part in the IDPA event, which is considered by many to be one of the premier matches of the season.

As the smoke settled after 4,000 plus rounds of spent ammunition, five national champions were named including Team Smith & Wesson members Jerry Miculek and David Olhasso. Competing in the Enhanced Service Revolver (ESR) Division, the legendary Jerry Miculek stood atop the leader board after capturing the division title for an unprecedented ninth time.

With his Smith & Wesson Model 625 revolver, Miculek captured the ESR title with a 29.62-point lead over the closest competitor. In the Custom Defensive Pistol (CDP) Division, fellow Smith & Wesson teammate David Olhasso successfully defended his division title using an M&P45 pistol. Olhasso’s final score of 158.35 was enough to capture the division title, while also earning him the coveted High Industry award.

“Due to the hard work and ingenuity that our match directors, range staff and Smith & Wesson team members have demonstrated over the last three years, the IDPA Indoor Nationals is one of the most highly anticipated and enjoyed matches of the season,” said Tom Kelly, Vice President of Marketing for Smith & Wesson.

“In spite of the winter storms that kept several competitors from attending, this year’s match was extremely successful. By taking advantage of the unique atmosphere of the Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center and a dedicated group of range and safety officers, we were able to incorporate some very challenging courses of fire. Smith & Wesson is honored to have had the opportunity to host the match for a third consecutive year and we would like to congratulate and thank all of the participants who contributed to its success.”

Throughout the three-day event, additional members of Team Smith & Wesson delivered solid performances. Craig Buckland, fresh off winning two division titles in January, earned 1st Place in Master Class in the Stock Service Revolver (SSR) Division competing with his Smith & Wesson Model 67.

Fellow teammate Tony Phan took home 3rd Place in the Master Class of the CDP Division shooting an M&P45 pistol and John Bagakis was awarded 2nd Master Class in the ESR Division. Tony Miele, Manager of the Smith & Wesson Performance Center, earned 2nd Place in the SSR Expert Class. Rounding out top finishes with Smith & Wesson firearms was Dan Burwell, who secured 1st Place Master in the Stock Service Pistol (SSP) Division along with the Most Accurate award shooting an M&P9L.

The 2010 Indoor National Championships featured 12 exciting courses of fire involving low-light and no-light conditions, moving targets and defensive shooting scenarios. In addition to the three-days of intense competitions, participants had the opportunity to participate in a variety of events including Smith & Wesson factory tours and training seminars.

Over 250 competitors fired on 12 stages of fire at this year’s IDPA Indoor Nationals hosted by the Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center in Springfield, MA. Weather proved to be a challenge for competitors this year with the winter storms pummeling the northeast. Several weren’t able to attend, but the rest successfully braved the conditions to vie for national titles at the three day event.

Was the match challenging?
Consider the results. The spread between the top scores in the divisions was significant. 354 Procedural Errors were issued, 158 Failures to Neutralize and 161 hits on Non-Threats. In a sport that stresses accuracy, penalizing for improper use of cover and failure to follow stage procedures, competitors earned a whopping total 26,997 points down. Average that over the total number of shooters who completed the match, that’s over 100 points per shooter!

Top names in the shooting sports battled for titles in each of the five divisions.

EOTAC’s Bob Vogel, a dominating presence in IDPA, posted the fastest the fastest time of 144.85 seconds. He also won Enhanced Service Pistol and High Law Enforcement. Team Smith & Wesson’s Dave Olhasso was next in posting the fastest overall time.

Even though a favorite to win the Custom Defensive Pistol division, Olhasso won the coveted High Industry title besting Dave Sevigny (Glock). Todd Jarrett (StrikeForce) and Phil Strader (S&W) to name just a few. Sevigny’s score of 167.17 earned him the Stock Service Pistol Division title overDan Burwell (Burwell Gunsmithing).

Burwell proved that being Most Accurate in the match had it’s benefits as he was just 3.31 seconds away from the Division Title.

No surprise, the legendary Jerry Miculek of Team Smith & Wesson added yet another IDPA National Title to his list, easily capturing Enhanced Service Revolver. Josh Lentz posted a commanding lead of nearly 13 seconds over defending champion, Craig Buckland for the Stock Service Revolver National Title.

Robert Vogel Wins High Overall at the 2010 Smith & Wesson Indoor Championship

West Columbia, SC --(AmmoLand.com)- Team EOTAC’s Robert Vogel won the Enhanced Service Pistol title while posting the fastest time of the match at the 2010 Smith & Wesson IDPA Indoor Nationals held February 25-27 in Springfield, Mass., at the Smith & Wesson Shooting Sports Center.

Vogel, who is a law enforcement officer in Wapakoneta, Ohio, came away with a score of 144.85. Vogel beat Team Glock’s Dave Sevigny, winner of Stock Service Pistol, by 22.32 points, making this the third year in a row Vogel has finished ahead of Sevigny for the top score of the match. Vogel also won the High Law Enforcement title.

The Smith & Wesson IPDA Indoor Nationals has become one of the most popular matches on the IDPA schedule. This year Vogel’s fellow Team EOTAC teammate Mark Redl shot the match and Team EOTAC’s Team Captain was the Range Master and Sponsor Coordinator for the match.

Mark Redl competed in the CDP division and ended the match six spots out of first to secure 5th Master with a score of 231.86.

“I am extremely proud of Bob Vogel’s performance at the Indoor Nationals. It’s not easy being a full time police officer and getting the time off to compete in our shooting sports. Vogel continues to show just how dedicated he is to our shooting sports community and how talented he is as a shooter. These type of pistols were the predecessors of the Volcanic and New Haven Arms/Winchester lever action firearms.

This particular pistol has a half-round/half-octagon barrel with front-loading integral magazine. The pistol has an iron frame and loading lever with round finger hole and attached spur.

The two-piece grips are rosewood with flat bottoms and a varnish finish. The barrel has a pinched steel front sight blade. A fixed rear sight is located on the receiver.

The sides of the receiver are decorated with simple scroll engraving and the top of the receiver is engraved with a leaf motif.

The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: “SMITH & WESSON/NORWICH CT./PATENT/CAST STEEL”. The pistol functions fine with slight timing issues.

This pistol is extremely difficult to distinguish from an original example which is almost non-existent (and worth many of tens of thousands of dollars).

Smith & Wesson M&P9 Pistol Named ‘Best in Class’ By Gun Tests Magazine

Cody, WY --(AmmoLand.com)- Teddy Roosevelt took a Winchester model 1895 lever action rifle, chambered in the .405 Winchester cartridge to Africa to hunt dangerous animals.

At the time the .405 was the most powerful American manufactured rifle cartridge. Roosevelt called his rifle “Big Medicine.”

There is now a newly designed lever action rifle being made by Big Horn Armory of Cody Wyoming (www.bighornarmory.com) that I believe could be a modern day Teddy Roosevelt’s new big medicine.

Smith and Wesson developed a handgun cartridge in 50 caliber, designated the 500 S&W Magnum. The case size is so large that even after introducing a new larger pistol frame (X-Frame) to handle the 500 S&W Magnum, the cylinder could only be chambered for 5 rounds.

Of course as soon as the new pistol cartridge was released to the public the idea of using it as a rifle cartridge was quickly born. Frank Ehrenford, the owner of Big Horn Armor and his master machinist Dan Brown have been working to bring the 500 S&W Magnum to the lever action rifle shooting community.

In his own words he wasted too much time trying to make someone else’s lever action rifle work chambered in 500 S&W Magnum. Pressure is the driving factor with the 500 S&W Magnum round and an entirely new designed lever action rifle needed to be developed.

The venerable models 1886 and 1892 were used as a basis to start from. By combining features from both rifles and enhancing the strength, Frank has come up with what he calls his Model 89 which is in between “86” and “92”.

I knew Frank back in the early 1970s, when we worked at a gun shop and indoor range. Frank always talked about “kicking harder-booming louder” when he discussed his ideas of big manly firearms. I would suggest his new Model 89 is right up there in the higher recoil and increased decimal area.

I would also suggest that Teddy Roosevelt would loved to have of had a Big Horn Armory Model 89 to take to Africa with him. I could envision that great, turn of the century hunter with his Model 89 in his hand and a Smith and Wesson 500 S&W Magnum pistol on his belt, stalking the most dangerous wildlife the African continent could offer up for his hunting adventures.

Of course the idea of having a cartridge that you could carry into the backwoods that allowed you to chamber it in either your rifle or handgun has been a desired feature since the early days of western expansion. The problem with pistol cartridges of the late 1800s being shot out of a rifle, was the lack of power that left the shooter wanting for more.

The 500 S&W Magnum does not leave you lacking or wanting in either the handgun and most assuredly in a rifle. However, other than some single shot rifles and I assume some custom bolt action rifles, there is very little out there that you can match your 500 S&W Magnum revolver up with, to take on nature’s largest and most dangerous.

Large caliber, lever action rifles were becoming very popular for hunting in the thick alder-brush of Alaska when I was stationed up there with the Air Force in the early 1990s. A fast handling lever gun could be just the trick in the thick and dangerous quarters of the Alaska bush. Now envision a lever gun in 500 S&W Magnum with a nice 450 grain gas check Keith bullet (Frank’s design and production) moving down range at 1850 plus FPS to stop that bear who is unhappy with your presence.

If you need great power and a fast handling shooting platform that is also very good looking, the Big Horn Armory Model 89 lever action rifle will fill that void in your personal shooting adventure and provide you with new big medicine.

Las Vegas, NC —-(AmmoLand.com)- Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports presented a recognition award to the Smith & Wesson Company, recognizing it’s contributions to the 2009 Ohio 4-H Summer Shooting Education Camp.

In July of 2009, 172 boys and girls from several states, participated in the 12th annual Ohio 4-H Summer Shooting Education Camp, held at the Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp in Jackson, Ohio.

Recognized nationally as one of the largest camps of its kind, the 6-day learning experience focuses on the safe, responsible and ethical use of firearms and archery equipment.

Smith & Wesson supported the camp by sending champion shooter B.J. Norris as a guest instructor working in the action pistol program. This was B.J.’s 2nd year working at the camp. He and Jerry Miculek instructed at the camp together in 2008. This program was started in 2008 with the assistance of Smith & Wesson. Smith donated several model 1911 and M&P pistols as well as model 686 revolvers.

Ohio 4-H Shooting Sports Recognizes the Smith & Wesson Company

“We couldn’t have done this without Smith & Wesson’s support and assistance. Their leadership and generous donations has taken our camp to a new level,” said Tom Johnston,Ohio’s Pistol Coordinator. “We hope to partner with them for many years to come. BJ and Jerry are truly thought of as family at our camp in southwest Ohio. The training they have provided to the children of our camp has created memories that will last a lifetime”.

The camp is held annually in July and is open to boys and girls ages 12-19. Campers are not required to be residents of Ohio and are not required to be members of 4-H. Shooting instruction is led by trained, experienced 4-H Shooting Sports Instructors. Campers specialize in the discipline of their choice such as Archery, Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, or Living History, with all having multiple levels.

The main focus of the camp is shooting safety education and youth development, but campers obtain technical instruction from some of the best firearms instructors Ohio has to offer.

BODYGUARD 380 Pistol
Compact, sleek and ergonomic, the BODYGUARD 380 delivers personal protection in an easy-to-carry platform. Chambered for .380 ACP, the lightweight pistol features a high-strength polymer frame with a black, Melonite® coated stainless steel slide and barrel. The new BODYGUARD 380 is standard with a 2 ¾-inch barrel, which contributes to an overall length of 5 ¼-inches and an unloaded weight of only 11.85 ounces.

The new pistol features a double-action fire control system, which allows for rapid second-strike capability. The BODYGUARD 380 has been further enhanced with a smooth trigger pull. Adding to its simplicity, the BODYGUARD 380 is standard with a manual thumb safety and an external take down lever and slide stop. On the lower portion of the frame, the pistol has been fitted with an integral INSIGHT laser, which is easily operated by both left and right-handed shooters. BODYGUARD 38 Revolver
Chambered in .38 S&W Special +P, the BODYGUARD 38 continues Smith & Wesson’s line of reliable small-frame self-defense revolvers. The BODYGUARD 38 delivers the optimal combination of accuracy and simplicity. With its lightweight design, the BODYGUARD 38 allows for discreet carry and its hammerless design provides a snag-free presentation. The five-shot revolver features a short 1.9-inch barrel, which contributes to a compact overall length of 6.6 inches.

Weighing in at 14.3 ounces, the BODYGUARD 38 features a one-piece aluminum alloy upper frame along with a steel reinforced polymer lower frame. The barrel and cylinder on the revolver are both stainless steel. The stainless steel cylinder is coated with a durable, non-reflective, matte black PVD finish for long term carrying and low light presentation. Designed to accommodate both left and right-handed shooters, the revolver features an easily manipulated ambidextrous cylinder release on the top of the frame. INSIGHT Laser
At the core of the new BODYGUARD line of firearms is the capability of the INSIGHT laser. Allowing for optimal accuracy, both the BODYGUARD 380 and 38 are fitted with a red laser sight produced in conjunction with Insight Technology. A world leader in the design, development and manufacture of tactical lasers, Insight Technology designed the integrated laser system to perfectly mate with the new pistol and revolver. Accurate, durable and easily adjusted, the integral laser provides shooters with added confidence by enabling quick sight acquisition under low light conditions.

The integrated laser sighting system enables faster target acquisition for shooters of all experience levels. To activate the laser, users simply operate the push-button design located on top of the laser sight for the revolver and on the sides of the forward frame for the pistol. A second push of the button enables the laser to go into pulse mode while a third press turns the laser off. SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. — -(AmmoLand.com)-  It took until the eleventh and final stage at the 2009 Area 2 USPSA Regional Handgun Championships before Dave Sevigny of Smyrna, Ga. was able to overtake Nils Jonasson of Mesa, Ariz. and repeat as the Production division champion. It is the fifth time Sevigny has won at Area 2 Production title.

Jonasson started the match strong winning the first three stages followed by a third place finish on stage four, behind Sevigny and the stage winner Gary Chan of Anaheim Hills, Calif., then again taking the stage win on the fifth stage. Halfway through the match, Jonasson, a Grand Master shooter who won the Production title in 2007, found himself in first place with a lead of more than 34 points over the defending champion.

Then on the sixth stage Sevigny, who is the captain of Team Glock and himself a Grand Master competitor, began his comeback winning that stage and the next four. Despite remaining behind Jonasson, who managed to keep the lead by finishing second on stages six, seven, eight and ten, Sevigny put himself just over five points down but in a prime position to win the match on the final stage.

On stage 11, the 50-point 10-round final stage of the match, Jonasson finished with seven A zone hits and three C zone hits for a total of 44 points shot in a time of 6.99 seconds giving him a 6.2947 hit factor and a final stage score of 39.8894. He finished the match with a final overall score of 1424.6612.

Sevigny, who is known for both his tremendous speed and accuracy, proceeded to attack the final stage posting the fastest time of any production shooter, 5.83 seconds, and scoring 46 points on eight A zone hits and two C zone hits for a hit factor of 7.8902 that won him both the stage and the match. Sevigny finished the match with a final score of 1429.3106 and a narrow 4.6494 advantage of Jonasson to take the win.

“This was classic production division battle and demonstrates how competitive this division truly is,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association. “Dave shot an excellent come-from-behind match winning not just the Area 2 Championship but his seventh Area title of the 2009 season.”

Rounding out the top five in the Production competition were three Master level shooters. Gary Chan finished third with 1268.6316 points while Kyle Schmidt of Gilbert, Ariz. took fourth shooting 1239.7421 and Jim Levis of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. finished fifth with 1196.4295 points.

The match, which was held November 12-15 at the Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club in Mesa, Ariz., drew a total of 355 shooters who put a combined 100,000-plus rounds down range competing for regional championship titles in the Open, Limited, Limited-10, Production, Revolver and Single Stack divisions.

The USPSA Area 2 region includes Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii and New Mexico but shooters from throughout the country attended.

Sevigny Overtakes Jonasson On Final Stage For Area 2 Win at USPSA Competition

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Team Smith & Wesson’s John Bagakis of Livermore, Calif. claimed the Revolver division title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Area 2 Regional Handgun Championships.

Bagakis, who is ranked a Grand Master, the highest skill level in the sport of Practical Shooting, dominated the field by winning all eleven stages for a final score of 1470. He outpaced his nearest competitor, Pat Hogue of Atascadero, Calif., by just over 302 match points. Hogue finished second in the match with a score of 1167.7836.

“John is one of the rising stars in the Revolver division as evidenced but his Area 2 win, and with the support of Smith & Wesson I think it’s safe to say John will continue to be a threat in revolver competitions,” said Dave Thomas, executive director of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association.

Rounding out the top five were Dan Furbee of Apache Junction, Ariz. in third with a score of 1099.8699, John Rodriguez of Hurley, N.M. in fourth with 1092.5206 and Team Smith & Wesson member Annette Aysen of Thibodaux, La. taking fifth shooting 1064.2603.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Smith & Wesson Corp., the legendary 157-year old firearms maker, announced today that the Washington State Patrol (WSP) has selected firearms from the company’s Military & Police (M&P) Pistol Series for duty use.

The Smith & Wesson M&P40, which is made in the United States, will be issued to each officer of the Washington State Patrol to replace firearms supplied by a European-based manufacturer that had previously served as the primary duty sidearm.

The Washington State Patrol has ordered 1,400 M&P40 pistols. The company has also recently completed shipments of 1,300 M&P pistols to be used by the Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC).

The WSP selected the M&P pistol after an extensive testing and evaluation process, which included various competitors. State Patrol evaluators indicated that the M&P pistol incorporated several key features including enhanced ergonomics and ambidextrous controls that are valuable for their officers. The evaluators added that the polymer pistol’s interchangeable grip sizes, ease of maintenance and level of support offered by Smith & Wesson were all primary factors in their recommendation that the WSP acquire the M&P pistol. In addition to the State Patrol’s high remarks on the performance of the M&P pistol during testing, officials at Washington State DOC commended Smith & Wesson for its customer service, product warranty and armorer’s training conducted by the company.

“Contracts from departments such as the Washington State Patrol and other various organizations within the Washington State DOC, demonstrate the diversity of the M&P pistol series as well as the ability of the M&P product line to meet a broad range of applications and requirements,” said Leland Nichols, Smith & Wesson’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “The recent orders from the multiple state agencies within Washington include contracts for not only the M&P40 but also for the M&P9 and M&P45 pistol. Divisions within the Washington DOC that have converted to the M&P pistol include the Correctional Facility, Women’s Correction Facility and the Washington State Penitentiary along with several other state institutions.

The M&P pistol features a Zytel® polymer frame reinforced with a rigid stainless steel chassis and a through-hardened black Melonite® finished stainless steel barrel and slide for durability; a passive trigger safety to prevent the pistol from firing if dropped; and a sear release lever that eliminates the need to press the trigger in order to disassemble the firearm. A loaded chamber indicator is located on top of the slide. The firearm also features an ambidextrous slide stop and a reversible magazine release, as well as an enlarged trigger guard designed to accommodate gloves. The M&P40 has a 15 + 1 capacity and the Smith & Wesson lifetime service policy is standard with each pistol. The M&P pistol series is available in 9mm, .40S&W, .357SIG, and .45ACP calibers. Compact versions of the M&P pistol are also available for concealed carry and back-up use.

Rounding out the top five were USPSA President and Team STI member Michael Voigt of Chino, Calif. with a score of 1319.6744 and Jarrett, a Team Para USA shooter from Hopewell, Va., in fifth with 1285.2507.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Robert Vogel of Wapakoneta, Ohio has won the Production division title for the second year in a row at the Smith & Wesson 2009 U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) National Handgun Championships.

With a final score of 1455.9116, the 27 year old Vogel was able to again hold off Team Glock member and past national champion Dave Sevigny of Smyrna Ga. by a safe margin of over 64 points. In 2008 only 4 points separated the two shooters who now dominate this division.

Rounding out the top five were Phil Strader of Owasso, Okla. in third and just over 82 points out of first. Matthew Mink of Conway, Ark., finished in fourth and over 92 points behind and Robbie Leatham of Mesa, Ariz. took fifth, 108 point off the lead.

In the Limited-10 match, Vogel nearly defeated Sevigny again but fell to second on the last stage where a no-shoot left him just 0.481 points out of first.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. —-(AmmoLand.com)- Just over 11 points separated the top three shooters in the battle for the coveted Open title at the Smith & Wesson 2009 U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s (USPSA) National Handgun Championships but it was Max Michel who took home the crown.

Heading into the final stages it was clear that, barring the wheels coming off, the title would fall to one of three shooters; Covington, Louisiana’s Michel, K.C. Eusebio of Diamond Bar, Calif. or J.J. Racaza of New Milford, N.J.

In the end it was Michel, a past USPSA national champion, who won four of the 16 stages before walking off the range and stepping into the winner’s circle.

“Max is one of the top shooters in the sport and a threat to win any match he enters,” observed Michael Voigt, USPSA president. “He faced intense competition this year from both K.C. and J.J. but was able to pull out the win; a true sign of a champion.”

Finishing second behind Michel was Team Limcat’s Eusebio shooting 1403.1500 but winning only one stage. Racaza, also a Team Limcat shooter, finished third winning seven stages and posting a final score of 1398.4525.

Rounding out the top five were Shannon Smith of Tampa, Fla. in fourth with 1358.9713 and Saul Kirsch of the Netherlands with a final score of 1277.3862 to take fifth.

The M&P357 pistols and M&P15 tactical rifles will be issued respectively as the primary duty firearms and standard issue patrol rifles.

M&P357 Polymer Pistols
The North Carolina Highway Patrol has purchased 1,840 Smith & Wesson M&P357 polymer pistols chambered in .357 SIG. The new duty sidearm will replace non-Smith & Wesson pistols that were previously issued by the department. The M&P pistol’s reliability, ambidextrous operating controls and three interchangeable palm swell grip sizes were noted by officials within the agency as key reasons for the selection of the new duty sidearm. The North Carolina Highway Patrol added that the polymer pistol’s accuracy, reliability during testing and ability to disassemble the firearm without pressing the trigger were all primary factors in their decision-making process.

Colonel Randy Glover, Commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, said, “The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is confident that the M&P357 will prove to be a reliable service weapon for our officers.”

M&P15 Tactical Rifles
The agency has also purchased 300 M&P15 tactical rifles. The semi-automatic rifles will be issued to select officers upon the completion of a certification course. While reviewing new options for patrol rifles, the North Carolina Highway Patrol compared the M&P15 against other competitive rifles. After an extensive evaluation process, the M&P15 was acknowledged for its accuracy, ability to perform in diverse field applications as well as for the training and support services offered by Smith & Wesson.

During the last fiscal year, the Smith & Wesson M&P Pistol Series and Tactical Rifle Series experienced significant growth. To date, 570 domestic law enforcement agencies have adopted or approved the M&P for duty use while 251 domestic law enforcement agencies have approved or adopted the M&P15 rifle. Currently, the company offers over five different configurations of the M&P pistol, incorporating four caliber options. The M&P Rifle Series has also continued to evolve and is today offered in 16 variants. The enhanced design and flexibility of each M&P firearm has played a crucial role in the popularity of the M&P Series, as well as its ability to adapt to a wide variety of applications and requirements.

For gun enthusiasts, one of the event’s highlights is sure to be the recent addition of a handgun demonstration by Jerry Miculek, who is very well-recognized in the shooting industry. He is widely known as the fastest shooter in the world, reportedly being able to unload a five-shot revolver in 0.57 seconds. His lightening-quick moves are sure to thrill attendees of the Shoot-Out!

The Light Foundation, which runs different programs for youth across the country, uses the sport of shooting as a teaching tool at their camps, which is why Light chose to hold this type of fundraiser. By challenging his participants to go beyond their comfort zone and exceed their normal efforts, Light hopes to instill honesty, accountability and responsibility in young people. Proceeds from this one-of-kind event benefit the youth-based organization’s unique outdoor learning experiences, including: a character development football camp, a financial literacy program offered at area schools, a leadership camp held in Ohio, and academic scholarships. In the eight years since the organization was founded, it has raised over $1.2 million to support these important programs.

The Shoot-Out, now in its fifth year, offers participants the opportunity to match their shooting skills against Light, his teammates, and a host of local and national celebrities including comedian Lenny Clarke and Olympic skier Bode Miller. And you don’t have to be a crack shot to have a great time! Instructors at the Rhode Island course will teach rookies the basics of sporting clay shooting and provide all the necessary equipment.

Light says he wanted to develop a unique high-profile charity event that would raise funds and exposure for his Foundation, and his love of the outdoors naturally came into play.

“We’re very excited going into our 5th year. The Shoot-Out has grown each season, and people really look forward to getting out on the course and having fun. There’s nothing like it out there,” he adds. “We’re lucky to have fantastic sponsors on board to help make the event special for the guests, and at the end of the day, we’ve done something even more special for these kids.”

Shooters in foursomes from all over New England, and as far away as Colorado will converge at Addieville to mingle with celebrities, enjoy lunch from the popular Qdoba Mexican Grill, and dinner by renowned steakhouse The Capital Grille. Spirits will be provided by Harpoon and Three Olives, hand-rolled cigars from New England Cigar Factory, lakeside fly fishing and shooting demonstrations by some of the sport’s top names. Singer/songwriter Ryan Montbleau will kick off the after-party with live music, and Light will get a hand from Clarke, and WAAF morning radio personality, Greg “the Hill-man” Hill, for a live auction that has to be experienced.

“Lenny runs an auction like no one else,” says Light. “He’ll sell just about anything for the Foundation, and he takes no prisoners!”

Last year’s Celebrity Shoot-Out brought many of Light’s friends and teammates together to support the cause. Dan Connolly, Stephen Gostkowski, Chris Hanson, Ellis Hobbs, Russ Hochstein, Larry Izzo, Nick Kaczur, Dan Koppen, Logan Mankins, Lonnie Paxton, Stephen Spach, Mike Vrabel and Wes Welker all took part in the festivities, in addition to Patriots alumni Peter Brock and Pro Football Hall-of -Famer Andre Tippett. This year, Light expects the star-studded guest list to be just as long.

So is this a guys-only event? No way, says Light. “Many women are amazing shooters, and in fact, last year, the top shooter was Patti Mastroianni.” Many of the 200-plus shooters who register for this event have never held a shotgun beforehand; they arrive early at Addieville for safety lessons and some training time.

Addieville East Farm, founded in 1980, is located on 400 private acres in Mapleville, Rhode Island, and offers clay shooting, archery, dog training, and fishing. It’s also New England’s premiere pheasant hunting preserve. This year, manager Jack O’Brien will design two 15-station courses with challenging, high-flying clay targets specifically for this event

Since the first tournament in 2004, the Matt Light Celebrity Shoot-Out has raised over $300,000 for The Light Foundation’s efforts on behalf of youth, and Light expects that number will continue to grow.

Offering the fit and feel of the company’s popular Military & Police (M&P) Rifle Series, the M&P15-22 is a dedicated .22 LR platform manufactured with a high strength polymer upper and lower receiver, offering reduced weight while being chambered in the more economical ammunition.

The M&P15-22 features a 16-inch barrel with a twist of 1 in 15 inches. The semi-automatic rifle is standard with a six-position collapsible stock to accommodate a variety of shooters and shooting positions, an A3 style flat top upper receiver with a quad-rail handguard for easily mounting optional accessories and an A2 pistol grip for improved firearm control.

The M&P15-22 also features a fully functional charging handle, an AR-15 style magazine release, bolt catch and a two-position receiver mounted safety. The M&P15-22 is complete with a removable 25 round magazine along with a removable A2-style front post sight, an adjustable A2-style rear sight and a single stage trigger. An optional barrel shroud will be available later this fall.

By remaining true to the standard AR-15 design while offering all of the preferred features found on the M&P Rifle Series, the M&P15-22 is well suited for a variety of recreational shooting applications while also serving as an extremely viable training firearm for law enforcement and military personnel.

The M&P15-22 has an unloaded weight of approximately 5 pounds. The rifle measures a compact 31 inches with the stock collapsed and 34 inches with the stock fully extended. PIRU, Calif. —-(AmmoLand.com)- For the second year in a row Team Smith & Wesson’s BJ Norris walked off with the Steel Master crown at the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships held August 13-15 in Piru, Calif.

The Steel Master title goes to the shooter who posts the fastest combined time from two main matches and the rimfire match. Norris won with a combined time of 246.25 seconds winning the Open Rimfire Pistol title, finishing second in the Limited Pistol match and taking second in the Open Pistol event.

Norris’ 246.25 comfortably outpaced Steel Master runner up and Team Glock captain Dave Sevigny of Smyrna, Ga. by 8.93 seconds. Para USA shooter Todd Jarrett of Hopewell, Va. finished third, 16.15 second back of Norris.

The husband and wife team of Billy and Jessie Abbate of McDonough, Ga. came in fourth and fifth respectively. Billy ended up 25.02 seconds behind Norris while Jessie, a Team Glock shooter and the 2009 Ladies Steel Master, finished 31.43 out of first.

“The battle for Steel Master is always fierce and the pressure shooters face can be daunting. It’s difficult enough to win the title once but to repeat took tremendous skill and determination on BJ’s part,” said Michael Voigt of the Steel Challenge Shooting Association.

The Steel Master title is one of the hardest titles to claim at the Steel Challenge because it requires the winner to shoot at a very high level across three days of competition facing the best shooters in the world. Only 26 competitors entered the Steel Master race this year with all four runners up adding to the pressure by competing head to head with Norris in the Open Rimfire Pistol, Limited Pistol and Open Pistol divisions.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --(AmmoLand.com)- Smith & Wesson Corp., the legendary 157-year old firearms maker, announced today that the Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) has equipped its entire officer force with primary duty side arms from Smith & Wesson’s Military & Police (M&P) Series of advanced-design polymer pistols. The Smith & Wesson M&P40, chambered in .40 S&W, will be issued to each officer of the Maryland NRP to replace currently issued non-Smith & Wesson firearms supplied by a European-based manufacturer.

Officials at the Maryland NRP indicated that the M&P pistol incorporates several key features that are valuable for their officers, including enhanced ergonomics and ambidextrous controls. The department added that the polymer pistol’s interchangeable grip sizes and ease of maintenance, as well as the officers’ ability to disassemble the firearm without pressing the trigger were all key factors in their decision-making process.

Other full-conversion in-state police departments and agencies that have selected the M&P pistol for use in Maryland include the Charles County Police Department, the Gaithersburg Police Department, Howard County Probation, Queen Anne’s County Police Department, Seat Pleasant Police Department, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and the Greenbelt Police Department. The contract with Maryland DNR represents the first Maryland state agency that has converted to the M&P Series of pistols.

A loaded chamber indicator is located on top of the slide. The firearm also features an ambidextrous slide stop and a reversible magazine release, as well as an enlarged trigger guard designed to accommodate gloves. The M&P40 has a 15 + 1 capacity and the Smith & Wesson lifetime service policy is standard with each pistol. The M&P pistol series is available in 9mm, .40S&W, .357SIG, and .45ACP calibers. Held at the United States Shooting Academy in Tulsa, OK, the USSA Pro Am is designed to test all aspects of practical shooting. Competing with a Smith & Wesson M&P Pro Series 9mm pistol, Golob placed 2nd in both the Open and Limited Divisions. An all steel target event, the Pro Am featured eight diverse stages of fire with par times set for each stage and the total number of steel targets down representing each competitor’s final score. Fresh off her victory as the Open Ladies Title winner at the International Revolver Championship (IRC) just days before, Golob maintained her competitive prowess using her stock M&P9 Pro Series in both divisions in the match, placing 2nd in each.

“This was my first Pro Am and it was a lot of fun,” said Golob. “Instead of shooting for time and points like many other action shooting events, competitors literally raced against the clock to knock down as many steel targets as possible. It was also my first match with an M&P9 Pro Series. Coming right off the IRC where I used my Model 627 to the Pro Am with the M&P, I definitely had to shift gears. I am very pleased with my performance at a new event with a new firearm and I look forward to coming back next year.”

In her first major tournament as a member of Team Smith & Wesson, Carrie Jamrogowicz took home the High Lady award at the USPSA Area 1 Championships in Parma, Idaho. Competing with a Smith & Wesson M&P Pro Series 9mm pistol, Jamrogowicz outscored six other female competitors en route to her prestigious title.

“The USPSA Idaho Selection did a fantastic job of putting this match together,” said Jamrogowicz. “I am extremely pleased with my performance at my first major match representing Smith & Wesson and it has given me great confidence for my upcoming matches.”

Also debuting for Team Smith & Wesson this year was Laura Torres-Reyes, who earned titles in both USPSA and IDPA competitions. Demonstrating her versatility in the different shooting sports, Torres-Reyes took home the High Lady award at the Texas Multi-Club IDPA Regional held in San Antonio, Texas, besting a field of six women. She followed the victory with another win in the Production Division at the USPSA Virginia/Maryland Sectional match in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Torres-Reyes expertly used the M&P9 Pro Series pistol to secure her championship titles.

Team Smith & Wesson Women Deliver Positive Results During Summer Matches

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Smith & Wesson Corp., announced today that Team Smith & Wesson has extended its current winning streak of practical shooting competitions, earning numerous division titles in state and regional competitions over the last three months.

Most recently, during the first ever ICORE (International Confederation of Revolver Enthusiasts) New England Regional Revolver Championship, Team Smith & Wesson members David Olhasso and Craig Buckland delivered strong performances in the Open and Limited Divisions. Olhasso, competing with a Smith & Wesson Performance Center Model 627, posted top scores in five of the eight courses of fire earning him the overall title. Fellow teammate Craig Buckland followed suit placing second in the Limited Division and third overall in the championship match with a Smith & Wesson Performance Center Model 686 Plus.

In June, Team Smith & Wesson members competed in several challenging matches and achieved numerous championship titles in ICORE, IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association and USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) matches. As one of the premier matches in the nation, the IDPA Carolina Cup has historically been noted for its diverse and challenging courses of fire. Showcasing a variety of targets designed to test competitors of all skill levels, the Carolina Cup is intended to evaluate competitors both mentally and physically.

This year, Team Smith & Wesson earned division titles in both of the revolver divisions and in the Stock Service Pistol (SSP) Division. Curt Nichols captured the Enhanced Service Revolver (ESR) division with his Smith & Wesson Model 625, while Craig Buckland secured the division title in the Stock Service Revolver (SSR) Division using a Smith & Wesson Model 67. Joining Team Smith & Wesson members in the winner’s circle was Gordon Carrell, who bested the talented field in the SSP Division with his M&P Pro Series pistol in 9mm.

In other competitions, Team S&W member Jeff Degracia won High Overall and the Enhanced Service Pistol (ESP) Division at the 2009 Sunshine State Games IDPA Championships in Orlando, Florida, with his M&P9 Pro Series pistol. Gordon Carrell once again returned to the winner’s circle placing 1st place in Master class in the SSP Division at the 2009 IDPA Nevada State Championship held in Las Vegas. Team member Tony Phan, representing the Webster Police Department, earned top honors at the Texas Police Games and was named the Overall Champion in both Double and Single Stack Divisions.

Rounding out other summer victories was David Olhasso who dominated the SSP Division during the Pennsylvania State IDPA Championship using an M&P9L pistol. Olhasso’s proficiency with the M&P9L allowed him to place the fastest overall score in the match with a total time of 141.62 seconds. Olhasso also earned division titles at the Smith & Wesson Steel Shoot Northeast Regional held in Old Bridge, New Jersey, in both Iron Sight and Optical Revolver Divisions using a Smith & Wesson Model 627 and a Model TR8. At the Topton Multi-Gun Championships in Topton, Pennsylvania, Olhasso earned yet another title and was named Tactical Champion.

GunReports.com – -(AmmoLand.com)- The SW1911 operates with two functional variations on traditional 1911 design. The first variation is an externally mounted extractor. John Browning himself saw the extractor as the one weak point in the 1911 system and developed the external design to enhance reliability and maintenance. The second difference is in the control of the firing pin via the grip safety. Depress the grip safety and the firing pin is free to move forward. This is very similar to the Schwartz system that was adapted for use in the Kimber Type II pistols, but Smith & Wesson has claimed new patents on its variation.

Elsewhere, another difference between Smith & Wesson and many other firearms companies is that Smith & Wesson is a manufacturer and not merely an importer of complete pistols or of parts that they assemble in stateside factories. Industry buzz says that in fact, Smith & Wesson has been manufacturing frames and slides for other companies that produce 1911 pistols.

Now it is Smith & Wesson’s turn. We received our 1911 just weeks before its official introduction at the 2003 Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show. This new pistol was finished in handsome satin stainless with distinctive gold graphics. Cocking serrations were cut on the front and back of the slide. Novak low-mount three-dot sights were dovetailed into place. Lockup was via a bushing with a full-length guide rod. The grips were a tasteful black rubber. The mainspring housing was also black and cleanly checkered. Other black accents were the beavertail grip safety, the slide release, left-side-only thumb safety and checkered magazine-release button. The hammer is skeletonized with the sides polished, but the interior of its sculpture and the outer surface continues the theme of using a black contrast. Two eight-round magazines were supplied. We measured the single-action trigger to break at exactly 4 pounds.

When we fired this gun over five different range sessions, we were impressed when it delivered five-shot groups of 3.0 inches and under with virtually every scrap of ammunition we could find in our closet. Most groups were in the 2.7-inch range. If the SW1911 is not a top-grade target pistol, then it is among the most consistent shooting pistols we have seen come off an assembly line in some time. This is not an inexpensive pistol nor is it out of the ballpark, either. It is our impression that the design intent of this pistol was for its designers to hear someone someday refer to the SW 1911 pistol as “old reliable.” We had no failures to feed, extraction issues, or any other problem.

Smith & Wesson Completes Acquisition of Universal Safety Response

Old Bridge, New Jersey - -(AmmoLand.com)- World Class shooter “JJ” Racaza, sponsored by both Limcat Custom and Montana Gold Bullets, captured the top awards in both the Open Division and the Iron Sight Division in the 2009 Smith & Wesson Steel Series Northeast Championship held on June 5th, 6th and 7th at the Old Bridge Rifle and Pistol Club’s outdoor facilities, located in Old Bridge, New Jersey. Racaza’s combined score of 71.10 seconds for the entire event included a score of 7.93 seconds on the “Roundabout” stage, sponsored by FNH USA, and thus broke the standing World Record of 8.35 seconds for this stage.

Almost as amazing was his time of 10.08 to tie the World record on “Showdown.” All of these exceptional times were recorded using timers supplied by CED, the official timers of World Class Steel.

This year’s championship, also known by its long-standing original name of “Speed on Steel,” consisted of seven static steel stages. The stage names, with sponsoring firms, were Roundabout, FNH USA; Zig-Zag, Glock; Smoke and Hope, Beretta USA; Five-to-Go, Safariland; Showdown, Springfield, Inc; Speed Option, ACDelco/Sport Shooters Training; and Accelerator, Smith & Wesson.

The Championship sponsor was Smith & Wesson, with Beretta USA, STI International and Mike Gibson being the match sponsors for the weekend event. Schuemann Barrels, a returning sponsor, provided luncheon for the shooters and match staff.

On Saturday morning, the second session day of the match, I had a chance to talk to JJ as he was signing in at the Registration Desk, sponsored by Caspian, Inc, and told him that we were glad to see him able to shoot the match considering his very hectic work schedule. JJ stated that, “I didn’t know until a few days ago if I could make the match and I wasn’t able to get in as much range time as I would have liked but I feel really good today.” And what a day he had! At the end of the day he and his squad even had time to take in a few of the side matches that were sponsored by Mike Gibson Manufacturing and by Otis Technologies, Inc. His squad, a squad consisting of a group of law enforcement officers who regularly compete at World Class Steel events, had become a cheering section for JJ throughout the day.

Equaling Racaza’s feat of taking both division titles was Team Smith & Wesson member Dave Olhasso, making it to the top spot in both Open Revolver and Iron Sight Revolver. Dave’s showing in Revolver was truly amazing in that he has been competing with a revolver only for the last few seasons.

The Statistics Trailer, again sponsored by Starline Brass, was busy every afternoon scoring the match using The World Class Steel Scorer program. Top placers in the remaining divisions were Chuck Guzenski in Compact, Myron Pollard in Rimfire Iron Pistol and Rich LaBrocca in Open Rimfire.

Thanks to the continued support of many generous and caring commercial organizations in the shooting-sports industry, we were able to exceed the dollar value of last year’s prize table. This year’s event included 20 firearms among the more than $35,000 in prize merchandise awarded in the shooters random drawing raffle. In excess of $4,000 in cash prizes were awarded to division winners based on their order of finish using the Lewis System.

Old Bridge, New Jersey - -(AmmoLand.com)- On June 8th and 9th the World Class Steel shooting organization conducted the 1st annual East Coast Pro Am Championship. The championship was held at the outdoor range facilities of the Old Bridge Rifle and Pistol Club, located in Old Bridge, New Jersey. More than 160 competitors took on more than 240 steel knockdown targets spread among seven stages while vying for the top positions in each of four divisions.

Congratulations go out to the top place finishers in each of these divisions. Taking first in the Open Pistol Division was James McGinty, sponsored by both STI International, of Georgetown Texas, and Shuemann barrel. James is a Junior shooter well on his way to being one of the top shooters in the country. Taking second was Smith & Wesson Team member Dave Olhasso. Third place was awarded to Mike DiGennaro. Mike performed a great showing at his first major match since returning to competitive shooting after taking a ten-year hiatus. With his “among-the-top” showing here, Mike proved that he still has the potential to be at the top of his sport in the 2009 season. Mike has started a great shooting school, Sport Shooters Training and a tremendous shooter-oriented website, www.hoserhaven.webs.com. Great to see you back Mike and we at World Class Steel wish you continued success in all of your endeavors.

The Iron Pistol Division top spot was taken By Dave Olhasso, followed by James McGinty in second place with Dave Marques, just four points behind McGinty, taking the third position in the Division.

The Open Carbine Division saw George Meschi leading the pack and taking home the top slot.

Iron Carbine saw newcomer Danny Lisk, in only his second year of competitive shooting, take the first place award shooting a Hi Point carbine – nice shooting Danny!

The Pro Am event was patterned after the Pro Am Matches that Phil Strader organized at the USSA complex located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Pro Am is a mix of action pistol and knockdown steel that is shot using a predetermined par-time. Stages were designed and props set in each of six ranges allowing shooters to engage as many as 45 targets from different shooting positions. Firearms were allowed to have 11 rounds in the gun to start but no more than 10 rounds in any subsequent magazine. A tie- breaker stage of typical knockdown format was set up in one range. This stage saw shooters standing behind a table with firearm loaded and touching the table; on signal the shooter commenced firing until all targets were knocked down. Score for this stage was the amount of time it took to knock down all targets. This stage was indeed needed in a few close instances during the match to determine the correct order of finish. We would like to thank Phil for his direction and input into the match and also for allowing us to bring and run such a great shooting event to the East Coast in 2009.

We at World Class Steel would also like to thank the many volunteers who helped with the setup of the many stages and who performed as range Officers throughout the event. And, of course, our thanks to the many competitors who traveled from both near and far to participate in the 2009 Pro Am Championship. Needless to say, without the volunteers and the competitors the championship would not have been possible. Also, those who participated in the 2009 Pro Am will benefit by having their 2010 entry fee frozen at the low $45 2009 rate.
