He said timing was everything.

“I just got lucky,” he said. “I’ve shot 100 straight before. This really isn’t as abnormal as you think, but these aren’t the greatest conditions, either. You’ve got to shoot quicker.”

Jacqueline Baude of Papillion-LaVista South won the girls’ individual title, but she and fellow seniors Melissa Harnack, Taylor Holzer, Marisa Braddock won their fourth straight girls’ team title.

Baude said her 96X100 in the 16s was a byproduct of teamwork. “We’ve always had a mentality of team first,” she said. “We just keep plugging along.”

It’s a good thing. The Lady Titans No. 1 team that also included freshman Bailey Kustka needed to plug along. “We didn’t get off to the best start but closed out really well,” Baude said. “We missed the first two or three birds out, then started to get used to the wind. We did a lot better in the second 50 (rocks) than the first 50.”

The team finished with a 432X500.

The Cornhusker Trapshoot, held at the Nebraska Trapshooting Association (NTA) home grounds, concluded this past Saturday with senior high handicap competition and the presentation of the Cornhusker Cup to the overall winner.

There are 1,216 shooters competing in the senior high division.

The Cornhusker Trapshoot is hosted by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the NTA.
Ammoland.com)- Cory Sorahan of Grand Island had a painful introduction to shooting sports. On the other hand, she was just a fourth-grader and the shotgun she shot packed a wallop.

From that experience at Walnut Junior High’s outdoor field day, Sorahan took to shooting sports, despite her first impression. “I was done; it hurt so badly,” she said of her first experience. “But I knew it wouldn’t be like that all the time.”

“She told me she wanted to shoot those orange things,” said her aunt, Michelle Sorahan, with whom Cory lives. “I said ‘You mean blue rocks?’ She said, ‘No, they are orange.’ “

Now the 15-year-old sophomore is a veteran in her fifth season competing at the 42nd Cornhusker Trapshoot. On Friday she shot an 87X100 at 16-yard targets during competition in the senior high division.

Her squad on Friday included four boys. She is used to competing with boys.

“She irritates the boys,” said Jack Wiese, a Ducks Unlimited member from Grand Island and the person who taught Sorahan how to shoot.

Wiese taught Sorahan how to shoot with the discipline he learned as a decorated member of the U.S. Marine Corps. “She has natural talent,” he said. “She doesn’t have any bad habits. She just doesn’t miss.”

Sorahan didn’t miss much last year when she finished second in the 20-21 yard individual handicap division at the Cornhusker Trapshoot.

On that night back in the fourth grade, Sorahan won in a drawing a membership into the Ducks Unlimited Green Wings program for youth shooters. That’s when Wiese took her under his wing.

Sorahan didn’t care that there were few girls her age shooting. “It’s something a lot of girls didn’t do at the time, so it was something, like the boys, I could do,” she said.

“It’s not about winning; it’s about shooting against people and making them think they have to be better than you.”

Sorahan has a lifetime of trapshooting to look forward to now.

“That’s another reason that I like to shoot trap,” she said. “You can’t play basketball your whole life, but you can shoot your whole life.”

And at least two more Cornhusker Trapshoots.

“Boys and girls of all ages are taking up shooting sports as a hobby,” Shoot Director Terry Brentzel said. “It is getting easier to do that, too, because there are so many opportunities available to get started. There are hunter education courses, live-fire programs, school programs, and mentored hunts available, as well as a number of excellent shooting ranges.”

Contact the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for more information on learning how to shoot.
Tags: Ammoland.com)- Shooting sports continue to grow in Nebraska. There is no better evidence than the Cornhusker Trapshoot, where a record of more than 1,900 shooters is expected for the April 28-30 event.
NGPC

The 42nd annual trapshoot will be held on the home grounds of the Nebraska Trapshooting Association (NTA) in Doniphan, 3 miles south of Interstate 80 exit 312 on U.S. Highway 281. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the NTA are hosts.

Junior and senior high school trapshooters from Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, and South Dakota are expected to be among the competitors, with the overall champion winning the Cornhusker Cup. Zach Bryant of Lincoln Southwest High School shot a 196×200 to win the Cornhusker Cup in 2010, when a record 1,811 shooters participated.

Competition will take place in team and individual divisions. Junior high students will shoot on April 28 and high school students the following two days.

The Cornhusker Trapshoot began in 1970 with only two squads. The shoot now attracts more than 300 squads each year.

“It is like a prairie fire on the plains,” Shoot Director Terry Brentzel said of the increasing popularity of shooting sports in Nebraska. “It’s catching on so much, we have kids from the Missouri River to Scottsbluff competing. Creighton Prep has close to 100 kids shooting. Grand Island Northwest didn’t even have a team a few years ago and now had 75 kids.”

Safety is always the No. 1 concern. All competitors must be certified in hunter education. There are plenty of volunteers on hand to make sure the event runs smoothly and safely.

“Sport shooting is one of the safest sports available to children,” said Brentzel, a Game and Parks conservation officer from Doniphan. “It also is a sport that doesn’t favor one gender. Like boys, girls can be excellent shooters.”

Tags: USA Shooting

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. --(AmmoLand.com)- Just one week after the conclusion of USA Shooting’s National Shotgun Championships, juniors across the country have traveled or extended their stay in Colorado Springs to compete in the National Junior Olympic Shotgun Championships (NJOSC).

The competition was fierce in the trap events. In Women’s Trap, Rachael Heiden, who recently won the USAS National Championship title for Women’s Open Trap, conquered the NJOSC event as well.

Heiden walked into the final with a four target lead (113 birds) and shot a solid 23-target final. She finished with a big smile five targets above the competition.

The silver medalist was Kayle Browning at 131 total targets. Browning and bronze medalist Stephanie Martinago both entered the final with 109 targets, but Browning broke ahead as Martinago shot a 19 target final. In the J2 Category, leader Ashley Carroll finished sixth overall, yet won her division with 109 targets for J2 and a total of 122 targets with her final. She was followed by Brianne Radulovich at 104 targets and Erin Danhausen at 95 targets.

The Men’s Champion was Garrett Walters, who shot for 142 targets despite high winds and an impending thunderstorm. Walters nailed 24 straight, but missed the last target to fall one shy of a perfect round. Walters shot up from a second place tie to win the competition as silver medalist Jacob Gogno, who entered the final round with 121 targets, shot a 20-target final. The bronze medalist was Jake Wallace with 137 total targets. Wallace was tied with Walters at 118 targets going into the final, but couldn’t maintain the pace for gold. Your high J2 winner was David Radulovich with 116 targets.

He was followed by Dakotah Richardson, also at 116 targets. Radulovich narrowly beat out Richardson by one target in the second match to claim the top J2 title. The bronze medalist was TJ Bayer, a member of the World Championship Junior Shotgun Team, with 114 targets. Finally, the gold medalist of the J3 category was Nick Scholz at 105 targets. He was followed by silver medalist Will Dunnebacke (100 targets) and Tyler Lirio (100 targets).

In Men’s Double Trap, Ian Rupert smoked the competition today at the National Junior Olympic Championships (NJOSC) in the Men’s Double Trap final. Rupert finished with 175 targets–exactly four targets above silver medalist Garrett Walters. Rupert, a J2 competitor, is also a member of the World Shooting Championships Junior Shotgun Team. Walters, the gold medalist of the NJOSC Men’s Trap event, finished at 171 targets. The bronze medalist, David Radulovich, shot a strong 44 target final to finish at 170 targets. The high J2 for this event was Christian Wilkoski at 110 targets. The silver medalist in the J2 category was Tyler Auger with 102 targets. Auger squeezed one target ahead of bronze medalist Justin Brooks. In the J3 category, the gold medalist was Haden Green, who shot for 86 targets. He was followed by Connor Rinker (83 targets) and Lewis Thaggard (80 targets). USA Shooting was pleased with the strong Double Trap turnout–a good sign for the upcoming talent in the sport.

Men’s Skeet was a thrilling event- laden with shoot-offs and suspense. The gold medalist, Jon Michael McGrath, shot up from fourth place with a perfect 25 X 25 in the final round. McGrath gained a two target lead over the rest of the competition, finishing with 145 total targets, missing just five targets overall. Phillip Jungman, William Brazell, and Thomas Coggins were all tied at 143 targets after the final.

A shoot-off between the three quickly eliminated Coggins as he missed one bird; Jungman and Brazell turned up the heat as Brazell aimed and broke two, and Jungman echoed. When Brazell missed one target, Jungman held the crowd in suspense as he calmly fired on his last bird of the pair. A clean break assured the silver medal for Jungman, and Brazell became the bronze medalist. The high shooter of the J2 category was Granger DeWitt at 121 targets. DeWitt also finished sixth in the open division after losing a shoot-off to TJ Bayer. The J2 silver medalist was TJ Bayer at 118 targets (his open final does not count toward category awards). Luis Gloria was the bronze medalist at 118 targets. Coulter DeWitt was the high J3 winner. DeWitt was leaps and bounds above the competition at 108 targets. The silver medalist was Will Dunnebacke at 99 targets. Also scoring 99 targets was the bronze medalist Cole Britt.

Women’s Skeet was a battle between Resident Athletes Caitlin Connor and Jaiden Grinnell. Grinnell was leading by two targets after the first day of competition, but lost her stride as she shot a 42/50 in day two. Connor’s strong performance left her with a five target lead heading into the final, which she maintained throughout with a strong 25 target final. Connor, the gold medalist, finished at 144 targets and Grinnell, the silver medalist, scored 139 targets. The bronze medalist was Morgan Craft at 136 targets. The high J2 shotgunner was Brandy Drozd at 106 targets. Drozd also finished fourth in the open division. The silver medalist, and new to the podium, was Riley Moody at 97 targets. In third was Brianne Radulovich at 96 targets.

<div

The new audio book is narrated by two time Country Music Award (CMA) winner, Tim Fox. The new audio book is approximately five hours and 10 minutes long all included on five compact discs. If you have ever wished to enjoy a great book on your road trip to your next outdoor adventure or while completing everyday tasks, the new audio book from Gil and Vicki is the audio book for you.

OSP Shooting School's You Gotta Be Out of Your Mind Audio Book

This audio book is dedicated to the ever-growing list of students and friends, like Steve Brown, who have trusted Gil and Vicki Ash with their skills to rise above the average shooter. You Gotta Be Out of Your Mind will prove to be helpful for all shotgunners in sporting clays as well as improve their personal lives. There are many audio books that deal with mental performance in other sports, but Gil and Vicki’s delivers the first of its kind when it comes to information that is specific to sporting clays.

In 30 years combined teaching experience, Gil and Vicki have studied “the zone” in depth, and more importantly, have studied what it takes to produce a zone experience. This is where the mental game becomes extremely important. Gil and Vicki have developed a system that is not a one size fits all, but empowers each shooter to tailor the concepts to their own individual level, allowing them to self-coach with more effectiveness.

With chapters like “The Log,” “Before You Can Feel,” and “After the Fat Lady Sings,” each listener will find something they can improve in their game mentally and will be able to witness results instead of plateauing.

Gil and Vicki Ash have been shooting sporting clays since 1982. Unlike other instructors, they are natural teachers who have studied and practiced not only shooting, but the psychology of learning and performance, and they have developed the most effective teaching approach in the industry. OSP’s common sense teaching method helps students understand how their eyes, mind and body function together. Once this is learned, understanding why they succeed or fail when shooting a shotgun becomes simple! The powerful insight from Gil and Vicki can be applied to all aspects of your personal life and business, making you not only a better shooter, but a better performer at everything you do.

For more information regarding OSP Shooting School please visit www.ospschool.com or by calling 800.838.7533.
Tags: SSSF

Sparta, Illinois – -(AmmoLand.com)- Youth shooting teams from 24 states captured medals and nationals honors at the 2009 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) National Championships held at the World Shooting and Recreation Complex in Sparta, Illinois on July 23 – 26, 2009. With the support of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) and other major sponsors including Beretta, Browning, Remington and White Flyer, over 1,500 shooters competed in trap, skeet and sporting clays events throughout the weekend.

“We are happy to report that the 2009 SCTP National Championships had the atmosphere and excitement of an Olympic competition and was without a doubt the most successful youth shooting championships held to date. The quality of shooting, added to the quality of the character and perseverance of the shooters at all levels, leaves little doubt that the SCTP is a program that will continue to grow in the years to come,” says Dr. Bill Christy, Executive Director of SSSF, “and we could not have done it without our sponsors, parents, coaches and volunteers that helped organize the National Championships.” Added Christy, “of course all of these combined with a first class shooting complex allowed for the most exciting SCTP Championship ever.”

Browning Day kicked-off the weekend’s festivities which included the Opening Ceremony, an exhibition shoot by Winchester’s Patrick Flanagan and the awarding of the Sporting Clays National Awards. The day’s events also included the Ruger Rimfire Challenge and the Kaskaskia Single Action competitions. These events continued throughout the weekend.

Saturday was slated as Beretta Day which began the trap and skeet competitions, along with the annual Beretta cookout and concluded with a shooting exhibition by Beretta’s shooter Scott Robertson and the Last Competitor Standing competition. Over 225 shooters competed in this hour long event which was won by Travis Wagner of Virginia with Jon Ebbers of Wisconsin as the runner-up.

The National Championships concluded on Sunday with Remington Day and included the final competitions in trap and skeet, along with the closing ceremonies and the award presentations in trap, skeet and high all-around. Award presenters included representatives from Winchester, Remington, White Flyer and Olympic Gold Medal winner Kim Rhode.

The ultimate goal of SCTP is to instill in young participants a commitment to safe firearm handling, teamwork and leadership. This was certainly evident throughout the entire weekend with each and every participant.

In terms of sheer numbers of participants, the eight-year-old SCTP is one of the most successful youth-oriented program ever established. Nearly 30,000 middle and high school students have participated in the program, which includes trap, skeet, sporting clays, Olympic Trap, and ISSF Skeet competitions.

About:
SSSF

Shelby Township, Michigan - -(AmmoLand.com)- The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) recently became the official administrator of the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP). The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) officially turned over the program to the new formed foundation on January 1, 2009.

In terms of sheer numbers of participants, the eight-year-old SCTP has been the most successful youth-oriented program in NSSF history. Nearly 30,000 middle and high school students have participated in the program, which includes trap, skeet, sporting clays, Olympic Trap, and ISSF Skeet competitions.

“We are confident that this transfer of responsibility to the SSSF will be in the best interest of the program to serve its youth participants and coaches,” commented NSSF President Steve Sanetti. “The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation has the talent and experience to assure the continued success of this vitally important program. NSSF is proud to now be included as one of many sponsors of SCTP.”

The new foundation will be responsible for all aspects of SCTP, including participant registration, coaches, state coordinators, state and national championships, promotion, communications, Web sites, public relations and growth strategies.

SSSF is headed by Dr. Bill Christy, who has extensive experience in the organized youth shooting sports arena. His involvement in youth shooting sports programs dates back to the mid-sixties while serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was one of the founders of the groundbreaking 4-H Shooting Program. Since then, as a training and development consultant, he developed programs for state and national agencies and organizations including the state wildlife agencies, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, L.L. Bean, and Orvis, among others. He has taught hundreds of firearms instructors, coached a collegiate team for 20 years, and was the NSSF consultant who developed the SCTP.

“SSSF’s objective,” said Christy “is to build on the foundation of NSSF’s success with SCTP. We will focus on providing a safe and enjoyable experience for developing young people into responsible citizens through the discipline and culture of the shooting sports. With the help of our many dedicated volunteers, we hope to create a new dimension of youth involvement in SCTP that will forever live as the NSSF’s legacy.”

As part of that new dimension, the SSSF has been accepted as a national partner with the Positive Coaching Alliance at Stanford University. Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) has the mission of “transforming youth sports so sports can transform youth.” The Double-Goal Coach Course adopted by the SSSF is a product of the PCA.

With the beginning of this newly formed organization, the NSSF becomes the first major contributor to the Foundation. In addition, NSSF President Steve Sanetti, has accepted a Board of Director’s position with the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation. Additional board members will be announced in the coming months along with news of other major contributors.

Industry members have been quick to respond positively with pledges of support for the SCTP. The 2009 SCTP National Championships will be the beneficiary of this renewed support. The focus for this year is to make the SCTP Nationals more than just a shoot, it will be an EVENT. The National Championships will be held at the World Shooting and Recreation Complex, in Sparta, Illinois on July 23 – 26, 2009.

To learn more about SSSF and SCTP visit the newly launched website at www.sssfonline.org.

About:<br

Shooters from across Nebraska and neighboring states registered for the Cornhusker, which is the largest trapshoot event of its kind in the world, according to Rocky Hoffmann of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the Cornhusker Trapshoot director.

“Trapshooting has a very strong following across Nebraska and most of the United States,” Hoffmann said. “The first Cornhusker, which began in 1970 with only two squads, has grown to nearly 375 squads this year. Thanks to generous contributors, coaches, and the young trapshooters and their families, the Cornhusker Trapshoot is a great event.”

According to Hoffmann, sport shooting is one of the safest sports available to youngsters and is a sport in which every student can participate regardless of the individual’s size or sex. All Cornhusker entrants must have successfully completed the Nebraska Hunter Education Course.

“It is extremely gratifying to observe first-hand the responsibility that these students demonstrate in the use of firearms and the genuine sportsmanship displayed during the three days of trapshooting,” Hoffmann said.

The 2009 Cornhusker’s junior high program consists of 100, 16-yard targets shot on Thursday, with more than 600 junior high trapshooters participating. The high school competition features 100, 16-yard targets on Friday and 100 handicap targets on Saturday.
