class="wp-caption-text">Pennsylvania Game Commission

HARRISBURG, PA --(Ammoland.com)- The fifth and final year of the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s two time-limited collectible series – the Wild Turkey Heritage Series and the Upland Game Bird Series – now are available for ordering. Limited to the first 1,000 orders, which will be delivered between October and December, those interested should place orders through the agency’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), or by calling 1-888-888-3459 (toll-free).

In addition to ordering online, a downloadable application is available on the agency’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) by clicking on “General Store” in the menu bar under the banner, then click on “Collectible Series and Items.” The mailing address is listed on the application.

The two, five-year series, which were launched in 2007, incorporate products grown and made in Pennsylvania, as well as the designs of an award-winning Pennsylvania wildlife artist.

“The individually numbered wild turkey calls and knives are handsome additions to any collection,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “Both series, which also offer corresponding fine-art prints and patches, feature products made in Pennsylvania by Pennsylvanians.

“It’s also important to remember that all purchases from these collectible lines will support wildlife conservation in Pennsylvania and help preserve our hunting heritage.”

The “Wild Turkey Heritage Series” featured five collectible box-style turkey calls, made in Pennsylvania by Top Calls in Renovo, Clinton County, and are priced at $49.95 (plus tax and shipping). Each year, the calls have been made from a different Pennsylvania-grown wood. The final year will feature a combination of walnut, maple and sycamore. The first four calls of this series were cedar, walnut, cherry and sassafras. Each call comes in a green velvet bag and features a different wild turkey scene.

The “Upland Game Bird Series” featured five collectible mini-trapper knives made by W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Co., of Bradford, McKean County, and are priced at $74.95 (plus tax and shipping). For the final year, the knife will feature a mourning dove, and will have a dark red bone handle. The first four years featured the ruffed grouse with an amber bone handle; American woodcock with a chestnut bone handle; ring-necked pheasant with an old red bone handle; and bobwhite quail with an antique bone handle. All knives come in an attractive tin featuring the artwork of that year’s upland game bird.

Complementing the turkey calls and knives will be a special fine-art print and collector’s patch designed by Gerald W. Putt, of Boiling Springs, Cumberland County. Each art print –available either framed or unframed – and patch will represent the original wildlife artwork used for each product line.

The patches, for both series, sell for $5.66. Also, both framed prints, which are 13×18 inches, sell for $179.95, and unframed prints are available for $79.95. All products are subject to state sales tax and shipping and handling charges.

To wrap up this five-year series, the Game Commission also is offering a display case that holds all five turkey calls and a frame that holds five patches. Both the display case and patch frame were designed by Top Calls, of Renovo, and are handcrafted from Pennsylvania cherry wood.

The turkey call display case, which sells for $65 (plus tax and shipping), has “Wild Turkey Heritage Collection” engraved on it along with the Game Commission logo. Customers also may request that the engraving be personalized. The display case dimensions are 17 inches high, by 10.5 inches wide by 2.75 inches deep.

The patch frame sells for $35.85 (plus tax and shipping), and is engraved with the Game Commission logo and the words “Pennsylvania Game Commission.” Customers also may have it personalized. The frame’s dimensions are 25 inches wide, by six inches high by one inch deep.

Orders for the display case and frames may be placed by calling the Game Commission’s Paid Publications Division at 1-888-888-3459 (toll-free). Photos of both items are posted on the Outdoor Shop for review only.

A limited supply of the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Upland Game Bird Knives and Turkey Calls are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Tags: Down-N-Dirty Outdoors

LEWISBURG, Ky. --(Ammoland.com)- Just in time for spring gobbler season, Down-N-Dirty Outdoors has launched a new website feature that’s sure to help you bag old Tom by teaching you to become more fluent in talking turkey.

Success in spring turkey hunting relies almost entirely on vocal interaction with the birds to call them in. In fact, at this time of year, it’s almost impossible to harvest a turkey without calling out to them. The key to success is being able to converse with the birds in order to talk them into range. Knowing what to say and when to say it are critical skills.

They don’t just call it “talkin’ turkey” for nothing.

To increase your chances of success this spring, DND has created a new interactive feature of its www.downndirtyoutdoors.com website that will show you each of its calls and, more importantly, how to use them to talk the talk. The site offers streaming video on each product’s page that will teach you how to use that call, from the easiest box calls to pot calls to the more complex diaphragm calls. It’s through these videos that you can see and hear the different techniques of clucking, yelping, purring, cutting and cackling from some of the nation’s best callers. Then you can begin to practice those techniques, yourself. That’s why DND has designed this website feature to assist turkey hunters in holding a compelling conversation with the birds that draws them in close.

Certain calls may work on a given day, and others may not because each call has its own distinctive sound. Likewise, your style of calling makes a big difference. A gobbler may answer to one call or style but not to another, so it’s important to have a few different calls in your arsenal. The secret is knowing when and how to use them effectively. Practice being the key to success, DND Outdoors is here to help your turkey season be as successful as possible. Log on to www.downndirtyoutdoors.com to listen, learn, and then go out and harvest a big ol’ long beard!

Through experience and determination, Down-N-Dirty Outdoors has come to offer hunters the most advanced line of game calls available today. From the unique-looking diaphragms to the exceptionally designed pot calls, the entire line is built by hand with one goal in mind: to provide the finest quality, affordable game calls that absolutely mimic your prey. There are no gimmicks; no pretty faces; no bull. The calls from Down-N-Dirty Outdoors are just the finest calls available on the market today, and they will make you a more successful hunter for years to come.

Ammoland.com)- Mark Coin and Jason Kidd, the owners of Down-N-Dirty Outdoors, were both born in the game-rich state of Kentucky, but they weren’t destined to meet until a serendipitous moment much later in life.

Life, it seems, would take them in two very different directions, with Kidd pursuing the elusive long beards while Coin served the Marine Corps.

The two wouldn’t meet until many years later, but Coin and Kidd walked very similar paths, pursuing the same outdoor goals.

From their very youths, the two found themselves drawn to the hunting woods, each honing his calling skills to become a more successful hunter.

It didn’t take Coin long to realize that the harder he worked and the longer he practiced, the more frequently he’d win the competition of calling in birds against other hunters on public land.

He soon found success with those skills off the hunting lands at official calling contests. He won the first owl hooting contest he entered—A Kentucky state competition—and he has won or placed in myriad other contests including a top- five finish in the Owl Hooting division a the NWTF Grand Nationals.

Being also very proficient at calling waterfowl, Coin has won or placed in several world style and meat duck calling contests, including his Kentucky State Title in 2004. He followed that with an appearance in the World Duck Calling Championship that same year.

Down-N-Dirty Outdoors Heckler Call

Elsewhere in Kentucky, Kidd was making a name for himself in his own right as a caller to be reckoned with by winning and placing in several local, regional and state contests. It wasn’t until 2001 that the two would meet in a duck blind, accompanied by a mutual friend. Coin’s and Kidd’s friendship was instantaneous, but their combined potential had yet to be realized.

“After spending a couple of years in the swamps and in blinds together, there was no doubt that our passion and obsession for the outdoors was mutual,” said Kidd.

“Our talks quickly turned to the need for a new breed of call in the market—calls of the highest handcrafted quality that sounded like the real thing and were priced so that any hunter could afford them. In a conversation on the way to the Kentucky State Duck Calling contest in early 2004, Down-N-Dirty Outdoors was born.”

The two dedicated hunters devised a plan around a simple idea: crafting the finest line of turkey calls ever developed, consistent with the style of hunting that made them both successful in the woods and on the stage. The calls had to be tough, they had to last, and most of all, they had to sound exactly like a live bird.

Through their experience and determination, Down-N-Dirty Outdoors has come to offer hunters the most advanced line of game calls available today.

From the unique-looking diaphragms to the exceptionally designed pot calls, the entire line is built by hand with one goal in mind: to create the finest quality, affordable game calls that absolutely mimic your prey.

There are no gimmicks; no pretty faces; no bull. class="wp-caption-text">Springdale, AR Man Wins Third Straight National Gobbling Championship

Every February, callers from all over the nation flock to the NWTF’s National Convention and Sport Show to compete in the championships. This year’s convention had more than $25,000 in cash and prizes going to the top callers in nine divisions.

In the Gobbling Division callers are asked to perform a series of calls that imitate a male wild turkey or gobbler. Callers use the gobble and “spit and drum” calls of a gobbler and sometimes incorporate crow calls, owl calls and more into their routines. A panel of seven expert judges score each call and the slightest mistake can virtually eliminate a caller from contention.

Hailing from Springdale, Richardson uses Hook’s Custom Calls when he competes on stage.

“Winning a title at the Grand National Turkey Calling Championships is like reaching the summit of a mountain. There is no higher place among the turkey calling’s elite,” said George Thornton, NWTF CEO. “The atmosphere in the room during the trophy presentation is electric. Raising the first-place trophy at these contests means that you have beaten the best callers in the world.”

Each year, thousands of outdoor enthusiasts and NWTF supporters rally at the NWTF National Convention and Sport Show. The event features the Grand National Calling Championships, seminars from hunting pros, more than 550 vendor booths, top entertainers at evening functions and more.
Tags: <a

Hunter's Specialties Li'l Deuce Call
Hunter's Specialties
Cedar Rapids, IA – -(AmmoLand.com)- In 2009 Hunter’s Specialties introduced their innovative new Ring Zone® technology to the world of turkey hunting.
The Ring Zone calls were the result of extensive scientific testing about how turkeys hear and how the sound of a hen could be realistically reproduced in a call. The result was the Ring Zone call, a pan call with a ring around it that creates a resonance that faithfully reproduces the sound of a live hen turkey. Sounds produced by the call were the closest to a live hen ever reproduced as measured by an oscilloscope.
Now for 2010, Hunter’s Specialties has used the new technology to produce the Li’l Deuce Ring Zone. The Li’l Deuce resonates at the same, specific frequencies of a turkey’s optimal hearing range. It has been one of Hunter’s Specialties most popular calls over the years and is a favorite of 5-time World Friction Calling Champion and Hunter’s Specialties Pro Staff member Matt Morrett. The Li’l Deuce Ring Zone is small and compact enough to fit into a shirt pocket yet has plenty of volume to call birds in from a distance. It has a slightly higher pitch which turkeys can’t resist.
The Li’l Deuce Ring Zone is available in both glass and slate versions and comes with a carbon striker. It sells for a suggested retail price o f $22.95.For more information, log onto the Hunter’s Specialties website at www.hunterspec.com, write to 6000 Huntington Court NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402, or call a Consumer Service Specialist at 319-395-0321.Tags: Game Calls, Hunter's Specialties, Turkey Call, Turkey Calling, Turkey Hunting

class="wp-caption-text">Hunter's Specialties

Cedar Rapids, IA – -(AmmoLand.com)- The new Squealing Hen Call from Hunter’s Specialties® reproduces the sound a hen turkey makes during breeding, triggering an internal frenzied response from gobblers to seek and find the source of the sound. This revolutionary call is the first true new innovation in turkey calling in years.

The Squealing Hen call was developed by Hunter’s Specialties Pro Staff member Eddie Salter.

“My family raised turkeys when I was a kid,” said Salter. “Watching the behavior of our pen raised birds helped me learn about turkey vocalizations. I often heard the hen make the squealing sound during breeding, so I started experimenting with calling wild birds using the squeal and had a lot of success. Now turkey hunters have an easy to use call that reproduces that same sound.”

Squealing Hen Turkey Call From Hunter's Specialties

The call is easy to operate. Simply blow into the call while depressing the lever. This puts pressure on the internal Infinity Latex® reed and the authentic high pitched breeding hen sound is produced.

Gobblers are driven to come in and check out the sound, which appeals to both breeding and territorial instincts. The Squealing Hen works great in areas that have seen a lot of hunting pressure, where birds have become extremely wary or conditioned to conventional calls.

The Squealing Hen is field tested and approved by the Hunter’s Specialties Pro Staff team and will make a valuable addition to any turkey hunter’s arsenal of calls this spring.

The Squealing Hen sells for a suggested retail price of $21.99.

For more information, log onto the Hunter’s Specialties website at www.hunterspec.com, write to 6000 Huntington Court NE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52402, or call a Consumer Service Specialist at 319-395-0321.
Tags: <a

It’s obviously a dream come true,” said Johnston, who finished fifth in 2009. “The first phone call I made was to my wife because she didn’t travel here with me this year. As soon as I heard her voice, we both kind of lost it. It was a special moment. I mean this is the best feeling you can have as a turkey caller. It’s hitting a grand slam or winning the Super Bowl.”

Every February, callers from all over the nation flock to the NWTF’s National Convention and Sport Show to compete in the championships. At this year’s convention, sponsored by MidwayUSA , the calling championships had more than $25,000 in cash and prizes going to the top callers. Seats filled up quickly with onlookers wanting see and hear the terrific turkey talk.
<div
