title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- As you walk into the gun store to look for a box of ammunition for your CCW or home defense weapon, you find yourself overwhelmed.

The selection on the shelves raises more questions than answers; you find yourself in an analysis paralysis state and leave the store with doubt and confusion.

The folks at Winchester Ammunition have developed the PDX1 Defender line, not just ammunition for handguns, but an entire line of ammunition for many different calibers and types of firearms from rimfire to shotgun, handgun to centerfire.

PDX1 Defender handgun ammunition, which utilizes the same bullets as Winchester’s law enforcement ammunition in service with the FBI, has become the ammunition of choice for many law enforcement agencies. In 2012, to complement this wildly popular and effective handgun line of ammunition and other PDX1 Defender products, Winchester is introducing another PDX1 Defender shotgun load, expanding their PDX1 Defender centerfire lineup and is introducing a PDX1 Defender rimfire round.

A New Slug
winchester12 PDX1 Defender from Winchester Ammunition
The PDX1 Defender Segmenting Slug is designed to segment or break into three equal pieces when the slug encounters what the FBI calls, “protocol barriers” in plain English; heavy cloth, wallboard, and plywood into ballistic gelatin. This slug gives the advantage of a slug and buckshot in one shell therefore eliminating the need and expense of both and reduces the chance of a slug over-penetrating interior walls as rifled slugs have a tendency to do.

Currently, the PDX1 Defender Segmenting Slug is only offered in 2 ¾ inch, the one ounce load boasts a respectable 1600 fps.

Centerfire Offerings
With more and more folks relying on ARs for their home defense needs, the problem of over penetration is a very real scenario. Winchester’s PDX1 Defender centerfire loaded with the Split-Core Technology bullets are designed to deliver energy when needed and expand rapidly to prevent over penetration.

S308PDB FrontView PDX1 Defender from Winchester Ammunition
New for 2012, is the 77 grain .223 Remington and the 120 grain .308 Winchester offerings.

The new 77 grain round can be fired from any .223 Remington, it is best stabilized in a barrel with a 1-7” or a 1-9”rate of twist. The 77 grain bullet exits the barrel at 2,850 feet per second.

The .308 Winchester offers owners of a .308 chambered AR the same advantages PDX1 Defender fans have come to rely on. The 120 grain bullet has a muzzle velocity of 2500 feet per second.

Both of these rifle loadings have been designed for use in close encounters like those in a home invasion.

A rimfire home defense round?

While I wouldn’t call a .22 magnum handgun an ideal home protection cartridge, the fact remains; the best home protection firearm is the one in your hand when you need it most. If the 22 magnum, which does enjoy brisk sales as a home protection firearm, is that firearm, why not have it loaded with the best designed bullet? Enter the PDX1 Defender 22 – A .22 magnum rimfire cartridge which delivers from a two inch barrel, according to Winchester, a 46 grain jacketed hollow point at 1,200 feet per second, like other PDX1 offerings the bullet is designed for optimal penetration and fast expansion.

I have seen arguments and comparisons of the .22 magnum head to head with the .380, .25 ACP and the .32 ACP. It will be interesting to see how these cartridges stack up against one another once the smoke clears.

About Guns & Tactics Video:
Ammoland.com)- In 2011, Winchester Ammunition revolutionized steel waterfowl ammunition with the launch of Blind Side, the most innovative steel waterfowl product in the company’s history.

“Before Blind Side ammunition, waterfowl hunters could only dream of steel shot that approached the performance of lead. Now, it’s a reality,” said Brett Flaugher, Winchester Ammunition vice president of marketing and sales.

“Our engineers spent years developing Blind Side and we’re taking it to the next level in 2012 by expanding the Blind Side line to offer more choices to hunters.”

For 2012, Blind Side ammunition will be offered in the following gauges, shell lengths and shot sizes (new offerings in bold):

Gauge Shell Length Oz. Shot Velocity Shot Sizes

12 3 1/2” 1 5/8 1400 BB, 1, 2, 3

12 3” 1 3/8 1400 BB, 1, 2, 3, 5

12 2 3/4” 1 1/4 1400 2, 5

20 3” 1 1/16 1300 2, 5

Blind Side ammunition combines ground-breaking, stacked HEX Shot technology and the new Diamond Cut Wad in the most deadly Winchester waterfowl load available. The HEX Shot pellets, shaped much like dice, literally stack together inside the shell, resulting in up to 15 percent more pellets in every shell.

Loaded with 100 percent HEX Shot, hunters get more pellets on target, a larger kill zone and more trauma inducing pellets than ever before – meaning quick kill shots. The shot is designed to hit waterfowl like high-velocity tumbling bricks – preventing over penetration and maximizing energy deposit and knock down shock within the bird.

With a company heritage dating back to 1866, Winchester Ammunition was there for the taming of the American West, the Allied Forces’ victory in World War II and through the years, millions of fond memories made in the great outdoors. Known as The American Legend, Winchester is a global leader in sporting, law enforcement, military and personal defense ammunition production. Winchester continues to raise the bar with new products like Blind Side waterfowl and PDX1 Defender™ personal defense ammunition.

For more information about Winchester Ammunition, visit www.winchester.com, or connect with The American Legend™ on Facebook at Facebook.com/WinchesterAmmunition.
Tags: <a

This unprecedented shoot-off is an unofficial record (the ISSF does not monitor this statistic for official records) for a shoot-off in qualification, breaking Vasily Mosin’s previous 30 target shoot-off at the 2010 World Championships.

With yet another battle ahead of him and an additional 36 targets to wear on his shoulder and concentration, Eller maintained pace in the final with 45 out of 50 targets to score 193 total targets. Deciding to do things the hard way, Eller once again found himself in a shoot-off. This time, his opponent was Russia’s Vitaly Fokeev and the winner would earn the World Championship bronze medal. Keeping it short and sweet, Eller topped Forkeev after four targets and happily claimed the bronze medal.

The more success you have, the thinner the line between success and failure becomes, and success is more difficult. It feels good to be back on the other side,” said Eller in regard to his Winchester Athlete of the Month nod. USA Shooting would like to congratulate Eller on his return to the top ten in the world and wish him success for the 2012 season.

Winchester Ammunition is a Proud Sponsor of the USA Shooting Shotgun Team: Winchester Ammunition has been the exclusive ammunition sponsor and supplier of the USA Shooting Shotgun Team since 1999. title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- Every story needs a beginning, an established point in time at which something starts. It is a beginning that allows a story to move forward and evolve.

The beginning of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company started with inventor Walter Hunt’s 1848 “Volition Repeating Rifle” and its caseless “Rocket Ball” ammunition.

Hunt was a prolific inventor who invented the safety pin, lockstitch needle and fountain pen. But for the Winchester story to begin we need to focus our attention on U.S. Patent 6663 which was granted to Hunt in 1849.

The patent is for Hunt’s .54 caliber tubular magazine rifle, the “Volition Repeater”. The rifle used a coil spring to operate the firing pin and a trigger forced a cartridge into the barrel chamber by moving the breech bolt rearward. Essentially, the trigger design was the ancestor of the lever action of later arms. The rifle also used Hunt’s own patented loaded bullet which he called “Rocket Balls”. This type of ammunition was loaded with powder and to prevent the powder from escaping, the bullet was capped with a cork wad covered in paper which had a flash hole in the center. Only one Hunt rifle is known to have been produced and that rifle now resides in the Cody Firearms Museum.

Showcasing Winchester Beginnings at Rock Island Auction Company

In December 1849, Lewis Jennings received U.S. Patent 6973 for his improvement of the Hunt rifle design. Jennings’ improved version of Hunt’s rifle was manufactured in small numbers by Robbins & Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont, and was a commercial failure. Smith & Wesson of the Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson partnership of Norwich, Connecticut, acquired Jennings’ improved version of the original “Volition Repeater”. Financially aided by New York financier Courtlandt C. Palmer who originally purchased the manufacturing rights of the failed Jennings rifle, Smith & Wesson began to produce their version of the improved repeater in June of 1854. In July 1855, Smith & Wesson and Palmer formed the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in order to manufacture a line of lever action carbines and pistols. Volcanic continued to improve the Rocket Ball type ammunition and the lever action guns that fired it.

As an investor in Volcanic, Oliver F. Winchester was elected a director of the company in 1855 and in the coming years played a pivotal role the evolution of the lever action firearm. In 1856 Volcanic became insolvent with the bankrupt firm’s assets being purchased by Oliver Winchester who soon reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Company. Under Winchester’s leadership, New Haven took a strong interest in developing new types of cartridges for leaver action firearm. As an employee of New Haven, Benjamin Henry perfected the self-contained metallic rimfire cartridge.

The .44 Henry, as it was known, was much larger and more powerful cartridge to be used in lever action arms. Under Henry’s supervision, a new rifle loosely designed on the Volcanic repeaters was manufactured to accept the new .44 Henry cartridge. The result was the Henry Rifle of 1860 and the success of the rifle established New Haven in the lever action repeater firearms market. In May 1866, the New Haven Arms Company was renamed Winchester Repeating rifle Company. Continuing on its success with the Henry Rifle, Winchester introduced the Model 1866, Model 1873, and Model 1876 Lever Action Rifles. Winchester produced some of the earliest repeating rifles that were popular among Western settlers, forever solidifying the Winchester name to “The Gun that Won the West”. (For more Winchester history see, for example, George Madis’ The Winchester Book.)

This December auction has some of the earliest examples of firearms associated with Winchester heritage. There are several Volcanic Pistols. Serial number 2123 is a deluxe factory engraved New Haven Arms Volcanic No. 2 Navy Pistol fitted with relief carved ivory grips. The two piece ivory grips feature a relief carved Mexican Eagle and Serpent motif inside an oval and the brass receiver has a deluxe scroll engraving with the tight and detailed scrollwork extending the back strap and butt and a small flourish of scrollwork on the underside of the receiver below the cartridge elevator.

The sideplates having oval inscription panels featuring relief engraved borders. If you are looking for a standard New Haven Volcanic No. 2 Navy Pistol, check out serial numbers 2471 and 2026. These are two of the 700 to 1000 No. 2 Navy Pistols that are believed to have been produced by New Haven. Serial number 1470 is a Navy Pistol manufactured by Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, making it one of approximately 1500 Navy Pistol manufactured with an 8” barrel before the company was reorganized as the New Haven Arms Company. Interested in a New Haven Volcanic No. 1 Pistols? This December auction has two: serial number 484 and serial number 1420. Note that serial number 1420 has a 3 ½” barrel and serial number 484 has a 6” barrel. Total production of the No. 1 Pistol with a 3 ½” barrel is estimated at 850 and total production of the No. 1 pistol with a 6” barrel is estimated ate 225.

There are also Volcanic Carbines in the December sale. Serial number 2715 is a factory engraved example featuring large open type scrollwork on the receiver, upper receiver tang and buttplate heel. The engraving is very similar to the engraving on the Volcanic pistol (serial number 1159) pictured on page 9 of R.L. Wilson’s Winchester Engraving. Serial numbers 158 and 10 are examples of the standard New Haven produced Volcanic Carbine. And like the pistols, the carbines are also a scarce historical firearm with approximately 1000 carbines being produced from 1857 to 1860.There are also several examples of Henry Rifles. Serial number 5011 is a factory engraved example with an engraving similar to that pictured in R.L. Wilson’s Winchester Engraving, page 23. The front receiver panels feature large floral designs in double bordered panels with scalloped edges. A hunting dog on point surrounded by open scrollwork is engraved on the left side plate. Scrollwork flourishes are present on the top and sides of the receiver and upper tang. The buttplate heel has a scroll engraving with a star burst on the butt trap. For a standard example of a Henry Rifle see serial numbers 9461 and 2902. Interested in a U.S. contract Hew Haven Arms Henry Rifle? See serial numbers 3526 and 3919.

These two Henry Rifles were part of an 800 rifle order purchased by the Ordnance Department to arm the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry Regiment. The rifles were stamped with the C.G.C. initials of Ordnance Sub-Inspector Charles G. Chapman on the right side of the barrel and script C.G.C. initials on the stock wrist. During the Civil War, the 1st D.C. Cavalry had the distinction of being the only Federal unit to be completely equipped with Henry Rifles.

This December Rock Island Auction Company is fortunate to be offering our clients several different examples of Volcanic pistols and carbines and Henry Rifles.

If you are a Winchester collector this is not the auction to miss. In the next few months you will want to pay close attention as this December auction will certainly be offering more examples of early Winchester heritage.

About:<br

The shot is designed to hit waterfowl like high-velocity tumbling bricks – preventing over penetration and maximizing energy deposit and knock-down shock within the bird.

The new .17 HMR Varmint LF load by Winchester Ammunition features a 15.5 grain bullet designed with a Polymer Tip for ultra-flat trajectories and delivers a blistering 2550 fps velocity. The Varmint LF uses a non-corrosive primer and clean burning powder to generate a sure-fire ignition every time.

Winchester continues to raise the bar with new products like Blind Side waterfowl and PDX1 Defender personal defense ammunition.

For more information about Winchester Ammunition, visit www.winchester.com, or connect with The American Legend on Facebook at Facebook.com/WinchesterAmmunition.
Tags: SoldUSA.com

MATTHEWS, NC --(Ammoland.com)- A colorfully rich and vibrant poster from 1909, advertising the Winchester .401 caliber self-loading rifle, one of the most highly sought after of the Winchester images, sold for $4,246 in an Internet and catalog auction that went online in mid-December and ended Jan. 22 by SoldUSA.com.

The poster was the top lot of the hundreds that changed hands.

The auction featured an array of categories: vintage firearms, ammunition and ammo boxes, militaria, advertising items, hunting and fishing and a nice selection of rare Buffalo Bill memorabilia. “Thanks to the high prices realized in this auction, we’ve had numerous inquiries from consignors for the next sale, ending March 19,” remarked David Reichle of SoldUSA.com.

Winchester poster: The top lot of the sale was this Winchester poster from 1909, art by Philip R. Goodwin ($4,246).

Mr. Reichle said he was impressed with the spirited bidding in the Jan. 22 auction, and took it as a sign the economy is in a state of recovery. “Not only were prices going higher than even we expected, but we signed up around 200 new bidders, who competed with the large number of old bidders who also participated,” he said. “The sale overall was very encouraging.”

The Winchester poster was a beauty, and a rare beauty at that, originally executed by Philip R. Goodwin (specifically for Winchester) and lithographed circa 1908. The poster measured 15 ¼ inches by 29 ½ inches (which is correct), and had both top and bottom bands. It had some light wrinkling near the top and bottom, but the piece’s rarity overrode its minor flaws.

Following are additional highlights from the auction. All prices quoted include a 13 percent buyer’s premium.

The sale’s second top lot was another Winchester item – a 1917 calendar titled Spooked, originally painted in 1915 by W.K. Leigh (for Winchester) and lithographed in 1916 by the American Litho Co. (N.Y.). Also, a bright and clean shell box for Winchester Precision 200 target cartridges (.22 cal.) brought $475. All the shells were correct and three had been polished.

A beautiful condition Burnside cavalry carbine rifle, all-original and fully functional in dry operation, hammered for $1,718. The metal on the weapon had a plum/brown patina, with no deep pitting, and the wood had not been sanded or otherwise touched. The bore showed strong rifling, with normal widespread pitting. A label said the rifle had been “used at Fort Sanders.”

An Evans lever-action sporting rifle with an interesting provenance changed hands for $1,302. The weapon had been assembled from leftover parts after the Evans Repeating Rifle Company went into bankruptcy in 1879. The work was supposedly done by E.G. Ridout & Co. (N.Y.) or Turner & Ross (Boston, Mass.), the two firms that acquired Evans’ remaining stock.

An extremely rare 1864 Lamson, Goodnow & Yale Company contract musket, with fantastic cartouches on the stock, scored a bull’s-eye for $1,163. Only around 50,000 guns in this line were made, with this particular model being the last of the three types produced by the firm. The metal on the musket had a silver gray patina, with some light to moderate pinprick pitting.

A nice Civil War-era Whitney ‘New Model’ .31 caliber 5-shot revolver with a 6-inch barrel rang out at $1,092. The revolver was complete and in fine, original condition. The barrel and frame showed a uniform brown patina and the trigger guard a dull brass finish. The original numbered walnut grips were solid and intact. A prior owner had carved his initials into the grip.

An early World War II German Luftwaffe radio operator/air gunner badge, cased and made by C.E. Junkers (Berlin) coasted to $1,056. The beautiful wartime badge featured two-piece construction, with two rivets on the reverse mounting an eagle to an oak leaf wreath. The original blue leatherette case had outside gold lettering, and was hinged with a locking front.

Rounding out the sale’s top lots, an 1860 Colt Army pistol with a very rare detachable shoulder stock, measuring 17 inches long and boasting an all-original wood butt stock with brass butt plate, commanded $565; and a Springfield-Krag M1899 carbine (3rd Model, made in 1902), one of only 2,000 manufactured and one of the last carbines in the Krag series, garnered $783.

SoldUSA.com’s next Internet and catalog auction is already online and will conclude March 19. Featured are hundreds of lots of militaria, ammunition, firearms and more. At press time, consignments for this sale were still being accepted. To consign an item or a collection, you may call SoldUSA.com at (704) 815-1500, or e-mail them at support@SoldUSA.com.

Rock Island Auction Company

Moline, IL --(AmmoLand.com)- This past weekend I watched John Wayne rule the Wild West with his trusty Winchester rifle. How I would have loved living out the adventures he played on screen! Of course, the old west has been highly romanticized. Still, I often imagine myself learning from the hardships and taking part in the triumphs those early settlers experienced.

Few things represent that golden era more than Winchester. Just mentioning the legendary name takes me to a time when America was charging ever forward, expanding westward; becoming a global player. The Winchester brand was a manufacturing behemoth, a model of American industry. It’s important we remember how intertwined the history of the United States and Winchester firearms truly were. For over a hundred years, classic Winchester rifles were carried by American settlers across the vast frontier and by soldiers on battlefronts too numerous to mention.

It has been nearly fifty years since Winchester’s heyday. It’s sad to see an American legend as large as Winchester fall so fast and so completely. While we drool over the pre-’64 Winchesters and wonder why “they don’t build them like they used to,” there’s something we forget.

Golden Era of Winchester

Winchester was long ago forced to halt production because people were buying newer, “more cost-effective” guns. In an ironic twist, this has left the higher-quality, older guns, like Winchester, collecting dust on the shelves. Of course, other legends of American industry have suffered as well. GM is no longer the king of the auto industry, our politicians have allowed us to become dependant on foreign money and, in general, we have become a shadow of the powerhouse we once were.

The glory days of Winchester was a boon time for this country. Self-reliance was our trademark and classic Winchester rifles were, and are, a shining symbol of our pioneer spirit.

Through grit, determination and sheer force of will, we forged the greatest empire ever known to man. What would America be without those hardened settlers trudging across the great expanse with Winchester in hand and Colt on hip?

Today we find our past slipping away.

Wild West Cowboys With Trusty Winchester Rifles

This alone makes the revered, American made Winchesters such a precious commodity. They’re a direct tie to our historic past. Each firearm contains a portion of this country’s soul.

The sad fact that we now purchase the Winchester brand from foreign markets is an unbelievable disgrace.

Most of us would rather have seen the name die completely than for such a thing to happen. But happen it did. And in a world where our fathers blood, sweat and tears are being sold to the highest bidder – what more could we expect?

We owe it to the few remaining classic Winchesters that they be preserved forever. So much of the detail and workmanship that made these weapons so special have been tossed aside.

That’s why collectors of antique firearms are so very important.

They preserve the history of this country. A history that men like Teddy Roosevelt and Buffalo Bill Cody helped shape. They knew the value of these legendary rifles. Today it is up to us to keep their legacy alive in the hope that we can recapture the magic and the boldness these great guns represent.

About:
Winchester Ammunition

East Alton, IL – -(AmmoLand.com)- Considered one of the most innovative products in Winchester Ammunition history, the Supreme Elite Dual Bond bullet line is expanding in 2010, adding .44 Rem-Mag and .45-70 Gov’t to the big-bore hunting lineup.

The .44 Rem-Mag features a 240-grain bullet and the .45-70 Gov’t features a 375-grain bullet. The ‘bullet within a bullet’ design delivers dramatic stopping power and massive tissue damage and is suitable for whitetail deer to large dangerous game, such as bear.

“The Dual Bond bullet is technologically unsurpassed by any bullet commercially available today,” said Brett Flaugher, vice president of domestic and international marketing and sales for Winchester Ammunition. “Anyone who shoots this bullet will experience the best Winchester has to offer in our slug and big-bore hunting lineup.”

The outer jacket is designed for maximum upset and to open up into six segments. The inner jacket works with the bonded lead core and forms another six segments at a controlled rate resulting in a an expansion with 12 segments and is 1.5 times larger than the original bullet diameter.

The heavy outer jacket is mechanically bonded to the inner bullet. The inner bullet utilizes a proprietary bonding process, which welds the lead core to a second jacket that results in a design that provides for a combination of knockdown power, deep penetration and significant tissue damage while retaining nearly 100% of the original weight. The Supreme Elite® Dual Bond® has a large hollow point cavity, which provides positive expansion at a variety of ranges and impact velocities. Combined, this patent pending technology results in lethal energy transfer on impact.

SKU Description Bullet Wt.

*S44RMDB 44 Rem-Mag 240

*S4570DB 45-70 Gov’t. 375

S454DB 454 Casull 260

S460SWDB 460 S&W 260

S500SWDB 500 S&W 375

SSDB12 12 ga. 2-3/4 slug 375

SSDB123 12 ga. 3 in. slug 375

SSDB20 20 ga. 2-3/4 in. slug 260

SSDB203 20 ga. 3 in. slug 260

*New for 2010

For more information about Winchester Ammunition and its complete line of products, visit www.winchester.com.

Winchester Ammunition prides itself in being a leader of conservation
NASGW

Las Veagas, NV --(AmmoLand.com)- In the hectic days between the NASGW Annual Expo and January’s SHOT Show, it’s easy to somewhat overlook the true recognition deserved by NASGW’s 2009 award-winning manufacturer members.

With the exception of the Chairman’s Award for Industry Leadership (2009 winner – NSSF) each of NASGW’s category achievement awards are made on the basis of detailed member distributor input. NASGW’s balanced appraisal process identifies the best of the best by recognizing top performers based…. and association/industry support. Here’s another look….

For the second year in a row, the NASGW Award for Accessory Manufacturer of the Year went to Birchwood Casey.

Acknowledging their commitment to distributors, VP Mike Wenner said “…they’re an extension of us. We all succeed because we’re on the same team.”

The award for Firearms Manufacturer of the Year went to Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc. “We rely on two-step distribution for 100% of our sales,” said Chris Killoy, VP of Sales and Marketing. Notably, Ruger is a three-time winner of the award and Killoy credits the open lines of communication between distributors, reps and Ruger as a vital element in their success.

Winchester Ammunition, 2009 winner of the Ammunition Manufacturer of the Year award succeeded in managing explosive growth to maximum benefit under strained industry-wide capacities.

“It was all about fair play,” said Brett Flaugher, VP of Marketing and Sales, making sure every distributor got product during the year. “Maybe not everybody was happy, but they were satisfied knowing they got their fair share,” added Flaugher.

Awards are won over time – and the start of our 2010 membership year is a great time to again thank and congratulate the winners and encourage all you deal with to make it a point to be in the running in 2010.
