class="wp-caption-text">Arizona Game and Fish Department

PHOENIX, AZ —-(AmmoLand.com)- Young and first-time hunters preparing for deer season this fall are encouraged to attend or go online to enjoy a free deer-hunting clinic on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m.

Hosted by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the clinic will inform and educate young and first-time hunters about the characteristics of deer, their habits and behaviors. The clinic will also offer tips and techniques for hunting these incredible animals in different habitats and weather conditions. Audience participation is encouraged, and questions from both the attending audience and those submitted by e-mail (webcast@azgfd.gov) from online viewers will be addressed.

The event will be held at the department’s Phoenix office at 5000 W. Carefree Highway. To accommodate all interested hunters and constituents, the event will be webcast live on the Internet by visiting www.azgfd.gov/webcast.

“It’s important to us to provide young and first-time hunters with the basic knowledge and skills to make their pursuit for deer a positive and rewarding experience,” said Brian Wakeling, chief of game management. “For many new hunters that ‘positive experience’ doesn’t always equate to harvesting an animal. It’s the pursuit that is exciting, and this clinic will provide them with the knowledge to help avoid some of the pitfalls that could distract from the hunt itself – like planning for weather, knowing one’s physical capabilities, not getting lost, and others.”

To learn more about hunting in Arizona, visit www.azgfd.gov/hunting.

About:
Pennsylvania Game Commission

HARRISBURG, PA –-(AmmoLand.com)- As treestand use is a popular part of archery deer seasons, as well as other deer seasons, the Pennsylvania Game Commission is offering hunters the opportunity to take a free, voluntary online treestand safety course.

To take the course, go to the agency’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), click on “Education” in the left-hand column of the homepage, then click on “Treestand Safety Course” in the “Education” box in the upper right-hand corner of the page.

“Treestand safety has evolved over the years as new research and statistics become available,” said Keith Snyder, Game Commission Hunter-Trapper Education Division chief. “What were once considered to be ‘safe’ treestand safety practices 10 years ago are simply not considered ‘safe’ today.

“By reviewing this 15-minute interactive, narrated treestand safety course, a hunter will learn about the latest Treestand Manufacturers Association’s safety standards and guidelines.”

Snyder noted that, in 2000, the Game Commission incorporated a specific treestand safety segment into its basic Hunter-Trapper Education course, which is required for all first-time license buyers regardless of age, as well as its voluntary Bowhunter education course.

“One of the key messages is the importance of a have and using a full-bodied fall restraint device or harness,” Snyder said. “According to the Treestand Manufacturers Association, 82 percent of treestand-related deaths were attributed to the fact that the hunter was not using a fall-restraint devise.”

Other treestand safety messages include:

Stay away! – Avoid permanent stands; they weaken with age, damage trees and are eyesores.

Smart choice! – Used stands certified by the Treestand Manufacturers Association (TMA). They are commercially designed and tested to meet high standards.

Read the directions! – Read and follow manufacture’s guidelines. Practice with stands before hunting.

Look carefully! – Inspect all stands and climbing equipment before each use.

Choose wisely! – Select only suitable trees. Avoid dead trees or those with loose bark.

Buckle up! – Use a fall-restraint device, preferably a full-body harness, any time your feet leave the ground. This includes climbing up and down the tree. Choose a harness that will keep you upright and will not restrict your breathing.

Keep it short! – Make sure there is no slack in the fall-restraint tether when you are in a sitting position.

Hold on tight! – Maintain three points of contact – at least two feet and one hand, or two hands and one foot – with the climbing system, ladder or tree at all times while climbing. And remember to use a fall restraint system, preferably a full-body harness, anytime your feet leave the ground.

Climb safely! – Use a haul line to pull up gear. If hunting with a firearm, make sure it is unloaded and the muzzle is covered! Never attach the line near the trigger or trigger guard.

Ask a friend! – Use 3 persons to set-up any ladder-type treestand.

Hunt with a plan! – In the event of a fall, be prepared to help yourself. Have someone contact authorities if you don’t return at an established time.

Tags: International Training Inc's Women’s Only Weekend

DILLEY, TX - -(AmmoLand.com)- International Training, Inc. Texas held its first Women’s Only Weekend this past July. Sixteen women from coast to coast attended this unique training, designed specifically for the threats facing today’s women.

Saturday morning started with Greg Reid, Manager, Government Operations, giving a classroom brief on Advanced Driver Training and Crash Avoidance. This course takes basic driving skills to the next level where students gain hands-on experience in practical driving maneuvers in realistic emergency situations found on today’s highways and back roads. Instructor John Estrada graphically demonstrated the power of an airbag and why we must maintain a minimum safe distance from the airbag.

The class moved to Tracks 1 and 2 and “Ladies, start your engines!” was announced.
The women learned effective threshold braking and the use of vision to anticipate and avoid accidents, even while driving under stressful conditions until everyone successfully made it “through the cones”. On track 2, the same principles were extended to high speed driving, where students pushed the ITI fleet vehicles in excess of 80-90 MPH on the back “straight”.

After a lunch break, the ladies returned to brave 100 degree plus temperatures for a hands-on demonstration and practical application of unarmed defense techniques. Attacks from the front, attacks from behind, and ground fighting techniques were all practiced on the padded Defensive Tactics surface.

The second day started with Senior Instructor Benjamin Kurata presenting Handgun Orientation in the main classroom. A thorough review of the 4 major types of handguns, how to safely load, fire, reload, and unload them was covered. From there, types of ammunition, projectiles, and ammo components, storage and use were thoroughly discussed before the class made its way to Ranges 1 and 2 at the ITI Texas live fire range area. Director Bank Miller worked with half the class on semi-automatic pistols and Ben Kurata worked with the other half of the class on double action revolvers. At mid-morning the groups switched, and everyone live fired many, many rounds through both types of handguns before the lunch break.

After lunch, the group returned to the range complex where everyone was issued a semiautomatic pistol and magazines. Director Miller worked with half of the class on Range One, covering shooting on the move and multiple target engagement. Ben Kurata worked with the other half of the class on the Reactive Steel range, using non-toxic frangible ammunition, which allows shooting on the steel targets at closer, more realistic distances. The Reactive Steel exercises were a big hit with the students, and two students inquired about purchasing dueling trees for their personal use. At the mid-afternoon mark the groups switched ranges again so that everyone was exposed to shooting on the move, engaging multiple targets and lady versus lady shooting on reactive steel.

At the conclusion of the day, the class re-grouped in the main classroom for closing, critique, and graduation. Some of the comments made included:

“You guys nailed it!”
“This is the only place I am aware of where you can get this level of training in driving, empty hand defense, and shooting.”
“When’s the next one? I have a lot of friends that will want to attend.”

Bank Miller and Ben Kurata asked the class for input as to what the next level of Women’s Only Weekend should include. Based on the input from the class, Women’s Weekend II is scheduled for Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11 and will include the following:
•	Day 1: Advanced Driver Training and Crash Avoidance – full day on the tracks
•	Day 2: Home and Vehicle Defense – full day on the range, starting with shooting from, in, and around vehicles, then Home Defense techniques – dealing with corners, hallways, “fatal funnels”, stairways, and diminished light conditions.

As in Women’s Weekend I, ITI Texas will supply all vehicles, gas, tires, safety equipment, handguns, magazines, holsters, ammo, and targets including vehicles for ballistic testing. No registration required.

Brian Anthony, the wildlife manager for over a decade in Unit 22 (well known for its dense bear populations), will provide tips, strategies, and information for bear hunting that is useful to beginners as well as experienced hunters. The workshop is approximately two hours and will cover:

* Arizona black bear biology<br

Knowing this information will make your hunts much more productive – and hopefully successful.”

Anthony added, “Last year I received close to 50 phone calls from sportsmen about bear hunting in Region 6. We like to be able to help folks have a safe and successful hunt, but I wasn’t able to get very detailed with them over the phone. My goal with these workshops is to offer more concise information to a larger audience and help folks take advantage of this over-the-counter big game hunting opportunity.”

Hunting Arizona’s black bear is challenging, exciting, rewarding and has the potential to provide the hunter with a harvest of a lifetime. Fall hunts are open to nonpermit-tags purchased over-the-counter and are available at all department offices and license dealers statewide. We also work to defeat anti-gun legislation, pass pro-gun bills, and reform existing laws to benefit all Ohio citizens.

Unlike many anti-gun groups, we do not get our funding or support from wealthy activists or big corporations. We are a non-partisan, all-volunteer organization. Officers and supporters donate their time and skills to the pro-gun cause. Not a single dime from donors is spent on salaries or wasteful overhead. class="wp-caption-text">Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks

PRATT, KS - -(AmmoLand.com)- The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has announced that this year’s Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Workshop scheduled for Sept. 25-27 is full, with 128 women registered. There is a lengthy waiting list, and applications are no longer being accepted.

“The fact that we are filled to capacity three months before the workshop demonstrates the important need that this fun and educational program fills in connecting women with the outdoors.” says Ross Robins, KDWP’s Education Section chief. “It also reflects well on long-time program coordinator Jami Vonderschmidt and on the skill and experience of our volunteer instructors.”

The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Program (BOW) is designed to provide women a chance to learn about the outdoors and outdoor recreation in a friendly, non-threatening environment. During the three-day workshop at Rock Springs 4-H Center, volunteer instructors teach participants a variety of skills, including fishing, shotgunning, orienteering, rifle marksmanship, botany, dog handling, archery, and more. Kansas held its first BOW workshop in 1994, and this year marks the 16th anniversary of the event.

Studies have shown that many women do not participate in outdoor recreation because they have not had an opportunity to learn the outdoor skills that make outdoor activities enjoyable. The popularity of BOW proves that when that opportunity is offered, many women take advantage of it with enthusiasm. Women who participate in this program learn the outdoor skills that allow them to fully enjoy the outdoor environment, while building self-confidence.

Registration for the 2010 workshop opens next May. Women wishing to ensure a spot in next year’s workshop should mark their calendars and register early. For more information, phone 620-672-5911.
Tags: Arizona Game and Fish Department

Arizona - -(AmmoLand.com)-The Arizona Game and Fish Department is offering the public an opportunity to view the majestic bighorn sheep in their natural habitat during its annual Bighorn Sheep Workshops.

The workshop offers wildlife enthusiasts an opportunity to learn about these sure-footed animals and view them in their native habitat during two separate two-day workshops on July 31-Aug. 1 and Aug. 7-8.

The first day of each workshop involves mandatory classroom education from 6-8 p.m. at the Kingman Game and Fish office, followed the next day by a field trip on the Colorado River from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The sheep-viewing boat trip will depart from Willow Beach.

These popular workshops are open members of the public age 14 and up. Nobody under 14 will be registered. Space, however, is limited to 40 people per session. Preference will be given to those who have not attended the workshop in the last two years.

Participants will be selected through a draw process. Applications received on or before June 22 will be drawn at random. Following the draw, all applicants will be contacted by mail.

“The draw process is an attempt to give people in outlying areas of Arizona a chance to make it on one of the two workshops,” said Zen Mocarski, public information officer in Kingman. “Our goal is to reach as many people as possible, and that’s difficult with only 80 open spaces over two weeks.”

The workshops include an optional tour the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery prior to the Colorado River field trip. The 45-minute tour will begin at 9 a.m. and will feature both sport fish and endangered native fish.

To reserve a spot, a $20 per person refundable deposit is required in the form of a check made out to the Wildlife for Tomorrow Foundation to help reduce the problem of no-shows. The money is refunded when a person either attends the workshop or calls to cancel at least 48 hours in advance. Wildlife for Tomorrow is a non-profit group that works closely with the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Registration is by mail only. Send the check to: Sheep Workshop, Arizona Game and Fish Department, 5325 N. Stockton Hill Road, Kingman, AZ 86409. Include the names of participants, address, phone, e-mail (if available) and specify which weekend is preferred. Also, please include a note if you are interested in the tour of the fish hatchery.

Cash donations, which are not mandatory to participate, will be accepted at the workshop to help offset increasing costs for boat rentals and fuel. Please do not send cash donations prior to the event.

Participants are encouraged to bring a camera, water, snacks, a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. No tripods will be allowed on the boats, but small coolers are okay.

“It will be hot on the river,” Mocarski advised, “but that’s when bighorn come down for a drink. There is limited shade on the boats, but the temperatures will be in the triple digits.”

Anyone with questions about the workshop may contact Mocarski at (928) 692-7700, ext. 2301, or e-mail: zmocarski@azgfd.gov.
Tags: Pheasants Forever

Grand Island, Neb. – -(AmmoLand.com)- Pheasants Forever (PF) and Quail Forever’s (QF) 2009 Focus on Forever Workshop will be held this July 17-19 in Grand Island, Nebraska. The annual event provides participants with information and tools needed to develop future stewards of the land.

To be held at the Holiday Inn, Grand Island – Midtown, the 2009 Focus on Forever Workshop will work to inspire PF/QF chapters and individuals to provide outdoor adventures that connect youth and their families to wild places and the critters that live there. Seminar topics will include, among others, “How to Teach Wingshooting Skills to Kids,” “Reading the Landscape with a GPS,” “Creating Outdoor Adventure Clubs,” “Starting a Local Shooting Team” and more.

“The future of pheasants, quail and other wildlife depends on having adults and mentors who possess a passion for passing on our outdoor traditions,” said Rich Wissink, PF/QF National Youth Programs Specialist, “This will undoubtedly be the strongest Focus on Forever Workshop to date, as we’ve compiled an unmatched list of presenters and topics. We’ll be utilizing Grand Island’s Public Shooting Park, and we’ll also be examining some award-winning programs from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.”

PF/QF chapters are encouraged to send more than one participant to the Focus on Forever Workshop in order to take advantage of as many sessions as possible – and it may even net your chapter a new gun. For each participant a chapter registers, the chapter will receive one ticket for a special youth programs drawing. The more individuals a chapter sends to the workshop, the more chances to win either a Beretta Super Black Eagle II 12 gauge ($1,500 value), a youth programs activities box ($500 value) or youth merchandise ($250 value). PF/QF chapters are encouraged to register as early as possible, as last year’s workshop was filled to capacity.

The cost of the 2009 Focus on Forever Workshop is $250 per person, which includes workshop registration, instruction materials and meals. To register for the 2009 Focus on Forever Workshop and view the entire workshop program, click here. For questions or more information about the workshop, please contact Rich Wissink, PF/QF National Youth Programs Specialist at rwissink@pheasantsforever.org or call (715) 722-0286.

Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever are non-profit conservation organizations dedicated to the protection and enhancement of pheasant, quail, and other wildlife populations in North America through habitat improvement, land management, public awareness, and education. PF/QF has more than 130,000 members in 700 local chapters across the continent.

About:<br
