LearnAboutGuns.com Interview:
Q: What is your Blog’s Official Name?
A: LearnAboutGuns.com

Q: What is your Name?
A: Eric of The LearnAboutGuns.com blog.

Q: Where are you located?
A: The suburbs of Chicago, IL., where many residents and the government is anti gun rights. I’m an African American male in my mid twenties. I’m a law student, and also hold a bachelor of science degree. Jessie Jackson certainly does not speak for me. I am a registered Democrat, although I would likely vote Libertarian if there were a viable Libertarian candidate who wasn’t really a socially conservative Republican in disguise. I currently work for a law firm, but have worked for software firms before beginning my career in the legal field. I am law abiding, peaceable, and generally a soft spoken person. I own multiple firearms, including my favorites which are pump action shotguns. I enjoy firearms, but they are not my primary hobby. I grew up in a family that was ardently opposed to guns, and it was not until I was about 22 years old that I really began to think about guns rights as a good things.

Q: What is the point of view or purpose of your blog?
A: I write from a pro gun rights standpoint.  I’m a person who supports all of our constitutional rights, including gun ownership, although I try to stick to gun related issues on my blog.

Q: How long has your Blog been active?
A: 11 months as of February 2009.

Q: What do you do for a living or is your blog a full time job?
A: I am a law student who will graduate in May.  I work part time in the legal field now.

Q: Do you have a specific agenda or goal of your blog?
A: My goal is to promote gun rights and convince anti gun people of the value of gun ownership, through polite and rational arguments.

Q: What is one thing that you want your readers to know about you?
A: I’m a pretty liberal minded African American who lives in the Chicago area, and I’m a gun owner.  A lot of people seem surprised that I support gun rights, and I want to dispel the myth that people in my demographic cannot or do not support gun rights.

Q: What was the best or worst thing you did on your blog that go the most reaction from your readers?
A: My readers seem to like this article on the Pitfalls of Pacifism the best:

“I noticed a link to LearnAboutGuns.com coming from this site, whose author states that she would rather “hold the burning end of a lit cigarette than a gun.” She describes herself as a Pacifist, and believes that it is wrong to use a gun in self defense, even to stop a would-be rapist and murder that breaks in during the night.  While I understand and share the respect for human life that underlies the Pacifist philosophy she embraces, I cannot join in the naive and dangerous belief that a person should allow a violent criminal to kill them or another innocent person…”

Q: Obviously since we are featuring you, your blog is Pro gun.  What do you think the outlook is for the future of gun rights in America?
A: I think the outlook is good, especially in light of D.C. v. Heller. However I think that America’s gun owners need to remain vigilant, especially during Obama’s presidency, if we are to stop the slow erosion of our Second Amendment rights.

If we allow the anti gun groups to whittle away at the Second Amendment, and to reduce the number of gun owners, eventually our voice will be too small to successfully defend the right to gun ownership.

Q: What hunting or shooting sports hobbies do you have?
A: I primarily own guns (especially shotguns) for self defense purposes, and practice regularly with them at my local range.  I also enjoy trapshooting.

Q: Of the topics you cover what do you enjoy writing about the most?
A: I probably like writing about reasons to support gun rights the most.  The anti gun myths out there need to be debunked, and pointing out the logic flaws in anti gun rights reasoning is quite fun.

Q: What things would you like to do or expand in your blog to in the future?
A: I would like to add more reviews of various guns and accessories.  I would also like to add interviews with notable individuals who are central to the gun rights debate.

Q: What would you like to say to those that are anti gun or maybe just unsure of the purpose of guns in our society today?
A: Like the millions of law abiding gun owners in America, I am a peace loving person. I own firearms so that I can defend myself and my family, should that need arise. While I sincerely hope that I am never in the position of having to fire a gun in self defense, I rest easier at night knowing that I could stop an armed robber, racist attacker, terrorist, or home invader if the need arose.

I am also comforted knowing that my girlfriend could stop a rapist or murderer, rather than becoming a victim.

The simple fact is that gun control laws don’t stop criminals from getting guns, and instead only disarm the law abiding citizens, making them easier targets for the criminals. Nor is it justifiable to deprive law abiding citizens of their constitutional right to keep and bear arms for self defense, just because criminals misuse guns, just as criminals misuse other tools.

Given those undeniable truths, I would encourage my fellow law abiding citizens who do not yet own a gun to do the following:

  • Go shooting for the first time.
  • Choose the proper gun for self defense.
  • Purchase that gun.
  • Store the gun in a responsible manner.
  • Become proficient at safely using that gun.
  • Join the NRA to protect your right to have a gun for self defense.

Doing all the above may save your life one day and can also benefit society as a whole.

You say you want your guns, I say I want my loved ones back. Let’s meet in the middle and have real gun control that makes a difference.

How a person can say they would not try to save there own life might be understandable, but what would they say if it was their child or other family member being raped and killed in front of them. This is when the ANTI-GUN fanatic becomes the PRO-GUN advocate.

I agree with the writer. All gun laws do is rob law abiding citizens of the ability to defend themselves. I am a licenced handgun owner in GA and I truly hope that people will one day open their eyes and realize that criminals who want guns will continue to obtain them regardless of whatever laws our gov't sets forth. People should also understand that the police do not have a duty to protect the individual, they have an obligation to protect society as a whole. Police can't be everywhere, and therefore, the responsibility of defense should be left to… Read more »
