Indiana Firearms Pre-Emption Law One Year Old

Indianapolis, IN –-(Ammoland.com)-  This month marks the one-year anniversary of SB 292, the Indiana pre-emption law.

For those who may not know, that is the law that now prevents any local government in Indiana from enacting gun laws of their own. Not only does it stop them from that practice, but it removed all the laws that they had accumulated since recorded history.

Now citizens with a valid handgun license can carry their firearms in places they were prohibited from in the past by local political subdivisions and their vast amount of laws.

Do you think we could pass a law like that now? I’m not sure we could. Even though I was the author of that bill it took a lot of good people’s help to make it law. There were many legislators who stayed on board the entire time. Some came on after asking me many questions and believing in my answers. Many of the legislators were coming under enormous pressure from their local officials in their districts to vote against the bill.

It also took a lot of participation from the citizens to make calls and write letters to support the measure. I think we hit it at just the right time, it was timing and a lot of work that made it happen.

Speaking of time, times have changed. It’s like 1994 all over again. Has the worm turned? The fur is flying about guns and ammunition and how easy it is for folks to buy them. Also, we know that every time something happens it will just keep this controversy hot. And we have the usual troops from the federal level that never let us down on seizing the moment.

Right now it’s hard to say what we might expect in the next Indiana General Assembly; I will certainly speak about it at our Patriot meeting Saturday. I hope all of you will try to attend. I know that commitments come up and can’t be avoided and there are priorities, but it certainly helps Margie and me to have our friends join us each month and in particular, in the climate we find ourselves in now.

We look forward to seeing you Saturday,

Jim and Margie

My local park still has the sign from when their ordinance is in effect. I laugh every time I carry past it.
