NEWTOWN, Conn –-( Only four out of ten Americans support so-called “universal background checks” at gun shows after being informed that the vast majority of firearms sales at these shows are transacted by licensed retailers that already conduct such checks through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) as required by federal law.

The poll results stand in contrast to the vague claim often reported in the media and attributed to gun control proponents without important contextual detail that 90 percent of Americans surveyed support “universal background checks.”

These findings were the among the results of a national scientific poll of more than 1,200 Americans conducted in November by McKeon & Associates and released today by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry. The McKeon poll found that only 40 percent of respondents said that extension of “universal background checks” to private transactions at gun shows are necessary, while 53 percent said they are not necessary and 7% said they did not know.

The Americans polled also said by a combined 74 percent margin that conducting background checks against an incomplete database was not effective at all or not very effective while 54 percent said that requiring background checks for transferring guns between friends and family members was not at effective at all or not very effective in reducing violent crime.

The poll also discovered that 92 percent of Americans agree that the states should submit all records of persons federally prohibited from owning a firearm to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check Systems (NICS), passing legislation if needed.

Some 70 percent of the survey sample also said that did not believe that government should mandate that all firearms produced incorporate “smart gun” technology should it become commercially available. Only 17 percent approved of a mandate, while 13 percent didn’t know.

“We commissioned this poll to help determine where Americans stood on the various aspects of how the NICS system actually works today,” said Larry G. Keane, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel.

“When properly informed of relevant details, it turns out that only four out of ten, not nine out of ten Americans support so-called ‘universal background checks' at gun shows or for firearms transfers. The poll also found that Americans want a National Instant Criminal Background Check System with a dependable and accurate database, which supports the goal of the FixNICS initiative we launched in 2013 and will continue in 2014.”

The poll conducted Nov. 6-7 has a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percent. Respondents self-identified as 33 percent Democrat, 26 percent Republican and 41 percent independent. As to ethnicity, 62 percent of respondents said they were Caucasian, 18 percent African-American, 11 percent Hispanic; and 9 percent, other. As to age, 20 percent of respondents said they were 18-30; 36 percent, 31-45; 23 percent 46-60; and 21 percent, 60 or older.

    1. OOOOOOPS! I thought that Obucku said that 90% of the country supported more gun control laws! Where did they go? It seems the hype they promoted for their gun control bit the dust, when people started finding out what lies were being told about the situation. Just like the rest of Obucku’s agenda.

    2. The problem we have in this country is stupidity…Many of the so called 40% in favor of expanded and or universal background checks have no clue that a federal background check system was already in place…The Democrats aided by the Denver Commie Post made it seem as if there were no such thing as a criminal back ground check system here in Colorado…Hence the need for a Universal background check system…As claimed by our Democratic controled legislative house…Discounting that a federal background check system was already in place in this state…Governor Hickenlooper has claimed that his signing of this so called extended version is now working in Colorado…The new law is keeping guns out of the hands of criminals…Tell this to the over 100 gangs who reside within the city and county of Denver…We don’t have a gun problem in this state…We have a gang probem…Denver is a sanctuary city for illgals…The Mexican drug cartels run amok with their drugs and human trafficking thumbing their noses at law enforcement…With their drugs being distributed by Denver’s gang bangers… This new law is not going to curtail or stop any of these law breakers from possessing a firearm…
Most are acquired illegally anyhow…Homicide statistics are on the rise in Colorado and the Governor claims his new law is working…What?
…This new law did nothing to stop the recent school shooting at Arapahoe HS…How could this be?…All shooters of noteriety involved in public and or school shootings have used firearms that were legally acquired not illegally acquired…Not one of these guns was the result of a firearm slipping through the gun show loophole as claimed by 28 Colorado state representatives such as Rhonda Fields who today claimed in the Denver Commnie Post that “Dozens of criminals would be walking around with a gun right now if not for the new law”…Add to this number of 28 Reps. another 16 Democratic state senators all of who favored and voted for the extended universal background-check legislation…Thereby thumbing their noses at their constituents…The majority of who disagreed with this idiotic proposal as witnessed during the Senatorial Gun Debates…Of which this year two Reps. were recalled from their position of trust by the citizens of their districts to include the President of the State Senate who happened to be the force behind this new law…Another Democratic Representative recently relinquished her throne fearful that she too would be recalled for violating the trust of her constituents…For being complicit with legislation that has nothing to do with reducing crime nor keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and or the gang bangers…
This was a feel good law to appease the POTUS and nothing more…B. Obama came to town and staged photo op after photo op giving all who sponsored this anti-gun bill a pat of their backs and a kiss on their posteriors…
Regretfully…Criminals will not participate in a Universal back ground check system regardless of the goodness of this ill begotten piece of legislation…This law was designed to harrass and intimidate responsible gun owners into submission and in violation of the second amendment…Many gun owners who are not aware of the new law are now running the risk of becoming a criminal if they give or sell a personal fiream to one of their children, a neighbor or a relative…Doing so even if unknowingly will be considered a crime and they will be cosidered as criminal…Violators can do time behind bars…It is now the law here in Colorado…Govenor John Hickenlooper and his fellow CommieCRats have signed this new law into reality regardless of the will and wishes of the people!
