Ft Collins, CO –-(Ammoland.com)- IBD (Israeli Battle Dressing) to the Rescue!
From a friend and student in UT:
“Last Saturday evening, my wife and I were emerging from a local restaurant just a minute or so after a collision between a bicycle and a car in the resturant's parking lot. The bike and rider had been going at high speed past a parked car, when the car door suddenly opened. The rider went flying into the air and inherited a deep, two-inch gash in her lower leg in the process.
The injured woman was being tended to by the car's driver, and several bystanders. A waitress from the restaurant was rushing over with a roll of paper towels. Another glance revealed a bloody beach towel being held on the woman's leg.
They all looked to be in over their heads, so I decided to assist.
The injured woman was clearly going into shock. One bystander seemed to have taken charge, but he was more than happy to hand-off the whole mess to me! I was told that 911 had been called.
When I looked under the beach towel, I could see the nasty gash, deep enough to reveal the shin-bone, which was splintered. Bleeding was substantial.
I removed an IBD from my kit and immediately applied it to the wound. Bleeding stopped straightaway. I told her she would need a couple of stitches, but would be otherwise fine. That is what she wanted to hear, and she started to calm down.
She complained of the IBD's pressure on the wound. Can't blame her, as it probably hurt like hell!
By the time the ambulance arrived, everything was pretty much under control. The battalion chief commented on what a cool bandage I had. ‘You keep one of those all the time?' he asked.
I replied, ‘Actually, I keep two. One for you, and one for me!'
I was reminded of irrational behavior and thinking errors common with persons going into shock. The injured woman in this case was intent on convincing herself, and the rest of us, that she didn't need to go to the emergency room.
Who are going into shock drop IQ points fast!
Expect it. Don't become a victim of it.”
Comment: When preparedness collides with opportunity, “luck” results! As Operators, we are ever prepared!
