Hyrum  -(Ammoland.com)- Wild elk are in the meadow at the Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area. That means for the first time this winter, you can take a horse-drawn wagon ride through the middle of the herd.

The recent cold weather has pushed about 400 elk into the meadow at Hardware Ranch.

On Dec. 27, Marni Lee, assistant manager at the Hardware Ranch WMA, said cold weather had pushed about 400 elk into the meadow.

“Currently,” she says, “the herd consists of six average-sized bulls, lots of spike bulls and plenty of cows and calves.”

The ranch has received a few inches of snow, and personnel are taking visitors through the middle of the herd in horse-drawn wagons.

“As soon as we have a couple feet of snow,” Lee said, “we’ll switch and start pulling horse-drawn sleighs through the herd.”

Hours: To celebrate the New Year — and the return of elk to the ranch — sleigh rides on Jan. 2 will start at 10 a.m. After Jan. 2, the ranch’s visitor center will be open, and sleigh or wagon rides will be offered, during the following days and times:
