Action Directe, the Red Brigades, the Baader-Meinhof Gang (also known as the Red Army Faction), November 17, and the Japanese Red Army, these Communist/Marxist terrorist organizations were in the papers and on the evening news weekly, if not on daily basis during the seventies and eighties. Bombings, kidnappings, and assassinations were their modus operandi for decades.

The primary targets of such International miscreants were capitalist and pro-American businesses, assets, military and political figures. Always in need of funds, these arch-criminals were not above robbing banks and armored cars or engaging in outright extortion.

In case your memory has faded. Some of these “Communist Revolutionaries” sought to further their cause by tossing grenades into a packed movie theatre. They walked into Rome International Airport and opened fire on waiting passengers with submachine-guns. The people’s champions detonated a bomb in front of the USO club in Naples, Italy.

One of their star players, Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, AKA “Carlos the Jackal” was, among other things, credited with lobbing grenades into a Paris café, killing and maiming people as they ate. This is representative of the tactics used by those who fought for the oppressed workers of the world.

Common Thread

Although separated by nationality and distance, the anti-capitalist terrorist groups had a common thread, Marxist ideology and the backing of the Soviet Union and its puppet states. Through the KGB (the Committee for State Security), the Soviets provided funding, training and, when necessary, safe haven for terrorists all across the globe during the historical era we now call the Cold War years.

Premiers Khrushchev, Brezhnev, Andropov, and Gorbachev did not need to send divisions of troops into West Germany, Italy, France, Greece, Belgium, or Spain in their attempt to de-stabilize the capitalist West and the allies of the United States. The Soviet bosses had hundreds, if not thousands, of willing minions to do their dirty work and execute acts of extreme violence, all in the name of the “People’s Revolution.”

Terrorist support cells littered the European continent and training camps were found in the more unlikely locations of Cuba and Africa. The sad truth is that the West paid too little attention to what went on in the African continent and Marxism was allowed to flourish. Soviet supported dictators worked their way to the heads of several nations by armed revolt or the threat of the same.

So, where are the Communist Revolutionaries today, those idealistic soldiers of the worldwide People’s Army? They are gone. Yes, once in awhile we hear a peep from a one of the people’s soldiers who has not yet gotten the memo “Communism is dead.” Where are these communist freedom fighters? They are either dead, rotting in jail, or hiding. How did this come about?  Evolution? Fate? Bad luck?

The Defeat of the Red Terrorist

Without wishing to over-simplify the matter, Communist backed terrorism was defeated through a combined effort of three entities: Military Force, Intelligence Gathering, and Law Enforcement.  No, holding hands, burning incense, and singing “Kum Bi Ya” were not a part of the success plan.
